His comments can be a little talk...ative ad naus...eum
dramatic
a bit eccentric, but his classes are great.. A very smart man!
Interesting, but not always helpful
i get the impression that he THINKS his class is really great, but its not
insanely intelligent, VERY well read. has hard time stooping to students level.
Hopefully the only time they ever offer this class...boring three hour lecture..way too dramatic...pointless...dreaded ever class

responsive, patient, helpful. terrific lecturer. takes course material to another level.
Very animated, easy to pay attention to. Really passionate. HARD tests. Cute little man, reminds me of Santa Clause.
unclear; hard tests; biggest waste of time; learned nothing about religions just his ideals
never want him again

SO intellegent, but in all honesty, I didnt learn anything about religion. Took us until the last 5 weeks to get into any kinda of religion.Waste of time, he should be doing research somewhere. I felt soo lost at times.
Dr. Cain's class was awesome. I learned so much about different cultures. Going to class is like going to a one-man show starring an incredibly brilliant man.
Brillant man but lecturing takes some getting used to. Draws from variety of sources, DO THE READING! Hard at first but stick with it, it's a worthwhile experience.
frustrating..he doesn't teach, just rants.he seems smart enough, just not a good teacher. don't take this class if you want facts and dates...i recommend auditing it but not taking it.
I have had Cain for two classes now and he is the most intersting man I have ever met. However, only take his course pass fail, because it is a GPA smasher!
Brillant man! Just don't get him started on Kirkegard!!! He could never pronounce my name correctly, yet insisted that his pronunciation was correct. Firmament of Time is lame. He is trying to bind us back to God.
hated this class and even though i tried very hard and attended religoulsy he was no help and got even more stubborn. totally wrthless intro class, im sorry i thought i was going to actually learn a little about many religions but ended with a bad grade

Insanely hard. Has no conception of what a 100 level class should entail. Only take pass/fail or audit. I had planned on taking more religion classes but he cured me of that!
Very one sided. Worships Kierkegaard, and very intelligent on the philosopher, but is not very keen on those who object to his worldview (e.g. Aquinas on suffering and evil). Very unhelpful to male students as well, which was extremely frustrating.
I highly recommend this class with Dr. Cain. He's inspiring and enthusiastic! I loved his class. His tests come from his lectures; the final is hard.
He's a really good teacher and a nice guy. Definitely take his intro class.
he's very enthusiastic and he makes some interesting points and he's entertaining to listen to, but sometimes it's hard to determine when you should be taking notes and when he's just going off on a tangent.
Ah, Dr. Cain. Very intelligent, veteran lecturer, and interesting fellow all around. One could learn quite a bit from him... if he were to structure his courses more responsibly. He might do well by writing a book.
I took his Suffering & Evil class, and it was hard. Very good class, it really makes you think, and he's really nice if you approach him after class to discuss things, but definitely take his class pass/fail.
Has no idea how to teach a 10o level very interesting but tests are imposible im a seinor and am having problems passing this class
Simply mind blowing lectures that make you think even out of class. Dr. Cain is very enthusiastic about his classes, but his tests require almost transcript like notes.
I found Dr. Cain's classes very interesting and not too difficult if you follow the lectures and do the reading.
Anything He writes on the board is on the test, including: Theologians, latin/greek words, definitions. but thats it. I found him very interesting, but bring a Mountain Dew just in case.
Very helpful if you go in to get help but lectures are usually not organized and hard to follow. No textbooks either. Very smart professor but doesn't explain in a clear way.
Wow. His class is incredibly difficult. Unless you speak Latin, Greek and German and enjoy ambiguity, do NOT take this class. He is very witty and enjoyable at time, and I must admit that he is easy on the eyes, but the tests are impossible, and there are only 3 grades for the entire semester.
lectures are very hard to follow; not organized at all; going to class is essential because the tests focus a lot on terms and quotations he gives in class
Some of the best lectures on campus.
Pass/fail was invented because of Dr. Cain. Wear a helmet.
As a Christian,I have to tell you not to take the RELG117 class. Its almost impossible(and hes very angsty regarding God)!He goes off SO MANY TANGENTS and you have many pages of notes that arent on the test. His tests related alittle to the material he taught. He had to curve every test so MANY points.
cain is incredible. a-mazing. but you need to be a good student.
great lectures but man are his tests hard. He's tough but if you want to learn...a lot...then this is the teacher 4 u.
This dude is hard! His tests are out of this world but his lectures are kinda fun to watch. He will hook you up with a huge curve come grading time. Long story short, if you put in the hours you will get a decent grade.
How could anyone not love him? His are the only classes I actually look forward to and the only classes I dare to sit up front for. He is reason enough to major in Religion. Most fascinating person I've ever met.
I love prof cain, he is one of the greatest religion profs. his classes are really really hard but worth it because you get to listen to his lectures
His class is extremely hard, but he's a good prof. just be sure to study a whole lot for his tests and still expect just a B
His lectures were interesting, if a little off topic from time to time. His exams are not easy. In fact, they are quite very difficult.
An amazing class, not anywhere near as difficult as people make it out to be. Cain is the reason I didn't transfer last semester/restored my faith in Mary Washington faculty
it was like sitting through a church sermon 3 times a week. i think he used to be a minister. bring a lot of coffee and don't except to be involved in any discussion because, much like church, you don't get to talk. don't recommend.
One of the best professors at UMW. For as hard as he expects his students to work, he works equally hard to provide excellent lectures. He's brilliant, and he cares about his students and their progress. Sure he may be "tough," but that's college, folks. If you can't take a little criticism, leave UMW.
Cain is the worst professor I have ever had at Mary Washington. He is confusing and closed minded. I learned nothing of world religions and all about his rambling philosophies. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You will regret it. He is also the most unhelpful professor I have ever had. When asked for direction he basically gave me none.
his class is frustrating because it's so hard to understand what he's aiming at when he talks.
I loved this class, even though I'm a science major. I took it just for fun, and was lucky that it turned out to be an easy A. Just go to class, all his test material comes from lecture notes, and the exams are almost all multiple choice. This was my favorite class last semester.
He's a little hard to follow at times, and does get sidetracked pretty easily. However, all his lectures are very interesting and have really enlightened me. Defintely take this class if you have any interest in religion.
This class is so hard but worth it if you are interested in it. He is brilliant and gives awsome lectures(though he gets sidetracked). His tests are killer but he curves a bit. I dont know anyone who thinks this class is easy but if you study a lot and come to class you will at least get a B. Dont take this for gen ed. 3 tests no papers/projects
This was a great class. If you want classes to fluff your GPA, it's probably not the one for you. Dr. Cain is one of the best professors I have ever had! Thoroughly enjoyed his lectures, very intelligent, can be sidetracked at times (but in a good way). Definitely learned a lot. Grading wise the tests can be tough and three make up your whole grade

HORRIBLE.
Not made for atheists/otherwise non religious people. Period. Referred to vague points in religions CONSTANTLY. His lectures were here and there and then WHAM, I constantly thought I was learning about Buddhism when I was learning about Hinduism. Take pass/fail. He is smart, yes. I would definitely go hear him speak-- just not for a grade.
Cain is a smart person. However, he is a horrible professor. He cannot communicate his knowledge to the class and makes no sense to any one who is not a genius. He might as well teach the class in Greek.
He is very disjointed in teaching, and his tests are nit-picky. He asks about one-liners that he said in lecture, or asks about some quote. His questions are very specific, and make very obscure references. Worthless class.
He rules!
Worst professor at Mary Washington. Worst teacher I have ever had in my life.
This man is absolutely brilliant, but if you are expecting an easy class then don't take it. His tests really aren't that hard... just take good notes and LISTEN in class. He has some incredible things to say... and although you have to study fairly hard for tests, it's not much work other than that.
I read the comments before I signed up for this class and figured people were just exaggerating and it would be okay. I was wrong. So wrong. I studied relentlessly, and even went to him for help, but it will be a miracle if I wind up with a B. The tests are extremely specific and near impossible, but at least he curves. GPA ruiner. Take it P/F.
The classes are all lecture, so its a little hard to pay attention, but read the assigned readings and it clears up any questions. Be careful on the tests... There is a lot of information presented in class but only a small portion shows up on the test. Things that seem unimportant end up coming back to haunt you.
I took 5 courses with Dr. Cain in college. He's incredible. I certainly didn't get As in all his classes. But he's a great professor, and a wonderful person.
"His comments can be a little talk...ative ad naus...eum" That quote from another rating sums up his lectures. The cadence of his voice really is like sitting in church, it is very stop and go and EXTREMELY hard to follow. He is a very nice man and very passionate, but weeks into the course I had no idea what I was actually supposed to know.
Dr. Cain's Intro to world religions was the worst class I ever took in my life. He ruined my GPA. I went to him for help, I got more confused. I wanted to drop the class, but I couldn't. His class won't help you learn about religion, it will just confused you... a lot.
I had Dr. Cain for several classes...I got all A's, but I was also extremely interested in the material. He is one of the most interesting/entertaining lecturers at UMW and everyone should at least take one class with him, just for the experience, even if it's only P/F. He isn't always the most helpful or approachable though.
At first I thought he was completely insane, but now I know he's just brilliant! He is a little quirky, but it keeps things interesting. His lectures can be quite cryptic, but if you memorize what he says in class, you'll do great on tests. Make sure you study any terms he writes ont he board, they're always on the test!
Nobody nailed Cain's essence better than the one who said he would mispronounce student's name and claim his pronunciation was the correct one. But he is a highly knowledgeable and talented prof, making him worth taking. If he had the humility to be a truly transcendent thinker, he'd be everything he appears to be.
Well he is the nicest man ever but do NOT take this class if you don't need it. His lectures are like sermons: long and dull (he is a reverend of something) and the tests ask for the most random details. Its pretty hard to know what to take notes on and its a dull class considering the title of the course.
AMAZING professor, yet hard as hell! I am not a religion major, and my grade in his class will probably bring down my GPA, but I wouldnt change taking his class for the world. DO NOT pass up taking one of his classes, audit it if you are not a religion major. If you go to UMW you should take at least one of his classes before you graduate!
He tells great stories, and his class is interesting. His tests are extremely hard, though...you could probably right down every word and still get a low B. I liked him, but it was a struggle to get a low B!
A very nice and funny guy. The grade depends only on the tests, but I didn?t have any problems with them. The tests pretty much all came from the notes in class so make sure you take thorough ones. Also you don?t really have to read the books but I found it very useful if you did.
My experiences in Professor Cain's Intro to World Religion's course opened my eyes to what is necessary to succeed in UMW. I didn't get a good grade in the course because I didn't know what to take notes on but the lectures were amazing. I will retake his class to improve my GPA and advice (Bring a voice recorder to help your notes).
I went to Catholic School for 12 years of my life and took this thinking it would be an easy A but this man is impossible. Nothing he ever talks about relates to anything I ever learned about Christianity and his lectures are so boring. I tried to take as many notes as I could but when it came to his tests, nothing I studied appeared on them. AWFUL
The people who are complaining about Dr. Cain just can't handle the pressure! This class wasn't nearly as interesting or simple as I'd figured it would be, but I definitely learned a lot. I am taking another class with him next semester. I wouldn't declare in religion just because of him, but I think everyone should take at least 1 class w/him.
I came into CT not having any background in Christianity, which I thought would slow me down and it most certainly did but it was still really awesome. Write down everything he says. Everything. Absolutely everything. Go to class everyday. I didn't really agree with everything he had to say, but it's still fascinating as hell. Classic professor.
Cain is an absolute character and my favorite professor, but he takes some getting used to. The cadence of his voice is hypnotic, so don't come to class tired. Take notes on everything. Don't underestimate him--he is brilliant, but can be hard to talk to. He'll take forever to answer any questions, but just wait him out; it's because he's thinking.
I love Prof. Cain! He makes cheesy jokes and will occassionally sing a song from Broadway for you. You don't really need to read the books for this class but it helps you to better understand the class if you do. Take excellent notes and be sure to memorize all of them before a test and you will do fine. Everything he writes on the board is crucial
Attendance isn't mandatory but the test questions come straight from his lectures. If you take good notes, you will do fine on the test. Readings support his lectures and will appear on some questions for the test. Not the easiest class, but definitely not the hardest, and he has a sense of humor!
Awesome guy. I would love for professor Cain to be my Grandfather BUT I WILL NEVER TAKE ANOTHER CLASS WITH HIM AGAIN (and im a religion major). His tests are excruciatingly hard(although do-able). but you will definitely LEARN a LOT.
Best professor I've ever had - man's a genius!
Dr. Cain is hands-down my favorite professor of all. He is BRILLIANT, and he is so charming in a sort of way I can't put my finger on. He sings and tells jokes and makes perfect delivery in his speech - he is AWESOME! Take a class with him just for the sake of getting to learn from him!
Tests come from the lectures, but you must write down every single word he says. He's an interesting and nice fellow, with a sense of humor. Not the hardest class, but definitely not the easiest. I'd recommend taking him if you have an interest in religion.
Dr. Cain expects his students to have total recall on every test he gives. I hated this class with a passion. You have to devote about 80 hrs a week to get a good grade. I recommend never taking a class with him. The one time I asked for a study guide, he ridiculed me in front of the class saying his class didn't need one.
Professor Cain's intro course, I would have to say, is on the more difficult end of the scale of intro-level courses. While the information is interesting and the lectures are entirely relevant, his tests are very difficult. I turned my notes into flashcards and memorized them and still could only pull off C's. Very interesting course though!
I took this class as an elective, but it turned out to be one of my favorites. This man is as close in demeanor to Albus Dumbledore as you're ever likely to get.
Professor Cain is a very good teacher, just take good notes in his class and you'll do fine. He's a very quirky and sweet, but I think a lot of people just don't get his humor. I advise people to listen to his lectures and really think them over- he's not going to give you all the answers outright. Also make sure to study your vocabulary.
I loved Professor Cain. He is a brilliant and funny older guy who will remind you of an awesome grandpa. He literally seems to know everything. He will test you on everything he talked about, so pay attention and take good notes. Everything he repeats and/or writes on the board is very important. If you want to really learn, take class with him.
Professor Cain is really funny in class, but his class itself is by no means easy. He teaches differently, making you remember everything he has said. The first part of the class (literally the first 1 and a half) is spent just talking about what religion is. However, the class is interesting once you get into learning about actual religions.
Dr. Cain is very interesting once you learn how to listen to him. If you study up, listen well and GO TO CLASS (texts aren't used thaaaat much) you should be fine. Very interesting subjects and his sense of humor is glorious if you can catch it! I'd love to have him again as a prof. Very easy class work-wise. Recommend!
interesting subject, sometimes difficult to pay attention in class. overall he is very good at what he does and if you show up to class and study you will do fine.
You will succeed if you take good notes. He doesn't really provide you with any lecture notes. You'll have to write down almost everything he says as he goes along. Exams not that hard. Good-hearted granpa :)
I had Dr Cain in the late 1980s, and while his expectations were high, he was the best professor I had at MWC, period. Amazing.
DO NOT take this class for an easy A. It's a GPA killer. If you are a religion major, learning from Dr. Cain will pay off, but only if you do all of the readings thoroughly and study HARD. Lectures are difficult to follow and impossible if you haven't done the reading. Cain is always glad to answer questions, extremely intelligent, very passionate.
Professor Cain definitely knows what he's talking about, but the problem is that no one else does. He is confusing and does not clarify anything. This class is under the Religion department, but is VERY HEAVILY based on theological principles. Be prepared to study ALL NIGHT for his tests, although he does curve a lot. Hardest class I've ever taken.
Professor Cain is one of the most thoughtful and articulate human beings I have ever met. His integrity and candor are unequaled. He teaches students to engage the material rather than memorize it. Linear and/or lazy minded students might find his lectures rather difficult. Think layers, webs and spirals...
This class is NOT for freshman. I took it thinking it was going to be an easy gen ed credit and was so wrong. If fact, statistically (this from a academic advising) he fails 98% of his freshman. Cain is not a good teacher, his lectures are all talk and words scribbled on the board in chalk. Books are useless, he doesn't use them on the tests.
Professor Cain is super nice and clearly passionate. However, he is very hard to follow in his lectures. It's like he speaks in riddles and I just never knew what he was talking about. You can study all night but the tests still make no sense. Again, he is a very nice guy buy if I were you I would definitely not take this class.
They don't make 'em like that anymore! Dr Cain's lecture were simply on another level. Loved his passion, engagement, and performative presence in the classroom. He's a tough grader and indeed his tests are obscure and arcane. However, what you do learn, you will LEARN. He's not easy or user friendly, but his depth and history are HIGH QUALITY.
