doesnt really have his act together, but not a hard class to pass
his grading of papers makes NO sense
Cute little man - bowtie, GRR... Seemed to favor the guys though - sorry girls
Loves subject & seems to want you to love it too--great prof for English majors.
Easy B but his lectures are all over the place and his grading makes no sence. He likes you if you agree with the way he thinks. Easy papers and easy class.
Great professor. Fun, enthusiastic, and really knows the material. If he sees the class getting bored he will change the subject and keep everyone interested.
he's nice and sort of interesting. you have to go to class if you want a good grade. the papers are easy to write and you can pick your own subject matter.
BERGMAN ROCKS!!!
He only likes you if you agree with him; very stubborn and sometimes unrealistic.
He was very interesting and I learned a lot.I was not clear about his grading and he was not clear about explaining the grade. His tests were rather difficult--essay...Once,I wrote down something he said in class-exactly and he marked it wrong.
Nice cute man. He has a tendency to ramble and not be very clear. Although, he's very helpful. Just make sure you ask him questions otherwise you get confused.
Bergman's grading is totally arbitrary. He spends more time talking about politics and George Bush than he does the subject matter. Don't bother going to him to fix a grade. You can show him his mistake- He doesn't care.
Cute little man!! Always mismatches and rambles a lot, but he loves literature so much. Willing to help and friendly, but lectures can be boring. In 327, he gives two tests with a paper, in 222 just two tests (midterm and final). Sweet man!
def go to every class, he does give alot of information each lecture. his grading is really confusing, i also wrote a quote from his lecture that he marked wrong, then went to him after class and he wouldnt do anything about it
He's a really nice guy, however; his grading is rather unfair. He grades based solely on three tests--there is no redeeming yourself if you do bad on them, and he doesn't like your writing if it isn't like his own.
Really nice guy. This is the second time I've had him, and I would definitely take him again. Takes attendance, but doesn't seem to hold it against you. I skipped class a lot last semester and still got an A. Just a midterm, final, and 10 page paper.
The man rambles a lot. I don't know who hired him but my dog can teach better. He markes you wrong on the material he told you to write in your noter. Very absent minded. He needs to retire.
He's such a cute little man. I found him funny quite often and it's that type of funny where he almost giggles to himself and blushes. :) I def. learned alot and gained a new appreciation for literature.
Cutest little man ever... he stumbles around the room like a **** and generally looks very confused. I'm not sure he knew what he was teaching half the time, and there was a lot of reading to do, but he was sweet and an easy grader. As long as you keep up with the work, you'll be fine.
Bergman is the cutest little man in the world. very friendly, makes class interesting. am definitely taking more of his classes. so spacy, giggly, laughing at his own little jokes constantly. LOVE him. <333
a rambling, careless man -- entertaining in his sheer disarray. never handed papers back in a timely fashion, but expected you to be prompt with yours.
Dr. Bergman is a very understanding man. His paper topics are very easy to write on, and he gave all the questions before the exams, we just had to rewrite what we had already prepared. He rambles at times, and is easily excitable. It's easy to fall asleep-especially if room is warm.
what a delightful man!
Tactless comments on papers. Knows all the answers--the truth of all poetry while he gazes out of the window and performs.
how could anyone not like him? not academically rigorous at all but you'll learn a great deal if you pay attention i think. a delightful person. the readings (colette, isherwood, foucault) are all wonderful works.
Just come to class and take notes and the test will be easy.
This was my third class with Bergman because he ROCKS! Friendly and genuinely interested in what he teaches. Doesn't demand too much-if you fail his class, jump off a bridge for being an idiot. Applies poetry to art, politics to make class engaging and applicable to all studies. WONDERFUL professor!
wonderful, WONDERFUL man. such a delight to be in class with. loved everything about his class. tests are not easy, but i pulled off a B+ in the class. :)
He's a very smart guy and so charming. In my 4 years at Towson, he was one of the very best profs I encountered. Really nice too...bought coffee for everyone on the day of the final exam.
Dr. Bergman is such a sweet guy, a self-proclaimed "marshmellow." Class is a little boring, but listening to his intensity when he's reading a poem is like nothing else. He brought the whole class coffee for the final exam :)
i loved this little old man so much i wanted to hug him and take him home. he reads poetry with such enthusiasm that you cant help but adore him. dont always need to go to class and some classes u just sit and read poems. the papers are simple and the final was fair. i would recommend him, theres nothing to dislike about him.
Scattered and disorganized. Lectures are dicey and he is all over the place. He's very egotistical and classes are borring. I can't help but fall asleep
He is sooo disorganized and pompous. He was always late for class and then he would mark his students absent if they were late (bad practice). I didn't care for him or his class. Also only his veiws are correct
Anyone actually interested in the literary tradition should not pass up hearing Bergman lecture on Modern American Poetry. He is a real professor, interested in scholarship - not a babysitter.
wow this man gives some of the most boring lectures I have ever had. he takes forever to get papers/tests back to you. after a while he just stops taking attendence
ehh....not so great. nice man - tries really hard to get the class involved, but the class tends to not really care - which makes things reallllllllllly boring, but thats not entirely his fault i guess. blah
he does try hard to get the class involved, but since most of us don't participate, the class is very very boring. 2 papers, one with a presentation but you have to write like he does or else he takes off points. i wouldn't take him again... you shouldn't either.
I hate this man! He is a short agnostic man that wears a bow-tie everyday! He goes off onto tangents that have nothing to do with anything! Not clear, unorganized, and boring. If you value your sanity don't take him!
I absolutely loved his class! He does digress quite a bit, but it's absolutely fine in this enviroment. No assignments or tests; only a poetry portfolio (10 poems) due at finals. He's an intriguing and sweet man who has led quite a life. The way he reads a poem -- pure beauty. Easy A for this class. Would highly recommend!
This professor's genuine love for our language and his obvious knowledge and respect for those who dance on paper make his classes wonderful places to meet up with writers whose work spans decades. His writing classes? Very safe and non-threatening places for the emergent writer to take chances. PJ--1986
He is such a sweet man, very concerned about his students. Stepped up to bat for me when it came to my attention I was missing a class for graduation and I graduated on time! His classes are fun, interesting, and you will certainly grow as a writer, his advice is priceless. Take a class with him!!!
Bergman is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He cares about his students and that shows in and out of class every single day. I would have taken every one of my classes with him had it been possible.
From day one he was very unclear, and confussing. The class isnt worth time or effort need to get an A. He will take of points for silly things like bad hand writing on timed test and adding to much extra information on a paper. This was the worst class I ever took.
bergman is a nice man with good intentions, but you'll find 3/4 of the class drooling during his lectures (the other 1/4 are text messaging.) if he doesn't like your style of writing, you'll know by your grade. and the anti-bush comments get really old, really fast. i wouldn't necessarily recommend him.
Interesting man, AWFUL lectures. They have no relevancy to anything whatsoever, nor does the material. He's teaching a new class thats a Engl requirement, and its brutal. I imagine he would be better for Poetry or whatever else he teaches, but if you're looking for an easy A in a stupid class, don't even bother taking him. Don't buy the LIVETEXT... its $90 and you never use it. Biggest waste of money ever.
i'm really bitter about paying 90 bucks for the livetext and never using it.
OK, don't buy the book. Opened it once for one day, waste of $. THE EASIEST CLASS I'VE EVER HAD! We literally wrote maybe 7 poems and all of the class periods would be going over the combined packet of poems we'd written (they'd read/explain, we'd discuss). There's one 2pg paper about a poem of yours. OMG, EASY CLASS. And a 300level at that!
as long as you can make a homosexual relation to whatever you read in class, you will do good. If not, dont bother speaking. grades so harshly, marked something inncorrect on my paper with the comment "this is grammtically correct, i just dont like how it sounds." please run!
He means well, but he's highly disorganized, boring beyond belief, and grades based on a criteria known only to him. The good news is that once you figure out that he's looking for the most simplistic writing possible, it's not difficult to get an A. Bring a book to read during class; you won't miss anything.
Nice guy. I'm still not to sure what the class was about though. If you have to, take him. Just keep it simple, he can tell when you are trying to sound smart. I got an A
Neat guy - Somewhat disorganized, and isn't always the most clear, but knows his material and is willing to help. He has a true passion for his subject and assigns interesting reading assignments. His visual analysis of poems is funny as well. I'd definitely recommend him, just be patient with the man.
Dr. Bergman is by far one of the best professors I've ever had.
didn't have nearly enough poetry assignments, and took too long sitting around waiting for other people to comment on poems. great guy, but the class needs to be a bit more challenging to keep people involved and interested.
He's a really nice, sweet professor. I found him very quirky and endearing and did provide helpful feedback on poems. However, he wasn't very organized and the goal for the class was a bit unclear. Plus, it seemed as if he graded based on you poetry writing talent rather than on your attendance and participation. Which I do find a bit unfair.
Very nice guy. Quirky, endearing... sometimes a bit absent-minded, but overall a wonderful professor.
Very nice, sometimes absentminded and a little boring but other times really funny and quirky. 2 papers and 2 tests(gives you the questions ahead of time). fair grader. enjoyed going to class most of the time, sometimes too boring. nice man.
I honestly have no idea what he wanted in any of his papers. Some papers i got A's on some i got low C's, but my writing style never changed. The revision we are asked to do i had a 92 on and just reprinted out the same paper and got an 88 on the revision...? Not too difficult of a class Midterm isn't hard. Bergman's a cool dude overall.
A great teacher and an award winning editor. Can be absent minded at times, but often is balancing other projects along with teacher. One of the great writers at Towson and holds students to high standards. Those students that complain about their grades most likely put in minimal effort.
Professor Bergman is such a nice man! He really cares about his students and takes everything to heart. He is always willing to help and WANTS to help. I worked pretty hard and got a solid B, so he grades a little tough but overall a good class. He makes the class as interesting as it can be with the material, he dosen't lecture the whole class!
UGH! He is such an arrogant ****...it's hard to believe that someone who can grade poems so harshly isn't a good writer himself. He criticized a poem of mine, but little did he know that it had been published and received an award from the National Library of Poetry.
Pretty easy to tune out, but pay attention. Inconsistant with grading, but is obviously trying really hard to help out students. Very friendly and thoughtful, and I think if I had him for a different class, I would have liked him more. ENGL200 is bologna and totally pointless.
Fantastic professor. The work was pretty easy, and class discussions were entertaining.
Amazing poet, professor and mentor. Dr. Bergman told me things I didn't want to hear, which made me a better poet, a better person, and down the road (without his even knowing it), got me sober. He played a big part in saving my life--almost 25 years ago.
Had a blast in this class. Dr. Bergman is a pretty cool guy, a bit silly sometimes but he's open to all writing styles and seems to really enjoy what he's doing. Highly recommended.
There was no focus or direction to the class. I really wanted to leave the room almost every second I was there. The only thing this class really taught me is tollerance. His teaching ability is poor. I got a B in the class, it is an easy A if you can get over the boredom.
This was the worst class experience I have had at Towson. For the writers that have not read that much school like literature on your own and are relatively new at writing. DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He belittles you, does not help you improve your writing what so ever. It is a waste of time going to ask him for help. He grades horribly. Don't take
Bergman is quite possibly the funniest prof i've ever had. He sometimes goes off on tangents but it keeps me interested. The only grades in this class are participation and 3 exams so if you're a good test taker and good at poetry def take it w/Bergie!
WORST CLASS EVER!! This class is so incredible boring. Your grade consists of 3 exams. Each exam is essay and identification (he gives you about 20 poems for the exam but puts about 8 on and you have to identify 7). This class is worthless, but more importantly he is not funny and just reads poems all class. I wish attendance wasnt mandatory
Great teacher, but the class is total crap. A generic high school English class taken up a notch. It's too bad that you're required to take it as an English major. Bergman is intelligent, funny, and helpful. I enjoy him, but not the actual class itself.
Professor Bergman is awesome! I took the class because I wanted to be pushed with my writing and he did just that. If you're serious about writing, there is no better professor to take. He's also my mentor and someone that I KNOW will tell me the truth about my writing. If you don't like criticism, don't take take.
The fact that Towson requires you to take this is ridiculous. What did i learn? Mostly nothing about ENGL but lots about the professor. This guy has no filter or people skills, awkward little guy. I wish i took something more away from this class. Its hit or miss with the grading, either loves your work or hates it. Only two valuable class periods!
Bergman is a really funny professor who is crazy about poety. He has a lot of interesting stories about other poets and he is just a genuinely nice guy. He was not pushy about deadlines and when he thought you did a good job, he made a point to tell you and make you feel proud.
Very boring class. His lectures consist of him sitting there thinking about what to talk about next. Nice guy, kinda harsh of a grader for a freshman introductory class.
Class is pointless-Just a way for TU to take more of your money & waste time. Prof. is a nut sometimes but loves poetry. Doesnt make lesson plans, talks about own experiences, talks to us like we are retarded picks boring bks to read-TU is thinking of cutting this requirement :)
I adore Dr. Bergman. The class is lecture-based. Two papers, a midterm, and a final. Pay attention, take notes, and you'll be fine. Such an interesting man. Very much enjoyed the class, and others he has taught.
I adore Dr. Bergman. Class is lecture-based, and always interesting. He is a wealth of knowledge and I always look forward to class.
Professor Bergman is great! I always enjoy his class. The class is lecture based, and he always has fun stories to lighten the mood. He doesn't give a lot of assignments so it's important that you do your best on each one. Overall I recommend! Take this class! You will not regret it!
I'm not even going to lie, this guy is very boring. Not only that, he comes to class with no lesson plan what so ever. In other words, I think he kind of just wings it. There is no text book for the class, instead 4 small novels. Overall, he's an easy A. But you have to be able to stand the boredom and not withdrawl in order to receive it.
Really sweet professor who loves English/Literature.He doesn't assign much at all.I wouldn't schedule his class early cause he just sits and talks (no notes, no slides, barely discussion)and his voice is calming.People complain he is a tough grader, that's only if you don't know grammar/citations or read directions. He wants college level essays!
Bergman is a great professor. He's passionate about literature, and he obviously wants his students to succeed. There's three papers, a revision, a midterm, and a final. He's a tough grader, but as long as you know grammar and citations, it's not bad. He's very nice and always available to talk to students, too!
I learned more on how to write critical papers in one semester than all of high school and previous years of college combined. He expects a certain level of experience already, but doesn't mind going over stuff. Accepts late work. Easy to ask for help. We used every book. Allows laptoptablet use if you ask beforehand. Papers usually 3-4 pages long
By far one of the most knowledgable professors in the department. If you are willing to participate and are interested in the class, he is great. Otherwise, I could understand him being described as boring. He helped me become a better writer and a better English major as a whole.
A creative and friendly man! He's actually a published poet so he gives great advice. He also gives lots of feedback and guides you in peer review. If you can't afford the poetry text books or can't find it, he lets you bring your iPad or computer to read the poems off of. Great experience. He's honest but kind.
Excellent teacher! Accepts late work, understanding of circumstances, allows you to read poems on your laptop so you don't have to buy the book. Loves participation. I'm not an English major but if I was, I would def take his class again.
Dr. Bergman is a very sweet man. He has great intentions but his lectures are very long and boring. He does not use power points. HE stands in the front and lectures for an hour and fifteen minutes. If he sees that there is still time left when he is done discussing the readings for the day he will talk about others readings he is interested in.
How could anyone say he is boring!! Bergman is a man of so much wisdom that it is humbling. He is so fascinating and smart. He will teach you so much just because he loves english as an art so much. He made me fall in love with so many poets I would have never been exposed to.
