Worst Prof Possible
Hard class to stay interested in, semester long group project, quizzes every class period which are mostly deceptive..good luck
Terrible teacher,in two words: He Sucks! Quizzes every class period and they are designed to trick you not help you. Very deceiving teacher and he loves to wear a suit coat with tennis shoes. Bad teacher don't take unless you love boring classes, hard tests, and to learn nothing.
Horrible professor! Do NOT take him! Very much a teach yourself class with quizzes every class period!
Horrible teacher. Quiz every day class and he does not give enough time for quiz. 15' for 10 long trick questions.Quiz takes 35% total grade. Suck. Not understandable teacher for students.
If for some reason you get stuck with this prof.... wait DONT LET YOURSELF GET STUCK WITH HIM. Super boring, daily quizzes, not helpful, basically the class sucked
Terrible professor. Quizzes everday before he even teaches the chapter. Class is structured the same every day. Not very helpful on project nor on the midterm/final. DON'T TAKE HIM!
Not recommended. Puts zero effort into class and rips everyones material unless it was his idea. Stopped reading the text book after the first two classes. Not clear in his comments.
Agree 100% to previous post. The only correct answer is his opinion. He's the most pompous prof I've ever had. Semester long project, final paper, and group presentation all due on last day of class!
OMG, where to start. Worst professor at St. Thomas. Simply does not teach. Has the students run the class. Never goes over the basics. Grading appears to be random. In 45 years of schooling, I've never seen anyone less skilled in imparting knowledge of their field. Where do I go to get my 42 hours back?
I know more about David Alexander than I do about marketing. The only reasonable explanation of why this man is a professor would be that he doesn't have anyone to talk to. His appearance is a cross between a thumb and Patrick (from Spongebob Squarepants). The only thing entertaining about this class is the fact that he prances around like a queen.
Disregard any of the negative comments you see- this class is easy. The quizzes are easy to the point where you only need to skim the text. Book is good. Prof. lets you earn half the points you got wrong on the test if you correct all of them. Multiple chances for extra credit. Essay final. All tests open note. Nice professor.
Terrible, tonight is the final class and we still have yet to get one grade. DO NOT TAKE- for so many reasons.
Very very dissapointed in my investment in money and time with this class. I did learn a little from the textbook at least.
Did not see a single grade until after the end of the semester. Not sure what the prof was trying to accomplish. I regret taking this class.
As far as some of the comments go, quizes are quite simple, not tricky at all. If you just skim the reading you are guaranteed a B on them. Getting an A is completely doable in the class. He ets you redo the questions you get wrong on tests for half credit. Project is very unclear, however, and worth a lot of your grade. Easy, but not worth it.
1st half of semester is deceiving as grade is based on quizes before class & mid-term where you earn back 1/2 of missed points by re-submitting answers. BUT 55% of your grade is subjective-based on each TEAM's mktg. plan project due 3 days before semester's end and the "all essay final". Both aren't returned! NO feedback on 55% of work!!! A crime!
He is not a bad prof. When I read the comments I was terrified at attending his class, but from the commments I see, I believe he made some improvements. He keeps grades up to date on BB. Ask questions and he will help. There are quizzes, but they are not hard at all. Work on your project from the beginning or you will regret it. Overall good prof!
He gave a page full of insts for every assignment but it was never clear what he expected. He was not happy with anything students wrote and he has a huge ego. He expected us to write a "Team Journal" every week in which we noted who did what in the team. Seriously in a graduate level class? I regret taking the class. Waste of time and money.Sucks!
THE GROUP PROJECT IS A HUGE PORTION OF YOUR GRADE. Choose your team carefully. Instructions for the project are extremely unclear even after you request help. Turn in project early asking for help.
This professor is unfortunately one of the worst I have had at St. Thomas. Classes are super boring. Tons of reading and quizzes almost every class. He is very unclear on what he wants for assignments, and there is a huge project at the end that no one does well on... He's pretty understanding for absences and such, but incredibly boring class.
Hands down the worst class I've taken at UST. You need to read for weekly quizzes, and good luck with the large group project/presentation you work on all semester. David Alexander's lectures were useless and he is of no help on anything. Giant course load and requires marketing research done on the MPLS campus to pass. Don't take him.
Worst class i have taken in my four years here at UST. Speaks to students in ways to make them feel inferior, and does not accept any answers that do not agree with his own personal beliefs. Upon being asked a question during class he simply looked at a student shook his head and walked away. i now know why tenure is a thing.
If you come to class prepared its great. If you don't prepare it sucks. But he was always respectful and I don't believe the characterization that he would just walk off if you asked a question.
He loves marketing so may be overwhelming. Tells you when youre right and tells you when you are wrong. Expects too much since most not marktg majors. But i learned a ton.
At the end of the semester I didn't like him. I'm a month into my internship now and I realize that I'm using everything he taught and I get it and I'm way ahead of the Carlson goofs I'm working with. So take him even if its a lot of work.
The design project is great. Lot of work.
I'm taking other marketing classes now and see how much better prepared I am because of his class. Will definitely take him again if I can now.
David is an awesome professor. The lectures are pretty boring but he also gives you a lot of extra credit opportunities. The exams are open note and you have a quiz on each chapter.
Professor Alexander is a bit strange but is very passionate about marketing. He has high expectations and team exams are brutal. However, if you ask him for help on the team exams, and take good notes for the semester exams you will be fine.
I believe this man is too smart for his own good. He does not accept other students answers, having his own strict beliefs. We would ask him at the end of the class "so nothing is due before next class" and five minutes later he would contradict himself, telling us something is due. He does not listen to his students. Would avoid if possible.
David Alexander is truly the worst college professor I have ever had in my tenure at the University of St. Thomas. Not only is he a rude individual--he is just genuinely a bad teacher. I think the guy is really smart, but he lacks people skills and the character necessary to lead students. I truly do not wish his condescending demeanor on anyone.
He is smart and challenging. Weird project making us work on our LinkedIn profile. Can see people being intimidated. Lot's of practical experience.
Is okay. Long lectures. Doesnt cold call. Asks for feedback and seems to adjust to it. Lot of work without clear grading criteria.
Prof. Alexander knows a lot about marketing. However, he is easily one of the worst teachers/profs I've ever had. Assigns lengthly assignments with A TON of directions. Tries to make them "easy" for you but you if you don't do them like he would, he gives you a terrible grade. Tough grader, LONG lectures, tons of busy work. DO NOT TAKE.
He is all about himself. He wants to tell you what he thinks is right and wrong. David doesn't allow student much time to talk unless you are doing one of his activities which are waste of time. I thought this class would be about innovation, but man was I wrong. Do NOT take this elective unless you want to be bored. He likes to hear himself talk.
I would avoid him at all costs. He is a very harsh grader; he isn't clear at explaining what he wants. There are a couple presentations. The homework assignments ask for a lot. Not entirely sure if he takes attendance, but collects a feedback sheet after class. It's clear he doesn't consider the feedback he gets. I'd suggest finding a better prof.
It's a lot of work. Classes were better before we had to go online. He tried to keep everyone involved, but online wasn't a good way to learn anything.
Crams a lot into 7 weeks. Lots of lecture but no textbook. Does a lot of reviewing so doesn't go very deep into marketing. Probably better for non-marketing major.
Wayyy too much work for a 2 credit class. He is very demanding and can be super rude.
avoid taking him at all costs!!!! Very tough grader for no reason. Bad at explaining assignments and then takes points off when you do them wrong. Any time a question is asked he tells you that the info is on Canvas but not where to find it and if you do find it there is no explanation on slides just titles and pictures that dont tell you anything!
Dr. Alexander is an extremely passionate marketing professor don't get me wrong. However, for taking an introductory marketing class as a non-marketing major you really have to work for the grade. He's an extremely picky grader, gives a difficult midterm, 5+ group projects, & expects a lot from you. Don't take him and expect to coast and not work.
One of the worst teachers I've came across in my whole life, might be the worst professor at UST.
Everything in Canvas up front. Lectures and then breakouts are good for me. Very tough grader. Maybe too much stuff crammed into 7 weeks.
Definitely worst prof at UST. Acts like hes at Carlson. Doesnt understand Tommies. I dont need marketing to get a job so stop acting like it is so important. If I cared, I would be a marketing major.
Tells great stories. Explains why marketing is relevant to non-majors. Doesn't get Tommies? lol. trolls. One test, take home, all the answers are in his lectures on Canvas. 2 team projects/presentations. Lot's of homework. Has spent more time with me outside of class than anyone outside my major. Cares about me getting it. hate online. love prof.
Dr. Alexander is one of the nicest profs at St. Thomas. He has spent more time with me outside of class than any prof outside my major. Cares most about me getting it. Good powerpoints, interesting stories, not very hard but a lot of work. 1 take home test. 2 team presentations, lots of homework. Really thinks marketing is important.
Do not even consider taking him, if you have the option, take any other professor. He is a very harsh grader, the majority of your grade is based on group projects and exams. For reference, the average for our first exam was 73%. The class average grade right now is a C+. If you take this professor, you likely won't get a good grade.
You'll never work harder for a B or C in your entire life. Several assignments and group projects that move very quick. Everything he says and the projects alone are absolutely irrelevant to marketing. He looks for anyway to doc points of your work and is a very harsh grader. Look a different direction for Marketing 300 and do not take his course.
He is a tough grader. He doesnt explain assignments well, then he takes off point for thing he didnt specify. He gives out a lot of work for a small amount of points.
Prof Alexander was not my favorite. Most of his assignments had lengthy instructions but still some how didn't make sense. When you ask for help he gives the same description of the assignment and nothing is really clarified. He wants everything to be worded exactly how he would word it otherwise it's incorrect. Hard to know exactly what he wants.
Don't get me wrong Prof. Alexander seems like a smart guy, but is the worst professor I have had at UST. His assignments are terribly long and he grades them based off of how well you understand his 10 paragraph instructions. He expects a ton out of students who are just taking the class because it is required. Avoid him at all costs.
Read instructions, do well. Don't read the instructions, get crushed. Worst is so much team grades because so many don't care and just want do finish core class. Would be 5 otherwise.
His classes are nice, you get to learn a lot but his homework are long and difficult to understand, also his class activities are difficult with long descriptions that confuse you a lot. His grading is hard and he can give you zero. His lectures are well organize and he provides a lot of examples. If you want to challenge yourself take his class
Terrible teacher I never meet someone with such a high Eco and Cocky I never meet a teacher that make his students feel inferior and literally stupid. If you can skip his class do it and waste your money and time
Was one of the best classes I've had so far. Not a marketing major but learned things that will make me a better financial analyst. Everything he said in class was followed with a group breakout and an assignment. Asks you to email questions. Answered every question in detail. Invests an incredible amount of time in you if you want.
This class was just awful. His assignments were just a bunch of nonsensical abstract demands that were harshly graded. even after reading the assignment -you have no idea what he wants. He gets very annoyed very easily. class was heavily group worked centered. No text book nor any good reference materia. I would not recommend taking his class.
Loved this professor. Really challenging. Lots of examples in the lectures helped. I got the optional textbook and needed it because of missing class. Showed how marketing isn't just advertising and selling and was important for me in finance. Everything was group work. Have to work outside of class. My group was great. Other groups weren't.
Dr. Alexander has very specific requirements for projects, but even when requirements are met he marks them wrong. He is very condescending towards students when we voice that something was misgraded. His class is very lecture heavy and the course itself is mainly on sustainability rather than marketing. He is difficult to follow in lectures.
Tough grader. Can be rude and harsh. Assigns unusually long readings with unreal expectations that they are remembered clearly. Does not care about students learning speeds. The class is at HIS pace!!! He does not cultivate a learning environment either.
a couple of individual homeworks, a couple team homeworks, big team projects, tells you EXACTLY how things are graded. assigned to teams and if you get lazy teammates it's tough. each class has lecture and then group exercises. i got the optional textbook. everything on canvas. learned a lot. not what i thought marketing was.
This had to be the easiest class at St. Thomas. No book, no reading, no prep for class, easy to follow lecture, everything in Canvas up front, assignments explain exactly how you earn points, final exam is open notes and he tells you some questions. Downside is team assignments if people wont work. Seems to care about students doing well.
Dr. Alexander is a professor who is very passionate about the topics he is teaching. But the one thing he is more passionate about is having his students understand those topics. The class is very straight forward as long as you show up and participate. His class was very centered around team based work so make sure you get you're team to work.
DO NOT TAKE!!! Very hard grader his way or the highway.
Do not take this professor. His homework assignments are very unclear and his grades very hard. If you get him as a professor transfer out of his class.
Great class. Nice professor. Always available. Lot's of team assignments but time to meet with team in class. Very clear on how he grades so make sure you read the instructions for each assignment. Challenges you in a good way.
Do not under any circumstance! If you ignore my advice, you can look forward to non-stop group projects and presentations, lots of work outside of class, and a 2 credit class that feels like a 6 credit. He is a nice guy but he could not have given less clear instructions if he tried. Brutal final. Paragraphs of instructions that leave you confused.
This guy just...ugh. Only 7 assignments the whole semester and was strict on EVERYTHING. Final was in an essay format which not only doesn't make sense for a business course, but it is impossible to ace. This business class felt like a heavy English class. Avoid him at all costs. His lectures will put you to sleep guaranteed.
don't listen to the good reviews. The bad reviews are all true. Drop him if you don't have to take him.
For your own sakes do not take this Professor. He's horrible at communicating and often gives very vague instructions. The way he grades the assignments is more subjective than objective and he's a harsh grader. He is also a boring in lecture he is just very boring and not a good Professor don't take him.
I would strongly advise against enrolling in his class. There are lots of group projects with meetings outside of regular class hours. Moreover, the grading system is notably stringent and places a high value on specific criteria.
Really nice guy. cares about whether you learn. Class is easy but work. Take him if you want to learn about marketing. Miss if you want to skate.
Loves to give several pages of super unclear instructions for what should be short, simple assignments. Will tank your grade if you miss the smallest detail. Shames students for taking notes on anything but paper-and-pencil. Actual material of the class was easy, but his teaching style made it a struggle. Do NOT recommend taking this professor!
If you're a marketing major, I would strongly advise against taking this professor. If not, I still advise against it. Many group projects, very few assignments graded, and very unclear instructions. Rambles during lectures and says the most preposterous claims about marketing. Treats the intro class like it's the most important thing in the world.
This class got difficult towards the end, however it was nothing crazy. The assignments have very specific instructions, which you must follow to get points. The concepts were thoroughly covered and it was clear what you would need to know for the final. You get to use some paper for a note card on the final. I highly recommend filling every inch.
This guy is a self-obsessed human being who could care less about his students. If you take this class prepare for a 7 page essay final - in person, and an group presentation worth 50%. St. Thomas made a big mistake giving this guy a paycheck. Save your money and your time... take someone else.
Professor Alexander's homework and group project assignments are loaded with pages and pages of unclear instructions. The final is 7 pages with very vague instructions.
Pretty easy. Open note final has 7 short essay questions, you pick 6. He tells you 2 questions on the exam and gives answer during lecture. A couple of team projects which can be tough if your team doesn't help. Very detailed instructions that have to be followed. Always available to help. Two team presentations are 30 pts each out of 300.
I am begging you - please do not take Professor Alexander's class. Homework assignments are incredibly unclear and super long. He will give you a bad grade for not understanding the assignment, but if you email for clarification on what you can improve, he doesn't tell you! Makes sus claims about marketing that aren't backed by fact.
He seems like a nice guy, but he is the worst professor I've had. He lacks social queues and makes a required two credit class very overwhelming. He is an extremely harsh grader and has pages of directions for simple tasks. Does not prepare you for the final (its difficult). Do NOT take Professor Alexander.
Easily the worst professor I've ever had, and probably the worst i ever will have. Super hard grader, docks points for random things. Also knows nothing about marketing and says things that just aren't true. Super hard final that he doesn't prepare you for (Average score on final is 70%). DO NOT TAKE HIM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.
Take anyone else. I thought he would be fine but he is the worst professor at this school. He makes you take all of your notes in a little 6-inch notebook, with no computers. His lectures are very dry, and doesn't want you copying down the slides, so he moves very fast. His final is 2.5 hours straight of writing.
Ok, but maybe don't blame the prof for your bad grade? 🤷‍♀️ He's tough, yeah, but fair. Put in the work, and you'll actually learn something. 💁‍♀️
Omg, this marketing class was soooo tough lol. 😅 Having a solid team was EVERYTHING!! 💯 The group work was challenging but def helped me grow! Wouldn't have survived without them tbh! 🙌
Dudes, this marketing class was actually pretty sick. Open-note final? Clutch. Team assignments? Less work for me. The prof's kinda quirky, but like, in a cool way. You can tell he really cares about you getting it. Honestly, 10/10 would take again—felt more like hanging out than learning!
He made class super engaging! I loved the project and real-world examples—definitely boosted my skills and confidence!
Honestly one of the more difficult courses and for a two credit course…cmon now. Not many assignments but you'll spend so long on them they might as well be papers. Teacher is honest and straight up about homework but honestly explains too much that at that point it doesn't make sense anymore. I DO NOT recommend this teacher at all.
Professor Alexander is a tough BUT fair professor. To begin with negatives, the course was very challenging for a 2-credit course, and it is heavily group dependent. However, the lectures were very engaging and very fun. He is very personable. As long as you communicate with him, he will 1000% work with you. Make sure to study for the final!!
Would have dropped this class solely because of this teacher, if I could have been able to. He gave way too much work at the end and will never give students 100% on any assignment.
