He scales EVERYTHING!! You could make a 55 on a test and that would end up being a B... it depends on the mean of your class for EACH and EVERY assignment. It's takes lots of talent to FAIL his class.
Tests are hard. Hes one thatll give a 100 pt test and the class avg is a 55. He does scale the tests, but the class avg is the highest C. Next 15 points B. So you have to score 16 pts above the class avg to have an A-. Not as easy as it sounds.
Very intense professor--honor students learn more than usual and all grades are curved so average students get an average grade; he has it mastered; LOVE his classes (taken several); makes everything intuitive, not memorized. No better econ teacher. KUDOS

Dr. Allen is a horrible horrible man. I went to him for help and he told me that we went over it in class. What a jerk! How can people like him be proud to be a professor?!
Stop with the obsessive coffee drinking, man.
Does not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act; had to put off my Dr.'s appointment for 3 months because he would not allow me to either take a quiz early or make it up (could only see the VA Dr. on quiz days).
I've never had a professor who wasn't willing to tell me exactly what chapters to read for a TEST (not quiz...test.) He stated to study the material covered in class. (DUH!) I did well in the class but it's becuase _I_ read the book thoroughly and sought outside sources for help.
Horrible teacher
very unclear, especially about material he gives on the tests. the review sheets for the test are very general and do not help you study. very boring class and too difficult for the material being covered. i would not take him again
tests were very hard but if you know the study guides and homework sets well, you will be fine. makes econ interesting.
the tests are incredibly hard, but he curves (MAJORLY). when you can never pass a test and still get a B in the class, there's something wrong. don't expect to gain any significant knowledge of economics.
Very dry teaching style and seemed very closed off to outside help. Material was not too difficult, but the quizzes can be very tricky in his wording of the questions. Tests covered what was on the quizzes and in homework. Study sheet is vague, but not outside the scope of the test. I would not take him again, but got out of this class with a B
Very much into hearing himself speak with no regard whatsoever to the students. To add to that, he's extremely rude and unforgiving.
Dr. Allen is very rude, and a pathetic teacher and excuse for a human

Ridiculously horrible teacher. Received a B in the class, and his teaching is poor. Class does not really participate we just sat there. Getting an A in the class requires that you be lucky. Smart students will mot likely end up with a B'. Students who don't even try can get B's too due to the scale. don't rely on it too much though.
I don't know what class you guys were in, but he was excellent for my class. Anyone is a great teacher after coming off of Stafford for 142. I frickin hated that guy, but Allen was great. He was pretty funny and actually made this boring a$$ class interesting.

****!! Not willing to be fair... TOO HARD FOR A FRESHMAN LEVEL CLASS... NEEDS TO BE FIRED!
He covers a lot of material... does not encourage questions or student partipation or true learning. Tests are ridiculously hard and he counts off for EVERY error. Shows no true interest in helping students actually learn.
Is not helpful with questions, and a horrible teacher. Confusing tests and quizes, again, very unhelpful. Lacks care for his students and what they think. Try to search for alternative professor when taking econimics.
This guy SUCKS!!!!!He is not willing to help students with problems and his tests are unreal!!Very egotistical and has a superiority complex. He has to be right about everything and everyone is is always wrong....
Horrible teaching skills! I ended up dropping the class. I think this man thinks he is doing his job when he makes the class too hard! Class averages on tests were usually in the 60's. His ego is bigger than his hair, and that is saying a lot!
2 Words: STAY AWAY. He is very tunnel visioned and only thinks what he says is the law. He dosen't ever ask for opinions and his tests are very difficult. His notes leaves out lot of information that WILL appear on tests. If you do dare to take him, bring a voice recording device, you will need it.

Try to avoid this teacher. The lectures aren't that bad, and he does a decent job teaching. The problem lies in the tests. While he does teach some of the material, not everything on the test is taught in class. Also, the tests are incredibly hard; he has to grade on a bell curve in order to pass people. Good luck getting an A.
I took Allen for macro and micro because I really learned a lot from his teaching style. His tests are very hard, but he gives you study sheets and homework sets that let you know pretty much what will be on the tests. He helps you in every way he can during class, but isn't as helpful outside of class.
I had Dr. Allen for micro, and I really enjoyed his class. His class was pretty difficult, but he was always helpful and I found him humorous. He also grades on a curve, so who's complaining? I got an A.
I had him for macro and micro and the only thing you have to do to pass this class is go to class. Sure his test are hard, but if you go to class they will be easy.
He's a really nice guy. The class was really easy... all you have to do is go to class, actually take notes, then read your notes. It's not a class that you will get by in if you don't put in the work. Plain and simple.

write down everything he puts on the board and read over your notes before class each day and you will do fine... he scales grades
Has a crazy scale, where a 55 is a "C", but his test are hard, and you cannot miss class. It is immposible to fail, and extremely hard to get an "A".
Great grading scale. Notes are clear, and he tells you what parts of your notes will be on the test. Expect HW 'sets' to be on tests. Go over notes for 15 min. before class to prepare for pop quizzes. I thought this class was easy.
I hate economics but i have an A in the class. he is a good teacher and the scaled test grades help a lot
This class sucked. If it wasn't for his insane grading scale where a 55 is roughly a C, nearly the entire class would have failed. I don't recommend him, and I definitly won't be taking any more of his classes.
Wow, judging by the comments left for him, I guess everyone though college was supposed to be easy. Go to class and take notes. Read the notes well in advance of the test, and make sure you understand the notes. Also, the book was helpful in explaining things in a different way that Allen, and I found that useful. This class wasn't bad at all.
Write what he writes and whatever you need to understand it. Not the teacher to take if you're looking for an easy A. 7-10 unannounced quizzes and 3-5 homeworks.
I found his test grading to be unfair, which was evidenced by the exceedingly low class average on each one. He was unsympathetic and difficult to approach.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. I have not evnjoyed the class thus far and do not follow/understand his teaching method. If possible, seek other professors for ECN courses.
Dr. Allen was fairly easy, actually, but also super boring and uninteresting. Not recommended.
I did not enjoy this test. His grading is ridiculously hard. Even though i had the write answer i would get the entire question wrong because i didn't explain it in enough detail. I do not recommend taking this teacher.
its hard to grasp what he is saying.if you have a question dont ask he'll just try to make you feel stupid without giving you a real answer. his lectures were boring and hard to follow. he gets real angry if you leave class early. or if there is no eraser for the white board (funny). i do not recommend this instructor at all.
The class is hard, but you gotta show up to it. And it helps to have a friend in his other class so you can share quizzes and homeworks because they are all different! Write down every note possible and study everything you can! The quizzes are ok, but you never know when one is coming! All the tests are cumulative! Grades are scaled.
he is a good professor if you are willing to learn. if you want an easy class don't take him you will have to work but in the end it is worth it. quizes are kind of easy test are hard multiple choice are tricky and math problems can be. make sure you show all work he is very very picky. he does grade on a curve
He was tough and mind blowingly boring. Like whoa
Not much has changed since I had him for micro. Still arrogant and unhelpful as always. Study all your notes and have a thorough understanding and you'll be okay. Also, it helps if you can get old tests/quizzes from former students. They make good study guides and some of the questions may be on the tests :) We had to write a paper too. ugh!
This is a pretty difficult class for the freshman level but couldn't be taught by a more knowledgable professor. Dr Allen grants great insight into economics and prepares his students for a future in the department. If you want an easy class, don't take him.. but if you want to learn the material and be a head of the curve, this is your guy.
Horrible instructor. Not helpful at all and rude to the extreme.
Warning DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFFESOR. Seriously, he is not helpful. Has a smart attitude. Test are hard even if you study. The book is useless because he teaches his was so dont buy it. Grades are curved, but honestly if they weren't the whole class would fail. A test grade of 48 is like B or A in the class. A 48 are u kidding me! DO NOT TAKE HIM!
A test grade of a 48 is not a B in his class, I do not know why people keep saying that here. A 48 is a C.
It is not an easy class and you do need to make sure you understand the concept and calculations of everything that you learn. Practice going over graphs and formulas. Don't be afraid to ask for help because any extra help you can get do it. I recommend working in groups with homework and studying.
I actually loved this class. Although he is difficult and a twinge anal... if you take notes and pay attention you should do well. He presents the material in a very clear manner and repeats difficult concepts in different ways to make sure you get it.
The person below me must be Dr. Allen himself. lol I made a A in Yimin Ye's ECN 142 class; explain how I could make a D in Allen's? The guy makes his test very unfair.
He explains the material fairly well and is a fair lecturer however his grading is poor, when I asked him about a grade on a particular problem he replied with, "The way I grade changes from case to case. Generally if someone were to get the analysis right but make a math error they won't get credit, [you get partial credit for bad work]-truncated"
Just wow
This IS a tough class, but it's definitely manageable. You MUST attend every class because all material is from the notes. If you take decent notes, the homework sets are fairly easy to do well on, but make sure to follow his written instructions or he takes points off. Quizzes and tests are difficult, but graded on a curve. Not the worst ever.
I think he is so smart he lost all ability to communicate with his student, knows alot about economics, but is real hard, his grading scale is helpful
This class is hard in that Dr. Allen is very picky about answers on tests and homework. However, you won't fail and it's relatively easy to get an A in the class because an 80 is usually an A in his class. It is somewhat hard talking to him because he seems to be intimidating, but he does care and will help you.
Very frustrating
I do not recommend this professor.
I passed the AP Microeconomics exam but took the class anyways. I got a C without a horrendous amount of work but, again, I had a huge amount of econ background. He is very obsessive compulsive about his colored dry erase markers. He has an awesome curve and it isn't hard to pass but if you want an A you need to make this class your PRIORITY.
Allen is by far the worst teacher I have ever had.He has to scale his tests to the point where a 19 is a D.He is a smart guy but a terible terrible teacher. He uses retarded words and phrases that he makes up and does not fit into the conversation. I passed with a C but it was still hard to get that. Stay Away From This Teacher!
Obviously knows his stuff but isn't an interesting teacher. He teaches even the freshman level courses as if we're all Econ majors. Class is easy if you go every class, pay attention and take REALLY good notes. He doesn't use the book at all so don't buy it.
Very confusing class. Dr. Allen is very smart, but he can't translate the class onto a student level. I wouldn't recommend taking this class to anyone.
Dr. Allen is a hard teacher. He explains what he wants you to know. Show up to class and take notes. Do all the homework. It does not help to ask questions. He is a lecturer and talks to the board the majority of class. Allen enjoys sports.
Dr. Allen is certainly not the easiest professor at UAH, but he teaches the information crystal clear to make homework and tests easy. His bell curve allows some errors to be made and still come out with a good grade. You are an idiot if you fail his class and an idiot for not taking Dr.Allen.
He definitely knows his stuff. He doesn't use the textbook whatsoever, don't even bother with buying it. Just take down all of the notes. He is not interested in the student at all, he just comes to work, does his thing, then leaves. That's pretty much it for him. Not a good professor to take in my opinion.
Allen doesn't like to teach. Period. Likes to talk to the board, and not interact with students. You should avoid him unless you are forced to take his class.
Dr. Allen is obviously very intelligent, and knows his stuff. However, is is often condescending and comes off a bit arrogant. If you ask a question in class he sometimes makes you look foolish. I made a C with minimal work outside of class. However, he RARELY gives partial credit, if you miscalculate on a question, be prepared for it to cost you.
He knows what he's talking about, but he's a tough teacher. He will NOT give you partial credit for working out the homework problems correctly, but getting an incorrect answer. REALLY pay attention to the directions on the homework. If you want a decent grade in there, you need to go to class AND P.A.S.S.
Do not take him. He is the worst teacher I've had. He counts off on homework for not showing simple addition or for not putting an item on a separate piece of paper. He does not care about the students at all. He talks to the board. Definitely will not take him again.
Mr. Allen obviously knows the material very well. However he does not know how to teach it to students on a beginner's level. The only way to reach him is to ask the question in class, he doesnt respond to emails and he barely likes talking in office hours. He has a semi-arrogant attitude. And the tests and homework are graded unfairly.
Honestly the worst professor I have EVER had. He counts off on homework if you write on the back of the sheet, even if you make it out. Also, he counts off if you don't show every little detail...even though it is easily seen what student meant. STAY AWAY...STAY FAR AWAY!
Sports economics. Shows he is smarter than you. Acts bothered. Yells at you if you walk in front of him. Other than that's it's an ok class. Make sure you know someone who has taken him before because without warnings you will have a hard time passing.
HE does not care much about the students and gets very annoyed of people walking in late. But hes a good teacher and if you come to class everyday and actually listen you can get an A. His class does not require much studying but just listening and being able to understand. He is very clear on his teaching
Thought he was a good teacher and go to class and you will be fine
Everyone complaines about Dr. Allen, but he is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. If you just go to class and acctually pay attention and study your notes, you will be fine. He is a REALLY picky grader on the tests, but after he scales 1982734981 points you actually come out with a decent grade. A 65 was a B on one test. I recommend.
Go to class and you will do well. Skip or play on your phone in class and you will struggle. He gets absorbed in his material a bit but is helpful if you are polite.
GO to class if you want to pass. You will write notes the entire time.Has quizzes, homeworks, and tests. The final is semi-comprehensive.Know how to do all the math problems! FIND SOMEONE WHO HAS ALREADY TAKEN HIM AND GET THEIR ALL THE STUFF, ESPECIALLY THEIR TESTS. GOOD LUCK. BTW his scale is 80-100=A 65-79=B etc. Hard to get an A but harder to fail
Go to class, take notes, do the homework, study for the quizzes, and study ALL material (hw, quizzes, etc) for the test, and you should do alright. If you can get old notes and stuff from other people, it will greatly improve your odds of passing. Every once in a while you will see something on the test that he didn't teach, but it isn't too bad.
MAKE SURE you review as much as possible of EVERYTHING like homework, etc before the test Do this, and you will do alright. Don't, and you won't.
He is just a talking head with an arrogant attitude. Homework is graded extremely unfairly with NO partial credit given for any work done and just leaves little notes like "vague?" regardless if correct. He does not go over economic formulas well in class, he just expects you to get it. Won't communicate outside class at all. Will not take again.
If possible, take another professor. You will have weekly homework due and he grades them harshly. Quizzes are ok but tests are hard and he does not cover all the material in class that is on the test. His lectures are very dry and all his experience is from books and analysis; not from real world experience. He has not had a real job in the biz.
Easy class. I didn't take a single note and hardly studied. Show up and looked through the book before quizzes, and do the homework. For tests he gives a study guide. Review what is on it and you will make an A. Follow his instructions and you will do great, don't follow them and then you're screwed, but that's you're fault. He is very passionate.
Doesn't go over any of the mathematical parts of the material, but has three problems that are worth a lot on the exams. Plus he throws in a couple of things that aren't covered and in a class where you need every point to pass this hurts.
Dr. Allen has his own way of doing things, but I think his class is very straight to the point. Come to class and take notes; his lectures are extremely clear and easy to follow. His grading scale is, at a glance, easy, but you will realize it takes effort to do well in his class. He is not rude nor arrogant and his assignments are not bad at all.
He is a very awful teacher, doesn't care if you don't get the material. If you ask a question he won't answer and says you should already know everything. He grades like a we are in a graduate class. He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He deserves a -10.
He teaches a 100 level class like it is a graduate course.
Here's the thing. If you did well in your other Econ classes this class is easy. If you struggled, you're going to struggle again. It's nothing new in the lectures just a new way to apply the stuff from other classes. Write down literally everything he writes on the board and if you're following well the tests are fine.
Write down everything he writes down on the board, and you will be good to go. Test multiple choice and problems come from the lectures and examples worked in class. The lectures are structured around the book, but the lectures are enough to teach you the material. If you put forth effort, he will notice and appreciate it. Pay attention in class.
You will write the ENTIRE time. He is not very good at explaining topics in any more detail than what he writes on the board. He will not post ANYTHING on Canvas and there is not a tutor for his class. On the plus side, his grading scale is fairly forgiving. If you have to take him, good luck.
Very long and somewhat boring on the lectures, but he does his best to keep attention and make it entertaining really laid back guy and likes to do acting the part to get you to understand the material better
He's a business professor and I'm an engineering student. So as far as level of difficulty, this class isn't that bad. The man is a living meme. He's a great dude and I wish I had more classes with him. You have to show up to class because he doesn't use canvas. However, if he sees you in class regularly he is likely to help you out.
Dr. Allen is incredible, while the lectures can go a little long, the dude is a living meme. He is hilarious in class, and while they're not actual jokes, the things he says crack me up. Just his diction and mannerisms make you want to pay attention if only to see more. I loved the class and the man teaching made it all the better.
This was an extremely hard class. If you are an ECON major you will probably be fine. It was very lecture heavy. You will need to take notes the whole class period. The only good thing was his grading scale. If you miss one class, you will be lost.
Dr. Allen is the best econ teacher at Uah. He is very knowledgable and passionate about what he is teaching. He is a tough grader but just follow his instructions and take notes and you will do fine. He makes the topics interesting and is very clear to understand.
While I wouldn't agree with a large amount of the reviews for Dr. Allen, he is quite an odd individual. VERY strict in format and guidelines of things. An 80-100 is an A in his class to tell you about difficulty of his teaching. Doesn't post anything online and writes on the board the entire class, so be prepared for that. Not bad but not the best.
Allen is a really tough professor and a hard grader, however he does explain the material well. His tests are quite difficult, mainly all of the conceptual MC problems. He has a very unusual grading scale where A 100-80, B 79-60 and so on, which helps you quite a bit in the class.
He is the worst. I wouldnt suggest anyone take his classes. He will count off on tests even if you answer correctly, just because its not worded exactly how he wants. Definitely my least favorite professor I have ever had!!!
You have to show up for every class. Miss a class and you are lost. Listen to him and take good noted. No technology is used. He writes everything on the board, no canvas. Study your notes daily and cram as much of the notes into your head before the test. Study the homework problems hard before the tests as well.
Avoid this professor! Extremely harsh grader. He marks clearly correct answers as wrong and there is no way to resolve it. Large amount of material and non stop note taking. No canvas, you must keep up with every single sheet of paper for the final and to track your grade. Tests are hard and review sheets do not help.
He clearly knows what he's talking about, but he doesn't always explain things in a way that students can understand. He doesn't use Canvas, so show up to class, write down everything that he does, and keep up with your papers so you can calculate your grade. Make sure to do the test reviews and really understand the homework.
He doesnt use canvas at all so good luck keeping up with your grade. He gives you a schedule of all quizzes and tests but you have no idea when homework is coming. If you sit far away from him good luck reading anything he writes or says.
Literally the worst professor Ive ever had. He notarizes his homework question handouts to make sure you cant make a copy for your classmates if they miss even though he doesnt have an attendance policy. He hardly gives partial credit. None of his grades are uploaded online and you have to use his teaching blog. Avoid at all costs.
No canvas no power points! You have to just show up and copy verbatim what he write out. Show your work even on simple math. Was not willing to help even though my answers where right. He docd me points for not showing very very simple math written out in what he said proper arithmetic form has very minimum point scale. Every little point matters
He may know his material, but he is unable to teach it and refuses to adapt to the classroom and what the class needs from him. He only lectures and seems to teach the material as if it's more difficult than what it truly is, especially for a 100s class.
Professor Allen was not very helpful when asking questions and writes everything on a board. Every quiz and test is from the notes so show up to class, and class is has a limited amount of points. The only good thing about his class that a 80-100 is considered an A.
While there are many people who didnt like Dr. Allens teaching style, I enjoyed it! He writes all of his notes on a whiteboard. He has quizzes and a few homework sets. His class is not too difficult if you pay attention. It is obvious how passionate he is about the material, and he did a great job teaching it.
He uses the whiteboard over the projector which makes it hard to see what he writes from the back of the class. Can also be hard to hear him in the large lecture hall. However, he teaches the material well. Homework is strict but are the written part of the test so an east 20-30% on the test if you learn it. Tests are heavily fact based so memorize
The class isn't set up for you to learn anything. The grading scale is so whack that you will pass no matter what, but you'll leave the class knowing nothing. Do exactly what he requires no matter how crazy it sounds because you will get heavily penalized via your grade.
I took this class as a hybrid and it was horrific. The way he teaches is that you have lecture one day and a podcast (super unhelpful to learn math) for the other day of class. The book was recommended but even he didn't know where we were so you just had the lecture to go off. Insanely picky when it comes to grading and not consistent. Do not take
David Allen is the most confusing & difficult professor I have ever been taught by in my time at UAH. He isnt flexible if his students have covid, expecting a classmate to bring them the notarized homework and turn it in for them. His tests are very specific and easy to get wrong, and he showed has up to class with a homework set 20 mins late.
Allen is by far the worst professor I have ever encountered. 300 level classes are easier than his 100. He does not engage the class, but simply rambles and talks at students (instead of to students) for an hour. He does not answer emails or use Canvas. He shows up 20 minutes late, notarizes homework, and grades extremely harsh. RUN
He is very passionate about the subject. He is not going to go easy on the tests or his grading, but he does grade on a scale. You'll be responsible for keeping up with your grades for your personal use. He uses very little technology. The notes and lectures translate fairly close to tests/quizzes so I wouldn't skip.
Very confusing and talks down to students when they ask a question. He will teach you one thing for 2 weeks and then come test time the problems will be completely different.
While he is knowledgeable, he is just not a very good at teaching. He is also very rude to students, especially when they ask questions. Probably my least favorite teacher I have ever had.
His class is tough but he writes on the board & gives good lectures
Avoid this mf. He tries his hardest to make this easy subject into a hard class and I'm convinced wouldn't give partial credit on a question even if it would solve world hunger. Should've dropped this teacher when I had the chance.
He is obnoxious and does not put grades on canvas whatsoever. He notarizes his hwk so you have to be there to receive it. Not there for a quiz? 0 even with excuse. The class is boring and he makes it tough to make himself feel better. Beware, will take off points for writing on back side of hw, writing problem 2 on 1st page, etc. Lazy much?
He's hard cl
Has quite good lectures but all HW and quizes are all on paper and you need to keep track of your own grades which isn't too bad. He seems to care a good bit about student learning. very tough on grading but 80-100 in his class is an A so it all evens out.
Dr Allen was a tough teacher, but had a very good and int
Professor Allen runs a tough class, but engaging with his specific system can pay off. The lectures are worth attending, and using tools like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helps with study prep. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding experience.
