Although he always teaches a night class, his classes aren't boring. Though we have to pen down his lectures fast, but it's worth it to get the A for his tests. He's a pretty lenient grader and extremely helpful. He also releases class early sometimes. I definitely recommend him if you're taking hist 1.
Super laid back...Grade comes from 4 tests, your lowest grade (except the final) can be dropped-All tests are super easy. I never read the book. He gives out review terms before the week of the test. Lectures can be a bit boring but he is very open to students questions and comments and tries to keep you interested. Overall very easy class.
david byrne is kinda open-minded, young and handsome, tests are easy, funny at times. man, he just keeps me awake for the 3 hours in the night class! he's so hawwtttt! everybody should take him!
His class is easy. He makes a boring history class to be fun and interesting. Show lots of patience in the class. I definitely recommend people to take his class. You won't regret!!!
He is really cute and makes history seem interesting... or maybe he’s just cute and that's why I never missed class! Ha! the solution for attendance... hire hot intelligent teachers! Oh but he does have blank moments were he seems to be digging in his head for the historical answer... adds to his cuteness, I think!
Awesome! Great teacher, has 4 quizzes, 1 midterm, and 1 final (all essay). Is funny, knows his stuff, and is a fair grader! Take him!
Byrne is probably one of the coolest teachers you'll come across. Doesn't take attendence, and lets the class know what the questions are going to be for tests. All essay format, so if your a good writer I recommend his class.
One of the best history professors out there in America. His lectures are very engaging and his tests are a piece of cake. Just listen to his lectures, don't buy the book, borrow it from the library or just go to wikipedia to look up the terms. Guaranteed A in the class.
Everything I could ask for in a man: good looks, great clothes, and doesn't complain if you're late. Yum.
First off, I took his online History class. He will give you full credit if you turn your assignments in late! And if you do the reading you learn A LOT about history. Overall super simple class great guy if you do all your work expect and A or B.
OK. Byrne is clear, concise, and knowledgeable. The class does get tedious since it is taught solely lecture style. No need to do the reading -- tests are all essay or short answer format and based entirely on the lectures. Lets his 3 hour evening classes out sometimes a full hour early. Detail oriented, but fair/easy grader. Recommended.
His lectures were very interesting. had lots to read. i took this class over the summer so it was all crammed and went by real fast. he is a fair/easy grader. had lots due: discussions, definitions, midterm, and final. CAN TURN PAPERS LATE BUT ONLY A DAY! overall a good easy class. hopefully i have time to take hist2 with him. TAKE HIS CLASS!
I really enjoyed my History Western Civ. class taught by David Byrne. His lectures were interesting, and he brought his passion for history with him to class which made it really enjoyable. I had tried taking this class before but was bored out of my mind. He made me want to learn about it. Love his enthusiasm, and blue eyes!
One of the best professors I have ever had. Clear, interesting, inspiring lectures with a refreshing lack of pretention. I highly recommend his class. He's very intellegent and well informed- I can't say enough good things!
Crystal clear on his lectures and on what is required to pass his class. Very fair grader. His exams are pretty easy as long as you take good notes, especially since he lets you know what the questions will be ahead of time. Highly recommended.
finally!!!! a professor that emphasize the significance of an event rather then making you remember dates. 4 test all essay format. he gets the class involved..sit infront of the class and make sure he know your name. as a history major i loved his class and i would recomend it to anyone who is interested in learning
his class is a bit boring, however he knows history and makes it easy. all of his tests are essays, never multiple choice. he gives you questions for the essays ahead of time, so it is really easy to get an A in this class. does not care about dates. take this class!
An amazing class taught by a wonderful teacher. Very engaging if you are interested in the subject matter. Can get tenuous at times, but the at-times boring subject matter is resolved by his willingness to engage in discussion. If you are a capable history student and attend class/involve yourself in discussion regularly, it's an easy a.
Pretty straightforward online class. You have key terms due every five weeks, essay format for midterm and final, and interesting discussions every week. All in all, I'm glad I took History 1 with Professor Byrne.
Amazing teacher. He is a very cool and understanding guy. You can see he is passionate about the subject and he explains very well. His tests are essays so make sure to write everything you can. I took him for summer and got an A. 2 quizzes, midterm, and final. Participation and attendance is 10% of your grade. Basically, GREAT teacher not too hard
Dr. Byrne is the best lecturer at SMC. His lectures are clear and will prepare you for 4 year university professors. If you are majoring in history you should definitely take Dr. Byrne.
Easiest class ever! I took his online 16 week class. He literally gives all the key terms 100% A+ if you fill it all out and never checks them for accuracy(his comments on all of my key terms are the same!) Midterm and Final are easy, just write it off of the notes he give each week. You don't even have to read the textbook. Good luck!
This professor is very easy going, and perhaps the easiest grader I have ever taken. Nonetheless, he manages to get his point across and you leave with a broad understanding of the subject.
waste of money to buy the textbooks. just contribute to the discussions (he doesn't seem to read them) and do the keyterms every couple of weeks and midterm/final essays. I never even read the lectures. I just googled the keyterms and essay topics to learn from there and then wrote my essays. DO NOT PLAGERIZE though - not worth the consequenses.
Take Byrne! Great class, great professor. You won't regret it! Seriously enjoyed myself.
Don't take him online. He's not clear in what he wants. He tells you one thing in the directions and when you completed his task he comes back saying he wants more, thats not what he wanted. He would be more interesting as an up close professor. Rarely used books, indeed waste of money. Most of the things you can grab online and just refererrance.
He lectures the whole class but he manages to keep your attention. He is funny does not give out busy work and the tests are essays! i'm in his class now and I love him!
Don't buy the textbook. May seem easy but in the end he might screw you over. I got all A's on my essays and still got a B. Go to class everyday! The in class essays are all lecture, NOTHING FROM THE TEXTBOOK!
Really cool guy. Inspired me to be more interested in history. Although the entire class is lecture i really didnt have a problem with it.
Really good teacher, I definitely recommend him! We never used the textbook, but his lectures are really clear. He also uses films which help and he gives you test questions ahead of time so you know what to study. There's no homework just 3 quizzes and a take home final. And he's really cute and has really nice blue eyes!
Great professor!!! Very clear and straight to the point class discussions. Does not put pressure on you or put you on the spot like other professors do. Shows interesting and very helpful videos that help with lectures. Professor Byrne made me see history from a different point of view. Im very glad i took him for History 1!!! No regrets!
Easy class if you do the reading. Prof is nice and grades fair. Exams are written/uploaded essay papers that you can obviously use text books, lectures, and internet to research and write. Easy participation on discussion board each week, plus write short paragraphs defining terms or subjects he assigns.
This was the worse class I've taken. All his exams are in essay form and the way he grades them is a killer! I did everything he asked for in the essays, yet he still manages to take off some points over something that wasn't important! My first C EVER in SMC. Find a better teacher!
Took his 6 week class. His lectures are really interesting. No homework, just 4 tests in essay form. He doesn't use the textbook but I would recommend getting it anyway so you have extra info to put in your essays. He's really nice and happy to answer students questions!
Just finished his six week history 1 course. Would really recommend this professor to everyone. Only had two simple quizzes and two exams. Very interesting lectures and really learned a lot! Always looked forward to class. Very simple and easy. Just show up and take good notes. One of my favorite classes I've taken in college. Great professor.
Good professor, easy A. Do all the work, listen attentively in class and you will get an A.
Great Professor, Attend, Take Notes, Participate = A
Straightforward oratory lecture, take notes. Two easy multiple choice quizzes. In-class midterm essay, make sure you use good notes to include all applicable information. Two typed essays for final. Every point counts for this class, so just remember to take good notes.
I wish internatioanl students could not take his class. He speaks English really fast. He gives reviews before taking tests. Actually, I wrote everything on the tests what he suggested, but he gave me a bad score. I have no idea how he grades. This class might be easy to Americans, but the class is hard for international students. I got a B score..
Awesome class. 100 points the whole semester, 2 quizzes, a midterm a final and a couple of short writing assignments. Pay attention to what he says in class and follow the lecture notes, so you do have to attend class. This is the first history class I have taken and enjoyed.
go to class study and you will be fine
the work load is easy but because of that theres not much room for badscores, there is no extra credit and this class messed up my GPA, IF you have to take it but I wouldn't retake
It bewilders me that he is getting average scores because he is "too hard." Are you kidding me? ALL you have to do is pay attention, take notes, and revise them for any exam. His lectures are amazing, and if you're not that great at history, good - he breaks it down anyways. Love his class. I'd take every history one offered.
I had Mr Byrne as a sub and then as full time teacher for winter session. So glad I took him during winter, he made my schedule manageable. He is all about lecture so take notes! He's pretty young and funny, makes class more interesting! He is definitely the best looking teacher I've had at smc!
What really impressed me about David Byrne was his lectures. He never looked at his notes during class and just described history in great detail as a compelling narrative. He constantly repeated that exact dates were not important, just the causes and impacts of events. Quizzes were easy, essay tests were quite difficult.
great easy class
Prof Byrne online history 1 course is super easy. Theres only 4 things due. keyterms, midterm, discussions every week & the final. Be prepared if you take this class becuase it is all writing based. Theres no tests, quiz's or anything. But i promise it's so much easier the way he does it. Its an easy A if u do the work, and actually try. take him!!
Professor Byrnes is a great teacher. He makes history fun and entertaining. I recommend taking his class.
The entire class period is lecture based, but its kind of like he't telling a story so its not boring. If you don't take notes on what he says then the tests/quiz's will be hard. Sometimes he'll show you a movie/clip from the history channel. Be on time. Not a lot of homework, 3 papers and tests and quizes. He's not an easy A but definitel not hard
Very easy!!! He makes history interesting and tells you what is going to be in the quiz/test. 2 quizzes, 2 essays, 1 midterm, and final. Take him!!!
Alright the thing is I liked his class a good amount but he is really inflexible when it comes to grades. Missed a quiz because of some unfortunate circumstances and got half credit for it but BAM thats already minus 7% of the total grade a really big hit. Near the end of the semester I asked if there was anyway to improve my grade. Answer was NO.
Class was very easy as long as you study your notes. There were 3 quizzes, 3 writing assignments, and a final paper. It was important to go to class everyday because his lectures were basically what would be on the quizzes. You don't need the textbook because it wasn't used at all.
He is a great teacher, very nice, fair and caring. There is only 100 points the whole semester. There is no room to miss an assignment or score low, if you do it will be hard to earn an A. The class is lecture based and you need to pay attention because the test reflects the lecture.
I loathed his class. Its not difficult, but hes VAGUE about what he wants, which makes things difficult. He is perceived as a chill professor but hes a tough grader. He has HIGH expectations from your midterm, final and key terms. You dont really know what he wants. All he says is use the book, lecture notes and discussion posts.
All you really have to do is take good notes. Interesting lectures that are understandable. He gives the possible exam questions ahead of time. Lots of writing, so be aware of that.
He rarely grades things on time, so you don't know your grade in the class. He is a very harsh grader and doesn't seem like he cares if you do well in the class or not
This was my first online class. It was pretty basic. There are deadlines each week. Lots of reading and writing. Everything is pretty much open book and note which is good. I am not really a fan of history, but this class was okay. If you have to take History 1, this is probably a good one.
Very knowledgable professor. You have to go to class to pass as the quizzes are all on things he speaks about in lectures. Will tell you what the subject is but it is up to you to take good notes and study. Three "quizzes" worth 15% each, 3 writing assignments worth 5%, and a final worth 30%. He makes the class interesting and I highly recommend.
I think that he should be more involved with his students. Especially when he is teaching an online class. I do not see any interaction. We are just assigned what to read and the discussion. I like professors that engage with their students because they make you want to work harder and stay motivated.
The online class is pretty straight forward and basic. There are readings, discussions and key terms you have to define each week. The tests are a combination of multiple choice and essays. Just make sure you complete the assignments on times because I turned in an assignment late and was docked some points.
I had Hist 2 with him this semester and he is a very good lecturer, especially for an 8am class. This class is really just an overview of general history you're taught in high school, pretty easy. He doesn't use Canvas so you either have to keep track of your grade/go to office hours. Make sure to study for quizzes. I got a B due to one low score.
I took his class last spring and loved it. Professor Byrne makes history interesting because he tells it like a story. Normally I think history is boring, but this class changed my mind, even though it was an 8 am class. I ended up with an A. Just make sure to go to class.
Just finished his summer online class. It's one of those class where its lots of work some weeks, very little others. The assignments are readings, lecture notes some multiple chocie quizzes, key terms and essays. Make sure to get high scores on the key terms because they are easy. The quizzes and tests weren't too bad. Recommended for online.
I took his six week summer class. Class load was manageable. There are a few short essays, some quizzes and a final exam. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I would recommend going to class as much as you can. Interesting lectures.
The online summer class starts out easy, but then there is a ton of work at the end of the semester. Be sure not to wait until the end to finish everything, or you will be swamped like I was. The tests are easy. They are open note and book, so you can just look up the answers.
I was so bummed COVID interrupted the on campus class and required it to go online. His in-person lectures were really interesting. Online just didn't match.
I took this class online and I found that there were volumes of work to be done every week. The professor emphasizes detail, so you must be careful when submitting discussions, essays, and key terms. Overall, this class was pretty interesting. However, it requires a lot of time and attention to detail in order to receive a good grade.
There are no zoom meetings for this class, but it still works. The lecture notes are uploaded online. The tests are open book. You only have 15 minutes to complete it. Everything is pretty straightforward though. Overall, I would recommend if you have to take a history class.
I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Byrne's class. Yes it was difficult, but it challenged me to truly learn what I was reading. History is typically my least favorite subject but his lectures made it enjoyable. I found the structure of his class to be thoughtful and insightful.
Online flexible summer 6 week course: the class seems like the work load is light at first but the class becomes more demanding as the semester progresses and the work will easily pile up if youre not on top of it. Make sure to do your key terms every week. The information is valuable. The Professor answers messages quickly.
His lectures make dense material easier to understand. 2 quizzes but they're TIMED 15 min, and they aren't that hard but read the lectures and textbook chapters required because finding them in quizlet isn't easy. He grades kind of hard and barely assigns anything so every assignment impacts grade a lot! Midterm and final are both essays.
Excellent Professor! Really need to take history notes, read a lot for quizzes, and write good essay for final exam.
Excellent professor, great man.
I took History 2 in the fall. Class was okay, you can get by. I had one bad grade that tanked my grade for a bit. but he gave ma an A. You're graded on literally 6 things For the final, which is the same as the midterm (a paper), his instructions can be vague.
To do well in this class you need to do the reading and pay attention and UNDERSTAND what he is talking about. I saw a lot of people who had trouble keeping up.
He doesn't use canvas so you must keep track of your grade. This was one of the easiest classes ive ever taken. He mentions exactly what will be on quizzes so you know what to study (which is typically unnecessary) and grades extremely generously on papers. Textbook is totally unnecessary unless you miss classes. Clearly he doesn't care as well.
Great teacher! His fully online classes are pretty easy and easy to keep up with! Definitely recommend
Professor David Byrne requires that you write 25 paragraphs every couple of weeks, for key terms. These paragraphs must be 6 sentences long, and often pertain to irrelevant topics. I think thats enough said.
Easy class if you do the work. Theres only 4 things due, keyterms, midterm, discussions every week & the final. Be prepared if you take this class because it is a lot of writing. Definitely recommend.
I would have given David a 5 except that his class was TOO EASY. David certainly gives interesting and engaging lectures. However, there is very little work required. There are a few essays that are fairly easy and a couple of quizzes as well. Overall learned a lot but could have learned more.
First off, Byrne doesn't know how to use computers, so if you need to send him an email forget about it. His lectures are fairly boring and service level. He also is very openly biased against communism and for classical liberalism. However, the class is really easy if you pay attention and do all of the critical thinking assignments.
This was an interesting class. Byrne will tell you all the information needed to take the exams, so make sure you pay attention to that. His lectures are fairly clear and easy to understand. He doesn't ramble like so many other professors! I recommend. I want to take his online class next.
