He's a great man, and an awesome professor. Anyone who takes photojournalism with Dave will developed great photography skills, and an even greater love for journalism. He's a lot of fun too, but don't think he's not a hard grader, because he is extremely tough! Get some thick skin and take him!
Fun class! Should be worth 3 units, broken up onto two days, instead of just 2 units...all on one day. He really cares about his students! He's funny too!!!
I love this guy. He's funny, understanding, and knows how to get his material across in a way that everyone will remember and can understand. And he reminds me of Keifer Sutherland which always helps. Assigns projects that allow us to be supercreative and have fun.
he is so hilarious. makes fun of how i want to be called a different name at the beginning of every class and i find it very funny. he made me interested in art....a VERY hard thing to achieve. yay for him. oh and i love when he says words like "thats bull****" or "this is a long ass powerpoint" HA
He is one of the best instructors that I ever had. I learned a lot from him. Mr. Blumenkrantz is unique. He has his own style for teaching that makes his class exciting. He became a friend with all of his students. I enjoyed being in his class and I owe him my life because he taught me a lot. Mr. D
Great teacher! Worth taking his class if you have in interset in photojournalism, he is very helpful and seems to genuily care about his students. Also he is a really good photographer
Funny and cool guy to have as a friend and hang out with, but a horrible teacher. He is biased and chooses favorites in his class. He will always call on the same people during discussions, and not those he disagrees with. And for his final, he forces you to watch "Farenheit 911" to further his personal beliefs. But remember, he's a Great guy.
At first I was not diggin his jokes I thought he was such a clown but I got used to it he does have favorites without a doubt but I don't think he ever denied someone's opinion just cuz he didn't agree he could be a little tough on the grading but I think you have to very creative and out lots of efforts into the projects you'll be fine
Hes awsome man. He's interesting and funny. i managed to learn a lot in his class. the only thing that bothered me was that every point earned in his class was an actual percentage point in your final grade. so if you got a 5 out of 10 on a quiz, the best grade you could get would be a 95 percent...i got an A- instead of an A b/c of that :(
His class was kinda boring but he is a great teacher. He is a easy teacher but the material itself is boring. Take this teacher. The material is lame but the professor is awesome. Bonus points: He is into Bob Marley.
Nice guy..super funny..doesn't take this class nor himself to serious. He tries to make the class as interesting as possible but face it J250 BLOWS!!!
He's a great professor! Very fun class with some work to do but as long as you do it, you shouldn't have any problems. He will tell you exactly what to study for exams and doesn't try to trick his students. I never saw any favoritism based on some of the comments I read so I don't know where that came from. Take him he's a blast!!!!
He is an AWESOME teacher. Very interesting, funny guy and just a cool teacher. He usually lets you out early and always makes sure his lectures are interesting. Great teacher, definitely take him!
fantastic teacher. really likes photography. the class is fun and he makes it interesting.
He is a great teacher.... Great sense of humor and assigments are very easy and fun.
I LOVE HIM!! HE IS SO GOOD AT WHAT HE DOES AND IS JUST A GENUINELY NICE PERSON ALL AROUND!! KINDA DORKY, BUT IN A FUNNY, GOOD WAY.
Best teacher ever!
Rad teacher, you can tell he loves what he does. Take him and you'll laugh every class...
easy class, interesting, crazy teacher in a good way, flexible...really cares about his students
Without a doubt, a spectacular professor. The assignments and projects are engaging and graded quite fairly. His PowerPoint presentations are very impressive; the class-time just flies by.. Stay on top of the reading and assignments and you're set. Great sense of humor, too. I cannot recommend this class highly enough.
This is a very skilled teacher that loves what he does, the work that he assigns can be hard if you dont do your readings or go to class, but why would you miss his class if it is so interesting, its true he is very funny and it is easier to learn while you are having fun.
Blumenkrantz is funny, fun, smart, and pretty hot (I'm not going to lie). I loved 250. Do all the assignments and be interested in the class and you'll do well.
He is the BEST! the BEST! the BEST! And that's say it all! oh! And he is FUNNY! FUNNY! FUNNY!
What else can I say that hasn’t been said? Yes, he’s absolutely hilarious, hands out easy work, and is a fair grader. I didn’t buy the book and yet still passed with an A. If you have an opinion, he’ll let you express it anyway how. He makes me almost want to change my major into photojournalism just because I couldn’t get enough of him. Almost.
this teacher kicks ass! Super funny, nice, laidback and interesting lectures/assignments. My favorite at CSUN so far. If you get a chance to take a class with him, do it. You won't regret it!!
Okay, the key to this class is to show up to every single class. That alone guarantees you to pass. Pretty funny guy!
great guy--as well as a great teacher. Blum helps students out with everything. I could probably go into his office hours and talk to him about my dying dog because his advice is wonderful. cares about his students more than other professors. Also knows his stuff!
He's so funny, he's the best, loves what he does and is just a great teacher, love him!!!!!
He is the greatest, smartest professor I've had and these are very valuable to come across. He is a very nice person and very fun to be in his class. Great sense of humour!
he is the best teacher ever. he relates to his students and his class is a joy to attend. i advise anyone in journalism to take his class.
I'm still in his class, but Blumenkrantz is a genius. His photos capture the soul of the subject. He's unassuming and he wears converse to classes. He also has a really soothing voice and never takes anything in life seriously. If you want a good mentor in photojournalism, you've hit the jackpot with Dave. Also, he likes chai tea lattes!
Visual Communication is a class all Journalism students must take at CSUN. Fortunately, Dave is a great professor and the class is a cakewalk, well for some of us though. Some students will have trouble, but most do well. It's all about the students mindset. But he's a hell of a guy and you will learn many things here. I highly recommend Dave.
Blumenkrantz is cooler than the Fonz! very laid back, but really knows his stuff. Good with people. Will rip you in class if you say something that shows a lack of intelligence, but it's all in good fun. Great class. Values applied knowledge more than perfection. So, if your smart and he knows it, you should do fine even if your a bit lazy.
Blumenkrantz: Accomplished in his career. Laid back. Funny as hell. Thoughtful, but speaks in plain English. Keeps it real (not for people with thin skin or low self-esteem). Videos. PowerPoints. Mad information. Easy assignments. Take home final. Teaches you how to think critically more than anything else, which is what great teachers do.
He is funny and easy but beware he's kinda full of himself and he will call you out in class on stuff in front of the entire class. He really favors girls too. overall, the class was interesting and helps you grow and overcome insecurities.
great and totally fun class. try to get along with him orelse...you will regret it. i enjoyed him picking on students. wow hes hilarious. no tests, critical thinking questions due every week, take home final and fun make your own magazine cover project, oh and a presentation. overall great class, i got a B+.
very funny and great teacher. very easy. notes all on powerpoint and easy to study. fun class.
Easy. Out of 16 classes only went to 7 of them and come out with a A. Four multiple choice quizzes..easy! one paper..only one page, double spaced! and a take home final!
He's great...take home final...only 4-5 quizzes...one paper...and a magazine design assignment...easy!
Easy class. He is funny. Only a few quizzes. Take home final. Don't have to go to class (doesn't take roll). His website is a godsend if you don't go to class because he posts all of the lectures and videos and lets you know what is due and stuff.
This class is really easy and fun!!
Canceled class 5 or 6 times out of 17; if you don't mind paying a teacher's salary so he can never come and take all the personal days he wants, then he's your man!
Great class. Prof is awesome. Show up and listen and you will do fine. We had 6 or 7 written assignments, no tests or midterms. A lot of emphasis goes into your magazine cover assignment. Be specific and detailed as to how you designed it and why.
Great class and professor. I went to class but rarly paid attention and got a good grade. Understanding and helpful. Says you need the book, but you really don't. TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT AN EASY A!!!
Prof Blume is a cool cat. I loved this class. Although I do wish we had more time for our final project, the photo story. It was a little crammed at the end of the semester. The paper wasn't hard but it can be time consuming. I look forward to his other classes though. I can definitely tell a difference in my photography.
I actually took Blumenkrantz for both Jour250 and 350 and he's really just an awesome teacher, best one I've had at CSUN. Definitely knows what he's talking about and you can tell how passionate he is about photography. Really funny guy that's easy to talk to, puts all the lectures on a class website. Definitely recommend taking his class.
Focused more on the story than the picture. Did 3 Soundslide/iMovie/Final Cut projects. Document the life of student artist/musician, a social issue, and a pro photojournalist for a day. I learned a lot about other media. Loved working on the projects. But he went on Paternity leave half way thru the semester. Todd Bigelow finished it off.
This class was a waste of my time for a magazine journalism major there is no point to the class, the guy is chill tho and the magazine cover u have to put alot of effort into and and the test are no joke I got a D in the class because of that and the group project is pretty chill.
Great professor with a sense of humor, which made the 8am class time bearable. Passionate and knowledgeable on the subject. Would take him again!
Professor Blumenkrantz is an awesome teacher! he is so entertaining and very passionate about photography! He is quite laid back and relates to his students. He def. knows how to make the class interesting to us. You will enjoy his class!
Sarcastic, egotistical...yet entertaining and informative. If you can get over his teaching style, you'll probably like him. He knows his stuff and is a great photographer. Just don't try and talk with him after class because you'll feel like your on a timer and most likely will only get 1/8th of his attention.
David is a very cool and funny dude. The class is pretty interesting and always entertaining. You will view some disturbing images though so be prepared. He can be a bit of a hard grader and deducts points for being late or not showing up. Hint: you don't really need the textbook, just take god notes.
Best prof I've ever had. This class is impossible to fail unless you don't do the work. Honestly as of right now I have a perfect grade and I just have the final left. He is strict with attendance but come on its college and yes the class is at 8am on a Friday but if you show up, do your quizzes, and papers/projects you should pass with an A
Weekly quizzes are annoying but if you read the chapter the quizzes help boost your grade. Two assignments and the final, all of which he is very technical on. He has a really good personality and great teaching style. My word of advice; take notes even though he says it is unneeded. they help come quiz and final time!
This professor is a bit odd. He likes to joke around a lot which can be a pro and con for an 8am class. For his final, he "fulfilled his fantasy" of making every answer be "B." His class for the most part is interesting, but he could tone it down with the "jokes."
He is the man!! He is not like most professors!! he actually has a personality. He uses a E-book so no text is required but u must read the E-book to pass weekly online quizzes. Super nice, fun, easy, and cool! take him!!
This class was a repeat of 250, he even showed a video in this class that I saw in 250! We spent all 2 hours in class instead of 1 hour taking photos like I thought we would do. You could look around the room and see people sleeping, playing on their phones, etc. He has a sarcastic attitude.
Amazing teacher. Very funny and sarcastic. He uses his own ebook which saves YOU money!!! TAKE HIM!! You won't regret it
His textbook is fantastic. Quizzes are online and come straight from the book. Lectures review the chapters. Attendance is not mandatory but he does exercises to show attendance. His e-mails can be a bit condescending so don't take it personally if he comes off rude. Easy A.
Professor Blumenkrantz definitely ranks up there in terms best professors. His sense of humor made an 8 a.m. class great. Weekly online quizzes, pinterest assignments, and a 2,000 word paper at the end of the semester, not to mention a final. Highly recommend.
Cool class if you have absolutely nothing else going on in your life. David expects you to see his class as a number one priority and to put all other classes and work on the back burner he literally said this. He gives huge assignments every week with barely any time to breathe in between.
Blumenkrantz is a great professor, he is very passionate about his field. The class isn't hard, just do the quizzes and weekly blogs and you'll be fine.
Blumenkrantz is definitely one of my favorite professors. Attendance isn't mandatory but he gives extra credit sometimes to those that show up. Weekly quizzes and blogs that are super easy. 2000 word analysis and a final that is online with the exact questions from the quizzes. Can be a bit rude but it's rare.
Easy class. Do the work and you'll pass with an A. 2000 word Visual Analysis may seem like a lot for some but it's pretty easy. Weekly quizzes aren't hard at all. Tumblr blog assignment was interesting.
He has a very sarcastic, easy going demeanor. Weekly quizzes online, a few lengthy assignments, midterm and a final. Weekly group assignment blog. Class is not mandatory, however he will take attendance if people stop showing up to class. Pretty easy as long as you do the assignments. Best part is he writes his own textbook and it's free!
sucks as a professor! will not take again and is very lost in the lectures! avoid avoid avoid !!!!!!!!!!
Took Blumenkrantz J250 & J350 as well. He has a passion for Photojournalism which you can appreciate. Has his moods, but is normally easy going. Don't lead on that you take any assignments as less than Top priority because he expects you to be all in it. Not difficult to pass so long as you try.
Great professor! This class is basically a semester long project, working with your fellow classmates. The professor acts as a guide and he encourages students to be creative and to get out of their comfort zone. You won't regret taking this class!
This class is cool. He's a funny guy and a teacher that really loves photojournalism so if that's you emphasis in journalism you should take him. He's pretty sarcastic but you only see him once a week so its fine. That class is basically based off a group project tumblr page and quizzes. Just read the ebook and you should get a good grade
One of the best professors I have had at Pierce College. Textbook is free (written by him) and very easy to understand. He really wants you to LEARN. Lot of passion. Really nice guy to talk to , as well.
love love love blumenkrantz. super easy going dude and class. the assignments are straightforward, and easy as long as you TRY. he wants to know how YOU think, so just put your opinions into your work and you will ace this class. book is free. quizzes and hw online. offers extra credit too! definitely a solid choice.
Great professor who really cares about teaching. He is also very considerate to his students and grades the assignments within hours! You do need to be on time for this class otherwise you will be marked down, but it is a very interesting class and he let's you choose your topic that you will be studying the whole semester.
Blumenkratz is a pretty cool professor. He is kind of funny. He is also very helpful. He isn't a tough grader, most of his assignments were pretty easy for investigative journalism. He is also super helpful and understanding.
This prof was awesome to have as an advisor for scene mag! We had chapter presentations, as well as working on your stories with classmates. Also had us choose what job when it came to making the magazine. Super nice, helpful, and understanding. Really enjoyed this class. Class of 2022.
I needed JOUR250 to graduate, and I'm glad I got Blumenkrantz for JOUR250. As long as you show up and do the work, you should be fine. Quizzes are easy as you can find the answers in the e-book. You also have to do two group projects and he'll split the class into groups of five-six people. He's very approachable through Canvas, glad I had him.
I appreciated his open mindedness and eagerness to have students actually express their ideas. The group projects sucked the soul out of the class, listening to students reiterate the textbook over zoom got dull quick. Class is heavily reliant on the textbook which he wrote, but for $23 you cant be that mad about it.
He's great and respected, and his work outside of class shows that, but his grading criteria and style are heavily up to him, his mood, and what he considers true or what is correct. His book is straightforward and there are more group projects in this class than I've taken in a class year, so that's there.
This class and this man single-handedly killed most of my passion for journalism. Chaotic. Rude. Unprofessional. Stuck in the past. An extraordinary amount of work with little to no guidance. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Blumenkrantz is very funny, he made me laugh out loud when we were on zoom several times. The class itself is fine, nothing crazy hard. We had weekly quizzes, one group presentation, and then some assignments plus a lot of extra credit opportunities. I think I ended with a 110% overall. He's also very nice and lenient :)
Oh wow, this class with Professor David Blumenkrantz was amazing. It was online, with Weekly Quizzes (easy if you have read the book carefully) and Extra-Credit Assignments, which were fun to do. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY, or else you won't pass. All and all Great Professor to take for JOUR 250
(JOUR 480) I was worried I wouldn't be able to handle this class, but he made it fun and interesting despite him not being familiar with the material himself. The weekly assignments were a lot, but he was very clear about what to include and how to get a good grade on them.
This class was a waste of my life. This dude is obsessed with AI, all he talk about is AI. He gets in fights with ChatGPT and plays terrible AI music every class. Everything in this class is AI which I feel is concerning for a news literacy course. It was incredibly easy but I wouldn't recommend it if you actually want to learn. Drove me crazy.
took him for 480, but had him for 250 as well. funny and awesome guy. he's also very understanding if you have any issues with an assignment. you'll learn a lot from him.
