he runs this course (weekend U) like a seminar. presentations every class, 2 small papers, lots of participation. you HAVE to stay on top of readings and read really thoroughly. he's a bit unclear w/r/t FORMATTING and STYLE of written work. not really chicago, not really mla, just random bergen style. arrrrg! very very much a HISTORY course.

this class was a bit of an adventure. don't expect to learn anything about the history of islam. you will lose points for "formatting errors" because he can't explain it properly. you will gain an appreciation for critical theory. you will learn to criticize your own work, which is incredibly valuable. he's a great guy... just... eccentric, maybe?
It's "professors" like Bergen that bring UofC's reputation from 0 to -1. Stay away from this loser.
Loved this prof! Not the best lecturer, not very organized despite putting an outline up on the website. But has an awesome sense of humour and makes a touchy subject easy to discuss and interesting no matter what your own beliefs. Enjoyed the way he taught and thought he looked a bit like Viggo Mortensen ;)
Loved his lectures--he had an honestly clever and always funny way of presenting the course--but he is an insane marker. Doesn't matter how well you know the facts and history, if you can't cite paragraph xyz from the text book on an exam, then you lose. So, it's your choice.
I had Bergen for prof when he taught 273 - a very hard class! But he was very helpful, and he even created a tutorial class for us because we were struggling. Great to talk to, and tries to get to know his students. Don't expect to coast! Yeah, his formatting is weird! Talk to him about your papers - he'll go through it page by page with you.
he is self centred, contradicting, compressed entire course in first half to talk about his research that has no merit in the last half. He reads from nots instead of having a class discussion in a discussion based class. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!
bergen's a great guy. he's passionate, enthusiastic, and has a great sense of humor. he's a relatively new prof. his marking is a bit crazy, but if you go and talk to him about it, he's very reasonable. this guy can dish it out, but he can take it just as well. but yeah he needs to find the right balance of course content & his own ideas.
oh man i totally agree: he totally DOES look like viggo mortensen!! this course was okay. he's a pretty cool guy, but the marking is a bit crazy, you know, but whatever, i learned a lot.
I've never had a professor turn me completely off a specific subject. Until this one, i can safely say i'm never taking a religious studies course again.
Bergen reads straight from other people's work without acknowledgeing that he is doing so. He is disrespectful to the students and tells them that they don't know anything because they are undergraduate students and that their poor work causes teachers to be lazy markers AND that they deserve to fail becasue they can't read directions.
The worst professor I have ever had. Very biased - a religious bigot. If you are anything but a complete atheist you will be offended in this class. Do not take courses by this professor
Man, ya he is a really hard marker. It makes it seem that whoever is religious is stupid and not intelligent, it's too bad cause he turns people off religion when there are some nice profs. The way he presented the class was all at once it was NOT nicely seperated into Christianity,Islam and Judaism. It was all mushed together. hard to learn.
Terrible, terrible. This guy is a hack; how and why is he an academic? Avoid his classes at all costs.
Dr. Bergen is well read, defends himself eloquently and is able to help you to look at religions from an outsider's view, even if you are deeply an insider. He is one of my favourite profs and this is only the second one I have taken from him.
Bergen is my favorite prof at the UofC. He isn't always organized but he does teach you the materal. His marking is very difficult, but he is extremely helpful. He improved my essay skills because of his high expectations and helpfulness. Talk to him outside of class, it helps a lot. He questions all and is very honest.
Everything to say, has already be said by the previous posters. I guess I should have listened.
he is not afraid to treat religious studies as exactly that-an academic study. this is not sunday school so don't get offended. if you want the fluffy religious stuff go to your own religious institution. you need to walk in with an open mind. expect to learn. that's university.
He obviously loves what he's doing but he can't teach to save his life. He expects you to hear the things he hasn't said and read the things he hasn't posted. We also have yet to use the textbook on evolution he made us buy. I have yet to learn anything about the Hebrew Bible.
I will admit that Dr. Bergen is a very funny professor but that is the only thing good about him. He is disorganized in his notes and expects too much from his students. I recommend getting a different professor.
Bergen is a great teacher. He knows his material and places it firmly in a academic setting. His background gives the class a interesting edge, and he candid about his personal opinions. Bergen is a hard but fair marker, you have to work if you expect a good grade in his class. However if your not willing to address religion critically his classes
This is my third time visiting this page, as I have in the past debated taking one of his courses. I can understand the criticism, as Dr. Bergen is not orthodox. However, his class has been positively challenging, and the most cerebral course I've ever taken. It's true that, at times, he's just winging it, but he and the course were brilliant
I have yet to meet a prof who challenges students to think critically as much or as creatively as D.A. Bergen. He is one hell of a prof!
Dr.Bergen is a great professor. He truly is an academic of Religious Studies. His classes are very enticing, I've learned more from Dr. Bergen than I have in any of my other religious studies classes. If you're in university because you want to learn and be challenged then this is the class for you. Absolutly great professor.
Is he coming onto this website and writing all of this stuff himself?!?! Bergen teaches classes about HIS theories and you MUST agree with him in order to get a decent mark. If you dont agree with him then he makes an example out of you in front of everyone. Be sure to hear things like "There is no such thing as religon"
He clearly is an academic, and not a TEACHER. the material was interesting, but he had an inability to explain it in concrete terms. he got in the way of a good class. he is rude and disrespectful.
he his quite intolerant of religion and people who hold religious beliefs. he doesn't care about other people's views, and if someone wants to give an opinion from their religious viewpoint, expect to be insulted.
He is somewhat critical but he has important points to make. He makes you really think! He also doesn't force you to believe what he tells you. It's theory and ideas-- not necessarily truth. Be open to going past your own religious beliefs and thinking critically. A both challenging and great professor. Really!
He is a fantastic teacher. His intention is to open your mind though he does base his instruction on facts which may offend people of whichever faith he's disecting. He is also weloming to any student who would like to discuss the topic, or how to raise their grades.
I really like Dr. Bergen, in spite of what some people say. He's knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and super funny! He deals with touchy topics at times, but I think he handles them well and directly. Going to class is necessary to pass RELS 273, and you will have to work; but you should expect to work in university. I would definitely recommend him. :D
Is not a big fan of answering students questions
He is an intimidating figure, but I got the sense he was genuinely intelligent. Of all my profs in the last 4 years, he had the biggest influence on me. I never got the sense he was anti-religious, only that he's into challenging religious orthodoxy. Exam and assignment grading is fair, but comments will deflate your ego. Looks like Viggo+J.Cameron
I thought that Dr. Bergen was incredibly helpful as well as insightful. He made clear links from class and reading material, while also grading fairly. He's a hard grader and definitely into challenging religion within the parameters of an academic environment. Be prepared to tackle some challenging and touchy topics. SUCH A GREAT CLASS!
He may be intelligent, but he belongs in the realm of academia, not teaching. He SUCKS at conveying his point clearly, so that when you're writing his paper you have no idea what to write on. He brushes aside your comments unless they agree with yours, and marks really hard. While you learn from him, this is not a class to take for a good mark.
Students who require any special accommodations should avoid this instructor. I found it painfully obvious why this man is still a sessionnal; he is rude and disorganized and while he appears to very intelligent, he CANNOT TEACH. Marking is inconsistent and marks are often unavailable. AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
Explains the best he can, when you need help or clarification he is a huge d-bag. He is condescending and rude. He straight up laughed at a girl who asked a question. He marks with the expectation that all students understand and right at a PHD level in a second year course. Avoid if possible
He is a very good prof, makes you think, honest, upfront. He doesn't give notes, and requires an incredible amount of reading be done for his class. I would not take this class as an elective way to hard for an elective. He is one of the hardest markers I have experienced and I am in my 4th year. He does NOT mark FAIR.
Great prof for 3rd and 4th year students but expects too much form first year students. Grades very hard. This Class is more difficult than my organic chemistry class. He articulates his points very well and makes you think.
I took a class with Dr. Bergen because he won a teaching award last year and I was sick of bad profs at the U of C. I guess he does deserve an award, but only for being the absolute worst of the worst. he killed my desire to learn about religion in an academic setting. why is he so cynical and hateful?
His classes are...interesting. An extremely hard marker. Don't take unless you are a religious studies major as he goes through many terms that most will not be familiar with. Makes you think, if you are looking to challenge yourself, or become an atheist, pick this class.
A very difficult marker and plays favourites. Does not respect students. I have no problem speaking in class, but I couldn't do it in his class-he intimidates me. Not helpful when I saw him in office hours. Seems disillusioned from reality. LOTS of reading, and marking unfair - though it is a 2nd year undergrad course, it felt like a masters level!
Dr Bergen is a brilliant man. He was educated in an era when learning and thought were imperative. Unfortunately in today's world, grades and money run the world... So if you want to LEARN, look no further. If you want an easy, take home grade, look elsewhere. Perhaps you should ask yourself what you are looking for; marks or an education...
Very intelligent, and opened my mind to a new way of thinking. Always enjoyed going to class. I thought it would be an easy class since I had an A+ in the other 2 RELS courses that I have taken, but I worked my ass off to get a B in this class. It's a class that is worth taking if marks don't matter to you as much as learning.
Very interesting lectures. Tests and assignments were out there. Assignment expectations were never made clear. Tests are based far more on memorization than comprehension. At one point we were expected to do fill in the blanks with quotes from the Bible. Concepts are easy, every little detail is up for grabs. Talks fast, no visuals were provided.
He probably thinks too much but I loved his lectures and loved going to class. Definitely a challenging class, not just in his grading but he challenges you, your thoughts and beliefs. I loved it! Not an easy class, you definitely will have to work, and take notes!
Mr Bergen is an amazing professor. It sucks that, from what I've heard, he won't be teaching next year. He is definitely a professor for people who would like to learn. Slackers, GPA booster: STAY AWAY. I love going to his lecture. It is a lot of hard work to get a good mark in his class because he does not make it easy. AMAZING!
Overall not very helpful. He seems to enjoy lecturing and hearing his own voice more so than teaching material. Often asks for student questions and then dismisses them as uninformed. Heard multiple times throughout the term: "If you are in your 1st year this likely won't make any sense to you,4th year, maybe". Even as a 4th year, I left confused.
Hard exams. You HAVE to go to class. But the lectures are fast and confusing. He insists that we ask questions, but when we do he shuts them down as unacademic. His exams mostly focus on the in class material. For the short answer questions in the exams he will remove marks for wrong answers. so if you get it wrong you get a negative mark, not zer
yes hes hard, yes he makes you think, yes you study your *** off to get a 70%... but this is BY FAR my favourite class, so interesting and twisted, has made my eyes open to the incredible world of religion. I now know how amazing it is to have an incredible prof now thanks to berger. So worth the bad mark. SO WORTH IT
Does not adequately prepare students for exams, is not approachable, does not respect student questions. Don't take a class with this professor. His lecturing is disorganized, filled with digressions as well as "tongue in cheek" and you need to memorize every word, because an in class joke may literally appear on your test in M/C.
It is discouraging to see so many of his students' questions dismissed as "bad" or "unacademic. That said, his lectures and his general approach to the course are interesting. His tests aren't hard - GO TO CLASS, take notes, do the readings, review 4-6 hours, and you should get 80% or higher.
He is an interesting guy with an interesting approach. His lectures really make you think. However, it's basically impossibly to get over 80% on his tests and he is not helpful at all. He asks questions about random opinions he throws out in class. DO NOT take this class unless you are a masochist who doesn't care about grades.
I took Rels 273 and Rels 331 with Dr. Berhen in Fall 2010. I respect him as a person because he knows his information but he cannot convey it to the students. He does not seem to respect anyone and he will tell you this all the time. He goes off topic in every class and it is extremely hard to follow him and I attended every class. Avoid if possibl
If marks did not matter at all, it would have been one of the best classes I have ever took. He is so entertaining and a genius in his line of work. He really does make you smarter rather than just memorizing stuff. That saying, he is quite tough and the tests require a lot of studying. Definitely not a GPA booster.
Every prof, especially in Rels, has a bias, and his comes from the standpoint of evolutionary biology. Not my favorite way of approaching Rels, but he's a sweet guy and I respect him. Seriously just go to class and listen and take notes and there is no reason not to do well in his class. People only complain cus non-majors take rels for an easy A
I found Dr. Bergen to be very rude to students. I also found it hard to follow him. He seems to know a lot about the topic but he has a hard time conveying information to students. While filling out our course evaluations (without him in the room) the class erupted with vehement discontent about Dr. Bergen. I advise people to stay away from him.
Awful professor, brutal marker, awful class. If you are unlucky enough to land in his GNST 500 drop it immediately and take the condensed version in the spring/summer like a boss!
I don't know what everyone on this forum is complaining about. Dr. Bergen has fairly difficult tests but if you work hard and you are intelligent then you will do well. I think that he is very fair in marking and very helpful and friendly in and out of class. It's likely that the rest of the people on this forum expected an easy A
He is very abstract and tough. If you enjoy deep philosophical discussion then take his classes. Not a GPA booster, his tests and marking are tough, but if you make the effort, he's fair.
Interesting discussion, but difficult to communication with and study for. MUST ATTEND EVERY LECTURE to do well. He picks up little things from class to put on tests. Tests are difficult, class is not a GPA booster. Bergen is also quite abrasive, rude and self indulgent, wouldn't recommend this class for non majors.
This prof completely ruined religious studies for me. He is difficult to take notes from and is not receptive to questions from the class. They are generally dismissed as either non-academic or "too Christian." Class average on the midterms was below 50. Probably should not teach 200 level classes.
Bergen's class is by far the best class I have taken in three and a half years at the U of C. Insightful, passionate and extremely intelligent, you will be challenged, and expected to come up with intelligent answers and debate. It's probably the toughest class I've taken, but also the most intellectually satisfying. Great professor.
David made it his personal goal to offend as many religious people as possible. If you want an honest, objective look at religious history, consider a different prof. That being said, as long as you went to his class consistently, the tests were decently easy.
I absolutely loved his class. He goes out of his way to create a shock factor to his students, which is a large part of why most students would probably dislike this class with him, but if you are able to get passed your own personal beliefs and enjoy a more philosophical approach, you will find his style of teaching amusing and stimulating.
He is a funny and engaging prof. HOWEVER, he tries to apply 500 level stuff to his 200 level course, in other words, abstract and philosophical...class average was very low. His exams are difficult. But he did help us out before our final. I like him but do not want to take another class because my GPA is doomed if I do. NOT an introductory course.
Avoid if possible! Hard to take notes from and very rude to most students.
HORRIBLE, boring, offensive, and all around not a good prof what so ever. This was suppose to be an intro to Western Religion but instead turned into the nature of religion. Overall would not recommend taking his class.
Although by no means does Bergen teach an easy class, it's extremely interesting and engaging. I disagree about him being offensive, he just is very quick to point out that you're not thinking academically, which is fair. I loved his class, and think he's very intelligent and passionate about his field.
TOUGH marker. Treats a 1st year course as a 4th year class. Unclear expectations, marking guidelines for assignments. Think its an easy online class? think again... textbook long and boring.
THe online class is awful. Barely any feedback provided. His expectations of a entry level course are too high. Tough marker, tests are tricky & not on main concepts. DONT TAKE HIS COURSE!!!
I didn't like this prof!! He is hard and pushed me to drop this class because he expects us to teach ourselves and didn't post notes
This was THE greatest class of my degree. I have taken a number of classes with Dr. Bergen and he has inspired me to be a far better student than I imagined I could be. His classes aren't easy, but education shouldn't be! That's why you forget everything from those "easy A" classes. Be present in mind and body, and Dr. Bergen will invest in you.
Whoa! This guy has an intense style to teaching. Forces you to think critically and use your brain but rewards you for hard work. I loved this class and what I got out of it. All the work I put in was definitely recognized
Easily the worst professor/teacher I have had at any level of school. He is completely unprepared for every class, and thinks that marking unnecessarily hard makes him a good prof. I took a humanities class with him a few semesters ago and by the end of the semester I still wasn't even clear what the point of the class was. They no longer offer it
this course was a journey! Its really complicated, but i think he is one of the best and most honest profs out there. Even though he is a tough marker, you come out of his class with a new perspective at how you look at this world.
I recently graduated with a BA and came back to U of C as an open studies student to take a few special interest courses while working. Dr. Bergen is exactly what first year students need to wake them up to the reality of what is expected at the post secondary level. I would have killed for a reality check that early on in my degree. Firm but fair.
Wonderful professor. Perhaps the best professor I've had as an undergrad student. He makes you think critically so that you can understand the topic at hand. I had to work my ass off to get a B in that class, but it was completely worth it because I learnt so much from him. First year students should take a class with him, truly an eye-opener.
Go into a class with Dr. Bergen with your eyes open. It will not be an easy A, or even an easy B. It will be difficult to follow his lectures. If you want a reality check, someone to pull back the veil of academics and poke holes in the system, he's your prof. I withdrew from the course at great cost, but there's others who perservered & loved it.
Worst prof I've had in 2 years. He likes to hear himself talk and talk intelligently, but it's impossible to learn from his lectures. They are messy and all over the place and at the end of each lecture I can't think of anything I legitimately understood. Tests and exams are too difficult for a 201 class.
Easily one of the best professors I've had in my four years of study. The man is simply brilliant. I don't know what others are on about saying how he's a terrible prof. He is a bit hard to follow, but he makes you think critically and that's what professors should be doing. Received an A- in the course, but I really had to work for it. Worth it.
Bergen is a very serious, entertaining, and amazing prof — who will mark you realistically.
Dr. Bergen has a reputation for being difficult but only by those students who are expecting to have things handed to them and who believe they have the capacity to manipulate their profs. Dr. Bergen is by far one of the most interesting, intellectually active individuals I have ever met and is a pleasure to learn from.
Great professor. He is very passionate about the subject, and he doesn't mess around. This in mind, his courses are not easy. But if you're up for a bit of a challenge and some really interesting, thoughtful discussion, I would seriously recommend taking one of his classes. He's a no bull crap kind of guy, and stands by his rules, but a great prof.
BEST prof I have had in 3 years. You must take initiative to learn in this class - actively engage and take in whatever you can. Dr. Bergen literally changed the way I view the world and while he is a tough marker - it's because he is realistic and if you put in the work and really grasp what he teaches you, you will get the good mark you deserve.
Bergen is tough, but that's the point. If you're looking for something different from your everyday lecture, take this class. The subject is heavy, but if you show up, do the readings, and give some effort, you'll do well, and you'll learn a lot. You get to explore self-expression in a new way, which is awesome. This class is worth it. Recommended.
Would I recommend this prof? If you're up for a challenge take him! If you don't mind a pessimistic way of looking at life and resistance to religion he is great. His outlook and teachings are some of the most interesting I have ever encountered but that does not work for grading. Good luck!
Dr. David Bergen has good intentions. However the only way you can approach the class is HIS way, and if you choose to do otherwise, you'll have a very hard time. Definitely not an intro to religion course. Not open minded and not willing to change.
As a whole, Dr. Bergen was respectful and kind. He is receptive to most ideas and is willing to help you if you give a damn about the class. Although his grading criteria is very enigmatic, I did not encounter the outlandishness that others had encountered. His lectures are somewhat enlightening, but also peculiar for the most part.
Dr. Bergen is amazing. If you want to take a class for the benefit of learning, take his classes; he's so very deep and philosophical. He'll rock your world. He's funny and very interesting, and very objective. Unfortunately, his tests will screw your GPA.
Dr. Bergen was, as he called himself, a "hard-ass" professor. Must to go to lectures as all the tests are based off of his lectures. He wrote the textbook so the text definitely helps with the exams. Hard marker, really makes you work for it, but you definitely leave the class with your mind rattled (in a good way). 4 tests, 1 quiz, no final.
Bergen wants you outside the box and will challenge you to challenge yourself, he hates passive dribble that any monkey could extrapolate from the texts. He may be intimidating, but he wants you to participate and learn!
I love, love, love Bergen. He is amazing. He truly is a brilliant, inspirational, intelligent man. I absolutely loved attending his lectures, and I was crushed when I had to miss one. His lectures are so thought provoking, you won't be able to stop thinking about what he has to say. He is so poetic when he speaks, so it makes it easy to listen.
Bergen is the first prof I have had that genuinely cares about the education experience for his students. He teaches a little old-fashioned, but it he is so brilliant that you can't help but like him. Very high expectations in terms of writing level and reading comprehension, but also very willing to help and elaborate on complex religious content.
Bergen teaches unconventionally, but authentically. He's very passionate about the material, and it shows. He draws from a wide variety of texts, but is very specific in his approach. His lectures are engaging, and highlight perspectives on society I can't say I would have gained otherwise. I've never had a prof who cares more than him.
He doesn't teach, the textbook has an agenda and isn't very good, and group work was marked hard and was awful. Tests were decently challenging but the material wasn't interesting.
Do not take his class if you are looking for an easy A. Online tests examine the most specific details. Having the book in front of you and reading it 3 times does not help at all. Great way to wreck your hard earned GPA. Decently interesting material though.
Tough grader but he challenges you. His lectures are fluid and inspirational to listen to. Lots of reading, and re-reading but the material is fascinating.
One of the worst profs I've had. Doesn't put the notes online despite many people asking. Not the friendliest if you ask him a question. He answers a yes-or-no question by telling you to find it for yourself.
Horrible prof, not willing to help students at all. Ask him a question and he will answer with another question. Really tough grader and un clear on what he expects. No online notes and goes off on a tangent every lecture.
RELS 200 is an online-based D2L class. As you know with most online classes, you learn everything on your own. It seems easy 'cause theres only 6 tests no midterm or final. You get tested on the smallest of details. When doing the tests make sure you have an online version of the textbook, just reading it is not enough to get a good mark OnTheTests
Dr. Bergen expects you to do readings and understand what you are talking about. This class is not easy, but it is worth it. Dr. Bergen was so interesting to listen to and made me actually want to work and come to class. I wish that I could take every class with him.
The class is difficult, you have to show up to class ready to take notes & keep up with the readings to do well, & he isn't the greatest at feedback. However, this was the best class I've ever taken, and the best prof. You can tell he really cares about what he lectures and that he cares about his students as well. It was an unforgettable class :)
Bergen is by far the best prof I've ever had. He's brilliant and often goes on tangents, his lectures can be very dense, and the material is challenging. But if you put in the effort, you'll come out of it with a better understanding of the world and yourself. All I can say is, please take this class, it is SO worthwhile.
Bergen would not answer questions and instead more often than not referred students back to the textbook. This was not helpful as students were asking questions regarding the readings, which are extremely difficult to grasp. His lectures consisted of multiple tangents which had absolutely nothing to do with the topic we read prior to that lecture.
