He hates people who don't agree with him!
He grades fairly on your essays and he's an overall happy guy. On Fridays we would talk about the North Wind. He's a funny guy. I would recommend him for any course.
I found his class to be boring and useless. I did receive an A in the class, but I learned next to nothing. Everything I learned about writing, I learned while still in high school. His class did not help me to improve at all.
A gifted instructor, one of the best I've had at NMU. Fascinating lectures. If you prepare well for the exams with the study guide provided, you'll do fine. NMU's very fortunate to have an instructor of his calibre.
Professor Boe was one of the best professors I've ever had. He challenges students and I think that is a great thing. He is engaged in his work and that keeps us engaged. He's genuinely concerned with students doing well.
Very fun, a little weird, worth taking

woah, you are out there, man, but you are a pretty good teacher. You get into the subject, adn overall it was a good classh
Fairly easy class... he managed to make grammer fun... somehow....
I adored his class. Best class I've ever taken in my major!
As giddy as a school girl when it comes to talking about English! He gets really excited during his lectures, which is entertaining and makes the class interesting. Not a bad class, especially in the summer, because it is less grammar orinentated.
Great class. Ive talked to othe rpeople who had other professors that didnt enjoy/learn anything in their class. I feel i walked outta that class knowing so much more than i did going in He's very entertaining and VERY into the subject. sticks to syllabus
I have to take him again and I'm not looking forward to it. He's pretty arrogant. What he says is golden, so keep your trap shut. Don't call him Mr. Boe, it's Dr. to you.
Before the research paper of doom. You get the choice of either a lesson plan or a ten page research paper. I HATE PAPERS, but this is (overall) a very interesting class for an English major.
A tad eccentric, but overall great teacher. Sticks to syllabus. Not a very difficult class; learned quite a bit. Likes biking, skiing, Simpsons, South Park, & Seinfeld.
cool.

This was a really cool class, and I'll never look at English the same way. I didn't realize the history of our language was so interesting. Dr. Boe is a really funny guy, he can go off-topic sometimes but it's hilarious. He loves this subject, and you can tell by his enthusiasm in class.
He rocks!!!! He is like a big Irish god!
I liked his class very much. I still spout off weird facts I learned. If you can take the class in the summer, the format is better, and the presentation of words is fun. He can seem abrasive to some people, but those are the people that just like to hear themselves talk.
Interesting. I learned alot of useful skills in this class. Makes grammar interesting.
He is extremely interested in his subject - which makes for a great teacher.
He talks a little bit too much but he is a pretty easy teacher. He doesn't do portfolio's and has a very subjective grading scale which means get on his good side (not hard to do)
You can immediately see his enthusiasm for the material on the history of the English language, but he has no respect for his students. He gets frustrated if you ask questions or make comments in class or if you do more than what he asks. So mainly, do what he asks and ONLY what he asks!!!
very clear

This guy rocks. If you're not an idiot and you're mature enough to be in a 400 level class, but still manage to have a good sense of humor, you'll like him. I hope to take him again!
I love this man! He was very fun to have.
I've had two classes with this man. He is a total spaz, but he's great. He grades on how hard you try, and not on your actual scores. I'd take him again any time. He reminds me of "Kramer" from Seinfeld.

He's great. He points out all those things that bug you about the people in your class but would never actually say to their face. Seriously though, good prof. really knows the material and i'm looking forward to taking another class with him.
Dr. Boe is very "transparent" in that you know exactly what is expected of you. He lets you know in advance what the tests will be on. he expects attendence and note taking, but his rules really help you learn more in the class. Funny guy and great class but not a class you DON'T have to work in. Work hard though and your grade will reflect it.
Really cool dude, little crazy, but overall a good professor. I'd recommend him.
He's flat out rude to you if you aren't one of his favorites. Attendance is mandatory.
The guy is a bit sketchy, kind of like that Kramer off of Seinfeld. He's an alright professor, he cuts down the book constantly but agrees...confusing? Take him if you need or else don't take him.
a bit neurotic/rude at times. tests are essays.
I died a little inside every day listening to his lectures. He made no attempt whatsoever to make the class interesting, nor tried to reach students who do not learn by simply being "talked at." He is not a teacher. Also, he hates this site. He brought it up in class because someone gave him a bad review and it bruised his ego. Avoid at all costs.
Prof. Boe is an enthusiastic and organized teacher, and I got a lot out of this class (history of english). I would recommend him, but expect to do some work. People are quick to criticize when they do poorly in a class. Go talk to him in his office: he's an intelligent guy with lots of interesting ideas.
At first is comes off kindof as a very stange man- but as the class progresses you realize that he is a great teacher with tons of knowledge. He demands respect and as long as you give him that the class will go good for you. He is a very clear teacher and you never question assignments.
He is a great teacher. Classes are intense, but as long as you follow along and take good notes, youll be fine. Hes very clear in what he expects from you. I learned alot from this class.
never talked about the actual material, i could not stand being in his class.
Very repetitive and dull. He isn't clear as to what he expects. Very picky. He has more pet peeves than anyone i've ever met.
Great enthusiasm, fun class;however, Prof. Boe is extremely sensitive when it comes to comments. I honestly believe he was picked on as a kid and now if you say something, even about yourself, he will threaten you in front of the entire class to "watch it." Good teacher but he will treat you like a child if given the opporutnity. What a shame!
Excellent class, enthusiastic teacher. If you have good attendance and take good notes, you should do fine. I'm looking forward to his linguistics course next semester.
Professor Boe is a unique professor. He rants against texting and video games for twenty minutes usually once a week, makes constant references to South Park, and is extremely knowledgeable in the field of grammar. He is demanding and requires your attention, but honestly, he is a cool guy if you do your****. Don't take if you want to slack.
Interesting teacher, but don't take if you don't feel like working hard...
Do you remember watching movies that depict college before you attended college? There was always a cold, rude, ruthless professor that tormented his students to the brink of sanity...for pleasure? David Boe. He is straight up rude, mean, and requires you to abide by his O.C.D. quirks. He knows his stuff but doesn't share well. Avoid him.
Not helpful, disrespectful to students
Although it is impossible to deny the fact that Dr. Boe is knowledgable and undoubtedly a gifted instructor, one cannot get around the fact that the man is completely insane. If you rub him the wrong way in the slightest manner, no amount of apologeticism or professionalism can get you on his good side. Crack a joke, fail a class.
This guy knows what he's talking about, but seems to think the rest of his students do too. Most of us didnt', that's why we were taking the class. He's pretty full of himself, but knows a lot about grammar. In the beginning of the semester I disliked him, but he's grown on me. This is not a class to slack in. Attendance is mandatory.
Professor Boe is one of those guys who was probably picked on in high school. He is extremely nice.. if you're on his good side. He likes people who are attentive & don't mouth back, & if you give him leeway on his OCD mannerisms he's a pretty funny guy. Grades on quizzes are minimal, he mostly grades off your general demeanor.
Professor Boe is an excellent teacher, and he puts a lot of effort into his work. Some of my classmates, though, are very disrespectful and small-minded, and are probably the type who write unhelpful and insulting "ratings" here. Don't belive the complaints of a few immature students. In my opinion, Dr. Boe is one of the best teachers at NMU.
Professor Boe rocks. This site gives the wrong impression. I personally loved his class. I'm taking En404 with him next semester. "Crack a joke, fail a class." I'm pretty sure I know who wrote that, and it wasn't just "a joke." To him it was disrespectful and rude. He expects manners and to be treated with respect; he is a professor, you know.
He's a little strange, but he's actually a pretty funny and nice guy. He teaches you a lot, but only tests you on certain things and he tells you what he's going to test you on. No laptops, hats, or anything to distract him, but it's not hard to be on his good sight. Just be mature about it and you should get a good grade. Easy A/B
He goes off on tangents regularly, which takes class time, but are strange. He is also not the nicest professor. In class he is fine, but through e-mail he can be quite rude. If you want an easy grammar class, or english class in general, he's the teacher for you. But, I personally didn't find him very nice & his randomness can become annoying.
Dr. Boe is one of my favorite professors at NMU. He's hilarious, interesting, intelligent, and really has a passion for his subject matter.
AWFUL! Very UNPROFESSIONAL when addressing students, even goes as far to make comments about them when they're not present in the classroom. Will defiantly NOT be signing up for any of Mr. Boe's classes in the future.
WONDERFUL! Contrary to what some of my semi-literate classmates have written here, Dr. Boe is very knowledgeable and organized, and if you seek out assistance, he will give you his time and his respect. If possible, I would definitely like to take another one of his classes (possibly in linguistics, or history of English language).
Very good professor. Really seems to care about his job and English in general. Can be intimidating at first but eases throughout the class. It's English, it's going to be boring but a good professor always helps.
I'm a pretty good english student and had been in AP english all thru high school, and this class ruined english for me. I know it's technical writing but it was awful. If you can take this course with another teacher I would recommend doing so.
Easy to get along with if you follow his various rules. He lays out each assignment exactly how he wants it so if you deviate even a little he will notice. I got marked a bunch of times for having 1.25 spacing between lines rather than 1 until i realized you had to go into settings and change that manually. Almost everyone got C's for every assing.
High expectations, but I looking back it helped me prepare for my career. I appreciated him not letting slackers interrupt the class.
If you follow his list of rules and write down every little detail that goes into the format and guts of a paper they are not all that bad, but be sure to have a strong understanding of fine grammar.
Dr. Boe gives excellent feedback and will find every little mistake that is made within a paper. His criticisms will definitely help anyone turn into a better writer. The book for this class is useful. The assignments he assigned are not extremely hard and the only graded test we had was a 50 question midterm on grammar. I would recommend him.
His grading seems rational when he describes it in the first week, but he only awards one A and grades down from there on tests. Avoid at all costs, unless your gpa doesn't matter to you. He would be cool to hang out with though, if he liked people. But he doesn't. If you got lucky and could snag a beer with him it would be a great conversation.
Excellent and very organized teacher. I was enrolled in the history of english and I thought it was a great experience, and I learned a lot. Of course, there are always a few students who are disrespectful and critical, but Prof. Boe seems to do an admirable job dealing with them. Interesting lectures, fair grading, take a class from him!
At first, he was deceivingly hateful, but you warm up to him. He's very set in his ways, but his lectures are typically very interesting and the class was easy enough. I learned a lot, even when I didn't like him as a person for the first couple of weeks. Plus, he's funny.
I would recommend for anyone to take any class with David Boe just for the fact he does want you to pass. Unlike other professors he is very understanding if have an issue making it to class. He tried to help you the best he can. The other problem I would say about him is that he is a little OCD, and doesn't want you to wear hats or eat in class.
Funny guy but kind of a hard ass. Prides himself on not giving A's. Easy class but effort is required. Although regardless of effort, it is near impossible to get an A.
At first he comes off as very intimidating, that's his way of weeding out some students the first day of class. In reality he is a pretty amazing teacher. He is a professor that you can actually learn from. He does not believe in busy work like many TA's in EN111 and EN211 do. He's a pretty cool dude.
This professor is hands down my absolute favorite professor outside of the tech center from my two years at northern michigan. He is a complete hard ass no doubt, and really tries to prove it to the class the first week. No hats no food no question, this rule really pissed me off but its fine cause he is at teaching and making you a better student
David Boe is awesome! He is no doubt one of the most intense professors I have ever had but still I would definitely recommend him as an instructor. He is fair and just asks that you pay attention, put in an effort and respect his rules (no hats, no technology and no food!) If you cannot enjoy Boe as a professor, there's something wrong with you.
I dont understand the negative reviews- his policies arent harsh and theyre easy to follow. All you need to do is show up, pay attention, and take notes. There are only 3 exams- 10 short essay questions that he GIVES you a few days before. Thats it. Sometimes you should do a little reading (if you chose to accept it) so you understand better.
He is not very helpful if you miss class - do not miss class ever if you have the option. He gives easy B's but as a student who has a 3.92 GPA and wants a 4.0 this class was a pain to attempt to get an A even as an English minor.
One of the most unprofessional teachers Ive ever had but expects students to keep an extremely high standard of professionalism. Regularly insults students behind their back and to their face. Im pretty sure he only gives out one A per semester, so probably dont take this class unless you want to work super hard for a B+.
Professor Boe was always prepared for class and didn't waste time. He doesn't give out busy work or do peer-group workshopping. He can seem intimidating, but really he is a nice guy if you simply follow the rules/assignment guidelines and don't mess around. There are also ways to get extra credit. If you're a naturally good student, you'll do well.
His class wasnt bad I did appreciate that when I took it we really only had like 5 assignments in total but personality wise I just did not like his vibe.
Attendance is extremely important to Boe. Additionally, exams are only grades truly given and he does not enjoy technology so don't expect to see your grades often. He is particular and a bit intimidating. If you show up, do your work, and study for exams, you will be fine. His people skills are... lacking, though.
Boe is very precise about how he wants the assignments completed which was nice, but he just is not very easy to like. I did not really like how he seems to talk down on everyone. He does not use educat, so you won't really know your grade. You will do fine in this class I you follow the guidelines and get help from the writing/English tutors.
Impossible to get an A. (I usually get As) If you do everything 100% correct, you get his default grade of a B. Easy class, only abt 5 assignments all year. He looks down on all his students and spends over half of every class just bragging & talking abt himself. & attendance is mandatory.
This class (british literature survey) was enjoyable and informative, and I liked the quiz and essay approach to evaluation. Professor Boe was always prepared, and he also provided useful historical context for the works we read during the semester. If possible, I hope to take another class with him in the future!
I've never really liked writing classes, but Dr. Boe's composition course was actually quite effective, and I feel that my writing did improve during the semester. The assignments were clear and specific, and he gives good feedback on the essays, etc. There was no unnecessary busy-work and he was flexible about attendance, which I appreciated.
I'm currently enrolled in Composition 1, and we are approaching the halfway point of the semester. It's a really helpful class so far and I feel my writing has been improving. I'm sure I will pass this class without any problems, and then I plan to take Composition 2 next year, maybe with Professor Boe again!
He was a great professor. He knows what he is talking about and how he wants his classroom run. If you like eating in class or wearing hats/hoods beware he doesn't allow it. Only one "textbook" is required but it is just a small writing guide. Doesn't do educat and wont know grade till final grades are posted. There is only like 5 or 6 assignments.
Professor Boe can come across as very intimidating, but if you put in effort in his class, you will succeed. I enjoyed having him because he didn't ever give us busy work and instead only had us do 6 assignments in all. The only downside is that he doesn't use Educat, so you don't get to know your grade until final grades are posted.
He seems a little harsh at first but as you get to know him more he's can be pretty likable. If you show up and put in effort, the class is easy. He doesn't assign busy work and just has a few assignments that are done in class. I really enjoyed his teaching style. No electronics.
Didn't use EduCat, made it difficult if you just wanted to know your grade. Everytime I left this class, I felt dumb because he would talk down on students and make fun of them. Wouldn't recommend having him fEN111 because he didn't have any interest in teaching the class mostly because he "only teaches EN211". Take any other professor!
He is very old school and refuses to use educat so you won't know your grade till the end of the year unless you are failing. His grading system is based on a checkmark system because he doesn't like the stigma around letter grades. An A in his class is a checkmark plus, a B is a checkmark, and a C is a checkmark minus.
Professor Boe is a good teacher, but he's not for everyone. I took his class in Winter 2024. He is a particular type of person, and his class has been set up the same for decades, but it works. His class is a challenge, and I wouldn't take him a second time, but I'm glad I took him at least once. If you're up for the challenge, I'd recommend him.
funny at times but he is SO STRICT.
Professor Boe, while very knowledgeable, continually inserts his personal beliefs into his lectures. Which is just one of many things that might make you want to take his class. Additionally, being at the age that he doesn't even have a grasp on what Ai can do or does, he continually accuses those who show improvement of Ai use!
Dr. Boe can be intimidating at first, he has a very old fashioned way of running his class. However, once you get past that, he is likable and pretty down to earth. He is set in his ways and his class was challenging. Simultaneously, he also clearly cares, and will give you constructive feedback on your writing.
All of his policies are really confusing. He frequently disrupts lectures to have random, unrelated conversations. He doesn't use letter grades or educat, so you don't know your grade until the end of the semester. He's a harsh grader and gives a lot of feedback, but he doesn't allow revision to improve your grade.
