nice guy...will talk through your problems
very interesting to listen to

it's like he's comparing himself to Jesus, give me a break
Absolutely the best undergrad teacher I've had; very passionate, which rubs off.
If you were making the movie...
THe quizzes are ridiculous. This is a hard class...definitely not a blow off. He is kind of interesting but also fairly pompous. If you really care about the bible and will bust ass he is good, if you just want to fill the lit req. take something else
pompous, arrogant, quizzes are as ridiculous as he is. I absolutely despised this man.
David Brumble is Excellent. He's passionate and seeks to inspire the student to see and understand the work for what it is, and what it was written for--to get in the mind of both the author and the audience. If you do the reading, the quizes are easy.

Simply put, Prof. Brumble is the man. His personality and teaching style are second to none. He has a sense of humor, and he knows how to present information in an understandable way. If you're having problems with his course, you're thinking too much.
I really really love prof brumble. this class is hard though - read the ovid very closely for quizzes. don't stress over the papers, just write clearly. his theatrics aren't actually pompous - he's just passionate.

absolutely horrible at teaching and very unfair. I was waiting for the devil to take him away any minute, he made fun of God so much!! He id definitely atheist.
He was ridiculous and all of his papers were about the bible in some way, not about the plays. So basically if you were like me and know nothing about jesus you're screwed. AVOID!
If you are new to the world of the Bible, you will feel left out of the discussions, which make up the whole of the class. Be prepared for quizzes! They are not easy. But they'll save your grade. The final is tough and long. Your hand will hurt.
He is horrendous! This was by far the worst class that I took at Pitt. He's obsessed with the bible, hard grader, & not very flexible. The class wasn't interesting & there was only got a 5 1/2 min break. I would never take him again.
Brumble is AWESOME! He really helped me with my writing so much, and he genuinely cares about EVERY student. He always brings in as much outside information as possible to help us understand the plays. Take any of his classes, you won't be dissapointed!!!
I love Brumble! He's so funny and he is so passionate about what he does. He's dying to help out in any way he can, but he grades tough.
Brumble is fantastic - when he is unsure of something, he will research it and present his findings the next class. I've never had a better professor.
Prof Brumble is one of the best professors I've had at Pitt. He has crazy idiosychrosies that make you laugh and is very willing to help you with papers and concepts talked about in class.
One of my favorite teachers at Pitt. For a 2.5 hour class, he manages to keep it interesting the whole time. I'm even taking the second level of his class now, simply because he manages to make me enjoy it.
Brumble is one of the best professors I have ever had. His style is designed to provoke independent thought and draw connections, and his passion for teaching is contagious. On the balance, he is demanding but fair. And never dull.
He whipped me into shape. He is incredible knowledgable and unforgiving. He tolerates no incompetence. He is a fantastic professor who tolerates no slacking.
Took every course I could. Shakespeare, Bible as Literature, Allegory & Iconography. Only professor I know who could turn a 300-person clas into a discussion group. Learn to relax and enjoy hs obsesion with Breughel. You'll learn more than you ever thought was possible.
so excited about his subject! and a really nice guy-thoroughly enjoyed his class, and hope to take something of his again.
Brumble is usually an interesting lecturer. He isn't an easy grader, but he will be more lenient if you take your paper to his office hours to work on it with him. He reminds me of that little man in The Princess Bride (the evil bald one with the lisp). He tends to make off-color comments.
Dr. Brumble is the best professor that I have had at this university. He is extremely knowledgable yet not condescending. He is extremely organized, yet is willing to adapt to the classes interest. I definetly recommend him.
He is a very good teacher and makes stuff interesting.
The thing I remember the most about David Brumble was that he wore tight white pants and rode his bike around campus. Kinda creepy and very UNattractive. Ew. He seemed pretty cocky, also. No joke. His class wasn't hard, though. I would not take another class with him.
I was originally a little put back by his class, but I ended up loving it. He enjoys discussing the Bible with everyone in the room and openly admits learning in the process. Contrastingly, he is a fascinating and passionate authority on the subject. Weekly quizes, no papers. Do the reading and it's simple but enjoyable.
Interesting, easy class. He up all his energy into teaching and really cared about his students. He offered help to anyone if ever they needed it, and even went out of his ways to write e-mails and comments on assignments and tests. If I could take another class with him I most certainly would.
Prof. Brumble is extremely intelligent and at times the class was alot of fun. However, being very intelligent, he is also extremely egotistic and petty. It really put me off and I don't think I would take another one of his classes.
Easy class if you do the readings, weekly quizzes that aren't bad if you attend the review session. Interesting and fun, plus he is willing to help anyone and offers to write letters of recommendation. Take this class if you are at all interested in the subject.
It's an easy class. However, you'd be better off going into the class with some knowldge of the Bible and a good source where you can check some the claims he will make. He means well, but he gives a very poor perspective of believers of this Book, both Jews and Christians. It could be dangerous to take this class to learn about these faiths.

He always begins the course by shooting down the inevitable religously-angled questions and reminding everyone it is a LIT class. He loves the stories of the bible and has made me appreciate them for their fantastic literary qualities.
Brumble was one of the best teachers I've had here at Pitt. He's funny and loves what he's teaching. He's very willing to sit down and talk about your papers and if you pay attention you can get good grades on all of them. i would definitely take him again!
This guy is the man. He's a little eccentric, but very intelligent, loves what he's doing, and if he can't answer a question, he looks it up and gives it back in a handout. I LEARNED MORE FROM THIS CLASS THAN FROM ANY OTHER CLASS. Not too much work, and if you do the reading and go to the review it should be an easy and veru informative class.
This guy is awesome. He certainly does not allow for Christian/Jewish interpretation which can be annoying if you follow either faith, yet you learn a lot in the class. Basically, if you read the assignments, you'll have no problem in the class. WARNING: does give quizzes at the end of class if people leave early, and rarely ends early.
expected you to have tons of knowledge of the bible and its various interpretations before the class. The quizzes are very indepth and require a lot of reading and understanding even before the topic is discussed in class. grade is only quizzes and a final- no midterm, no papers....
Bible as Lit is interesting, and Brumble is clearly passionate about the subject matter. However, DO NOT take this class if you prefer papers over tests. There is a quiz on the reading everyday, and since these quizzes amount to 60% of your grade, you're pretty much screwed if you don't read very closely for each and every class.
Bible as Lit is a phenominal class. Be prepared to do alot of indepth reading. Tough quizzes, but worth all of the work. Took him 2 semesters in a row!
Excellent teacher. I loved class. Honors sections are nice because there is no formal lecture, just discussion. Different than any Shakespeare course I ever took. You have to pay attention in class and understand the material. The first paper is difficult, but if you support your points well you will never lose points for content. I recommend him.
Professor Brumble is an amazing teacher! He makes class interesting and infromative, but you really must want to learn, or else the class may be boring to you. However, if you love learning and have a curiosity about the bible, then take his class...it's facinating!
Brumble is extremely knowledgable about the Bible, however, if you do not know most of the stories, I would advise you not to take this class. 60% of the grade is the weekly quizzes and the questions are very in depth on the week's reading.
I am a science person, so the Bible was intimidating. I was having a hard time understanding the reading the way Brumble wanted me to. I mentioned it to him and he helped me greatly. He is generous w his time & as a result, I got a B in the class instead of the D I was headed towards. I learned much about Bible- something I was prev unfamiliar with
I'm an accounting major and I had absolutely no prior knowledge of the Bible, but I ended up getting a really good grade in the class. All of this was because Brumble was extremely helpful when I asked questions. He truly loves what he's doing and it shows. The class is difficult, but if you do the readings and pay attention, you'll do well.
I had Brumble for Bible as Lit II. He is a great professor, everyone should take the first version of his class. Part II is much more difficult though. He is a very interesting class, but he often goes the full 2.5 hours and gives quizzes every week, so reading is required - do not take if you plan to skip or not read! But you will learn a lot!
the quizes are impossible! this is by far the hardest class ive ever taken i am an all "A/B" student with a major in English and I got a "D" in the class unless you know the stories, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Awesome guy, very helpful and makes the 2 1/2 hour class fun and interesting. Quiz every week on the reading and one comprehensive final.
He's so nice and really interesting. I would have done a lot better if I had the time to study and read more. I'm retaking the class along with the second section of it, hopefully that's not a mistake.
While he may be very interested in the subject matter he teaches, it came across as slightly obnoxious. He wasn't very fair, the reading schedule was ROUGH. Do not take if you don't have 3+ hours to devote to reading per day. He really thinks highly of himself.
Read the text, but not too deep, he wont ask anything ridiculous. if you fail two tests then go talk to him he will help you! Quiz every class, but they are pretty easy. Very well traveled and knowledgeable Prof. Brumblebee is awesome!
He is so knowledgeable and I really enjoy his lectures because he has such great insights. He is very easy to approach and loves to answer your questions. Pay attention to the readings because there's a quiz every class. You get a week to read them, so even though it's alot, it's fair considering the time you have to do it.
Go to every class, read every assignment, and still fail the quizes.. haha, but seriously the TA has all the answers, if you go to the review sessions your quiz grades will skyrocket, the TA also helps with the final. Hard class, a lot of work for an A but attainable.
Professor Brumble is very helpful and involves students very much during lecture in discussion and developing theories. The first couple of papers are hard for Shakespeare Honors, but once you get a grasp of what viewpoint he views Shakespeare through, the course gets easier. Go to office hours, he's always willing to help.
I absolutely loved Prof Brumbles class. I had no knowledge of the bible at all and yet I read almost the complete book in one semester. I felt interested and wanted to learn. Make no mistake it is a lot of reading but Prof Brumble puts a lot of work into helping and answering any questions.
Easy assignments if you go to class, and very helpful if you need it. Lectures can get pretty boring, but he has a few personality quirks that keep things a bit interesting. Very knowledgeable about the subject matter and interesting to talk to about it.
If you don't write exactly what he wants, you won't do well, at all. Went to his office hours multiple times for help on papers, yet did not give a helpful direction. AVOID.
Prof Brumble is great. Lectures/discussions are interesting (he's hilarious) and, though the papers aren't easy, it's by no means impossible to do well in his class.
I took both Bible as Lit and Honors Shakespeare with Brumble, and he is by far my favorite professor at Pitt so far. All of his lectures are actually interesting and he is extremely helpful. His classes aren't hard as long as you are willing to read, I get mostly B's in English courses but had no trouble getting an A in his classes. He's the best!
Got all A's on the quizzes but got a B in the class. He said i could miss a quiz and then changed his mind, which changed my point total at the end. The final is very subjective and the assistant tells you contradictory info to that which Brumble will proffer. It is also very subjective and is not a good indication of your work
EXTREMELY well traveled and researched. Offers unique insights and a healthy respect for students and the material being presented. Enthusiastic about texts and their many layers. A joy to have as a teacher.
Professor Brumble is the reason that I want to go on to pursue a PhD. He is passionate about his subject and is always willing to help. Class readings and discussions in Honors Shakespeare are student picked. His classes define what university ought to be.
BIBLE as Lit: Most awesome, cool, best teacher thus far. Quiz's are easy as long as you read, and reading is not all that hard, just know the material. Very funny during class, and doesn't hound you to answer questions like other profs. Very nice personally and answers all your questions. Syllabus is followed to the TEE. Highly recommend!
Very enthusiastic in what he does. However, he is hesitant in helping students out of class. He expects you to know everything and is very rude when you have trouble. I tried to get help with my essays and he told me I should already know the stuff. I would avoid!
Bible Lit is very interesting and an easy B but if you want an A, you're going to have to do well on the quizzes. He is one of those professors who rather than acknowledge he doesn't know something, will talk around it. Good class but not crazy about the guy himself.
Bible as Lit! Brumble is the man. HIS VOICE SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE DAVID LETTERMAN. He is so funny in class and an extremely knowledgeable man. Doesn't hound for students to answer questions in class, and gets you to really understand the Bible in a new perspective. Definitely take Brumble he's great.
He is the BEST professor I have had so far here at Pitt. Read every week and go to review sessions. If you do this, you will do fine. Quizzes every week but they are based solely off of the reading. Definitely recommend this class and this professor! I miss it already.
Quiz every week which were actually pretty hard even if you do the readings and go to review sessions. Quizzes are at the beginning of the class and then you talk about the book that the quiz was on so it seems pointless to stay. He is a nice guy and I liked him but I would not recommend this class, especially if you're looking for an easy gen ed.
I love Brumble, but not his class. As a religious studies major, I already knew most of what he taught us. You take tricky quizzes on plot at the start of class then talk for 2.5 hrs about plot. He drags out a 50-min class into 2.5 hrs. I got an A, but I wouldn't say it's an easy A. I love Brumble, but find another way to meet him.
I have never put so much time into a class and I still got a terrible grade(had a 3.98 after 27 classes up to this class). Stay far away from him if you have any choice. I had 72 pages of notes and spent at least 5 hours a week on reading and taking notes and all I have to show for it is a D+. What a joke.
Probably one of the nicest professors at pitt, respects each student and his/her opinion, and extremely passionate about the material. If you do the readings and attend the optional weekly review, it's an easy A. Highly recommend!
I often don't do readings in my classes and do fine, but it is a MUST here along with the review if you can make it. Also, come in with an open mind. If you don't want to learn more about The Bible as a story, you'll just leave mad. It's Bible as Lit, not theology; but is useful for those interested in deepening their faith.
His lectures are vivid and inspiring. No prior knowledge of the bible is necessary, for he will sway your mind in a direction you haven't been accustomed to, anyway. If you have the opportunity to take Brumble, do not think twice. To miss out on him would be a grave mistake.
Coming into this class with a lot of prior knowledge about the Bible, I still found this class difficult. By far the most boring lecturer I've ever had. Very hard and specific quizzes (short answer style) at the beginning of every class and sometimes at the end of class too. Only exam which is the final and it is all essay.
Dr. Brumble is awesome! I thought having a night class would be awful. He really made it fun, and I actually WANTED to go to his classes. Super nice guy, helps you understand what's going on. Definitely would recommend and take again.
Honors introduction to shakespeare. several essays about plays that we read in class. students vote on what plays we read. lectures pretty clear. lot of reading out loud. he seems very arrogant and cannot accept or even discuss ideas different from his.
Course was extremely easy, as long as you are willing to put in 2-3 hours a week to study for the weekly quizzes (attending study sessions also advised.) Very approachable, kind, helpful professor (favorite prof so far.) I came from a non-Christian background and still aced the class. Note: Class is secular, so don't take if extremely devout.
Brumble was a good prof. Lectures were long but he rarely dragged it all the way to 8:30pm. Weekly quizzes are 60% of your grade and can be difficult. Extra credit available on most quizzes. Reading required about 3 and 12 hours a week when I took notes (recommended). Written final is other 40%. Stay til the end. Pop quizzes at end of lecture.
Expect to read a chapter of the Bible for class each week and a corresponding section in the text. He gives quizzes at the beginning of every class. I would not recommend skipping lectures or leaving early. I found his lectures entertaining, but lectures are long (2 hours normally).
Professor Brumble is a nice guy, but honestly don't take his class. This class is terribly monotonous, you will want to leave after every quiz at the start of class. His quizzes are hard, you literally have to know every detail of the Bible. Do yourself a huge favor and don't take Bible Lit, you will thank yourself when you have 3 extra hours /week
hes pretty funny
I didn't find this class to be as hard as others. If you go to the quiz and final exam review sessions the A is very easy to get. I will say it's hard to sit there and listen to him talk about the bible for 3 hours, but I already had some interest in the subject and learned more about the Bible from his class than I did as a church-goer.
Brumble is such a goofy and sweet man who shows you the beauty of literature throughout the Bible. He is straight forward with grading. Basically make sure you read, attend review sessions, and attend lecture. Weekly quizzes are mostly straightforward. There are no dull moments in his lectures.
Very enjoyable. Bible as Literature was going to be bad, I thought, but as long as you do the reading and make sure to go to recitation sections the class is easy. He is enjoyable, and Katherine Kidd is a wonderful TA to compliment the class. Dr. Brumble is funny, and easily approachable about any course material. Works with students easily.
