Not A good class. He makes you write a lot of papers and doesn't help you mcuh.
Class isn't too bad, you have to do a couple essays and write responses to readings which should be a given for this kind of class.
thats bull that he doesnt help you...every other class period is spent in the computer lab where he practically writes your papers for you...hes tough on attendance though, so if you dont like going to class dont take birchman...its not too bad of a class
No Comments
His class is pretty easy as long as you do all the papers and read the one novel that you are assigned
Easy as long as you do the papers and go to class. If you dont like going to class every day, don't take him.
Good guy. Have a basic command of the english language and you will do fine. Highly recommend
We all dread english, but this guy is the best. i just graduated from high school and didnt know anything and hated english, and i took Birchmann over the summer and im so happy i did. He is very easy going and helpful and i learned so much from him!!!!
He is an okay teacher. I find the class boring since I'm an English nut and he talks and talks. I've not had any problems teaching wise, but he's taken cheap pot shots at my political affiliation. Not cool at all.
I took every one of his english classes I enjoyed his teaching method so much.
he's clear in class abot what he wants, but not when it comes to your papers. He knows a lot; he's good for the absolute way to write every type of paper
He makes you read your work in front of the whole class and then criticizes you and allows the other students to do so as well. The learning environment is uncomfortable if you aren't already a great writer. He teaches to the more experienced students. He also plays favorites.
Overall he is is good teacher. He is a very approachable guy and he praises creativity. Just think of a creative idea for the expository essays and its a grade A paper! Pretty easy class but you learn all you need to know!
If you show up to all classes, and express interest, he'll like you. Not an easy grader when it comes to essays, only 5 essays assigned. Attendance matters! I'd take him again. Good sense of humor.
Don't take him in the morning is my one recommendation. Hes boring, and its really hard to stay awake if you take him at 8am! He teaches the subject, but if you dont already have an interest in it, then its not made interesting.
He is a very average teacher. Do the work and show up to class and you will do fine.
Easy to get B.Has a unique way of teaching.Highly recommend.Take Honors...same stuff.Couple essays, read two books(short), and 1 project(easy).
A lot of work to do, but keeps you busy, not overwhelmed. Good help with questions, butbe sure to attend all classes! Little boring, but interesting work.
He knows wherefore he speaks. Verbosity he will chide, but it do get you places in his book. He's interesting if you listen. If you don't, then don't expect to get what you ain't paying for. Simple enough. Want to learn to write half decent? The man's published, 'nuff said.
He grades unfair. If he doesn't agree with your opinion on your essay, he will rewrite it to his opinion. I know I write A papers and i have gotten 5 C's. His class is boring. He is not very smart and will rewrite your essay with false facts if he thinks your's are wrong. DON'T TAKE HIM.
All I have to say is two things; when you write for this guy have a CLEAR thesis, and two; write lots in your rough drafts whether you throw most of it away or not and you will be fine. This guy does roll call too but he's tolerant of opinions.
By far the most boooring teacher in the world. It's pretty easy to pass his class, but there are some weird and uncomfortable projects that he makes you do with another person in the class that he pairs you with. He isn't very open minded with students essays. He either likes it or doesn't.
He is a horrible teacher. Not helpful at all!Don't take him you will regret it. Either he likes you or he doesnt. Once he doesnt that really means goodbye to your grade dont take him very bad move i hate that class hellllllll
He is terrible! He talks funny, gives you useless assignments and would rather you know what act and scene a line from othello is in than have you understand the meaning. His midterm was crap and his idea of teaching poetry is having you memorize a poem. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!

Those who've done well in his class really get English. Those who sucked are quick to blame their incompetence on the prof. Silly babies, stop belly-aching, college isn't daycare. So what if it's only community college? Should Birchman expect less from you than the average university prof.? Go back to grade school! Come back when you're literate.
i thought he was a cool teacher....very easy class.
total moron
hes super boring...and kinda of an ass...like hes very logical and anyone whos not logical...have fun...because he will be an ass...and ignore you
borrrinnngg...i left half way through....like its fun because u read kids storys...lol but other the then that.
He was a pretty cool guy, but his class could get boring and repetitive.
I am kindof lethargic about the whole class. He was open to my highly opinionated and persuasive style of writing, but that's the only attribute I can really say he has. The class subject, the 50's, was interesting and we watched movies on it, but still... He just kindof seemed to have this superiority about him I didn't like.
He is a pretty bad teacher. He's pretty full of himself and doesn't really take other people's opinions into consideration. He grades based a lot on his own opinion. He isn't very helpful and he doesn't make his assignments clear. I had him for compostion and he would rather read a creative paper that lacked substance. Avoid him if you can.
He's not a bad teacher, he's just really picky about the type of essay to write, once you get a hang of what HE wants you to write like, then it's not so bad. I might be a little biased because I did rather well in his class, but all in all he's not a horrible teacher. I'm taking Mo1CH from him next semester, so I guess I'll comment again after that
this teacher... he changes my thesis alot. which means that he changes my WHOLE PAPER just because he doesn't like the topic i'm writing about. He's done this to a few other students in the class too. Don't take M01 from him. He's too opinionated and thinks that everyone who has a different opinion is wrong.
Not an easy class, but a great one. He really will take the time to listen to you and help you out. My writing improved, I met some great people, and Birchman wrote me a college reccomendation letter. Not afraid to share his liberal political views so he could offend some people.
I though he was a pretty good teacher. He seemed to like me though, I did notice that other people struggled with him. As long as you write about something your interested (like I did) it always seemed to come out good and he graded them good. just do all the essays and you'll be fine.
Pretty easy class if writing comes easily to you. Even if it doesn't, your writing will improve. Be sure to have drafts done on time as each is only a few points but it can add up. He's very friendly but very liberal with his views and made a few off color jokes, but still a very jovial guy.
Very helpful teacher. A bit picky with his grading but a very good man. He actually makes class interesting.
he likes to change your thesis and if you dont write about something he likes he wont like the paper. would change the thesis there for change your whole paper and is very discouraging. dont take him. but it is good if u like to write and write about serious topics. also if your a liberal
THIS TEACHER SUCKS!!! HE IS BORING AND HARD. FIVE ESSAYS AND GRADES HARD YOU DON'T REALLY LEARN ANYTHING TAKE GILL-SMITH FOR ENGLISH
This teacher is not good. He's too full of himself and his own oppinions to care about anyone elses. If you have a different oppinion, he'll change your thesis, so be careful. I've heard about fitting yourself into your teacher's "type" of writing, but this is just rediculous.
Where did they find him? He really knows his stuff. Ask him anything and he'll go in-depth with you. Loves using Google. Class discussions is his forte, you'll get alot out of them. He makes it clear from the start what's needed to get an A. Some people just make his class out to be harder than it is. If you can read, just follow the directions!
Im not very good at writting argument papers but he is very helpful. He is a little alusive with directions but he really is a good teacher. If you ask him for help on an essay or an assignment he will be willing to help. I think hes one of the best teachers that I've had and I would def. take another class with him.
He grades on your personality and how much he likes you as a person; not on what kind of student you are. Would NEVER recommend him to anyone unless you don't mind being told that everything you do is wrong.
he brought me to tears. i am a very hard worker, but he doesn't give clear directions, and doesn't explain how to improve your writing. unless you go in with perfect writing abilities, i dont recommend this class to help you. very boring and useless!
Mr. Birchman is a sub par teacher. He decides who he likes and doesn't like, and grades accordingly. He likes to give feedback saying things like " your facts are mixed up " among other vague criticisms yet never comes up with specific examples. He's in love with microsoft powerpoint, every "lesson" taught is a boring wasteful powerpoint packet.
mr. birchman is the worst and most unhelpfully critical teacher in the world. just because he's hard doesn't mean he's good. and he will not make you a better writer, he will make you never want to write a paper again. don't take this class unless you want to kill yourself. honestly, though.
lets start off by saying that attendance is a BIG part of your grade. if your not there exactly when class starts ur absent, unless u let him know after class, but ur still tardy. I'm telling u even a in late ur late and he doesn't care about ur excusses! take notes and read his books. plus, do all the response journals or else u lose points!
First off very boring. Second, I got an A in the class, but even now I couldn't tell you what he looks for in a paper. He is nice, but does not help you improve your papers at all. I would turn in a paper I thought was great and get a bad grade. Then I would turn in a paper I did in a hurry and get a great grade. I still don't get it.
He is absolutely horrible. He does not explain things well at all. I found the papers irrelevant to the course and people don't plan to get put in the hospital on your death bed anytime soon while taking this class because he doesn't care, even with a doc.'s note. I speak from expierence
I enjoyed this class but would have to admit that it was boring at times. How he grades papers is a mystery, even after the class is over. I hate to say he plays favorites, but I don't know how else he grades anything. There are no rubrics for papers, just comments and a percentage. I would take another class from him.
Attendance is very important. Not a hard class, but not a cake walk either. Read all the required material & do all the journals, and you should be good. Tests, I found, were relatively easy. Stand-offish in beginning of semester, but warms up about midway through. Always got out of class earlier than mandated.
He is challenging, but helpful. He literally will sit with you and give you ideas for a thesis. He wants papers with a specific&clear thesis. He will make you a better writer if you listen. I learned A LOT that will help me in the futrue. Gives extra credit for notes and attendance. My papers avg'd to an 86 but I got an A. Good teacher. Take him!

Very nice and helpful!
I hated the M01B Class. It was torture to go to his classes. The way he grades is unknown, I did all the work, took the tests, participated in class and I got a D???!!! So I Highly recommend choosing a different professor. He is awful!
Going to class is madatory!!! I have no idea how he grades essays, I dont think he does either. He plays favorites and wants to see your interested or he is rude. He will call you out in class. I wouldnt say he is a horrible teacher just not the most pleasant. His class time is wasted with useless exercises. Dont take him unless you love English!!!
Fun class...read work in a circle. Does expect you to critique others work which can be a little awkward. Overall good teacher. He does expect you to attend class and make an effort. Go to class, do the work, and get an easy A.
Birchman is an awesome teacher! Everyone who says they did poorly on the essays are probably saying that because Birchman didnt think they had a clear thesis. If you talk to him after class he'll basically TELL you in which direction you should go with your thesis. INCREDIBLY HELPFUL & an awesome professor. take his class!!
Mr. Birchman is so nice, anyone who doesnt agree is crazy. He is funny and really helpful. Just go to class and make conversation with him because even if you are a complete idiot he will basically tell you exactly what to put in your paper if he likes you. No deadlines, which is better than most teachers, only 4 essays all semester just do them al
Mr. Birchman is a wonderful teacher! Attendance to his class is a must because attendance is taken everyday. If you dont like writing essays however, THIS CLASS IS NOT FOR YOU! You do four essays in the class. The first two aren't complicated. There is no deadlines for your papers, but I suggest turning one in every week to keep up!
A good teacher, but class got a little tedious and boring towards the end. Also, how schedule was set up, I spent 4 or 5 weeks w/o writing a paper. Pretty weird for a Creative Writing class. A decent class if you LOVE writing.

Class consists of all essays. Must do outside of the class time to get points. Never any due dates--making it hard to stay on track. I redid one essay for a month! I had to withdrawl the class. Must attend class! Lose points for tardy. I don't recommend for EngM01A.
Birchman is not HORRIBLE, he is just not super exciting to listen to. It is a typical english class, nothing special. He is very monotone and has his own opinions that kind of seem to be fact in this class. Pretty easy if you read and go to class.
he sucks... I recommend finding another teacher
best english teacher i've ever had. only english class i've really ever aced as well. i'm not fond of english, but he's clear on the requirements and if you do your work he likes you. attendance is mandatory, but he's interesting though, and he assigns good stories and has interesting in class discussions. highly recommended
I don't like English but I enjoyed this class. I mostly acted like a goofball and made a lot of sarcastic comments but he seemed to like me for that. He can be boring at times so you may want to crack a joke or two to lighten up the room. The one novel you are required to read, Life of Pi, is actually pretty interesting, and I hate reading.
The teacher is nice but the lectures are so dull. Attendance is mandatory. 5 takehome essays and an inclass essay, all easy. You can get 20 extra credit points for taking notes. We usually got out a bit early. I think he would be a good teacher for a higher-level class, as he certainly seemed to be teaching to the lowest common denominator.
This professor is kind of a jerk to tell you the truth. He is very unclear in how he grades your papers and how to complete the assignment. Also, he seems to grade much harder on students he doesn't like.
MOST BORING TEACHER EVER! His lectures are straight from powerpoint, monotone voice, his grading makes no sense. Definitely plays favoritism. Checks attendance every class, and takes points off if your absent. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, teacher!
Very boring teacher and his grading makes no sense. I got an A on every paper in Eng.2B and this guy refuses to give me above an 80. Won't give input on papers before you turn them in, only peer review which is pointless. He tried to drop me 3/4 through the semester after I had surgery even though i NEVER turned in a late paper. Not reccomended.
I found him easy. He is anal about attendance and participation. You can get extra credit for taking notes. TURN in every assignment on time!
I do not understand his grading. He didn't seem to like me so he graded harder on me, but even though I got a C on everything I did, I ended up with an A at the end of the semester. Don't take him if you want to enjoy your English class though.
his lectures are BORING!!!!! He can make you fall asleep! essay always have to be turn in on time!...worst teacher I took for english
Prof Birchman is a very nice teacher. The class is pretty easy. We had to read once a week and do a response along with 2 papers, midterms and a final. He's a very relaxed teacher and he's not constanlty asking you to be on top of your game or asking for questions. Its a relaxed atmospere in his class..id recommend him
The class was structured and you have to be on top of essays, no last minute hand-ins! He's a great teacher, I loved his class. there were 4 essays and a research paper/power point. He offers extra credit for notes/ attendance. He's compassionate and loves students who are willing to learn. I definitely recommend him.
Took his honors class. He is a little strange and his voice is annoying. In class is a joke we do close to nothing. Papers are graded extremely hard and its hard to understand why you got the grade you did. He gives you very little to no help in formulating thesis's and structures for essays. Take someone better if you can.
In comparison to the teacher I had last semester (Wolf, Lori), he's pretty good. Every essay has a freewrite and a first draft due, but they are not really as tedious as it sounds. He does promote interesting class discussions This teacher wastes a lot of paper on handouts, but they are not necescary to keep around. I would take this teacher again.
I took his honors class, hes very boring and his lectures are pretty useless, hes kind of a hard grader, i got an A in his class but had to work extremely hard on his essays, you have to put in a lot of effort
great guy, will help you if you need it
this teacher is the worst! he doesnt help you at all and hes soo boring! dont bother hes a waist of your time!
I took the honors class and hes actually one of my favorite teachers so far you have to work hard but I learned alot from his class it was definitely worth the effort =] take him!
So boring! Not very helpful, kinda makes you feel stupid when you don't get something. Makes you do a lot of reading and homework for every single story you read. His midterm and final are impossible, but only 2 essays which aren't bad. Only take him if you're really good at english.
I wanted to like him, but it was a 2 hour class and it was really frustrating because it seemed like he was just trying to burn time by having us do completely irrelevant activities (making duct tape roses...)
The best English teacher I have ever taken. I definitely recommend him whether or not you're interested in English.
One of my best english profs. He really cares about the subject and is always willing to help. The class is not a easy A but if you study it is very attainable. Attendance is mandatory. Great teacher!!
Birch was the best teacher I have ever had. His class was challenging but he made it very clear as to his expectations. He creates a lot of opportunity for extra credit and he is very approachable. I got an A in his class by doing my work on time. Great professor!
Birchy is a phenomenal English Prof.! Has you turn in a draft before the actual paper, and no late papers! He covered all the steps of writing decent essays and research papers.Best of all, he is always ready to help. Such a sweet man--he NEVER turns anyone away.Lesser English profs should take his advice. He was a Peace Corp volunteer. A great guy!
awesome teacher! very helpful.
Got an A in the M01AH class, have always been decent at English. Attendance is mandatory, offers a decent amount of extra credit but it's because he grades pretty difficult. Peer review before every final draft is due. Didn't really learn much, just glad to be done and out of the class. I only recommend taking him if you absolutely have to
Takes attendance like a hs teacher ir missed days/being late take pts away. Rants about useless subjects that dont really fit into the lesson planned. Grades hard. No late work accepted. Weekly hw.
This teacher is a strict teacher but he is very good in teaching you how to write an essay. I did not find him boring at all. Be prepared to share your paper by reading it out loud to others in a group, and then if picked,in front of the whole class. I found this embarrassing.
Birchman?s way of teaching this course was to make packets and split you into groups to do meaningless work. I did learn how to write great papers but going to class twice a week was very useless. Could have easily been an online class.
Birchman is very strict, very organize, very concise. But he knows what he is doing & will teach you to write a good paper. He REQUIRES the book although you hardly use it, big waste of money.3 essays 1 Research. Group reviews suck but are helpful. If you really want to learn take him, although tough he is excellent professor for a English course.
Excellent teacher. I would recommend this class only to those who are willing to put in the work, especially since it's honors. He enunciates exactly what he expects. Can be lenient to those who put in the work and devotion. Very helpful, will do one-on-one help sessions after class and in office hours. Great experience thanks to him.
Took this class for the summer. Splits you into groups which was fun for me since I'm pretty talkative. 4 essays and 1 in class essay. He was very generous in grading my essays. Would take again
He is a trouble maker at heart, You'll catch a glimpse of it when he talks about anything racey. He gives good grades to people who makes for good class discussion and his papers were easy enough as long as you do drafts and have facts that he doesn't know yet. Very helpful. Colors his hair! I hope to have him again!!
i took his honors course and it was really hard. he is a tough grader. he always decided to tell us information about the assignments the day it was due and rejected all of my ideas. he just makes a bunch of useless packets and doesnt really teach you how to write at all. only take if its your only option.
Grades tough but once you know what he wants from you on your papers he is easy. Got a C on my first 2 papers and A's on the rest Gives extra credit if you take notes. If you give him an idea he generally rejects it and comes up with a new idea for you. Must go to class will drop you after 7 absences, also 3 tardies count as 1 absence.
I did not like him. He didn't like to help you if you had questions, he expected you to know what he wanted when writing essays. 4 essays that were 750-1000 words and the last was a research paper 1000-1500 words. The subjects that we had to talk about in the papers were weird. I would recommend NOT takiing him unless you absolutely have to.
If you're looking to learn, take Birchman. If you're looking for a professor to be nice to you, don't take Birchman. He's OCD about everything in your paper, he takes attendance, and expects A students to be excellent writers. Gives honest critiques, esp. when you don't want to hear them. Helped me become a better writer, but wasn't nice about it.
Prof Birchman is the most boring teacher I have ever had. His midterm and final are ridiculous and the reading he requires are some of the most weird and disturbing stories I have ever read. Tons of HW and is definitely no help when it comes to asking him questions. The only pro i'll give him is that he is passionate about his subject
Professor Birchman is a good professor. But do not take this class if you plan on missing most class meetings, because he takes off points. There are 3 papers, 1 presentation, a research paper, an in-class essay and a class book that you will have a quiz and in-class essay on. He's helpful and allows you to turn papers in anytime on the day its due
Must attend every class. Each class he will clarify what he wants in your paper, so expect to change it. Write the draft as if it were the final paper. He doesn't use turnitin. Some class work might feel like a waste, but fake it. It will help your grade. Although I never went other students received lots of 1on1 help from him. Good guy.
Great instructor, very professional in his approach to writing and instructing. He makes the class fun and interesting and he clearly states his expectations in the beginning. Really, the only requirement is attendance. I definitely recommend this instructor if you're looking to become a more well rounded writer.
Is a great teacher, but very honest. I feel like most of the people who don't like him were not good writers. Most papers that I had to peer review came from nice people with an inflated idea that there idea was automatically interesting. It's like being told your a crappy singer when your whole life you've been coddled by your friends and family.
Amazing professor! I despised English and was a horrible writer until I took his class. He is a tough grader and tells you exactly what he expects of you in the beginning, but you will learn A LOT and his lectures are really interesting. I got an A but definitely had to work for it. The learning experience was totally worth it though :)
Very good teacher
GREAT TEACHER!!! He is very clear and concise about what he expects from you. If you like an honest to goodness teacher, he is definetly your man.
Clearly creative writing is his passion. He is a published children's book author, so his opinion is actually backed up by something. Sometimes he is a little behind the times in his criticisms (doesn't like women acting like men, for instance.) Either way, attendance is the biggest thing, if you show up to class and at least try, he grades fairly.
Horrible teacher! He makes this class so hard and marks you down a ridiculous amount of points. He doesn't even tell you what's wrong with your essays. You MUST attend class daily because he ALWAYS takes attendance. Definitely take this class with someone else.
I had to rewrite each one of my papers 3 times. As a class, he would point out what we are struggling with but never took class time to explain, instead he would dedicate time to having the class watch a film on nuns making cheese. I would not recommend him.
Great Teacher!!! Yes hes a hard grader, but he peer reviews before each paper is due and will tell you exactly what you need to do to get an A. His attendance is mandatory but class isnt too boring because theirs usually group work. Overall very good teacher and would definetly recommend him.
Birchman is a fair professor. In terms of an introductory english class, nothing is unexpected. Pretty basic stuff and write different kinds of essays like informative, persuasive, self relective. We only had to read one novel which we had some in class quizzes and ultimately a 30 point essay. Put the work in and an A is definitely possible.
Very boring.... Try to take someone else. I got an A but studied very hard... Let's just say my class flipped over their final and I heard someone say "he hates us". Very strict on punctuality and attendance as well. Waits at the front of class until the clock clicks to exactly when class starts and begins taking attendance... Blah
Great at teaching basic english skills. Honestly helped me recap what I learned in high school. He's not really strict, make sure you do your assignments and you should excel in his class. I agree he can be a bit boring, he does the best he can to make the subject more interesting. I mean do you really expect English to be exciting?
Very good at analyzing story and discussing different points of view for motivation. Not a hand holder, you have to get yourself working in this class, but natural creative writers should LOVE it.
INCREDIBLY boring professor. I don't feel that I learned anything in this class. I normally love english classes, but this one didn't interest me at all.
Funny guy, but hard grader. I thought the class was pretty interesting, and the essays he has you write are definitely different from any I've ever had to write. They require a lot of thinking, but overall are not too bad. No group projects but he loves group discussions. If you can handle writing a lot,I would definitely recommend this teacher.
If you put in effort, even minimum effort, you will pass. Attendance is mandatory. What is due is always clear. The first class of the week a short reading response is due, during class you do group work the whole class. Which isn't boring or difficult. The other day of the week is different things. It's never too hard. Two papers.
If you actually pay attention you'll definitely take something away from the class. The 5 essays require you to think, but get your creative side working as well. If you're willing to work and put effort in, this class will definitely change the way you look at writing essays. However, if you're looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you.
Took his class during the summer intersession and there was a total of 5 essays. He's very argumentative and gives students a hard time when they express their opinions which is frustrating. He is a tough grader but the class itself isn't half bad. He does take attendance so GO TO CLASS . Group work and going up to speak will happen. Good luck!
Really great teacher, if you want to learn how to write take Birchman. He does ask some pretty stange questions sometimes, but they make for great thought.
Professor Birchman is an interesting, and very nice, fellow. He is pretty hard grader and tends to crack down on you if you express your own opinion. The summer session consisted of five essays, along with three quizzes and some extra credit. Surprisingly, the essays are around half of the overall grade.
Professor Birchman has a very old-fashioned style of teaching and grading papers. He really wants you to be factual with your papers, and does not like opinionated papers. At the end of the semester I reached out to him, asking "how could I have gotten a better grade or write better papers?" to which I received no reply.
He's a really nice guy and mildly entertaining but he often lectures on things you already should have learned in high school. Lot's of essays but they were interesting and easy to write. I found he was a pretty easy grader but other's disagreed. We only had one test the whole semester and he gave those who got less than a B a chance to retake it.
Don't even get me started on this guy. He like arguing and somehow it comes off as him finding enjoyment to kind of embarrass you a little bit which isn't cool. He is in fact a VERY tough grader so do take advantage of the writing center at MC. I don't recommend this prof even though he's willing to help to a certain extent. Theres groupwork too
I ended up with an A out of some miracle, but he loves giving out Bs on papers. I love English, but he just didn't make it that enjoyable for me. Some of his lectures were relatable, though.
Loved his teaching style! absolute sweetest, very thought provoking. warning: you shouldn't take him if you're a bad writer, expect English to be a "joke" class, or are not into philosophy. I feel like my writing has improved because of him. if you are strong writer who was taught a lot of the basics in high school, you should be fine.
Terrible teaching ways. Does not help students in the slightest. Very ridiculous grader ways. Lectures are very irrevelvant. No help with essays when you ask as well. Would not recommend, would not take again. Do not pick him!!!
Much more heavy on semantics than syntax. I was a competent writer insofar as making a coherent sentence goes, but he definitely helped the Behind The Scenes. A little old-fashioned, but this can be forgiven.
Exceptionally hard grader. Attendance is mandatory&if you do not show up right as the class starts you will be marked tardy. His tests were vaguely related to the material covered in class and are extremely HARD. Almost every bookarticle he assigns is online so don't waste your time buying anything. I feel like I gained nothing from this class.
He is a super tough grader and very picky. If you don't like his style of writing you will have to learn how to.
Not a bad class, just wouldn't suggest. If he does't like your style of writing well than goodluck, tough sometimes senseless grader. Attendance is mandatory yet I constantly found myself wondering why the I had to be there to hear him lecture over cheese or for us to read articles on cows. Not a terrible class and you can pass with hard work
Professor Birchman is a sweet guy however, this class was not my favorite. Honors is not much different to the regular class except a little bit more critical thinking in essays. There's group work which is grueling, and lectures can be dry. But, the class is doable.
Birchman is pretty chill and funny. Sometimes his assignments other than the writing papers seem like BS but if you do them, they help your grade A LOT. He's an amazing professor, but really makes you WORK for your grade. Bottom line, if you're not good at writing essays, GOOD LUCK, but if you are and you're looking for a challenge, DO IT!:)
This class was pretty straightforward. You read three novels, a couple of group projects, and write several papers as well. If you're a well established writer then you will be fine, but if you're not then I would suggest using the writing center prior to turning in your work. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY! Lectures can be dry but overall good class!
Professor Birchman is not always specific about what he exactly wants and his tough grading style will reflect that when he gives you back your essays. The essays I wrote felt pointless and like they had nothing to do with what was happening in the class. He often forgets what classes he has told info. to. ex- due dates, bringing your book to class
He is not a tough grader as long as you show up to class and are willing to participate in discussion and put in minimal effort. He is repetitive but is good at helping students who need help with getting the basics of college level writing down.
Professor Birchman was nice but wasn't a very good teacher. He gives very specific requirements when picking your essay topics and at least 10 of the days in class felt somewhat random and unrelated to our work or anything that we would be tested on. He is a tough grader but gives time for essay peer review in class which was helpful.
This class is just OK. He can be vague with the directions for assignments and projects, and there's a lot of reading you have to do if you want to get an A. He changes due dates often so the syllabus is pointless. He's a pretty tough grader when it comes to essays, but overall he isn't a bad guy... just a boring professor.
The worst English teacher that I have ever had. He grades based off of his own opinions and ideas, completely disregarding the student's opinion. He is extremely vague and will sometimes give rules that he then changes. He did this to our class twice and it affected the overall score of my essays. DO NOT TAKE!
Good.
Not a fan. Possible to get a good grade though
Definitely have to work hard for your grade.
Very nice professor. Grading can seem harsh sometimes, but he is always able to explain what to work on. Not very many assignments. Grammer test, 5 essays, and a research paper. Definitely recommend using his office hours if you see yourself not getting the grades you want.
By no means a bad teacher. He knows what he is talking about, but lectures can be quite bland. I had a class that wasn't interesting because of the people in it. The assignment topics are strange, except for the research paper. Honors requirements was simply a presentation.
NEVER TAKEN A PROFESSOR SO HEARTLESS. Does not care about his students at all. Everything we read in class is related to death. DO NOT TAKE. BEWARE.
Awful. This is the dumbest class I have ever taken. First part of class wasn't too hard but the second part is very pointless. Seriously do not take this class! Got good grades on everything but the midterm and final.
Very though grader, his test require have a lot of material and some questions were ones most people wouldn't remember . I know people in the class would just leave pages blank on the test. Doesn't seem to care about students and is very monotone and bland. Wouldn't recommend.
His grading is semi opinion based and he is a tough grader. He seems nice but his lectures are very bland and hard to pay attention to. The work load isn't too bad, 5 essays, 10 quizzes, one final, and 6 journals. His quizzes are just on grammar though he doesn't seem to teach whats on the quizzes. This class is a lot of outside work but isn't hard
He's a fantastic teacher and is easy to talk to. Yes, there is a lot of essay's and work but its not that hard if you keep up with it. He's much easier to work with if you pay attention and participate. PHONES are an absolute no for him he will call you out.
This professor was good in the beginning, you have 5 essays the whole semester, you dont do one you WILL fail. After we had to assess the professor for the college he gave up and started to not care. overall he was a tough grader on papers, attendance was taken every day. I 100% would not take any of his classes again
I liked him. I would definitely take his class again. We did a ton of group projects, and it felt like a family by the end.
He wasn't the kindest professor, but despite not enjoying the class I still managed to get an A. He wants you to show up every class, but it feels like you're not learning much.
Birchman picked favorites in my class, I corrected him on one thing in return he hated me for the rest of the semester. He would always call on me when he knew I didn't know the right answer (I participated a lot in discussions and answered every question I knew so it wasn't a lack of participation). I don't recommend you take his class.
If you need it for honors credit and have no option, then take this class otherwise I don't recommend it. Prof Birchman thinks he is the best English teacher out there and grades papers based on favorites. He is an old school teacher and his style of writing is different, millennials should adapt to his style of writing else the grade is impacted.
He enjoys challenging you and getting you to think critically. Learned way more in one semester than 4 years of English in high school. I liked him so much I took him again for M01B. He doesn't pick favorites but I feel like he does like you more if you participate in class for discussion. I recommend him
Yes, this professor is very old school, but that is not the worst of it. He cares more about getting his personal opinion across than anything else. My favorite thing about an English class is the discussion, which there was plenty of, until COVID-19 happened. Throughout the entire class, there was NOT much opportunity for any independent thought.
Honestly I was scared to take this class when I signed up for it, I have never been more wrong in my life. A great teacher who really cares. All you need to do is turn everything in on time, come to class, participate, and take his critiques. I emailed him about my final paper a 3am, he responded at 3:15 with clear instructions and advice, luv him.
I took professor Birchman's spring 2020 Honors English and I enjoyed both the professor and the class. I decided to take his M01B class in the summer, and though it was accelerated, he still made the class very enjoyable with lots of extra credit so it was passable. Be prepared to ask questions! He doesnt always communucate exactly what he wants!
Writing makes me anxious, but Birchman's class was a breeze. I took his STEM-based writing course and the workload was very manageable because the assignments were interesting. Courseload includes Sapiens reading and discussion ?'s, essays with flexible topics, and minimal extra credit. Thorough lectures, very open-minded, and enjoys participation.
Good professor, nice guy and very approachable. Only 2 papers, one for the midterm and one for the final. 1000 words each, with multiple prompts to chose from. Mean on the final paper was a 92.8. Took the honors class and didnt find it any harder. Theres a weekly discussion post and a quiz every 2 weeks, do the work and you'll most likely get an A
Not a very hard class, work load was not an issue at all. As long as you stay on top of deadlines I think you should be just fine. The only thing I didn't love about this class was the way the professor sometimes spoke to you. He can easily be a little insensitive but overall, not a bad class.
cares too much about poetry and has too high of expectations for his students. Many pop quizzes that not only were irrelevant to the course, but actually harmed a lot of peoples grades in my class. He made us watch hours of documentaries about Emily D. only to get tested on who directed the films. Stay away
STAY AWAY.
He had us read a book (Educated) for the entire term and would assign random days for us to summarize our thoughts. These were doable but if you miss the deadlines or incomplete the assignments it will affect your grade in the long run. About 4 essays. If you complete all of the assignments and mini-quizzes you will pass with an A or at least a B.
Honestly hes pretty easy you get like 4 essays and hes not that tough of a grader but he isnt really clear with instructions with citations also he has a habit of sometimes embarrassing students in front of the class but if you do all your work on time, get decent grades, and come to class on time you should get a A or B easily
The class itself was straight forward and easy, with a few essays making up a chunk of the grade. But, attendance was mandatory and was 10% of the grade. No excusable absences especially during a pandemic. Missed class a couple times because I was sick and my grade sank. Also would make you read essays out loud and would always negatively critic it
If you are already good at writing essays, this class is a BREEZE. Don't take this class if you aren't good at essays and want to learn how to write one, as he isn't very helpful in that department. Reasonable workload and you can get an A if you get your work done. Easy grader. Didn't really enjoy him as a professor, but I got a high A so whatever
Professor Birchman is nice and cares for you to learn about literature! If you attend class, then you should excel on the quizzes because they are based on the material in lecture. This is the second level English course which requires you to know know to write literary analysis-type essays! There are pop quizzes(usually for extra credit)
One of the hardest English classes I've taken so far. The workload isn't too much, but the quizzes were tough. Overall, not the worst professor, but I wouldn't take a class with him again.
I had Mr. Birchman for English M01A and decided to also take his English M01B class the next semester. It's mostly just papers and 10 question quizzes based on the readings he gives you. You have a full week to complete them and you can retake the quizzes most of the time. Both classes were pretty easy.
Professor Birchman is a very nice teacher, just presents some odd discussions in class. A lot of the literature we covered was very morose and dark, so be ready for that (he does not warn you of topics). We really only had a few major assignments, and he offers EC and the quizzes were mostly online.
Odd person and will try to embarrass you in front of the class. He told a student to stand up and called him average. Took off points for something that wasn't included in the instructions. You're not here to learn, instead you are here to be tested as a writer and reader. If that's the type of professor you're seeking, then enroll in his course.
Honestly the best teacher ever, truly loves to teach english and cares for students. You have to do weekly discussion boards, light reading, a few essays but clear instruction. You have to kind of try in this class but as long as you listen to him in class you should be fine. I always look forward to this class, TAKE HIM!
His class is very straightforward and he keeps a consistent routine. One discussion board post a week, two major papers, and a research paper final, which he gives you lots of time to complete. His discussion questions can be odd, and he won't trigger warn for dark topics, but his lectures are interesting. Time consuming but not difficult.
Good professor, I would take him again for a different subject if I could. He knows a lot about English and history and is really understanding about late assignments and will still give you some credit if its late.
Professor Birchman's class can be challenging, but engaging if you put in the effort. The lectures are informative, and attending is key to acing the quizzes. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for essay prep.
Birchman assigned almost exclusively readings with SA on young girls, and gave ZERO warning in his syllabus. He had the men and women line up, and read each other love poems. His papers had unclear grading criteria, and there was not a single girl I talked to who wasn't uncomfortable. I'm regretful that I wasn't able to drop this class.
At first, I was very skeptical about the work, but after watching Prof. Birchman's lectures, I realized they were straightforward. Lectures matter in this class and will be your best friend; most lectures are pre-recorded and not long at all. Take pride in your work and ask questions; this will be your best guidance throughout this course!
this is seriously the only review you'll need, i took english MO1B TWICE and failed both times. i took a chance with birchman and i am soo glad i did! i have a B since i got 70/100 on my essay and i feel like he did grade tough for that BUT overall its such an easy class and great choice if u struggle with english. 100% recommend his online class!!
Prof. Birchman wasn't my first choice for English M01B, but I'm glad I took him. His lectures are short and straight to the point, very much necessary for success when doing quizzes. Discussions and papers aren't horrible as long as you follow the criteria. He doesn't include warnings on the readings, but I'd be wary that there are SA readings.
I don't think Professor Birchman deserves any bad reviews. It's clear that he really cares about his students and wants them to learn. His essay grading could be a little tough but it's nothing that would bring your grade down a ton. When he grades he provides a good reason for marks. I would take his class again. Show up to class & apply yourself!
Atndnce @ the exact time class starts is recorded & graded. Likes to give pop quizzes on books we are currently reading. Lenient on essay grading (3 maj papers). Rare EC opportunities. If u care there are no TW on some sensitive topics. Calls on ppl. Weekly online discussions and quizzes. Follow the rubric as if it were gospel and you'll get an A.
Birchman wasn't my first choice, but he was not bad at all. There's a discussion post assignment every week and a quiz every other week, with 3 papers. I felt he gave good feedback on the discussion posts. He gives a lot of lectures and readings (gives no TW), but it wasn't horrible. It seems like his in-person classes are much worse
Mr. Birchman is a kind man; his class consists of a few main essays and, aside from that, minimal assignments. He gives a good amount of time for each essay, and as long as you pay attention and follow the rubric given, you will score well. He is also always willing to help.
A caring gentleman, please interact in class to help as it is a little 'Death by Powerpoint' otherwise. His grading is very subjective with no feedback unless you see him personally (a few times I had to point out that my requirements were in there). I like that it was a few essays, discussion posts and the odd (way too short timed) quizzes.
