He's hilarious
Dr. B is just awesome. Very funny, helpful, but no piece of cake class.
The Best
As a teacher, he's awesome and excellent.
This man rocks
Couldn't ask for more. Educates and entertains!!!
Awesome!
great teacher, good notes, knows his stuff
best teacher ive ever had, teaches you alot and makes class fun
Great teacher. Very helpful, but a hard class
one of the best teacher i ever had
Perfect Professor: Entertains and Good Teacher. But, Teaches Hard Classes.
Bernstein is the gratest teacher ive ever had
Makes even the most god-awful boring classes (i.e. CS346) entertaining with his razor sharp wit and sarcastic jokes. Plus he knows the material really well. Take him if you get the chance!
Hilarious! Also very intelligent, dedicated, encouraging. He will provide a great platform for CS majors and minors. I ended up as a phil major and I can still apply some of the concepts he taught me.
Awesome. funny. great prof.
Prof. Bernstein is a great teacher. He really relates the topics of his classes to the real world. He also is absolutely hilarious. He's very easy-going when it comes to the work and class material.
take a class with dr. bernstein if you ever get the chance.. he's very smart and extremely funny. best cs professor ever.
Really cool professor. You learn a lot of skils you can actually use. Great guy also. Take his class, you won't regret it.
Amazing teacher; class races by, but you still come out having learned a lot. However, not an easy professor. If you want a good grade, you'll have to earn it. He is fair though, put in the effort and you'll do just fine.
Best teacher ever. Clever, insightful and funny. But every anecdote relates back to the topic of the discussion. One of the best professors at JMU if not one of the best in the world.
Excellent teacher. Not only is he hilarious, but I was really able to solidify my java programming skills thanks to Dr. B. Highest possible recommendation!
Funny guy, makes class somethign you will look foward going to just to hear him speak. Very knowledgable.. makes the subject very clear. Gives partial credit out the wazoo on tests.
As long as you don't ever say he's old, bald or fat you're okay! Lots of fun!
Dr. Bernstein is the best professor I have had so far at JMU, and he is probably one of the best professors at this school. He is very funny, which makes going to lectures enjoyable. He is very helpful, especially outside class time, and He is clear.
A very smart and helpful man. Always willing to help you out, even outside of his office hours. Be prepared to do a lot of work, but know that he is willing to help you out on anything you don't understand. A wonderful sense of humor too. A++!
he is the best cs professor. demanding but will work with you. very understandable, real smart. if you put the effort you won't be unhappy. all around great guy, def take him
GO Buzzy BUMS!
As an alumnus, all I have to say is I learned more from this man than probably any other CS professor in the department. No matter how much you know, Bernstein will find any way to make you understand the material. Yes, he is hard, but you will always leave the class having learned something.
What I learned: 1) Do not get a dog 2) Do not get married. Seriously one of (if not the) best CS teacher hands down. Well organized, knows the material extremely well. Amazing to think about the amount of time he has put into the class. Take this class. Other profs should take notes on his style
Amazing professor. Learned more from him in one semester than I've learned in several years. Definitely one of the very best professors of all time. What the hell he's doing teaching I have no idea. Don't miss the chance to take him!!!
Had him twice now, very funny, very nice. Beware tests are make or break, so study hard before tests! I seem to have trouble getting good grades in his classes but I have easily learned more from him than any other professor at JMU. Take him, you'll thank yourself later.
This man has a unique combination of expertise and clarity in his explainations. The material is always well organized and he has very elegant code example to back up most of his lectures. His tests are hard if you don't fully understand the material. Not to mention classes at times were hilarious. A must have professor for any CS major
Very easy and extremely funny. Made lectures enjoya ble.
Bernstein is amazing. He takes into account just how boring some core CS classes can get and spices it up with some weird humor. His programming assignments are doable and his tests are only hard if you completely missed one of the concepts. Definitely take him if you can.
He turned what could have been a terrible class into the class I looked forward to the most. Probabaly the funniest professor I have ever had. Especially in the class with no girls. Ask his opinion about the Jets and other random topics and you wont talk about anything academic for at least the first 10 mins of class. TAKE HIM!!!
Very smart, and always helpful. He knows how to make a boring class amusing.

Incredible professor, so knowledgeable and entertaining. And though you might think so, he is very easy to talk to one on one also, which is so very helpful, my favorite CS professor thus far
I don't know what the dude before me was on, but Bernstein is a flat out genius. If I had a problem, he would make sure to fix it. You just have to pay attention, and ask questions. Class isn't too hard. Overall he makes it fun, and you will learn a lot.
probably the best CS prof. But that isnt saying too much. if you dont go to class you are screwed. His powerpoint slides are so hard to learn on your own. IF you go to class you will do well. I went maybe once a week, ended up with a C luckily, that was my fault though, i easily could have made a B. VERY helpful outside of class. test are very hard
Bernstein is flat out the best CS professor I've ever had. He is a genius and able to explain anything that you may have trouble with. Lectures are usually very entertaining while managing to be comprehensive and informative. I truly cannot understand the negative comments about this professor.
I took his class cause it fit my schedule. Turned out to work very well in my favor. Smart and helpful outside of class. I emailed him after I graduated with a question and he answered me right away. Don't talk about your starting salary offers within earshot of him - he hates it :)
Go to lectures and ask questions when you don't understand things(on PA's mainly) and all will be fine. Tests are pretty challenging. Lectures are extremely entertaining. This was one of the few classes I didn't dread going to daily because Bernstein's stories are so entertaining. Definitely take him if you have the opportunity.
Awesome teacher, hard as hell class. Really knows his stuff, but moves incredibly fast it is hard to keep up with. I ended up dropping half way through. Highly recommend if you don't work and don't have a boy/girl friend.
He thinks he is the bomb, and after taking his class I agree. Starting off he seems FAR to cocky, but you soon realize he's just awesome. Explains concepts really well, and often relates them to his crappy life (as he reminded us often). He openly hates JMU and the world, but it's more amusing than anything else. Great professor, def pick him.
I've had Bernstein 3 times because he is by far the CS professor I've taken a class with. Great lectures that are entertaining and extremely informative. Class does move very fast and is hard though, but it's def. worth it. Goes far out of his way to answer your questions and is extremely helpful. One of the best professors at JMU, easily!
CS is not supposed to be easy - why we always have jobs, good paying ones. I have a great job where I wanted because of what I learned from my CS professors. Bernstein is easily one of the best professors I have ever had. GO to class, it's what you paid for - it will be enlightening and entertaining. If not, be a wuss and change majors.
Bernstein is by far the best prof in the CS dept. He is funny and entertaining during class and he will teach you everything you need to know to get an A. He is always available after class and if you go ask him questions he really does want to help. His goal is to make sure you learn, and at that he is awesome.
Bernstein is intimidating when you first meet him, but one on one he is very nice and he is also really helpful. His lectures are very clear and straightforward. I would definitely take him again if I could!
One of my favorite professors of all time. Just remember that he is "The Arbiter of Good", do the PA's, and get above a C on the final and you will do fine.
I've have Dr. Bernstein for a couple of classes and it literally blows my mind listening to him lecture. He is incredibly intelligent. You need to take one of his classes before graduation to see what I'm taking about. And ask him to tell the Train Story.
Read the book, it helps a lot. Come to class and ask questions. Will definitely learn something. The class is tough, he will definitely challenge you, and I highly recommend attending class because you will suffer if you don't attend. Although the practicums are 1% of your grade I highly recommend you do them, because you learn A LOT from those.
Read the book, pay attention, take notes, very clear.
I have had him for a lot of different classes, and I have never regretted taking him. He is extremely fair and helpful towards all the students.
Knows what he is talking about. Go to class, you'll want to anyway. Do the work, study, and you'll come out ok
Really funny and entertaining professor. Some of his jokes are crude, but it's all for fun. He tells a lot of interesting stories and he really does know what he is talking about. I didn't like the course overall, but he taught it well from a CS perspective.
Definitely not an easy class but Dr Bernstein has been one of my best professors at JMU. if you go to class willing to learn and study well you will do fine. I haven't heard from a good student saying they didn't like him. Would recommend
David Bernstein was meant to teach computer programming. This is a class you NEED to take if given the opportunity.
Favorite professor I've had so far here at JMU, he's really sarcastic and makes jokes during lectures. He really knows what he's talking about and is really helpful if you go to his office hours or email him. Hoping I can take him again!
I have heard other professors at JMU say this, and I agree : Bernstein is the best professor at JMU. He should be teaching at MIT and Stanford (which he has) but came here for his wife. Smartest guy I've ever met, and I've cried laughing in class at his stories. The class isn't easy, but computer science rarely is. Take Bernstein! Favorite teacher.
I want to go back to JMU just to take more courses with Dr. Bernstein. He is the best professor in the department. Take as many of his classes with him as you can while at JMU
I'm pretty sure Dr. Bernstein is border-line genius. This is good because he knows what he's talking about. On the other hand, it can be bad because his class is extremely difficult, and I think it is that way because of how smart he is. You'll learn a lot from him, but don't take him if you're not willing to put in many hours for a decent grade.
His class is hard but all questions on tests are very straightforward and he's a fairly easy grader. He's hilarious and definitely is the smartest CS professor here. Definitely take at least once
David Bernstein is by far one of the best professors I've had. He is a pleasure to sit in lecture with, making lessons fun and interesting. If you enjoy coding at all, take. his. class. Bernstein is not for people who want an easy time. He will teach you, but be prepared to admit that you don't know as much as you think.
Bernstein is my favorite professor at JMU thus far. He's hilarious, but he's easily on of the smartest guys I've ever met. He makes sure you know that you suck at programming, but helps you get just slightly better. As long as you don't act like a dumbass, you will love Bernstein. #FeelTheBern
First, let me say that Professor Bernstein was the best professor I have ever had. While his class is challenging, you learn so much more from it than you would another professor. THE FIRST WEEK IS TOUGH. I thought about switching my major several times, but I'm glad I didn't because this was the best class I've taken by far. Definitely take him!
The first half the semester I didn't like him because he was intimidating. But after I realized that was just his humor I enjoyed the class . He will stuff like, "Ooh! it excites me to see you don't know something that will be on the test." but then make sure you understand that thing. That's half his humor, he also tells funny stories in class.
Some people found this class to be challenging (and that's a good thing), but it's definitely manageable if you put in the effort. Although the material itself is not that interesting, it is fundamental stuff - so make sure you have a solid understanding of everything covered. I'd highly recommend Bernstein. He's a great professor. . and hilarious!
His lectures are hilarious, entertaining and so easy to understand even though the topics are so difficult. He is very helpful during office hours and always available through email. Post all powerpoints online so you can skip every class. The first few PA's are ok but the last ones are hell. Never opened the textbook. %100 recommend him. TAKE HIM.
He is a very nice man, but he is extremely difficult. He is so hard. I saw people saying that you can skip class. That may be true for 159 but not for any other class. You will not do well if you skip class or do not do all the reading.
Simply put, David Bernstein is a paradox. One second he says he loves to fail his students, the next he appears very genuine and kind. His grave curves are beyond atrocious, 35% each for both midterm and finals, 10% for programming assignments, and 20% for your own project. But he does have some interesting stories to tell from time to time.
Mans a goddamn legend. Pretty sure he used to teach at MIT, nothing short of a genius. Hes funny as hell too, best prof Ive had in my two years here.
Pros: The class is setup well, he is very smart, he explains things very clearly, and he is funny... Cons: He grades pretty strictly... Overall: He does a great job preparing you for the real world and he is a great professor.
This guy is on this earth to teach and inspire young adults. I would not be where I am today without his coursework.
Literally one of the funniest and smartest guys I have met. At first, the PA (programming assignment) assignments may get you but go to TA time and his office hours right away they all more than will to help. The first PA he will throw you in the deep end but you'll learn to be the strongest swimmer in the end.
Dr. Bernstein is by far the best educator I have had. The man is absolutely brilliant. He has taught at MIT and and Princeton, and he wound up at JMU because his wife teaches here too. The class is hard because for many students, CS149 is their first encounter with coding, but if you go to office hours, he'll be happy to help. Take this man's class
Professor Bernstein is the best teacher/professor I have ever had. He is super funny and sarcastic. While he may come off as hard to approach at first, he really cares about his students and is always willing to help. If you keep up with textbook reading and PA's the class is pretty easy and you will learn a lot.
Bernstein is an amazing man. He taught at MIT and Princeton and is a genius. He has won the most nurturing professor award 3 times and is a kind and gentle man. As long as you do not refer to Dounkin' Doughnuts as Dunkin' or Weight Watchers as WW you should be fine.
Professor Bernstein is just the greatest! He is a genius when it comes to Compter Science and keeps his lectures interesting with his hysterical jokes. Even though his presentations are on his website, I would still come to all his lectures because he gives a whole lot of information that's useful for PAs, exams, and to continue in the CS major.
Dr. David Howard Bernstein pHD, remember that name - every CS major at JMU should take this man at least once. Absolutely hilarious and has a really solid approach to teaching his courses. Went to him countless times in office hours for advice on things that had nothing to do with his course & he couldn't have been nicer.
Honestly my favorite CS professor I have ever had. He is hilarious and he cares deeply about everyone in his classes. The class is decently hard, but nothing BS, guidelines are clearly set, and he is willing to go above and beyond to help his students.
Best professor ever! definitely take him. He is always accessible outside of class, even when his office hours are over. He cares about you and tries to challenge you. His lectures are fun and he always has funny stories to tell. For the exams, you must study hard, they are not hard but not easy either.
He's incredibly smart, funny, and passionate. Favorite professor in the major hands down.
Good lectures, homework assignments, and exams. The group project sucked but that wasn't his fault. I definitely recommend taking him.
He's is an amazing professor! TAKE HIM! He is so smart, funny, and cares about his students. He will answer any question you have in depth and is very accessible outside of class.
I chose the professor based on his reviews but he is not the same. Hes quite a tough grader and very old school. Besides this, his assignments were ridiculous and riddled with many errors. You likely wont understand the task at hand unless you constantly ask for a re-explanation. Nearly everyone will need to repeat the course. Avoid at all costs
Blessed be thy name Bernstein. He is my absolute favorite teacher/professor of all time. Very down-to-earth and realistic guy with great wit and many stories to tell.
One of my favorite professors I've ever taken. He's really funny and extremely kind during office hours. Bernstein can be picky on small details but is very helpful especially when it comes to PA's.
The best professor I have taken at JMU. He is so funny and seems to really care about his students. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!! The exams are very specific but if you do the practice questions you will be fine.
Pretty easy A if you put in effort
I just finished my first semester at JMU and Professor Bernstein is my favorite professor at JMU so far. He is super funny but he also explains things very clearly and concisely. He will go on tangents occasionally but they're usually pretty funny and he'll still get through all the content, sometimes even a few minutes early. Highly recommend.
He is an amazing person. very funny, connects with his students, however his teaching method is not suitable for the subject matter. He was teaching a class in java and lectured the concepts very well but did not teach how to actually use them in code and did not provide clear instructions on the pas he assigned.
Very difficult but you learn so much. Class structure was nice. There is readings but they are online. They're not required but help a lot on the tests. So far this is the class that made me feel the most prepared for thew real world.
Loved Bernstein but he is the only 345 professor who gives a final. Also, the keep in mind that the group project is about the process and not the product.
Professor Bernstein is probably the reason I'm still majoring in Computer Science. He taught me so much back in CS159 so I decided to take his CS345 course, and it was the best choice I could have made. The class is difficult (as should be expected for all CS courses this level and beyond) but Bernstein made the whole thing very approachable.
Bernstein is a top-class lecturer and always very detailed, accurate, and to the point. His assignments reflect that as well, with each component carefully considered. Overall, he might come off as a little abrasive at first, but one quickly realizes that he cares deeply about the material and about the students he teaches.
Dr. Bernstein is one of the best professors in the CS department at JMU. His understanding of the material and his care for students who want to succeed is why he outperforms many of the other faculty. CS159 with him was great so long as you read his syllabus and proactively worked ahead.
Dr. Bernstein is a great professor. He is very hilarious and likes to tease his students. At the same time, he is very knowledge about the material about which he is teaching. My only issue is that his lecture can be a little stale as he mostly reads from a powerpoint. Kinda hard to write down notes about Multimedia, but even then, it was a blast.
Bernstein is very funny and cares a lot about his students. He tells stories during the lectures in the first half of the semester which keeps thing interesting. The first exam is pretty difficult, but the other assignments aren't too bad despite being tedious sometimes. He gives a lot of feedback for the group project, but he grades it leniently.
He's really funny and knows what he's doing. He comes off as mean but grades very fairly and is nice if you do ask for help. Overall a great professor and I'd love to take another class with him down the line. He uses a textbook but I didn't open it all semester and I did fine. Exams are easier than the sample questions.
Funniest CS professor and is brutally honest which is a great thing to get from a 159 professor. He's not the easiest professor by any means, but I think he does the best job of preparing you for future classes and your career.
Best professor for 345. Was able to give so many real world examples of topics in class because of his experience before becoming a professor. Also is extremely entertaining and makes you want to succeed. Take him if you can.
Professor Bernstein is a top-notch lecturer, humorous, and genuinely cares about his students. The class is challenging but manageable if you engage with the material and utilize resources like unstuck AI alongside the textbook.
Bernstein is the closest thing I have to a dad. Hes the best professor. Everyone should take him as many times as you can. Very smart and very good at teaching.
Funny, caring, smart. Go to the lectures, go to office hours. He says he's trying to retire soon, absolutely take him if at all possible. I skipped him for 345 and now wish I hadn't.
Personal Navigation Systems topic: Nice guy, pretty boring classes though. You can coast through the projects. Other than that you're only graded on tests, which are considerably difficult unless you attend class and pay attention in lecture. It's a relaxed course and super informative. I do not regret taking it at all :)
Dr. Bernstein is probably the best professor at JMU. He is one of the funniest guys I've ever met, he is so smart and has all these experiences and stories to relate the class material to the real world. His 345 may be my favorite class at JMU, and taking him is an unforgettable experience, thank you Dr. Bernstein
No habla Bernstein. He got stuck on a train once and I think that molded him into the hero he is today.
Bernstein is very helpful and extremely informative in his lectures, firsthalf is lecture, second half of the semester is the group project. Sometimes his feedback is vague but I honestly respect him extremely. His course really prepares you for the genuine workforce. DO your HWs, GO to office hours. IMPROVE your processes, Great guy
Baldstein here is a great guy, he just has a really hard class. The first thing you have to do is an entire review of Java in the first week which is pretty hard. The first half of the semester is lectures & the second half is group project. One group brought in a rotisserie chicken, apple cider, mashed potatoes and eggnog. He didn't care lol.
