Write down what he says wrather than what he has up on the board (or both) because a lot of what he says shows up on the difficult exams.
He truly has a passion for teaching. He is young also, so he can relate to students. Has a crazy cool background wilderness newzealand research adventure.
By far my favorite professor!
I really enjoyed this professor. He doesn't mind answering any questions that you have and he tries to make what he talks about interesting. The downside is there's tons of note taking, but it's worth it. Probably my favorite professor this semester
Class and Exams are alot to get used to but once you do it gets easier. Dr. Bos is very challenging, the lectures are usually very boring, but the class is very informative and you will learn alot.
He teaches very well, but his class is boring. He tends to lecture very fast so typing your notes is very beneficial. A lot of studying outside of class is necessary. Not an impossible course, but difficult.
great
The class is impossible to ace. There are plenty of bonus points to help you. Make sure you do them to help you if you fail an exam. The lowest exam is also dropped! Lectures go fast. Pay attention. Also, listen to the lectures online to grasp other useful info that may not be on the slides. Diagrams are useful so remember to learn from them.
The class is NOT impossible to ace. (sorry for the typo)
Great professor. I hated biology until his class.
Dr. Bos is the best
Dr. Bos is an excellent prof and a fantastic speaker, but his tests are HARD. He likes to come at you with both guns blazing, to use his words. Make sure you know the lecture slides backwards, forwards, and upside down, as well as applications of the concepts.
His class is impossible. To get a good grade would require hours a day of studying. Good luck and beware. Awful class!
Good slideshows
not too bad of a class. Keep up with studying. you get the grade you deserve in this class!
Some of the info was difficult but he made it understandable and was there to help if you needed it.
^^"
A great professor! Even though they are optional, go to PSOs, they definitely helped me prepare for the exams.
If you want a B in this course, focus on the Focus Questions on Blackboard. If you want an A, read the book. Go see Bos if you have trouble with the material, and he will gladly help you.
Bossman rules. If you read the book.
Dr. Bos is a great professor. All you really need to do to ace his class is go to lecture and take detailed notes. I read the book first semester and realized it was a waste of time second semester because his tests are directly from lecture.
David is good guy indeed. His class both BIOL110/BIOL111 are kind of hard,if you are a premed you need to get over it. But he is a nice to students' questions and he explains them clearly.
He glazes over things but tests on things in-depth. Not bad just not very good.
Dr.Bos is a fantastic professor. He is willing to stop lecture and explain something if you don't understand it. Going to PSO will really help you with exams and practicals, as well as tests. Definitely my favorite class of the day.
Dr Bos is a great professor! Being a jr in chemistry I really have no interest in biology, especially an introduction to biology, but Dr Bos did a great job of teaching and making the material interesting. Dont get the book-Take good notes in class. All of the material on the exams comes directly from lecture notes!
Definitely one of the better proffesors at purdue. Always willing to explain something to you if you don't understand, even 3 or 4 times. Bio 110 is not a hard class IF YOU STUDY. The book isn't neccessary but it can be helpful.
Dr. Bos is extremely helpful and great at explaining concepts. His tests are a little difficult though.
I loved this class and Dr. Bos. It was challenging, definitely, but doable. I thought he was an excellent teacher and was always readily available and willing to help students who were having trouble. I thought he made the class interesting by breaking up the monotony with jokes and analogies. Overall I think he's a great professor!
Hmm he is a good prof, but i dont like his lectures it is hard to keep up. And his tests are quite diferent than what you would expect.. All in all. I wouldnt retake this class with him..:(
How to do well in this class: go to lecture, go to PSO, and write your own notes instead of using the powerpoint slides he puts on blackboard. Class is a breeze if you make an effort to know the material instead of just trying memorize everything.
Dr. Bos is the best lecturer that I've had at Purdue. An excellent and thorough teacher. The course can be tough, so be sure to utilize all of the resources: he posts powerpoint slides and full lecture recordings on Blackboard. Pro-tip: DO NOT buy the textbook! He tells you in class he only tests on lecture material. I got an A without the text.
This class is EXTREMELY hard to get an A in. It was the only class I actually took seriously that semester, and still barely got an 80%. If you're going to take it, make sure it's a requirement for your major and make sure that you're pepared to put your all into it and may not even get an A.
Awesome guy to be around. Very helpful and very approachable. Really loves teaching this stuff to all of us.
This class was hard but definately not impossible. It isn't a blow off class, but if you pay attention in lecture and go to labs and recitations, you can definately pull off a C even if you don't do well on the exams. Exams were difficult but Dr. Bos was very willing to answer any questions you have. Overall, I enjoyed the class =)
OMG Dr. Bos's bio110 lecture is def the best the lecture i've ever attended!!I have to say before i took his class i had absolutely no interest in biology and had never taken a bio class in my life. But i ended up with an A+ in his class ,this just explains how awesome his lectures are!!Exams are hard but def not impossible to get a good grade! gl!
Great Great teacher! The materials he put up on BB and the PSOs are extremely helpful! Do the ECs as well! I ended up with a 440/450. So definitely possible to get an A!
May seem hard if you've never had a college course but Bos is extremely helpful if you need it
Bos sincerely wants you to get an A. He gives you so many practice questions and Q&A sessions and anything else you would need. If you listen and go to class, this class will be a breeze.
The exams are impossible to do well on. I think all these people commenting that they got A's in the class are robots that Bos created in his secret lab.
phresh
I also took his class in 111. He gives so many resources to use to study for tests (Practice exams, site with the book, study guides, lecture recordings). If you fail his class you are not taking advantage of these. If Chem teachers would adapt his teaching style my life would be amazing. However, he does not curve at all.
This class is very challenging. If you are not that interested in science, you will find it difficult. He does know what he is talking about. As he said, just because it is a 100 level class it doesn't mean it will be easy at all. Prepare to study. The lab isn't much easier.
He does not know to write a test. He writes confusing questions where you don't even know what he is asking. the material is reasonable to know, the wording on the test is just difficult to decipher the actual question.
A lot of people seem to have trouble in this course, however it is not completely impossible to get an A. Not trying to brag, but I literally got a 99% in the class. All you have to do is read the readings, make good notes, and study. Also, at the end of the semester he offers lots of extra credit. If anything, you should be able to pull a B.
Good professor but his class is very challenging. I didn't study very much and ended up with a C. Definitely requires a lot of work to do well.
Willing to give help. Hard but fair.
Amazing professor! From the beginning he said that this class is not like anything we've taken before. He wants us to grasp the concepts and be able to apply them, not simply memorize them. Lectures are very well organized. He is an excellent speaker and makes the class very interesting. Very approachable and friendly.
Very helpful during office hours. The course load is very manageable if you are efficient with your time.
Dr. Bos is an amazing professor. His lectures are interesting and helpful. The class is a lot of work but it isn't really that hard. Reading the book is so important, I can't stress that enough. Practice exams are very similar to the real exams. Notecards are also a great way to do well on the exams.
Great professor, probably one of the best I've ever had. Speaks very clearly, and gives plenty of resources to succeed in his class. He even highlighted key points in the text book! Exams were very fair and the grading scale was very fair too.
Very good teacher, great explanations and examples and makes class very engaging. H really cares about students succeeding in his class. Tests are not easy, but are possible if you work hard. He also follows the rules very carefully and doesn't make exceptions, but he is very fair. The class was great, and he is overall, a wonderful teacher!
Easy. Do extra credit, have common sense, study for 2-3 hours before exam and you will get an A. I ended up with a 97% with minimal studying on quizzes, I only studied for exams.
Dr. Bos is an excellent professor! The class is somewhat difficult, but if you try and study, it can be much better. He's a great guy and really wants to see his students succeed. He uses many demonstrations in class that are very helpful. I definitely recommend taking this class with him!
Overall, the class itself isn't all that challenging. The quizzes in recitation are fairly easy especially since Dr. Browning goes over and clarifies everything. Labs are fairly simple. The Exams are extremely challenging unless you have taken Bio I, II, and AP Bio in high school.
Dr. Bos is a wonderful professor. He genuinely cares about his students. Although the class may be a little challenging, he explains everything very clearly and thoroughly. He takes time out to ANSWER questions - this is pretty rare in college. He is an awesome guy. Take his class! You won't regret it! - this is coming from someone who HATES bio.:)
Very challenging. I studied really hard and still did terrible on the tests. As long as you get at least the class average on the tests you will get a C or low B.
I took bio 110 my freshman year and i have not taken bio since my freshman year in high school. Given, this class is very difficult but take advantage of the active lesson bonus and go to all the free SI's! This class is difficult but it is do-able to do well in.
Impossible to do well in this class. This professor only thinks about himself. He does not care about his students. The exams are in a completely different language.
Dr. Bos is a tough (but fair) teacher. The first email that is sent out mentions the difficulty of the course and it is no joke. Definitely take advantage of the SI sessions and extra credit. Have a game plan going in about how you're going to take notes because it's easy to become disorganized and overwhelmed. His real life examples help a lot.
Very challenging. Exams are very difficult and hard to succeed without studying. Other than that he is a really nice professor.
Loved Dr. Bos. He knew what he was talking about and was clearly interested in the subject. Biology has never been my favorite subject, but he definitely improved my opinion.
For most of you, this will be one of your first classes at Purdue. Use this class to learn how to study because this will not be like high school bio. the information is dense and pretty tough but Dr. Bos is a great professor, and if you study and ask questions, you will do well in the class. take notes, understand them, then memorize them.
He was an alright professor- tried way too hard to be funny but at least he tried to be interesting. Hard tests to study for- even knowing key concepts didn't help much
This class is the perfect example for those 'homework is 2x2, test is calculate the mass of the sun given purple crayon' sayings. I took AP Bio last year and did great, when I go to review lectures I can answer most of the asked questions thoroughly myself, but sit down to a test and you know nothing. But he's honest about how hard his tests are.
I used to hate Biology, but I enjoy Bio now!
Dr. Bos is my favorite professor I've ever had. He is extremely helpful if you ask questions and go to his office hours. He also eats in the dining courts once a week to talk with students. Hardly anyone showed up, so no one knew how willing he was to make sure he was effectively teaching his students. Breath of fresh air at a big school.
I am not sure why everyone hates on Dr. Bos. I took AP Biology in high school and didn't pass. I will get either an A or A- in this class. The key is to take advantage of free points and attend all review sessions. He clarifies things right before the exams and even gives you some direct answers. This class changed my outlook on Biology in general.
Great professor and the material was interesting, just tough to get really good grades on the exams. Reading the chapters is a wayyyy good idea. I'll be glad when it's done!
Nice guy and pretty approachable, but his test are impossible.
This class was super tough for me. He doesn't explain things well in lecture and his tests are impossible.
Tests don't match lectures or assignments
Be prepared to teach yourself the material. The lectures have very general ideas, and the exams have very specific details. So go to the lectures for the attendance points, but definitely read and teach yourself.
Dr. Bos knows the material and he does a good job of teaching it, but he makes you work for it. It was a good class, you just have to realize you are going to be devoting a lot of study time to his class.
Dr. Bos made the lectures interesting and he was really good at explaining concepts that were harder to grasp. Make sure that you take good notes, come to class so you can answer the clicker questions, and do the extra credit! The tests are tough, but if you study you can get an A.
The tests are very tough and specific.
Dr. Bos is an excellent lecturer and he is very interested in the material. This class, however, is not a joke. It is definitely not impossible to get a good grade if you put in the work. All material on the exams is covered in lecture, but not always directly. You have to put in effort in order to get the grade.
Dr. Bos is an excellent instructor. Considering how many students he has he does an exceptional job. Class isn't difficult if you read the book and pay attention during lecture. MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND instead of just going through the motions. For example, You can read every single word and still do poorly if you do not understand what you read.
I loved Dr. Bos!! He does a great job of teaching the general concepts, but throwing in interesting little stories and related scientific discoveries every so often too. He is great at demonstrating what is happening visually too. The concept questions are useful too. If you do the work and listen in lecture, it really isn't a hard class at all.
This is not a hard class, but you do need to study. I put in a fair amount of effort and got a B+, but if I had tried a little harder I could have easily gotten an A (I took this a first semester freshman, so I was still figuring out how things worked). There is homework 3 times a week, but he provides a lot of extra credit.
Dr. Bos is friendly and very approachable. The tests are fairly difficult but if you put time in, you will do well. He also encourages students to join him for lunch in the dining courts to ask questions. Definitely a very smart guy and enjoys what he does
His lectures were very interesting. I regret not going to office hours because he seems like he could be a big help in the future.
He's an awesome professor. Bos is good at making class interesting and engaging students. If you don't go to lecture, the class will be difficult. If you go to lecture and pay attention, the class will be just fine. Lecture slides are posted before lecture but are full of blank spaces, so if you go to lecture you can fill them in.
I had Dr. Bos for Biology 110 and 111. Great professor. He makes the lectures interesting. Lectures are optional but has clicker questions for points. Overall the class is fair. Tests are on the harder side but re-watch lectures, read the book, go to office hours, do the key concepts and you'll be fine. You have to work for your grade in here.
I love biology and Dr. Bos made me love it even more. He's a great lecturer. Very engaging and would reply within the day if I had any questions. You do the homework prior to the lecture so that you already have an idea of what he will be talking about. The test questions usually require you to apply your knowledge not just restate facts learned.
I took both BIOL 110 and 111 with Dr. Bos. His material is difficult but can be cemented by recitations and lab. I didn't attend a lot of classes and therefore I didn't get a very good grade. Studying with other people definitely helps.
I had Dr Bos for BIOL 110 and 111 and he is a great professor. His test are easy, all you have to do is study the lecture slides and review past exams. I would also recommend going to the review sessions for the exams throughout the semester. His lectures were very interesting! There is surprise clicker questions so just make sure you go to class
The man, the myth, the legend. He will destroy you.
