Gives good notes, and sometimes you don't have to read the textbook.
I learned a lot form his lecture. Even though he knew I was not from his class, he helped me a lot in my difficulties in Chemistry. He is a really good and nice professor.
good teacher but tests are difficult
He is the best Chem teacher I've had at st. John's! He makes himself very clear and is definitely helpful if you have questions. His tests are a bit challenging but if you take notes and read and all that you should be ok.
the wrost teacher ever! he dictates out of the damn book.i teach the material to myself.no point in going to class.he doesnt explain anything... jsut hadns out the ntoes and there test! his tests are stupid b/c it doesnt correspond to what he does in clas
OMG DO NOT be fooled! He is so not easy, what the hell r these losers saying? I'm taking him now with some really smart people in the class getting less than B averages please...the tests r mad hard, no notes prepare u cuz their from the book wata was
hey guys! honestly if u r the kinda of person who wants to understand in class then don't take him.. coz taking notes in class take up all the time. if u just wanna take notes then he is good for you..enjoy
Smart guy but lectures are boring and you need to really understand the material to get an A in his class. Tests are HARD
his notes arent good. they just come out of the textbook. u'll write about 7 pgs of notes for each lecture. his lectures are poiintless. ur better off switching or teaching the material to urself. and his tests are crazy hard.
very hard tests....takes it from the notes he writes in class...but still very tricky...huge curve at the end so overall hes worth taking....if u do reasonable on the tests like low 80s...u get an A in the class
I actually looked foward to attending Dr. Brown's classes - his personality makes the material a bit easier to pay attention to, which is IMPORTANT! He gives great examples and reinforces the important point well. Tests may be hard but it's from notes.
a lot of notes. hard tests. big curve. there are goods and bads about this guy, they even out.
he's an excellent professor, explains well and tests are directly from the notes. no he's not easy, but he makes the material understandable. its definitely possible to get an A in the class you just have to work a little
what a joke!
the A is doable if you took his class over again...
his tests are so hard
Love You Dr. Brown.. I hated Chemistry till I was in your class!!!!!!!!!!
this man is an absolute sweetheart. you can tell he cares. if you study his notes, there should be no reason why anyone shouldnt get an A in his class. if you dont understand it, JUST ASK!
Dr. Brown made the class very interesting and I can easily say that he taught so well and I wasnt lost at all the semester. I got some of the highest grades in his class when i basically just past che 1 and 11. Love you Dr. B!!!!
For all you retards out there just because you cant get an A doesnt meant the teacher sucks! Yes Chemistry is hard but Dr. Brown he's an awesome teacher. He can only do as much as teach you the basics the rest is up to you. His rating maybe low but he truly is great! Take him at all costs!
Dr. Brown is a GREAT teacher - he's one of the few that actually cares about you and your grade, he clarifies things by giving you little hints and challenges you so that you learn the material - thanks dr. B = )
I had dr. brown for 2 semesters of chem and he was even my recitation teacher this semes. He has grown on me.. at first i thought he was a hard teacher but once u get used to how he teaches and tests ull be fine -- u have to study.. and he also gives a huge curve at the end to help u out.
Had, Dr. Brown for organic recitation...decent professor gave us alot of open book quizes since some of the classes were behind compared to his class...but quizzes were a little harsh but went over them before we took them..gave a nice curve at the end!! DECENT PROFESSOR, better than SARRA TAKE HIM!
very good teacher. he gives alot of notes and he is a very nice guy. tests were not bad. Thumbs up!!
He is a smart professor and explains the important parts of the chapters with clarity, he's helpful also...but then on the exam he tests us on things totally the opposite, that he barely talked about. i see that as kind of two-faced
This professor rocks!! Not only does he know his material, he is a very compassionate and caring man. If you go to him and ask for help he will help you. By all means take him and you will learn something.
Make no mistake - Brown is not an easy teacher. But there are no surprises on his tests and he is probably the best teacher in the department. The key to his class is reading the textbook. If you don't read it you will fail. He always gives you amazing powerpoint notes online. Hes always helpin
very helpful, but you also have to do a lot of work on your own. you NEED to read the textbook to do well. don't just rely on his notes alone...
I can't be too harsh on his rating because he IS a good professor, but his exams are by the far the hardest in the entire department. The class average on most exams was 60-65.
his exams are really HARD. i hope he still curves the class. he is really passionate but if he sees u just wanna leech on him, he wont help u. he is always there if u need him. however, sometimes what he tells or hints at u what may be on the exam, is not actually in the exam.
he is boring. he doesnt explain well, so u need to know the stuff before the classes. u need to read and study ahead classes. he is okay teacher.
HOLY CRAP HIS EXAMS ARE HARD. BUT HES VERY CARING AND WILL HELP YOU. I DONT KNWO WHICH CHEM TEACHER TO TAKE. THERE ALL THE SAME AND THE GRADES USUALLY EVENS OUT IN THE END.
HUGE curve...amazing teacher...it will all work out in the end and you wil actually know general/organic chem.
tests are hard..but theres a curve at the end so every1 comes out smiling..i promise..and u cant be a dumbass and expect a good grade..sorry puckers..
He is an extremely smart man and is better with organic as that is his speciality. To do well on his tests require non-stop studying because they are hard and require you to think instead of memorizing facts from the textbook. He does give a very nice curve at the end though.
Awesome man.. you have to study and you will do well.. awesome curve.. brown is a good teacher if you pay attention
hes hard, but hes fair. the curve is beautiful, and hes really a nice guy. he seems to LOVe what he does, even if everyone else is falling asleep while he lectures on the titration curve. be prepared to study like crazy though. he's more concept and theory oriented, while sarra is more reaction oriented.
u have to study a lot for his class. his exams are so hard and not a lot of ppl get 90+ on his exams. but he does give an amazing curve! his slides are helpful and he explains everything in class so pay attention. he gives extra help too so if u have questions go ask him.
I LOVE BROWN!! i think he is the only chem professor who actually knows how to leacture. he really loves chemistry and you can really tell by the way he teaches. make sure you go to lecture because when you are reading the text, it will make 100 times more sense.
Definetely NOT an easy professor. Tests are hard and there are no curves but there is a BIG curve in the end. I had a C- average in the class but walked out with an A-. Had to work my ass off in lab and recitation but I was psyched when I got my final grade! Take him. So you'll suffer a little at first - it'll all be worth it. TRUST ME!
I LOVE BROWN! he's the best chemistry teacher ever... hes smart and tries his hardest to make everything clear to you, which i think he does a very good job of (if you pay attention. TAKE HIM! He will help you at his office any time you need it. You MUST read the text book and tests are crazy hard but the curve in the end makes up for it.
he totally sucks......i dont know why i didn't drop!!!!!!!!!i mean i studied so hard....i even had ap chem in high school and was an A student till i got to his class!!!!!
wooooooooooooooooooooww do i got to say anythan
this teacher was horrible. his tests were all impossible and even the curve wont help. i went from a D to a C after his curve.
What the hell, he sucks he cant teach he thinks that we are graduate students in chemistry! u have to be insane to take him as a teacher, everyone keeps saying curves curves curves, those curves dont help on his impossible tests
dpb for life
Very clear and easy to follow in class. Knows his organic chemistry very well, good at passing on this knowledge. His tests are very straightforward, if you study you do well and if you dont study you dont do well. Take him you will learn alot and get a good grade as long as you study a little bit. He curves alot also.
don't listen to these people! Dr. Brown is probably the best chemistry teacher in the department. His tests are not impossible if you study for them. The people who complain probably didn't study enough. And his curves are great! You can't expect to go from a D to an A/B. BE REASONABLE!
he's really smart and definitely knows what he's talking about. his accent is cool. his notes are really helpful. i never read the book. just his notes. but his tests are tricky. basically, you just have to study for this class and know your organic chem. the suckup kids are annoying.
best professor..loves his job...study and ull do fine in orgo..u cant expect an easy A..ull work for it..but def doable..love the man..maddddd inspiring
no curve was given to the class i was in...orgo III so whateverur grades are..averaged..thats what ull get..period..and tough luck if u do horrible..NO CURVE so take it or lose it..work ur ass off and ull get a good grade..if not..ull do bad..simple as that
dr. brown is the best teacher in st. johns university. his powerpoint presentations are exceptional and tell you everything you have to know about the subject matter. He is great, charismatic lecturer and very helpful if you have questions. Whenever i went to his office, even if it wasnt office hours, he was there ready to answer questions.
get his tests & you'll pass with flying colors
Organic the subject itself if very hard. You have to be on top of your work. If not, tough luck passing the class. Brown is an awesome teacher! I wish he taught biochem too.. He gives a good curve at the end. So even if you are doing bad/failing in class, the final curve should help ya out a little. TAke him! definitely worth it! :)
The subject of chemistry is not easy. Brown is a fantastic teacher you mine as well have the guy who knows what hes talking about. Very helpful, friendly and approachable.

i love the man
bad professor. tests are too hard.
brown is good for those who go to lecture & do the work before class, but not for those who dont. his tests are REALLY hard. he reads from slides that are posted online so you dont really need to go to class if you keep up. but his tests are REALLY hard. for those who dont like to go to class i would suggest taking a teacher who gives easier exams.
Brown is an excellent teacher. His powerpoints are excellent and they reflect his immense effort and dedicadedness towards the students and school. If you go to lecture and study hard, you should do well. There are no "easy" professors for Orgo, so don't bother looking for any
He is very intelligent and seems dedicated, however he told the class that there would be a curve and there was no curve. I didn't like being mislead and I dont think you would. I am an A student with a 3.85 GPA and im advising you NOT to take him.
I agree with the last rater. Brown is dedicated, but he's not such a great teacher or grader. His tests are tricky and they only measure how well you can figure out tricks, not how much you know. Pick Bertini, because even though Bertini can't teach for his life, he'll curve the test. I'm an A student as well and picking Brown was a huge mistake.
to give an idea of how much he curves the grades... my avg without curve is exaclt 60 at the end, but i got a C+. the class isnt easy and exams are tricky. but professor brown has done a good job teaching the course, recommended.
if you study hard and do all the suggested problems, you can get an A with the curve - if you respect him, he will respect you; if you don't respect him, he will STILL respect you as a good prof ought to do; he can help you during office hrs; tests are hard yes, but do all the problems b/c they will really help you out
If there were more teachers and people like Prof. Brown, the world would be a better place!!!
hard material, hard tests, but you do learn a lot
great prof-awesome curve-if u normally study a decent amount ur def gonna get at least a B (before the curve) -if u study, but not alot, then ull prob get a B wit the curve-gud curve is only likely if the class as a whole listens when he talks n respects him-dont mess around in class-he is guuud and very helpful do as many textbook problems as u ca
had him for general and organic...greatest prof...knows his stuff...you can actually learn chemistry if you take him!! best chem professor in sju!! if you dont take him, your just being dumb...especially for ORGANIC!!!
for the comment below, brown is like the ONLY ORGO CHEM teacher in sju haha, the best I don't think so...theres also Dr. Sarra but he's another story...but overall he's hard but he is helpful and teaches WAY better than Sarra...take him if u dunt wanna fail!!!
just go 2 class and read his notes, forget about the book, just use it for the problems, take his recitation class if u can, his tests problems are similar to those given in recitation. he's a good teacher and gives a great curve
He's really nice and tries to be helpful if you want to get an A go to his lectures, study his notes, and do the practice problems. If you listen carefully in his class a lot of what he says is on the test. Take BROWN over SARRA. Brown is a better orgo teacher because he actually cares and he actually teaches. Gives a good curve!!!!
Dr. Brown is THE BEST.Especially for organic. He makes sure that everyone understands what he is teaching. Just go to his lectures and do the practice problems and you will get a good grade. He is very caring professor, who always helps his students. He made me like organic chemistry, beucause he actually knows how to teach it.
Dr. Brown is the best Organic Chem Professor! Just go to class, study the book and his power points and you will do great! His tests aren't easy but if yuo work hard and take advantage of his willingness to help u have nothing to worry about
like everyone said, dr. B is the best for 2nd semester organic. very organized and the slides are very informative. here's a tip: print out the slides and take notes on the slides as you follow along. when you study for exams do all the previous year exams as well as txtbk problems. i learned a lot from dr. B and so will you if you pay attention!
Definitly NOT EASY. I feel like i couldve written a novel on the material, yet still ended up with a c- test average. Between REC and lab and the final and the curve, i came out with an A-. He will sit down with you and walk you through stuff, very helpful and nice. Im taking him again for Orgo. Requires you to work, but thats what college is about
Very enthusiastic about chemistry. This is definitely not an easy class and the material is difficult to understand but he does a good job of explaining it. If u read the textbook, take notes, and do the online homework and practice exams, you will do well.
Very cool. Gotta study though obviously because can't expect to not study and get a good grade. Very serious about his work which really helps to motivate students. Choose him over serra
the material is difficult to begin with and he is an amazing teacher, breaks everything down and his slides are great. Very dedicated and passionate about the subject, has office hours, gives an extra credit assignment, and CURVES! you cant get anything better for such a challenging subject. TAKE OVER SARRA.
If u want to study orgo..take him over any other professor..he's way better than Sarra..he knows what he is doing..gives a curve..definitely recommended.
Dr. Brown is a wonderful professor. He is extremely helpful to those students who show an interest in their work and their grade. I am taking he again for Chem 1130 and I would recommend him to any.
Best Professor <3333 He is understanding and cares about his students unlike other professors. You learn a lot from this prof. His exams are straight foward if you study. You should definitely take him.
Brown is an extremely decent guy, he does his his best to teach us pharmacy kids...the problem is that orgo chem is a very hard subject to grasp at first, so u have to start reading from the beginning, and cramming can only help u so much. I saw sarra for the 1st time when i took the final, thank God i went with brown. 2 tests, one final. Good guy
he has a lovable aura to his personality. organic chem is never meant to be easy, and i admire him for taking on such a difficult course to teach. two exams and one cumulative final. go to class and listen to him, but also keep up with the chapters. may be overwhelming at times, but it helps to know what's going to be taught in each lecture.
Amazing teacher. Dedicated, helpful. Understanding of what students are going through. Will answer questions in classes. Opposite to other reviews, he will take the time to go over material with you, and does answer most questions in class. People seem to be relying on a curve, though. Get older tests, will help. Dr. Brown all the way!
the best prof for me at st. John's that ive had.....motivates you to do well and his extremely nice and helpful
Intelligent and Articulate. Sit up front in class!
i cant believe that ppl are praising this man. sure hes nice. but wait till u see his exams. 3/4 of the ppl failed the first test and many ppl still bombed the second one. i have 5 words to describe this man: GPA DROPPER!!! DO NOT TAKE
GREAT CHEM PROFESSOR. Doesnt just dictate powerpoint slides...very enthusiastic
Hes a great teacher. But the tests are not that difficult that you fail the tests. Only the brain dead incompetent failed his test's to be honest. The same ones who wouldn't show up to class if you paid them to because it's too "boring". Honestly this is college, not some mickey high school class. People complaining need to start taking college ser
Before coming in, I loved chemistry. Now I hate it with a passion. There are easier professors for orgo. This guy gives the hardest exams in the entire department FYI for all u suckups that think hes good. I used to be an A student in chem and now currently i have a C- test average because of him. Stay away unless u want to be bored/ get a 50s
OK im not gona insult brown. plz take sarra. every1 who took brown think dey faild da final + da class. ppl who got sarra dis semestr think dey all passd the final + class w/B's but ppl who had brown think dey r lucky 2 even get passing grades. take sarra nxt term for che/orgo 3 if u can. be warnd: brown is really hard. he makes exams impossible!!!
Brown isnt as bad as everyone is saying. He provides everyone with everything he can for them to succeed including prior tests and even prior final exams and he is always available outside of class. i dnt think i Aced the class but i didn fail either. However, ppl did get 100's and 90's on his tests so they arent impossible
this professor makes tests a lot harder than they need to be. you WILL fail. avoid him at all costs. take sarra. you will not regret it.
Great prof, great semester! Thanks Dr. Brown!!!
Helpful and clear. Always open for office hours. If you don't understand, he will explain it to you. You must do your part and study. If you don't ready the material until the last day then you will fail but it's your fault. Relatively easy. Exams are 25 MC questions. Does not try to trick you; wants you to understand material.
Two of the tests were impossibly hard and one was not bad. Half the time I thought I had gotten a 2 on the test I ended up with a pretty decent grade. Also, the curve at the end of the semester is amazing
Not an easy class but Prof. Brown does his best to help you understand the material. Go to his office hours if you need help. Read the textbook and ask questions in lecture. Do not rely simply on his notes for exams. Overall, very approachable man.
I dont know what curve he puts on the grades but im pretty sure i failed the final and with an 88 average backing me up, i got an A...go figure
Easy F!!! Tips: Read all the bks and notes three times and memorize. PSYCHE. even if u do all these things you wont get above a 60 on his tests. I had to drop out and switch my major because of him and I also know people who did the same. If u want to commit GPA Suicide, this man is for you
The material is hard so the class will be hard no matter what teacher you take. Honestly all orgo teachers are pretty good- brown, sara, graham, and caesar. but they all have different teaching styles. brown's tests are harder than the others' but he curves
Professor Brown is a very nice and helpful professor. His powerpoints are extremely helpful BUT if you do not attend class there is no way you will learn the material PERIOD! The combination of the class and the notes help you understand the material. He just wants to make sure you understand the material which is VERY important
Prof. Brown is a good man and a good teacher. He gives you the tools to succeed in orgo. Still, this class is going to be tough. Read the hints on the syllabus and you should pass.
Challenging class. READ THE TEXTBOOK in addition to the powerpoints. You have to attend class in order to understand what's happening. Brown is very helpful as well so go to his office hours if you need help. 2 tests and a final. Tests are challenging but he gives a curve at the end. The class requires committment.
i swear i heart this man. he really knows his stuff. you definitely will learn lots from him. alright, its a little challenging but it's orgo--what do you honestly expect? take notes in class--helps clarify whatevers in the textbook. plus, he curves :]
I recommend you go to class but you absolutely have to read the textbook. its a hard class and none of the tests get dropped so you don't want to screw up on any of them.
great professor. listen to his lectures. test have some tricky questions. if u do poorly it is entirely your fault. appreciate his genius and his snazzy sense of humor.
Dr. Brown is great. He goes over everything very carefully and slowly so that everyone will understand. My favorite parts of the course were when he paused the lecture to tell us how o-chem applied to life. If you read the text before the material is covered in class, you are set, trust me.
Dr. Brown DOES NOT curve, my average was a B in the class, and I ended with a B. Whoever says he curves is lying.
He's okay...it's just the subject..tests are tricky, you think you did okay, but it always turned out the opposite way
If you attend class, and actually stay awake you might learn something, he makes chemistry sound pretty interesting, but the tests are horrible, dont expect high grades on average, but he curves at least a half grade on the final grade so its okay
He's a nice guy. The tests are SUPER hard, like honestly if you think you're prepared, you're not prepared enough. And there was definitely no curve at the end so don't be dependent on it. What you get is pretty much going to be what you get so do all your work and dedicate a LOT of time to chemistry!
This guy really loves his job. He only cares about helping the student. He is a good teacher the subject is hard though. Since when is orgo easy? He teaches well but make sure you read before and after classes and be aware of some trick Q's on his exam. Overall Good Guy
He's alright. His slides are very helpful for tests since I get too lazy to read the whole book. Tests are a bit tricky since he gives possible miscalculations as choices. I learned a lot just by paying attention since I don't read often.
His tests are tricky but chemistry, in general, is a hard a tricky subject. He is better than the other chemistry teachers so take him.
Chemistry is a very hard class, so taking that into consideration, he's not bad. He's better than other professors. His tests aren't unnecessarily difficult, and he curves the final grade at least a half letter grade. Just be prepared to go to lecture, b/c there are clicker questions every class that go towards your grade, and count as attendance.
had graham and brown, would choose brown over graham ANYDAy Although they're both difficult, orgo is a difficult subject. at least brown cares about his students. He does everything he can to help, people say he just teaches from his slides, thats untrue... he does problems and they're usually harder than what you'd see on the tests. take him
I had Brown for both Chem 2 and Chem 3. Everyone talked about his generous curve but he didn't curve at all during Chem2. He curved A LOT for Chem 3(during summer). Just don't depend on it. It'd hard as is. You really need to know your stuff in and out for him. He's a nice guy he'll teach you well.
He is the greatest orgo teacher alive. He's extremely helpful and knows what he is talking about. Although it might be a hard subject, he teaches it well. He should get a raise.
Dr Brown is AMAZING! I absolutely love him! he is an amazing professor and really helpful. Orgo is a hard subject as it is, but he is one of the nicest professors i've ever had and he grades extremely fair! Read the textbook and know your stuff, because otherwise youre screwed. Dr Brown tries to help as much as he can, GO TO OFFICE HOURS!
Hes a good professor. He practices with you alot and he keeps giving you questions over and over to make it stick. He kind fair and might help you out in the end if you need it. Go to his office hours hes very helpful and very very patient with everyone. Must take
Dr. Brown is the man! This guy is different from the other profs. He's the nicest guy. He won't allow you to slip in his class. After failing the first test, I met with him, and he helped me out a lot. Just an overall great guy.
He's a really good teacher. I admire how he can be so interested in his field of work and is super smart. He's very willing to help, if you're willing to ask. His tests are super hard, but he'll help you if you ask and his curve at the end, AMAZING.
Amazing teacher period.
Dr. Brown is amazing. You MUST study if you want to do well. Do not rely on curves, but do the work and you will get high grades. Explains everything well, office hours are available, really smart and loves CHEMISTRY..
Attend lecture, pay attention and keep up with reading/practice problems. Key to orgo is practicing problems. Practice exams, clicker questions and book problems is best way to study for exams. There is a pretty decent curve but don't rely on it.
I LOVE THIS MAN! Honestly his tests are not as bad as everyone says. He's really helpful (responds to emails, always in office, goes over any questions thoroughly). Honestly best professor I have has at SJU so far. I'm expecting an A; deff take him!
Pros- Good teacher. Class is humorous at times. Clicker questions keep you focused. Cons- Have you ever studied 20 hours for a test just to barely pass or barely fail. Welcome to Brown's Town. Class avg is low and the tests are exceedingly difficult. Take him if you want to learn. Don't take him if you want a good grade.
He's really helpful and his exams may be tricky but if you study and work hard, you can get an A.
Best Gen/Orgo teacher offered.he knows/explains everything, nd is the one who makes the actual slides.doesnt give the easiest tests however. thus what i did once is take his elctures while taking other professor's class to get easier tests while getting better lectures.in this class, u still need to study textbook nd understand chemistry fully.
LOVE HIM .. he's the best professor i've ever had. Orgo isnt an easy topic but he teaches it really well.. if you study and take notes youll be fine. I got an A in the class with a lot of studying but Dr. Brown is also extremely helpful and will do anything to help you understand
I LOVE THIS GUY! He's an amazing teacher that makes Organic Chemistry soo easy to understand. I will actually miss him when orgo ends, he's just amazing. Take him!!!!
HANDS DOWN best choice out of the orgo teachers. His lectures are extremely helpful in understanding the material and he goes out of his way to make sure you understand everything. Don't be turned away by people saying he is difficult. As long as you pay attention in class and study his slides along with textbook problems, you will be FINE.
This man knows orgo so well its scary. he knows his subject matter better than any other teacher ive had before. consequently, the exams are very difficult but not as impossible as everyone else says they are. orgo is hard and requires a lot of work, so u really need to study to do well. if you can get 80+ test avg in class, u should get an A.
got into his class last semester of chem and i gotta say i understood chemsitry thanks to him and only him guy is amazing cares about his students and after failing an exam he will tell you to come see him rather than you having to ask to go see him trys every way to her must take all professors should be like him
OMG I LOVE THIS GUY! HE MAKES CHEMISTRY SOOOO DUE ABLE! hes like my life saver!! and he wants you to pass, so he will help you! hes a must! take him
Great teacher. Best chem professor at St. Johns. Recommend highly. His tests aren't easy but he prepares you very well. Such a funny and sweet man and he is always available for help
Best professor. Fair grader. Final overall grade is curved. Be sure to study for the tests or else you will fail the course. Better than the other professors. Will go out of his way to teach you if you don't understand. Will explain thoroughly. I highly recommend him!!!
The best! He is a must take for Chem3 because he is a genius in orgo. Makes class very interesting and is crystal clear in explaining concepts. No need to read the book if you go to class. His tests are not hard at all if you pay attention in class and study a fair amount. One of the nicest and most helpful professors out there. Favorite so far!
Dr. Brown is hands down the BEST chemistry prof on campus! he not only makes it clear hes so helpful and so sweet!! i had him 1120 & 1130 and man do i miss him! made chem so understandable and was always available for extra help. i absolutly recommend dr.brown! powerpoints are all u need for him. great sense of humor =D
Dr. Brown is the BEST! Teaching style is GENIUS, so clear and concise. He is the encyclopedia of chem and is patient and will help you understand everything. Covers material extremely fast. Tests are tricky but getting multiple 100's in a single semester is possible if not, getting an A is definitely attainable. A must take for PharmD students.
Took him for recitation over the summer and he is just pure awesome! I don't see how anyone can hate this guy. Quizzes are difficult, but all quizzes are open book and group work. If you have trouble, ask him! Always there to help you out and very clear! A must take. You will learn a lot from this man. I would also recommend him for lecture.
Awesome dude! I had him for recitation and he was great! He helped us do the recitation problems and we had time left over to go home. It is open book and we are allowed to talk with our group as well as other groups! It's great. Easy Recitation class! You learn a lot also! He is really helpful for all of us. We all get high grades!
The best of the best. Teaches well, dresses well and as is well. TAKE HIMMMM.
Professor Brown COMPLETELY changed my outlook on chemistry.I never enjoyed it before, but I actually enjoyed orgo somewhat and although not easy, it was manageable. He explains concepts perfectly and gives great examples.TAKE HIM!
Brown is a very good orgo professor! His tests are hard, but if you study, and listen in class they are easily manageable. He is very kind and friendly will help students in any way possible. A must take for orgo, plus he curves :)
Must take for any chemistry class. He is super helpful, and he explains the complicated concepts very well. He also provides a lot of examples during class to reinforce the concepts. He encourages his students to do well and really cares. He curves at the end!
Best chem professor I've ever had. Explained concepts REALLY well and wants you to not only pass but do well! Learned a lot in this class. You still have to do work and study but he makes it easier to understand and follow. I would recommend taking him.
Take this professor. He makes the concepts very clear. Test are tricky but there is a curve, but not as big as you think. Always available during office hours.
He's pretty good for organic chem as he will explain the mechanism through numerous examples for practice. however, most of the mechanisms are pretty similar except for some. Tests are tricky but manageable.
Dr. Brown is a great professor. He's really into what he teaches and is there for students. Pay attention in lecture. He usually says what mechanisms willwill not be on exam. Multiple choice some short answer. 2 exams and final.
good professor. although 1-2 questions were ehh, the exams were pretty easy in my opinion as they were based on what he taught, recitation and lots and lots of practice. however, the mechanisms (some were really to remember in your mind) were similar when the question asked for the mechanism's products w some minor exceptions. very good teacher.
Dr. Brown turns the oh-so-feared class of Organic Chemistry into a straightforward and manageable course. He does curve at the end (A LOT) but you still need to pay attention during the lecture if you want to have any hopes of passing the tests, which aren't easy. He also counts recitation packets towards your grade. Highly recommend.
He's the freaking man
Hands down the best professor Ive ever had. You would be dumb not to take him. He makes Orgo so clear and although tests may be difficult(what orgo test isnt) he makes it possible to do well! Hands down the best professor at SJU. He cares alot about his students and he does curve get 80s in the class and an A is possible.
Brown is an amazing professor! He explains the material really well. Of course, like any organic chem class its not gonna be easy work but if you take notes and study, you'll do well. He also curves at the end of the semester which def helps!!
If you have the opportunity to take Dr. Brown please do. He is an amazing professor and completely changed my view on organic chemistry. I ended up loving Orgo so much, easier than gen chem in my opinion. You do have to study and put in work in his class but he is one of the best professors I have ever had. I would take his class all over again!
He explained everything step by step . I like his class and his way. I recommended him to anyone needs to understand Advanced organic course. He is the best organic Professor in my life.
Dr. Brown is an amazing professor! He made Organic Chemistry hands down one of my favorite subjects. His class not gonna lie is tough and you will need to practice a lot. In addition, there are only two exams and a final so you need to be on top of things. With that being said, he is a fair grader and is willing to help if you seek it out!
Highly overhyped. I was excited to get the opportunity to learn from Professor Brown due to his outstanding reviews in person and on here. However, he is somewhat condescending, assumes everyone understands his material, and laughs at kids not being right. Also he told us his students averaged 85% on tests, our three tests resulted 80%, 67%, 50%
Professor Brown knows his chemistry but I did not like his class. He breezed and rushed over the entire course material. We were the first one's done with the class lectures but since he rushed through it ppl were lost. His reviews @ the end of the semester are a LOT better than his teaching. Be sure to read textbook b4 coming to lectures.
I have just finished taking Orgo II and honestly I've learned so much material taking Dr. Brown. The thing about Dr. Brown's class is that he teaches you a lot about the "why" for reactions and other properties. I often hear people saying "Orgo is memorization" when if you understand these "why"s you can manage to work plenty of reactions out.
Dr. Brown is the best Chemistry teacher in all of St. John's, simple as that. Orgo Chem is hard but Dr. Brown fills his lectures with tons of examples and practice questions that it's hard for anyone to get confused. He's calm, clear and precise. There's a reason why his classes have the highest test scores.
Dr. Brown is truly an amazing professor. People need to understand that orgo is not easy, YOU HAVE TO PUT IN THE TIME TO DO WELL (this isn't gen chem). Dr. Brown is very clear when explaining material & will always stop to answer any questions. Gives sample exams and lots of questions to practice from. I highly recommend taking notes before class.
Dr. Brown took one of the most difficult and boring subjects and made it in a great experience for the year. OChem 1 and 2 made me very invested in my learning and reinforced my belief that the Chemistry department of St. John's is the best on campus. Class was a lot of work, very manageable but definitely need to apply oneself.
Dr. Brown is a phenomenal organic chemistry professor. I took him over the summer and although the class had a lot of information, he made sure he took his time so that we understood the concepts and how to apply to it different situations. He's one of the best because he focuses more on helping students understand organic chem.
Dr. Brown is such a good professor. He truly cares for his students, but he also makes you put the work in. He will work with you to get the best grade you can as long as you are willing to attend recitation, do the homework, and show you are trying. I definitely learned alot in his class and would recommend taking him if you want to learn orgo.
Honestly the best orgo professor you would find. Dr. Brown expects you to review orgo constantly throughout the two semester of orgo because everything is interconnected in one way or the other. He gives two test and a final. It is minimally curved. Tests are fair, but you must study! There are clicker questions during class and online homework.
I cannot recommend this class more take it take it take it, literally the best teacher I've ever gotten to deal with. he makes time for his students and really cares about if you pass or fail. by the end of the course it feels like your class is a family and I loved it.
Brown is the cutest! He has an eccentric accent and a somewhat cocky but hilarious personality. He's super enthusiastic about chem so he goes really in depth and tells you more than you need to know for the exams (which gets confusing and overwhelming at times). He's always happy to help after class or during office hours so take advantage of that!
HE is always willing to help and shows a lot of enthusiasm for chemistry. Obviously you have to put in a lot of work but he will really help you if you go to his office hours.
really passionate about chem and pretty good at explaining during lectures. really helpful to go to office hours so go if you dont understand something. highly recommended, would take again.
He is nice but I didn't much of a good vibe from him as a professor. I came in to learn about organic chemistry but I felt as if his classes were somewhat rushed. I tried to learn from him and reviewed my notes and did practice problems in order to understand the mechanisms and all but I felt as if some of my questions will remain unanswered.
He is a great professor. His lectures are very detailed and he answers all your questions. He shows us every concept in detail. Study the powerpoints and take good notes. He tells you what is important to know. His class is fun and you do learn a lot if you pay attention.
Orgo is not an easy subject, but Dr. Brown understands that and wants to see you succeed! Exams are fair but you have to know your stuff, like any other orgo class. The difference between him and regular is he actually cares about how you do. Go to him and talk if you don't like your grade, he's there to help!
He understands how hard orgo is and went out of his way to make sure we were okay with the material. You'll have to put in a good amount of work, but if you try and he sees that, you'll do well. Not only a good teacher, but just a good man. If you have the opportunity, don't pass it up.
Dr. Brown is my Chem II and Orgo professor this semester and to say the least, he is amazing. His lectures are extremely in-depth and if you ever have a question, he thoroughly explains the answer. He makes lecture fun to be in. The only thing is that the tests are a little hard -- however, this is basically the case in any Chemistry course.
Although I'm doing well in his class, what I don't like is that he assumes you to know the mechanism. I had to go to tutoring center to up my grade as office hours are filled up a lot. Maybe it could be my time inconsistencies also but I really don't get the hype. The exams were bearable because the tutors helped. I self-studied more from the book.
hes really sweet and a genuine guy but the course is difficult. with that being said, its advanced organic chemistry so its obviously going to be difficult, but i feel as if the course was super accelerated and tough. some of the tests almost seemed impossible to get above a 60-70. hes always available to help but be ready to study 24/7.
This course is pretty challenging, however Dr. Brown really knows his stuff. Also, he kinda curves your final grade, so make sure you're on his good side.
Dr. Brown is a great professor. Given organic chemistry is a difficult course and requires a lot out of classroom work. If you're trying to learn the material Dr. Brown is a great and understanding professor to have.
Dr. Brown is the best chemistry professor I have had. I had him for Gen Chem 2 and Orgo because he is an excellent teacher. Although he goes fast, he is always happy to answer questions. He truly cares about his students and wants them all to pass.
Best organic and chem professor out there. He's literally the best at explaining everything and just wow. He really knows what he's talking about and he's really funny and really smart. Take this guy for sure! But make sure you pay attention very single minute of this very long class then only it will be beneficial!
Professor Brown is really good. He explains org chem very well and makes things simpler. The only thing was he kinda rushed when covering the material to be at the same pace as the other sections. Org chem was really hard for me but he made it a little easier. His powerpoints are really helpful and it was also really helpful to record. TAKE HIMM!!!
a pretty solid prof. his lectures are recorded and he was pretty accessible if you asked him questions. his tests are all multiple choice. he tries to be a fun teacher, which is appreciated. his homework is all due at the end of the semester, so you can cram it all at the end
You already know chem is hard. Brown is the best of the lot. The grade is based heavily on the exams so do well in the first two. THE FINAL IS CUMULATIVE. Dr Brown is really good at chem esp. reactions. Super-accessible by email. HW is easy to do. Make sure you find a study buddy too or make a class GC.
dr. brown is a really good orgo professor. there are 2 lecture exams and a final. you need to pass at least one exam to pass the course. the lectures are pre-recorded so you don't need to attend the webex meetings. there are 2 quizzes every week with 5 attempts. there are about 2 mastering chem assignments due every 3-4 wks. take him to pass!!!
Dr. Brown is great. Organic Chemistry is hard itself and he tries to simplify the material as simple as possible. Two exams and a final. Two weekly quizzes with 5 attempts each open book and mastering chemistry homework due once every few weeks. He has office hours and replies to emails ASAP. He is very understanding and is always available to help
Professor was very nice but exams exceeded his lecture, Sometimes his exams would cover information that we still did not cover in lecture. He was very passionate about his lectures so it was not boring to sit in class.
I guess if you're looking to get a good grade in Gen Chem II, choose him. He's passionate about the subject and offers complex explanations on the material. Sometimes he misunderstands people's questions, which makes it a little bit difficult to truly learn the subject.
Even though Dr. Brown gave us practice tests, sometimes the actual exams ended up being harder than the material that we studied. Tests and quizzes were online, but we never got to see what we got wrong. He does do a good job of teaching general chemistry II, and always answers any questions. He makes understanding the concepts easy as well.
Two quizzes a week, three exams (lowest is dropped), a midterm, and a final. he gives practice tests before the exams, sometimes he takes questions from practice and quiz and puts them in exams. Genuinely loves to teach chemistry and is always available for office hours.
Brown's a good prof. Don't skip lectures as a lot of what he says is present as conceptual questions on the exam. And please don't cheat like those idiots in Spring 2021. Really had to post a pic of exam answers on the group chat.
Best prof in orgo dept, hands down. He is so understanding and super accessible by email and office hours. Just DON'T! fall behind. If you stay relatively up to date with the lecture and do wiley, it is not hard to do well in the class.
He is very nice and understanding. Takes time to explain things in detail during lectures. There are only a few tests so you have to make sure you do well. Lots of quizzes. Some online hw. Overall not that much work compared to other chem classes. Would overall recommend this professor.
Amazing professor. Learned a lot from him - really articulate and takes his time going deeper into confusing topics. A+
He's great, especially in comparison to the other chem professors available. Explains thoroughly and answers any questions in chat. Very responsive in email or office hours. Content is hard bc it's chem but if you do practice problems, you'll be okay. Textbook is expensive and mandatory though bc the program also has the hw. Posts recordings too.
Professor Brown makes organic chem comprehensible. Classes are engaging, and he's happy to clarify tricky topics. unstuck study was a lifesaver for exam prep. Highly recommend this class.
Brown is excellent at explaining complicated concepts in detail! He is always available with office hours, and really seems to care about his students. His lectures are pre-recorded for a graduate class, but the videos are always on Canvas for you to review.
Super nice prof if you are consistent with keeping up in lectures. Always available/flexible for office hours, genuinely cares if you show you care. If you do poorly in the class, he can be a little condescending, unfortunately. Take this class with friends to work on the homework together!
Professor Brown is the kindest professor in the Chemistry Department. I highly recommend taking his course if you want a professor that will care about your grades and assist you in your education.
I had Dr. Brown for two semesters and he is the best!! Very passionate about orgo and genuinely wants his students to succeed. He makes the class bearable. Orgo can be a lot but he is always available during office hours and is more than happy to break down difficult concepts. Don't wait last minute to prepare for exams and do plenty of practice.
