While interesting and passionate about Sociology, especially Criminal Sociology.... and highly educated... Dr. Baker is very harsh and abrasive, even in front of the whole class and will put down any students who question him. Not a people person!

He is an excellent professor. Very helpful. He makes sure you learn the subject you are taking. I have taken 3 of his classes and received an A in all of them. Do what is asked and you will get an A. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM.
His criminology class is almost impossible to figure out, especially the online one. His questions come out of chapters that he didin't assign and it becomes a game up scavenger hunt. Avoid at all costs.
Class was extremely easy, but he's not too friendly of a guy. He has no sympathy for people, very abrasive. Take this class if you want an easy A, just don't talk to him.

He did not respond to emails, but when students posted questions for other students on the message board, he responded and berated them. NOT helpful and unapologetically conceited and arrogant. Uncaring and would do better writing texts and not teaching.

his lectures have no relavance to his tests, there are no assignments. he has a very aggressive personality!
If you want to be insulted, take Dr Baker. He's funny and I learned some stuff, but what he discusses in lectures has nothing to do with the tests, and tests are 50% of your grade (or something like that). I didn't like being called an "idiot" because of who I voted for.
THE WORST! He is very insulting. Took his online class, and it was horrible. Everyone is scared to even post a message. I wouldn't recommend this teacher at all. If you want to save yourself a headache then don't take him. As you can see he has terrible reviews already. Also, the book he wrote sucks

I thougt the class was very interesting he clearly stated his view in whats going on in the world and those of yo who say his lectures didn't have anything to do with the test need to read up and study on your own before class, like he tells you to, then you'll understand the class. Easy class.
I have spent several years in college and never had another teacher as horrible as "BAKER" in my life. He's very uneducated and an insult to RCC. It's sad that teachers are allowed to be paid money that are as horrible as he is. NEVER TAKE HIS CLASSES!! DON'T be afraid to SPEAK UP!!!

By far the worst instructor I ever had. Even after going through the reading assignments, I couldn't answer many of his questions. The books don't even talk specifically about any questions this instructor gives. I had to drop the class. Unfortunately it's a required class for xfer to UCR, so it looks like I'm stuck going back through it soon.
Exellent Professor. Really makes you think about what is going on in the world. As for the tests, How many other professors do you know of who let you use notes on tests? But you must study every word in that text book (no lie), draw out the graphs and note all of the statistics, don't over look anything in the book.
He sucks, he's mean and likes to humiliate students who give incorrect answers. He hates younger students and in general, just sucks!!
The most unhelpful professor I have ever had!!! I had him for online classes, and he never answered any questions the students had. His assignments were a joke. He was very unclear about what he expected. It is so disappointing to take away absolutely nothing from a class.

One of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. He is very funny and he may insult certain people by the things he say. But hey its Soc its the way life is. Very easy class just do what he says read the book, read it again, and read it again because the test is going to be only on the book. Dont let him intimidate you he is only clowning.
This man is an awful. I took his online course and I had trouble downloading my work, technical assistance didn't get back to me in time and he still would not accept my work. He gave us 15 essay questions per week and graded on a 4 point scale. If you missed one question he would deduct one whole point (this equals out to a grade and a 1/2.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! he gives about 20 essay questions a week and expects them to be LONG. very unclear on what he expects, and expects WAY too much. i had 13 pages on content, but b/c i didnt turn in one section i got 0 points! DO NOT TAKE BAKER!!!
Simple online course having about 12-15 questions per week on a section. If you think about it just type stuff of your textbook and he will give you full credit which is a perfect score. He just looks at it and gives you a perfect score trust me.
Very unprofesional, made me very angry so I don't want to say anything mean...but suffice it to say I wouldn't recommend taking his class if you are passionate about Sociology as a subject.

I loved this professor. He has no tolerance for stupidity, and is very abrasive, but if you just go to him personally with a problem, he is very sweet and very helpful. He is very soft hearted when it comes to single mothers, and will be very eager to accomodate. Do not take him if you are not serious though.
I really liked the text but because it was online, I do not know the teacher personally so I cannot rate him as a teacher. I know that many people had problems with communication and according to my grade he does not follow the syllabus. I worked hard and completed the assignments and still refused to give me a passing score that I deserved.
I took his class online. I won't lie and say it was easy, but it wasn't hard either. The assignments are pretty straight forward from the beginning. He won't give you any credit if the assignment is late or if it is not completed. The questions are long, but not difficult. I got a perfect score on every assignment just by putting in a little effort
Instructor expects a lot for a few points. Not only that but he is very insulting and rude. On the first assignment he beraded the whole online class about how poor the quality of the work was. There were 8 essay questions and the whole assignment was worth 4 points. I completed the assignment in it's entirety and then he had the nerve to give a 1.
PLAGIARISM IS THE ONLY THING THAT WILL GET YOU A PASSING GRADE! He sent me an example of a 4(A). It was exactly the same as the book. This Prof needs to be fired. The Dean reviewed my work and agreed I had a C, but he was giving me a F. To get a passing grade, DO NOT take this class. He gave me a C, but the Dean had to threaten him with his job.
This is the kind of professor who likes to show that he is smarter than the students by putting them down. His grading standards are unclear and he tries to trip students up so that he can mark down their grades. I learned nothing at all in this class as all of the assignments are simply copying information from a textbook that he wrote.
I had his class a while ago and went through it okay. There were many people offended by Baker's crude and inappropriate comments throughout the semester. According to Baker, I'm the root cause of all of the world's evil because of my beliefs. Bad teacher. Thank goodness the tests were fairly straight forward.
Uncaring, condescending, ungrateful. I have never in all my schooling had a professor I have disliked as much as this one. He expects a lot for his weekly assignments. If you ask why you got a 1 out of 4 on the assignment you've spent countless hours working on, he'll be very rude and condescending. I sincerely regret taking his class.

I spend at least 10 hours between reading assignments and typing an essay, and I still am getting a low grade (very low grade).
This has been an online class and there has been ZERO interaction with Baker and the class. He has not responded to ANY emails and there is absolutely NO leniency in regard to turning an assignment in late, even if it's the same day. I have never HATED a class so much in my life! Thanks Baker!
honestly, he is pretty clear about what he wants. The class is very cut and dry. I would have found the material a lot more interesting if i didn't have to type up hours of essay questions each week. He is an extremly hard grader. I think He is probably a smart guy, just doesn't know how to interact with people in general.
This is by far the most horrible professor I have ever come across. He doesnt return emails, communicates only to belittle others, and there's not a fair bone in his body. He is close-minded and needs to retire already, as he does a disservice to RCC by teaching. I complained to the deans office about him and their basic response was 'get in line'.
Hard grader
Took the online course. No tests, just grades you on what you write, which has to be a lot to get a good grade. He used a sample of a student that he thought was good and the English was so terrible I could not understand what was being conveyed! Is not clear as to what his expectations are until after he grades you. I even asked him several times.
I recomend this teacher highly. I don't know for his other classes but this one was very straight forward and tests are right out of the book. Notes are allowed for tests. Don't pretend you know what you're talking about he'll prob embarrass you.Very informative and will help you understand what you don't get. Don't take anything he says personally
I took this course online. I was very frustrated at first but once I got his rythem I did fine. Just copy the answers straight out of the book for perfect score. Its scary but works. He always answered my email quickly if I did not use the email in the online website but emailed directly as his syllabus says to do. I found him very understanding.

Very tough class. I worked my butt off, but I got an A. This class is what college should be. You work, you learn. Excellent but unforgiving professor. If you take it seriously, you'll be rewarded for it. I'd be willing to bet that the folks who have trashed this prof's rating are lazy folks who took Soc 1 looking for an easy grade. Wrong prof.
I loved reading these comments! The people who wrote about him are obviously deluded about their own educational experience and goals. I was the ONLY person in the class who followed his directions on getting an A and I was the only one who got one. He wants you to succeed so suck it up!
I took Baker over the winter course and hated him. He was arrogant, unhelpful and downright rude. I ended up taking him again (he took over a class for professor Davin) and I enjoyed it significantly more. He is very straightforward, and will give an honest opinion no matter who he offends. You'll learn a lot, and it'll be fun too.
He is difficult but not impossible. If you honestly work in his class you will get a good grade. Do the homework and make sure you are writing you're valid opinions and not just fluff. He's a friendly guy and wants you to do well. I would suggest him to anyone.
He doesn't actually teach anything. The entire class is based on your reading assignment and then answering his ill-formed questions. He provides no help or feedback and does not state his expectations until after the assignment is submitted and graded. Fail.
At 1st, this professor was intimidating and unhelpful, but the more effort I put into the class, the more help I received. This class should not be taken lightly. You will work, but you will learn more in this class than any other class you will take. I have learned so much & recommend this professor to those who can handle the workload. Good luck!
Wow- I took Social Probs at FullColl but dropped it, decided to retake it here and the book is very vague- it doesn't get to the points of social problems in my opinion. There are questions to answer and he gives you a 1-4... I spent hours working on the HW and he gave me a 0. Not very helpful.
A lot of people who rate Dr. Baker low is because they do not fully answer the questions. Reading the textbook is required to pass, so it won't be an easy class. Weekly assignment should be at lest 5-6 pages typed in signle space format. The assignement took me about 15hrs to complete. I put a lot of effort in to them to get 4/4. I got an A!
I have taken a lot of online classes and Baker's are the worst. There is no interaction at all and he depends totally on the books. I worked for 8-10 hours on each lesson yet feel like I learned very little even though I got an A in the class. His "teaching" style actually made me hate the subject and Sociology is my major.
I go to USC and I am taking his online class to transfer for extra units. His questions are ridiculous, and the book is horrible. He helped write the book, so he uses it, but I am sure no other professor in the world would. Its terrible, and badly written. Do not take this class.
His approach is abstracted, and he goes on and on about vague discriptions on the given topic. home work is ridiculous, a scale 1-4, and its automatic 0 if your missing just 1 answer. not a big help, when it comes to reviewing test, he would ask if u have questions, and then say didnt we go over that already...I DO NOT RECOMMEND this.teacher at ALL
Professor Baker is a teacher from planet Earth, relaying information he has gained from personal experience and studys to his students. His courses are managable and are about average difficulty IF you are willing to learn and can simply follow instructions. If so there will be little problems in his classes. An excellent teacher and maybe mentor.
Funny Guy, Bad teacher... Texbook and Tests are in his own words, REMEMBER THAT. Assignments aren't hard just long and boring if your good at copying(hence no room for expression unless you wanna risk getting a lower grade). lost interest in sociology after this class. I took this class online and the best word to describe it is tedious. All work is based on weekly chapter questions from two different texts which can vary in quantity. Average time spent on assignments is about 5-6 hours-best to do a couple per day. Assignment are graded off a 1-4 point scale. Just complete the work in full and you will do fine.
When I first took Baker's class, I was somewhat intimidated, however, if you pay attention to his instructions & read the books, you'll do fine. I really enjoyed all 3 classes I've taken of his & plan on taking another in the future!
He is very funny and entertaining. very crude humor and tons of swearing. very difficult class. of those who do not drop, which half the class does, more than half of those remaining will fail. avoid him if you are in the slightest way a slacker.
I have this guy for an online class at the moment. The assignments are horribly boring, and he apparently gives a straight zero if you miss a question. Don't bother asking if you can turn in late work: he means what he says. I think if I were to meet him I'd offer him a nice solid kick in the nuts

I worked harder in this class then any other classes. I'm an A student and he gave me a B. He was never available to help. Not understanding at all. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Baker is very upfront with what he wants you to do. READ THE BOOK and don't BS your way through the homework and you'll be fine. This is NOT a coasting class and he will rip into you if he thinks you are slacking. The book is the key to his class. He wrote it teaches with it and his tests are extremely detailed from it.

when I read the syllabus for this class he was very unclear about what he wanted us to write. I turned in an assigment and he didnt give me a chance to correct the assignment he just gave me a zero. This teacher is very disrespectful online and doesn't offer much help when an assignment is incorrect. Whatever you do don't take this teacher !
This is the worst professor I have ever taken. He doesn't state what he wants in his writing assignments and doesn't give any advice on how to fix it. He is a pompous jerk who thinks he knows everything and he is always right. He contradicts himself and doesn't seem to stick to what he asks he wants. His classes are a waste and he should be fired.
his criminology class is very cool. However, the homework and test are not very easy he makes you go into detail for homework and for his test it is from the book and lectures. Very interesting instructor he makes the class lectures great to understand, but work difficult to get an A or even a B. Loved the class anyway!
i think he is an athesist but he doesnt know what he is and he always blasphemes God. but I failed a test and pasted all the homework and he said i was screwed. my grandma died and i tried to get the homework he said sorry for your grandma you need to be here. dont take him! rude
I took this class online, and it was a little difficult The thing I did not like about the class was the fact that he never responded to my emails. I tried emailing a total of five times about an issue I had with an assignment and he never emailed me back. It was really annoying. He could have at least wrote me back.
i do not recommend prof. baker. i think rcc should fire him. he does not respond to emails, his text is outdated and incomprehensible, he is rude, and his grading is ridiculous. i ignored these comments, and i wish i hadn't. i thought the bad comments were from people who didn't try. i was wrong.
Dr. Baker was very entertaining. He is very knowledgeable in the subject he is teaching and really takes time to answer questions. He loves making fun of students and is hilarious. I really recommend him to anyone you just have to stay on his good side or he will run you into the ground.
His instructions are crystal clear for an online class. The workload is heavy but doable, and you should be typing at least six pages per assignment. Indeed he is rude and a stickler, which is ironic since his assignments are littered with grammatical problems. Nevertheless, keep your head down, do the work, and you get an easy "A."
Dr Baker is AMAZING I changed my major because of this man. He is THEEEE BEST college professor I have yet to have. His class is very entertaining and I recommend his classes to everyone! As long as you take class notes you will be fine. The book readings arent needed but you should skim through the book to get general concepts!
Alot of people say he's hard but it's just people are lazy. I found the class to be fairly interesting Baker goes off topic ALOT he still has good teaching methods. Took this class online for major credit, read all of the reviews but figured would be fine bc I generally go ahead of the lecture if able to. All he tells you is he expects college level responses for the assignment. Do-able, but he never responds or says anything. Its basically students helping students. I withdrew, a poor prof is not worth my GPA
Although I did about 85% of the work,I still received an F. When asked to submit my attendence for financial aid I was given a speech as to how the attendency policy is a waste of his time. I finally had to go to the Board and complain. Took this class again with a different instructor and received an A. Odd, I know!
eh... took it online. Easy A IF you are willing to do the work. If you want a good grade, each assignment per week will take anywhere between 6-14 hours to finish, depending on how fast you work. Also,I wouldn't recommend this unless you qualify for ENG-1A at least. this class is pretty dull IMO, but put in the effort, it comes up a lot in life.
This class was rather interesting. To pass, be sure to read the book and do the homework. Don't take this class if you are easily offended, he is a bit arrogant and will give nicknames to almost everyone in the class. Be nice to him and he is sure to like you.
This guy is an awful teacher. Will refuse to give any feedback clarity, uses a syllabus from 2008, is very standoffish and RUDE, does not care if you pass. DON'T TAKE HIM. I've gotten A's in every other Soc. class I've taken, and failed this guy.

Took his class online. The work was pretty straightforward. The assignments consisted of weekly short essays. Reading the material is NECESSARY! The ability to write effectively is vital. No discussion boards. You can pass his class as long as you're not lazy and not an idiot.
Although he's not very helpful with certain things, if you follow the guidelines he sets forth in the syllabus down to every last piece of it then you should do fine. There's one assignment every week and it has questions from two different books. If you do it properly it should take a couple hours, although the answers are pretty easy to find.
Took his online summer cimonology course. Professor Baker fails to communicate with students and does not provide feedback on assignments which fails to assist students in improving on subsequent assignments. Professor is clearly not invested in his students success. I would HIGHLY suggest avoiding taking any of his courses!
Second time taking this professor. His lessons were not updated, and he often waited until the weekend before to post the latest assignment. The subject is boring, with every chapter saying the same thing, and the homework questions lacking any real insight into the material. I would avoid this class and instructor if possible.
Very boring class, and a total cry-fest. The text (which was written by the professor) is nothing more than a compilation of complaints about how the system works against the average person and how we don't have any hope of making any real money. Not helpful on the assignments, which are very monotonous and repetitive. Avoid at all costs.
I love his class. He's sarcastic and funny, and it makes the class interesting. You need the book to do the homework, which is very simple. It's just a lot of content. I'm not sure why so many people are hating on him, he rocks!!! I'd recommend him to anyone looking to study criminal law. Also, prof. Baker did not write the book.

I took his criminology close online and I enjoyed it. I learned a lot and he was very straight forward when it came to discussions and assignments. I also liked that you could work at your own pace, I would definitely recommend this class for anyone interested in the subject

Mr. Baker is not as bad as everyone says, yeah his class requires a lot of writing but it's not that bad. People in my opinion are lazy and want an easy A! Study people!
2nd course I have taken by Baker and he's as awful as ever! He failed to grade the last 6 weeks of assignments until the semester concluded so you don't know how you're doing until the end of the course. Assignments are questions about the text which end up being 3,000 word essays each week. It's a lot of work so be prepared to write.
Each assignment is ridiculously long and takes about a full day or so to complete it, if you do it properly. You will be putting in long hours every week but if your dedicated to you work then you can receive an A.
Ladies and gentlemen!!! What can I say? Taking this class was really something. Yes the assignments are hard, and he does not mess around. He really isn't that bad, but as he put it, he isn't there to hold your hand. There is a lot of work, but as long as you do it, you can pass this class, so I say give it a try if you don't mind a long of work.
There was definitely a lot to learn in this course. Each week there was a chapter in the main book to be read and articles to read from the second book. Then you had to Answer 5-7 questions for each of the readings. As long as you answer all parts to the questions you will manage. Was a little slow to grade assignments.

Dr. Baker is a great professor. He is direct to the point and has a lot of good information to offer to his students. He is a very educated man. I would take more classes with him.
My favorite class at rcc hands down! He is so funny, and his work isn't all that bad. All of the answers to his Weekly HW is in the text.The biggest advise I can give you is to study like a psycho for the first test. After that, he usually lets us do our test with an open book.
Definitely one of my favorite professors. He is extremely intimidating at first, and he will make it seem like the class is hard. But it really isn't. It's just time consuming. Put effort into your homework (all of the answers are directly in the book), bring your book to the test (he'll let you use it after the first test) and you'll do well.
RUDE. He uses very crude and usually offensive and hurtful language towards students. His test are straight out of the book. But very hard to find in the text. Homework is long and tedious. However, it is half of your grade, but he doesn't clarify that important piece of information in the syllabus. I would never take him again.
Had him for this past winter sem. He's not easy, but he's not hard either. EVERYTHING is in the textbook. You have to be able to READ ALL OFF THE CHAPTERs assigned. I am taking him online for the Summer term and the homework is a lot. Answer all the questions correctly, he reads everything. His grading is no joke. Do your work the right way and you will be fine. Be prepared to spend a lot of time on the homework assignments.

All you have to do is answer homework questions(1 or 2 paragraphs should be fine)with substance and you should get an A no problem. There are no dbq's,quizzes or tests. If you want to complain about hard try taking a calculus class :p
His courses were full of shocking realities that we are currently living. You have to read the material and study on your own, so its up to you if you want to pass or fail. Great courses for anyone wanting to know about our society
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! I've never had a reason to look up my professors till now. This is my third year in college and have never ran into any trouble. This is honestly the worst class I have ever taken, not because the class but because the professor. No real feedback, grades your work late, don't expect any help, RUDE, and TALKS DOWN TO STUDENTS.
Did not like his teaching style, or lack off. His online class is set up this way, read 12 chpts and do 4-5 questions for each. Thats it. no quizzes, no exams, no discussion boards, no lectures, nada, zip. While this sounds easy, its not a learning environment. He grades 1-4 pts for each chptr. No real feedback, just "needs more detail" not helpful
This is definitely a tough course, BUT it is very straightforward. You learn on your own basically. He gives you questions that make you think. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS! He will knock off points to 1-2 out of 4 if you do not read the instructions and follow them correctly. If you've taken eng 1A or 1B this is easy.
I would never take his class ever again because he is im the worst teacher ever!!! He doesn't call you bybyour name he calls you by your race and he doesn't even teach! It's either you read it or you won't get it. When he puts you on blast he will make you look dumb and it's horrible.
I wrote 10-15 pages a week. Baker NEVER responded to emails, and it was an online class so there wasn't another way to talk to him. If you mess ANYTHING up, it's a zero for the whole week. Do that twice, and your A is gone. If you're a sociology major you have to take this class, so be careful. Triple-check everything. You're still doomed though.
I am taking class online, for the 2nd time. No tests at all, just lots of reading. He assigns homework every week with essay questions from the chapters. If you mess up at all, skip a question on accident, anything.... He gives you a zero. Each assignment I've turned in was between 2000-3000 words each. Nightmare of a class. Anyone else is better.
His online class is challenging, but if you have a true passion for sociology, this class is easy. His questions are tough, but they actually make you think and analyze. If you're lazy, do not take this class. You actually have to read all the chapters and supplemental readings, AND you have to follow instructions, otherwise you will fail.
He wants online classes to address papers specifically to a T if you don't include extra spacing or a indication in where one question is answered and another begins, he is not able to comprehend when one student is making a transition in a question. And needs clear indintation of where different answers begin.
Can't manage his own online course much less grade anything critically. Will look at your submitted paper and within one minute decide it doesn't meet the "academic standards" that he's magically willed into existence. Feedback for submitted assignments is literally copy-pasted hand-wave vague statements telling you you didn't do enough.
Just dropped my summer online class & this is the first class I have ever dropped. I was scored very low on my assignment and when I asked him for feed back he called me ridiculous. This professor is extremely rude and likes to puff out his chest at his students rather then developing them. I will continue to read the material as I love sociology.
The best sociology professor I ever had as a professor. Yeah he's intimidating. I clashed with him the fist day and it wasn't fun but I worked hard, studied did my outlines and he provided valuable input. He was tireless in encouraging me and trying to get me to do a PHD in sociology. One of my best teachers ever. I got As in all his classes.
He did not respond to anything on discussion board. Only gave homework, nothing else for credit, and wanted multiple short essays per chapter and 2 chapters a week. Each assignment is only 4 points and there only 12 of them. No extra credit. His phrasing for his questions could be confusing or misleading. Asks for more than is covered in book.
Just finished Summer online. Pretty easy. No test or quizzes online just assignments (questions). But you have to make sure you answer chapter questions correctly and follow syllabus or he will not give you credit. Professor disappears sometimes and won't respond to emails!
Online class. You get 12 assignments over the course of 6 weeks. There are multiple questions that require long critical thinking responses. If you try to get by with 3-5 sentence answers, you most likely won't get good grades. The possible points are 4 so there is minimal room for errors. If you do the work, as assigned, you'll pass.
One of the most interesting course's I've had. Professor assigns a series of very thought-provoking questions weekly, based on text but can use other sources too. No tests, so grade is based on good, thorough answers. Takes a lot of time, but well worth it. Easy if you put in the time. No discussion board or comments though, but he answers email
Weekly reading assignments and questions to answer in (short) essay form. There are on average about 5 questions with several parts each, so you do a lot lot of writing each week. You can do work ahead because all the assignments are available. VERY interesting. A very learning experience If you like writing and working independently.
Ok! So the reason I am doing this is because, at the start of the course RCC faculty warned me about taking this professor for who knows what reasons, when in reality this was an easy A, All I had to do each week was read 2 chaps and answer 5-7 questions in 4-5 sentences. He was awesome, but if your a lazy student then avoid him and me.
Dr. Baker has no test in his class. It's the 1st time I've had a class that doesn't require test so I was apprehensive. But I quickly found out why. You won't learn much taking test in this class. He sets up writing assignments once a week that pose thought-provoking questions that cause you to not only learn on a deeper level but emphasize as well
He is very difficult. He wants long essays each week. If you aren't a good writer, you wont pass. He grades hard. If my assignment wasn't at least 2500 words I knew I wouldn't get a good grade.
I took bakers class years ago and still apply things that I learned from his lectures to date. not for simple minded people this is a college class on sociology he makes people feel awkward by race religion sex income the same way our society does he's brilliant pay attention and apply.what your reading. if you don't then go be a truck driver.
Excellent professor who believes in being honest about social constructs in the context of America.
