Great Prof., Conveys material great, tests moderate, quizzes easy, I suggest +++
AUSTIN is GREAT, he uses a lot of visuals and is always avail. out of class
Gives credit for trying. He's a great teacher.
Wonderful professor! Knows the info and explains so you can understand.
One of the best professors at the University!! Definatly take him.
Excellent step by step teaching! The most friendly guy I've ever had! Show up.
I'm not a big fan of math, but he made everything understandable. Take him!!
makes everything so simple that you can't not understand, great guy
very good, reviews a bit at beginningof class previous material, laid back
Great teacher. Funny as hell.
Made something hard easy to understand,VERY good teacher
D. Austin is the man! One of GVSU's best
Great teacher - highly recommended
A very good teacher. The tests lean towards the conceptual side.
Good guy but didn't seem to tie things together very well
Made even the hardest material clear. FAIR grader
If I had had him the first time, I wouldn't have had to re-take the class.
great teacher. makes the class really easy. always willing to help.
one of the best, very lenient, do the homework! ask questions!
great guy. very intelligent. LACKING in teching skill, however - very unclear.
Not very helpful to struggling students.
hard to stay awake. reminds me of ben stein.
awesome teacher. Makes hard material easy to understand. Doesn't overload you with work.
good notes, but not enough practice during class, lots of material on exams.
Austin is the best prof. in the math department. I work my schedule around his to make sure I get him for as many classes as possible. A must get for all math majors!!!
He made things clear during lecture, but not enough practice during class. Lectures were definately dry.
Was not helpful at all. Would not work with students who did not understand his "helpful illustrations".
Excellent Prof., very easy to listen to.
Geat guy and very good teacher. He was very helpful and easy to talk to. I really enjoyed taking his class. I also had MTH 341 with him.
This professor is really good, and helpful, best math prof so far
way too much homework. Everytime you turn in an assignment, there are like 2 more new ones waiting for you. Gets annoying because there is no time throughout the semester when you arent doing some sort of homework.
Probably the best professor in the math department. Very helpful. Exams can be hard and tricky though. Lots of homework and labs. You will always be doing something for the class. If you want to learn though, take him!
Great guy, very clear and willing to help. Problems were challenging but not too tough.
I'm usually really good at math. I took 3 math classes in college before his class. He started on chapter 2 and didn't explain anything. He hands out worksheets and expects you to learn that way. Goes way to fast and doesn't really expalin anything.
This professor speaks straight from the mathematical archives. Highly recommended.
He's a nice guy, and you can tell he just wants his students to do well. He's very willing to help you if you just ask. The exams are really tough, and so are the portfolios. I'd reccommend taking him if you already took Calc in high school, but otherwise get someone who moves a little slower.
Nice guy, tough class. But I think calculus is hard no matter who you have.
The course is designed to challenge you & make you think, & it does. He is very willing to help if you don't understand; however, be prepared to ask direct questions (especially on review days), as he does not volunteer information not on his lesson plan. The tests are tough, but relatively fair.
this professor, while extremely intelligent, comes off as remote, distant and, unless you are smart as well, not very patient or accepting. however, he is hot.
In order to take this professor, you will have needed to already taken calc. before. The tests are very hard as well as the labs. The material is hard enough already and he thinks that you are a professional on the material and gives you problems that would take you 10 days to figure out. The portfolios are also very hard as well. Take if alrea
Best math teacher I have ever had. It may be a little hard if you didn't talke calc in hs, but then, you probably shouldn't be taking any college calc class, unless you have some experience in it. He is very nice, very funny, always willing to help. I always look to see if he is teaching any of the math classes I have to take.
Very helpful and makes calculus easy to understand. Some may say he's hard, but just remember this is college calculus and you only get out of it what you put into it.
Dr. Austin was a fun professor. He made lame jokes which were funny because they were so lame but still funny. I'm sure everyone would have gotten more out of the class had we not had a very stupid women slowing each class down. He is very helpful in office hours and his projects arn't too difficult.
Calculus is always going to be difficult no matter who you have. Dr. Austin was very helpful and very clear on what he expects of you. If you go in to his office during his hours he will help you a lot. Great Professor.
Calc 2 isn't an easy subject, but Austin makes it very approachable. His lectures are very clear and easy to follow, he doesn't go at a fast pace, and he's very helpful. He will teach you the material, but you still need to put fourth the effort. I definitely recommend him for 201 or 202.
Austin is a clear professor but it is a challenging subject. I had a very difficult time with the course but he is very nice and willing to help. Very knowledgable about the subject because he teaches from memory.
Booyah Prof. Made the material as easy as it could be. Take this professor for sure. Class was usually interesting or at least somewhat entertainning with his great sense of humor. I would suggest Prof. Austin to anyone.
Prof. Austin makes calculus 2 as easy to understand as possible. He uses clear, interesting, and relevant examples to illustrate topics. His sense of humour is unique and enjoyable; expect more than a few laughs in his class. Very helpful during office hours. Answers email very quickly. Would recommend.
Calc is a very challenging subject, but prof. Austin teaches it well. He makes his classes interesting with his sense of humor. Homework load is not that bad and he grades fairly. Would definitely take him again!
He's a great professor! Calc 2 would have been a lot harder if I didn't have him as a prof. He explains everything very well, and his handouts really help you to understand the material.
The best prof ever. I loved his teaching style and humor. Tests were fair and class was fun. I really didn't want to miss any of his class. Therefore, i also sign up for his MTH 227 in the winter 09. Just try his class and you will believe me.
Nice & very genuine. HOWEVER, he is not very clear when teaching the material. He makes everything seem simple in class but makes exam problems much MUCH harder. He also makes you do labs which are annoying and confusing. Gives in class handouts but doesn't explain them. Calculus is challenging and definitely worth the 5 credits. Grades homework.
He is a very good teacher. This is a tough class but he makes it worth while. Easy grader, nice, helpful, if you talk to him he will help you.
Austin is one of the premier math professors at GV. Tests are fair, homework is minimal, and labs are practical. Funny, entertaining, and generous. Extremely helpful in office hours. Really wants students to succeed. Highly recommended!
Austin is by far the best math professor in the department. I'm an engineer who hadn't taken Calc. in 1.5 years, but Austin taught the subject to me with little trouble. Austin is also almost always available during office hours and VERY willing to help - so stop by if you need it. Show up to class b/c his notes are wonderful! Grading is fair too.
I loved his class. I very much dislike math, but he made it very understandable. Unlike one of the reviews below, he gradually stepped up the difficulty of problems, starting with the most simple and graduating to harder problems as the topic progressed. Very helpful. His voice reminds me of the guy who always says "oh nooo" from Family Guy lol.
Great prof. Definitely would take a class from him again if I got the chance. Explains the material well, goes fast enough to keep the fast learners interested, but slows down enough to help the people lagging catch up.
Incredibly teacher and a great guy. Very into his subject and very willing to help his students. I highly suggest him.
Professor Austin is a great guy. He has a funny sense of humor and takes pride in his job. That being said, this class was extremely difficult. He never gave time to learn a topic, only taught it and moved on. Exams were difficult and homework was mandatory. There is NO textbook, so I had no problems to practice for exams.
Nice guy, but does not like to help students that struggle. He gets an attitude with you if you don't understand. Spends 5 minutes explaining a topic and 45 minutes letting you figure it out. The text was terrible too. Exams are harder than anything he tries to teach (bad prof). Half of my class either dropped or is retaking the course. Good luck.
Incredibly nice and kind professor! Truly cares about the education of his students. Best course I have ever taken, not only at Grand Valley, but in my life. Has a unique teaching style that develops self-discovery, class is half lecture, half you actually working through problems. Best way to learn math! Do yourself a grand favor and take Austin!
Prof. Austin is a great professor, I would definitely recommend him. He is a really nice guy who you can tell genuinely cares about the success of his students, and teaching the material. Homework is only a couple of times a week, and test/quizzes are about one a month. Overall it was a great experience.
Had him in previous courses - loved him. Did not disappoint in this one either. Explained course material very clearly but also allowed for student's to understand things in groups/on their own which helps in math. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Took this course once with Pierce. Retook it with Austin. Austin's 100% better at teaching this course. I not only understood all the content and concepts but didn't look at Diff. Eq. with such hatred after taking it the second time with Austin. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Linear Algebra's easiness and understanding all depends on the professor in my opinion - as do most mathematical courses. Austin not only excelled in translating the course well for the students but made me enjoy the class as well. No one in the class seemed to struggle much at all! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Dr. Austin does a really good job of explaining difficult concepts in ways that are easy to understand, but if you don't understand he is very helpful when asked questions, both in class and office hours. Very friendly. Grades assignments promptly and gives helpful feedback. As the last few reviews say, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Incredibly difficult course material made simple by Dr. Austin's fantastic teaching style, drawing connections from basic concepts to advanced techniques. Always excited to be in class and teach us new material. Great professor
This prof is awesome! I don't know how he makes math funny, but he does. I hadn't taken a math class in over a year and calc 2 wasn't bad with Dr. Austin. Take him if you get the chance!!
Professor Austin has very helpful thought processes that he shares each day. He is always reminding students to think about the problems differently. Tests always have a twist in them, but they are never a surprise. He ensures that you know what you are doing.
Awesome professor! Nice, caring guy who loves teaching math. Easy to understand and ready to answer any questions. Worksheets to work on during each class after 15 min lecture. Very little homework outside of class. Weekly lab done with partner. Tests were difficult but if you studied you were fine. Weekly quizzes were pretty easy.
No one has inspired me more than Professor Austin. This semester he was on sabbatical, which made me very sad. Each day I would sit at the table outside his office hoping he'd stop by, but he never appeared. My life has been empty without him.
Preview activities are very helpful as well as the in-class assignments. Weekly quizzes are not super difficult and he tells you exactly what to expect. He explains things well and genuinely cares that you understand what you're doing.
Really great teacher! He truly wants you to be successful and will put in the time to make sure you get there. If you are willing to put in the effort and try then you will have no problem passing his classes. You get worksheets to fill out everyday in class and whatever you don't finish he sends out the answer key so you can finish.
Professor Austin genuinely cares about student understanding and success. He gives weekly quizzes and the exams are fair. He structures the class in a way such that you learn the real world applications of linear algebra which makes the class worth going to. I'd highly recommend Professor Austin.
If you don't like being lectured, then this is a good teacher to take. He lectures for about ten minutes of class and then gives you activities to do with a partner. His tests were a little challenging but fair. He was always willing to meet outside of class. He used a lot of real world applications that were interesting and engaging.
He is the best professor I've had at GV. He does a great job communicating ideas and connecting them throughout class with the activities every class period. He was very helpful in class and very accessible in his office hours. He is always in a good mood and makes it easy to come to class, making the hour fly by. Homework was very manageable
David Austin is one of the best teachers at GVSU. I had for LA 1 and 2. I never thought he liked me, but I always had a great deal of respect for him, because of his skill in both math and teaching. Take a class with him if you can.
Hes a good guy and I feel a nice grader
Great Professor likes to make jokes, funny guy and cares about students.
He really helped me to understand the material. His tests were very similar to the practice questions he gave out. Used a lot of handouts. There were a few graded assignments and he graded them all very fairly and wasn't particular about the way you got your answer. Very friendly and never made you feel bad about asking questions.
Definitely the best math professor out there. He made everything look so easy and he knows where every student is struggling and hell reach out in class to help you understand. Be ready for a lot of fun exercises in class
One of the best Math professors and professors in general. Is always there to help you and is flexible with due dates. (He understands we have a life outside of school) If you can take him do!
Could not ask for a more caring professor. He really wants you to learn and gives lots of positive encouragement. I have never had a teacher care more about their students than professor Austin. Lots of in class participation is needed with weekly quizzes but everything helps learn the material. Homework isn't terrible. 10/10 recommend.
I took calc 1 as an online course meeting for 2 hrs twice a week and class was v boring. Professor Austin explains concepts for 10 minutes and then gives a worksheet to you to work on in small groups. The worksheets were extremely hard because you don't know what you are doing. Ask for help from him in small groups. Wouldn't recommend taking him...
Professor Austin was such a nice professor. There is only the final exam and quizzes every week. Online and in person homework has unlimited trys. He explained calculus in a perfect way. I do not like math, but he made it interesting and easy. Would 100000% recommend
One of the absolute best professors I have ever had. He wasn't the original professor and took over the class in week 3. Made the class so much fun and interesting. He genuinely cares so much and makes teaching very personable. Can't say enough good things about him. Understanding, willing to help, caring, great at explaining, patient, kind, etc.
Prof was always there to help you and he is very good at explaining topics.
Dr. Austin is amazing. I had the pleasure of having him for two courses this semester, both of which were my best classes, performance-wise. He shows an example and then has you work through many examples to build your own foundational understanding, all the while offering feedback and answering questions until you prove that you understand.
He was truly one of my favorite professors, and I would definitely recommend taking one of his classes. He mainly lectures in the first half and then lets you work on problems with your group but is always there to help. You can tell he cares about his students.
Actually an amazing human being who genuinely cares about your learning. He may seem a little timid at first but he wants the best for his students and clearly explains the criteria needed to be successful. I was never afraid to ask a question, no matter how dumb it sounded since he was always willing to answer the questions you have!!
Really good teacher. If you do something incorrectly he is very good at seeing what you were trying to do and explaining how you can get from there to the correct answer. Class was challenging without being frustrating.
Professor Austin was awesome. Really good feedback, absolutely cares about your understanding, and his little jokes slipped into his teaching keeps you engaged. Best math prof I've ever had.
Has a greatly simplified teaching program for MTH 124. Grading is simple to understand, as well as assignments and due dates(very consistent). Inside of class he is great, he will throw in some jokes and is great with 1 on 1 help.
Dr. Austin is a great professor and I recommend taking courses with him just remember to meet all the homework deadlines or your grade will suffer like mines did this semester other then that he's a great professor to have and is very helpful if you do fall behind.
Dr Austin was by far my favorite math prof. He was so helpful when you needed 1 on 1 help in class. Always wants to make sure you understand. Consistent homework. Sends weekly grading reports. He makes sure youre engaged with his jokes and great humor. All around great prof who you can tell loves doing what he does.
Dr. Austin is the goat.
Dr. Austin is my favorite professor I have had at GVSU. He cares so much about the success of his students not only in his class but also other classes as well. I recommend him if you ever get the opportunity to take his class. He is not only a very good teacher but also one of the nicest guys I have met.
Professor Austin is an amazing math teacher. He makes the material engaging with his humor and personable teaching style. The class is challenging but manageable - just make sure to read the textbook, attend study sessions, and use Unstuck ai for extra practice. Highly recommend taking this class with him.
If you want to learn Linear Algebra, you take Dr. Austins class. If you want to learn Linear Algebra 2, you take Dr. Austins class. If you want to learn Linear Algebra 3, you take Dr. Austin's class. He is one of the single best educators I have had in all my years of learning. He wrote the amazing textbook you will use and it is free fore everyone
Dr. Austin is incredibly passionate about teaching. He is one of the few people you meet in life whose intellect is unparalleled but they strive to bring you up by any means necessary. He is calculated and hard to read at times, but he genuinely cares about each student. He admires/appreciates demonstrations of persistence & perseverance.
