If you want to feel like a complete idiot, take this class. If you want to feel spend all your free time studying to understand the concepts, take this class. If you want to feel like the professor is speaking a different language while lecturing, take this class. If you don't want any of this, AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS!!!
I felt completely confident going into the mid-term, until it was over. There was not adequate time, I couldn't even finish the test! If you want to be completely surprised at test time, go ahead. Other professors teaching this same class are about 2 chapters behind his, he goes way too fast.
Seriously, Im warning everyone, dont take him. Worst prof at Western, wont help you at office hours, completely worthless at answering ?ns. I have a 3.75, and I think I might fail this class. He laughs all the time for no reason and never really answers the questions you ask him.. makes you feel stupid!
This is the worst teacher i have ever had...no joke.. its like he is talking a different language
Possibly the worst professor i have ever had. Goes on and on about the subject even when nobody understands what the heck he is talking about. Provides no help whatsoever, probably would have learned more if a monkey had taught this class.
This would not be that difficult of a class but professor Burnie makes it very difficult. He is all over with his notes. They came in useless while studying for the final. His quizzes are near impossible. I have yet to finish a quiz/exam on time for him. He also says he grades his homework on effort but it is very much on correctness.
Quizzes are impossible with the amount of time given. Goes through chapter?s way too fast, most of us were still stuck in Chap. 8 while he was on 15. He hates to help and gets pissed if you don?t get it due to his horrible explanations. Really makes you feel this _ big. You?ll have to devote your life to this class in order to get a decent grade.
Horrible, never had enough time to finish exams, he doesnt explain anything!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!
I hated this class and this professor....wouldn't answer any of my questions that I had and was very rude if NO ONE in the class knew the answer(because everyone was so lost)
Some people were born to teach. THIS MAN WAS NOT. Get out while you're still alive! Never have I had a worst teacher. If you enjoy having 5 minutes to take your quizes, explanations that leave you even more clueless than before and a man that makes his students feel retarded, then this teacher is for you!
the worst professor I have ever had, do not take
Horrible... Change your teacher well you can!
Not as bad as most people say. If you don't know the basics of accounting and finance you must read the text or you will get lost. Does not spell out everything, but if you understand the material like you SHOULD there is no way to fail. Exams are quite hard but there is a BIG curve. His teaching style is a bit dry.
Very confusing. He doesn't explain things unless you ask, and even the explanations need and explanation. I suggest taking someone else. He curves, but it's based on class performance, so don't count on doing any better.
He will teach you nothing and expect you to know everything.
Very nice man whos will give limited help if pressed. Smart man who knows a lot about finance, but CANNOT teach. Does not explain things well, relies on a poorly written book to explain things. Honestly, this is the worst professor I've had in either undergrad or grad. If your not strong with finance/accounting, drop this class ASAP
Bunie is horrible at teaching. He loves to reference the wall street journal EVERYDAY and not really teach course material very well. When students would ask questions he would never really answer them clearly.
The worst teacher ever. I have never had a teacher that will not help you and views it as a hassle to help a student. I wanted to quit every time I went to class but could not. Do not take this teacher because you will regret it verrrryyy much. Save yourself the headache and take a different teacher.
worst teacher ever u cant finish tests he speaks in a different dialect he is not personable doest answer question if u take him remember to take adderall just to sit in his class he reads the damn journal for most of the damn class not a good teacher at alldrop his class immediately
Worst finance class ever taken. This guy is harsh.
Let me put it this way, this guy makes me want to kick puppies. One mid term was so long that NOBODY in the class finished it on time.
my dog can teach better than him, he is the guy who will make u want to kill yourself in the class, he is the guy who always laughing all the time for no reason, he is the guy gives u 5 min to finish a 20 min quiz. so do this class from someone else and enjoy ur life.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY.
Do NOT take this class....I feel he just teaches because he has a obtained a doc trite and expects you to know everything.....basically you feel like a retard everyday in this class......very intense.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Condescending, hard class already dont take with bernie
Condescending, this class is hard enough already dont take with bernie
Despite all the rants below, I learned A LOT from Dr. Burnie. You HAVE to do the homework assignments and the best time to talk with him is during office hours, not immediately before or after class. You will get out of this class what you put into it. I would definitely take him again.
Do not take finance with this professor!! I have always gotten good grades until now. All he does is go on and on about the wall street journal, "lecture" for 10-15 minutes then expect you to figure out the chapter yourself. His test are insane! No amount of studying or homework could ever prepare you for this. Believe every bad word said.
DO NOT TAKE!!He's condescending. He rambles on about the wall street journal and no one cares."lectures" on everything in the chapter BUT the homework and expects the student figure out ALL the homework on your own.Just wants to hear himself talk.Tests are insanely packed with info.I'm sure there are more personable professors than this guys.
Most people probably try to rip into teachers who annoy them on this website. But for real, Burnie makes sure you know he has a Ph.D. in this stuff.Treats students like they are a hassle to deal with because we do not make a life of this stuff like he does. Quite honestly, take it with someone else and get the credits done. Hope this helps.
Dr. Burnie is very smart. That being said he is not the best at applying his smarts to teaching in a manner that most people can learn from. If you want to put in a lot of extra effort, then take Burnie. He knows the subject, just not very good at teaching it to us noobs...
Well......The topic is hard to begin with, Burnie knows more about it than anyone (i'm convinced) but doing well in this class depends on student effort. The average on our exams ranged around 47% and you leave class with question marks on your notes. You can get a lot out of learning from Burnie, but this class is a WORKOUT
In response to the previous comment. That is the average in the class I am in now. I'm amazed he does not get evaluated by faculty or something, since so many students fail.
Dr. Burnie was my least favorite professor this semester. His classes were boring; he spent half the class going over WSJ instead of our homework or teaching. His tests were hard since it was difficult to grasp the material he was attempting to teach us. I would try very hard to avoid his class.
If you can take this class with another professor I would advise you to do so. His lectures are incredibly boring. All he does is read WSJ articles and reads from his powerpoint. He laughs at himself all the time like Finance is a funny subject. He acts like when people ask questions they are stupid for doing so.
Despite all the negative comments, I got more out of this class then almost any other I have taken. The material is difficult and if you don't do all of the assigned problems, you will struggle. I think you'll get out of this class as much as you put in to it. This is college, stop whining and focus on what (and how much) you are being taught.
He simply cannot answer a question without going in ten different directions at once. My entire class stopped asking questions when it was clear he was not going to answer in a way we could understand. He assumes you know a lot of finance stuff already, which is not true of everyone (we're not all finance majors). Required a subscription to WSJ.
Most difficult class I have ever taken. Any non-finance majors should steer clear. You're expected to have an adept understanding of finance concepts prior to the class. If that's not the case, good luck. Not helpful whatsoever when you have questions. You'll see things on the exam that he has never mentioned.
Not a good teacher. He would rather have you spend all of class struggling through 1 problem then accually make himself useful and accually show you how to do it. Exams are really hard and he doesnt give you a study guide. The only posative is he curves the tests.
Burnie's finance course is probably the hardest on campus. His tests are way too difficult for a "BEGINNING" Finance course. And you won't finish his tests before end of class. Weekly homework is story problems that takes hours, but you only get 1 pt. per week for doing it. But if you don't do the homework, you'll be totally lost. Class avg: CD
The exams are REALLY hard and you have to study for them. What I did (and what seemed to work) was I made a study guide based off the slides he has on eLearning/notes I took in class and re-did the homework. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions or state your confusion. He'll give you a weird look, but your classmates will thank you for it.
Class was very confusing. I haven't taken any accounting or finance classes in a while and he assumed everyone knew too much. When questions were asked he often avoided answering or made you feel stupid for asking. Probably the worst professor I've had at Western.
Absolutely the worst instructor I have ever had at western. He goes through all of the material to fast, and there is no catching up because the book is horrible too. If you do fall behind you will spend the rest of the semester catching up. I feel the material would not be as hard, if he explained everything in more detail. Do not take with him!
One of my least favorite professors of my entire time at WMU. Spends too much time dawdling on WSJ articles, has been ineffective at making harder topics clear, and comes off extremely arrogant.
Don't take class with Doctor Burnie, He no likey students learnie, he talk and write all confusie, homework and tests are big big doozie. No time for customers, no grade adjustomers, a fast paced arrogant, university irritant.
DO NOT TAKE FINANCE WITH BURNIE. You will regret it after the first week. He can't answer questions to the point of understanding and he writes things on the board so fast that you can't follow him. Simply put, he is a Professor that should not be teaching. He is too worried about making you feel stupid rather than teaching. Worst Professor Award.
He is a hard professor!!!!!!!!!! I have not had this experience since I've been at western! He's a nice man but I think the way he teaches this course is too advance for the level it is! I took nothing out of this course if anything I am more confused then when I started taking it! Stock project is so confusing as well.
This is the worst finance teacher at WMU. DO NOT TAKE HIM. I literally sit in class and have no idea what he is explaining on the board because he does it in a way that confuses the entire class. He continually makes rude smirk comments and laughs when some doesnt "get it". Save yourself time and money and DO NOT take his class.
For a beginning finance class, this is probably the hardest class I took at WMU. He comes across completely arrogant, smirks and acts confused if asked a question, or will spend 20 minutes on a problem to come to the wrong answer. The stock project is entirely too confusing, good luck with it. Avoid at all costs.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. He is not an easy class- expect to have to do must of the work on your own. He is not very helpful and expects a lot out of his students without giving them much. Expect tough homework, quizzes & exams. If you have another teacher as a choice I would recommend taking them if you want to pass
First time ever rating someone on here, but I felt it was my civic duty to let everyone know to avoid this professor at all costs. I could go on and on, but what bugs me the most is that he genuinely does not care about the class or students. Worst professor I've ever had. I would have rather took a semester off than put up with him. -Row the boat
If he is an option just pick someone else. I have a 3.8 average and this guy just tanked it. He only lectures on things he doesn't test on, but good luck figuring out what he tests on. It is nothing like the lecture or the homework.
I have Burnie right now and HE is AWFUL and I cant drop the class. he is extremly confusing and all ways ask the student who asked him a question is that a question then make some one else answer it in the class the stock portfolio assighnment is way to difficult and confusing. his study guide was useless for the first exam and the Homework is hard
There's not enough space to rant like he deserves. The homework, while it's worth a few point overall, will take you HOURS to do just a few questions, because he doesn't explain it in class, and the book isn't worth anything to assist you reverse engineering formulas to get one variable that then has to be applied to another formula, and another.
He know's what he's talking about he just really has a poor method to teaching his knowledge. He doesn't put fourth the time to design his own lesson plans and thus doesn't care about the students outside time to prepare for the class. His grading is terrible as well. If you miss a small detail expect to get half off on it if its a hw assignment.
Dr. Burnie has a bad reputation, but he just doesn't take any BS from kids. If you try to do well and actually participate, he will make sure you do ok in the class. The tests are the hardest tests I've ever taken, but he puts a massive curve on it, so don't worry. I got an A despite knowing I failed both tests. Get through it and you'll be OK
If you're struggling already in Finance - DO NOT take Dr. Burnie! He is very intelligent but lacks the ability to actually explain the content in a way that students can understand. There are 4 homework assignments (get ready to work harder then you ever expected) a Stocktrak project, WSJ article presentation and 3 exams.
Don't take class with Doctor Burnie, He no likey students learnie, he talk and write all confusie, homework and tests are big big doozie. No time for customers, no grade adjustomers, a fast paced arrogant, university irritant.
Dr. Burnie has a nice moustache but that's about it. He is very knowledgable on the subject matter but has no idea how to relay it to students. His tests are some of the hardest you'll ever take but he gives a very generous curve. I could ask my cat a question from the in class assignments and he'd explain it better than Dr. Burnie.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS GUY!! He is a really smart guy but does not know how to teach what-so-ever. I'm currently in the class and although I'm doing good accademically, I havent learned a thing. I dont think this guy is good for WMUs Bus. college, I'm hopefull that someone important sees this and gets rid of the dude.
Highly "Not" Recommended. The professor often left the question on the table before we all what is going on. Basically having us to fly before we even know how to walk. Often focus on the powerpoint slides and have a minimum amount of explanation.
Possibly the worst professor in Hcob besides Ferrin. Doesn't link topics in class to real application and assumes every student knows what he knows when asking the class questions. Tests are brutally hard but are curved generously. Try to stay away from his classes if possible!
currently sitting in his class completely lost along with the entire class. STAY AWAY! He thinks everyone has the financial knowledge and eagerness to write out extensive in class formulas to find an answer that your calculator or excel could compute. Overall quite disappointed by his willingness to make sure his students follow the course.
The worst professor, by far, I have ever taken at WMU. Burnie does not care about his students. His exams are so ridiculously hard that the there ends up being a 50% curve on everything. Bloomberg homework is ridiculously hard as well. DO NOT TAKE HIM AS A PROFESSOR IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE.
Overall nice guy, but do not take this professor. There are not many homework assignments, but each one will take absolutely forever to complete because he doesn't lecture productively. He works very fast through content, and is very difficult to keep up with. Chegg has taught me more than him, and my final is this week. Go Broncos, and FTC
I had Dr. Burnie this fall and have never been more frustrated. I am usually pretty good at math and enjoy it however, the way he teaches makes things difficult. He never responds to emails, he was very rude to me anytime I asked questions or met with him outside of class, and his lectures consist of him reading off functions w/o examples.
Dr. Burnie means well but is just too smart for his own good. This instructor has caused a blemish on the respected HCOB at WMU. He teaches as if everyone is on the same level as himself and uses very little examples. Highly recommend staying away from Dr. Burnie unless you enjoy misery.
This class is extremely hard if finance is not your major. Do not take this class with this prof. He barely does examples and they are always so confusing.
I have had pretty bad professors but David Burnie is the worst of the worst. I went to every class did every homework, participated in class and still didnt know how to do the problems on the exam. This class felt like a waste of time and money and I would not recommend taking finance with this professor
Dr. Burnie is very knowledgeable in the field of finance, however, has no capabilities in terms of how to teach it. His lectures are very confusing and hard to follow on the minimal examples he uses. His exams are also the hardest exams I have taken in college and leave you feeling as though you have gone throughout the semester not learning much.
He was great at responding to emails and questions if you have any. However, he would get so hung-up on a problem we would waste time and fall behind. Also, the tests were difficult. If finance or accounting is not your major, please do not take his class.
Assumes the class understands what he's talking about when his lectures, homework, and test questions do not even compare to one another. Does not care about the class actually learning, speaks to you in a condescending manner, and way out of touch. Take finance from someone else if you want to learn the material and pass this class.
Absolute joke of a professor. A condescending loser with all questions asked by myself and other students. He must get off on having entire waves of students fail his class. HCOB seriously needs to handle this guy, let alone the mass amount of students not passing FIN3200. Even the advisors know of the issues surrounded by this professor/course
I am so disappointed as a student on how often I get professors that do not care if you pass at WMU. Bernie is so intimidating/rude and will humiluate you in class if you don't know the answer. Exams are in a completely different context as to what he learned I studied for several hours a day and still didn't understand a single thing on the test.
Burnie is by far the worst TEACHER I've ever had. Doesn't go off the book at all and just makes problems up on the fly. If you ask him a question get ready to be insulted. He is has a very deep understanding in finance but is completely incapable of teaching. If you get him as a professor drop his class immediately and find another professor.
This is the worst professor I have ever taken. He is very condescending and humiliates his students in class if they do not know the answer. He also doesn't put his grades in the grade book so you will not know what you received in the class until the last week of the semester. If he can be avoided, take someone else!
David Burnie might be the hardest professor I've ever taken in my entire life. He is a genius and too smart for his own good. He does not explain things well for an entry level Finance Course. He will not respond to your emails. Do the homework right after the lecture, and take good notes or you will fail.
I highly recommend taking this class with a different professor. Dr. Burnie is very knowledgeable, however, should not be a professor. He will make you and everyone in the class feel stupid for asking a question. And, his lectures are rarely beneficial because he goes too fast or far too in-depth. It is still possible to do well if you work hard.
Extremely knowledgeable, but he is not interested in students learning at all. Uploads assignments and worksheets with no instructions at all. Wonders why nobody does them or knows how to do them. Hands out worksheets in class with no instruction, gets upset when nobody has it done in 5 minutes. Straight up says he just deletes emails from students
By far the worst professor I’ve had. Doesn’t put grades in until the the end of semester so you have no idea where you are at in the class. I’ve always been pretty smart at school &this class makes me feel stupid. He doesnt know how to teach well. If you can take this class with another professor you should. My first class I ever failed.
Burnie is really passionate about everything he teaches but very over qualified to teach this class. He is too smart. Be prepared for this class to be extremely challenging and impossible exams that are luckily curved. Find friends in this class to help you survive through the difficult assignments. He does offer connect assignments for extra credi
AWFUL class. Burnie just does not know how to teach. Gives you homework after speeding through the material with totally confusing examples. He is pretty rude if you don't know answers to the confusing questions he randomly asks. My whole class was laughably lost for 80% of the course. Made me never want to even consider taking the CFA exam.
- If you try to answer a question that he is specifically asking, your answer will get shot down and told wrong. - he makes you feel misunderstood and that all students are below him - I went to him many times for exam advice, i got vague answers about how I should have done the homework more times over - he holds the class over the time limit
Professor Burnie is super smart, but honestly, too smart for the basic finance course FIN 3200. Most of the time his examples are created on the fly and he switches the numbers in the examples in class. Teaches too fast and expects you to know the material before class. Overall I hated this class, and will never take it again with him.
Burnie gives absolute zero care for the students. Teaches the class like the students have been working in finance for years and should know everything. Gives zero examples what so ever and doesn't go over how to solve anything. Very rude to students as well, if you get stuck having to take this class with him... DON'T!!! Please wait to take class.
I don't think this guy could teach a baby to breathe. Must know the material before he teaches it, he forgets we know nothing. Single handedly the worst teacher. Class test average under 50%. Good Luck to anyone who doesn't cheat their asses off. He will NOT teach you how to understand the formulas, so again good luck. Burnie can kick rocks.
Super smart and seemingly nice guy, but one of the worst professors I've had. Has zero intention of actually connecting with students to teach them. He does not put his students in positions to be successful at all. He expects students to be as smart as he is when it comes to terminology and formulas. No study guides or formula examples. Good luck!
I'm fully expecting to fail this class and have my 3.91 GPA ruined. Even good students are painfully lost in Burnie's class. I tend to think that RMP reviews are bogus but everything that everyone is saying about this guy is true. Please don't take his class, hopefully if enough people stop taking his class, then HCoB will do the right thing.
Get ready to waste your time and money. In class presentation, hard exams, terrible lectures, and he has no sympathy for students. Easily the most worthless class I have ever taken. Exams with almost no in class preparation. Just sign up with the other professor that they are offering now.
If I had ratings like this, I would be out of business! Pain to all students. He only has 1 course next semester, another professor has 2 courses. That professor will actually teach you about Finance and not be disrespectful to students. He is getting weeded out as he should. Do yourself a favor and sign up for the other professor for FIN 3510.
This professor makes me want to go home and smoke a cigarette. I have a 3.5 GPA and have never failed a class but I am greatly fearful that I won't pass this one. Even some of the brightest students are lost in this class. His lectures are hard to follow, and the there is no study guide for the exams. Good Luck!
Worst professor I've had at WMU. Doesn't care about the students or their success. Expects 100% accountability from students but displays none himself. Gives condescending and passive-aggressive responses to questions in class and in emails. Everybody in the class was completly lost and worried about failing. I feel bad for his future students.
No idea what he was teaching in class. If you want to pass his class, get the McGrawHill connect and do the homework (self-study).
Actually doesnt care about students and you have to take each test and just pray.
There are a lot of bad reviews on this professor, and they are all true. The most helpful piece of advise I can give would be to work with friends in the class, and also to utilize the connect alongside each lecture. The homeworks on connect are similar to the exam questions. There is another teacher offering this class.
Dr. Burnie is an excellent and highly knowledgeable professor. He is exactly the kind of professor you need if you are serious about a career in finance. I felt very fortunate to have a professor with his level of business acumen and his willingness to help as one of my finance major professors. Do the work and you will excel in his class!
Avoid this professor at all costs. He cares more about students wearing hats (pauses class and waits) than teaching you finance fundamentals. Berated a student in my class for asking what resources we should use to prepare for an exam. Exams are painful. Laughs at questions and gives non-answers. I do not believe Burnie should be teaching at WMU.
Easily the worst professor I've ever had. Assignments are unclear, barely explained, and you're just expected to figure everything out yourself. Exams are just vague essay questions. Regardless of the submission quality, you get 85% for all assignments, midterm and final. No feedback, no fairness, no learning, just frustration and disappointment.
I deeply regret taking this class. While Professor Burnie is knowledgeable, the course is excessively rigid and discouraging, with grading that feels punitive rather than educational. Even consistent effort can result in significant GPA damage. The stress outweighed the learning. I strongly wish I had chosen a different professor.
