Class is easy if you show up everytime. Gives notes in very structured form
I hardly ever went to class, and still swung an A-
very clear lectures, if you go to every class, you'll get an a. very structured
Highly recommended. He makes your hand hurt from writing notes, usually most of the hour. He writes everything on the board, all you have to do is copy. No text is needed. Graded on 4 MC exams. Go to class, study notes, get an A.
good class, very structured, and is a good guy talk with him he knows alot.
He was an ok professor. He wasn't very interesting to listen to, butIf you go to class every day and study for the test, you should be good. Also, the class is structured in a way that it is easy enough to improve your grade, with lots of quizes.
Very knowledgeable on the topic being discussed; helpful; clear on expectations (he writes notes on the board...hard not to get an A)!
He brings ASTRO down to a level you can understand. I am not a "science person" so this class was tough for me (my lowest grade ever - which isn't a bad grade, but it is still my lowest ever). Go to class and take notes, that is what helped me.
very enthusiastic about teaching. He is very helpful, and presents everything in a clear manner, take notes, study them, don't buy the book, and your golden.

i have class at 8am every tuesday and thursday. he gives great notes and is very lively. he's definitely my favorite professor this semester.
Great prof, very detailed and makes sure you understand what he's talking about. If you takes notes, all of which is put on the board, you'll do just fine. Knows the answer to everything:)
Even though it's been 4 years since I've taken this class, I still remember Professor Bush being a very kind and helpful teacher when it came to physics. I'm bad at math, but he was so clear and concise when he taught that I (with hard work) got a B in his class. Give it up for D. Bush - he's awesome.
He is explained everything clearly and didn't make the class harder than it had to be.
One of the best science classes I've taken here. Clear notes, knows what he's talking about. Sense of humor! If you go to class, take his notes down, take the quizzes, and study for 10 minutes or so, you'll do just fine!
THIS GUY IS THE MAN
I loved this guy. Great sense of humor and effective, simple, teaching.
Lectures were extremely clear, clear enough that a seven year old can understand what he's teaching, and he obviously loves what he's doing. His lectures are enthusiastic, and my only maybe complaint is that he's so excited that he sometimes goes too fast and misses questions. Excellent exam prep sheets for the students, too.
i love david bush
Don't need the book because all test information can be found from lecture notes. He realizes that we're not ASTR majors, and doesn't go too far in depth or give us information we don't need. I would definitely reccomned him!
The best thing about him is he seems to be a humble man. That is the one thing that really stood out. Attend the lectures, study his notes, and you will get an A. Made me realize how incredibly small we are in this incredibly big universe.
HE WAS AN AWESOME TEACHER, REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT HE TEACHES AND MADE PHYSICS EASY TO LEARN! PAY ATTENTION TAKE GOOD NOTES AND YOU WILL GET AN A AND HE IS EXTREAMLY HELPFULL IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND!!!
He is a very good professor, I love him. We didn't use a book in this class. everything came from lecture note. The greatest thing about this class was that bush wrote out everything you was suppose to take notes on, all you had to do was copy and study your notes. I do advise you to attend class often because he gives a quiz every week. It's easy!!
He is a wonderful teacher you have to go to every class because the test are on the lectures but he is very helpful
Nice guy. Must go to class because everything you will need to know he writes on the board (copy it all). Do not buy the text book, you'll never use it. It's a good class if you just need a science but can be a bit dull. Quizzes weekly with four exams. Exams just require memorizing the notes.
Great professor, makes all the crazy stuff comprehensible. Presented in easy outline form.
This man is an amazing teacher. He has a passion for science and he made me care, even though I'm not really into science. If you show up every day, copy everything he writes on the board, and study, you'll get an A. He has good jokes, too!!!
I wouldn't call this professor amazingly awesome but he was pretty amusing. His demonstrations were those that you'd show to a first grader learning science. But it was a pretty easy class and made it easy to get all of the notes needed as long as you went to class.
I really enjoyed his class a lot. It was nice to have a professor who really knew what he was talking about. If you go to class it's an easy A.
He was a really good professor. Yes, you have to take a lot of notes, but he does give you a detailed review sheet before exams. Plus he's REALLY FUNNY. A friend i worked with and myself would always share our David Bush statment of the week.
I LOVE PROF. BUSH! He is such a kind man with a real passion for what he is teaching. There was no textbook and he wrote all of the notes on the board which was nice because it gives you time to write them down neatly yourself. I liked astronomy before, but this class revamped my love and I changed my major to earth science!
Very clear explanation of topics, and he wants to be sure everyone understands. It was nice he didn't require the most recent edition of the text, saves you a ton of money, but you only really need the text if you miss class or want to learn more. Very good notes.
He's hilarious. Doesn't go over information too quickly or too slowly. And the book is never needed unless you miss a class. The easiest way to get an A in this class is to show up, take notes, and study for the weekly quiz. (Which is only 5 questions)
He is hilarious! He writes out all the notes on the board, so taking notes isn't hard. Definitely take him, he's a great professor.
Very enthusiastic teacher.
Prof. Bush was extremely corny. Toward the end of the semester he rushed to get a lot of information, which made the class more difficult, but he's an okay teacher!
Very good pro. His notes are very clear and will explain anything. His jokes might suck but he is very nice. Homework isn't graded nor collected so you only have to do it if you want to. In-class activities every class - easy points. Tests are kind of hard. Get a 3X5 index card for tests. Dont buy book, you dont need it.
He gets way off topic and rushes a lot of information. He assumes that everyone knows what he is talking about and if you seek help he doesnt help you at all. He has no social skills. He has a good heart but i wouldnt take his class
Notes and in-class assignments every class, so it's good to attend class and you'll get easy points. Sometimes he messes up on examples for the notes and talks too much. Fairly easy to get a decent grade.
Very good teacher. He knows his stuff and enjoys teaching it, plus he's very willing to answer any questions anyone may have
Hated this class. It was boring, everyone by the end of the semester was sick of him. He tries to be funny, he's not. He was sooooo boing. He used examples that were so weird and stupid you feel like your in kindergarden. There was a quiz everyweek and 4 tests and unless you memorize or already know this stuff you are screwed. Dont take this class.
He provides information overload. He provides a lot of notes on the board but it is a lot and its just too much to put on the students- for them to grasp and understand, Don't take him!!!!!!!!He is not very helpful-
Good guy, HORRIBLE prof. Too much information. Had to take the class twice to pass with just a C. He seems fake because all he does is have you copy notes down all hour. boring. Grade is based on quizzes and tests only.
He tries to make it fun but it's still extremely boring and pretty hard. Grades are based off of quizzes and tests which aren't the easiest. Be prepared to take a lot of notes!
If you take his notes the class is a breeze, he's a good prof. and knows his stuff, these people that are complaining are nuts i guess , you get to use a notecard on all the exams and he's pretty good at explaining things so theres really no reason to complain
I loved Dr. Bush. He was very helpful and nice. He has that whole "grandpa" thing about him. Lets you use a NOTECARD on every test! Tests are easy as long as you study. Weekly in-class assignments & labs are extremely EASY! I wish he taught all PHYSICS CLASSES, I definitely recommend him!
I liked Dr. Bush. He is very clear in his lectures. He writes all the notes you need on the board and gives exam outlines before exams. He is a good professor.
He is so nice and very helpful. He wants you to do well in his class; in class assignment so attendance is necessary (all the in class assignments equal to 124 free points). He is the sweetest guy!
Prof Bush is great-he tries hard to make the information understandable for "everyday" use. Take NOTES! He allows you a 3x5 notecard for tests-really helpful!
Overall good professor. Make sure you go to class to get your points for the in-class activities...all add up to 124 free points. Also allowed to use a 3x5 index card on all tests!!!
Actually got me semi-interested in astronomy- extremely nice and very sweet.
Made astronomy fun, as well as educational. Class required a good amount of note taking though. Overall I really enjoyed the class.
He is a great professor! He makes astronomy bearable and he gives you chances for extra credit. He's extremely sweet and intelligent. Take him if you have the chance!
NO NEED FOR THE TEXTBOOK NEVER CRACKED IT OPEN. He, however, is marvelous. He has extreme interest in astronomy and makes interesting points using facts, photos, and graphs to arise every learning tactic. His exams are extremely in depth, so therefore the lectures end up being mandatory if you want to get a good grade.
Great professor. Very clear notes. Writes everything out in a well structured manner that's easy to copy and understand. Highly recommend him. Attend class and it's an easy A.
He is one of the nicest professors I've had. He speaks clearly, stops for questions, and shows a passion for astronomy. Also, people should be grateful for the level of difficulty in the class. He explains things in a way anyone could understand.
A really nice guy; I'd highly recommend him if you're going to take Astronomy at EMU. You get the opportunity to learn without having to worry about your grade much..
very straight forward, good sense of humor. everything you need for the test is in the lecture. you do one daily assignment thats 5 points but you can only do them the day of so come to class. if i had more time i would definately take another class with him
Attendance itself is not mandatory, but there is an in-class exercise he hands out each class, that you can miss four of total - without dinging your grade. Overall, the guy is awesome. HIGHLY knowledgeable, good humor and ANYTHING in his exams is covered in lecture; Highly recommended. He obviously loves what he does, which makes it a huge plus.
Although attendance is not mandatory, it is recommended that you attend class to receive the points he gives you for the in class exercises (24 total, only 20 count). He knows what he is talking about and all his material is on the test. I recommend anyone needing or wanting to take Astronomy 105 to take it with this professor.
Rather easy class. Show up everyday. Take the notes from his power point and you'll be good. Everything that is on the test is covered in class. He also gives out 4 points each class if you show up and do his assignment (if you do it you get the credit)
Great class. I'm the worst at memorizing large quantities of data, but this professor made it very easy. The class was split into four sections, each with it's own study overview. Lectures are done with Power Point for easy note taking. If you pay attention, take notes and study this class is simple to pass.
TAKE HIM! I was so scared to take physics, but he's a GREAT teacher. Gives you your notes, so you don't need to buy the book. & He gives plenty of extra credit. Go to class, do the extra credit, it will help your grade esp if you're not a great test taker.
Very easy class. Exams are straight from the lectures. Do the homework and study the lecture notes and you should get a good grade.
Great teacher! Gives a 4 pt assignment each class as a way of attendance. Gives clear lectures and power points which makes note taking easier. Also offers extra credit if needed.
This guy radiates enthusiasm. You can tell he passionately loves his job. He wants to see his students succeed and understand the material. In the summer version of this class there was a quiz and exam every week, which distributes the load very nicely. He is my 3rd physics teacher at EMU and I highly regret not choosing him in the past.
David made topics interesting. He used mostly powerpoints but they were clear, easy to follow, and easy to write notes in an organized fashion. There were 4 exams including the final. If you take good notes and study them before the exam you should be fine. Rented the book, never even opened it, just be sure to take notes and go to class.
Although he seems to be very knowledgeable on the subject, I was hardly engaged in his class. It was strictly lecturenote based and tests. Personally, I feel that it could be improved by including hands-onupdated resources and supplemental materials.
He's probably one of the nicest people I've met in my life. He's passionate about Astronomy and that shows in his lectures. The lectures are interesting, but the lighting in the planetarium and the acoustics will make it hard to stay awake at times. Don't need to memorize formulas, but you need to memorize the units for the formulas.
You have an in class assignment every day that you get points for (theyre super easy) and you have 4 tests, and if you just take the notes and pay attention you're guaranteed to pass
Professor Bush is incredibly knowledgable about astronomy. I am a Business major and took this class as one of my gen eds. He understands that it is a survey course and that not many will pursue astronomy. Tests are challenging but he gives you all the notes you need plus a study guide. Moderate studying for exams. only grades exams & in class work
Every class is a lecture. Each class you have an in class assignment so you really don't want to miss because they will hurt your grade in the end. Only four exams so you really have to memorize your notes 100% to pass the exam. No extra credit. Study hard and take good notes and you'll be fine. Don't waste your money buying a book.
He is literally awesome. Kind of nerdy, but he is both a good teacher, and a good person. Really passionate about what he teaches.
I love his outfits. Very interesting class, LOVED ASTRONOMY! Very prepared, graded tests and assignments very quickly. Gave extra credit. Great class!
super nice guy. overall the class was easy and interesting. exams are MC and pretty easy if you study your notes. no surprises on exams. he's helpful if you need it. in class assignments daily, easy points. he goes over them as a group and you get points just for doing it. didn't touch the textbook.
Dave Bush was a very confusing prof with really long and dry lectures. He did not make use of the planetarium in which our class was held in, his tests are super involved, and he could have done so much more to help enhance the awesome subject that is astronomy. I regret taking this class.
He gets a little off topic in the lectures, but does explain things really well. He gives participation points on worksheets, but only if you're in class. No homework for points, but it's good practice for the exam. Similar questions show up from the HW. Lets you use a note card for each exam.
Has great enthusiasm for his field and often gets carried away with himself when talking (adorable in a sense). He is older so he is often very proud of himself when he does something new in his slides. All tests are off of his slides. Have no homework, just study a lot for the tests. You can miss up to 4 classes with no repercussions. Nice guy.
Hes a nice man who is clearly passionate about this subject. The worst tests ever. He doesn't know how to not make every change to the PowerPoint 1 page. The powerpoints are 150+ pages. He gives you a study guide for test. Don't bother. It's literally everything. Anything on those 150+ pages per chapter, 3 chapters per test. Too much to absorb.
Amazing guy and you can tell he loves what he teaches, but the tests killed me. Study guide did not help, was just an outline of his powerpoints. Expected more use of the planetarium, which I was geeked about at the beginning of the course. Used it once.
Great Prof. He was helpful and caring when we didn't understand something. He really put effort into making his lectures interesting and his slides concise.
Not a hard class by any means. Show up and manage to pay attention.
Bush is definitely passionate about what he teaches which is dope, but the tests are pretty tough. Make sure you show up to class, because all he does is lecture and you have to take his notes and that's what'll help you pass the class. He also does in-class exercises every day and if you're absent, you can't make up those points.
A great professor.
Really hard for an intro class. His exams were hard and attending class was mandatory because we did a lot of in class assignments. I would not expect an intro class to be so hard. I was really interested in astrology, but this class and professor made me dislike it.
Very nice guy, passionate about what he teaches. Small assignments pretty much every class that are worth 5 points each, but you can make them up if asked to. If you skip classes you wont know whats on the exams and you'll most likely fail, and it's not stuff that you can just bluff through.
Class difficulty depends on if you take good notes during the lectures.
Textbook is listed as mandatory but we never actually used it--don't waste your money on it. Astronomy is held in the planetarium, which is really cramped. Attendance isn't taken but he gives in-class exercises every class instead, which is basically an attendance grade. There's a lot of material covered on the exams, it's hard to memorize it all
Textbook was required yet I never had to use it. Too much information provided to be able to memorize all of it for the tests. The class was held in the planetarium yet we only used it maybe twice. Attendance was not mandatory, however there were in class assignments every class
Professor Bush is a really cool person. Very enthusiastic and loves to teach. However, his tests and quizzes are not his. He does not write is own exams so when he gives a lecture or a study guide, it is practically useless. Do not take him for ASTRO 105 because it is difficult to pass the class with anything higher than a B.
David Bush is a really nice guy, and clearly loves what he teaches, however he is sometimes hard to understand as he can go off on tangents and sometimes skips or ignores things in his own presentations. Everyday there is a little "review" assignment worth 5 points which are easy enough especially since they are done together.
Professor Bush is a nice guy, but his lectures are very boring. However, me not being good at science, this was a relatively easy class. Go to class and get the daily points and you wont fail!
Took for gen ed, but the lectures were still very interesting! Don't miss or arrive super late, or you'll get a zero on an in-class assignment. Super easy A minus in ASTR 105. I wish we had used the book I paid for. Loved the planetarium and watching the show! Recommended.
I think Professor Bush is great, however he lectures every class and talks kind of fast. Be prepared to pay attention, he goes through slides fast. The text book is never used in the class! Save your money and rent or borrow someone else's if you need to. The class is an easy A. Attendance isn't taken, but there are "warm-ups" done every class.
Definitely have to work for your grade but all and all a super fair class!
Really heavy on lectures that are not interesting. He didn't really use the planetarium, maybe once or twice. You can go to class every day but still manage to end up with a low grade. The tests were really difficult. Its nice he really likes what he teaches but I still wouldn't take another class with the guy.
Your grade in this course was based off 4 exams totaling (400 points) and in class assignments (100 points all together.) I am not the best with science and his exams are pretty tough but with a lot of hard work this class is definitely fair. Beware I did have to study for hours for exams and work my hardest I ever had to work for a B+.
He is great. Make sure you go to class for the in-class quiz things they will help with the tests and count as participation for your grade. Tries to keep it exciting, but most of the jokes are terrible. Study a lot for the tests. Taking pictures of the slides is also a good idea. Book not needed goes directly off the powerpoints.
Professor Bush is a gem of a teacher. He very clearly loves his topic and is willing to help his students in any way he can. He is not very tech-savvy but he gives it his best effort and I found his class very enjoyable, despite not being much of a science person.
David is a good professor and seems very nice, although it was an asynchronous class so I only have a small amount of insight on that. His written lectures are very strangely formatted and I struggled with that at the beginning of the semester but once I figured it out, I managed to handle it a bit better. You definitely have to try hard to pass.
You can tell he loves teaching. He let us stay home if we wanted to instead of going to class because of Covid. The exams and quizzes are all open book and open note, and the powerpoints are pretty clear. If you take notes off the power points you can get 10/10 on the quizzes. Make sure you study for the exams. Overall great prof.
david was great. didn't have a problem taking his class
His lectures are lawful. Moves through the slides so fast and theres so much information in just one slide. Only get 10 minutes to take a 10 question quiz which he considers "open note". You dont need the text book at all. He lets you do the course online class is bearable but definitely too big a learning curve to be a required gen ed. Good luck!
Do not take this class. Not only are there two quizzes a week (10 minutes for 5 questions), but the exams are SO difficult. He gives 50 minutes for 50 questions. I studied so much and it was never enough time. I do not recommend this course at all and it is way too difficult for it to just be a gen ed.
Really good astronomy professor. He has in-class attendance optional and uploads all class lectures to canvas via PowerPoint/pdf. We do have a textbook but I never used it. Take good notes on the power points and you will pass with an A. Grades are just quizzes and tests, and they were not too bad.
You can clearly tell he loves what he teaches. It is lecture-based, but all of the lectures are posted online (could be a Covid thing, not sure). You have a quiz after 2 lectures and a test after the unit. If you know your stuff, they aren't hard at all. Overall, very easy class and very nice guy.
Not disagreeing with any other posters but this was a hard class overall. Not enough time for tests and quizzes. I am a 4.0 student but this class was unbearably hard for a 100 level course. If you want an easy course look elsewhere. Got an 86 but syllabus states it's still a B.
Bush himself is such a sweet old man with a passion for space; but holy christ are his tests hard. He writes the questions himself, and even though they are open note they are incredibly hard to finish in time. You only get a minute per question on exams which is really unfair and gives you no time to go through your notes.
David is so kind and has a huge passion for what he teaches. The quizzes and exams are timed and tough, but they're online and open note. Attendance isn't mandatory. The lectures are great for following with notes. I enjoyed this class and David was an awesome professor.
Dr. Bush is genuinely one of the best professors I have ever had. He was very kind and cracked jokes all the time. Attendance was not mandatory, and every lecture was posted on canvas. The quizzes and exams were very easy, and you are able to use the book and notes for them as well. Take him if you have the chance!
Awesome guy! Funny and major cool uncle energy. Keeps things interesting and memorable!
Extremely awesome professor. Goated, in fact. Kind, cared about his subject very much, had clear, engaging lectures, and an awesome classroom. Tests were easy and intuitive. DEFINITELY have him as a professor.
very funny and passionate guy! His tests are open book and not all that difficult if you pay attention in class. He is very fair in grading with tests which I like. His lectures are interesting and he always has cool videos.
Professor Bush is incredibly passionate about astronomy, but his class is quite challenging. Timed quizzes and exams are difficult, even with open-note policies. However, using Unstuck ai alongside the textbook and lecture notes can really help with study prep. Overall, a tough but rewarding class.
Professor Bush is one of the best lecturers I've had, encouraging me to go attend his class even though attendance isn't required. He is able to explain astronomy in a way that makes his class easy to pass, despite the decent volume of work. Even if that last sentence would normally push you away, I would encourage everyone give his class a try.
Take this professor!!, he's pretty laid back
Professor Bush seems like he knows his stuff but if you take the online asynchronous class be prepared to teach yourself, he just throws slides and a quiz at you each week and pretty much tells you to teach yourself from the slides then take a quiz based off the material. He puts zero effort into teaching the online class.
