This guy has a great personality! The grading of papers is fair even though it might not be the grade that you would like. He told us not to come to class several times to give us time to work on our papers by ourselves. Very understanding and helpful!

Very interesting discussions and he involved the class.
especially good teaching style. makes students think critically and write well. overall, very interesting!

it was the best, most fun english course i've ever taken.
Helpful, good.
Last week before this class, I intended to take a short nap, it ended up being an hour long nap. I wrote Prof. Arnold a e-mail telling him I sat down for a 5-er which turned into a 50-er, he didn't mind; it was also the day of our exam. He told me to come in to take the test befroe fri... good guy.
one word...ashole
Damn he owns. Coolest English teacher ever.
great fun

Prof. Arnold was an amazing teacher. He really makes his students think and he's extremely nice about every possible situation for missing a class. Recommended for any English class.
I thought he was a really cool prof. laid back doesn't care about much. pretty easy grader and willing to negotiate if you talk to him outside of class. lectures boring as hell
This guy is the most easiest teacher I have had in SP. You better arrange your schedule around just to take him... even though his class is boring as hell.... it's ****ing easy to get an A. All you have to do is all of his easy assignments and thats it!

If you're scheduled for his class on Tuesday, drop it now. I had him last semester and was not at all impressed. For one he has a really bad attitude, just seems high on himself and is really moody, you never know what mood he's going to be in that day and it made me feel really uncomfortable. Easy class but not worth the stress at all.

Very awesome and fun teacher. Makes things very interesting.
My favorite instructor so far...has a unique way of discussing material, funny, flexible, really approachable, really gets into what he teaches. Just rocks in general.
I loved Arnold. I loved writing about literature instead of current events or random topics. No long research papers to write. Just a weekly jounal and a few short papers. His lectures don't always make sense, just lots of words and arrows all over the board, but it won't hurt you if you don't understand. Good guy, take the class.
He's a fun/entertaining teacher
Very fun and enjoyable.
He is a great teacher, I would encourage anyone to take his classes. He gave us short paper assignments with open ended topics, so we could write about whatever interested us. He also let us fix them and turn them in again. He played some of his jam bands music, apparently he plays the bass. Good teacher!
Dave's another genius that UW-SP somehow lured into teaching here. His lectures can be a bit vast, but that's part of the fun. He's hilarious and he offers helpful feedback on your writing.
Awesome teacher...made the class interesting. No big papers just three essays...but they weren't too hard either.
I enjoyed him a lot. He was fun, and his use of text was very interesting. I enjoyed how he taught the class. He is very enthusaistic about English and was very refreshing.
Quite possibly the best class I will take in college. Made lectures very engaging and was very helpful. He's a professor you can talk to about anything and its great. Grades kinda hard, but as long as you have a legit point and argue it in a strong manner, you're golden. He's a giggily **** too.
Definatly my favorite professor. Funny, interesting, good guy. I'll mis this guy and his class.
Arnold is a very funny man. I enjoyed his class very much.
I didn't enjoy this class. Arnold is really smart, but his lectures are narrowly focused, meandering, and obscure. I know most people love him, but he was too hyper, random, and minutia-oriented for me.
Essays were slightly difficult but he is a great teacher and the essays are beneficial for learning experience.
Arnold is a very energetic, funny guy. Being someone who hates English, I was amazed to find that I actually enjoyed his class. He's very focused on war though...and cannibalism...
Tough grader, likes a certain writing style. All novels pertained to historical war, and were usually accompanied by dismal documentaries. Wouldn't take another class of his, although he is a friendly fellow.
This professor is very entertaining; sometimes I wrote down the verbose words he used, only to find they weren't always in the right context. He also misquoted the Bible (not personally offensive but if you're quoting, get it right). Otherwise very helpful with papers and was able to make Faulkner less confusing. I would recommend his classes.
Passionate and very thorough.
Great prof. Makes English really interesting. He's very funny, and he makes the lectures entertaining. If you have to take this class might as well take it with someone who is fun.
This was a GDR for me but I actually enjoyed it. Do the readings and it's a breeze.
This is the second time I've taken Arnold. Pretty sure I'm in love with him. He's extremely interesting and really off the wall. He's a great guy to talk to and as far as grading goes, if you do the reading you'll do fine! :)
Awesome Prof. very enthusiastic about the material. Funny guy. I enjoyed going to class.
fun prof. i hate english and he made english fun! if you have to take this class, might as well take it with someone fun and exciting. he makes the lectures fun and we watched alot of movie clips. be prepared to read short (100-200 pgs.) novels.
Exceptional prof. Inspiring use of language.
I have him right now for English 150 and the class focuses on Shakespeare. I hate reading Shakespeare but he made it fun and interesting. By far one of the best teachers I have had, would recommend him to anyone
Probably my favorite professor in the awesome UWSP English Department. He really knows his stuff and always makes class interesting, fun, and educational.
Professor Arnold is very funny and very intersting to listen to. We read alot of novels in a semester and it was hard to keep track of them all. The only test we had was a final, which was hard to gauge because we hadn't had a test before. But overall, a good class and a good professor.
Great Professor. Would highly recommend.
David Arnold is one of the coolest people I've ever known. If you ever have to miss his class for any reason, you truly feel like you're missing out...and you are. I would highly recommend.
I am a chemistry major who has no interest in the subject of english. That said, take one of Arnold's classes even if you dont have to. He makes the material fun to learn about and classes are truly enjoyable.
He is so funny! WE focused mainly on Howard Hawks and we spent a whole class period talking about wether Cary Grant or Lauren Bacall was sexier. He's realy laid back about everything and only got fired up when I insulted Gary Cooper. RECOMMEND!!!
Arnold is an awesome teacher. This was one of the most amusing classes I have taken. I really don't enjoy English classes but this one was worth it. He makes the class fun.
Doesn't play enough Meat Puppets!
Prof Arnold is an amazing professor! You don't want to miss a class though, because you will be lost, because he covers so much information.... but it's interesting and never boring. If you don't like essays, writing reviews, peer reviews, stay away from this class....it's a lot of writing!!!
AMAZING!!! Engaging, and interesting. I really hated missing the one class I had too, because you really are kinda behind when you miss just one. Very intelligent, but approachable. Loved this class! A lot of writing though, so if you are good at time management than definitely take this class, otherwise you'll be screwed.
One of the best teachers I've had. I was lmfao every class because of his witticisms.
My favorite professor last semester!! Mr. Arnold has a quirky personality that makes his fast-talking lectures fun to listen to. Minimal reading, just for the 4 or 5 stories that you write about. You have to go to the library to watch each of the movies in order to write the essays, which are in-class. No final exam, just hand in your final Essays.
Fun, quirky and assigns an appropriate amount of work, maybe the funnest class I've had at UWSP, definitely the best English prof I've had. Even the short stories that don't seem that great your first time through, he will emphasize in a way that you'll find yourself in love with all of the literature he presents.
This guy is great. This was the one class that I looked forward to going to. He makes the material really interesting and really encourages and allows for students to have their own insights into the readings. What a hoot!
I LOVE him. One of my favorite teachers. He's excited about what he does. A little scatterbrained, has a fondness of writing random words on the board. He's awesome. What other teacher loves the violence of Shakespeare yet reads footnotes for fun! A really awesome teacher, but don't slack off on writing. Not an easy grader, but fair. Take his class
Great teacher! He is excellent at what he does. Often gets off topic but still good discussions. Exceptionally helpful with any questions you may have. Also very amusing. Tough but fair grader.
He spends classtime rambling on about random things week to week that are supposed to help us understand and think about the 2 pieces of literature we read. He has a good sense of humor and is interesting to listen to, but his lectures do very little to help you in the class. You write to in-class essays which you perfect as your final.
Prof. Arnold is a pretty cool dude. He gets really excited about the material, which keeps it interesting. He's always willing to let the class discussion veer off in new directions and actually puts stock in what the students contribute.
Dr. Arnold is awesome. I had him for freshman English, and was excited that I was able to take him again my junior year. He loves to talk and explore abstract ideas in literature, and his lecturing format (talking wildly and scribbling all over the chalkboard) makes class entertaining. If you need help, he's there for one-on-one so use it!
He is fantastic and an easy "A" for a hard science major who can take notes while the prof is speaking. Contrary to other people on this site, he does not ramble off topic; the topic/scope/purpose of practically every weird thing he says can be used for a body paragraph in his essay prompts.
Keep up with the reading because it makes lectures more understandable
He could be more helpful on review of a paper. I waited over a week to get his critique on an essay. By the time he critiqued it, I only had 2 days to revise. If this was my only class with homework it wouldn't be a big deal.
Was a good online teacher. Was very clear in his instructions and I would definitely sign up for his classes again.
I feel a bit torn about this professor. At times, he's insightful, intelligent, and has a great sense if humor. Other times, his explanations are confusing, and emails are left unanswered with questions crucial to the papers. (Online class) There were times when his insight was helpful, and there were times felt he was belittling. Give it a try.
Very vague in the syllabus when it comes to the papers but he is always very good about answering your questions when you email or go and talk to him.
Dr. Arnold is a great professor! I had him to English 101 and he was very helpful if I had questions. The class was 100% online, but he was accessible during his office hours and eager to help in any way possible.
Professor David Arnold is one of the best professors I have ever had. He discusses the most complicated literature in a humorous way that makes his lectures fly by. He consistently reminds students to contact him for help if needed and it is clear what he expects from students. Request him, you won't regret it!
Lots of lecturing but definitely very helpful in understanding the books assigned. Don't bother purchasing Rules for Writers because you won't need it for anything important. He's very energetic and sometimes goes off on tangents but you still get what you need to done and you can tell he is very passionate about what he does.
He's the type of professor I hope to be someday. He keeps you engaged and is really funny too. Very open to questions and pushes meeting outside of class for extra help.
Arnold is very entertaining, but you will have to read about 10 hours a week.
Arnold is a fun teacher and I always looked forward to going to class! He likes joking around and often gets off topic, but regardless he is a good teacher. ENG 202 requires A LOT of reading, and personally I thought some of the books were not that interesting to read. Also, he doesn't do D2L so you won't know your grade unless you ask him.
I love Professor Arnold and am so glad I took his class! It's obvious he's passionate about his work and he gets super excited if your show genuine interest in English. He also makes it super easy to reach out to him for help outside of class for help too.
Eng 150 with Arnold was my favorite class of the semester. He is interesting, fun to listen to, and makes class engaging. You write three papers in class, then revise them and hand in at the end of the year. Would recommend doing the reading and making a revision appointment with him. Fun semester, would take again!
Dr. Arnold is an amazing professor. He is clear about your assignments, there is a lot of graded material which is great for getting your grade up if needed, and he is never boring. He is very passionate about what he does and it shows. I definitely recommend him as a professor.
You actually have to read not just the novels but also the textbook that you have to purchase, not just rent. Takes a while to hear feedback, but it is good feedback. He also doesn't set due dates in Canvas, so if you rely on the calendar like I did, good luck remembering assignments.
This guy was a fun prof and is super passionate about English. He's also flexible and understanding about late work and due dates if you just talk to him! He let me extend my final exam essays to the latest possible day and he worked just as hard to give me quick feedback on everything. Just was an unexpectedly considerate professor, would rec!
Great guy. Class is boring, but he's hilarious. He will never give you 100% ("it's a work of God"). 2 midterms and 1 final. You're well prepared for them though. You do a presentation in a group, but it's simple. A lot of reading and writing.
One of my favorite classes from this semester, and I am not a fan of English. He's very passionate about what he does and made class fun to go to. The work is easy if you stay on top of everything, and he gives feedback with every assignment. So glad I took this class.
I've never really been a fan of English but he made the class easy and fun. All you have to do is write a weekly journal for most weeks and three in class papers that you revise outside of the class and turn back in again at the end of the semester. You read three books too. I'd recommend taking his class to anyone.
10 journals throughout the semester, he makes it very hard to get 100% on those. Being someone who doesn't excel in English, this class was very difficult to me
Had him for ENGL 150 and thought he was a great professor so I took his ENGL 200, too. Pretty interesting lectures and readings. Returns homework quickly but does not put grades in Canvas until the end, or later.
Makes lectures interesting and there is a lot of reading outside of class. Does weekly journals about the reading but they don't have to be very long (usually a page or two) and the grading is understandable. There are three big papers based off three different books so annotate your text and if you need help go to his office hours.
One of my favorite lectures to go through! He is such a funny guy and makes everything entertaining regardless of material. I never really knew what to expect for the exams but he did a nice job reviewing before hand. Would definitely take another class with him!
Dave knew how to make class fun, he was funny and made class as non boring as possible. Going to class is very important as what is discussed in class will all be on the exams. He can be a tough grader but if you study and know the content you will be fine.
I didn't enjoy this class at first, as his sense of humor is best appreciated once you have heard it for a while (sarcastic and makes weird references to things). He always gives 90% for completion of journals and it can be difficult to receive anything higher, so one missing grade in the book can be the difference between an A and a B.
Communicative, understanding, funny, and an overall great professor. He would explain things really well, leave great feedback, and actually make you feel important in the class.
We had to read three books and we had a writing assignment that was about the book every week. You have to write an essay in class about each of the books and the final was to revise all three papers. I recommend not skipping class because the lectures help with the essays and there is multiple group work activities that are graded.
Very understanding, as long as you turn in assignments, it is impossible to get lower than a B-
Dr. Arnold is a character in the best way possible (will occasionally go on etymology tangents). We only read one book this semester, Henry V, and he made it supper approachable. As long as you do the assignments, you'll be fine.
A lot of reading and writing but grading criteria is clear and fair
David Arnold is fantastic. He is hilarious and made lectures enjoyable to be at. Sometimes the work can seem like a lot but he makes his grading clear and is always willing to help out if you need it
Very good professor. Enjoyed learning from him.
Very kind and understanding, he provides you with lots of feedback to better your writing. There is a journal almost every week and three essays. Class can get repetitive at times but it is all info that you need to know!
Uhm... literally what is going on sometimes? He is so passionate that he rambles on a lot, so it might be difficult to understand him. I do love his passion though! His tests are very strange because it's hard to know what exactly he wants us to study. But I do recommend him for very passionate literature students. Again, LITERATURE students.
Dave is a very passionate professor, however, he likes to go on tangents, talks too fast, and doesn't prepare you for what will be on exams. Do not miss a class or else you will be beyond lost if you don't get notes from classmates or go in for office hours. He will help if asked.
Super tough grader, ontop of the million papers and readings he makes you do. Worst English professor ever normally an A student but it was impossible to balance his class and others so do not recommend him what so ever
Most of his beginning lectures were fine, but get ready to spend about 3-4 weeks on Hamlet. It feels like he's just fangirling over the works the whole time, especially during drama and poetry. Doesn't really engage the students either so the lectures get pretty boring. But he is a silly little man. fairly easy class though.
Great person overall, terrible teacher. Good luck getting anything above a 27 on ur journals (weekly journals). Actually good luck getting a 100% on anything, he finds nothing perfect, always has something to criticize. His lectures are all over the place, starts tangents about the most random things. There is really no point of going to class...
You can tell Dr. Arnold is passionate about the material but lectures were scattered. Majority of the class was spent on King Henry IV (Shakespeare). There were weekly journal entries and longhand drafts (writing an essay in class). We were able to use a notes sheet for the longhand draft. The grading was sometimes confusing.
Very lecture heavy, lectures are very random. Do not often relate to content. Gets ahead of himself way too quickly. Lots of reading. Overall nice person, but teaching wise, needs to realize times have changed. Would never take his class again, it genuinely sucks.
Big yapper. "I just want to say a few words before-" about a topic translates to "I'm going to yap about this topic for the next 45 minutes." Very funny guy but frequently rambles and goes off topic. He is very clearly passionate about what he does however.
This professor can be a funny guy, and he's passionate about what he's teaching, but the class is not very interactive. He lectures for an hour and 15 minutes and often rambles. He often goes off task. He acts as though everyone is an English major and knows what he's talking about. Take good notes and pay attention since there's quizzes/exams.
