201, 202, 203 sequence improves over time
goo at what he does. tries hard to help and does many examples. best in physics department i have had.

good teacher. straight forward tests. watch multiple choice! good for partial credit on write out problems. 8 am too early though.
Great teacher. Very clear. A little cocky but very straight forward and clear. Best science teacher I have had.
Awesome teacher, awesome class. Made complicated physics concepts easy and fun to understand and learn.
Other than the ponytail, he's not too bad of a teacher, with the exception of the occasional sarcastic remark to a student's question once in a while.
Very clear and wants us to understand the material. Makes hard physics not so bad. was rude to people asking dumb questions but has improved over time.
loose the skullett
One of the worst teachers I have ever had, he should be fired
Very difficult/time consuming class, but very clear and straight forward. Seems a bit full of himself at times, but tests are fair, long labs, but overall I'ld give him a 4 out of 5(good). Love the remote control thing, very helpful.
Hes got a skullet. He has gotten better with the insult thing but he expects everyone to use the completely retarded approach toward problem solving that he uses.
he isnt helpful, and is mean when you have a question. everybody is to scared to go to his office hours becasue he will make fun of you.he is really smart and knows his stuff but dosent have any people skills.
Trust me, both David and the Physics Department have improved exponentially.
Dr. Scullet ardent lover of scare tactics--don’t fall for em’
If you can avoid taking physics at OSU, I stongly suggest doing so. Dave Bannon is the worst teacher I have ever had. He has no problem ridiculing students in front of the class among other things. He has no right to be teaching.
Most difficult courses I have ever taken. But, this guy tries to help the best he can.

big class. very difficult. avoid if possible. prof is OK.
Class is cake if you've taken physics 21X, easy if you've had 20X, and a struggle if you haven't had similar. He works hard to make class more entertaining.
make sure you go to class or read somebody's notes. the book is useless.
much better than Krane and easier too
hard course. Bannon is wierd but helpful.
The class average on the first midterm was a 55%!! It should NEVER be that low if it's a good teacher. He's horribly mean to students and has no problem making them feel like idiots in front of everyone. Try taking it at LBCC with Jim Ketter.. MUCH better
He doesn't put too much effort into teaching but if you can keep up with it he does his job. The class isn't all that hard, I took it in the summer and did fine.
I went to his office he chained me to his desk with handcuffs and tortured me for hours! I have the scars to prove it!
Hard to do well on his exams
no curve? does this guy actually think we are going to learn something? this is OSU!
why do I have to take physics?
Condensending, incapable of relaying the basic concepts, lacks imagination. Very poor instructor

This guy is the funniest runner I have ever seen. To watch him plod back and forth between his two overheads is laughable at best. I hate the PRS deal that he worships because it removes the teacher from the grading process.
the answers submitting via PRS units aren't graded, but they do help me wake up at such an early hour
Good Teacher

hair guy
hard tests
Not hard to begin with because there's no math, but he made it even easier by how clear he was. The study guides follow our lecture notes exactly and the test questions are really simple.
Tries to get everyone in the class for plagiarism, even if it is cited in the footnotes. Tells you right before your final that you could possibly be expelled, and then expects you to do good. WORST. PROF. EVER.
Very helpful and practical.
He has difficult tests. Decent teacher, though.
He does think everyone is plagarizing even if you totally are not. Races through math, even with his bacc core classes that claim to not *require* math.
they guy he accused of plagerism WAS plagerising. if you write your own stuff and cite your sources properly you're fine. he's not out to get anybody.
Actually, he treats all OSU students like retards. Can't really blame him though. Most of us are pretty lame.
pretty good teacher. treats you like you are stupid, but teaches physics pretty well. the tests are pretty hard, but if you study you will do fine in the class.
Lectures are clear, but he is extremely arrogant and somewhat pigheaded. When the entire class seemed to have misunderstood a test question, he refused to consider that he may have been unclear. Sometimes he jumps into the wall during class...seriously.
He does jump into the wall. What a nut.
I had him as recitation instructor for both physics 212 and 213, and in general he had a clear and helpfull teaching style that encouraged us to think for ourselves and find the answers with his help, rather than him just giving us the answers.
though very strange, he teaches physics well and somehow manages to make the class interesting.
I had him over the summer. Not an easy course and he doesn't make it any easier.
Treats us like middle schoolers. I usually come to lecture and am ready to take notes 5 minutes beforehand, so I try to read the Barometer for a minute and he blows up at me "If you're gonna read a paper please go to another class." I'm expected to just sit there for 5 minutes? Threw a book o
He nags the class about doing homework all the time. Talks about not using a calculator way too much. I'm actually afraid to ask questions in class.
I'm learning a lot more now that I'm not using my calculator as much
Great prof! Cares about your learning and allows plenty of time for questions. I thought tests were EZ. Doesn't curve. He's good at keeping class on track, so if you ask a question that's off topic he'll keep to the subject at hand. He is a goof but it keeps the class fun. Throws chalk if you nap.
He absolutely hates calculators (maybe a little out of touch with reality). Tests were moderatly difficult. Talks to the class like we are all physics majors and should already know this stuff. Not easy to follow and he doesn't explain his steps/reasoning/variables very well.
I really enjoyed this guy because he was clear, concise, a good teacher, and a complete jackass. Nothing is more entertaining when your learning physics than a prof. who has a great sense of humor.
Good professor, clear and precise. His lectures are entertaining and lively. Tests aren't horribly bad. The guy doesn't allow graphing calc. on tests so make sure you know your math. Better then other physics profs I have had before.
Not bad for a physics class. Tests were pretty easy.
Lately he has been teaching us like we are idiots. Come on man, we've made it this far, I think we know when and how much we need to study! Will freak out if you are reading a newspaper in his class and will throw tennis balls at you. Moody. I think he has a grudge against engineering majors.
Good prof, you'll learn a lot. Only thing is that he's a total jerk if you have a problem and have to talk to him during his office hours. Always dumps the blame on someone else.
His class is easy if you pay attention and at least read the book a little at a time. He will do ANYTHING to make sure everyone's paying attention, even if it makes him look stupid. He's climbed over desks, thrown tennis balls, and walked out or sat down at a desk in the middle of lecture.
Well, all you really have to do is show up to class... and since he part of your grade is from showing up anyway, you ought to. He explains stuff pretty well, if you don't understand something, ask and he'll be glad to explain it more in depth. If you don't learn what he teaches it's your own fault. The tests are a little hard though.
NOt a very good teacher, exams are difficult and doesn't respond well to asking for help during office hours. His favorite saying for his tests is to expect the unexpected. Why not teach what is expected from the students, that would make too much sense for him to do though
Good teacher. Explained physics well and tests were fair.
The material is NOT easy, and Bannon understands that and does try to help. Way better than any other physics prof. I've had.
I have gone to him for help on numerous occassions and found him to be at times demeaning. He lacks people skills but is devoted to his specialty.
For some reason, I found him so condescending...but, I have met some people that really liked him. This was the first class I ever attended here, and I felt dumb and scared everytime I went to class.

Bannon is a very effective teacher and has a very clear albeit strict way of teaching. The tests are challenging, but you get a fair amount of points to make up for your mistakes. Just don't expect to skip, slack off, and still do well in the class.
The lecture isn't bad, but his tests are crap. The first midterm wasn't hard, but you lost points for not writing down SIMPLE equations in symbolic form. Also, the partial credit is crap, if you make a trivial mistake and don't write down all of his "translation" BS then you lose tons of points, if you can take the other profs... do it

This prof made me HATE physics! I used to like it, but this guy makes it WAY too hard. If you can’t do it in your head like he can, you’re not good enough for him. More like a math class than a physics class.

opinions vary
lecture are very clear, tests are fair, material is very difficult
Hes a good instructor, you will learn a lot if you listen and take notes. also, take the recitation with the lecture, it gives you a chance to learn more one on one with a TA since lectures are large. He dosent put up with BS in his lectures either, and he is STRONGLY opposed to calculators, be prepared to see him smash a few.
Didn't like him freshman year b/c he was a little intimidating, he's so straightforward. But getting accustomed to his ways, things got easier and it's fairly easy to get an A. I mean, 90% is an A so that was nice. I got A's for PH211&PH212. Just do your HW. He writes out solutions online. I like this guy a lot. He's fair, he listens, he's clear.
Bannon makes physics interesting and practical. He can be very helpful during his office hours. The tests are challenging, but the 5% adjusted grade in the class is nice. The book and lab are worthless. Make it to the lectures and take the recitation if possible.
He is a really good physics teachers. He doesn't like people who slack off, and sometimes he comes off as a jerk, but he teaches his subject very well. Take him if you want to learn and not just get an easy grade.
Very good prof...makes lecture interesting, and you will learn a lot from taking him. You will have to work hard to do well in his class (especially with his tests) but it is definately possible to get an A. Focus on the notes you take in lecture, and take the recitation if you can.
Very controlling. Regardless of your ability to handle the class material, he goes crazy over students reading the paper, not showing up to his lecture. Watch your grammar and spelling to. You go to physics, you lose points on grammar. He treats us like high schoolers.
If your not as smart as him already, he already hates you! Talks down to students, is very hard, threatens students during class, condescending when looking for extra help. I lost points on a physics test because of GRAMMAR and SPELLING!!! Get Cannon, he is better@
He's a really good professor, and everything pretty much makes sense in lecture. His tests are pretty hard though, so study a lot and pay attention on how to solve problems, not just memorizing equations. He also doesn't like it when people talk/read the newspaper in class, so he will yell at you if you do. But otherwise he is great!
Dude is tough, but fair. You can do all right if you put the work in, but it takes a lot of work.
Dude's like out of control. Threw himself into the wall. Insane.
I am so scared of him.
I went to class 4 times besides lab. first day, first midterm, second midterm, class before final, and final. I got a b, make of it what you will. seemed like a nice guy though
Clear, concise, always to the point. Is always prepared with examples, doesn't make mistakes, and knows how to prepare the material in a way students can understand. Little full of himself.
He's very cool and easy to understand. Materials are hard(what do you expect?). I don't like the format of the test. If you don't know how to do one question you lose 2-3% of your total grade right there. Labs were a total waste of time. Don't worry about this class if you could think like Einstein. I barely passed 211
Experience prof who knows what he's talking about and what he should be talking about. I actually find his tests relatively easy and aced them all. My friend missed the final and had to take it over the summer. I showed him Bannon's version and he said it was cakewalk comparing to what he had to do. Overall, great prof, take him over others.
I took the whole series from him and hes a very excellent teacher. Not only does he know his stuff but he can teach it so you will understand. If you have a problem, he will help and wont let you leave until you have it. You will have to pay attention in class but this guy makes that easy. Tests are not too difficult, just study.
Dave knows his stuff and the tests are easy. He does make you feel stupid and he made me afraid to ask questions at office hours. HE WILL NEVER ADMIT HE IS WRONG, or at least you have to argue forever until he will admit it. I would recommend this class, he is the easier physics teacher; but go to the TA's for help, they aren't dicks.
****bag
Knows his stuff. Self-proclaimed ****. No kidding, he said it in class and its the truth. He gives you everything that you need for the exams but has no pity.
Dave can be an ass, but I've heard he's easier than the other teacher for this series. Tests usually aren't too bad if you've studied for them. It's not difficult to pass the classes in this series. However, it has been difficult for me to stick with it because I can't stand Dave. And I'm not the only one with a dislike for the man.
I took Dave for 4 different classes and he is the BEST instructor I have ever had. Alot of people think he is a jerk, but they just don't understand his sence of humor. If you get to know him he is really funny. Plus Dave will bend over backwards to help you, he even helped me with homework from other courses. Dave is a great guy!!!
He's a great professor. Teaches so you understand, but as a human being; a dick. It's very entertaining to mock him while he teaches though, "Would you please stop talking". Or my personal favorite, "Thanks for coming, I'm glad you could make it." (Said every monday of every week of every class I've had with him, 211-213).
good teacher very hard subject he makes it very clear
Dave rocks! His tests are easy if you study. I was a business student...so I know what easy is;) He helps keep lazy idoits out of engineering school.
This is by far my favorite teacher I have ever had. He is insanely good at teaching and really good at explaining complex concepts. He not only teaches physics, but how to solve problems in general, something I can really use in my career. I definately recommend Dave to anyone taking the 211 - 213 series.

What a horrible teacher. No help, great subject, okay lectures, but TOTALLY unfair
His grading isn't curved, so very hard to get good exam grades
Grading was completely unfair and the test questions weren't related to the rest of class work. The lectures weren't helpful and the instructor frequently asked questions on tests and in homework that weren't in the book or covered in class lectures. If you can take classes from a different instructor, it would be highly recommended!
good lectures, makes you feel like an idiot in office hours, not much room for error on tests...do the suggested problems!
Mixed reviews. His tests are very difficult, but you do get the material drilled into you very well. Reading quizzes every lecture keep you in class. Abrasive personality, swears a lot. Makes you feel like an idiot in lectures and on tests. Always asks, "Is this too easy? Should I skip this?" during examples, which is very annoying and wastes time.
Bannon is nuts, but everyone knows that. Likes to make people feel like idiots when they ask questions so make sure you "REVIEW THE COURSE WEBSITE" before you open your mouth haha. Other than that he's great and his examples are helpful. Class isn't hard if you just do the reading and devote time to it. Getting an A in the class isn't hard.
Horrible teacher and horrible grading. The grading is not fair and if u go and show him he agrees with the grader. His tests are nothing like lecture of the book. Prepare well because you never know how hard can be the test. Recommended take another teacher. In class his sais oh partial credit but truthfully it is all a lie.Others call him an Ass!
Dave is a good instructor & very organized. True, you can't breeze through this class, but it is physics! He can be very helpful as long as you put effort forward - he will make you feel stupid for asking a question clearly answered in the book, but doesn't it mean you are either stupid or lazy? So why should he waste his time with you then?
He gets a lot of crap from everyone, but he's actually a great teacher. Probably one of the best I've had here.
Dave is a good physics teacher, although he has a bad habit of insulting his students. The class is well-organized. It is challenging, but very doable--just don't get behind.
Though he spends much of his time in class doing seemingly useful practice problems, few relate to what is expected of students on tests. From someone that has taken 3 physics courses prior to the one I took with him, did most of the problems in the book, and did his online posted tests...This course is crap. Unfair expectations for tests.
Dave's ok. He teaches you what you need to know and more. You don't realize it until later but what you learn in this class will help you in engineering later.
Great teacher. very helpful. Has perfect handwriting and takes very good notes on board. take physics recitation along with class.
Bannon is one of those profs who wants it done his way, period. So just learn exactly how he wants homework done, to the letter (he takes points off for spelling and punctuation). The class is hard, and material can be dense at times. Labs are simple, just follow the directions for data collection and lab write-up.
Cool guy. Work hard and you will do well.
He is not the normal professor that wants to get through the term just like the students. Go to class and you will learn physics. Don't work a thousand problems outside of class and you won't do well on his tests. He is entertaining in class. Some may call him a jerk, but he is a just maintaining professionalism, one on one he is normal.
After 4 terms of Dave (211 series + 314), this is my conclusion: he has his quirks, wants things done his way, and sometimes assumes you're stupid, but he's a very clear and consistent lecturer- I had no problem learning from him. I felt the tests were fair. From what I have heard about the other profs teaching these courses, I'm glad I had Dave.
First off, he has a HUGE personality.. take that as you may. As far as his teaching ability, he is one of the clearest lecturers I've ever had. He does a very good job of dumbing down VERY difficult material to the point where you can jump in and start to progress in the difficulty of problems you're able to do..Tests are hard, but not unreasonable
No Comments
He was an okay professor, but was very arrogant. I didn't really enjoy the class, but he wasn't horrible either.
Bannon is a great professor! Just take notes and do practice problems and you'll do fine.
He makes it clear that there are no pre-reqs, but still assumes alot of knowledge. I make the Dean's List usually, not this term thanks to this guy. Lectures are not helpful; progression from lecture material to it's applied use is not clear, but assumed. Multiple choice questions are worth 10% of the test on exams. Who does that? Complete tool.
Bannon does a great job of illustrating complicated physics concepts during the short lecture period. The only complaint I have is that he tends to give suggestions like fact. For example, he will tell you to do the suggested problems in order to prepare, however I found it much, much more helpful to focus solely on concepts.
Very good at explaining concepts, good handwriting, excellent lectures. I learned a lot. A warning though the tests can be VERY hard. Every term there will be a killer midterm or final, so be sure to study a lot. Have a 3.5 GPA overall and got a B+. B-, and C (my only C in college) in the physics series.
He is one of the few professors I remember from OSU. Even though he was as some would say, harsh, that's what made his class entertaining. He made it fun.
Bannon is a great teacher. His multiple choice questions can be tricky on the exams, but if you read each question carefully, it's fine. Do all of the practice questions and repeat them until you understand them.
Dave's biggest strength is his honesty. He'll tell you straight-up that he doesn't care how much force it takes to reach escape velocity on the moon; but he does care that you learn the process for finding those answers. Read the textbook. Study and do practice problems regularly. Get help early. This class is do-able with self-discipline.
I heard horror stories about him before taking this class, but those are mostly exaggerated. Yes, for a good grade, you must work hard. Bannon ensure that you actually "learn Physics" and not "learn how to use a calculator." Bannon explains things well and ensures that if you put out the work, you will do well in his course.
He is extremely arrogant and is no help outside of class, tries to make you feel stupid. Tests are hard and he expects you spend 15+ hours a week on physics, yeah right. Do not recommend him.
Great great teacher! Some people here have said that he's arrogant, but I never got that at all. He expects you to participate and put in the work, but come on, physics is hard--what else would you expect? Tests were tough, but fair, and he was always willing to help us understand the material. He's also funny and weird--in the good way!
I took Physics over the summer. I learned a lot and changed the way I approach problem solving. Bannon is a great professor, straightforward and knowledgeable. Tests were fair if you practiced from the book and the "recommended" problems. He's not too nice of a person, but he gets the teaching job done!
Bannon is intelligent, and generally a nice guy. People complain about how tough he is, but that's crap. If you are lazy and unintelligent, it may seem that way, but as long as you put in a reasonable effort, you'll do fine. Bannon is probably the best teacher for the PH 21x series.
Bannon is a great teacher. You learn a lot of the material. His test are quite difficult though. Strongly suggest you take it with Bannon rather than the other teacher. All of my friends switched and like Bannon a lot more.
Good prof, terrible person. I really dont think he has a heart. Missed getting a C by less than 5 points and wouldnt help me out at all. Even though I wrote down the correct formulas and didnt get points for them. Lectures are easy to follow. But what an arrogant person.
i really love the way dave treats people in class. especially when he calls out people who are DC's for using there cell phones
Before this class I always thought that there was some critical mass for ego, after which the universe would implode. Professor Bannon is living proof that this is false. Loves to talk down to students, extremely arrogant, classic superiority complex. Class was boring and I found his style difficult to follow.
Bannon is a great professor. He made something very difficult (quantum mechanics) clear. He has hard tests, but if you do the homework and the reading you will do fine. I've found that people who don't like Bannon tend to be the ones who fail. He is not the least bit arrogant. He expects a lot from students like any professor should.
This class is very tough, and if you don't keep up with the reading and do the practice problems you wont do well on his tests. He is a very good teacher however he makes his tests tough so make sure you go over the suggested practice problems in each chapter.
Bannon is a great professor. By far the best in the physics department that I've encountered so far. He expects a lot from his students, but I think that's realistic for a teacher. Make sure that you do things HIS way and you'll do great.
I believe his midterms and final are fair. i depend heavily on doing end of chapter problems as much as i can. he tells you the answer format for his midterms and final which makes it very easy to get partial credit. it's no an easy class but he is the best to teach it.
Seems like a good guy, but likes to hear himself talk. I mostly looked in the book and memorized formulas, even though he tells you not to. The class is much easier if you remember the formulas instead of hunting for them on the tests. TAs don't care what you start with, as long as you have all three steps that Bannon talks about.
Dave rocks. Plain and simple. If i got stuck with another professor, I would sit in during his lectures too
These Bannon Bashers on here don't know what they're talking about. Dave is patient and super helpful in person, and in front of a class. Glad I was able to have him as a professor
Bannon is a good teacher. If you learn alot from lecture he is your best bet. If you prefer to learn from the book take someone else whose tests are more straightforward because Bannon loves to throw curveballs but they are manageable. Best bet take demaree and sit in on bannon.
I've had Bannon for two terms (PH 212 and 213). The classes are hard, but Bannon is great. Straight up, no BS. He doesn't sugar coat it or hold your hand, but he's very helpful, never makes fun if you ask questions, and is a fair grader. If you "just want an A," you are in the wrong major probably, but if you want to learn it, Bannon is the best!
The ONLY good thing about him is that his tests are extremely fair. Everything else about him and the class is downright terrible. He says one thing, but does another. He makes students feel stupid when they ask questions. As much as I hate him, if you have to take this godforsaken class, take it from this guy b/c the test are reasonable.
The guy rocks! He's one of the only 'teacher' teachers at OSU, as in not a researcher that talks emptily to a room of 500 students. He is lively and smart. Take him over any of the other 200 teachers and take him for 314. He's great.
Some professors are known for really throwin the book at ya, but Dave will literally throw a book at you. He's a zany guy who is really good at his job. Don't miss out
Very good teacher. Hard, but very organized.
If you want to cry immensely take physics from David T. Bannon. He is rude, arrogant, and literally refers to himself as a mathematician and musician. No buddy, you're a loser. I received an A in 211 from another prof. and a B+ in 212 with Bannon, but 213 stuff gets crazy. He often puts down students and makes them feel unintelligent. Avoid.
He is actually an ok teacher and is helpful if you talk to him personally (he will explain things clearly). However, he can be rather abrasive in the classroom and come off as arrogant or downright insulting. Not sure why that is, because he doesn't seem that way talking one-on-one. Personality interferes with class experience.
Not an easy prof, but if you're looking for a career in science, his tests will prepare you well. Take him if you want to learn something. His class websites are more helpful then you think..it is very beneficial to go over his policies on tests and homework, you can find yourself getting free points. this goes for 211-213 as well
Bannon is an interesting but good professor. He assigns reasonable amounts (1-4hrs closer to 1) of homework and his tests are fair but definitely test your knowledge. He has all of his notes pre-prepared and it is valuable to print them off and mark them up. Overall great prof, highly recommended. And don't let his condescending attitude scare you.
Take Bannon. He is one crazy dude. He wants you to learn and has office hours 3 days a week so this class is what you make of it. But he hates when people have their phones out, he will call you out and ask you to leave. Don't be that guy
Bannon comes off as arrogant and intimidating upon first seeing him. However, he's very helpful during office hours and knows what he's doing. Just stick with it and you'll learn a lot from taking physics from this guy. Beware: his tests are very hard!
Bannon's one crazy guy. He makes his tests extremely hard to force you to learn the material well. I failed both midterms, but still ended up with a B- in the end. But then again, I studied really hard for the final. He's an ok lecturer. Just be prepared to spend a TON of time on this class if you're not an ECE major.
Class average on midterm; F. Apparently, like myself, everyone else though this class would be easy (like 90% of the classes at OSU). Nope. You won't pass unless you know the material like the back of your hand.
This guy is nuts, and it doesn't make class enjoyable. That said, he is a decent teacher and his tests while hard, are fair. The grade scale is much better than a lot of classes to balance out his hard tests, and if you put effort in, you will pass.
In my opinion, the exams were pretty fair and honestly easier than most of the other exams I've seen. While he is pretty nuts, he's still a pretty enjoyable teacher and can teach well. Had more homework than expected.
One of the best instructors I had. His class is tough, but you will learn if you out in the effort. Office hours are where he really shines. He will spend the time to make sure you understand. He even gladly answered questions about other classes. Expect to get to (or have to) really fine tune your algebra and double checking your work.
I took PH211, 212, and 213 with him a few terms ago. He comes across as a bit arrogant, but his lectures are excellent and he knows what he's talking about. When he insists on using symbolic solve or the like, listen to him, it will serve you well. Tests are moderate difficulty, and he happily throws old ones at you. HW is pretty typical.
Bannon is very arrogant, and beware he hates cell phones. His tests are ridiculously difficult and he doesn't curve them, I definitely recommend a taking a different class if Bannon is the only one teacher you can take for the term.
I definitely did not attend enough of the lectures, labs and studios as I should of. Had I, I would have gotten a B easily. I suggest YouTube how to do problems for the tests. You don't learn much during lecture although he does take clicker points which you will need come the end of term.
If you already know physics, his teaching is good and it's pretty easy. If you don't, READ THE BOOK. And read it before lecture. If you do, it will be much easier for you. If you don't, you will get left in the dust honestly, and then blame him for not teaching well. There is too much information to cover only in lecture.
Bannon is too egotistical to be a good teacher. He treats students as if they are lesser than him and doesn't create an environment where learning is enjoyable. He often describes the course as different because it is "not a physics course but a course that teaches you how to think," despite the fact that it is similar to most other math classes.
If you actually take the class seriously, there won't be any problems. Do the homework. Study. Show up to class. There really isn't anything more to it. If you're having trouble with the material despite studying, just go to office hours. Bannon is a fantastic lecturer who is EXTREMELY willing to help you with any problems you have along the way.
Once you get your midterm grades back, which are usually around 50-60% (the average), he'll spend 15-20 minutes ranting about the grades and how you should have done better. He can get distracted if he feels he was disrespected and go off on tangents. If you want to do well in this class you must do extra problems from the text.
I took PH 211-213 with him. I think that physics, no matter what, is going to be hard. If you study for the tests, show up to class, do the homework, and keep up with what's going on, you'll have no problems. He has a great sense of humor and has a no phone or laptop policy which eliminates distractions. Only downside is having 3 hour labs.
This class was really hard. A couple of times he would glaze over topics because a majority of the class already knew the topic.... I did not and therefore had a hard time..
Found his tests to be better than Jansen's and he is way better than Coffin (goes without saying). Yeah, Bannon has his faults, but considering the alternatives, you are better off with Bannon. And if you're an engineering or physics major in OSU, he's barely half as bad as what you'll get later on. Trust me.
Physics 213 was definitely no walk in the park, but having dave as a teacher made this class much better than I was expecting it to be. His tests are difficult, but they are what TESTS should be. TESTING your knowledge. I personally found him to be a MUCH MUCH better teacher than Jansen, so if you learn best through lecture, definitely take dave!
If there is something to remember Bannon by, it's that you don't use your phone lol. DO NOT take his lectures for granted as they are your key to success in this class. READ the textbook because that's how you understand his lectures. He drops subtle hints on what are on tests and his tests are difficult for a reason.
Honestly this is the best you're going to get. He's weird, but very manageable. Great teacher, I feel like I learn a lot in each lecture and studio. Chose to take him for the rest of the series due to how good he lectures. Tests are difficult, but he teaches well enough to make up for it.
Very strict and does not mess around, but you'll learn the content. It's worth it to learn the content for your major than to take an easy teacher. Bannon is a solid choice.
Quite a Guy
Solid choice. Very strict and can be quite rude in-person, but a good teacher. Would take again for physics series, better than other options. Tests are difficult but predictable and fair. Provides extensive formula sheet.
Bannon can be a little intimidating on the first day, but after a few classes you realize he really cares about physics and teaching. This class is easy to survive as long as you read each chapter, complete all the homework, and go to office hours after each exam to learn what you did wrong. You can usually get a few more points this way too.
Great guy, kinda strict but an amazing teacher.
Having never taken a physics class before, I was a bit nervous going into 211 but I'm very happy I took it with David. He can be intimidating and harsh, but he explains stuff very well and he will help you as long as you try and work to learn the coursework. Some people don't like his style of teaching, but it was a perfect fit for me personally.
He'll threaten to cancel class if no one asks questions but will also try to make you feel like an idiot if you ask questions. He will 100% dock off points for the littlest issues he can find (ie if you don't put "x5, y4, z?" ) on the homework or midterms. Just if you take his class, be EXTREMELY through with each of the steps.
Bannon is by no means a bad professor. He has strict grading policies, and is very formulaic in how he wants you to do each problem. The best way to learn this is to learn it from day one and not wait till you get marked down. Physics is no breeze, and Bannon is a solid choice
