This class will cost you the most money, stress, and grief. Do what you have to so you can avoid him!!
Avoid him at all costs. He moves at racehorse speed without detailed explanations.Tons of work assigned and really tough grader.Makes you feel stupid if you try to ask a question too.Stay away.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had...I made an appointment with him for help and he didnt even show up--TWICE. THen when it came time to turn the assignment in, he said I had to turn it in half done and I got an F on a huge project. He doesnt care
I was surprised to see Auslum rated so low on here. The class is a bit challenging and he's probably not the best when it comes to individual help, but he is a very good professor and very knowledgeable in Economics. I enjoyed both classes.
He is knowledable, and his tests aren't that hard...but he gives a lot of stupid assignments out and is a picky grader. He does not deal well with helping people...when asked to explain something that is unclear he will simply repeat himself.
Knowledgable yes, but I too well agree that he is picky, assigns busy work, and horrible at explaining in different ways. Not easy to approach and overall extremely bummed about my experiences with him. Advice-stay away!
The best instructor I have ever had. Lame questions receive lame responses. The students who did not read the book and cant understand the classes are the ones who left responses. I recommend this class to everyone.
The worst teacher I have ever had. Very bias, he either likes you or he doesn't, and shows it on your grade. I worked in a study group for my homework and all of us recived different grades for identical work. Does not know how to lecture and when he would, he would give out wrong info.

Excellent Professor, Highly Recommended
DO not take AUSLAM.. he is a good teacher and knows his stuff but the class is extremely hard. there are 6 difficult tests, homework and two Wall street journal assignments. You have to keep the WSJ for the whole semester and its a pain in the butt. I would recommend another teacher suchas MOBINI
Prof. Auslam is a great lecturer. Students must read and LISTEN in order to grasp the concepts. Most learning is in doing workbook assignments. Mr. Auslam believes in his students and knows they will do well, just do your part and study! He is helpful during his office hours, just visit!
Aulum is a GREAT TEACHER! If you have a question he will always clarify it. He goes over all the tests, and the tests aren't to hard...just do what your supposed to do and study!! The WSJ assignments taught me soooo much, they take a long time to do but the knowlegde gained is worth it. He does a
Excellent teacher, knows his stuff. However you must read the text and attend all lectures to ace the tests
Brilliant man and excellent professor. He is challenging, but that is how students learn. He really knows his stuff and does a good job of making the class interesting. If you want to learn, you'll grow tremendously with his class.
Efficient
Unless you have a knack for Economics, Auslam is not a good choice.
Environmental majors should take this class. Instructor has an understanding of costs associated with pollution and side effects.

overall a very boring and tedious class. i had trouble staying awake throught the class period. he sometimes doesn't lecture on everything on the test and he kind of jumps around. he helps you if you ask, overall he is an okay teacher. but the class just sucks
Prof. Auslum makes you work a lot, but I learned A LOT about Economics. He uses a grading system where every grade has a span of 15% instead of 10%, so it is pretty easy to earn a decent grade in the class. If you are serious about business or econ, this is a good class to take.
Had him for tv class. Terrible about posting assignments on distance learning sight and forget about finding out what you got on a test, his turn around time is about 6 weeks, snails have a faster grading period. And dont think of asking him ques. over email, he usually has an attitude. dont take!
Auslam is a brilliant man and definitely knows his stuff. However, I don't know if he is cut out for teaching. When asked a question, he tells students to think about it and they'll get it, though he never actually explained anything. He sometimes has attitude when asked q's. There is a lot of hw in this class, but otherwise is an easy A.
Auslam is the worst professor I have ever encountered. He remainsinsolent, has no regard for students, takes pleasure in creatingfrustration, avoids answering questions, horrible at lecturing, and isotherwise a sarcastic cynical obtuse pseudo intellectual who would bebetter suited teaching a class of zombies. Heed my advise: find anotherprof.
Great teacher! He is there to help you, but you must put in the effort to learn. Don't take his class if your not interested in the subject. I learned a lot from him! He's a great guy as well!
Mr. Auslam is an awful teacher, the first day in class I thought I lost a part of me. It's still so hard to believe that half way through the semester I had to 'W' the class. I couldnt take it anymore I highly suggest if you are really interested in the world of economics, this is the class for you. Not unless you are doing all the GE, U R SCREWED!
i thought that overall mr.auslam was really a good teacher.the class is boring but that is just because of the subject.i am sure that he could spice things up a little but if you learn the material that is all he cares about.the homework load is gruesom but as long as you do the homework you should do fine on the tests!!!
seems to have difficulty teaching the class exactly what they need to know, constantly assumes everyone understands his knowledge. gives attitude sometimes to students asking questions or help. hard time with this teacher and dropped out little past a week, i highly suggest anyone NOT to take him as econ teacher but mr farhangi or mr masri instead!

Tough class, if you pay attention and take good notes you'll do ok.
totally borring class, hard teacher, if you aren't a econ. major, don't bother!!!
he is like an economics nazi, i have never worked so hard to just squeek by with a B. i understood the material and did well on the tests but he assigns an amazing amount of BS busy work. would not take him again.
Hes a good teacher. He is very clear on what he wants and gets the info to you out straight. If you just do what he says and SHOW YOUR WORK!!!!! you will get an A.
He's tough, but he gives you what you can expect to have at Universities, he gives a lot of work and the tests are tough, but he's a good teacher.
Great teacher just have to show up to class and be willing to learn, he explains things very well and makes his assignments very clear
The class isn't the easiest class, but it's econ what do you expect. I think that he is a good teacher because as long as you do the work you'll get an A.
Interesting subject, but just a bad professor, I cannot recommend him. This class is VERY difficult, students are subjected to very difficult exams regardless of how much time has been spent on the topic. Test dates are crammed, often every other week there is a 100 point test with only 3 periods of lecture, leaving students to teach themselves.
Auslam is a tough teacher, and sometimes his lectures can be difficult to follow but overall he does a great job considering the content he has to teach. He's also one of the coolest teachers at Sierra if you get to know him - dont listen to the morons saying he's some sort of grumpy curmudgeon, they need to learn how to act mature in a classroom.
He was a really good teacher. He made econ as interesting as it could possibly be.
Well his tests (at leat the first) came way too early, midterm in the third week? on quiz 1,i missed a few, when i asked the correct answer so i can avoid that error in the future, i was insulted, telling me that i should know that and he shouldn't have to tell me. But how was i to know that i had to show the formula for slope on every problem?
Excellent teacher, the best Econ teacher at sierra
Great teacher. Just make sure you attend his lectures and do the homework. I took both his classes and was also his TA one semester. I strongly recommend him.
He is a very good teacher, and believe me, he KNOWS the subject inside out....very very clear, if you are majoring in economics, he IS the guy, the tests are easy, all MCQs. He makes jokes only on coffee, and not very funny too..he is a serius guy mostly and even gets a bit angry during classes if you dont do your work or ask stupid questions...
Not very clear on lectures, this class is more about self discipline educating yourself. I expected a well worth traditional lecture teacher but instead half baked. He just says the name of topics but you have to teach yourself the definitions and practice workbooks. Not hands on teacher, but he knows this stuff BUT doesn't communicate effectively!
I took him for 1B and 1A. Definitely recommend him. If you do the work and pay attention, you'll get an A. Also, he does have a sense of humor.
Auslum expects alot and his class is hard, but if you do the work you'll learn alot. He gives alot of assignments and tests and grades hard, but overall he's a pretty nice guy. Take good notes, do the reading, and study for the exams, which come every two chapters.
This class was actually...kinda fun. I took it in the LRC, and the atmosphere was great. This class covers a lot, but if you stay on top of it and study, along with his instruction, its very passable. He really made me enjoy Economics. I would recommend him. I had a great time learning, and Auslum made it easy and interesting!
great professor! learn a lot from his class though it's kinda tough...as long as u pay attention in class & turn in homework, u'll do fine~ highly recommended for econ & busi major studends!!
if you believe that you are taking this class to learn seomthing from this professors, you are terribly wrong! He is not always clear in his lectures, and as a matter of fact, he doesn't lecture! He briefs through a 20 page chapter in 15 minutes!! And those who are taking to only earn a grade, please take it somebody else!! Worst professors!
Professor has a clear subject knowledge, there is absolutely no doubt about that. Loved his class, highly recommended for Econ, business and math majors. Assignments are little tough, but hey, go to his class if you want to learn something, not if you just want to pass it! AWESOME TEACHER!!! tip-show your work.
As a former TA for Auslam, I can tell you that he is a great guy with the best of intentions. He makes the course challenging because he knows that is the only way to get students to work. Overall, lectures are fairly clear if you keep up with the material, and you'll learn a lot. I decided to major in Econ after taking his class.
Easy to get in touch with. Do what he tells you to do and you WILL get an A.
Auslam is hard, yes, but you learn a ton. He is there to teach, not babysit. He demands college level work to pass his class. He is sarcastic if you ask a stupid question or if you are just taking up a seat and not paying attention or doing the work.
Auslam is a very good teacher. He knows his subject very well. You have to work hard and smart for the grade, he isn't the type of teacher that would want you to memorize and regurgitate the information on the day of the exam. Understanding is the key to doing well in his class. Please go to his office hours if you are unsure of anything! :)
Very clear on assignments. If you put the effort in and do what he tells you it is an easy A. 85% and above is an A. If you are lazy and don't study, you will struggle. The lessons build on one another so make sure you understand the chapters before it is time to move on. Not a lot of homework. He only assigns the problems with the most benefit.
This teacher is boring and is pretty mean. Definitely do not be late to class/or miss. The poor guys he chewed out (about 3) never came back. I found out he's actually a pastor at a church...you'd never know it from his actions. Opt for a different teacher if possible.
Pretty hard class. READ THE BOOK and you will be ok. He doesn't like guys much and can sometimes make you feel dumb. If you're a cute girl you're good to go. Just show up, do the work and don't speak up.
Very passionate about the subject. He grades ridiculously hard and can make you feel pretty stupid but he means well. Will give you help if you ask for it. The book is great and his projects really help you learn the material. Tests are big but not too hard, so study and you will do well
He really helped me to understand the concepts and applied it to things you will use in everyday life. If you kept in contact with him he was very willing to work with you around any conflicts that may come up.
Learn a bunch! Very very hard tests. Will pick one topic and just drill into it extensivley. If you know it youll ace it but you have to know it inside outside upside and downside because hell throw it at you from every imagineable angle. Nice guy though, but that doesnt help your grade ha!
Prof. Auslam is the best in the WORLD!!! He makes Econ so fun and interesting. I switched my major to Econ because of him. He gives assignments from the Wall Street Journals and his tests are all multiple choice. It doesnt get better than this
Professor Auslam graduated from UC Davis with a 4.0. He proceeded to do his Graduate degree from Rutgers University. He then was an economic consultant for many years...And he expects you to also. Very Very Very difficult class. You learn a lot. Nice guy but Very condesending when you ask for help. Cant understand why people dont understand it all
The guy is a jerk! I just got back my final grade I was four points away from an A in the course of almost 1,200 points and he still gave me the B. He said I would be fine because he would include participation points but he decided not to do that because he didnt have time. I never missed a class, or late, went into his office hours quite often!
I loved Mr.Auslam's class! He renewed my interest in econ, he loves his subject and wants to see students do well. Econ 1A consisted of multiple choice tests that were rather easy, 2 written assignments on Wall Street Journal articles, and a trip to the federal reserve. Easy class, but one learns a lot. He grades 85% and above as A. Take him!
Excellent Teacher! Ive had him for 1A and I am just about to finish 1B with him. He is obviously an extremely intelligent person and he knows his subject better than anyone. All work comes from the book. No homework is assigned unless he really thinks it will help. If you study you will get a great grade. Really nice guy.
The grumblings you read in the other reviews are likely from students who didn't keep up with the coursework. Dave is a very good instructor, but its up to you to keep up with the pace of the class and course material. I highly recommend Dave if you're ready to do your work, but not if you just want a 1A class to slip by in.
I do not like this man. He doesnt like young people and yells at me almost every day for asking questions. He knows economics but is quick to talk down to students. Tests are hard and he grades the coursebooks in a ridiculous way...
Auslam is a great and by the way, this is college, sometimes you actually have to work. Anyone who doesn't like Auslam is just unwilling to put out any effort, seriously the tests are all multiple choice it doesn't get any easier than that. take auslam, if you are interested in learning,
Had no interest in economics at all before taking this class and after taking it with prof. auslam I have seriously considered switching majors. He is very knowledgeable in this subject and explains the material very well. I agree with the other postings, the class is not easy but you can easily pass if you just show up and do the work!
good teacher, read the textbook and do the coursebook and study 3 hours before the test, spaced out or not whenever and you should definently pass. he lets an 85 percent be an A so he is a deffinent possibilty for an A. if your not a dumbass, or really lazy take him and you will get atleast a B.
DON'T DO IT!!! He is very rude! He made fun of me in front of the entire class for asking a question about something the HE messed up on! All he does is stand in the front and talk, no notes so it's very hard to remember everything for the tests. Find another teacher, he is TERRIBLE!
I took his online class. A few tests and three easy economics papers. It was an easy workload and well structured. However, the class was expensive! He uses Aplia which is a rip off. I never used it except to read the textbook.
He is a good teacher. Old dude. Take notes in class, and read at home. Know how to calculate and work out the problems he gives. HIGHLIGHT YOUR BOOK. it really helped me in this class. And meet with others for the WALL STREET JOURNALS. DONT PROCRAStinate wall street journals. and just get the wall street journal assignments offline
Would not recommend taking this class online! He doesn't provide any lecture notes and doesn't require DB. He expects students to understand the material without him teaching it. The homework is easy, but the test are very difficult.
I am taking his online class and I don't understand how he is not flexible with testing schedules. I am taking this online class for a reason, to accommodate my life so why do I only have one day to take the exam- and he will not let you take the exam early, you will be docked for taking it late. Also, alplia is 90 bucks, not an expense I wanted.
Took the online class-apila is $90, need to subscribe to Wall Street Journal (student option is discounted but still expensive). Quiz every week (1 day to do), docked pts if not taken on time. A few tests (I wanna say 3), and wsj assignments (which are mainly summaries of articles and relating them to the current topic).
I took this class online and I DO NOT recommend it at all. He doesn't give any lecture notes at all, just expects us to teach ourselves from the book. So you basically pay tuition to be your own teacher. Tests are hard. He only gives you 24 hours to take them and you have 50 minutes to finish your test. Book is way to expensive. DO NOT take online
I took Prof. Auslam's class online. Yes he is tough, Yes the tests are challenging but I wanted to learn Economics and with Prof. A I did. When I did not understand a point he didn't just hand me the answer but helped me learn how to find it. I am an 'older' student and take my education seriously. I am signed up for his 1B class next month.
Hated this class, gives us one day to take tests. Not clear at all. No lecture notes, horrible at responding to emails. Most expensive class ive ever taken, makes you subscribe to the wallstreet journal when the articles are online. Take someone else, my last teacher could barely speak english and i learned more from him. Honestly.
Second language students do not take this class online!!! His tests created for native speakers. The questions are VERY HARD to understand. I'm an honor student and only got a "C" - it's my first one for the entire 3 years being in college.
This is tough class if you have little to no interest and the format of this particular online class made it even more difficult. Your questions do not get answered in away that helps. It's like this prof is TOO hands off. He doesn't teach, he just moderates you teach yourself. Not a good class at all!
Took online. Only graded on tests and Wall Street journal assignments. Do all the reading, all practice problems online, and get true false answers in back of course book and study. U do this u will pass. Wall Street journal assignments are confusing but he grades very easy on it. Put something down that makes sense and probably get an A on it.
his interest is not in teaching. It's in being difficult. Tests are mis-labled; assignments not clear..if it was not for other students, you're clueless as what to do. I believe he does not like the age group he teaches. Not sure what this guy cares about as it certainly is not teaching. A Jerk! You will not learn in his class. a lot of drops too.
I finally feel like I took a course that prepared me for upper division work! Prof. A is a professional economist who has worked in the industry so he knows econ from a practical level as well as theoretically. I learned so much. It was challenging but I feel well prepared for university classes. If you want to learn econ, take this class!
I took this class as a filler and I am a 3.8 student will graduate with my first C ever. For an intro class it is horrible. I would characterize him as disinterested in teaching, non-respondent, technologically challenged, and for lack of better word sucks. He has weekly quizzes that can only be taken on one day, rarely responds to questions.
I think most of the bad reviews are due to this being an online course and the assignments could be very confusing. Yes, it's a lot of work, especially the WSJ reviews, but they weren't difficult and Professor Auslam was great about answering questions and giving feedback in a timely manner. He also offers extra credit for participation.
This class was very difficult for me. I did earn a B, but I worked very hard for that B. He gives great feedback and offers extra credit every week. I would take him again, but not online. Get ready for a lot of work & truly understand the material!
I took this class online. Had to pay for aplia online, and WSJ student subscription. This class was a lot of work, but I actually learned a lot. This class is what a college course is supposed to be like. Don't take it looking for an easy A. Do the work, make sure you understand the material, and you will do fine.
