Great teacher. NEED the textbook to pass, since a lot of homework comes from it, and studying out of it for tests is pretty much essential. Clicker questions daily.
His tests are very difficult. Enough said
Dr. Appy is really cool. The class can be tough but he does his best to make things interesting.
He was my favorite teacher. He likes to make jokes.
Very good professor. Tests are tough, but if you put in effort, you'll pass easily. Come to class. Read the book.
Dr. Appy makes a clear effort to make a connection with his students and be in direct access for any concerns or issues. Best eight AM you could have.
Appy makes class fun and actually talks to the students. He understand that chemistry is hard for most and is always willing to help. LOTS of demos during lectures. His notes are great and interactive, really easy to follow. Homework is a little tough and the exams are relatively tough as well.
Probably one of the more interesting professor's I've ever had. Inspirational and hilarious. Tests are tough if you don't go to class. Skip class? You won't pass! He's pretty hilarious but I feel like most of the class don't get his jokes. He's easy on the eyes too!
By far my favorite professor so far. If you're familiar with Chem it will be very easy. Lectures are not boring at all, he is very humorous, clicker questions every day, small % of grad. Is always willing to help you if needed. Makes the topics very easy to understand. Exams are kind of difficult and cover a lot of material. I highly recommend him!
Lectures follow the book closely. 1-3 extra credit questions (ECQ) per test are on somewhat obscure topics. If Dr. Appy gets excited about something in class that's an "aside", it's a prime target for an ECQ. Genuinely cares about students' overall well-being. Attend class and read the book and you'll do fine.
Exams were kind of hard, but if you really do the homework, you will be fine. One homework every week, graded on completeness. Dr. Appy has been my favorite professor so far at ISU.
Dr. Appy is my most favorite professor ever. He teaches with ease, a lot of cool demos so you actually understand better. If you pay attention in class and write notes (he hates laptop) you'll get an easy A for every exams. Beware of the final exam though. It was hard but I still managed to get an A for his class. Good luck !
He explains things really well in lecture, and seems to really care about his students. Unfortunately, the exams are a lot harder than the examples in class and you don't get a whole lot of time to work out each problem. The averages so far were 55 and 48, and he does not curve the exams. Unless you have a strong background in Chem, don't take him.
Dr. Appy knows his stuff and is very passionate about what he teaches, however, his tests were very hard and you really have to know the material in and out to succeed. If you are really good at Chem, then he is a great professor to take the class with. If you aren't I highly recommend taking it with someone else.
Dr. Appy expects a lot out of his students. His tests are much harder than examples you do in class. Don't take chem with him unless you have a strong background in chemistry. Average exam scores were in the 40-50 range.
I didn't know what working hard meant until I took Dr. Appy's class. If you want to pass his class you must work above and beyond throughout the entire semester. Homework assignments are EXTREMELY long and tough, and exams are quite difficult with very low averages. Study and get a tutor it definitely helps. Take advantage of the cheat sheet!
His lecture are great. However, he is the toughest test giver in the whole gen chem department. The curve is a lifesaver though.
The exams are like a foreign language. Very different from what you cover in class, the class averages on each exam were around 50%. Huge curve at the end of the class was helpful to final grade. His lectures are interesting, but not helpful for exams. Choose another professor who goes over problems in class if possible--he was my only option.
Extremely passionate about chemistry. Good sense of humor and is very good at teaching. Beware of the tests, however, as they are hard.
Dr. Appy really knows chemistry and he is very passionate about it. Very friendly, funny, and his lectures are interesting. He tried to do a demonstration every week. His tests are fairly difficult though, so study up. Visiting office hours helps a ton and when talking one on one with him, he is super nice
Nice teacher overall. The classes are confusing and would not recommend taking an early morning class with him! Definitely read through the textbook. The tests are really hard and didn't always follow what was discussed in class. Truthfully, the majority of the class was below a C. I would look into other options prior to choosing him.
Unless you have a very strong background in Chemistry, I would highly recommend taking the class with someone else. He seems like he is a great professor in lecture because he explains things thoroughly and the examples seems easy. However, the tests are extremely difficult. Don't expect averages above a 50% and not that much of a curve to save you
very good professor. helps to have a background in chemistry. he also puts video lectures online for if you have to miss class. really knows what he's talking about and makes jokes a lot which is entertaining. tests tend to be more conceptual so make sure to study that and know the math as well
He is a very good professor. Tests are difficult if you dont go to class. GO TO CLASS he makes lectures interesting and funny. Puts lectures online. Students like him. Grading is sometimes unclear. Notes are very important and he writes them with you so you to make sure you get it all down. He makes the subject interesting by his clarity & detail
He puts past exams up with keys as practice for your exam but they are never even remotely the same material. The homework and its usually around 50 problems and it takes hours/days, and half the time you type in the correct answer and it says its wrong, and its only worth ten points of each chapter. Puts lectures online so attendance isnt required
Appears to be a nice guy in lecture but once you take your first test you'll change your mind. The tests are hardly what you learn in lecture so read the book. His multiple choice questions on his tests are impossible and meant to trick you. Unless you have a strong chemistry I really recommend taking it with someone else if you can.
You think you know everything that is going to be on the tests, you do all the practice problems in the book and homework, read the book, go over your notes, go over the past exams that are posted, and then you take the test and it is nothing like what you've learned. Good luck if you have to take it with him.
He seems to be a really nice guy until you take your first test. No matter if you read the text book, do the homework, study for days, go to class every day, you will flunk the tests. He puts the lectures online which is nice, but it really helps if you go to class. He refuses to help you if you ask. Take it with a different professor if you can.
Appy is the worst professor I've ever had... tests are nothing what he talks about in class. Makes the class way harder than it needs to be. Many of the TA's were confused about his questions and expected students to figure it out. TERRIBLE
One of the best professors I've had so far. Hilarious guy who really wants to see you succeed. Lectures are both amusing and helpful. Tests can be tough if you do not study. Contrary to other comments, what he teaches in lecture IS what is on the tests. Read the book if you need extra clarity. Get help if needed. Wish I could have him again.
He really cares about the students. Tough material. Beware of fill in the blanks on tests.
Didn't curve the class. Test averages were very low and final grade average was very low. Take Chem163 with someone besides Appy. I didn't learn anything.
Dr. Appy is a great professor if you've already had some background with chem. I found his lectures to be simple because I took chem in high school and did well. The online homework is finicky but helps comprehension. Tests are graded tough!! You may know your stuff, but little mistakes can get you. Overall, great teacher and would recommend.
Dr. Appy is funny and very nice but his class is difficult. He puts his lectures online so attendance is not necessary but things make more since if you go to class. Tests were tough and I often found myself going into the test confident then reading the questions on the test and having no idea what it was talking about.
Class exam averages were really low but there was still no curve for the class which personally I found completely ridiculous. Expect long homework assignments every week, they are worth a significant amount of your grade and they are not easy. I put a significant amount of work into this class and still got the worst grade of my college career.
Fun lectures but hard exams.
He's a great professor and is very easy going. He knows what he is talking about. He is very down to earth and loves when the class asks questions.
He is a phenomenal teacher! He really cares for each of his students and his lectures are very clear. He also writes all of his notes, which allows you to easily keep up with the pace he is going and keep notes as well. He is extremely helpful during office hours- go to them! His tests are hard, but this class is not supposed to be easy.
Class is interesting with demos and fun facts. I loved the class but the exams are tough. Not much homework and no quizzes either so your grade depends on your exam grades. I love Dr. Appy so much ;)
Great guy, terrible professor, seems great until you get to your first test and none of the material relates to what you just 'learned'. Averages have been 58% on all the tests throughout the entire class with no curve. Reschedule get another teacher
Very tough class. All exam scores ranged in the low 50-60's. Even though I always did well above this average I ended with a C+ in the class. Appy is a very funny guy, but a horrible teacher. Curve should have been way higher with respect to students scores. I recommend any other teacher but him.
Appy seems like a good teacher at the beginning of the semester. When you take your first test, it is nothing like he teaches you. He basically is setting students up for failure with the difficulty of his tests.
Good professor, you just need to study hard like most of college class, then you definitely will do good in this class, good luck to every one
I took this Spring 2015. I appreciated that he made those with computers sit in the back row to minimize distraction. Going to class wasn't mandatory, as lectures were also online, but if you skip, you will NOT get the grade you want. Keep up on homework, attend lecture and pay attention. If you do this, you should be okay. He wants you to learn.
This was his first time teaching Organic chem, and I think he did great. He made the hardest class of my life bearable, and was always willing to help us with homework outside of class. Nice guy.
He hand writes lecture notes, and homework is a lot like exams. Office hours are very relaxed and helped me out a lot.
I could tell he cared a lot about his students. I had him last year and he always showed up to the exam reviews to help us with problems and to let us know what kind of questions to expect. I honestly didn't end up with a good grade in this class but that's because I did not try at all. But he is always happy to help his students!
Professor Appy is an overall good guy and you can tell he genuinely loves teaching and cares about his students. I'm honestly not understanding the material but that's because I'm not trying very hard but it's still my favorite class just because I enjoy learning from Appy so much
Great professor, and very open to help lock in concepts after class. He expects his students to come prepared and put in the effort, be he expects it in a reasonable way (he'll tell you he won't drop his standards to accommodate lack of effort). With that said, he prepares students for success.
Dr. Appy was overall a great professor. However, he is very specific during lecture and you need to pay attention in order to truly understand. Textbook was extremely helpful and 99% of all test or quizzes comes straight from the book. Be prepared to work hard!
Great personality, horrible at teaching. He is not specific with the reactions and does not explain each step thoroughly. He skips ahead a lot. The class mainly depends on exam scores and my class average was about 60-65%. Homework is a ton of work but barely worth any points. My tutor taught better than him.
He's all over the place, pretty hard to follow. Going to class really doesn't matter as long as you make the notes up.
Awkward teaching style. Wishy washy and goes on tangents about things unrelated to Chemistry. Gets things wrong in lecture and emails corrections frequently. Blames poor grades on students and not on his teaching. When most people are in the 30s that probably means something...
Loved him and his teaching style. I found lectures to be engaging and funny. The class is difficult, tests make up most of your grade, and the online homework was awful to use. Go to lectures, ask questions, and opwork hard. Dr. Appy definitely cares, and is always willing to answer questions.
Enjoyed his class, teaching style, and personality. I had this class at 8 am and honestly didn't mind getting up for it. He made class interesting and clear, even if you struggle with chemistry, which I do. If you do the homework and pay attention, you should easily pass (I got an A!).
If you have to take organic chemistry, take it with Appy. He relays the information in a way that makes sense. He is humorous and loves what he does; he cares a lot about his students and how they feel about the class. The homework assignments are on Sapling and are pretty long but they aren't impossible.
Chem160 is a class he's never taught before, and I thought it was excellent. As long as your classmates are willing to engage in discussion, the classes are interesting. The lectures are easy to follow, and he is passionate about the subject. There is no homework so attendance points really count. Tests are average difficulty. 10/10 I recommend it.
Dr. Appy is the man. His lectures contain all the information you will ever need plus he posts them online. He's funny and loves what he does making his lectures enjoyable to go to. Study his practice exams and the real exams will be easy. By far my favorite chem class/teacher.
Dr. Appy has been by far my favorite professor yet. It's hard material but he loves what he does and he cares about his students. He is willing to help you out and he loves students seeing him during office hours. Also, 10/10 funniest man ever. I actually ended up enjoying the class and that's mainly because Appy taught it.
Appy is awesome. I took organic chem with him last summer. I spent 2 hours every single day after class with him going over the homework problems. Though organic chem is really hard, he truly cares about his students and if you put forth effort you'll learn it and do well. Cool professor but kept drawing shapes on the board...
Chem 163 was a SUPER HARD class for me personally. With the ridiculously hard and LONG lab, the whole class is worth 5 credits. If possible, don't take it with another hard class. I got a tutor which was a lifesaver. There is a large curve, but virtually no extra credit. TAs teach lab and recitation. Appy was a fun lecturer, but content was extreme
Dr. Appy was an awesome teacher and he really cares about his students success. He makes learning chemistry and science fun.
Honestly I did not enjoy Appy. I approached him multiple times asking for help and his first solution was to tell me to drop. The homework takes hours and does not prepare you for the tests. Khan Academy was my best friend in this class.
Appy was such a cool guy. He's down to talk about anything and just lets the class head in its own direction discussion-wise. There's one paper but you have all semester to do it and you get a cheat sheet for the tests. Some exam questions get kind of specific, but there's extra credit offered on all of them. We barely even talked about chemistry.
Great professor and seems to really care. I can't say the class was easy, but if you put in the effort, attend SI, do the practice tests, and take time to study and actually understand the material, it's rewarding. Flash cards and SI sessions were what saved me!
I think he had good intentions, the delivery of the course wasn't successful. The class average was extremely low, and his attitude toward the students was at times very disrespectful. If you ask any questions about the exam or grading criteria he gets visibly frustrated, and he gives little assistance to students. Also often goes off on tangents.
Prof Appy means well, but as he says during the beginning of the class... the TA is better at teaching Organic chem than he is. Wouldve rather had the TA teach the class
Dr. Appy really tries to have his students get a good grade in his class. However, if you don't read or participate in class, his teaching technique won't be beneficial for you. To ace this professor, just read, participate, and visit him in office hours. His tests are pretty hard, but with the pop quizzes and extra credit, you will be fine.
The toughest thing about this class is that the exams are not multiple choice. They were all open ended and there are no study guides. He does a bunch of demos that are not on the exam. He will spend more time on discussions than teaching material. You must make sure you understand the material well and might have to teach yourself some of it.
Dr. Appy is a nice professor but his exams are very difficult. Although they are curved it is still difficult to get a good grade. It is important to go to the lectures but sometimes he gets off topic in discussion and shows things that don't relate to the material on the exam. Also, there are chapter worksheets.
Professor Appy is a fantastic professor. Although the class has a bad rep for being difficult, he really spends all semester telling you exactly what you need to do/know to do well and if you follow his advice you will do great. He seems passionate about teaching and his lectures are always enjoyable.
My experience with Appy was horrible. He is fantastic at chemistry and is very smart. However, he is incredibly rude to students and sends consistent passive/aggressive emails. He is not very approachable and the material is incredibly hard. Lecture isn't mandatory but if you want to pass, go. Get a TUTOR FOR THE CLASS. They will save you.
Very difficult. The only 3 other people I know in the class also have to retake it. Only graded materials are exams& 3 point homework assignments, & exams are extremely difficult& nothing like practice tests. He told us he had to reread the book to understand& recommended we do the same to pass which with classes and a job no student has time for.
Class average for test was 40% very difficult no matter how much you prepare. lectures are unorganized as he just handwrites notes on a pad of paper, no slides or anything.
This man is the most unprofessional professor I've ever had. Says he's "disappointed" in us after the class average in his completely-random-content-filled exams is below an F, and says he "needs a drink" after grading our work. Nice to know what Appy is doing in his free-time cause it sure isn't anything helpful.
Appy's tests contain relevant information as long as you pay attention and read the textbook. He offers extra credit, and is really understanding. Provides students with 3 HW and 3 quiz drops. First professor I have had that cares about the well-being of his students. As long as you do your work, it isn't unreasonable to get an A/B.
Easily one of the worst professors Ive had. There were extremely low exam averages throughout the semesters, which were then followed by rude and condescending emails sent to the students. He berated students in emails for not understanding a tough concept- a simple reflection of his ability to teach the class.
Appy is something... However, that is not to say that he is a bad professor. Appy will test you on everything, exposing the weaknesses that you thought you could hide. While Appy's tests are notoriously difficult, they are not impossible by any means. If you want to succeed, read, attend the lecture, and REVIEW HOMEWORK! He curves heavy as well.
The tests are nothing like what he goes over in lecture, so he is setting students up for failure. If you want to do well, memorize the text book. The averages for the tests were around 50% each time. He has also made multiple announcements on canvas that he is disappointed in the grades that students have achieved.
Everyone putting down Dr. Appy and I LOVED HIM. He made class super interesting and I was engaged when learning. Go to class because he doesn't post lectures after. Take good notes and READ THE TEXTBOOK. Also make sure to really focus and challenge yourself on the homework. He uses HW and text for exams; focus on application- he makes you think!!!
Lectures are everywhere &dont follow how it goes in the book, he goes on tangents for 20 minutes and proceeds to tell us that its not important. The tests are worded difficultly & dont reflect what we did in class. Notes are not posted online. Hes easy to talk to & funny but sends announcements about how hes disappointed in the tests, can be rude
Definitely the least professional professor I have had my entire time in college, (this is including another one of my professors who uses texting slang in notes and announcements). Passive aggression in his announcements about students not doing better on an 'objectively easier' exam and refuses to consider it was due to his teaching.
Professor Appy may be hard to understand but once you get past his accent he is very knowledgable. He also incorporates some humor. Sometimes he does stumble with explaining things in class but plenty of extra credit. Tests are not very difficult if you do the study guide, final is very hard. Participation is key and do NOT skip lectures!!
His exams are nothing like what is taught in class. Even reading the book doesn't help with him. He didn't provide a study guide for his exam. Highly recommend not having him as a professor. Find another teacher if possible.
His tests are incredibly difficult, but he genuinely cares about the students. If you make an effort to ask questions and get help with what you struggle with, he is very accommodating. By far my fav prof this semester
Dr Appy is the type of guy you want to go have a beer with, not the type of guy you want teaching you Chemistry.
Appy knows his stuff and is a good presenter so you won't get bored. He's accessible to help. Dry sense of humor. I would really have enjoyed him and his class more if I were better at chemistry. His tests are harder than other teachers; questions not always straight forward, some tricky questions . He did curve grades but ever so gently.
Dr. Appy is really funny and seems like a nice person. However, I don't understand his teaching style and I had a hard time grasping the material. He moves at a very fast pace and expects you to read the book before every lecture. The exams are very difficult because he doesn't explicitly cover the material that is on them.
I am flabbergasted by the ridiculousness of this teacher and his class teachings. Not only could he not deliver a lecture without going off on tangents about politics and anything else that had no relation to the topic. But he would also fabricate numbers on very publicized events to fit his own biases and make it part of the "lecture learning".
He does not post notes, study guides, or give any hints as to what to expect on exams, and the exams are worth almost the entire grade. The averages on every exam were below 50%, and he has no problem with that. He doesn't let people know their grades/curve anything until the end of the semester, either. If you can, take someone else!
Dr. Appy is one of the worst Professors I have ever had, this is coming from a senior. I would HIGHLY recommend NEVER taking a class from him. You will fail. His tests and even homework is so hard. The average for all of the exams was below a 50%... The exams are nothing like the worksheets and you will feel unprepared for all of them.
Some professors set up students to succeed, Appy sets students up to fail. Behind a false vail of caring about students, he likes to play "gotcha" with exams and homework questions. Class averages for exams were usually a high F and he saw nothing wrong with that. If that many students are failing a course, maybe it's the professor. Don't take him
I genuinely think this person is a sociopath. Students would tell him that they were crying daily, getting stress migraines, having panic attacks. He does not care and made 0 changes. If you ask questions, he will give snide and condescending answers like, Read the textbook. Absolute demon.
Not a good teacher, homeworks are frequent/long and worth nothing 5 pt. Exams worth at least 100 pts each. He posts past exams but these are worthless because each exam he gives is harder than the previous semesters. Attend his lectures they're not online. Read and memorize the book! He will throw curve balls on the exam and say it was in the book.
If you are mentally ill like I am, Appy is the entertainment you'll need to get me through the day. I genuinely would die for this man. Yes, this class was super hard and I might have to retake it. Homework is 1 assignment and 1 chapter weekly and, but work a low amount of points. Tests are hard, but class is curved so like a 60% is still a C.
The way Dr. Appy runs his class is extremely ineffective unless you are someone who is good at teaching yourself everything from a textbook. He has the audacity to complain about how HE cant sleep before giving out exams, yet he continues to write exams that force half of his class to drop, and half of the remaining students in the class to fail.
Dr. Appy was my first chemistry professor I encountered at ISU after getting my community college degree and I have never met such a horrible person and professor. He ONLY used the textbook for homework, never did examples, and would complain and be so incredibly rude the day after exams because of everyone's score. ISU FIRE HIM.
CHEM 160. Class triggered my mental health, made me strongly question whether college was even for me. Does not post any notes online. Tells you to study past exams when present and past exam questions don't even compare. Makes exams questions tricky and is not multiple choice. No study guides and not a very approachable professor.
The worst professor that I have ever had. I would suggest not taking any class from this professor if at all possible. None of what he talked about in class actually had to do with what was on the tests, which made up about 90% of your grades. I honestly and truly suggest that he stops teaching altogether.
He always gives honest and helpful advice to the students.
This professor was one of the worst I have ever had. He is no longer teaching the course I took with him because so many students failed.
He would not give any feedback pertaining to our exams, he also was not good at explaining things in class. He also claimed that he is teaching us this way because he wants to keep his job. Many people I know failed. Grading is only based off the exams
Grades are mainly based on tests, which he does not prepare you for. They are usually about 5 questions but he makes them difficult and random- studied all night reading 2 chapters and none of what I read was actually on the test. best I could do was 21/50. multiple people failed and all he could say was that the 2 people who did good made his day.
He is likely to be one of the worst professors at Iowa State with very little care for the students. He often said he was figuring out the material as he taught it and was almost zero help when approached. His exams are very random in terms of questions and his response to that is "I want you to answer these as if it's a normal day, not a test day"
Be prepared to take quizzes for material that he doesn't cover until the following day. "Anything in the book is fair game." Even if it's in the next chapter. Legitimately had a quiz over chapter 5 material regarding gas laws when we hadn't started chapter 5 in class yet.
He's the worst professor for beginners in chemistry. The average grade on exams is always less than 50%. Quiz material is always unknown, and the TA only teach it right before the quiz. The lectures don't explain the important problems we need to know, but instead talk about random science stories and difficult problems that are advanced.
Awful
No study tools and extremely hard. Exam average was 47% even though other teachers teaching the same class was high 80s and 90s. Do. Not. Take. This. Class. With. Him.
Provides no resources for student success and has a ridiculously difficult class compared to the same class taught by different professors. Stay Away.
Appy is singlehandedly the worst instructor I've have had in my whole academic career. What is covered in lecture is the bare minimum, so you are essentially paying thousands of dollars in tuition to learn by yourself. The first exam had an average of 47%, to which he replied with, "Scores under 40 --> Chances of passing the course are low."
He wants the entire class to fail! Such a stone hearted person
Bad grading scale
Had to drop the grading scale because the average was 50% on an exam. Other professors had an average of 80%
Refused to discuss grades with students. HW was only worth one point and exams were about 200. Just got off probation and had to be replaced not even halfway into the semester. Class average for the first exam was a 43%. He told me to go to the test center if I had questions and to go to him as a last resort.
He was nice the first few weeks but quickly turned sour. After the first exam average was in the 40s, he became rude and started sending out nasty emails. There were hours worth of HW every week that was only worth 1 point. He left mid-semester and was replaced by a different professor because he had so many complaints. Stay away from David Appy!!!
Gives "practice" for homework that is worth only one point, then refuses to give practice exams / ANY type of resource to prepare for tests. Tests are a different format than all other professors and include info not taught in class.
David Appy is not a professor I would recommend to any student. Our class was not provided with supplemental instruction, no reviewable lecture notes for studying, and no test prep of any kind. Other sessions were allowed a note sheet and was mc while our exam was completely free response. Class avg was 49% and only 8% were graded an 80% or more.
Appy is the representation of stubbing your toe every day after waking up. In all seriousness, his exams are extremely tough and he doesn't cover the material in depth and expects you to memorize a whole textbook and its concepts. While other classes were scoring 80s on the first exam, Appy's class scored 40-50s, and 36% of the course would fail.
Despite what others have said, I actually really liked Dr. Appy. He actually wants you to try in order to succed rather than just handing it to you. After the first exam, my classmates could not handle that and got him removed from our section. He's passionate and funny, you just have to actually put in the work.
