David really knows his stuff. He makes the class really interesting. Gives opportunities for extra credit.
David is a GREAT instrucotr, he's very smart, funny and nice. The cooking part was a lot of fun, we used ingredients I'd never heard of, but he was always there to help. You have to go to class, there's a food lab each time, as well as lecture. There's no book and no tests. At the end of class your group cooks a recipe and it's filmed.
I took the Nutrition and cooking class with him. He was very kind and respectful, helpful, and very knowledgeable. The class was very useful.
I had Dr. Aguilar-Alvarez for my Online Nutrition 1020 class. The class itself was very clear, but a lot of work. Tests were somewhat tough, but there are a lot of opportunities for extra credit. I have never met him, but any time I had problems, he was more than willing to help! Seems like a nice guy. Heard his lectures are great.
Mr. Alavarez is by far one of my favorite professors. This class wasn't an easy A and you'll definitely have to put in the hours, but it's worth it. Read your text book, study the assignments and practice exams, go to class and you'll do great. Mr. Alvarez is always willing to help and reponds quickly to e-mails. Over all a great class!
I loved this class. Don't let the "toughness" scale scare you, but you definitely have to put in the effort to pass. His lectures are very clear and easy to understand. He cares about your success and wants to help you to succeed. The SI sessions really helped me to improve my test scores.
Lots of work to be done but very easy to get a good grade if you keep up on the work. Easy to get in contact with him outside of class if you ever need help or anything too. A very good choice if you're looking to fill a life science credit.
David is a knowledgeable professor who seemed vested in my success as a student. My undergraduate research required weekly personal meetings, a literature review, working with data, etc. While it felt like David was barely getting his feet wet as a research professor, he was personable, patient, and was great to talk to about nutrition and life.
I would recommend taking the class on campus. The online course is very difficult. Sometimes I felt lost, not sure exactly what was expected or what I should study. Study hard and read a lot! He does offer extra credit and you will need it.
Dr. Aguilar-Alvarez was a good online professor. He would email at the start of each unit to make sure the class knows what is expected for the unit. There are 2 assignments for each unit with 3 extra credit assignments. As long as you read the material and do the assignments, the exams are not that difficult.
He is a great professor but the course is absolutely awful! The grading criteria is not clear and it was often difficult to understand what we had to do to complete tests and assignments. I would not suggest this class to anyone who wants a simple life science credit.
He really was a great teacher for this course. He would go into details about the information and really make it interesting. I never read the book, but you did need it to do the assignments on MindTap. He helps you prepare for the exams and you know what to expect for sure. Pay attention in class and use the practice tests/extra credit to study!
Dr Aguilar-Alvarez is a great professor! he managed to explain tough concepts with amazing clarity. You have to work for your grade but you will also learn a lot if you keep up. He is invested in your performance and success in the class, is easy to talk to outside the classroom/via email and the extra credit helps a lot!
David is a great professor! This class is not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. Just go to class, take notes, and study and you'll do just fine. Plus, he offers a lot of extra credit which helps. He does have an accent but I understood him just fine. If you need to take Nutrition take it from David!
This class was difficult because it was a second block summer semester course. Everything was jam packed into 7 weeks. A huge 8 page research paper was due within 2 weeks of the class starting. 5 exams with 50+ questions, discussions and dumb cross word puzzles every week. There was a lot of busy work but the professor is nice and works with you!
If you are going to take nutrition 1020 then David is a great professor to take it from! He seems to really care about his students, and shows it by staying after class for a little bit so that students can ask him questions. Overall, this class wasn't as difficult as people make it out to be as long as you do the reading and go to SI.
Very kind funny man. His lectures are exactly what you need for the exams. There is a lot of homework but it all applies to the class and is manageable. If you miss class, you are very easily able to catch up. The textbook is online and that is where all of the assignments and homework is located. Not to mention he is incredibly good to look at.
This class is super hard. I took it online and worked at my own pace. As long as you do well on the assignments and DO THE EXTRA CREDITS, you will be okay. Take your time with the take home exams. It's a ton of reading and super overwhelming. Get tutors. I would recommend taking another course if you can. The professor is super kind though.
The senior seminar class entailed writing a small paper analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of a scientific paper, debates, a presentation assignment, finding nutrition-related jobs, and doing a mock interview. David was somewhat unclear on what he was expecting, but graded fairly. A busy class for just 1 credit, but it's doable!
Professor Aguilar-Alvarez was one of my favorite professors I have ever had. He made Nutrition interesting and fun. Would take any class from him if I had the chance.
Exams are hard. Assignment, quizzes, exams are all over the place. So many due dates. I wish all quizzes and exams were in one place. Too many many areas to submit quizzes, exams, and assignments makes it difficult to be organized and track work .
David did a good job at preparing you for exams and homework. He's very easy to get ahold of outside of the classroom and always willing to help you in any way. Lectures were easy to listen through and always interesting. Although attendance is not mandatory and everything is posted online, I found it beneficial to attend class.
This guy is great! He explains the material slowly and thoroughly. Only because of him, I was able to pass the Nutrition 1020. I highly recommend him.
I thought he was a great professor. He was always willing to help if you needed it and he did a good job of preparing us for exams. I would really recommend taking him for Nutrition 1020!
Great professor, but didn't like the class. 4860 is a gardening internship and it's a ton of hours (60 hours per credit). Dr. Aguilar-Alvarez was really laid back, accessible, and clear about expectations, which was great. You made your own schedule for the greenhouse, the biggest issue was there just wasn't enough to do, and I wasted a lot of time
He was great! Very knowledgable about his subject and very passionate about nutrition. A few weeks into taking this course I switched my major to nutrition because it was that good. This class is NOT hard if you do the extra credit before the exams-- all of the extra credit practice exams are almost identical to the real tests. Will take him again
Cares about each student and their progress and wants to help you succeed in his class. Actually cares about the material and wants each student to gain a respect for what they're learning. Great professor!
I have loved every class from David! He's a great teacher, really thorough with his feedback, and works hard to grade fairly. Several times I had an issue uploading a part of an assignment, and when I emailed to explain this to him, he was fine with it and gave me full points. I've always had a great time in all his classes.
David is a nice man but overall as a professor I did not care for him. It doesn't help how the class is laid out as it feels like an advanced nutrition class, not an intro level one. There is extra-credit and he tries to help you out as best as he can but I didn't care for the class. Get ready to work, this isn't an easy class overall so be ready.
David was an excellent instructor. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about the information. He is able to explain things in such way that it could be easily understood. The load is heavy but easy to follow.
Very knowledgeable on the subject and always had time to answer questions during and after class. He connected personally with students, Make sure he knew everyone on the class . Great all around I learned very much about nutrition. I would recommend the class to anyone.
David is an Awesome professor. The course was fantastic, I learned a lot about cooking and the health benefits of certain ingredients.
This was a great class and learning environment. I learned a lot about other cultures. The professor did a very nice job at explaining things with the exception of some assignments. He is very kind and respectful to students.
I was taking his online class, so I cant speak for the in-person experience; however, I had an extremely difficult time learning the material. He didnt offer much help at all. And the assignments were a bit challenging.
Took this class to fill gen ed requirement. Not a big fan of science stuff, so the class wasn't super easy for me. Definitely wasn't the hardest class I took. If you actually put a bit of effort forth and try, you will pass the class. Not easy, but not so hard you'll have to retake it!
This class was just so boring. So boring. Most of the assignments were taken straight from the textbook, and there was very little variety in the assignments. All in all, wasn't terrible, but wouldn't really want to retake.
Assignments and course material were extremely helpful and will continue to be beneficial after completion at Weber. This class really helped prepare me for the next steps after
Professor was well prepared and great about sending out reminders and what we needed to be working on each module. He did a good job using the class time we had and offered fun study activities
David is a wonderful teacher. He really cares that his students understand his material. This class is the most failed class at WSU and he has taken the time to go above and beyond to make sure all of his students are grasping the concepts. There's a reason that he was voted as one of the best professors of the year.
This class was hard. There is a lot of reading and the practice exams don't really prepare you for the actual test. -- A lot of trick questions. You don't really interact with the professor as the homework is graded automatically. Beware the module assessment are very heavy on your grade so you'll want to make sure to read up.
This class has taught me a lot about nutrition. It was very interesting. It felt challenging but not so challenging that I felt I was falling behind the whole time. The instructor was always open to any questions that the class had and he had a very clear schedule of what was expected of us
David is a very knowledgeable professor about nutrition. And does very well with answering questions students have about certain things. Mixing in activities during the week made things a little bit more intersting
I really liked this course! taking it online I had a positive experience. I appreciate being able to rent the book online. I thought that the course load was good. The professor was great and always quick to respond to any questions that I had.
Dr. Aguilar-Alvarez is by far the best professor that I have ever met. He is incredibly kind, and passionate about helping students. I was able to do research with him in a one-on-one setting, and it was easily the best choice I made in my collegiate career. He worked tirelessly on the project we were doing together, and I learned a ton from him.
The instructor presented the material in a way that was interesting - he made the boring parts fun and opened new doors on things already well known. Always prepared and ensured that we were prepared as well. SI really helps.
The course overall was manageable and easy to follow up with. There's plenty of slides and notes provided online and the instructor always helped when he could. There's also plenty of extra credit that helps you improve in the course and with your grade. I recommend to purchase a book, it was annoying to only have an online book option.
I really loved the material and learned a lot in this class. Dr. Aguilar gave a lot of feedback on my assignments.
David reviews assignments very thoroughly. He can be picky but helps you understand how to do better. Now I know how to make meal plans and have even been able to help my friends with their diets.
Wonderful teacher! Took this class online and the extra credit helps. Had 6 exams and module assessments with each exam that you can consider exam level themselves. Responds within 24hrs to needs. Didn't use the book much but itll help. Would take a class from him again.
This course was partially virtual due to covid. Very informative. I've done flashcards for the tests and done OK. (Tests and assignments can be hard.) Attend SI when you can!!! Overall, he is a great guy with lots of knowledge.
One of the best classes at WSU, especially for nutr majors. Dr. Aguilar makes it fun and engaging, while still teaching a ton of interesting material. A pretty intense class, like Nutr4440 w/ a lab component. Prof is very approachable and laid back, and incredibly knowledgeable. The material is different from other nutr classes, which I enjoyed.
So , this class was pretty difficult for me , ITS A LOT OF READING. You really need to study if you want to pass, i don't recommend taking it online i would take a virtual class. He does give you opportunities to fix your work and give A TON of extra credit which really helped my grade . He is quick to respond to any emails.
I was able to learn so much and I enjoyed the class a lot. Professor Aguilar-Alvarez was very knowledgeable and helpful. All of the assignments, tests, and lectures were effective aids to learn.
Was very knowledgeable with the material and whenever he was unsure, he would make it clear so we weren't given incorrect information. Made resources attainable between contact and having an online textbook available. Come to class, and more information is given that isn't available on canvas but was available in the book.
I loved taking this course! I found that the assignments helped improve my understanding of nutrition and allowed me to put my skills to the test.
This was a great class to teach me more about research and prepare me for my professional career after graduation.
David is a great instructor, very knowledgeable in the subject matter, and personable and helpful during our meetings. The course helped me learn about, experience, and appreciate the science of Nutrition. I appreciated the opportunities the course and David provided for me. This was a great experience.
This was a good course to learn about different cultures and see how they perceive food usage, but also about their culture as a whole. I really enjoyed learning about all of the different cultures around the world. David was very fair, and enjoyable to learn from.
The course was very interesting the professor did a really good job of making the information retainable, usually some professors make the information really hard and confusing. I really enjoyed this nutrition class.
The Instructor is very knowledgeable about Nutrition and Food Science. It was great to take it from someone with so much experience and expertise. I learned a lot more about nutrition and sustainability than I feel like the course would normally cover because of him.
Very good course. Instructor was very knowledgeable in the topics discussed, and always had time to answer questions during and after class. Great all around, I learned very much about nutrition. I would recommend the class to anyone.
The instructor organized chronologically the material on Canvas; easy to access and follow through each module. Grades were posted almost immediately following assignments. Instructor also provided a an outline of To-Dos for students in upcoming modules along with "Exam preps" on the week of the exam.
I liked the textbook that accompanied this course. It felt good to know that there was some extra credit available to help balance the impact from the difficulty of this course. I also enjoyed the lecture videos, which help to solidify the content that I was learning from the readings.
This class had a lot of busy work. I took it as a half semester class so all the information was condensed. I would recommend taking it as a full semester class. The professor was quick to respond to emails.
I really enjoyed this class! The teacher took the time and energy to answer any questions I had about the lectures I had. I liked that it was a video lecture of the instructor teaching the material instead of just a power point being read.
I thought the course was very well organized. It was easy to understand what and when needed to be done to pass the course. Plenty of resources to get the information needed. Practice Tests for extra credit were helpful study tool.
This online class was very structured. It is easy to succeed in this course because all of the material and expectations are clear. The instructor was very responsive and prompt with questions, which is great for an online class.
There was a lot of interesting information in the course and the instructors passion in the topic was clear. This class is also set up quite simply so the expectations were clear. I liked how David always got back to me through emails and I enjoyed his lectures. I learned so much in this class.
The instructor was always very communicable. Always able to provide the right answer. There are lots of different study activities that helped us practice for the test
I loved the assignments, I learned more from them then the quizzes and exams! The professor was kind and willing to help with homework on a moment of notice.
David is a great instructor, very knowledgeable, personable and helpful during our meetings. This course helped me to appreciate the science of Nutrition. This was a great experience
I really enjoyed this class and the instructor. Everything is taught thoroughly. very interesting course and very worth taking. The professor definitely knew what he was talking about.
David is an extremely versed professor. He was always available to answer questions and provided great feedback for improvement. The course was well structured and provided great working knowledge of cultures and nutritional habits.
This was a great course! I think the instructor was great, was very encouraging and fair, and overall gave a great class. This class was very welcoming and I felt that I was able to improve personally from the class
I could tell the professor was very involved and concerned with the weelbeing and success of his tudents because he took the time to repply to every assignment and answer our questions. I do think a study guide will greatly improve the online portion of this class material.
David is a good professor. He is well organized and understanding. The modules all relate to the exams. He gives practice exams and extra credit. There are 2 exams that aren't actual exams. Super easy class
He was the best! Very understanding and caring. Test and assignments to towards grade but gives extra credit that will apply to the end of the semester. It was an online class and you print off the assignments, do them and put them into the software he uses. They're the exact same questions. I only did bad because I didn't study a lot, study = good
Full disclosure: I took this class expecting an easy gen ed credit and I didn't try as hard as I should've Professor gives good lectures but it's A LOT. Watch the lectures, read the chapters, go to SI sessions then take a 50-question test. If you're looking for an easy gen ed credit look somewhere else. Professor seems nice though.
Everything was pretty clear laid out, the professor gave a weekly rundown to start each week, which was very detailed. Professor answered my questions in a timely manner, powerpoint was very helpful.
I genuinely have never had a professor take so long to respond to emails as him. I sent him so many emails trying to get help on things and it would take him 4-5 days to respond to my emails. My final exam crashed while I was taking it and kicked me out and he was the most frustrating person to try to get in contact with. SUPER frustrating!
David gave a lot of feedback on my assignments which helped me learn even more than what is in the textbook. I appreciated that he took the time to review my work, he seemed to really care about my learning. He clearly knows the material really well. I plan to take another class with him if I can find one that fits!
I took this class fully online, and all of the class material is through a Cengage textbook. The professor was not present and not fast at responding to emails with course material questions. If you can plan ahead and use your time wisely you will pass the class. There is a handful of biology and chemistry involved.
Great professor! This class is pretty challenging for most people but David gives lot of extra credit opportunities. The tests are not too bad. There are practice exams and extra credit work that prepares you for the test. The online text book is pretty easy to use.
