David is sweet and a great professor, he really made class enjoyable and entertaining. :)
DON'T TAKE HIM ONLINE!!! He makes you read too much and he is not specific. He sucks.
His regular class durring the summer session was great his lectures were interesting and test were take home essay format.
I took his online govt course and he's kick butt. Don't know why anyone would say otherwise. He's just a good professor period. Pay attenton to descussion, read the headliners in the book and you're set.
Pay attention in class, take notes and you will do fine. He is very funny!!!!!
Dont take him early in the morning too much to handle!!
Asks any questions way to much
Very boring teacher, takes a different approach to govt. which to me is not a good one, all tests are take home essays, so if your good at writing this class could be for you. Very mono-tone. Bueller...Bueller...Bueller, or in his case does any body have any questions...questions...does anybody have any questions?
David ROCKS! I took 2302 just for the fun of it. He offers a differnet perspecitve on the government. He does ask if there are any questions but why is that a bad thing? Yes all of his test are take home essays (and generally youll write 2-3essays) but they are take home. I would take david for every class if i could .... DEATH SQUADS!!!
Hes probably the best teacher I've ever had. Essays aren't that bad if you put an effort into it. he reads over them if you want him to. if you want to stop living a totally ignorant life, you should probably take his class. he's not just teaching you govt from the book, but real life issues that we all need to deal with. I LOVE Mr. Birch. Got an A
I love Professor Birch. He is very informative and approaches government in a "real" way. He knows what he teaches and his way of teaching is very entertaining, in an intellectual way. I took GOVT 2302 with him also.
very monotone but easy. his tests are essay tests. He is funny and makes some of the material intertaining.
He's HILARIOUS. Kinda freaky at first, but I really ended up liking him. He repeats things enough times that you understand but not enough to make you want to slap somebody. No tests only take home essays. If you follow his [easy] directions you'll get a good grade! You have to show up for class bc they're all from notes. A tape recorder is smart!
I showed up for every class was on time and took lots of notes yet i still got a C for some reason. I busted my ass on the essays and somehow always got a crappy grade. Didnt take again and I wouldnt!
I love David! He's great. Dry sense of humor, seems to really care about what he's teaching. A completely reasonable person...ABSOLUTELY reccomend him to anyone and everyone.
Professor Birch is a good teacher. I took his short courses and was more then releaved to have him as the teacher. You have no tests, just essays which he goese over with you the day befor they are due so you know exactly what to write! The only thing that stinks is reading the novels, other then that GREAT!
Mr Birch was awesome. I really enjoyed his approach to online classes. He kept everyone involved and I felt as if I had attended his class in person. His essays threw at first, yet I managed to get through them.
Took him for 2301 and 2302. Learned alot. Don't take if you don't feel like going to class. Made me laugh.
Prof Birch was awesome. I took him this summer for Govt I and had signed up for his fall class on Govt II. Disappointed to see someone else teaching the class. He kept everyone involved online and that was a big plus.
No TESTS!!! Your tests are take home essays and he gives you plenty of time to write and e-mail them to him to edit them. You must record his lectures if not you will be lost! I haven't been in school for five years and this class is easy to me.
Prof. Birch is an excellent teacher. Take the class to expand your Knowledge. You will come out learning about government politics and politics in your everyday social life. He is knowledgeable and repeats himself so you get it. More examples would have been helpful. Lectures are detailed and good.Take notes. He will make a difference in your ife.
he is great. take him!
Great professor, really cares about his students! His class was fun and really made you think. There are no test, instead you write essays!
He has a passion for government and makes the class very interesting. There is never a dull moment.
Why doesn't the chili pepper appear on the rating of this professor that I checked on? He's a great teacher.
All around great guy. Very funny, very cooperative. Takes his course evaluations very seriously. No tests or quizes, just essays. Essays are minimum 1 page and worth 50 points each. Final essay is 150 points, reccomended 3+ pages. Record his lectures, take good notes, you may not even need the book.
I think this guy is a great teacher, he made you think and want to change things. He's awesome and if you want a really good teacher and all around good guy, this is him. You must take notes but he helps you in all ways except giving you what you don't work for. I wish he taught more classes, I would take another one with him.
Professor Birch is great and really cares about his students! Even if you have little to no interest in poiltics he will make the call interesting, I learned a lot and can't wait to take him for 2302.
I took him last summer and I thought he was funny and interesting, but his class was odd. He teaches it more like and upper-level political science class. He has essays instead of tests, which I normally wouldn't mind, but the topics were weird.
Pretty theoretical, class seems to be mostly for majors. Teaches book material, not really interesting stuff, just foundations. Good at conveying the some of the seemingly abstract material. Good teacher, boring class.
Tests are out of class essays. Work hard and you will see results. I enjoyed this class.
Birch is a great teacher! Made the class interesting but a lot of notes. Tests are out of class essays, which if you take the notes, you will have no problem with the essay. Take him even if you don't have an interest in political science but have to take Government. Can't wait to take him next semester!!
This class was the best class I have ever had. I had him for summer 2008 and he made the class very interesting. There are no quizzes, just take home essays for the test. I recommend to write more than the minimum for the essays. I suggest taking the class. If you listen to him, you will do good on the essays.
I honestly hated this class. Birch was my least favorite teacher this semester. He made us watch some stupid boring movie in class that had basically nothing to do with what we were learning. Oh yeah and he made us watch Dr. Seuss...that was ok haha. Also he gives you crap if you wanna leave on time or even 3 minutes early. Literally.
He can get pretty monotone which causes you to doze off in class, but if you can stick through it then you will do fine. No quizzes. Tests are out of class essays. These are bs essays either. MOre like papers. Just listen and be there and you'll do fine.
Very personable. He will go out of his way to help you. Just ask, he'll go beyond help. Tests are pretty intense but they're manageable if you go to class and listen. Some say he has a monotone voice, but I think it's comical. Take this professor if you need GOVT. Let him know you enjoy Hendrix and Zepplin! TANSTAAFL!
GET THIS GUY IF YOU HAVE TO KILL TO DO SO! His lectures make completely abstract thinking crystal clear. He uses hilarious examples from government to explain his points. I got a terrible grade in 1301, then I switched to David and I'm making high A's. Don't miss a chance to take this class. (By the way, you're welcome for the pepper, Prof!)
Birch is a great teacher! There are no tests just written essays that you get to write at home. Go to class and take good note because the essays are directly from the notes, you do not need a book
Very good at lectures. Essays are a challenge if you don't pay attention.
he's a really good professor..actually makes government bearable..no tests just essay sets that can be done at home..days prior to turning the essays he goes over them in detail.
Amazing teacher. Easy to pass. No tests. Take home essays that replaace test. Easy to get an A.
Great!
He is hot for the subject of Government.
Great teacher and makes it easier to learn government
Great teacher and makes it easier to learn government and there are essays not tests
Makes no sense in word choice, goes completely off track, when I asked for help he didn't even give it to me. Very picky of length and guidelines. We don't take tests we write papers instead which is difficult to do. He needs to explain things much more thoroughly.
kinda boring but essays aren't bad
Makes government bearable by using ineresting topics. Essays are easy, just take good notes and follow he instructions. NO tests, quizzes, or homework: other than the essays you do on your own time.
AMAZING TEACHER!! One of the best I have ever had! He makes this class fun and easy to learn. He gives NO exams, instead he does everything via essay. If you take good notes and pay attention this class is easy..he goes out of his way to help you in any way he can and is extremely understanding! Loved him..I took the fast track for 2301 and ende
VERY EASY!! I took both his 2301 & 2302 classes fall semester. Make sure you go to class and take notes and you'll do fine on his essays. Just make sure you like to write before choosing his class, his essays are 8 page minimums. I would highly recommend him.
The class was extremely boring and awkward, but the teaching is pretty good. If you don't mind his insecurity about students paying attention and a theoretical class meant for majors, go ahead and take this class. There are no tests, just essays you do outside of class to turn in when they're due, 4 pages min. each, two essays per section.
Fast tracked this class. Great professor. Don't underestimate the essays. Taking very detailed notes helped big time with the essays. Each essay set is a min of 8 pages. He is very thorough with info he gives. Thought he was pretty easy when it came to grading. He's hilarious but if you don't like sarcastic, dry humor, you probably won't like him.
Take good notes, literally word for word what he says...and there is your essay. I made a perfect score on each essay and an A in the class.
I dont like writing papers if I dont have to, but I actually enjoyed writing for this class. Govt has never been my subject but Birch made it very fun to attend class. If you like dry humor and can take really good notes, I would take him. I would reccomend taking him very much so.
One of the best teachers ever! Yes the essays are a little hard if left until the last min but if you take good notes and follow them you're all set for the essay. Prof Birch makes the class fun and interesting and treats each student with the respect you give him and makes time anyone outside of class and offers to proof read before grading!!
Took a fast track of 2301 and 2302. One of my favorite profs ever. Take good notes, get essays from notes and add info in from the textbook. Not a hard class if you just go to class, take notes and do the work. Very very funny and nice prof. Definitely recommend him.
Professor Birch is amazing!!! Great teacher. He makes the class so much fun..you will walk away learning something from him whether you intended to or not. There are no tests given, just essays assigned. You will want to come to this class!Show him that you are trying to understand the information he will do anything and everything to help you pass :)
If you are not a big fan of writing then this class is not for you. you have to write 4, 4 pages essays and another essay that should be around 10 to 16 pages. I found this class somewhat difficult because i hate writing but still managed to get an A. He grades easy, but if your essays are less then the required about you will get a 0.
im taking his class this semester. i hate writing essays so this class is difficult for me but i do like his teaching. he makes everything clear and is very willing to help you. oh and he's good looking for an old guy!
I just finished his course. He was very clear in class so if you used what he told you and put them in your essays you should get a good grade.
HE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR THAT I HAVE EVER HAD.JUST LOVE THE WAY HE TEACHES.IF U LOVE TO WRITE PAPERS THEN THIS IS YOUR CLASS.YOU NEED TO PAY ATTENTION IN HIS CLASS AND TAKE GOOD NOTES,IF YOU DO THAT YOU ARE SURE TO GET AN A.HE IS THERE TO HELP YOU AT ALL TIMES.WHENEVER YOUR STUCK WITH SOME THINGS,HE WILL ALWAYS HELP.
I took his class for 1301 & 1302 on a "fast track". Enjoyed both classes. I highly recommend him. But, beware, he requires you to write a minimum 4 page essays instead of giving exams. Very helpful. Provides you with everything you need to get an "A". Show up and take notes and you will succeed. Essays can be easily written from the notes.
Funny prof. Essays are kinda long and a pain, but if you take notes and are in class when he reviews what should be in your essay, then you should have no problem getting an A. I was told that there were no tests, but this past semester he added multiple choice tests. They were easy - all open book and you could correct your mistakes.
I used to dread government classes, but Prof. Birch completely turned me around. He gave me a real world understanding of government for the first time. He's not only a fantastic teacher, but obviously a great person. I highly reccommend him and I loved leaning from him. I think Prof. Birch has a wonderful mind and wish him only the best. -AP
Very awesome professor!! He is friendly, has a great sense of humor, makes everything clear. Gorgeous smile too =)U just have to take notes & pay attn...but then again it's not hard to pay attn when u have a super hot professor. 2 bad he only teaches govt., def. recommend him!
Essay driven professor. Kewl dude...and KNOWS his material....He lives and breathes governmental politics. Very helpful....welcomes [yet looks fwd to] feedback and in class discussions! Great sense of humor...how's that work'n for ya...we good here!! AWESOME, take his course if you can!
I love government and did not enjoy this class at all. He is very one sided and not open to other views. If your views are the same as his, then you'll be fine. He is very unfair and at times disrespectful to students.
I LOVE HIM, FAVORITE CLASS EVER IN MY LIFE. I took him of both of my govt classes, and have never been so interested.
Extremely clear about what he wants. Follow instructions and you should get an A. Essays are a HUGE pain, wouldnt recommend this class to anyone who struggles with writing. Take notes, write down every single word that comes out of his mouth, it will be useful in the essays.
This guy is funny and quirky. He makes class interesting but also makes you think. His essay's could be difficult if you miss class, but he does go over the essays before they are due.
Professor Birch is an excellent professor. He managed to take a subject that I didn't care too much about and make it interesting. Participation is a big part of Birch's class. He loves being asked questions and having students become involved in the subject. He is kinda monotone though, so if you're class doesn't get involved it can become boring.
I was honored to have this professor. He has a lot to offer and expects some in return, but more teachers should follow his example. Students become lazy and put in little effort and learn very little. This teacher leaves an imprint on the students that carries on for a lifetime. I am only disappointed that I won't get to take his 2302 class.
Hate government, loved this class. David makes a boring subject interesting and understandable. Wish he taught every subject, would definitely recommend him.
Although attendance isnt mandatory it is in your best interest to go or you WILL fall behind. Buy an audio recorder, dont let your phone ring, pay attention, dont have an attention span of a gnat and youll ace the class. Instead of tests he has essays 6-8 pages long. He's hilarious and jokes around with students. Irrational people should stay away.
Great class to take if you don't want a lot of homework (only 5 assignments all semester). Although attendance isn't mandatory, you should still go. Attending is to your benefit!!Birch is very animated during lecture and makes the time seem to fly by.
Best government teacher ever Birch is helpful and hilarious
He is very educated in this subject no doubt, but I could not understand his lecturers. If you have one hint of confusion your lost for the entire semester, he speaks and writes on the board which is changeling because he is saying so much information at once. If you understand Gov on your own take his class, if not don't. He grades very hard.
Summer 11/Spring 12 -I was able to take his class...and he was just as consistent, helpful, thorough in GOVT 2301. He's HIGHLY recommended, so if ur able 2 get in, do so. Class is essay driven, if ur not a writer, this may be a slight challenge 4 u!
he is kind of quirky but is a great prof. he is willing to help as long as you let him know. the book is a dread but other than that the class is not bad.
Took David for govt I&II. There's 2 take home essay sets&a final, NO tests!! Essays are lengthy, but he's a great lecturer and provided plenty info. He offers to read over essays before the due date, which I highly recommend, it'll make it an easy A! Don't let your phone go off in his class and you're off to a good note!
He is Mr. Mackey from South Park!!! He looks and sounds JUST like him! In all seriousness though, there are four 4-6 page essays and one 20 page essay at the end. That sounds like a lot but there are NO tests or quizzes. Just papers. That's it! He gives you everything you need to know for the essays. Just show up to class! BTW he is hilarious!
I took him for 2301 and 2302 a few semesters ago. I love him! He is very inspiring and a fantastic teacher! If I had to take any courses he taught again I would 100% take him. He is funny, and knows his stuff!
Great instructor! Lectures and notes are extremely important, so pay attention, be a part of the lecture and you'll do great! I would take him again for sure!
Easy to understand lectures and has a good personality. Passionate at what he teaches but his papers are tiring. three major papers minimum 10 pages each but if you dont do them at the last minite (Like I did) then the class should go smoothly. Also you can e-mail any question or part of your paper and he will respond the same day.
Professor Birch definately knows his stuff! But this is not a class to slack off in. Notes are very important, and they are always crystal-clear.
This professor is extremely helpful! The class is a lot of hard work but as long as you take good notes and get the textbook you will be fine. There are no tests in this class but 3 long essays. So if you don't like writing essays then don't take the class.
If you want to learn ANYTHING about government, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I learned more by just reading the textbook, the class itself is a waste of time. He does not care at all about his students and he is very sarcastic and rude. His teaching ethics are horrible, he basically repeats the same nonsence in every class.
*NOTE* This class isn't something to slack off in. I like the guy he's funny and not that bad of a teacher. You however will not pass this class slacking off. Your best bet is to voice record his class then you will have a million times easier time in the class.
no no no don't do it. All you do is write and it sucks I have lost sleep over this professor because he has too high of standards.
Prof Birch is hilarious & very sarcastic. I took him for an 8am for Spring 2014 and he definitely kept everyone awake and engaged. You'll do well if you go to class and pay attention. The only grades in the class are essays but he spends several days reviewing them before they're due to make sure you'll do well on them. Definitely take him!
This class is not for the weak willed when it comes to essays. He gives essays rather than tests, 3 essay sets of 2 for 3 pages each. The Final is an essay as well but it is 50% of the overall class grade. Professor is very clear and if you have any questions he will hash them out with you until you get it.
Very clear about what he expects. Essays are straight from the book. Would recommend if writing is easy for you.
Birch explicitly says what he expects from you and what the course is about. Yeah, there are four essays you must write, but as long as you repeat exactly what he says, while giving your own opinion, you'll ace it. He LOVES classroom feedback. Ask tons of questions. Follow the syllabus. Use examples from textbook for your essays.
The most rational of non-rational people. Lessons are set up to write your papers for you. If you take good notes and listen in class you basically have you outline for each major essay (3 of them). Smart dude who teaches to smart folks.
I absolutely loved this class. he is a GREAT professor.. If you show up and take note you will do well. I would take him again!!!!
Excellent professor. I've taken Professor Birch twice now and this time was by chance. Due to scheduling I took another professor that fell ill and Professor Birch stepped in. Just like the first time, it was easy to understand and fun. I would recommend taking Professor Birch.
At the end of each section, there was a test. However, you would have to turn in your section essay on test day also. So there was a test AND an essay for every section. The lectures sucked as far as truly learning about GOVT, but are AWESOME because he repeatedly tells you how to do every essay, and answers most test questions. VOICE RECORDER!
When you first get into his class, you might think you've gotten yourself into something you don't want to be in. Trust me, I've been there. Mr. Birch may seem rude in front of the class, but he's always there if you need to ask him anything. Talk to him after class, or even at his office, and he's a completely different person. Much nicer!
Prof. Birch has some good things to say, but sometimes it takes some excavation and clarifying questions for him to say his main points. He's funny at times, which makes the class interesting. Ask lots of questions - he really wants to have you communicate with him.
I took both GOVT 2305 & 2306 in the same semester and Birch allowed me to write one paper for both classes because they're so similar. I love that man! His lectures are all over the place and he's not a linear thinker. The hardest part was organizing his lectures to write the paper. Didn't use the book, but it will help if you're having a hard time
Excellent Professor. Assignments were straightforward and simple provided you actually show up to class and pay attention. He literally spoon feeds you the essays, all you have to do is give him the attention he deserves.
I took Professor Birch for Government 2305 and 2306. From Federal Government to Texas Government the criteria is VERY similar. His lectures are long, and usually they go the whole time, but he's a great professor! There are so surprises. The assigned essays are where the grades mainly come from. Do the work, record the lectures, and you'll get an A
Unclear directions, he's like the professor from South Park. His lectures are really long and impossible to follow.
I don't understand how people can complain about this course. It's the EASIEST class I've ever taken. Bring a laptop and your phone. Record his lectures! If you type exactly what comes out of his mouth, your essay will pretty much be done. If you don't, good luck. Also, you take his tests home. If you don't pass this class you aren't even trying.
Prof Birch is the one of the easiest teachers I've taken. All you need is a recorder that can be your phone. The test is fairly easy if you pay attention in class the essay part is lengthy (about 5pgs). I did not buy the book you don't need it. Show up and interact with him. He has funny dry humor you get used to. Easy teacher and a lenient grader
Professor Birch is a great Government professor. He is has a sense of humor and he can be sarcastic in a humurous way. The course can be intense only because it is a six week summer course. The essays are not difficult at all as long as you record his lectures, read the textbook, and look over the lecture notes. I enjoyed the his lectures.
Hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. Professor Birch made government fun to learn about. Real funny guy and easy to get along with. Makes it clear what he expects from you. Go to class, take the notes, and you should be just fine! If I could take him for every subject, I would! He gives take home tests so use them for the essays!
Professor Birch is a very straightforward professor who outlines exactly what he expects from you in his syllabus. There are no quizes, only tests in the form of 5 page essays with multiple choice questions (both of which are take-home). He outlines each essay the class before it is due, which is great. He also has an amazing sense of humor.
Really enjoyed being in his class. If you are open in discussion you will learn better, don't just sit there and listen, engage in conversation with him. Looking forward to another class taught by him.
Professor Birch is very straight to the point. 5 major Essays, no test, Lecture is heavy so you must be in class, highly recommend you record his lessons. i would def. take him again but not early in the morning and i will def. pay attention more. books are needed, we used the textbook for all the Essays.
Definitely go to his lectures, because the concepts he taught were very eye opening. Rather than flipping through the curriculum page by page in the very expensive textbook, he does utilize the material but without spitting the words that you read back at you. Must attend class to obtain this full understanding needed to write his papers.
His class is hard but as long as you do the papers the way HE wants you to do them it shouldn't be a problem. do NOT let him scare your off at the start of the course he is a great professor and the people who stayed in our class are all glad they did. I am taking him again next semester. great choice!
Professor Birch is an amazing professor! Don't let is dry humor and sarcasm get to you: his lectures are knowledgable and he's easy to understand. He encourages conversations in the classroom, and always has handouts ready. He is very specific with what he wants for the essays, and the book is absolutely mandatory. Would definitely take him again.
I must have gotten like a 99.75 in that class... Easiest class I have ever taken. That does not mean you don't have to work for it. You get the grade that u deserve. He is willing to review all essays before u have to official turn them in, so there is literally no excuse to not get a 95+ in his class... Also essay intensive so get ready to write.
By far the most hilarious professor I have ever met in my two years at Lone Star College. He makes government sound interesting and funny. He uses the phrase "Okey dokey." He used Homer Simpson as an example and drew it to how people like Homer make government dysfunctional. There are four 5-page essays. Make sure to follow his exact directions!
I had Birch for GOVT2305 and 2306; I throughly enjoyed him for both. He doesn't give any tests, however he does require 4 or 5 papers that determine your grade. His 5 page minimum requirement isn't difficult IF you show up and take notes. He gives you plenty of information for well over 5 pages.
Professor Birch made government really interesting. There are no exams but there are four essays total. The essays are required to be the minium of five pages but I always end up with more than that because it is a lot of information. It is funny how he did a Homer Simpson's voice and how used him as an example of bring non- rational.
He's a great guy and teaches pretty well. A little vague on specific essay instructions but overall is fine. Could still improve his level of instruction when it comes to essays.
Confused in beginning but easy class and funny professor. I recommend recording his lectures, doesn't provide notes but does give handouts to use for your essays. He doesn't give out tests or assignments but assigns 4 essays as your only grades. He loves to repeat himself, and LISTEN to his outline rules. If you don't he will return your essay.
If you dont like taking tests or have text anxiety he is the professor for you! 4 essays and he tells you exactly what needs to be on it. Come to class it will help! Overall very helpful and if you come to class you will pass.
Very funny professor with no tests or quizzes. There are 4 essays only, which are easy if you attend the lectures and listen. He gives you an essay outline to follow which makes this class fool proof. Very funny guy who uses phrases like "Okey dokey." and "Otay." Taking him again next semester for Texas Government.
Very funny sarcastic guy, very understanding and works with you. He doesn't do tests he did 3 long 5 page essays when i last took him
PARTICIPATE IN HIS CLASS he hates when no one talks to him and will never stop complaining about it. He rants about how close he is to retirement everyday as well. No tests, only 4 essays that he gives you an outline for. Pretty straight forward but lectures are hard to sit through.
Pretty simple class. No tests, just 4 essays with specific format!. Don't skip class or you'll miss a lot of information. Most of the information for the essays came from notes but also from the textbook and handouts. Professor Birch is a good teacher and passionate about political science. Recommend taking him for govt
There's no test. Just 3 essays worth 100 pt., and a final essay worth 150 pt. So if you're relatively good at writing essays, take this class. If you don't skip, you'll have all the info you need for each essay and more. I forgot to turn in one essay, and still made an A. So I think he drops one of the essays but doesn't tell anyone.
Birch is a funny guy, only 4 essays, seriously are not hard, he gives you the exact layout he wants, gives handouts as well, just take good notes and you'll be good. He has a dry sense of humor, but I honestly enjoyed it. Great professor honestly, don't let him scare you away, AND PLEASE TALK IN CLASS. he likes participation.
Prof. Birch is a character, but he grows on you. His class isn't hard at all. I literally wrote my essays the day before they were due and made 100s on them. Just record his lectures & type out everything he says. Easy A. Don't bother getting the books either. You won't need them at all. You just HAVE to show up to class and record his lectures.
David Birch is a fantastic professor. Sarcastic and with a dry wit, Professor Birch's professor's are very entertaining. He's a little fast, so you need to record his essay's. Don't let his mannerism's fool you: he's caring for his students, flexible for assignments, and has very clear guidelines. No tests; just 4 section essays and a final.
Birch is just a cool guy. He cares about his students and is there to help. He is a very sarcastic person but in an extremely funny way. Record his lectures and youll be good. No tests, only four essays and a final essay. If you pay attention to what he says in class he basically writes the essay for you. Take this class hes a great teacher.
Ugh. Only take this prof if you want to be bored and lost. His lectures are confusing, wandering, and unfocused. I also got tired of the repetition and constant harping about participation. And his sarcasm gets old fast. Sure, you can do fine if you follow the spoonfeeding for the essays, but its not worth it to sit through the class all semester.
Prof. Birch knows what he is talking about. Record his lectures and play them back. You have 4-5 papers and easy online homework for hybrid. If you read the chapters and listen to lectures, you know exactly what to put in your paper. He provides an outline that provides beginning and end text. You must try VERY HARD to fail. Love the sarcasm.
Great professor, i took him for both US and Texas government. No in class tests or HW. Just papers you write based on his lectures and textbook notes. His lectures are long but he breaks down everything to a simplified concept. Lots of writing notes and paying attention, funny, attendance isn't required BUT you dont want to miss a single day.
He will give you ALL the information you need to pass his class, but he wasn't the professor for me. I missed class & still did fine on the essays. He has a dry wit and wants participation. on't be afraid to ask questions. I don't feel like he taught the material as much as he just gave handouts for you to follow. It's a fail-proof class.
Overall he's a good professor. Only a few issues. First, some of his grading criteria for essays is subjective. The only other issue is how heavily biased he is with his political views. It's evident in most of his provided materials and a bit questionable given his position in a political science course.
took a 4 week online class. very clear about what he wanted! posted short lecture videos which were very helpful! 10/10 would recommend!
I LOVED THIS CLASS!!!! Only 4 essays! NO HW OR TEST OR QUIZZES. Very Easy. He outlined most of your essay and all you had to do was copy and paste
Great
I think professor Birch is a good guy but his class got really boring, really quick. I took his class in the fall semseter and after the thanksgiving break i only showed up once and that was to attend the final. His lectures have no clear subject and he wanders often. There's no real focus to them whatsoever.
Lets starts off by saying hes pretty funny but also monotone. But idk its good somehow? Second hes a liberal, hates on Chick-fil-A, and makes fun of HEB and Whataburger. So if thats gonna irritate you then too bad. Hes not from Texas and he makes fun of Texans a lot but its funny. Love him one of my best professors yet!
I loved having Birch as a professor. He's hilarious, sarcastic, and loves participation. Participate and you won't hear jokes every fifteen minutes about the class's silence. I learned things every class. Oh also, he checks these reviews and sometimes mentions them in class. Overall, participate and *follow the template*!!
If you are more of an auditory learner, then this is the class for you. You will need the textbook because his essays are reflected on it. In the whole semester, we only had four essays and inquisitive to do. If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask him. P.S Beware of his lectures, if you don't participate, the gypsies will come to get you.
Professor Birch is a very good teacher, it's really and easy A with him. The only thing is that he is Liberal and he is PRETTY obvious with it, he won't give you neutral material, he will give you his Liberal material. Also, he makes fun of texans every time he can, so if you're sensitive don't take him. Copy the book and handouts for the essays.
This teacher seemed really easy, however, I ended up dropping his class because it was SO confusing. There were 30+ assignments to read on top of the chapters of the book and then you have to write a paper, and it was very confusing to figure what he wanted you to write about and how to get the information when there is so much reading material.
Yes, you have some papers to write but he gives you an exact outline of what he wants you to write about, and does many video lectures basically writing the paper for you. No test, no quizzes. I would definitely take this class again. He is seriously the best teacher! Very caring, and responds quickly. By far one of my favorite teachers! Trust me!
Professor Birch is a great professor. No tests and no quizzes. There are papers but he provides an outline of what the paper should be about. I would definitely recommend.
Great teacher, wonderful person, and very intelligent. Easy to follow his course as long as you pay attention to his interesting lectures.
For someone who doesn't care for and has a hard time with government, I got a lot out of this class. Great professor!
Professor Burch does an amazing job at explaining difficult concepts within government. His grading comes from essays so make sure to understand the material enough to write about it. He is very involved and his primary interest is to make sure the students understand the concept.
Professor Birch was my first college professor and he was GREAT!! Outside of class we had readings, and were only graded on papers (5 total). Just take notes, participate verbally during (very engaging + funny) lectures, read and cite the textbook, prove you understand, and he's a happy professor. 10/10 would recommend. We love Professor Birch. <3
Birch gives a heavy amount of writing assignments for a survey course; but the thing that gets me the most is how quite he is. The speakers on my computer arent enough to hear him, I have to use headpones on full blast just to understand him this is made more difficult given that his class is lecture dependent.
Great course and Professor. I found everything to be easy to follow and Prof. Birch limited chapters of book so no "fluff" reading required. Excellent video lectures. Everything you need is in the lectures, handouts, and syllabus. Flexible office hours. Follow the template/send him your drafts A+ no HW just essays. not hard if paying attention
Took a 4 week online. Theres a 4-8 page essay due EVERY week. Also 2 mandatory response topics & 5 student choice response topics that you have to work on while also writing the essays. If you have a job/full course load, do not take him. VERY disorganized D2L format, hard to navigate. Answers emails quickly and seems nice, but wouldnt recommend.
He does give many papers but they are easy if you read the textbook. I liked his class I definitely would recommend and I will definitely be joining another class of his. Also no tests just papers.
Take him!! I took Prof. Birch for 2305/2306 - excellent Prof! Great lectures and plenty of material provided to be successful. Very accessible/responsive with office hours available 2x week. Work ahead if you want to. Grade is 4 essays and 10 response topics - no other fillers/"fluff". Follow the easy to use TEMPLATE+listen to lectures easy A.
I took the 8 week class, strictly papers ONLY. 4 Module papers 5-8 pages each, 5 student response topics 1-2 pages, and 2 mandatory response papers 2+ pages. If you have a heavy course load I wouldn't recommend taking his class at the same time, unless it's in the summer or the only class. He is a fair grader, but you MUST meet page minimum.
I took his online TX Gov class in 6 weeks. I know next to nothing about government (I'm a science major) but this class was surprisingly painless. Prof Birch is clear in his assignments and grades more for participation and understanding of the material. There are quizzes, but he lets you try twice. The tests were not too bad. overall, great prof.
Professor Birch is the best government professor I've ever had He actually made me like politics. Before taking his class I had no interest in government Something about the way he teaches it makes it interesting You do have to write 6 5-8 pages essays but no homework or tests.8 week course. Recommend online. No need to read EVERYTHING. book online
he provides very structured homework criteria! if you follow it, youll pass easy. funny guy, too. he doesnt want you to fail and he offers to give you feedback on papers before you turn it in.
This class was extremely confusing. You NEED to have the time to juggle 5-8 paged essays. No room for improvement.
I have taken many online classes and this was the MOST confusing class ever. 300+ handouts. He is unclear on what he wants, scatterbrained, and I'm pretty sure he rates himself on here. He is not a good online teacher, maybe in person but I doubt it. Only 6 papers but the most stressful class this semester. Save your sanity, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
highly recommend! very clear grading criteria and is available outside of class for help. the lectures are long but he makes writing his papers so easy. textbook is required, but i barely used it.
Very confusing. only essays. templates were helpful. was kind of rude when emailed for questions and kept answers very short, maybe 1-5 words which wasn't helpful. very big vocab when talking, didn't make much sense. d2l set-up was very confusing and overwhelming. you have to teach yourself with his set-up. sticks to syllabus. he is always right...
overall awesome prof! responded to emails in under an hour; very understanding when I got sick & gave me extra time to finish my paper. pretty easy grader. wait until classes start to buy the textbook! I got the wrong version at first. 6 total essays. lots of articles & handouts to go thru but it's not hard unless you procrastinate :) go for it!
Birch is a good professor, whether you like his class is a matter of preference. Assignments consist solely of 3-5- or 5-8-page essays, that require A LOT of material to be read. His course organization tends to be a little confusing, but content is sorted by essay so you can find what you need. He is a funny guy and I do like his lens on govt.
I took Birch's online GOVT 2306 class and love the class and him. The only grades he takes are essays and you only have 6 or 7 of them. He is an easy grader. Watch the videos he makes and include the things he talks about in your essays and you will be fine. I wrote all essays within 2 days of it needing to be turned in and got almost all 100's.
It may be confusing at first, and he gives a lot of content for you to look up, however, if you like writing, the class will be easy for you. I took an 8-week course, and he assigned one, 3-5 page essay, and four 5-8 page essays. He gives amazing lectures that make you understand how government works. You can send him rough drafts.Really passionate
Professor Birch is the definition of hate filled rhetoric. He does nothing but mock and degrade those who do not share his political views. He is a classic narcissist. Do yourself a favor and take the class with someone who can at least differentiate between people and their political views.
Professor Birch only grades by 5 essays. There is no room for extra credit, so make sure your essays meet his standards (which are relatively low, as he is a more than a fair grader). First Module essay must be 3-5 pages long, Second-Fifth essays must be 5-8 pages. He provides a lot of handouts to help with the essays, so don't let that worry you!
Professor Birch is straight to the point and very simple about what he expects from you. There are only 5 essays that you have to write throughout the entire course, no tests or quizzes. You have plenty of time to finish them. The contents may seem overwhelming but you will find that there are just many duplicate documents.
16 pages due each month, seriously. To make it worse, you are only graded by those papers so if you're not a writer, you're screwed. Very confusing class format, posted 100+ unorganized documents. Furthermore, he gives degrading feedback on essays. Wanna feel bad after spending sleepless nights writing a single paper? You're in the right class.
He's been one of my favorite professors, I took both 2305&2306. Everything you'll ever need to succeed in his class is presented to you on a golden platter, the answers are in his lectures and D2L. He only requires 5 essays, and you have an adequate amount of time to complete them; it's impossible to fail if you're actively paying attention.
Grades come from 8 page essays and a lot of the material he gives is repetitive. Will give feed back on essays if emailed and gives structured essay format. The first essay he failed me because I had citations. The second essay he told the class THREE days before its was due that it had to be 8 pages (not 4 like the first) with no extension.
Gave me an F on an 8 paged essay just because I added a cover letter. Tough grader. I just ended up dropping the course altogether. Just horrible, I do NOT recommend Prof Birch!
Professor Birch's GOVT2306 class is straightforward - just 5-6 essays with no tests or quizzes. While the workload may seem daunting, his lectures and templates make it manageable. I found Unstuck ai really helpful for essay prep.
