If he doesn't like you for some reason or other he can flunk you guiltlessly. Also, as it was said, he's pretentious and thinks he's better than his students. I'm very very angry with him and we're lots than didn't like him as a human being, he's a shame to McGill.

As a supposedly wonderful teacher, it was an awful year for me. He was not helpful at all and he had his favourite students in the class which I found very unfair. The only good thing about him is that he knows his stuff but his teaching skills are very poor. It was the worst teacher ever!!!

Cervantes class was a nightmare to me (one year class), cause he did seem interested to help me at all and he was very cold person with me.Do not take his class, he's a very bad teacher, no tack with the students.

He wasn't that helpful as a thesis advisor, but generally a nice person. He's never very clear with his essay topics, which makes them difficult to write, but the actual classes are a lot better than what I had expected. I find myself laughing every once in a while. It's not too bad.

I expected to hate this course, but I ended up learning a lot and am glad that I took it. The classes have a tendency to drag on (especially at the beginning of the year) and there's a lot of work. If you take it with open mind and ask lots of questions though, you may be pleasantly surprised.

This is the best class I've taken at McGill. The prof was very helpful, easy going, knowledgeable and encouraging. He wrote the most detailed comments I've ever seen! The readings were fun and the discussion really helped to make them relevant.

Although the class kind of killed my interest in the spanish language, that can only be chalked up to not enjoying the literature. As a teacher, Prof. Boruchoff is extraordinarily knowledgeable, helpful, approachable and above all kind. If the course material interests you, he will be pefect.

I took this course only because there were no advanced language classes but the prof made me feel comfortable and totally changed my view of literature. He is an inspiring teacher who really cares about students and knows an amazing amount about the subject. I recommend him strongly. He's great.

This was the best course and the best professor I've had in four years at McGill. Professor Boruchoff is entertaining, challenging, informative, helpful, and brilliant. He knows an amazing amount not only about Cervantes but about all sorts of literature and history. If you can take only one course, this is it!

I was unsure of my abilities when the course started but became more confident because it lasted the whole year and the professor was so supportive. He is a great teacher, very patient, funny, interesting, up on the latest findings, etc. I wish there were more profs like him.

I strongly recommend this class and the professor. The lectures were informative and entertaining. The prof was clear, even funny, and knows an incredible amount about literature and history. His comments on my essays were very detailed. They really helped my expression and understanding of the readings. It's a lot of work but worth it.

The prof is very clear, fair, accessible, patient and a real expert in the area. He's one of few teachers I've had that truly respects students and treats us as adults. He's also demanding so if you are looking for an easy course this isn't it. But if you want to learn, this is a good course and a great teacher.

This is the best prof I've had. He made the material lively and really cares that students lunderstand, making time for questions and discussion. The readings in the textbook were sometimes difficult, but interesting (not what I expected) and the lectures put them in context.

Laughably formalist, not open to other interpr; brings up other DQ scholars only to mock them; VERY anti-cultstudies. Despite that, class is sometimes great. But since Im spending a whole semester on DQ I should be learning all there is, right? Not the case, I could learn as much reading it on my own. Still, nice man, relaxed, and class is EEEAAASY

The prof is a wonderful and caring person. He taught Don Quixote as Cervantes would have wanted; all the classes were entertaining and intellectually stimulating. If you have a chance to take the course you will really love it.

I am an English major and had never studied Spanish lit. This course completely changed my life! Cervantes is a great writer and Dr Boruchoff is the best prof I have ever had. He knows all about the novel (not just Don Quixote) and opened my eyes to so many new ways of reading and understanding literature. I recommend this course to everyone.

Professor Boruchoff is an outstanding teacher. He's very entertaining and informative, helpful, patient, and interested in student's views. I had my doubts about reading Don Quixote in English but really enjoyed it and learned a lot.

When I took this class I didn't realise how much I was learning. Now (a year later) I can see that it gave me a great basis for the other courses I'm taking. The prof. was really clear and cared about having us learn. He's a hard marker but an excellent teacher. I recommend him to anyone interested in Latin America, and not just literature.

Every day I go to class I'm amazed how much Professor Boruchoff knows about Spanish literature. His Spanish is like a native and he's very funny and clear and patient. He also is very helpful when you see him outside class. He's a VERY hard marker but I recommend him and the Cervantes to everyone.

This was my favourite class ever! The readings were very interesting and challenging and totally changed my views about traditional Spain. The professor was also amazing! He knows everything about Cervantes and is very clear, nice and funny. He he wrote the most detailed and helpful comments on my papers. I recommend this course to everyone!

Professor Boruchoff knows everything about the subject but asks students to express their thoughts rather than just telling you what he thinks. I found this hard at first but it really made me more confident about my Spanish and a much better student. He's a gret teacher and very nice also!

Boruchoff was by far the best professor that I had at McGill. He is an expert and also a caring person who always makes time for students. Cervantes is definitely the most interesting class in the Hispanic Studies department.

This course was interesting and fun but required a lot of work (reading and especially thinking). Besides being very patient and informative as a teacher, Professor Boruchoff was always available to help and took a lot of interest in our work and career plans. He even wrote letters to help me get into an MBA program.

Truly outstanding professor! He's super nice, incredibly knowledgeable, funny and cares about every student. He writes the most detailed comments I've ever had and it really helped my Spanish to improve. The survey course was much harder than the one I took last year. It was also so much better.

This is the best course I've ever taken. It was hard and confusing at first because we had to figure out everything from the readings without being told what to expect. Then it all made sense and now I really feel like I understand Cervantes. He is so incredible modern!

He's very demanding but fair and more importantly he knows an incredible amount about Cervantes. He expects frequent participation but classes are relaxed and even entertaining. And as others said, you end up learning a real lot. I strongly recommend this course. Professor Boruchoff is a great teacher and a really good person.

Professor Boruchoff is an awesome teacher - the best I've had at McGill. He takes the time to know each student and treats you like an adult. He's demanding but very supportive, and you come away with a real strong understanding, even if things are hard at the start of the year.

I wasn't interested in literature written hundreds of years ago until I took this course. It turned out to be really engaging and the professor brought the social and historical issues to life with a lot of insight and humor. He's a wonderful teacher and nice as well.

It was challenging for a 200-level introduction and also a bit confusing at first. The prof helped a lot by being very patient and accessible like the TA also. I ended up really liking the readings and it made me much more confident about speaking and writing in Spanish. You need to come to class prepared and participate since this counts a lot.

I strongly recommend this course if you want to understand literature or even just improve your Spanish since Professor Burochoff spends a lot of time explaining the fine points of grammar and commenting your essays. He's also a very sweet person.

I love this course even if it will probably destroy my GPA. Professor Boruchoff is very demanding but fair and always available to help, and never talks down to you if you have questions or make mistakes in Spanish. To get a good mark you definitely need to do the readings and participate.

This course completely changed the way that I think about literature. It made me see that many concerns that we have today were also concerns in the past. Professor Boruchoff is very knowlegable and patient, as well as amusing and demanding. He's everything that a good teacher should be. You should definitely take this course if you can!

As an Anthro major I'd never thought about ethnography as a discipline that already existed in the 16th century and even less as a concern of Catholic missionaries. So this course opened up a whole lot of new material. The prof is very knowledgeable and always ready to help with questions and research projects. This was a great course.

Small seminar with a lot of primary source readings and discussion. Dr Boruchoff is very knowledgeable and always available to help, and he has a great sense of humor. I strongly recommend this course. It's the kind of class that makes McGill a good school.

I don't know why everybody says he's a hard marker. We just got back our first essays and the grade was much higher than I expected. Also there were unbelievably detailed and helpful comments. The whole course is interesting and Professor Burochoff is really motivating, funny and brilliant.

This class was so amazing! I don't care if you think Renaissance Prose is the most boring thing in the world - Boruchoff makes it so interesting. He is so helpful, gives really detailed feedback on essays, and is a joy to listen to in class. Such a genuinely funny and nice professor, the best I've had at McGill. Absolutely recommend taking this!

I really loved this class. I felt that my reading and comprehension of Spanish works improved as the semester went on. The professor was very clear, approachable, and pleasant. Lectures were a tad dry but I loved the readings--really fascinating. If you like Spanish, you'll love the class. Commentary on essays was very helpful.

I'm not that interested by medieval and renaissance literature but really enjoyed this course because Professor Boruchoff is so knowledgeable and engaging. He created a relaxed atmosphere and was always willing to answer questions. He also took time to give a lot of feedback. I recommend this course strongly. It really helped my Spanish.

This was my favourite class I've ever taken at McGill. There is no one better to study El Quijote with than Professor Boruchoff - he is an expert! Every single class is hilarious, entertaining, and leaves you with a new perspective. He truly cares about everyone in his class and is so helpful. Favourite prof at McGill and the best novel ever!

He is the best professor I have had at McGill. He is passionate about the material he teaches. He is also very knowledgeable. He brings up question that I would have never thought about Don Quixote. He takes the time to meet with you and is very approachable.

I loved this course! Don Quixote is an amazing novel and Professor Boruchoff is an excellent professor. He's incredibly nice and helpful, and he knows everything about Cervantes and Spanish history. You should definitely take this course or anything else he's teaching.

This was a VERY tough course and it changed my life! My other professor taught me facts, Professor Boruchoff taught me a new way to think. This made a much better student and not just of Spanish literature. I am really glad that I took this course.

I've never had a prof who cares so much about his students and wants every one to succeed. Sure, he's a hard marker and demanding, but that's because he really wants to bring out your best and he gives a lot in return. He's also incredibly witty and has a talent for making difficult readings and issues understandable. Definitely take his classes!

He's extremely well-read, especially about Cervantes, and knows how to make difficult readings accessible and enjoyable. He also takes the time to meet with your and answer questions. I cried when Prof Boruchoff told the class he was leaving McGill. Besides being an amazing teacher, he's a truly wonderful person -- very kind, caring, helpful, etc. Every class was informative and a real joy. He knows all about Cervantes and has a dry sense of humour. I can't imagine McGill without him.

He was without doubt the best prof I had at McGill. He made it possible to both understand and enjoy difficult readings and to relate to the past. Every class was fun and I specially enjoyed his anecdotes about Cervantes and other critics.

Before taking this class I wasn't interested in medieval or renaissance literature and now I've decided that it's what I want to study.
