BEST TEACHER EVER. Barring none. He likes teaching, he understands what students understand, and what they don't. He can break anything down so everyone can understand. Goes out of his way to help. Makes you want to be a good student.
Had him as a GSI a few times when he should've been the one in charge. Freaking awesome. Really smart. Actually listens to your questions and thinks about them before answering. Very likeable, listening to him talk makes me laugh.
Absolutely the best teacher at UM. He loves to teach and that is reflected in class. Spends office hours in a group setting to help everyone out and will take as much time as is needed for you to understand concepts. Very friendly and personable.
unfortunately, not my GSI- but he is great in office hours- and if you have the opportunity to take a class with him- do whatever you can to get him, it will make your semester SO much easier.
I can't see how I would be able to learn Physics without him. He is so great as a teacher and as a person. Dave rocks!
he is just AWESOME!
I agree with everything everybody else said. I had him last semester and Physics 126 is just horrible without him.
Professor Winn clearly uses his knowledge of Physics to sculpt his body. But in all seriousness, he is a great teacher. If University of Michigan recruited more teachers of his caliber (instead of renovating ugly buildings), our schoold would be much better off.
Take Winn, he is a great prof for Physics!!
He's an incredible lecturer and makes himself incredibly available for the students.
This was such an amazing class with such an amazing teacher. He cares about every student and knows everyones names. he makes himself available to everyone and loves what he is doing. If only every teacher at UM was this good....
As a geneneral rule I hate physics classes, but when you have a great professor like this, you can't help but like the class. DAVE WINN IS AWESOME!!!!!!!
I hate physics with a passion, but Dave was awesome, and I love his accent. hahaha
really entertaining, great at getting material across, tests are pretty easy if u study, and he'll curve it if he makes it too hard
Dave is the man, he really knows the material and does a great job at explaining things at our level, great demos, willing to help everyone, he really cares, fair exams and fair grading, take this class with dave
What a great prof. Dave makes every class fun and worth going to. He usually ends of making fun of himself, intentionally or unintentionally. You have to know the concepts for his tests, but he always has extra office hours and reviews for every exam. I highly recommend taking 140 with Prof. Winn.
Extremely good at teaching, with some experienced know-hows. Probably the best physics prof in um
He was extremely dedicated to his work. Always in office hours, really willing to help. He made class really enjoyable. Excellent professor.
Very good teacher, very clear and thorough. Still a hard topic, and tests were hard.
very explanative and enthusiastic-very funny and personable
David is a great teacher. If you must take physics, take it with him. Easily on of the top teachers I have had.
Very helpful and clear. He really explains the material well and his discussion section complements the lecture well.
He is a good teacher lecturer, in my opinion MATH and Physics at this school are hard and terrible, sometimes you will be happy to learn something, then on the test there will be random math stuff that was never thought, if you like and are good at math then this class will be ok, if not another math hell, not as bad as calc 1
Gives excellent explanations and examples during lecture. Cares about the performance of his students although his exams are difficult.
Winn your way to an A!! He's great and his review session are extraordinary!!
141 Discussion, fantastic prof for discussion and lecture, very clear, and if not, he will re-explain things a different way to help you understand
dave winn is the best professor / GSI teacher i've ever had in my life. he is VERY passionate about physics, holds extended office hours, review sessions, extremely clear, very approachable and friendly unlike most professors, and responds to emails immediately. he often skips meals and loses sleep because he is so busy helping students. best!
winn is a nice guy and always willing to help his students out. he explains things very clearly
He's really easy to listen to and explains things clearly. His review sessions are extremely helpful-go to them! His exams are tough but he does everything he can to help you get a decent grade.
Dave Winn is a great lecturer. clear, explains things well, funny on accident. The class is designed badly however. 20 multiple questions for exams that are not curved does not allow students to properly demonstrate their knowledge of physics.
Dave Winn is the man. He is funny and the demos in class are cool. However, the exams are hard and the class is not curved. He is really helpful outside of class. He is also addicted to coffee
Dave Winn tries really hard, but his exams are impossible. If you can avoid taking physics from him, do so. It is a GPA killer and made overly difficult.
Dave Winn is the man. His test can be a little tricky, but if you go to lecture and discussion you should do fine. Take your time on tests and you'll end up with a pretty good grade.
Very good professor. His explanations are clear and he is available for help after lecture. I didn't think the exams were overly difficult, just make sure you prepare yourself well by doing book problems.
Very confusing. Goes off topic when I asked for help on a homework.
good teacher, exams could sometimes be very tough. sometimes not very clear in explaining things. if you want to learn a lot, take his class. if you want to save your GPA, don't take his class.
not helpful at all
Awesome professor, he's easy to understand and makes lectures awesome with his random jokes
Very confusing. Horrible.
Very good teacher. Makes a lot of jokes during class and has sweet demos. UofM must blow tons of money on the in-class demos of Physics 140.
He's a good and pretty entertaining guy. The thoughness of the class has little to do with his teaching ability. He honestly tries, but the class is poorly set up and this is out of his hands. Go to everything, read the book, and don't kill yourself when your grade sucks.
Physics is one of those subjects that a single concept can take hours to understand, but Dave will hand-hold you the whole way. He's always in the Physics help-room and he gives oodles of review sessions, so there shouldn't be any reason not to do well in his class. His exams can be a little tricky, but you get do get 1.5hrs for 20 questions
Very good professor, had him for 140 also.
If you're not interested/don't like physics, nothing will make it interesting for you. That doesn't mean that Dave Winn won't try. Daily demonstrations and a realistic outlook saved the otherwise dreadful experience of physics 140 for me. I was happy when I saw that I have him for 240 in the fall.
Dave is a funny guy who talks very oddly. Some people find the class-and exams- to be easy, and some find it to be difficult. The most difficult part is the web homework. Those can be stressfull at times.
Second time having him. Good teacher. knows his stuff. fairly interesting. good demos
Dave Winn and his physics experiments rock my world! Awesome professor who is knowledgeable and understanding.
Very friendly and approachable. Work ahead and ask questions early so that you hit the sense of enlightenment before actual exams. Materials are getting abstract and confusing towards the end of course, so you need to devote a good amount of time to succeed in class. David is an awesome prof, and his exams have a reasonable level of difficulty.
Dave is a cunning linguist, an outstanding lecturer, and he talks like he's from Canada! what's not to love.
He is a great lecturer, favorite vocab "The Basic Idea here is . . . ". Exams are hard, love the way he gives demos!
Tests are EXTREMELY HARD !!!
This is not an easy subject, so you need to go to class and do all the homework, get the easy points from lecture, discussion and HW. If Dave says it's going to be a straight scale grading, most likely the scale will be easier than the original one. Tests are tricky, but not hard.
it's an insanely difficult class! you definetly need some calculus experience. But he does a good job teaching.
He is a good lecturer and always has some demos prepared for class. Do the HW for the easy points because the exams are hard.
He's a great and funny professor but the class is hard. The homework is not easy, but I'm just not a physics guy. Winn is awesome though. His demos are amazing and usually funny.
Winn is entertaining but the class is hard. He has good demos but a lot of the homework problems are really difficult. He doesn't always post the homework assignment on time so it kind of sucks if you want to get it done early.
His lectures are fun and interesting and he does try very hard to get you to understand but it is just overall a tough class.
I can't say that he doesn't try to get you to understand - but the lectures barely connect with the homework and the exams are ridiculously hard.
The best physics lecturer on campus. David Winn is the most cunning of linguists you will ever meet. His voice is loud and his explanations and accents in the wrong places make him great. The class itself isn't too bad.
Dave Winn was an awesome professor! The content of the class was pretty boring, but he made it almost interesting. I loved how he always told jokes and how he pronounced words.
Interesting in lectures, horrible at writing back emails. I've emailed him with questions about three times throughout the semester with none of them answered.
Even though I dropped the class due to heavy load of homework, Professor Dave made me liked Physics. He's awesome.
He is a great teacher, His office hours are even better than the lectures, I seriously think if you don't go to lectures, and just go to the office hours, you can pass the exam with a high grade. He's extremely helpful and he loves physics, and his lectures are very entertaining.
Dave Winn is a great professor. He made me love physics. Mastering physics is a pain to do, but it really helped me understand the material. Also, the qwizdom this semester forced me go to class, which may have actually been a good thing. The book is also very helpful.
Dave Winn is just one of those professors you must take a class with before you graduate. He is incredibly passionate, he's a very hard worker, and he does not give up on you even if he goes over an hour in OH. He is just a great guy to learn from.
He's an awesome guy. One of those professors you'll remember when your children go to college. His antics and remarks make the lectures very funny and entertaining. He also tries his hardest to make sure you understand. His grading was crappy. Almost half of the class ended up getting screwed over in the end because of the way he decided to grade.
Midway through the semester, Dave Winn started teaching. He was MUCH BETTER than the previous professor. He is clear and explains things well, even though they are conceptually hard to picture. Real nice guy.
He explained material well and always had some cool experiment to keep you awake through the often boring material. To be honest though I probably learned more from my Discussion section.
He was very enthusiastic and it was obvious he enjoyed teaching the material. His lectures were quite exciting - he was a very fun and funny guy. His exams are difficult, but it is still possible to do well in the class. Definitely my favorite professor!
His review sessions as a discussion leader for 126 saved my grade. His explanations are logical and he is excellent at taking complicated ideas and making them understandable. He's also pretty funny. Two thumbs up.
I had Dave as a professor for 140 and a discussion leader for 240. He is extremely helpful and will go out of his way to see to it that you understand the material. He graduated from UM, so he knows the challenges of this school. His exams are hard, but he attempts to present the material as clear as possible. Definitely take his class!
He always wears shorts. Had him for 140 lec, and 240 discussion. A good teacher to have.
I had Dr. Winn for my 140 lecture and as well as discussion, and he's very nice and interesting guy. He's very helpful and tries so hard to make sure that you understand the material. I don't know where I would be without him in physics 140 :)
No doubt Dave is a good professor. However, I would not recommending taking physics with him because he writes very hard exams. usually the questions are worded clearly but for the first exam, a couple questions were definitely open to interpretation and the answer attained was different for each interpretation. Overall, I learned a lot from him.
He is a very good lecturer and made class fun by doing many demonstrations. The exams were hard, but you can still get a decent grade if you go to classes and do the homework.
Great teacher. Keeps things interesting. Funny to listen to him talk. Would recommend him to anyone taking physics.
Good teacher. Spent a lot of time on kinematics and stuff people already knew, blew through more difficult topics as the year progressed. Each test seems to have a couple "trick" qs, but otherwise tests are ok.
I took this class because I had to and I am not good at math or science all. But I ended doing just fine in this class. Dr. Winn is a great professor. I enjoyed going to his lectures because he does a lot of demonstrations. The exams are really hard but if you go to class, do the online homework, and participate in lectures you will make a decent g
Dave Winn is a really good teacher. He knows the material really well, and for the most part, the lectures are interesting. I would recommend taking physics with him.
The greatest physics professor of all time. OF ALL TIME.
Dave Winn is an awesome professor. He knows how to teach physics to people that are not good with math. I would definetly recommend him. He is also very willing to help students during office hours. He is AMAZING!
He gets the job done.
Phys 240 is hard. No doubt about that. Dr Winn is probably my favorite professor by far here at UM. He's extremely helpful during office hours and the review session was really good too. He also speaks in a very unique, entertaining way, not sure where he picked up the cool accent. Definitely take his class if you have the chance. HES JUST AMAZING.
If Dave Winn fits into your schedule, take it with him at all costs. The best physics professor at the University, and entertaining to suit.
He's very enthusiastic and clear about the material. Good about providing practice exams. Highly recommended!
Dr. Winn is good at explaining things, but doesn't cover much of the material. He expects you to gain most of your knowledge from the text book and then mainly goes over examples in class.
He is the best professor i have had at U of M. He is very clear and he keeps the material as entertaining as possible. It's a hard class but he does a great job teaching it.
Dave Winn is awesome. He makes the class interesting while keeping the class focused and on track. Does a great job explaining problems and is a very entertaining teacher. Would definitely recommend taking his class.
Very into his subject and definitely makes himself available for students outside of class. Clear lectures, super entertaining, you'll miss him when the semester ends. Highly recommended.
Best professor I've had at U of M. Holds like 15 hours of office hours every week (literally), and he's really clear, helpful and a great guy that wants everyone to do well!
Illustration is very clear and helpful!
David Winn is articulate, helpful, and committed to teaching the subject matter. Beware, the class was still difficult.
He's the bomb. I highly recommend him. The material is hard to grasp, but he gives you many opportunities to get a good grade (office hours and practice are highly recommended!)
All he does is Winn Winn Winn, no matter what. Working problems he can never get enough. A phenomenal professor all around, and far more entertaining than he ever intends to be.
Super solid. Great teacher, really cares, very easy to access outside of class time. Great personality. Works problems thoroughly and impresses on you the basic principles that will allow you to solve problems on your own.
I had Professor Winn when he decided to teach physics 135 in the spring. Although it was a challenging class, the way he teaches is interactive and never leaves you bored. His humor is so entertaining and it is clear that his number one priority is to help his students do their best on every exam. One of the best professors I've had here!
Terrific, interesting professo. Kept a potentially dull topic interesting. Very passionate in his teaching and interesting to listen to.
Overall solid lecturer. Difficult to imagine someone who offers a clearer view on electricity and magnetism.
He's amazing. I didn't understand integrals completely until we used them in this class. Enthusiastic and unintentionally (or intentionally unintentionally) funny. Very clear during lectures, but tends to write on board instead of putting stuff on slides, so try getting slides from another prof when studying. Three.. two.. one.. ZEERO
Easily the best professor I've had at the University. He's hilarious, yes. Think Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory minus all the bad. But most importantly, he's an AMAZING teacher. He's crystal clear on everything and knows what students have trouble with and how to teach it so that it makes perfect sense. Absolutely not to be missed.
Super clear explanations and makes a boring class fun. Gives hints to important details to help guide your studying.
Taking 240 with anyone else is a massive mistake.
What a great man. One of the kindest and best teachers I have ever had. His explanations are top notch, his willingness to help students is top notch, his review sessions are top notch. Best of the umich physics teachers.
Take Winn for 240, end of story. He is excellent.
I had little interest in physics before taking the class and left with interest. He was funny and VERY clear and helpful in his explanations. The class is hard but it is easier with him than other professors because he explains things well. Try to take him for 240
If you learn by paying attention and taking detailed notes in lecture, great professor. If you learn by somewhat dogging it in lecture and trying to learn at your own leisure with lecture slides, avoid at all costs. Writes no notes on his slides, and you will be screwed if you don't pay attention and take notes in lecture. Tests are fair.
Incredible E&M teacher. You will not be disappointed with his teaching at all. The class is hard, but you can get a good grade if you go to his office hours (in the help room). Take physics with him!
Great professor. Very clear explanations in class and is a pretty funny guy in general. Course can be tough, but if you work hard you can get a good grade. Has clicker questions every class but 10 lowest scores are dropped.
This guy's awesome! Take this class with him!
Winn is the best physics professor ever. He's really funny and you'll get used to his ways right away. He gives partial credit on MC questions and he's really helpful in office hours!
A funny guy and a pretty good professor. It's a hard class, but if you do as many practice exams as possible and go to office hours if you don't understand the answers, you will come out ok.
He makes everything so understandable. And he's funny too. Take him for any physics class if you can. I love his countdowns..."threeeee.....twoooooo......oneeeee....ZEEEEROOOO"
This class is tough, but he makes it manageable. He explains things so well and he's also really funny. You can find all the mastering physics answers on Google, but you won't learn anything and you will not do well on the exams if you do that. Exams may be tricky, but they are fair. Take him for any physics class.
You have to take him for any physics class. His lectures are so clear and you will not regret it. Exams are hard, but they are that way no matter who you have. You have to do the assigned readings before class, otherwise you will not do well on the iclicker questions. Mastering physics may be time consuming, but they are easy points.
I wasn't all that interested in physics at first but now I really like it. He explains things well and makes the class fun. Just put in the expected effort (which means doing the readings and not Googling your hw answers) and you should get a decent grade. A straight scale is used so you are not going to be clueless about your grade all semester
One of the smartest teachers at michigan, extremely clear and helpful, has mastery of material
Class is more of a supplement to the reading. He doesn't really teach in lecture and expects you to know the material already which can be difficult for such an abstract subject.
Yes he will not go over everything you need to know for the hw and exams, but that's the way college is. You are responsible for doing the reading. His job is to cover some of the more difficult concepts in lecture rather than introducing you to it for the first time. And he does a great job - his explanations are very clear.
He is the best physics professors you can get. His explanations are very clear, and he is very funny too. Exams are becoming more conceptual (rather than mostly calculations) than before. If you do the mastering physics honestly (meaning not just copying your answers from Google) and work out enough practice exam problems, you should be fine.
One of the best teachers I have ever had, period. Explains all material thoroughly and is patient with his students. He is quirky, nerdy, and funny, but he's also confident in his knowledge (and rightfully so).
Terrible terrible professor. Exams make absolutely no sense. Avoid him at all costs he is insane
He's a great professor and explains everything very well. People who complain are premeds who don't learn physics the right way. He writes hard exams, but you can get an alright grade if you put in all the expected effort. Those coaxial cable problems on the exams though...
Put in the expected effort and you shouldn't have any problem getting some form of A or B. The class really isn't as scary as you may have heard.
This guy is crazy but awesome. He knows what he is talking about and is great at explaining things.
This guy explains physics like no other professor. He is excellent! Exams can be a nightmare, but you will do fine if you put in the work.
This class is great! Winn explains everything clearly and is very helpful in office hours. You may have to do quite a bit of work, but it is totally worth it. It's not hard to get a decent grade if you know how to ask for help when you need it. Premeds, don't be shy to take this class! Take this instead of 235 if he's teaching!
This class was hard, but was also the best class I've taken here at UM. The class is not as scary as people make it sound. Exams have been harder than ever but Winn made things fair by lowering the grading scale.
Take any physics class with him and not with anybody else. He is basically the equivalent of Nolta (you'll know if you've ever taken orgo) but in the physics department. He is very patient with students and really knows how to dumb things down. Physics at Michigan is hard, but it he will make it manageable for you.
This class was my first physics class at UM since I got AP credit for 140. At first I was scared to take this class at first because I had little to no E&M background, but I finished strong. Winn is the best physics professor you can possibly get at UM. You will need to work hard, but you will have a great physics experience with him.
This class has a reputation of being notoriously difficult. It is hard but not as bad as everyone makes it sound. It is definitely meant to weed out engineers, but if you put in the work for this class, you should have to problem getting at least a B. Winn is great at explaining concepts and is very helpful in office hours. Exams are hard but fair.
Getting an A in this class is totally possible. Don't know why there are still rumors about it being impossible. Winn makes this class fun and interesting. He writes hard exams, but they are fair and all professors will write hard questions. Go to office hours, they help a lot.
Great lecturer, great class! I thought I would hate E&M at first but left the class really liking it. Winn does a great job of making this class very manageable. His explanations are very clear and getting an A is definitely possible. I'm surprised that the umich myth that this class is impossible still exists. Take him for any physics class.
Incredibly helpful and entertaining. If you know you are hopeless going into class like I was, just utilize every resource that is provided. Professor is a good dude though. Always there to help
Class is hard, but absolutely doable. 30% of your grade is just easy points that require effort. If you put in all of the expected effort, there is no excuse for you to fail. Winn is very helpful. Use office hours.
I'm premed and I absolutely enjoyed the class. I took 240 instead of 235 because I heard Winn was way better than the professor teaching 235. He was great and this was seriously the best decision ever. I initially thought I wasn't going to like E&M, but left really interested in it. Class was challenging but not as hard as everyone makes it sound.
I came in worried since I had basically no E&M background in high school. However, Winn was great and made my experience in this class a positive one. As long as you go to class, take notes, and WORK OUT the mastering physics you will survive. I decided to do electrical engineering because of this class!
Winn totally changed my mind about physics. Although I did not hate the subject to begin with, he made it my absolute favorite now. It can be hard to get E&M to click since unlike mechanics, things are more often non intuitive. However Winn does a great job of making things clear. Your UM experience is incomplete without taking a class with him.
Winn is an excellent physics professor! He is as great as Nolta from the chem department! He makes a class that seems scary very manageable. Seriously, take any intro physics class with him and nobody else!
Contrary to a very widespread myth, physics 240 at Michigan is not impossible. 70-80% of the class is engineers, so that may feel scary. Winn not only makes the class not as scary it sounds, but also fun! You won't just go because of iclickers, but because you will want to! Exams have become harder, but he will consider that when assigning grades.
This class is commonly known to be a major weeder for engineers. Most people take this class just to fulfill the COE core requirement rather than to be a physics major. A significant number of people even shy away from taking this class here. With Winn teaching, any rumors surrounding this class are usually not true. Getting an A is possible.
Winn is excellent because he's a lecturer, not a professor. His main focus is teaching. Take intro physics with him whenever he's an option. He LOVES to write extremely difficult exam questions, though this is not to say other instructors aren't capable of doing so. If you have him and nobody else, you should do fine. You will learn a lot from him.
People exaggerate the difficulty of this class way too much. Sure this class isn't exactly easy, but it is well worth going through the harder version of physics 2 just to get Winn. He is such an excellent lecturer. Can't think of a better person to teach this class. 3...2...1...0! That's what you will remember from his class.
This class is pretty hard, but can't really think of a better person to teach it. Exams are pretty tricky, and even some of the smartest people will find about two or three problems that they don't know how to do. Getting a B is very doable, but you have to work very hard to get an A.
This class is one of the most difficult intro classes at Michigan, but is manageable if you put in the effort that is expected. Go to every class as his explanations are very helpful and you may even be walked through some MP problems. Exams are hard but fair. It is not hard to get a passing grade, but a B or A will take a good amount of hard work.
Favorite professor
Take physics with him, and nobody else! Even if this means taking the slightly harder intro physics sequence. As a pre-med, I definitely thought it was well worth it to take 240 instead of 235 just to get him as a professor. It's really not that difficult of a class. You have to do some work, but you will actually learn your physics.
THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!! Take this class here with him! It's worth it!
I came in worried since rumors say that this class is outrageously difficult (even some engineering advisors tell people that), but Winn tries really hard to make it convincing that the myth isn't true. If you take this class with Winn, you will not be sorry. He is great. People just over exaggerate the difficulty of this class too much.
This class is known to be very difficult, but you will seriously not get anybody better than Winn to teach an intro physics class. Everything is clear. 30% of your grade is stuff you can almost easily get 100% on. There will always be a problem or two on exams to see who gets it, but most are ones that most people can answer. Also 3, 2, 1, 0!
Professors that can teach this well don't come along very often. Dave has a knack for explaining things in ways students can easily understand. The exams were extremely fair and actually quite thought provoking. My only complaint was that the grading was kind of weird and made the class too easy - not really a complaint I guess. Awesome.
If you take physics 240 at Michigan, you NEED to take it with Dave! He is an excellent lecturer and extremely helpful. The class is challenging, don't make it more difficult by taking it with another professor.
Physics 240 should be taken with Winn and not anybody else. You won't magically get an A just because you take the class with him, but since he typically writes the harder exam questions, you will be more prepared if you take his section. Plus you will be in a better position if you choose to do a physics-intensive major (ex. engineering).
This class is as difficult as advertised, but Dr. Winn is the best person to take it with. He's a bit of a tease with the demonstrations (he has a tendency to leave them sitting in the lecture hall for days before using them) but he's a great teacher.
This class requires hard work, but is not as terrible as rumors say. If you put in all the expected effort it is possible to get a good grade in this class. Dave is one of the best lecturers you can take this class with. His exams may be tricky, but are fair. If a question turns out to be trickier than intended, he would throw it out.
I also took 240 with Dave and decided to wait to take 405 once I heard he was teaching it. One of the best professors I've ever had. An incredibly dedicated educator and researcher in pedagogy, Prof. Winn seems to live for his students (and hockey), and is just a cool guy outright. I really can't recommend him more highly.
Winn is seriously the best person to take any physics class with. He is crystal clear in his explanations. Spring term went by very quickly, but weekly quizzes helped use keep up and not have to worry about only a few exams making up the grade. Quiz questions were hard but fair. In the end, he basically bumped everybody's grade up a step
Winn is the man, take 240 with this guy and E&M will make so much more sense.
You have to self teach everything using a website that is not helpful. Videos go through easy examples then the homework is super hard and you have no idea what to do, so you expect to learn in class, but no, I don't even know what i learned in class, nothing.
Physics 240 is a hard class, but Winn makes it pretty much impossible to fail. The quizzes are hard, but 35% of your grade comes from effort points, stuff that you can easily get almost 100% on. People complain about the preflight stuff, but at this point in your education you are supposed to be partly responsible for learning on your own.
Physics 240 is hard but not impossible class. Winn is a great lecturer and provides great resources to help you succeed. Plus a good portion of your grade is merely effort based. The way to do well is by focusing on learning the material rather than the rumors that surround this class. Seek help early and often
I absolutely LOVE David Winn. If you can, do everything in your power to take him. He's funny, engaging, and even at eight in the morning, I paid attention. This class was really really difficult, but if you go to him (maybe even before your GSI), he will give you the help you need. He's is just so great.
I went into this class very worried, having heard past rumors. They changed the policy so that people who need to take this class cannot do so elsewhere as easily. This class is not that terrible, and there are many resources to help you succeed. The quizzes instead of midterms thing has its ups and downs. Visit the help room early and often.
Dave Winn. Where to start? The lectures can be hilarious (especially when he breaks demo equipment). I have found myself in tears from laughing, which is not commonplace for a physics class. He is also amazing at explaining difficult topics, which are not scarce in this class. Honestly the best professor I've had here. 240 is, in fact, passable.
240 is a hard class as the material is not as intuitive, but Winn is great. Lectures are very clear, and he is helpful in office hours. With a straight grading scale, it will be clear to you how well you are doing throughout the semester, unlike "curved" classes where you have to guess the outcome based on the exam statistics and it's hit or miss.
Most people only take this class because they have to, but Winn actually makes it enjoyable. I didn't enjoy physics too much going in, but I would never dread going to class because lectures were awesome. It is a good amount of work, but the effort is well worth it. In the end, I really enjoyed the class. VISIT THE HELP ROOM OFTEN!
This course is probably one of the hardest ones taught here. I was dreading it going in, but I ended up enjoying it more than 140 and ended up doing better. He is an excellent teacher and has clear explanations. The class was recently redone so that there is a lot more online homework, which helped a lot.
Dr. Winn is an awesome teacher. Really explains all the material well beyond the smartphysics pre-lectures, and always can help you make sense of a problem if you go to his office hours. The class was tough, but it was very well taught. If you skip lecture, you will not pass the exams.
This class is known as the weeder for engineers. You need to work for your grade, but an A is totally doable. Winn explains concepts very well in class, but you do need to work hard outside of class to achieve the level of understanding needed for the quizzes. Quiz averages were around 60% most of the time, but the grading scale is quite generous
If you have to take physics 240, take it with Winn and you will not regret it. Most people take it only because they are required to, but Winn made it worth it for me. The straight scale means you don't need to guess where you stand in terms of grades, which helps a lot. If you work hard you will have no problem getting an A or B range grade.
If you're an engineers who can't get around taking this class, make sure you take it with Winn. He makes the class bearable and is very helpful outside of class. I liked the subject in the end, although I unfortunately don't have room in my schedule to take further physics courses. You won't fail as long as you don't aim for just the minimum.
Not helpful
Most people take this class only because they have to, but Winn literally does everything he can to make the class interesting. If you won't use this material in your engineering specialty, I'm sorry that you have to take this class. It is actually not as big of a nightmare as people make it out to be, but you still need to work hard for the grade
Dave Winn is the man. Great professor who explains these topics very well. I recommend watching videos online on the subjects before each quiz from other universities if you aren't understanding the material because Winn has to keep moving at a certain pace. Do the work and you will get an A no problem.
I enjoyed Physics 240, they just switched the semester to more quizzes, less tests, online interactive video thing, and a faster pace. Winn knows his stuff and communicates it fairly well. Sometimes he can be vague. Recommended to attend lecture
Professor Winn was awesome for Physics 240. I was intimidated by the idea of 240, but he explains all of the material very clearly and won't stop until the class understands. iClickers are used daily and attendance is mandatory. Highly recommend Winn for 240. Also, I recommend using the University Physics textbook to supplement SmartPhysics.
Took 240 a year after 140, personally i found 140 to be a lot tougher than 240, i received a B- in 140 after putting in a decent amount of work. In 240 however i pulled an A- even when completely failing two of the 6 quizes (exams). The lowest quiz is dropped and if you pull an average of 75's you will get an A, Definitely hard material however.
Dave's a pretty good teacher. He made the physics pretty clear and sometimes it was a little interesting. Definitely actually do the prelecture videos before lecture like they recommend. It makes lecture so much easier.
If you must take physics 240, you must take it with Winn. It's become more manageable recently since they replaced midterms with quizzes. Plus you get to drop one so if you bomb one you can still recover. Winn is great at explaining concepts, but still be prepared to put in good effort into the class if you want a good grade. Use the help room.
Winn is very helpful both in lecture and office hours. You must have a willingness to learn and not just a grade obsession in order to succeed in the course. Lecture is mandatory because of iClickers. Workload is very fair, and the help room is very useful for getting homework done. Quizzes are tough, but if you practiced enough you should be fine.
This guy is a total nerd and it's awesome. Go to office hours. Quizzes are based entirely off the lecture. Make sure you know how to do all the iClicker and you'll be fine. Once you know how to study, the class is a breeze but it's challenging material so don't blow it off. He normally teaches 240 and steals iClicker directly from 240 slides.
240 is really about understanding the lectures. Strangely, the quizzes often have nothing to do with the online homework assignments - which have infinite attempts, so don't stress. I found that if I reviewed lecture slides, and understood every iClicker question/answer, I did well on quizzes. Winn is great about helping during his office hours!
Awesome professor for an awesome class. I didn't personally go to office hours but in lecture Winn is very helpful, a great teacher, and wants to make sure you know the material well. There are prelectures and online homework that are essential to passing both from the standpoint of grades and understanding. Quizzes were tough but within reason.
Physics 240 has gotten easier than in recent semesters. The quizzes can be tough, but the grading scale is quite forgiving. 35% of the grade is (mostly) easy points. It may seem like they still want the average to be a B/B-, but honestly enough people don't care about the class that if you work hard, you can be near the top of the curve.
Winn and Gerdes are both great professors. Winn does a great job explaining things and you don't need a textbook if you have Winn and Smartphysics. Don't be afraid to ask questions in lecture or at his office hours.
I doubt I'm going to encounter a better professor during my time at the University of Michigan
I really liked Winn throughout the semester. He's a good teacher and understands your questions, especially in office hours. It's a tough class but if you try, you can definitely get a good grade.
Amazing Professor. He's extremely helpful in office hours and on piazza. People say his tests are hard but if you pay attention in class(which is not to hard to do here) the tests are not that bad at all. Can't go wrong having him.
I took Phys 240 my first semester at UM and it was certainly my favorite class that semester because of Dave Winn. Winn was hilarious and engaging in class, and was helpful in understanding the material. He also was incredibly accessible via email and Piazza, as well as during office hours.
Professor Winn is without a doubt the best professor for Physics 240. He is so passionate about what he is teaching that it makes it easy to pay attention. His explanations are clear and thorough. He gives plenty of difficult examples in class that make it easier to understand exam problems. Bonus, his humor is classic.
I doubt there is an instructor at Michigan who cares more about his/her students than Dr. Winn. He puts a great deal of time into lectures and his effort shows. Winn really wants students to learn the material and gives students willing to work many opportunities to do so. If you have the opportunity to take 405 with Winn, do it!
Professor Winn is one of my favorite professors at the university! His lectures are super helpful. Many people complain that 240 is super hard but the key to the class is completing the preflights and checkpoints before lecture. The difficult topics are covered in class with the expectation that students completed the pre-class assignments.
Dr. Winn is the man. I dreaded 240 the summer before school started, but I'll tell you it is the class I look forward to every day. Winn is an amazing lecturer. I rarely leave his class confused. His humour is very clever and always has the class laughing. I will definitely miss having his class.
Professor Winn is probably my favorite professor so far at U of M. He has a very solid grasp of the material, explains things incredibly clearly and completely, and is entertaining in a kind of dorky and adorable way. He clearly has a love for what he teaches and that passion certainly rubbed off on me. He makes me truly love the material.
Winn is a fantastic lecturer. He's excited about the material, and he's excited to teach it. He also keeps it engaging with demos and a great witty sense of humor.
Overall he's a really solid professor. He's funny and makes jokes in class but also covers the material thoroughly and at a good pace. He has very strict grading criteria which he clearly lays out at the beginning of the term but he also has no leeway for bumping up grades
Prof Winn's jokes and quirky personality made 9am lecture worth it. The material is tough, but you'll do well if you start your hw early and go to office hours (camp out in the Physics Help Room). He recommends doing Problem Roulette to study, but I redid the hw & lecture slides. DO THE PRELECTURES! easy points + makes life SO much easier trust me
I wasn't a fan of Professor Winn. Even though he's funny during lecture, his teaching is always heavy on the theoretical material and he never covers any problems with math (which is what most of the homework/exams is based on). Only good part of this class is that the extra credit can significantly raise your grade (brought me from B+ to A).
He is by far the most amazing professor I ever have at UofM. He is very caring about his students and want us to get As in the class. He is very helpful during the i-clickers and try to help us as much as possible. He is funny, generous, and has a cute sense of fashion. Physics 240 is supposed to be a hard class but he makes it worth it.
Great lecturer. The grading in his class is based on only 6 quizzes, with the lowest quiz grade dropped. There is extra credit for showing up to class and answering iClicker questions as well as doing the homework.
This guy could be the most awkward professor I've had to date, but he's an incredible lecturer. Probably one of the few collegiate lectures actually worth going to without additional incentives.
Winn is an amazing lecturer, and the perfect mix between funny and awkward. Quizzes can be hard, but the lowest grade is dropped and there is lots of extra credit available. If you do enough Problem Roulette and don't cheat with iClickers, you can get an A.
Professor Winn is, without question, the worst professor I've ever had at the University of Michigan. He's scattered and can not clearly present relevant material. The textbook is the only thing that stopped me from failing. Take 405 with literally anyone else. I'm pretty sure I understand less having finished the course than I did after 260.
Solid choice. Very clear instructor. His jokes are the amazing part of this class (but people seem to not get those all the time)
A very good lecturer who teaches the topics well and focuses on the conceptual background. Also he has a lot of great demonstrations, which help give the content a real world connection, something more inherently difficult in 240.
Professor Winn was an excellent professor, covering a lot of material quickly and clearly. That said, I wish I had taken multivariable calculus before taking this class rather than at the same time. This course requires a lot of work and the quizzes don't necessarily reflect the homework assignments, so the practice quizzes and roulette are key.
Makes class enjoyable and explains very well. Incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the topics
Winn is honestly a good professor, I just personally struggle with Physics and he intentionally makes the quizzes very hard. If I was a Physics or Engineering major, I would probably love him, but as someone who is just trying to pass the class, it's pretty tough.
Dave Winn is probably a good professor, but Physics 240 is impossible at Umich. The lectures have little to nothing to do with quizzes, and homework problems are never tested on. Most of the content is learned on your own. Dave is a friendly, funny guy though.
Dr. Winn is the best professor I've ever had at Michigan. He makes the toughest engineering prerequisite a course that you actually want to take and show up for lecture. He's very understanding and accessible outside of class; however, the class itself is very, very tough. Be ready to study a lot.
I thought he was a decent professor, but I wouldn't say amazing or anything. This might be because persoanlly I wasn't really a fan of the subject matter he taught to begin with, but his explanations often confused me more, and the quizzes were unnecessarily stressful.
Dave Winn is by far my favorite professor at the University of Michigan. He's lectures are both very intense and extremely hilarious!
The class is laid out kind of weird because they know engineers need to pass it. Saying that, you only need to get like an average of 44% on quizzes and do half the homework to pass. Doing better than just passing is very hard. Also very hard quizzes every other week make it very stressful. Lectures are awesome though, love dave winn
Amazing professor with great humor. His explanations were clear. Go to every lecture, as he will have a lot of great examples, demos, and clicker questions. Notetaking is key for this class as posted slides are less helpful than what he writes on the board. Best way to ace this class is to take LOTS of practice quizzes and then study your notes.
Dave Winn is the poster child for clear explanation in the physics department. He's straightforward and funny and really wants his students to understand the material; very helpful in office hours. Dave is a G.
Dave is really one of the best profs in UM. He is very experienced and know clearly students' difficulties. Go to office hours! His office hour is super helpful for quizzes or homework. The quizzes will be difficult, but the practice exams are useful. I will definitely take him again. Super respected physics prof, REALLY!
amazing lectures, class consists of 7 quizzes and 1 final. There is homework and other stuff that counts for extra credit. Go to class. He is an amazing lecturer and a gem of a person. One of my favorite classes at the university (and one of the hardest classes I have taken)
This course has some tough material, but I couldn't imagine a better professor for it. Winn is great at explaining the tough stuff and really cares about his students.
Although the class itself is relentlessly difficult and every quiz is high-stakes, Winn is a great professor. He explains difficult concepts in simple ways and allows you to learn with in class questions and discussion.
Great lecturer, if even if physics bores you, he will make attending worthwhile and still informative.
Winn is a fantastic professor. He is very clear and concise in his lectures and he is extremely helpful at office hours. Definitely try attending lectures, the clicker questions are super helpful. Quizzes are definitely tough but not impossible and getting a good grade should not be a problem if you do all the extra credit and study for quizzes.
Dave Winn is an absolute TREASURE to this University. By far one of my favorite professors I've ever had, with a real passion and knowledge for his craft. Funny with an amazing personality, I never dreaded having to wake up to attend his lectures. The class can be very difficult though, especially if you're going in with weak physics background.
Very knowledgeable in Physics. Hilarious and entertaining lectures with tons of demos. Dave is a G.
Would highly recommend Winn. He is a great guy and really, REALLY cares about his students. Excellent sequence between him and Popov.
Winn is a great teacher. His use of Flipit Physics and iClickers enhanced the course. His class is extremely difficult; I studied his practice quizzes day and night to do okay on his quizzes. Quizzes are your whole grade and only 10 questions long so they were unnecessarily hard. Nevertheless, this class was well structured and I enjoyed it.
This guy is the GOAT. That's it. Hard/annoying class, but you already knew that if you signed up for physics. Attendance is basically mandatory, since you have to do clicker questions every day. Tests are hard.
Dave Winn made physics enjoyable. Office Hours saved my grade and he truly cares about helping you learn. Ask questions and this tough class will become manageable.
Professor Winn is such a great professor during lectures and out of class. He takes time to make sure that you understand, if you make it a point to attend his office hours. The course is really hard though. Exams are very tricky and you'll need to keep up with homework and clicker questions to get enough extra credit points to offset the exams.
Very good physics teacher. If you want to ace his class, many of the problems on quizzes are extremely similar/the same as exam questions from previous years. Class also has generous amounts of extra credit built into the grading system.
Dave "3 2 1 close" Winn is the man you want for this course. This is without a doubt the best physics instruction I have received. Winn is also super helpful during office hours, and he answers EVERY SINGLE question on Piazza in great details. The materials are hard but Winn wants you to succeed, put in the work and you will get a decent grade.
I can't recommend anyone else for 240 after taking it with Winn. This is hands down the best physics instruction I have ever received. Winn is super helpful during office hours, and he answers all question on Piazza quickly and in great details. The materials are hard but Winn preps you for success, put in the work and you will be fine.
Physics had always been one of my least favorite subjects. Not sure how he did but Prof. Winn was able to not only help me do extremely well in this class, but also make me not hate physics. Take this man for 240 he's the GOAT.
Professor Winn is a nice guy and a pretty good lecturer, but the class is bad. Grades are based on quizzes (once every 2 weeks) and a final. The content covered during lectures doesn't match quizzes. The only way to study for quizzes is to memorize and write down formulas from previous quizzes on your notecard. Quizzes are unnecessarily difficult.
Professor Winn helps make a difficult class easy to digest. His interactive lecture style with clicker questions guides students through difficult quiz-like questions, and you can clearly tell he has a deep passion for physics and truly cares about helping students on Piazza/OH. I would HIGHLY recommend grinding out past quizzes to succeed.
One of my favorite professors of all time at Umich. He was great at explaining things clearly and wanted everyone to actually understand. His lectures always went by really quickly and he never went over time. I'd take Winn for every physics class if I could.
The class is graded on 6 quizzes and a Final, Homeworks and classworks are extra credit. But if you study well and do the homeworks as practice (They help a lot), you should be able to get a pretty good grade in the class.
Lots of lecturing but did a good job explaining things.
David Winn is the most OVERRATED physics professor at UofM. 6 quizzes Bi-weekly is RIDICULOUS!!!! He sets up way to many traps in his quizzes which are hard to catch, because you only get 45 minutes to take it. If you someone that wants does not want to study EVERY OTHER WEEKEND DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
Good guy. Cares for his students and will get back to you in piazza within minutes.
The best lecture class I've taken and the best lecturer by far. He explains things very well and provides a ton of in-class examples to get you familiar with the problems. FlipIt isn't great, but there were times it was helpful; it was nice that missing a few hw assignments would barely change my grade. He is funny, nice, and respectful. 9/10
Dr. Winn's a great lecturer in a class that covers difficult content. The material can be difficult and quizzes can be hard but Dr. Winn is one of the greatest professors I've had, and does well to explain things. Also good at getting back to questions on Piazza.
Professor Winn was my studio instructor for Physics250. The studio problems were quite challenging, but that portion of the class was graded leniently, so there was room for error. While I do wish some of the more important concepts were covered for the first time in lecture rather than in studio, it was still possible to grasp the material.
Grade is determined almost purely based on quizzes. He has very good lectures and a good understanding of what he is teaching.
The quizzes are very hard but the extra credit system is very generous. I find Prof. Winn's use of clicker questions to be very helpful, often showing us the most common mistakes students make and the best ways to think about problems. Also, you get a notecard on each exam which is cool
Good instructor, but this class is absurd. Your grade being determined by six quizzes and basically nothing else is... again, absurd. And they're EXAMS, not quizzes - don't care what the syllabus says. They're extremely difficult, they're not no damn 'quizzes'. So while he's a good instructor, the way he sets up this class is laughable. Do better.
Funny guy and good lecturer. 6 exams throughout semester, which is a lot, but he provides 6 practice exams for each one (36 total), which makes them relatively straight-forward to prepare for. He is very responsive and extremely helpful on Piazza. Would take him again!
Fantastic lecturer. Always gives clear, intuitive, and often exciting explanations for topics poorly discussed in the FlipIt. The multiple choice quizzes are difficult without partial credit, but after doing all the practice quizzes and making a good notecard, 9/10 to 10/10 on each quiz is definitely doable. Great and thorough responses on Piazza.
Do the homework, even though it's not "mandatory" just do it. I wish I did.
I will have to say that the way Physics 240 is graded is tough. I think David Winn does an amazing job of teaching the concepts. He has office hours often and performs very cool experiments in class. For quizzes he also has several old ones from past years and their solutions for you to study.
Professor Winn's lectures make use of demos; questions; examples; and several boards of notes, which serve to develop a toolbox for E&M questions. This toolbox is tested on extremely difficult quizzes throughout the semester, which are designed to thoroughly test a students understanding in a way that encourages true understanding.
Prof Winn was a fantastic professor. He is an amazing lecturer and has a hilarious dry sense of humor. We would learn the concepts in class but not necessarily how to solve problems, so be prepared to self-study problem-solving a little. Gives tons of practice tests online, so very studyable. Overall great Phys240 class.
Professor Winn includes several quiz-style problems in his lectures to practice the material and prepare for test-taking. He highlights all the relevant points numerous times and drills them in so students don't forget. Completing homework and prelecture is not mandatory but is merely 'extra credit' so you can maximize your grade if you do these.
Winn was great. Taught a tough class well and was super available outside of class.
Beast of physics. Biggest challenge are those quizzes that come every 2 weeks. Benefit is there's a drop for one quiz, but overall your grade will be determined by your performance on the quizzes and final. Prof laid out all expectations beginning of semester so you know what you're in for. Very supportive and helps a lot online whenever needed.
Dave is one of my favorite professors at Michigan. He is great at explaining the material, and the effort he puts into teaching is very apparent. This class was very efficient in the way Dave taught lectures, and how our out-of-class assignments were structured. The prelectures and homeworks always left me with a better understanding of concepts.
THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD AT U-M. He is extremely clear on everything right from the start, whether about grading criteria, or lecture, and how to succeed. He is extremely assessable outside of class and basically responds to Piazza questions from 7:30am-10:30pm, and normally you can expect a response in 30 minutes. He is AMAZING.
Professor Winn is a great lecturer who makes the course material engaging. The frequent quizzes can be tough, but the practice exams he provides are incredibly helpful. Using unstuckstudy ai along with the textbook and study sessions made this class manageable.
The class was pretty easy especially because of his grading scale and he does a pretty decent job explaining the material. The only thing is he is a raging liberal and talks about politics kind of a lot which was a little annoying
Do practice quiz problems, put as many as you can on notecard 70% of quiz problems are reused.
If you want to make the quizzes hard, fine. At least take the time to make sure the solutions to the mock quizzes are correct so I as a student don't have to do backflips to learn the right material.
I went consistently to lectures and he explained things pretty well, but sometimes rushed through lectures, which made it difficult to follow. He's a great explainer, but you need to dedicate a LOT of time to this class to understand what's going on (which I didn't do). His quizzes are similar to his old exams so make sure to review it a lot.
Loved Dave Winn. The class is hard, but he's funny and cares a lot about the content he teaches. Good guy.
Prof. Winn is genuinely one of the best professors I have had at the University. I am not (at all) keen on asking for help, and when I finally caved and decided to do so at the end of the semester, he was super helpful and understanding. He definitely holds students to a high standard, primarily because he knows students can grasp the material.
David Winn is one of the most knowledgeable and prepared professors I have ever had. His lectures are very easy to comprehend and incredibly helpful for understanding the material. Probably one of the best professors I've had.
