A great teacher if you wait the class out
This guy is the most amazing english teacher I've ever had. I love going to his class.

Great teacher overall...made class interesting, highly knowledgeable, and one of the best English teachers I've had at BCCC.
Hes intimidating at first, and half the class drops, but hes easy. Dude, youre getting a B.
An honest teacher, once you learn how he operates.
Mr.Bates is one of the BEST professors at BCCC. He has super-interesting material, he makes class fun, and he is challenging (in a good way). I HIGHLY recommend this teacher to students who are motivated. I'm never gonna forget Mr.Bates!
Have an open mind and be ready to think and question things. He touches on a lot of real life issues and ties everything in to what you are reading. He is an easy grader, but more importantly, you will leave his class a better rounded person. He is GREAT teacher.
This teacher bar far was one of the hardest teachers I ever had. You have to do 3, 10 page research papers, a speech and 2 tests and you also have to read 4 books, plue vaious other long reading assignments. I do not recommend this teacher to anyone. Very hard and very demanding. The teacher even made one of my classmates cry.
I realized going into this class that there was going to be lots of reading and papers that would need to be done for this class (it is lit...want to cry about the papers, take a gym class)but Dr. Bates really makes you change your vision of a story. This class is definitely for the thick skinned though. Dr. Bates really gives a mental work out!
The Lit.class that Professor Bates teachers broadend my horizon on a lot of things from theology to philosophy. Professor Bates is a excellent professor and is doing a remarkable job.
BORING! But I learned there are 137 tiles on the ceiling. I swear this man breathes sleeping gas. Bring a pillow...in fact your pillow will need a pillow! Nice helpful guy but instant amnesia.
Prof. Bates is unique. His statements are sometimes arguable, yet they instigate you to disagree, i.e. participate in a discussion. Isn't that the goal of (almost) every teacher?
I was expecting this class to be brutally boring, but Dr. Bates actually makes it interesting. I look forward to it each week.

WOW! This professor is AMAZING! He never makes us feel stupid, even if we ask REALLY stupid questions! He is always open to our ideas, and offers suggestions on how to expand on our thinking. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS PROFESSOR!
I really enjoyed his teaching style. He was upfront with exactly what he wanted out of students' term papers. You knew exactly what the tests were going to be like. Very helpful. Overall, the best English teacher I've ever had.
Great guy to be aaround, made class fun to be in (even though i dont know if he intended it to be that way). I gave him a "3" on ease because you gotta be ready to do alot of reading and writing. The tests were fairly easy (even though i got better grades on my papers). I highly recommend him as long as your willing to at least do some work.
Professor Bates is extremely knowledgeable about American Lit. and history. He brought a very well rounded lecture and articulated his points well. He has several degrees and supplies a broad understanding of the material that was read in class, in turn a vast base of knowledge was presented to the class. We had interesting, stimulating assignments
I thought this class was extremely helpful in understanding our society today and in the past. Professor Bates is an outstanding professor, who has a very keen way of teaching while keeping the class intense. The best educator I have ever had!!!
One of the best instructors I've had the pleasure with which to work. Bates has a great ability to tie what seemed like disparate works together. He gets his students to work together and he has a general caring attitude. He is a good man and a very talented and effective teacher!
Very informative class on how to read between the lines when reading a story or a poem. Besides focusing on the material, it was important to him to teach life learning lessons too which was cool. This man displays that he cares about his students; their just not a body taking up space. I would buy him a coke anyday!
Professor Bates is a wonderful teacher. He is fair, honest and knows his subject inside out. He opened up a world of literature to me and I will be forever grateful. He is professional, makes you work hard and teaches with flair and style. He showed me what a teacher should be......
One of the best professor's at BCCC. I looked forward to every class. This is no easy 'A'. There is a good deal of reading, 2 tests, 1 presentation, a term paper and he doesn't cut corners in the summer! But he is worth it! David brings this subject to life and will hold your attention throughout the semester.
Simply the Best teacher at bucks. Dr.Bates kept my interest the entire class, every class. Definately the teacher to take if you are open minded
WORST TEACHER EVER DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
My first impression of Professor Bates left me a bit anxious, since his authority seemed quite clear from the start. Not sure if I wanted to remain in the class after my first paper, I decided to stay. I am a determined person, and David made my stay worth it, for all I learned in that classroom. I will never forget it. Thanks David for everything!
Professor Bates is an excellent teacher. If you think you will not read or write papers, take another class. This teacher loves to teach for the sake of teaching. He makes you think about alot of issues in regard to your life as well as the material presented. He is very open minded, very down to earth, and a great listener. GREAT CLASS!!!
Expects alot from student. Alot of writing, 3 essays per semester(8 pages each). The work is worth what you learn. Very intersting teacher. Would take his class again.
Strange guy, but liked the way he made me think about the texts we read in class. Don't take him unless you love the subject!
The best professor I have had in my college career. His way of presenting the subject matter, along with questioning your own beliefs was amazing. I would recommend taking any class he is teching. Actually just sitting down and talking with him for a while would be worth it.
One of the best teachers I have ever had.
The guy's a really good teacher. You'll learn something, if that's what you want. And he'll help you to do that. But if you just want a grade to get out of the class, you probably don't want to do this. There will be a lot of work.
Dr. Bates is an awesome professor!! He is funny, nice and works with you to get your work done right. There is alot of reading and work, but all you have to do is put in your time and effort and you will be fine. PICK HIM!!!
Bates is the best professor I've ever had. If you really want to learn, take his class. But if you just want an easy class then don't. Alot of reading and 3 8pg. essays. This class is definitely worth the effort. Bates will change the way you see the world and you will grow as a student and as a person. Thank you Bates for being an awesome teacher!
This was probably the best class I have ever taken. He taught me life lessons through American Literature. He made the themes of literature interesting, we had to critically think and consider our choices in life. He definitely is one of the best professors in colleges today. Definitely has a passion for students and education.
I couldn't stay in the class because of time problems, but I liked him a lot. I had a hard time understanding the material, but when I would ask him, he was pretty helpful. His way of presenting the literature was very unique. He likes to hear himself talk, but most of the things he says are interesting, so it's not bad. I definitely recommend him.
I've graduated and teach. This class represents my continuing education requirement. Bates assumes an academic model, where everything is open for discussion. That can be intimidating for someone who's never questioned their basic beliefs. The class was invogorating and insightful. But some would rather plain vinalla when offered Cherry Garcia
I also had him for Comp111. He is the kind of teacher who makes class interesting. If you do not understand what he is trying to prove, then you might find him offensive, but ask and he will always clarify. He has a reason for everything he does, and as far as I could tell, they are good reasons. You cannot help but to learn from him. Great guy
After the first day I was sure I would drop. I didnt, and couldnt be happier. He is one of my favorite teachers of all time. I surely will never forget his class. Although he claims that "All women are fudamentally evil" he is a very intellectual, knowledgeable, and fascinating man. This class was more life lessons than english.
He is an awesome teacher. Thinks he is always right when sometimes he is not, but he is a cool guy. Id like to smoke a blunt with him and pick his brains.
PROFESSOR BATES MADE A SOMEWHAT DRY SUBJECT INTERESETING. I ENJOYED HIS CLASS AND LEARNED THINGS THAT NOT ONLY PERTAIN TO ENGLISH BUT TO REAL LIFE. I WOULD RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE.
Prof.Bates challenged me in ways I never thought. He takes American Lit class and makes it more than memorizing writers' works. He makes it transcend to the real world.Your view on society and everyday life will not be the same after his class. He will also be willing to write insightfull student recommendation letters for grad school applications.
I was very skeptical in taking this course. A former student highly recommended him. After the first class I knew it I would be a challenged, but in a good way. I found him to be a well rounded, intelligent and highly educated individual who opened up a new perspective of Lit for me. I now have an interest in Amer Lit.
bates is an EXTREMELY HARD GRADER...he knows what he is talking about when it comes to writing, but because he "knows what he is talking about" you'll probably get a lower grade than you expect
Prof. Bates is the best prof. I've ever had. I've taken him for both Comp. and Am. Lit. He is demanding, and he does expect you to both think, consider, and reconsider, but I'd recommend him to anyone who's actually interested in reading the texts and doing the work. If you don't make the effort then you won't understand what he's talking about.
I highly recommend Dr. Bates. He is very knowledgeable and puts an extra effort into making his lectures unique and interesting which is why it was a pleasure being his student. Also, Dr. Bates is a fair grader who loves teaching English and is willing to help his students whenever needed. A+
David Bates teaches his students to stare the universe in the eye with unwavering clarity. He employs graphic knowledge of the world while presenting an approach on how to combat the atrocities of our every day lives. David's understanding of the world remains unparalleled. My writing style improved immensely. He is the best professor I've had.
Professor Bates is by far the best teacher I have ever had. His passion for teaching is refreshing compaired to the lack luster preformances of other teachers at this college. Be prepaired to read the texts! There is no getting around the core readings, if you expect to receive a good grade. Prof Bates has turned me on to reading again. THANKS!!!
I was fortunate to have Dr. Bates as my professor for COMP 111. Traditionally, for me, literature was not one of my favorite subjects, however, my thoughts have now considerably changed since completing his course. Dr. Bates is a caring professor and stimulated creativity and interest through various teaching techniques such as, playing out plots of various stories in a m
A PROFESSOR BATES CLASS IS MONEY WELL SPENT!Everytrhing he teaches has an immediate-pratical application as soon as you walk outside the classroom.Whether it's academic writing, critical thinking or life lessons-YOU'LL BENEFIT!When the pupil is ready[to learn]the master will appear.ENROLL IN A BATES CLASS BEFORE HE RETIRES!It is a great investment.
Mr. Bates is a very intelligent person. Awesome at going into great detail about books required to be read in class.
Professor Bates offers an eye opening look into the world through the selected text. Well known authors' works are examined in such a way that it strips to the raw truth about people and how they function within their environment. Right and wrong are not relevant - only the truth. His teaching style is stern but fair. You will learn if you so choos
Prof Bates is an extremely knowledgeable guy. He knows what he is talking about. His class is hard, but if you put in the effort and ask him for help, he will teach you new ways to really improve your writing. If you're actually looking for a class to get something out of, I suggest you take him.
Mr. Bates is a very smart man. He knows a lot about a lot of stuff but he is very hard. He's kind of crazy. I dont really reccommend him. And if you do, you have to work extremely hard for your grade.
I did not want to take Lit II but had to. Take at night Best class I had. Bates keep it interesting. I learned about people and how we act and look at the world. You will get alot from this class that you never expected to get.
Very knowledgable and interesting. His class requires a great deal of work but I found it rewarding. He's very intelligent and helpful. I was afraid to take this class but am glad I did. I would highly recommend him.
Bates was the most influential professor I have ever had. I had him for literature and he opened up my mind on so many levels. to this day I take the lessons he taught us in class and use them on a daily basis. The material was very enlightening and he kept the 3 hr night class extremely interesting! GREAT teacher and I HIGHLY recommend him to all!
Professor Bates is one of the best professors/teachers I have ever had. He has five degrees, all of which he utilizes to teach his class to the best of his ability. He treats his students as adults. The assignments are clear. If you do the work & THINK you will do well & LEARN!I am putting together a petition to extend his class into the summer.
Bates was the best teacher I have ever had. As long as you do the work your in for a fun semester.
Probably the best professor at Bucks. Dr Bates is highly educated, compassionate and irreverently fair to all his students. The class is structured for the students to Learn and improve their writing skills. Bates expects alot from his class and takes his lectures very seriously. Show up willing to work and you will do well.
I am writing this in China, bored on a saturday and willing to kill some time. i took Bates for American Lit After 1865 back in 2004, i expected a dull, dry course. nothing could be further from Bates' method. all the above ratings are true to the word. he is the Noam Chomsky of Community Colleges. He will rock your world!
A++ Top notch professor and class. Highly recommend. One of the most interesting that I have ever taken (140 col crd, 84 law crd). He makes the material both interesting and relevant to modern life. This course will give you a greater understanding/appreciation of literature, as well as what it means to be a human being faced with life choices.
The best professor I've ever had: kind, caring, insightful.
I never envisioned a Literature class that I looked forward to attending. Professor Bates however made this happen. The material was not dry and was relayed to us students in an easily understandable manner. His knowledge of literature and history helped bring the class to life and make the material relevant to daily life.
Professor Bates is by far the best teacher at Bucks. His lectures were far from boring, and I came out of this class with so much more than I intended to take from a Comp class. He is so interesting, and as long as you do the work expected of you, and read the material, you will not regret taking this class.I reccomend him to everyone!
Highly recommended. One of the best I ever had (4yrs coll. 3yrs grad). Fall 09 course was super. Very interesting readings, which Bates makes relevant to modern existence. Lit is examined in light of the questions of what it means to be human and the life choices that we make. Innovative, supportive teaching. Course broadens life perspective.
I have been attending BCCC for 2 years and of all the professors I have had Prof.David Bates is absolutely the very best! Explained everything completely and thoroughly, handed out detailed outlines of what is to be on the papers and is very down to earth. If you are not a fan of English and writing papers Prof Bates is the way to go. He is the man
Prof bates is a great teacher. Whoever wrote that he made a student cry is prob lying because they didnt do so well in his class. I had encountered some very trying family issues while in his class. He worked with me and was very understanding of my situation. I can not stress enough to take his class. If you work with him he will work with you. A+
If you want to learn, you want to be in one of Professor Bates? classes! His knowledge of literature and historical events is absolutely amazing. Assignments are challenging and very rewarding. Great choices of short stories and novels. He?s available outside of class hours and responds to emails. He is definitely, the best Comp teacher at BCCC!
Its refreshing to find a teacher who genuinely cares & interested in helping. Grades reflect what u put in. Ive never though myself to be very intelligent, but I left this class w/greater confidence & all A's for the 1st time. He sees potential & helps you see it, for that Im grateful & setting larger goals. He has endless knowledge and information
David was unquestionably one of the best professors I have had the pleasure of working with during my academic career. He presented a challenging course while maintaining the interest of all students. A welcoming atmosphere made COMP 111 a worthwhile experience where any student attending would learn the necessary skills to succeed in the future.
Professor Bates was a good teacher. He helped me pick a college. He helped me with the applications. He wrote a recommendation. Who knew transferring was such a process. I guess I'm saying he helped me. That's what I remember.
Professor Bates is The BEST!He is extremely knowledgeable and is genuinely interested in seeing each of his students succeed! His class is very challenging but he really made me realize my true potential! I received all A's for the first time in my life! A great class with an amazing man!! Thank you!
If you want to learn, you want to be in one of Professor Bates? classes! His knowledge of literature and historical events is absolutely amazing. The assignments are challenging. Great choices of stories and novels to read. He?s available outside of class hours to answer questions and responds to emails. Definitely, the best Comp teacher at BCCC!
Dr.Bates is an intangible asset to BCCC! He has to be one of the most "customer- service-oriented educators there is! He's cultivated, authoritative, and willful; most definitely someone to emulate- a positive male role model-a hero! The man's legacy is one of empowerment. Ask him about: Gramsci,Hegemony,& his time at the Post Office-you'll see
Professor Bates is the best teacher I have had at Bucks County Community College. He is always willing to help out. He wrote me a reccomendation for a scholarship that I ended up winning! Take his class! He is definitly the best there is!
I was always excited to go to class, couldn't wait to hear his lectures.... He is one of the professors at this school that is an actual teacher. Alot of teachers just read from books and power point.. He makes u understand everything in very creative ways. The only problem is that I wish he taught more classes that way I could learn so much more from him.
Just an amazing teacher. You might think it's impossible to write, he just makes it soo much easier and clearer. You can't do it without him. just amazing.
Amazing teacher... He makes you think like you've never thought before but in a way that won't kill you or hurt your head! He really cares how you do in class and makes sure you understand everything! Just an amazing teacher! God bless him!
Before taking the class I had no interest in American lit and didn't have much appreciation or understanding of it. Now I can't wait to read more Hemingway and Frost. Professor Bates opened up a whole new world to me. Along with his excellent teaching style, he kept me captivated in every class, some nights I didn't want to leave and end the discus
Professor Bates is the most memorable instructor I have ever had. Beyond the open class discussions where he would make class material crystal clear, Bates would also dedicate time to individually help each of his students. Professor Bates clearly has an applied interest in those he educates, and understands where the needs of each student differ.
I greatly enjoyed & learned so much in Prof Bates' class! His degree in history affords him the ability to give context to the works we learned. I feel fortunate for having such a knowledgeable & caring professor. He truly wants his students to learn & is always available during his office hours. Please take a course with him! You won't regret it!
Professor Bates is awesome. He is incredibly knowledgeable (having several degrees helps!), but does not lord it over his students; anything that is suggested by a student is never rejected. Professor Bates will work with the statement until understanding is reached. He is courteous, fun, and helpful. If you can, take classes with this man.
Bates was one of the most intellectual teachers I have ever had. His lectures always had us thinking. It was always more then just a literature class. I think everyone would highly benefit from the lectures and guidance of Prof. Bates.
Bates did a wonderful job explaining the literature we read as well as what he was grading within the papers. He assisted in the evolution of not only our paper writing abilities, but in our moral and ethical values through which we view society. He makes everyone think about what it means to be human. I took him for another class, too.
This was my second time taking Bates. He was just as helpful and engaging in class. When students answer, even if they are wrong, he can continue the discussion by incorporating the comment and still get his point across. He is quick to respond to e-mails. Definitely would recommend. His background in history assists with the study of literature.
Dr. Bates is for sure up on my top three list of great professors that I have ever had. Not only is he intellectual but is also very helpful when it comes to making sure his students understand what is trying to be said in a fashion that we wouldn't normally. This class makes you think and anyone who is lucky enough to take his class, should!
David Bates is by far the best Professor I have ever had. I came to the class just to hear his lectures which were both helpful and extremely enjoyable. David is easily approachable and seems to care for almost all his students. If you enjoy discussing some of the deepest issues and beliefs then do yourself a favor and do not miss out on his class.
I just finished taking this class with Dr. Bates for the fall semester. He is a very helpful and understanding individual. As a professor, he inspires his students. With his extensive knowledge and experience, Dr. Bates is able to effectively lecture and educate his students on many issues, which extend father than the class lesson. Dr. Bates has t
Dr. bates is very helpful, understanding, and inspiring. With his extensive knowledge and experience,he effectively lecturse/educates his students. Dr. Bates has taught at many schools& has acquired multiple degrees. He taught our class how to properly format and write research papers, reached out to us,& graded fairly.
Dynamic.intuitive. intelligent.caring.patient. multi-faceted.intriguing. enlivening.encouraging.has profound knowledge of history, and critical analysis. his lesson reach beyond the confines of the classroom. undeniably the best prof i've ever had the pleasure of learning with. creative, effective, personable, Bates is all of these things and more!
David Bates is, without a doubt, one of the best professors I have had during my college career. I took American Literature with him this semester (Fall 2010) and he has helped me to thoroughly understand the texts. If you have the chance, take a class with him. It will open your eyes to themes and viewpoints that you won't learn about elsewhere!
Professor Bates made my class awesome! A great teacher, if you have the chance, definitely take the opportunity to study under him. Can't stress enough his knowledge about the subjects he teaches, I left the class a different person than when I entered. A much better person!
Took in fall 2010. Takes attendance only to learn names. Course straight forward if you attend class. Extremely intelligent teacher. He is kind, helpful and teaches a unique course. Take the time to listen to him because he makes the course VERY interesting. If you have to take a lit course or an elective, would be foolish not to take him.
Professor Bates happens to be one of the best teachers I have ever taken during college. He is a very bright individual who really cares about his students getting the most out of his class and succeeding in everyway possible. Would highly recommend this teacher.
Mr. Bates is a one of a kind teacher and he will make an impression on you. He is a very bright and intelligent man and finds great joy in class discussion and helping others to do their best. The material we go over is very in depth and challenging, but he is always there to guide everyone along. You couldnt ask for anything more from a professor
I can only tell that this was one of the most enjoyable and eye-opening classes I've ever taken. Professor Bates teaches like nobody else. It's a pity I'm done with Bucks and have to transfer -- I would have definitely taken his other classes if I've known before what a wonderful teacher he is.
Mr.Bates is a great teacher. I would have never imagined I would learn so much in a Composition class. He brings so much more to the subject, all to make us better students and people. The work is challenging but if you put in the time and effort it will all pay off in the end. Mr. Bates is very accessible to his students and wants us to succeed.
Great class to take. Dr. Bates strong point is making the literature relevant to today and to you. He is accessible for help and is an excellent advisor. Highly recommend.
Dr. Bates takes literature and makes you feel like it was written for you. He takes something written hundreds of years ago and relates to your life right now. I wanted to go to class every week, and was eager to hear what he had to say, and to talk about the lesson during, and after the class. I learned lessons i will take with me always.
Dr. Bates helped my wife to a Drexel scholarship for the Fall; she wasn't even in the class. Thanks.
Dr Bates teaches in a profound manner that keeps you eager for more insight. The extensive reading is enjoyable as he relates the text's in ways that move and shake a new found apreciation for Literature and the lessons portayed. Dr Bates was also very helpful in guiding me through the transfer process.
awesome guy. relates the materials and characters in books ot students in the class.s compares how plot in books is occuring virtually in his students lives.
Quiet fellow helpful interesting a lot of work
Helpful pleasant smart
If you are looking for a class will blow your mind, look no further. Dr. Bates will teach you everything you want to know about the literature, and much more. Many of the concepts can be hard to grasp, but he is extremely patient and willing to put in the time so that everyone understands. My favorite teacher in all of my 6 years of college.
Professor Bates is a very good teacher. However, this is NOT an easy A class. We had to read two 400 pg books along with many short stories and poems. There was a midterm, a final, an oral presentation, and an 8 page paper. Though I learned a lot, I do not suggest taking this class if you are taking a lot of other classes and working.
A lot of work, and I'm not good at it. The course probably won't transfer. Good teacher, but I see this as a waste of my time.
I would recommend Dr. David Bates to anyone interested in gaining knowledge in english and composition preparation. Although sometimes Bates can come off as a hard teacher, he would do anything to make the writing process an exciting and easy experience.
A Dr. Bates American Literature class is extremely difficult! There's over 600 pages of required reading, a group project, a two hour long (EACH!) mid-term and final, a group project, and a 10+ page "Reaction Paper" due at the end in addition to the two-hour final! I would recommend taking only one other class while you're taking his Am.Lit.2.
BATES IS BRILLIANT. He's the prof that always stays with you, a real life Morrie Schwartz. He is passionate, well informed and cares very much for his students. If you pay attention in his class you WILL come away being able to write a polished collegiate paper. If you struggle with writing/lit, then use office hours he always helps never judges.
Bates is a really good guy. His class is kinda intense, you have to be willing to earn a grade and want to learn something. he is a really intelligent guy and even if you dont like the class, youll learn alot from him. He appreciates hard working students and will help you in every way he can. great guy.
Dr. Bates is extremely passionate about what he teaches and his lessons can almost always be applied to everyday life. His class requires A LOT of reading. Students taking his class should be willing to learn and ready to absorb a substantial amount of information.
Dr Bates is wonderful professor, he is well educated and informed. He is extremely passionate when it comes to American lit, Upon the first day of his class I was nervous about the work load. I am not a good writer nor do I enjoy writing, by the end of the semester I learned how to compose a research paper and got a B in the class. He is amazing.
Bates invites you to think. Bates will provocatively inspire you and challenge preconceptions of not just literature and language, but of history and human nature at large. Bates is difficult and at times, cryptic in his methods: But this is how the world speaks. So, he prepares us not just to analyze writing but to see life as it is in reality.
Wasn't a fan. His tactic of "motivating" you is talking about how uneducated you are compared to his "x" amount of doctorate degrees. I love writing and reading but I actually got anxiety before entering his classroom. Wouldn't recommend him.
Bates is an interesting character. He is one of those professors who like to try to intimidate his students - preferred method being listing his educational experience and degrees. However, he does really make some interesting points about the material you're supposed to read, though don't expect to talk to him about anything other than that.
He talked to me. That helped. Most don't
Mr. Bates is passionate about teaching his students and seeing them succeed. Students not only learn about American Literature, but the historical perspective and context in which it was written. He incorporates many life lessons, encouraging students to reflect on their interactions with others, to be descent human beings. Worth taking!
This professor has changed my life. He will cause you to discover potential you never knew you had.
Absolutely loved Bates, he made me motivated to write, and actually enjoy it because he showed me my potential. I would recommend him a million times over!
Dr. Bates is way out dated in Education. If you came into class in a good mood, you will leave depressed based on is off topic tirades. He will mark any written paper up with what he believes in, giving you no freedom of expression. Don't take his class.
Composition 111 with Dr. Bates is a very useful class. The course requires a fair amount of reading, but you will ultimately walk away with a better understanding of reality. Topics covered in class are very deep, but undoubtedly very true. Taking this course will either lead to enlightenment or frustration, depending on YOUR willingness to try.
He wrote me a recommendation. Got me into Aria. Go to Dr. Bates when you don't know where else to go.
Many years after I last sat in his class I am thankful my time spent under Prof. David Bates' tutelage. Prof. Bates taught me new ways to approach and interpret literature and in turn life itself. I worked harder in his class than in any other. It was worth it. No other prof. in my experience extended himself to his students as generously as he.
Dr. Bates helped me transfer to the University of Pittsburgh. He was there to help with every step of the transfer process, and always made an honest effort. Definitely the most helpful and insightful professor I've ever come across.
Professor Bates was a very good teacher. Although the topics covered could be challenging, if you put in the work you will reap the rewards. He is always willing to help you with papers or assignments. However, through his help he won't give you the answer, but he will give you the guidance to find the correct answer on your own.
Although I did not pass his class due to lack of determination, Dr. Bates is a must take! I took him in the Spring and his lessons on life, the college experience, and helpfrrrullness all around has helped shape me into the person I am today. He truly helped me realize I was living in a facade. Lastly, he most certainly helps your writing quality.
The problem I had with Bates is that his instructions are not clear. It's like he expects you to just know. Also, he took up so much time talking about one book/paper, the other papers were rushed. Very soft spoken so hard to hear, intimidating presence but he's happy to help. Gives poor feedback on papers, but will explain better in person.
Really wants you to do well in his class and be successful in the future as well
The class was very challenging, but was great, and I got all As on my assignments. English is not my first language, but Professor Bates showed me that I am capable of doing it (and doing it well!!) He is ALWAYS there to answer your questions and to help you with your thesis, intro, etc. Bates is very smart and an awesome teacher!
Dr. Bates enriches your life with his lectures. He inspires his students to excel in everything they do, he treats his students with high respect, by showing high interest in helping them, and always being available to answer their questions. I am very grateful for the opportunity I had to be in his class, and for everything I learned from him.
Greatest man I've ever met. Therefore, obviously the best professor I have ever had the privilege to take. Helpful inside the class, and outside the classroom. You have to take Bates if you are attending Bucks County Community College.
Most inspiring man I have ever met. Honestly, best professor ever. Loves teaching and is passionate with everything he talks about. MUST TAKE.
Best professor I've had, Bates utilizes his lectures to both teach the material at hand & to teach important life lessons of extreme value outside the academic world. Instructions are cut & dry, assignments are clear & easy to understand. Easy to approach, flexible, & always willing to lend a hand. Highly recommended; work hard & be rewarded.
I would recommend taking Professor Bates. He did much more than simply teach writing; he taught amazing life lessons. His lectures always kept my attention. Although there is a big workload, he tells you what he wants and as long as you do that, you'll pass. There aren't many professors like Professor Bates, so I recommend taking him.
A good professor. If you're expecting to learn how to become a better writer; you won't learn during class lectures. However, if you attend his office hours or stay after class, he's willing to pass his knowledge on. Overall he's a fair grader; but a tough one and nit picks. If you're expecting an easy writing class don't take him; you won't last.
Bates was the most compelling teacher I've ever had. He taught me more about life in 12 weeks than I'd learned in 23 years. However, his class is for SERIOUS STUDENTS ONLY. I received an A for the course but had to work for it. If you're looking for an easy A, look elsewhere. But if you want a truly amazing teacher, Bates is a must take.
Dr. Bates helped me tremendously. I had taken COMP111 twice before I took it with him and failed both times. This was my last chance. Dr. Bates helped me the whole way through, he believed in me. I wrote my papers early so he could go over them and it was super helpful. I not only passed but I passed with a B+! Thank you Dr. Bates!
Dr. Bates is by far among the very best professors I've had. He's teaching skills has helped me to excel in writing at Temple Univeristy and I am very grateful to have had him as my English professor at BCCC. I've graduated from BCCC in sprigs of 2014. PLEASE TAKE HIM IF YOU HABE THE OPPERTUNITY!! I promise you will not regret it. Thanks Dr. Bates!
By far the best professor.
Awesome teacher! He keeps the class engaged while handling the material in a fun way. He is determined to see you succeed not only in class but also in life. I would recommend him to anyone. I am not usually a fan of Literature but he made me a fan.
very tough grader
On the third day of class, while answering a question I asked, professor Bates proceeded to tell me I was "of a lower class than he was" because I have tattoos. The next day, I dropped the class to take it with another professor (it was a good move). Now, I've decided to write this. Please interpret this incidence as you would like to.
A must-take. All readings can be found online or are provided & attendance is not mandatory, though you'll find yourself wanting to attend & engage in the day's discussion. Easily the most intelligent and inspirational prof. i've ever had. Creates a calm environment and a bond that makes me feel as though I could trust him with anything. Amazing.
I never write reviews for any teacher, but Professor Bates is an exception. I enjoyed his class so much. Its probably the only class I have taken in my life that has inspired me and informed me about literature and what it really means regarding our society. I will be sad when this course ends but feel lucky that I have met a professor like him.
Currently taking him for Comm 111 right now he is a great teacher. On the first day of class he gives you a list of expectations he would like explaining the 3 major essays we will do. If you are lazy do not take this class, you are expected to read outside the class and be prepared to talk about it next class. He collects all homework.
Comp II opened my eyes to a world beyond my understanding at the time. Perhaps it would still be had I not taken the class. Its rare to have both a well- educated and caring professor, but Dr. Bates goes above and beyond. He cares about his subject and will always take time to help his students. Hes definitely one of the best at Bucks.
Professor Bates wants all his students to succeed . If you need help in the course he has no problem assisting you . He will push his students to their highest potential because he knows what everyone is capable of . He wrote me a letter of recommendation which lead to me receiving a scholarship. Work hard, pay attention and you will succeed .
I had Prof. Bates last semester and his class was very difficult but he was an amazing teacher. He assigns three 8 page research papers and a group presentation. The work is very time consuming and hard but his lectures on the material were very captivating. He made it interesting. He genuinely cares about his students and gave us a lot of advice.
Professor Bates is amazing, he prints out any class assignments you can't find on line for you so you don't have to shell out for unnecessary textbooks. He is willing to help you out, even after you're done his class, and he is overall an amazing Professor. Do yourself a favor and take him!
He is one of the worst professors I have ever had. Teaches you absolutely nothing and then expects you to understand what to suppose to do. He lectures you on false or inaccurate historical events and then drones on about his own political views that have almost nothing to do with the class/assignment. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS OR PROFESSOR!!!!!
Get ready to write three 8-page papers. Though the class is a bit tough, he is very inspirational. He makes you work for the grade so that you can benefit in the long run. Build a personal relationship and you will get an absolute, amazing letter of recommendation; letter of recommendations that Harvard and Yale thirst for. Trust me.
I missed one class, for the oral presentation. Meaning I had to write 4 papers instead of 3. I'm happy I did. He doesn't just teach you English, he teaches you how to succeed in college. I would say he is the reason I jumped from an all F's in highschool/C's in my first semester in college to all A's and one B in the rest of my classes. Take him.
As a hard worker and dedicated student he did not help me to succeed. I went to the tutoring center and countless people for help to make sure I meet the teachers criteria. He would give me a grade on a paper that did not represent my hard work. Whenever I asked him for help he did not clarify any of my errors on papers or help me to understand it.
Dr. Bates is the most supportive professor you will ever have. Take his class, and you will thank him later in life. Dr. Bates cares about his students and offers constructive critique during office hours. His class is an amazing opportunity to build strong writing skills that will help you to succeed as a college student and a young professional.
only assigned 3 grades the entire semester. 3 papers. 8 pages each. They also were not given a specific prompt for any paper. All that we were instructed to do was "prove a point" and then if he disagreed with your "point" you will not get a passing grade.
He expects you to do the work. He'll help you with it if you go to his office hours. He'll help you with transfer and recommendations. You need to keep up. If you fall behind it could be difficult catching up. If you have a problem, you can go talk to him. We got along
Professor Bates is caring but straight forward
Good grader. Lot of work. Lot of Reading. Keep up and you'll do alright.
Way more bark than bite. While he will make it seem like an A is nearly impossible, do the work and you will be completely fine. He spends a lot of time talking about life and giving advice, but it is often too much and you miss out on actually learning good writing techniques. I would take him again, but he isn't anything special.
A very good and humble professor. Can be challenging sometimes but for the good reasons. Gives good advice and is very helpful. Very lenient towards due dates and is understanding. Avoid if you are a slacker.
Absolutely incredible class. His class taught me how to think deeper, and it broadened my perspective. Its hard work, but its so worth it. If you have the chance to take him, do it. If you take his lectures in theyll help you for the rest of your life. Also dont hesitate to ask for help or a letter of rec. He wants to help his students.
I took Bates my first semester of school. He was one of the best teachers Ive ever had. I still see him in the hallway and he asks how I am. Hes really dedicated to his students who care. He offered me help if I ever needed it, and continues to check up on me even though I havent been in his class in over a year.
One of the best teachers in Bucks. Cares for you in class and very nice to talk to about outside world things. The only way to fail his class is if you always sleep in the class and never ask for any help with papers, otherwise you are destined to get a B or above in 80% of times. Little of papers through the course makes it a gem of a class.
I love this professor. He may be a little hard on you, but it comes from a place of love. He has a lot of knowledge and if you can get into one on one conversations you'll hear it all pour out of him.
Love him
You will not see that many professors like David Bates, if ever. Put in a little bit of effort in his class and you will be rewarded twice as much. Always willing to take time out of his day to help you with anything. The only bad thing about him, is your expectations being increased for every other professor. Take his class, you won't regret it.
Very solid teacher. Teaches you a lot about English composition and just everyday college. Gives great advice and will help you out with anything you need. I would definitively take him again. Highly recommend!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He had good reviews on here which is why I took his class but this was a huge mistake. He is extremely vague about what he wants in his assignments, doesnt give good feedback, rambles on and on every single class about the same irrelevant crap. He is very condescending and I would never take his class again
The actual class was the complete opposite of what I expected. He was out for two months for medical reasons, when he came back things were really off. He talks in a whisper, & says the same three things every class. You feel like you're living the same day over & over. He's also obsessed with himself & just talks about his accomplishments.
