Pretty easy teacher, class participation is a must! Really easy about 3 essays the whole semester, but can be hard grader. Really easy homework too.
3 essays throughout the semester and weekly blog posts. The class was pretty but he can be a harsh grader. He's really rude and kicks people out of class for not breathing the way he wants you to breath. Don't buy the text book, never used it.
Pretty Straightforward class. Every day's schedule is online as well as due dates. Class is based around writing about popular culture which is neat. He is a pretty fair grader and I think he cares about you improving as a writer. He can be a little passive-aggressive and a tad condescending but for the most part, an OK guy.
Really awesome professor. Class is based off of critical thinking, popular culture, and loads of rhetoric. He definitely shines his interest into teaching the class. Easy A, especially since he offers good feedback before you turn in a published paper. Only 3 essays, write a blog and requires you watch Orange is the New Black. DON'T BUY THE BOOK.
He really just wants you to express your own opinion in your writing. I found him to grade my papers fairly. He gives great feedback too. Honestly you don't need the book. The first couple of weeks we brought it twice and you can kind of bank off other people and read together. Save yourself $60.
I had Boyles for 101 and 102 and he was great! I loved the pop culture aspect from 101 and 102 was meant to expand your mind to the topics that a lot of college kids can relate to. If the class is disrespectful of him (texting, talking to others, etc) he gets incredibly sassy. It's funny if you're not at the end of his criticism. Super easy A.
He's very passive aggressive. He gets mad if you look the wrong way and tells you to leave class right away. He's a bit awkward too, choosing him as a professor was a mistake.
This is a great class, but it's not an easy pass as far as classes go.
This professor is awesome, choose him and never regret .
His class was very interesting. He helped me a lot. And he is a really cool man. Really enjoy his class
He's a decent professor. He makes the class interesting and relevant to whatever is going on currently in the nation. He seems to care about his students. I liked him right up until he assigned a group project, but that's mostly my group's fault. His class is easy to pass, go to him when he is willing to look over papers if you want a solid A.
I have always hated English until I had Mr. Boyles. He is so helpful and understanding. Open to listen and gives awesome feedback. Class discussions were interesting and target college aged students, along with homework. Flexible schedule. Directions are clear. Not your average English class. TAKE THIS CLASS I LOVED IT! Favorite professor!
The class may be a little awkward at fist if people do not participate in class, but stay in the class. It is pretty easy and his style of teaching is laid back but he gets his point across.
Okay class, avoid if possible. If he didn't agree with your point of view he would take off points. I had to go to writing center to ensure I had a great essay, some extra credit
Overall awesome teacher! He demands punctuality and your attention in class, but that's because he's really passionate and cares for the education of his students. I recommend him to anyone who wants to learn something and improve their writing.
David is a really good professor. He engages with his students and makes sure that we understand the concepts on hand. However, if you don't want to focus on one sole topic the entire class, don't take him. He liked to cover a large topic and have us expand on it, which I think is great but is not for everyone.
Class is very easy, but it is extremely boring. Definitely not a bad class to be in because you can just sit on your computer and get an A, but also it is not the most interesting course.
Very solid professor. He wants you to learn many important skills for the professional world. Definitely take him if you want to learn!
Mr. Boyles is probably the best English teacher that I have ever had to this point! He cares about his students and wants them to learn and succeed. He makes the topics in class interesting and doesn't give an absurd amount of homework. Take this class with him, especially if you have a demanding major like me!
You are literally graded on nothing in this class- he gives you a "grading contract" at the beginning of the semester that outlines the expectations, and as long as you meet them, you get an A. You pretty much just have to show up and do the work and you get an A. He can be a little awkward but overall is a good and organized professor.
If there's anything you wanted to write about, I recommend this professor. He gave my class a whole quarter to write about something in society we were passionate about. Even better, he abandons grade percentages to eliminate the worry about taking the class for a grade. If you take the class I recommend you pick reliable group members.
I appreciate the grading-contract as grades in English usually are pretty pointless, as students then only write to get a good grade and it's impossible to know how your teacher will interpret it. Dr. Boyles is very straightforward where if you put in the solid work and attend class, you will do well. Overall I enjoyed the class and material a lot!
He used a grading contract, so you do your work, you get an A. I think that's a good thing for an English class. It was kinda boring. To make it more worthwhile, he should encourage more controversial and conversation debate in the class.
David is a real king! I had his class last semester and was so sad when his class filled up before I could take it again this semester. He allows room for creativity and gave interesting topics each day in class. Highly recommend taking this class.
I loved his class! From the beginning, he had the entire semester planned out start to finish. He was always sure to give great feedback, and was always nice to talk to as well. He provides many useful links on his website, such as various resources I otherwise wouldnt have known about on campus. Creative way to make English a fun class to attend!
This class was one of the easiest classes I have ever taken in my entire life, but the material was ridiculous. Professor is much more likely to give you an A if you agree with his stance on issues, even if your work is of much lower quality than those who disagree. Take him for the easiest A of your life, but don't expect to learn much.
Professor Boyles is very kind and can be easily contacted. It's a relatively easy A. No busy work, the assignments have a purpose, and there aren't many of them. Everyday in- class discussions that aren't graded, only to use to your benefit for when you write your papers. It was a fun class to have and not stress about, just do your work.
Grading contract, so if you do the work, you will get an A+. The class has tons of group discussions to help you towards writing papers, and he will always give feedback to improve. He is an activist himself, but he won't shove his ideas down your throat. You can tell what he cares about by what he gears material towards. I loved this class!
has a grading contract that guarantees an A as long as you do the assignments and show up to class. it's a really fun class and you talk about real-life, modern issues and then write about it. 2 papers and lots of discussion board posts and a final project. you can get an A+ if you go to 3 asu events as well.
Professor Boyles is the best professor you can take for ENG105 or ENG101! He has a grading contract that states that as long as you do all the work (effort shown) you get an A. You can get an A+ by going to three ASU events that he puts on a calendar. This was the least stressful english class I have ever taken and everything was super interesting!
If you have the ability to take him, do it!! He made me love English when I hated it coming from high school. He has a grading contract where as long as you do the work required with effort, you will get an A. While this seems like an easy way out, it actually encourages people to take risks and deeply engage with the material in interesting ways.
Boyles is an amazing teacher! There is a lot of group assignment work but he also makes sure all the books he assigns are pretty cheap! He wants to help people succeed!! He has a couple of important papers & a final that is easy if you have a big imagination. Take this class & really engage with this guy if you want to learn anything & keep an A.
David is great!! He makes the class very interesting by allowing you to write about what you are interested in. He uses a grading contract, so essentially if you turn in all assignments and put effort into them you will get an A. The class focuses on current issues and his perspective is more liberal, so decide whether that's for you.
David was interesting. I mean he was a good teacher for sure! But if you disagree with his liberal views, you may as well just drop the class. He makes you read a lot, there have only been 2 essays, no tests, no quizzes. I would take him again, heres my advice for an A in his class, fake it till you make it.
Professor Boyles is awesome! He's super progressive and doesn't believe in the five paragraph standard format nor the lettered grading system. Basically, if you put forth a good effort on each essay, you will get solid feedback to become a better writer and an A+. Seriously, take his classes. 3 essays total with weekly discussion posts.
I took Dr Boyle's Queer Youth in the Media Seminar this semester and had an amazing time. The class is a great elective choice if you're a freshman looking to fill your schedule, and the class is so fun and enriching. Dr Boyles is a great professor who creates a great environment for learning and discussion. Would absolutely take again!
I dreaded taking English but Professor Boyles keeps the class engaged and he won't bore you to death. Do the work and participate in class and you'll get an A.
So easy and really nice when it comes to grading. Didnt have to worry about my grade
He is a really great teacher who cares a lot about his students. He values his students' mental health over deadlines. He also carefully chooses books for you to read that are not overly difficult or long and that are very relevant. This semester for ENG 105, we read March (graphic novel) and a collection of Greta Thunberg's speeches. Great prof!
Professor Boyles was one of my favorites from the semester. As an advanced class, he relies heavily on self-paced work; however, he understands when something gets in the way, and does not penalize for late work. His grading is easy and clear, and he provides as much feedback as possible so you know exactly what to work on and how to fix it.
This was my first semester at ASU and David Boyles was, by far, my favorite professor. The assignments all surrounded interesting and current events and we only read two short books, one of them being a graphic novel. Boyles grades based on individual effort and writing skills, so as long as you put in your best efforts, you will get an A+.
Excellent class I tried to take his following class but it was full.
Stop Reading This & Add Boyles's Class To Your Cart Now! Professor Boyles's main goal when teaching is to make student's better writers. His grading contract lessens lots of pressure because as long as you attempt to meet the requirements of the assignment, you will be given an A+. Best ENG 105 Professor out there!
He was probably the nicest professor I've ever had! Was extremely caring and understanding of any outside problems we were having. Taught the class extremely well and overall just amazing. If you can, I highly recommend signing up for his class!
Basically he is the most understanding teacher and will give you an A if he sees youre trying. Take. His. Class.
Very kind and understanding professor. Uses a grading contract, so if you show up to every class and turn in every assignment you will get an A+. Very helpful to students, can turn assignments in late, and genuinely wants students to learn and experiment instead of focusing on grades. Take him! His class will fill up fast.
Please only take this class if you care. Boyles is an amazing professor who only wants to see his students succeed but when I took him I often found his limits being tested by obnoxious students who are on track to drop out by second semester. If you actually plan on earning your degree though I can't recommend him enough!
Prof Boyles gives you the tools to learn and lets you decide if you want to use them or not. If you're motivated to improve your writing and be creative this is the class to do it in! If you want an easy A without doing much, you can also do that in his class, but you won't learn and that's on you. Overall, a great guy and caring professor. 10/10!
He is an amazing professor who really cares about his students! He doesn't believe in penalizing students for not doing well on their writing assignments. If you put effort into your essays, you get an automatic A and if you don't, you get a chance to resubmit. He even has a self-care guide to help you navigate ASU resources, which I found helpful.
Professor Boyles really cares about his students and is very compassionate. 10/10 suggest taking his class, if you turn in all your assignments you are sure to succeed.
He's a really amazing professor. Definitely an easy A is you show up and try. He doesn't grade on skills, he grades on participation. Just turn in your stuff and he will give you an automatic 100%. I tried to take his ENG 102 class, but it filled up too fast.
Prof. Boyles is AMAZING! I literally don't know how anyone can leave this class without an A+. He gives you extra credit opportunities, SO much time to complete your work, and is a super fair grader. On top of that, he is such a kind person and understands that students have more classes other than his own. Such a great class. Absolutely recommend.
Take ENG 102 with professor Boyles if you can. His class is structured amazingly well and I don't know how is possible to not finish with an A in this class
David Boyles was a great ENG 102 pick. If you turn everything in, the A+ is guaranteed. I enjoyed the class thoroughly and never had to stress over it which was HUGE for my second semester experience. I will say that class time can be a bit boring or monotonous, but this is outweighed by all the other pros of the class.
Boyles is by far one of my favorite professors at ASU, he teaches the content well and really does care about everyone's success in the class. The grading consists mostly of a few papers which you have ample time to write and you can pick the topic yourself. All you have to know is that he is better than all other English 102 and 101 professors.
He's a great teacher and was such an easy class. There was a lot of assignments but you had lots of time to do them. Grading is very clear, he basically grades on participation. Just follow the directions and you'll get 100% in the class. He really cares about his students and will work with them around any conflicts. Would definitely take again.
I took Boyles for the lia 194 class and this class was pretty fun and interesting. They make group discussions interesting and overall just a great teacher.
David is a wonderful, caring professor. He prioritizes communication, and always clearly explains things. I appreciated his passion for the LIA 194 class and what he teaches, because it shows and it makes the experience better for the student.
Prof. Boyles just wants you to write! That's it- it doesn't really matter what, he just wants you to enjoy writing. His class is graded entirely on completion, so no worrying over rubrics or grades- it's a refreshing break from other classes. Also, Prof. Boyles is very inclusive and kind, and often cancels class if students are feeling overworked!
David is super caring, and he cares that students enjoy and give a good faith effort into writing. The assignments are easy, and David grades off of good faith effort while giving good feedback to help improve your writing. I hated writing before this class, it is so refreshing.
His personality might not be for everyone, but he's very organized so you know what's happening each class and when things are due. As long as you do your best and follow directions you'll get 100 since he grades on effort and offers extra credit. The only way not to get an A is to skip too many classes and submit work late. Not super fun, but easy
One of the best professors for English at ASU. The projects and class work is pretty much doable with extra credit opportunities.
Boyles was really nice and was very clear on what needs to be done and when. Nothing to crazy but be ready to discuss with people around you a lot. Got pissed once and always waits for someone to respond when he asks a question. Just do the homework and you could breeze through class.
Boyles' lectures are a great insight into what is happening in todays society. I loved the free range writing, less structure more free thinking. I highly recommend boyles if you struggle as a writer because he has the ability to open your mind to new horizons!
Took his LIA course freshmen year and absolutely loved the lectures, modules and activities! Helped me view such topics in a new light and I could not have had a better professor.
Very patient and thoughtful in helping me, I need extra assistance due to a disabillity. Always welcoming during office hours.
Professor Boyles is amazing! He is really passionate about the subject matter and was always understanding if you couldnt the do weekly assignment or make it to class. His class is extremely fun if you're interested in the subject matter. Weekly assignments were really easy, and he always told us to do the most we could before the next class.
David is a great professor; the class itself is super easy. All you had to do was write a reflection every week on the subject matter. Discussions happen every class on the material and David always interacts with the students in the discussion. Overall, they are a great teacher and the class is interesting!
David is an amazing English teacher because his main goal of the class is for you to become a better writer. Assignments are very easy you automatically get 100% for turning the assignment in. Extra credit is offered but not required but was very helpful. Overall my favorite professor I've taken here at ASU!
Professor David is a great professor for ENG101. This is my first semester and I was a bit worried about how class structure would be. He makes it pretty clear to understand what the criteria are to receive the highest grade and is easy to follow through. Would highly recommend to take his class!
This was the best class I have taken so far. As long as you do your work every week (which is not a lot) You will definitely get an A in this class. After a certain point the homework is literally just extra credit, you can easily get more than 100%. The professor is nice and the way he sets up the class is way better than other english classes imo
THE friendliest, kindest, and most compassionate professor I have had thus far. Love David!
David Boyles is the kindest professor I have ever come across. He is so kind and genuinely cares to help you improve as a writer. This class is primarily based on writing experiences from the textbook and is completion based and as long as you follow the guidelines, you will get 100% in the class.
If you do the work you will easily get an 100
Prof Boyles is the best to get your ENG 101 Credit out of the way. I had him at 7:30 AM which sucked but he would often cancel class if he felt like there was no need for it and it gave us a nice break from such an early class. His assignments were easy to understand and fun to do. Take his class!
David is very clear on the expectations of the course. Its simple if your do the work you WILL get a 100. This course has truly made me love writing!
Mr. Boyles gives good writing advice and clearly cares a lot about the practice of writing; this extends to his grading policy as well, in which he mainly looks to encourage putting effort into assignments. There truly were not any points of stress this semester. I feel incredibly lucky to have taken his class for my 1st semester of college.
David was an amazing professor. As long as you turn in assignments that you clearly put effort into, you will get a 100%. There was absolutely zero stress when taking his class.
Legend. Highly recommend him.
Goat. Loved the class
He grades fairly, and the class is very interactive and enjoyable. I believe I have become a better writer through this class. Writing assignments weren't too long and were mostly enjoyable and interesting.
I would recommend professor Boyles to anyone looking for an easy A with a caring professor. He's awesome!
David Boyles might be single-handedly the best English professor I have ever come across. He is a very calm professor, has a clear class structure, and offers a lot of extra credit. Assignments are graded by participation but he then offers insightful feedback in the comments. I genuinely think he made me a better writer. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Take his class. David is awesome! He cares about his students so much and his class is an easy A!
Take this class if you're doing 105! The content is straightforward, but doesn't feel useless. As long as you complete the work and attend, you will receive an A.
Greatest teacher of all time, nice guy. you can get like a 120% in the class if you just do what he tells you, coursework will take like 1 hour per week. Definitely take it with this guy other english teachers grade harshly and have essays. But Boyles has no essays realistically and has grades based on good faith effort so take him. 10/10 class.
SUCH A GOOD PROFESSOR. Genuinely would be doing yourself such a disservice if you don't take 105 with him. Attendance is mandatory, but there are 4 excused absences, and you can get all your work done in class. The assignments are so simple and barely take much work. You can easily get over 100 in the class if you just do the one assignment a week.
I loved this class! Very informative and the assignments were fun! Missing class was not penalized, but I always wanted to go anyways. They clearly cared about their students and wanted to connect and set you up for success. They offered lots of extra credit opportunities and were very relaxed on assignment deadlines. Definitely recommend them!
David is the goat. If you have the chance to take them for English, please do. Their course is super easy and they really care about making you a good writer. They're so passionate about their work. I am taking them again next semester, that is how much I loved the class. 1000% recommend.
All that matters for the class is that you show up and give your best on your work, because there is no reason not to get an A+, as everything is graded on effort, not accuracy. Would definitely take again.
Gives amazing feedback, massive hater of AI, pass or fail class, loved what they do, cares about all of their students, and is truly the best ENG105 professor. They can be a little sassy at times but as long as you put in effort you will get an A. Definitely made me a better writer and assignments are not bad at all!
Easy A as long as you go to class because you only get four absences (even if you're sick). There were times that I found him condescending but other than that a great professor.
