He gives very unfair timed tests.
His tests are extremely hard because you are timed and there is too much to do in the time that you have.
He made me cry. I was one of only 5 students who passed the class out of a class of 60.
everyone droped
Really, really, really hard, and not helpful. He can be very rude if you have questions. Would not recommend
He is good at explaining things but has very hard tests. I did homework and studied but failed all 4 tests. I barely passed the class with a D,when I normally get A's and B's in math
not good
He is the worst teacher I have ever had! He screws you over in the end!
ALL of the above is true. I would not take a class from him again.
Tests are very hard! Does not explain what will be on the tests, and has no review! He seems more interested in getting the points across instead of helping the students
If you take this guy you might as well throw your grade away! Out of 34 enrolled students 8 were left after the drop date.Of those 8, 3 people passed this class. He even jokes about how people fail, and showed no remorse for doing it. I dont know how this guy is still teaching. You've been warned!
Stay away!If you are the type that enjoy living heck, then by all means sign up. He's unmerciful and brutal with his tests, yet doesn't teach well enough to justify giving such difficult exams.
He teaches fast. He tries to explain things, but I eventually was too intimidated to ask too many questions. I think probably two people in my class even passed, and they knew everything before hand.
Don't listen to the math haters. Daivd Brandt is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He answers questions fully, even if he needs to remind the student that the sq. root of 9 is + or - 3. Too many students need to take math 1010 first. For a tough teacher, try Kojinovic!
was never very clear or helpful
For those of us who don't test well, we don't do well in a class that your only grades come from tests and quizzes. The majority of the info that we are tested on is not taught in class or explained thoroughly enough to be tested on. He is a very unfais and heartless teacher.
He is really knowledgable and is well prepared for classes but it seemed like he always tried to make it a lot more difficult than it had to be. I would NOT recommend him to someone who struggles in anyway with a math class.
this guyis the most heartless teacher i have ever taken he makes you feel like an idiot for asking a question 75% of his students fail if you want a teacher that cares how you do take Christine Walker. She knows how to teach and wants her students to learn.

Run!!! If you have Brandt on your schedule, transfer out and find another teacher. I did pass his class, but his teaching style was ridiculous and his tests & quizzes were a lot more difficult than they needed to be. Plus, what's with looking up at the ceiling ALL OF THE TIME anyway?
Has difficult tests. Unfortunately, if you don't like to think, you won't do well. I had to do plenty of homework, but ended up actually learning something, and got an A in the class. If you're taking this class, you need to know the material. He's one of the best teachers I have ever had.
If you are not a math major or do not plan on teaching math at Harvard, I wouldn't even look at this guy. He says that he takes his own tests to see if they are of appropriate difficulty & length for the time allowed. He writes the stupid tests, of course he can finish them, none of us could though. About half of my class ended up retaking 1210.
He is not an easy teacher. If you really struggle with basic concepts of math, then don't take him. But if you are even slightly competent in math then don't worry. Just don't be afraid to ask, and do all the homework and you won't fail. He does look at the ceiling a lot though...
Teh absolute worst teacher I have ever had. I never passed a single test. Plus he didn't even care. Take Sheldon instead.
Worst teacher I have ever had. His tests are impossible to pass, and that's all your grade is based on. He is one of those professors that are very proud of their low pass rates because it means that their course is "rigorous." NEVER take his class...
he can be helpful if you are willing to ask questions and do all your homework and live in the math lab i would not take this class from this teacher again unless you have.
I have always liked Math. I have always been very good at math. Then I had BRandt. DO NOT TAKE HIM!! His test are impossible, and he doesn't seem to care about the students. I'm taking math 1050 over again and I'm passing with an A. In Math you need to take a teacher that wants the students to pass and Brandt is not one. Take Pete He's great!
The test averages were about 50%. You can't do any makeup. He doesn't believe in "curving". His tests were evil. Partial credit was like 1 point on a ten point questoin. I usually get A's and B's on my math test including Calc 2 and Calc 3. This guy is tough so if you want to take the class again take it from him. :) Good luck deciding.
This is by far the worst teacher I have ever had! I loved math and I have always done really well in it until I got into his class. He tells you that the class average is a C-. Does that tell you anything? Half the class was in there for their second or third time. Don't take it from him unless you want to take this class twice!
I wish I had read reviews of this "teacher" before I took a class from him. I found his class to be extremely discouraging. I believe that a 50% class average on a test directly reflects the quality of instruction by a teacher. Far to few examples are given during lectures to help solidify the concepts that are presented. Avoid his class if you can
His class was so much harder than it needed to be. He's a nice guy, but he enjoys making it hard. He does take pride that his class is "rigorous" and likes making the tests MUCH harder than they need to be. I did well in this class, but only because I lived in the math lab. I will NEVER take a class from him again. The man has issues!
HE IS THE WORST TEACHER EVER! IF YOU GET HIM AS A TEACHER GET OUT OF HIS CLASS A.S.A.P. HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH AT ALL. I LEARNED MORE BY READING THE CHAPTERS ON MY OWN. 75% OF MY CLASS DID NOT PASS. HE BASES ON TESTS ONLY AND WHAT HE SAYS WILL BE ON THE TEST IS NOT. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HIM AS A TEACHER TO ANYONE! HE SHOULD NOT TEACH.
Just run the other direction! This guy is a freak.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!! I love math and until this class I had never gotten below an A- in a math class. I failed everyone of his test.I am retaking it and getting an A with less effort than I put in his class.
Class started with 44 students, by the end of the semester there were 4 of us. And he only passed 3 of the 4!
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken, which makes lazy students run for the door. I did just about all the homework twice, but ended up with over 100% cumulative test score and an understanding of the subject. If you're lazy or cowardly, take it from someone else. If you want to set yourself up for a future in math, take it from Brandt. Easie
I stayed up until 5:30 studying the material for the test the next day and I only got a 49! He doesn't grade fair and even if you TRY the problem you're not guaranteed any sort of credit! Maybe 1 point on a 16 point question. I wish i knew what a horrible teacher he was. RUN PEOPLE! He didn't even care about the students. He WANTED us to fail.
This was by far the worst class I ever had. I nearly quit college because of my experience!! I had never put so much work into a class in my life as I did this one. I stayed up many late hours studying. When I took the test sometimes I would have everything right but the answer and I would only get 1 out of 15 points. In other words, RUN!!!!!!
Best math teacher ever. Clear explanations, very patient when answering questions. Course is well structured, thorough syllabus. Always willing to meet after class or evenings. Test questions are right out of the homework, and he drops the lowest test score.
I am a straight A student and have recieved the highest grade in all my previous math classes. This class sucked. He gives students only 50 minutes to take a 10 question test - but the questions are hard and you are graded solely on your test scores. He doesn't explain things well so be prepared to study alot on your own.
Great teacher. Totally committed to teaching students. Material is well explained, formulas are proved, and lots of examples are worked. Tests contain only homework problems. Bonus points offered on every test, and you can drop your lowest test. You must work hard to pass, but I expected this when I started college.
He teaches the material well but expects you to know how to do it just as well as him for the test if you plan on a good grade expect to attend class everytime and do all your homework at least twice
he trys.
Grade comes only from tests, tests are timed and require more time to correctly complete than the 50 min. he allows - won't even give students an extra few minutes. His personality sucks - acts as if math is his validation in life and thus to make you fail makes him better. Don't take his class if you don't test well and fast. I'm a A+ student.
This class was really helpful for me. He explains everything clearly, and works lots of examples. always willing to answer questions in class. First math class where I really learned things instead of just memorizing. His standards are high but reasonable for a college level class. You MUST do the HW. The tests contain only HW problems.
If you don't test well, and you don't like homework, I wouldn't take him. If you struggle with basic algebra, I wouldn't take him. I may have to retake the class because I didn't really put much time into the homework, but if I take it again, I'll take it from him. Decent teacher, and plenty willing to help you in his office hours.
He tried to trick you on tests quizes and he doesnt give any points for attendance and quizes. i feel like he sets students up to fail. all his tests and quizes come from the homework, but he never goes over the homework, he is always very rushed.
Sucks
the way he tests is hard (timed tests) and strict grader and sucky questions dont take
The book is supposed to aid the teacher in teaching the class; in this case, the book is all anyone has as the Dave took his notes word for word from the book.
Great teacher. This was the first math class where I had to prove theorems. Prof Brandt really helped me learn how to construct math proofs. He has high standards, and you must do the HW.
I just finished taking Math for Mr. Brandt. He was HORRIBLE!!!!!!! He was so rude whenever I had to ask a question. The material itself isn't difficult, but his tests are designed to trick you. I don't mean the usual level of difficulty, he enjoys making you fail. He looks like he'd be nice, but he's awful.
BY far the worst teacher i have EVER had to deal with. I would never take the time to look up David to write something about him. But with David i feel obligated to warn anyone who takes him.. All grade is from tests, and he will not give you enough time to take the test! Does not care about students and is a terriable teacher!
So difficult to understand. He teaches the class expecting everyone to already be great mathematicians.
He just repeats the textbook word for word and his tests are very hard and he is not a forgiving grader. I did not like his class at all.
Unless you are a child prodigy don't plan on passing no amount of self-determination will help you pass his tests which are what your entire grade is based on.
Dr. Brandt is a good teacher, writing out definitions and examples in class. I struggle in math and I always understood what he was explaining. But his tests are hard if you don't have a grasp of the problems. He doesn't test on many story problems which is great!
He was not helpful!! There were 40 students in my class and only one passed... this was because she had taken the class previously. I have advised countless students against his class. I am a 4.0 student and this class was hard for me.
I really enjoyed his class. I learned more in his class than in any of my high school classes. He doesn't just give you formulas to memorize, he shows why they're true. You have to spend a lot of time studying and doing all the homework problem.
Brandt is not a bad guy. He just doesn't care. I got an A in 1010, the level below his class and I either got a D or failed his class. DO NOT TAKE.
The homework isn't required in his class. It's pretty boring, but hey it's math.
I really like Mr. Brandt. He does take attendance, but I don't think he counts it. He doesn't require you to turn in the homework, but all the test questions are from it. I don't like that he gives tests in class, because if you are a slow test taker it would be hard to finish. He is very nice and explains things if you don't understand.
I did not like him at all. He was very word for word and wrote unnecessary sentances. His test are very hard and he only counts test for your grade and never counts your homework so unless you are a very self motivating person this class is not for you.
Brandt's a hard teacher who really won't work with you. The grade mainly comes from tests no homework. He gives partial credit but if you don't do it his way he docks points even if you get it right. He will often give a zero even if you do the work. I went to him for help and felt like he didn't care, I learned most from the book and the math lab.
do not take, extremely hard, he treats 1050 like you are in 4000-5000 range, for a 1050 class unless you are a math genius you will fail his class, his tests are 6 questions and are extremely easy to fail, the only people passing class are those who have failed 1050 before and are retaking it...
David Brandt is a very nice person, however I would advise you not to take any of his classes. My best subject is math. I put every spare minute with late nights studying and attended every class he had. However, I still did horrible! You must learn it all on your own and unfortunately I hired a tutor too late in the semester to save my grade.
I HIGHLY recommend Brandt! He was very helpful. Every time someone had a question, he stopped what he was doing immediately and made sure they understood before continuing. You don't turn in homework and he gives quizzes and tests throughout semester. He drops lowest quiz and test. He gives partial credit for work. He is an excellent teacher!!!
do not take class at all. if its your last resort wait till next semester and get a good teacher before everybody else regersters.
I'm sure the guy has good intentions, but with no homework being graded you'll be left with quizzes and tests only; which are easy to fail. Homework is my motivator, if you like not having homework and studying out of a text this class is for you. He writes in cursive. You never know when quizzes will be. Tests are listed. No canvas is used.
ridiculous. hardest math teacher ever. only nine probs on exam and he makes every problem the hardest way he can think of. im able to do the homewok but his exams r homework on steroids. class average on last exam was a 50. no curve. ill end up taking this class again from another teacher.
Brandt is a nice guy and has good intentions, but if you struggle in math you will not pass this class. The tests are only a few questions and extremely hard and without a curve or homework to pad the grade it's difficult to make the cut. If you are good at math you'll probably be fine, but if not then I don't recommend this professor.
Grade based 100% on exams. I have always been really good at math but I could not pass his class
My work schedule changed. He was kind to allow me to transfer into his class, which I changed to an audit within two weeks. He was-is gifted in math and teaches to gifted students. My recommendations to him, as he taught, were to record his lectures and post them for review or sale them, excellent. He could do this in a closed group on Facebook.
This professor is ridiculous! His class is exam based ONLY! His exams are extremely difficult and if you can't finish it in the 50 min he gives you.. too bad. Most of the class fails the exams. He knows his stuff but doesn't care if you do. Don't take from him unless you are very gifted in 1050 math! I Withdrew. I will take it from someone else!
Horrible teacher. I didn't understand any concept he taught. I wish I would have followed my gut feeling at the beginning of the semester and transferred to a different teacher!! DO NOT TAKE IF YOU WANT TO PASS THIS CLASS.
Only grades tests...
There are a lot of people complaining about the class being exam only. Personally I preferred this because the homework he assigns is VERY IDENTICAL to the tests. And he actually calls the homework "exam study guide". Would you rather have a teacher that gives you some points for homework but gives you exams far off from what the homework showed?
Some people have complained that Brandt doesn't know care about students progressing or if they know the material. I found that to be VERY untrue during my class. He took time to slowly go over step by step how to do certain tricky problems and was familiar with the parts where students would get tripped up and made sure you understood.
He is a professor that speaks math lingo not basic words you understand. I've asked him for simple clarification on some stuff covered in class at the end of lecture and he made me feel like i was a complete moron. Don't take if you want to save your GPA. I will never take a class from him again.
He is defiantly hard. He spends a lot of time proving formulas and writes down every word he says. He doesn't spend a lot of time explaining the material, so you have to learn the material on your own. Homework isn't worth any points and attendance isn't mandatory.
This class would be great if you already know what you're doing in college algebra. If you need to be taught, taking the class from a different professor is highly recommended. Nothing counts on your grade except for tests.
I really like him as a professor and I think that he gave very clear instructions but he only grades on Tests. They were not too bad, but the Final is what really hurt my grade. so study hard and ask questions and you will be fine.... if you don't then good luck.
Tests are EASY, since they are PRECISELY what is assigned on the homework. Many lazy students will complain and drop him in favor of an easier teacher. If you don't learn the material, then you won't pass, but if you want to learn something, instead of just skating by like you have all your life, then take Brandy. Do the homework, pass the test.
He assigns a lot of homework but doesn't collect it so it's hard to know if you are understanding the material. His tests are difficult and it's important to do tons of studying outside of class to get somewhat of a decent grade. Study everything that is in the book, not just what is discussed in class because it will all be present on the exams.
I have a 3.85 overall GPA and a more mature student. Math has never been my strong suit, but I an not deficient either. His tests are ridiculous and NOT exactly like the homework. I received a D in his class, yet retook the class the next semester from a different professor, even did it in a "block," and rec'd an A. That should tell you something.
Mr. Brandt was one of the hardest teachers I've ever taken from. He wrote down everything he said, which left no room for him to expand on necessary (essential to passing) topics. Also, he never updated canvas so you never really knew how you were doing in the class. Would not take a class from ever again.
Professor Brandt is incredibly kind, but his class is insanely difficult. He moves VERY fast in the lecture and is on to the next topic before you've even processed what he said or wrote it down- he wants you to write down EVERYTHING he says. Homework is assigned every night but not graded; the tests are only a couple questions and your whole grade
Honestly professor Bandt is not a bad guy, but this has to be the worst course I've taken so far. He has very high expectations that were impossible for me to reach, even after seeking extra help and studying like crazy. The exams are hard and calculators are not allowed. I would not recommend this professor to anyone unless you are good at math.
He told me I was stupid!! He told me I was the worst student. I stuck it out and he won! He didn't want me to pass therefore I didn't. He is the worst teacher ever.
Really hard professor. I took math 1050 last semester and it was easier. Tests are pretty much your whole grade. Gets upset if a student asks a question and takes it as an insult to his teaching. Plan on going to the mathlab and learning everything there if you take his class.
The professor provides no feedback on home work or tests. What homework you do is expected to be your notes for his tests, even if you're answers were wrong. He doesn't help you correct your mistakes so that you understand. There is no room for error. I retook this class from a more friendly teacher and have earned an A.
He doesn't explain things well and skips over steps because he assumes you should know how to it. He doesn't like when you ask questions and says there's not enough time to go over questions. The tests are really hard and they are the only thing that count. DO NOT TAKE MATH 1050 FROM HIM!
I just want to give hope to those who struggled in his class. I got a really low F in his class. He even suggested I consider if college is for me. I then took it from another professor and got a B. Don't stress there is hope from other teachers at UVU!
Worst professor I have ever had. I did the homework, went to the math lab and studied like crazy and still failed the class. His tests are ridiculously hard. Took the same class from a different professor and got an A
