So long as you will read and study the material you'll enjoy the class.
Nice and easy-going...no problems what so ever
CONFUSING, RAMBLING, DISORGANIZED
Dr. Brown is actually a great guy!... If you're having problems in his class, go talk to him... He will try to help... He's a very reasonable man. His lectures can be boring, but pay attention, & you'll do fine!
I thought Dr. Brown was a great teacher, I could tell he loves philosophy which made the class thorough and very enjoyable.
You either get the class or you don't. He put me right to sleep from the first day. All essay tests, and you have to know your stuff. If in depth intellectual thinking isn't you, DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS BECAUSE IT WILL BE EXTREMELY HARD!
Knows his subject extremely well. You have to keep up with the mateerial. If you do, you should be fine. Maybe not a super teacher because he goes fast but a dedicated and very intelligent person. Go and see him and he will help you to understand the ma
He expects you to have a mastery of the subject even if you are in the beginning course. Be prepared to read!
His tests are all essay questions - the first test, we wrote 8 essays, its really crazy!! his lectures are EXTREMELY disorganized!! But he's not a jerk or anything though...he is alright, but overall I just don't really recommend him...maybe if he had different style tests then he would be cool..
horrible teaching style, i did not enjoy religion class as much as i thought i would. it was like torture sometimes! all his tests are essay tests where you have to write like 8 long essays, plus theres a 7 page paper so you better like to write >:(
Lets just say... He made me mad! The lectures suck. And he has a funny mouth.
I like hsi class. He is very knowledgable and prepares well for his class. Good guy!
OMG!!! Writing ESSAYS in college!!?!?! Don't be a tool. Brown is great, really knows his stuff. Like you are going to do multiple choice for a college religion course?! Perhaps those that can't be bothered to put any effort in should consider Strayer or University of Phoenix.
Excellent teacher. Unlike a lot of teachers at NOVA he requires you to take notes, read the books that are assigned. If you go to class, pay attention and take notes the tests are extremely easy. Yes they are essay format but if you have gone to class and paid attention they are quite easy.
Great teacher, very nice. Learned a lot.
He is unclear. Hard to understand because he babbles about irrevelant material while teaching. Hard to choose whether material is philosophy or personal liberal views. Even after reading you still may feel like you're off the deep end.. Pick someone else
Like everyone else said...He is unclear in his teaching style. DO hesitate to ask for clarity eventhough you might not understand his response, it just shows that you are interested in what he is talking about; and mention something negative about Pres. Bush on relevant exam questions, and in class (he hates Bush). Good Luck in your studies.
Most of the previous potings are innacurate. He is very logical and organized, although his delevery is somewhat frantic. He seems to really want his students to succeed, and is approachable if you have questions. Don't bother reading the textbook however, it's difficult to understand and everything on the essay exams is covered in lecture.
I thought he was a great teacher. The fact he hated Bush only proved his intelligence. I recommend him to anyone. Willing to work with you until you understand the text. Will set aside time to meet with you.
He is a good teacher. He knows and likes his subject. I enjoyed his class very much.
Professor Brown is a fantastic philosophy teacher, he's very passionate about what he teaches and he is very clear, intelligent and funny. On top of that i love his views on politics and whats going on in the world. I highly recomend him if your taking philosophy!
The only class I've ever come out of and immediately felt sharper and mentally invigorated. Dr. Brown is very clear, and dissects the matierial so thoroughly that everyone understands it. Take notes and know how to explain and defend your arguments on the tests.
He is an interesting and passionate lecturer, he does not enjoy answering questions mid-lecture, and the book is useless. All around, he is a pretty good professor, not too hard not too easy, however, dont take his class if youre easily offended or politically conservative because you will be biting your tounge throughout his insanely liberal rants
Dr Brown is a pretty good techer. However, the material is very confusing...The book does not really help.Make sure you copy the outlines form the board, and read on your own. He gives 1 midterm and a final. I hate philosophy and he made the class very interesting.
Ok teacher to begin with. Not very clear with assignments. Exams are "write as much as you can about this topic". Wanders off the subject easily when talking about Bush-to the point that it's a bit ridiculous, obnoxious and plain annoying. A class that was supposed to broaden the mind to other cultures and peoples turn into an anti-Bush lecture.
I'm a straight "A" student, and I got a "C" in his class. I'm liberal, so that wasn't the problem. Must be because I'm gay... I don't trust this guy, he looks gay but maybe he tries to prove he's not by hatin' on gay people... Whatever, the class stunk, the instructor stunk, my grade stunk, and I don't recommend this B.S. in the first place. DON'T.
Very hard class! Very liberal teacher! Always throws his opinions in about Bush and curses alot! I got an A in the class because I took good notes. Essay test like crazy but grades farely easy, I think. A ton of reading! If you like a teacher who is constantly negative and extremely liberal and don't mind reading alot, this is the teacher for you
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. I am a straight A student and I got a C, even though I took good notes, read the text, did fairly well on the final and I participated in class. I dont understand how he grades but he is not fair AT ALL.
I think Dr.Brown is a decent professor. If you go to class take good notes you should be fine. If you don't like essay exams I would not recommend him. Yes he tends to repeat himself but it is better for you to get a grasp on the concepts. Good Luck!
He has to be one of the worst teachers I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. His constant rants about Bush and modern politics made the already incomprehensible lectures impossible to follow. Even direct questions were either ignored or diverted. Unless you are a philosophy major this is not the class for you. Not a good teacher.
I have to agree what the majority of the others had said. He is a HORRIBLE teacher. Not easy to talk too at all if you have questions. Seems like he really doesn't even know what he's talking about. His grading is awful. DO NOT TAKE HIM! I should have dropped him after the midterm...
He is the best teacher ever. He makes you like the course. He is very open, very helpful, and goes in details. I love his way of teaching. You as a student should read the book and ask questions. Professor Brown is a really good teacher. Highly recommanded!!!
People who don't like him don't like the work philosophy requires of keeping an open mind and thinking for yourself at the same time. I've had him twice now. He is patient, understanding, and knows his subject very well! Do the reading, ask questions, and you WILL get As. Dr. Brown and the philosophies he teaches are both HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
I really love Philosophy and he totally ruined it for me. I had so many questions, but I couldn't form them, because I had no idea what I was learning! I asked if I could do extra credit or anything to raise my grade, and all he said was, "Just do better on the final." Thanks a lot, I got a "D". Mention your dislike for Bush on exams...I'm serious.
Dr. Brown is extremely opinionated and will occasionally rant. His class is hard to keep up with if you don't show up. I didn't have a textbook so I had to take detailed notes to pass. The exams can be very hard or very easy depending on your interest in the subject. The material was interesting to me, so I got an A. He is very hard to approach.
don't take him please..find someone else..
He's a good Latin teacher, knows the language well, and provides some interesting insights on Roman life. At the 201-202 level, you pretty much know it or you don't. If you show up and put in the minimal effort you will do fine. The final grade consisted of only attendence and the final exam, which was translating ~25 lines from the Aeneid.
I had Dr. Brown for Intro to Philosophy and Ethics. If you have any plans of transferring to a four year college, writing well, being challenged and getting your moneys worth for an education, take him. He is not easy for sure but he is surely a gem at NVCC. He is very knowledgeable and approachable. Most people who commented on this site who are A
A students and did not get A's definitely got their first experience of college level expectation at NVCC. Excellent choice for those wanting to major in Philosophy and Religion. He will speak his mind, but you are allowed to speak up as well. Approach him if you need help and be a mature college student. Be on time, do your work!
I appreciated him and his character. Even though I disagreed with his Bush comments, He has a distinct personality. His exams are pretty straight forward. Mention everything in specific detail at least a few pages worth. I didn't know what to expect the first time. If you want a head start, Read Descartes, Leibniz, Kant, Sartre.
He is hard and the material is hard, but if you study the notes and what he tells you is on the test, you should be fine, it does take lots of note taking and I would recommend coming to class. He is an opionioned guy, nice though, to be honest, I didn't enjoy his class, but I had no interest in philosophy.
philosophy 101 is a freshmen course. he did not teach it like one. very hard professor do not take. he gave us 7 essays for the final and said only 4 would be on it 2 pages each . seriously??
ONE OF THE WORST PROFESSORS I HAVE EVER HAD. Makes a hard topic even harder and does not elaborate and clarify when answering fairly complex questions. Nor did he respond well to my asking for help or attempting to meet with him outside of class. DO NOT TAKE HIM....and I hope the university ends his employment.
I don't understand why there's such a fuss re: Dr. Brown. Read the material, take good notes, study, structure your essays well & you will rec an A - I did. This is like a genuine Uni. course. Get used to it. Brown rules.
This is my first failing grade throughout my schooling career. He is the most unhelpful professor out there. His over shadowing views on things cloud the material, it would be fine but since it is a class where you are suppose to be learning about other ways of thinking, it is hard to when he keeps stating that they are ridiculous.
GREAT PROFESSOR
I dreaded his lectures and frankly hated his class. However, exams come straight from the notes. Although, I was intimidated by the one paper he assigned, it simply required one to analyze a central theme in Taoism (make sure you have that textbook- It is the only one of the three you actually need for the course.)
HORRIBLE. DO. NOT. TAKE HIM. unless you are majoring in PHI. Its not even THAT hard..but he makes it hard, I payed attention, took really good notes, read the text, and I participated in class. I dont understand how he grades. I believe there is def some favoritism going on.. he is not fair AT ALL :'(
This guy is the real deal. You need to show up to every class because all exams are based on the notes. He is helpful to those who are actively trying to understand the material but if you don't seem like you're trying, you're toast. All this to say, take the class seriously and you'll do fine. Only slackers have problems with this guy.
This was an easy class and if u HAVE to take a religion course you might as well take him. if u have a legitimate interest in the material however DO NOT step foot in this class. judging by the state of his notes he has not changed the class in possibly over a decade. u get his narrow view on the topic and new opinions receive a scattered response.
He is a very diffcult teacher. I did not use the textbook but I don't think it would have helped anyway. The test was hard and it was pretty much an essay. He won't give you any multiple choice test or anything. JUST write ESSAYS.
He's a nice professor, but i don't recommend him.He is not easy to understand at all! His test are all essays. You have to go to every class to take notes if you want to pass.
For me his class was really interesting and it was clear what we had to study for exam. He gives a lot of extra credit if you ask for it and give you to choose question for it.
Spent alot of time on Bush rants back when Bush was in office. Class was clear and to the point as long as you have half a mind to pay attention. Essays for tests which makes understanding the material easier. Very polite when you show him respect and always willing to help out cause he doesn't want to see anyone stuggle.
At first it seemed like he just wanted to sit there and lecture but if you take the time to ask questions you can have some great discussions. He definitely can't help himself with the Bush/Cheney rants. He can actually be pretty funny. I really enjoyed the class. The more you get the class involved in the discussion the better your experience.
I was intimidated by the comments of other students. The class isn't super easy but if you take good notes and go to every class you will be an A. He doesn't like students leaving in the middle of the class. He is nice and sometimes can be funny. Old school teacher though.
At first you think it will be boring and it can be. But you must pay attention. I needed coffee to stay awake but there were times when the conversation/lecture got interesting. You must go to every class because all exams are based on the notes you take. You learn something out of the class and he is funny sometimes. Very old school teacher.
Sir David is an amazing professor! He loves Philosophy and likes to discuss philosophers like Kant, Satre, and Nietzshe which other professors tend to overlook. MUST take notes in his class, pay attention, ask questions if confused, READ the pages he assigns, and remember. He also offers Extra Credit. I'm taking him for the 2nd time now.
Not bad. Show up, do your work, get an A. Grade is based on attendance, participation, and a final. The final is basically just translating a few pages from the book. He does assign a lot of homework, but he doesn't actually check it.
He's nice, but he's not a teacher I wouldn't ever recommend. Our final consisted of 3 separate essays on topics, (one of which he was expecting us to write on his views of the writing.) and then told us that we had to write it up in class in three hours with no source, that and half the lecture is him ranting about modern society.
Professor Brown is a really good teacher. He is serious about his subjects and helping students to understand. His class is not easy but keep up in the reading and pay attention and you should be fine. BTW, his texts/exams are essays so learn the information. He is interesting but you have to give him a chance.
Dr. Brown's exams were to be answered in essay format. Class participation, note taking, and reading the material is vital for your desired grade. He is definitely thorough with his explanations of the text and demonstrates using multiple examples to clarify all questions.
I have taken him for Latin 101 and 201, both B's. I plan to take 202, but I am unsure of what it takes to get an A in his class. He doesn't use math as far as I know. Attendance is required. Finals are simple but require good preparation. If anyone knows how to get an A in his Latin class please enlightenment me.
Professor Brown is an excellent teacher, who knows his topics of instruction. His class is challenging but he provides a lot of clarification to help students understand. He is patient and is willing to explain what someone might not understand clearly. He encourages questions and it helps that there is voluntary class participation.
I came in with already some prior philosophical training but quickly found out Dr. Brown is no intellectual lightweight. His class gave my own studies and writing fresh perspectives? new challenges, and insights. The depth and range of study in philosophy is truly bottomless. If requested he can tailor a specific course for greater challenge.
Dr. Brown is by far the best professor I have had at college. I've moved on from NVCC now but I've yet to come across a better professor than Dr. Brown. Class is a challenge, but in a good way. If you're a typically college slacker he's not for you, you have to be engaged in this class. I'd be surprised if I find a professor as great as he is.
Professor Brown is my favorite professor at NOVA so far. He's extremely clear, intelligent, and funny. Had to do quite a bit of writing for his tests, but as long as you convince him that you made a worthy effort, he'll take care of you. I took him for a 6week summer session and I regret it. Wish I could've had the class for an entire semester.
Lecture is fine - writes the notes incompletely so you will listen. Tests are not difficult. He will often go off on tangents giving his unsolicited opinion on polarizing political issues claiming it has to do with the class. He has no control over the class and says nothing about rampant chatter during lecture. Not a serious learning environment.
Philosophy is hard. he is not bad at explaining, but must be awake and alert to fully understand. build a good relationship with him and send in essays before due date, and he will review it and edit with you. strongly recommended.
He is a great teacher. But essays were not easy. You have to try your hardest in connecting two things that don't make sense at all. Just be in class and PAY attention
Dr. Brown teaches at a university level and philosophy is not easy. Wonderful professor. You'll learn a lot in his class. Taking good notes will help you with essays. Don't skip class. Good sense of humor and genuinely wants you to succeed. Although not necessary, an english composition class will really help you succeed in this course.
Brown is a good philosophy teacher, but you really need to be there for lecture. He'll often go off on tangents about happenings around the world, but he admits he's a little off at times. It's actually more hilarious than anything, but regardless he gets the teaching done. Reading optional, but he gives ec on tests if you reference book materials.
He was good at explaining topics. Not an easy class if writing essays are not your best suit but he is a good teacher. If you read the readings ahead of class you'll be good.
He is an inspiring professor who makes you think and question everything. I learned a lot. He tries his best to teach well, and he does. Tests are in class essays. It's really important to follow along with him and understand what he's talking about- ask him questions if you don't!
Be careful when choosing to take a class with Professor Brown. He's not a tech person so he will not upload anything (including grades) on Blackboard. If you skip class, you'll seriously be screwed. Be prepared to take exceptionally detailed notes and be able to regurgitate it during in-class essays and take home essays. NOT an easy class.
If you really need to take this class and have no other options on a different teacher then take him, if not think again. This class is like another English class, constantly reading and write essays. You have a total of 6 essays, 3 in class and 3 out of class he's a tough grader really don't give a criteria for what he wants in his papers.
If you aren't good at writing essays then don't take this class and blame the professor. If you don't mind writing a bit then he's a great professor, explains things well, and is clear about what he wants on papers. If unsure please ask he's happy to elaborate. Class discussions were hilarious in my opinion, had a great time and learned some.
He is hard to understand, and talks really fast. He requires the book and lots of out of class reading. He grades tough and doesn't have clear guidelines for how he grades.
Took a condensed course with Prof Brown. Super nice, very funny, very fair. You need the book to pass, but lectures are worth listening to (though sometimes w/ odd conspiracies). Be ready for lots of Cheney jokes. Exams are comprehensive and in essay form. Attendance is of *paramount* importance.
This Proefessor is honestly horrible. He talks a lot to the point where you dont understand anything. I took him for a religion class & he would always put in his political view when giving lectures. He would talk about how bad America politicians are & how messed up our military is. His tests were all in class essays & they were not easy.
Philosophy is a difficult subject to understand but Professor Brown does not make it easy. He was not very accessible for extra help I had rely online help to pass the course. If you have to take this class please consider a different professor. For some students this course maybe easy for most people who are not majoring philosophy it is not.
Horrific teacher. Bad are explaining anything and even worse at answering questions.
The most delusional professor Ive ever had. You won't understand what he's saying 99 % of the time and I doubt even the professor knows. All the students are dumbfounded throughout the whole class period. There is 3 long essay exams. Good luck studying for it.
Speaks very quickly, hard to understand. Does not post grades until the end of class. Goes on random political tangents that aren't relevant to the class.
Prof is real fun, but don't ask him questions. I asked what "extension" was and he went on a 4 min rant and at the end i didnt have an answer. Google it. It's just the dimensions of an object smh. Anyways, read the book and know how to write essays and you'll be dandy. He believes 9/11 was an inside job, but like, that's the spice of life, y'know?
Save yourself and literally take anyone else if you are required to take this course.
Great teacher! Lots of reading, but that's what you have to do in Philosophy anyways. Gives good feedback. Definitely recommend him. I took 3 six week classes including his, it was stressful but that's a 6 week class for you. Lectures are long, take notes! Ask questions. He helps a lot. Make sure you know how to write an essay.
Took a 6 week class over summer. Philosophy is not my strength, so I found the course rather hard. He knows his subject extremely well. I thought he was both funny and confusing at times. I want to say he is a tough grader, but his class is definitely doable.
Absolute trash lecturer and teacher. Ask a question and he will give you a political answer that does not pertain to what you asked, unclear on the rubric, and what is asked. Definitely been teaching far too long.
Soooo boring. This is the first philosophy class I have taken and it will definitely be the last. He means well but his voice is perfect to fall asleep to. He posts the notes on canvas like this: *concept name....* *term....* Like he never finishes sentences or gives actual definitions so I'm really confused literally all the time.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. He is so old and out of touch. Goes into random tangents while lecturing to the point where it's confusing what's part of the material and what's not. DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO
I took three classes with professor brown, and I am so glad I did. I understood him and the way he lectured. Whenever he would go on rants, I would always laugh because of how funny I thought he was. He is a very interesting person, but he is also pretty caring too. Ask questions even if he goes on long tangents, it makes it more enjoyable.
Lots of reading and tough grader.
Dr. Brown conducts his class in a very traditional lecture/essay format, which I really enjoyed. His grading is fair - if you read what you're supposed to and attempt to critically think and write about it at a college level then you will do well in his class. He is very knowledgable and tries hard to coach you through tough concepts.
THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! He is SO boring and asks for 4 essays but does not give outline for essay or even what he is looking for in an essay. Goes on a tangent when you simply ask what he wants on a paper or when is the due date. AVOID TAKING THIS CLASS!! Dont take his class even if its the last resort WORST WORST WORST professor ever.
His lectures were not helpful. I have taken philosophy courses in high school and at a different college. Both were much better and commonly utilized everyday metaphors to explain difficult concept. He doesn't. He also threw out all of the work I did for an essay exam because he had 'technical difficulties'. He doesn't know how to teach over Zoom.
This was my first philosophy class and it went well. Professor brown gives you all the tools you need to do well.
David Brown isn't a flawless professor, but his lectures are solid and he knows his stuff. Actively listen during classes, take good notes, engage him in good faith, and read at least some of the text, you will be fine. Don't try to group workshop outlines of the exams and you won't get busted for cheating, it's not a free A but it's not hard.
Its really hard to do well in this class. The notes are hard to follow and when it comes down to the couple of essays he gives its extremely difficult to do well. I followed an outline exactly how it was formatted and he gave me an F for missing information that was never provided on the outline. Alot of his lectures don't make sense.
Many people struggled with his class, but I honestly think it was easy as long as you paid attention to his lectures. I wrote down what he said and used that for my essays. He answers my questions and responds to email quickly.
