This professor devotes EVERYTHING to his teaching, and knows almost everything. Even though I wasn't very interested in the class, he did an excellent job teaching. Lectures REALLY help out for the tests.

If you don't like tricky multiple choice tests, this class is not for you. You must go to class and do the readings or the class will be a struggle. Otherwise the prof. is really nice and really knows the subject.

He is an amazing teacher and really makes the once boring topic of government and political science interesting. Keep up with readings and go to office hours with questions. He's very helpfull. Amazing guy, definately take this class!

Professor Canon is a cool guy. If youre going to take this class, DO THE READINGS. ALL OF THEM. Your screwed if you dont. He does a good job at making the class as interesting as it possibly can be. He is very helpful. In a class of over 300, he still takes time out to see if anyone has questions.

Amazing professor! Incredibly willing to help anyone and responds quickly and clearly to any questions in emails. This class is tough, so be prepared to spend hours in the library before exams, but an A is possible. I highly!! recommend Professor Canon!! He has the cutest personality!

Prof. Canon really did make the class interesting. Coming from someone who didn't know a whole lot about politics before, I really enjoy it now. And almost everything is relevant in issues that you see in the news today. Hard work but worth it.

He's a good professor. He knows what he is doing. He is friendly and he takes the time to answer questions. There is A LOT of reading, but the readings help you understand the lectures/discussions.

I've never met anyone who didn't love this guy. He makes class interesting, and I still don't know what party he belongs to. You should probably go to class, becuase half the test material comes from lecture. I think the tests are fair and if you put in the time you WILL get a good grade, but that means you should study!!!

You couldn't ask for a better professor than Dave Canon. Not only is he a sweetheart and makes you feel like your Dad is teaching lecture, but he is amazingly smart and unbiased. He is throughly prepared for lecture with power points, has his TAs whipped- correcting exams in record time, and will brighten your day with politics! A+!

Absolutely FANTASTIC. You couldn't ask for a better professor. He knows what he's talking about, gives EXCELLENT review sheets, and is just an overall great guy. Lectures are well organized and he puts his notes online ahead of time so you can add extra notes to them in class. He's bloody fantastic.

Definatly Definatly go to his review session... possibly the most helpful thing in the world as well as your TA's can be very helpful. He and his Ta's make sure to be avaliable and offer alot of exra office hours when it comes down to the test. He will explain this and if they are unclear as and he will help. Very willing to help

Very clear lectures and online lecture outline provided. Fantastic speaker who engages class (and mine was like 150-175 students). Tests, Paper difficult, but expectations are clear-never any ambiguity or guesswork. Take him if you can!

Canon is excellent. His lectures are clear and he is always willing to help you out. The exams can be a little difficult, but if you study you should do well. His TA's are also helpful and make themselves available during exam weeks. See if you can get David R. as your TA.

Exams are pretty hard and he likes to give review sheets that require you to type 30+ pages on your own just to have an idea of what will be on the exam. He loves to sport bow ties and the class helps you understand politics. Be prepared to study your ass off for BC's and expect lots of reading to do.

This man really knows his stuff. He is very personable. Power lectures can be a little intense, especially because he only pauses to take a drink of water. No papers, only exams (with short essay questions). Really great professor. Would take him again.

Great teacher, REALY KNOWS HIS STUFF! He has written and edited many books, including one of out textbooks. Loves to answer any questions either during lecutre or outside of class. Tests are hard, but can be studied for and there are no papers.

Professor Canon really knows his stuff, but if you aren't politically minded, you're screwed. I'd suggest doing some outside reading if this is the case (if you're required to take it for your major as I was). The exams are really hard, but both professor Canon and the TAs are there to help. Still, it's a pretty hard class if you're inexperienced.

This class was easily my favorite this semester. Prof Canon is really likeable. He's got a decent sense of humor and he explains things well. The textbook reading (The Enduring Debate) can get a little long and complicated, but discussion usually helps to clear up any confusion.

I've never posted on this website every before, but students need to know how great Prof. Canon really is. Canon is the most knowledgeable, friendly professor I've ever had. This guy is a total rock star. He even brought donuts to our 7:45am final! The class is a lot of reading and a lot of material, but well worth it.

He cares a lot, but his lectures were pretty boring. He tried to make things clear and as easy as possible. I didn't do any extra work and came out with a B. If you can find a better professor teaching the course, do it, but Canon isnt too difficult. He's a really nice guy.

Professor Canon is a wonderful man who clearly loves his job. He is pleasant, easy to understand, and just an all around great guy. He brought doughnuts to the final exam for everyone! I would recommend Professor Canon to anyone interested in political science.

He is an incredible teacher. He knows his stuff AND how to teach. I never thought this subject would interest me but he got me to love it. His tests are very tough (esp. the multiple choice portion), and it's really important to read and study the Enduring Debate articles (which he helped to edit). Go to lecture, he clears a lot of things up!

Unnecessarily difficult. Ridiculous amounts of reading to do and you must absorb it all for his midterm and final. Great professor. Tons of reading, but you'll do well if you skim the reading and pay close attention in lecture. His textbook is very interesting if you get a chance to read it. He's also very helpful after class and over e-mail. The examples he gives in lecture really help you understand the intricacies of the laws in question.

David Canon was the most excitable professor I've ever had. He loves teaching, getting his students excited about politics, and will answer any question in the middle of lecture. Be prepared for tons of reading, though, but the tests are fair and if you do the work you'll be fine. Don't be afraid to go to office hours.

Canon obviously really likes teaching and the subject he teaches. That said, 75 minute lectures can get long, but still better than most power lectures. He wrote the book, so going to lecture and reading often give you the exact same info, but I think he's very good at relating somewhat hard topics to his audience and the class was fair if u study

Canon wrote the textbook and assigns lots of reading. Very passionate and intelligent but 75 minute lectures can be somewhat boring. Good intro to American government, just do the reading and attend class and you'll be fine.

Overwhelming amount of reading to do, DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!! Canon gives interesting lectures and is obviously a genius in his field, although power lectures do get boring. Exams are somewhat difficult, but fair as there is so much material to learn

Nicest man you will ever meet. He's incredibly smart in his field, but knows how to make it clear to people who aren't government experts. He's really helpful during class if you ask questions and is really helpful during office hours. There is a ton of reading, but tests are fairly easy if you read the books.

He is a badass. I loved him as a prof even though poli sci isn't my thing. Expect to work hard, but it's not impossible.

Lectures made topics easier to understand, but would not be necessary if you did the readings. Tests are not hard as long as you read the books. I was not interested in poli sci at all before this class, but I enjoyed learning about it with this professor.

American Gov isn't the most exciting of topics for many people, but Professor Canon kept it interesting and clear. A lot of reading. Exams are fair (MC and short answer.)

DTC while boring knows what he is talking about, even if you hate political science, you will learn a lot in his class.

David Cannon is the definition of a baller and shot caller. Class should be mandatory for everyone at this university. His tests aren't easy but fair, study hard and you will get an A.

Best Professor by far I have had. Passionate about Poli Sci and really engages the class well for a power lecture. A lot of reading though, so getting an A will require a decent amount of work. Book and lecture are similar, but there's a few things in each not in the other, so look over both.

Canon is an absolute expert and knows how to teach the material. Lectures aren't the most exciting, but are always organized, clear, and useful. Daily news discussion, loves answering student questions, and extremely friendly during office hours. Midterm and final are MC/short answer/essay and a 10 page paper. One of the best professors out there!

He obviously loves what he does, it is hard to not get into class when he is speaking so passionately. Lectures are kind of boring but his attitude makes them so much better. Strongly recommend him, and as long as you understand the study guide exams are not bad at all.

I loved this class with Canon. He is very clear and explains things well. There is a ton of reading, but it is not essential to know it in depth, so skimming or reading the abstracts before articles is enough. He also provides a detail review sheet with everything that will be on each test. And no homework besides reading.

Great professor who obviously loves what he does. Was completely unbiased on issues when discussing the current state of our government even though Madison is a very liberal city. Nice not to have views pushed on me

David was the best professor I have had during my time at Madison. He is very passionate about the material and really wants his students to succeed. Lecture was very interesting and the textbook was extremely well written and easy to read. Overall I recommend this class taught by Prof. Canon to anyone.

Professor Canon is extremely knowledgeable in the subject he teaches. He's unbiased and is funny at times, but his power lectures are pretty dry. Exams are fair. For essays, make sure you talk about why the topic is important. Review sessions are extremely helpful, his and the TAs'. I respected Canon more than any professor I've ever had.

If you go to class and take good notes, you will do well. I only skimmed the readings and read the bolded text in the textbook. Memorize terms before the test. The small amount of extra credit there is is only based on lecture material. He is great at lecturing and knows how to make class fascinating. PARTICIPATE IN DISCUSSION.

I love having Professor Canon for this class. He is very helpful, very knowledgable and you can tell he truly enjoys what he does. His review sessions are very helpful because he lets you ask any questions that you may have about the exam. One of the best professors I've had here, he definitely takes pride in what he does!

Read the textbook and read the extra red one. Lectures are dry and boring, and im a poli sci major. Very knowledgeable. He tells you what you should no for the test and you have a research paper too. My TA was terrible, so dont be afraid to switch sections

Professor Canon is extremely helpful. He gives study guides for all tests, they are long, but still helpful. Lots of reading, but if you keep up and study hard for midterms and finals off of the study guide you will be fine. He is actually really funny at times, super nice, helpful, and crazy smart.

I absolutely love Dave! He is very passionate about politics. He is extremely helpful and gives you the coursemidtermfinal expectations in organized review sheets. His lectures are long sometimes, but interesting and relevant. Attend lecture and disscussion, do the readingshomework, study, and you will be fine. Canon also has a great humor!

This class has a ton of reading that you're going to want to do all of. The tests are tough, but if you do all of the homework (100 pages of reading a week) and take good notes you will set yourself up for success. Definitely required a ton of effort but you will learn a ton about American government. Highly recommend if you're ready for the work.

Canon is an outstanding professor. Makes the power lecture interesting and knows his stuff. Tough class. Put in the effort and you'll get a good grade. Weekly short writings depending on your TA. 3 exams, with MC and IDs. A lot of reading throughout the course. Study a lot and it will pay off. Don't get behind.

Professor Canon was a good professor. His lectures were long. Although one could very easily get a very high score without attending lecture, there are a few tidbits that are picked up for tests. Must do all the readings. Tests are spelling out on the study guide. Study guides are long though, I recommend making a google doc with others.

Reading from the two textbooks (about 100 pages a week) is essential to getting a good grade. The lecture outlines are posted online, but it doesn't go into the detail that Prof. Canon does in lecture. It's not necessary to come in with vast knowledge of American politics to get a good grade. Great professor overall.

Go to lecture because he adds a lot of commentary along with the slides that will be ontest. Assigns aa TON of reading. I didn't do it and got an AB, but I'm sure it would help a lot with exams/wouldn't need to go to lecture then maybe. Grade is literally just tests and discussion attendance. Professor is very nice.

Dr. Canon is a great professor! The class requires a lot of reading which is what a lot of the discussions are based off of, and where a few test questions come from. He's clearly very knowledgable in his field, and great at answering questions and clarifying. Good class for learning about gov. and what's going on in the world!

Canon is a standup guy & great professor! He's very organized, informative, and he gives out really good study guides. Even though this is a politics class, he keeps it objective, showing no political favoritism. There is a lot of reading, but if you follow the politics, you'll understand most of it beforehand. Make sure you also read TED!

I loved PS104. It's what made me decide to be a Political Science major. There is a ton of reading but much of it is reiterated in lecture. The readings are important for being able to participate in discussion. Take this class as a Comm B if you're a poli sci major. It's the only Comm B within the major and it's fascinating.

I'm a French student and with this class, I have learned a lot about American Politic and Government. I definitely loved this course ! The textbooks are really interesting, and easy to understand with current examples for each chapter. Mr Canon is very competent and is passionate about political science. He is willing to help his students.

Canon is a fantastic Professor there is really no debate about that. Extremely organized, lectures stay on point and you can tell he's just a good guy. Widely considered one of the better Political Science minds in the Big Ten.

David Canon is probably one of the best professors I have had at this school! He is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about politics, it's almost impossible to not enjoy his lectures. There is a ton of reading, but most of it is very interesting. The exams are relatively easy as long as you keep up on the readings and attend lectures.

For a political class (especially during the election) he was extremely objective and gave awesome lectures. He was always interesting to listen to and kept the class engaging by incorporating a lot of current events and real life examples. Definitely recommend him and this class.

While American Politics is a very broad subject matter for a one semester class, Canon's lectures always helped clarify information that may have been ambiguous in the reading. Professor Canon inspired me to want to major in Political Science when I had him my first semester Freshman year. I absolutely loved his class - he is very much respected and is a clear, insightful, and intelligent person. The tests are straightforward - not easy, but very fair. Reading is manageable. If you have the chance, take his class!

Ps 104 was way easier than I expected. Canon gives very detailed lecture outlines so you really only have to go to the discussion once a week. He also gives very long and detailed study guides which are very helpful if you do them but they aren't graded. I probably opened the textbook once and got an A so if you study for the exams you'll be fine

I've studied in 4 different countries, and Canon is one of the best professors I've ever had. Great lectures even if you don't know much about politics, and really helpful in office hours too. Exams & the grading in general are fair tough to get an A though, but possible if you work very hard & show some commitment beyond coursework. He's great.

Professor Canon was great - his lectures were to the point and taught pretty much exactly what would be on the test. If you stay on top of the readings and attend most of the lectures, the tests will be fairly easy for you. Keep your discussion worksheets, as they're useful to study from, and attend the review sessions before each exam.

Canon is a great lecturer and attending class really helps you understand the material. Some of the TED readings can be confusing, but because section attendance is mandatory, your TA will help a lot. Canon does a fantastic job conveying the information in lecture and reading the textbook isn't exactl necessary unless you're confused about a topic.

Gives great foundation for political science, very applicable in real life. Wrote both of the textbooks, TED is a must read, otherwise lecture covers it. Save time and read chapter outlines that he posts on canvas for textbook. Ask for review sheet early on and take notes on it, all you need to study for exams. TA's helpful! Highly recommend!!

Truly one of the best professors I've ever had. Lectures can seem dull but if you go to them, you don't need to read the textbook (he literally wrote the book so he just uses that info in class). SUPER straightforward with what you need to know. He's also such a nice guy. definitely take.

I loved professor Canon. He was an amazing lecturer and really cares about his students' understanding of the content. He related all of the content to the current time and does a good job of being objective. There is a lot of reading but you only really need the textbook for review, so I would suggest sticking to TED readings.

Professor Canon is really passionate about the material. While attendance is not mandatory, I highly encourage you to go to lecture. For notes print out the outlines ahead of time and fill in on things he talks about to explain these topics. Read the textbook and TED's before lecture. Discussions are heavily based on the TED readings. Amazing class

This class was structured very well and if you attend all lectures and discussions you will learn a lot. The exams were all essays and they were very time-consuming and required a lot of applied thinking. The homework assignments are basically a guaranteed A. Would recommend if you are interested in politics.

Dr. Canon is brilliant & wrote the textbook used for class. I went to every lecture but I only used the textbook for exams. During the week there is not much work, only TED readings and InQuiz quizzes which are basically a guaranteed A. I found the 2 midterm exams to be extremely with 4 essays each & final with 5 & spent hrs on writing them

Professor Canon is such an amazing person. I had a problem getting my textbook shipped overseas and he was able to find a solution for me. He is just so nice and caring. He is very knowledgeable and respected in his field. He wrote the textbook we used too so his lectures were easy to follow through. This class was tough but the prof was worth it!

Prof. Canon is a very respected professor in American politics and is a great prof for the intro class. I would highly recommend taking Canon. During online, our exams were in essay form rather than the normal in-person tests. I thought the essays took much longer and were graded on somewhat unclear criteria but that is my only complaint.

This was a Socratic seminar style class, and despite being a very highly-accredited political scientist, Prof. Canon was so, so nice. He was very receptive to ideas and you can tell he knows so much. The grading criteria is a little unclear at some points, however. He didn't really lecture in this style of class, but I can imagine he would be great

Professor Canon is a very interesting and respectable lecturer and professor. He truly wants you to succeed in his class and offers many opportunities to do well. It is reading heavy but it's a manageable workload.

I love Prof. Canon. Super interesting guy who I talked with a couple times in office hours. 104 is very reading intensive but he goes over all the reading in class. Wouldn't skip lectures, however, he does add onto several things require for the final.

Lectures can be a bit boring, but for an intro level course like this, he really covered as much as he could in a semester without being overwhelming. I could tell in every lecture that he really cared that the students understood what he was saying. The tests are kind of annoying in their format and because of how impactful they were on our grade.

David Cannon is very passionate about his subject and it shows in lecture. The tests are very fair I would say, not trick questions but just very dense. I wouldn't take this class if you just need a humanities credit because it is in no means an easy A and there are much easier humanities credits. I love the professor but is my lowest grade.

You can tell Prof Canon cares a lot about all of the topics he discusses. He is very good at explaining things in a clear and concise way and I loved going to his lectures. He is always available to answer questions and his exams were very fair. Prof Canon is awesome, you know he is truly passionate about his class and what he is teaching.

Professor Canon was a great teacher and very passionate about this subject. He is good at explaining topics and nice to students, willing to help them out during office hours, however, the actual content of the class made this the hardest class for me. It is so dense and theres so much to cover, I love this professor but the class is impossible.

Amazing and knowledgeable professor. This class is very interesting, and you learn a lot. Only take it if you are passionate about the topic because it is a lot of work and requires effort. If you read the textbooks and go to lectures, the midterms will be fair. The final is difficult but graded nicely overall. Great class, but heavy.

Professor Canon is a great professor who is so nice despite being a very accomplished political scientist. His seminar opened my eyes to many injustices in America and I think he did a great job managing this class. I would recommend him to any political science student because he is very knowledgable and understanding.

Canon is super knowledgable, engaging, and just a nice guy. Workload is pretty excessive -- about 60 pages a week (textbook is optional, but supplemental readings aren't). He's a good prof if you really want to learn, but there are easier 104 professors. Regardless, I really enjoyed his class. Only thing is he didn't post lectures online.

Prof Canon is very passionate about election studies and wrote the book for 104 (literally it is his book). There is not much opportunities for online substitutions if you can't attend a class and it is a big time commitment. You will need to put effort and time into readings and studies to get a good grade.

Canon is AWESOME! In the race and politics FIG seminar he leads, his passion for his work is so clear and he knows everything about the stuff he teaches. He is great at leading round-table discussions and will entertain any idea even if he doesn't personally agree. Tons and tons of reading, but most of it is pretty interesting. Great guy

Good man. Canon is a knowledgable guy. The class is graded on the two midterms, a final exam, and discussion participation. That's it. Which is a bit lame, but the class is still solid. I will say, it's a little annoying that it was just another old white man talking about what our government should and shouldn't do, but he does a good job.

I loved having Professor Canon so much. His lectures are great, and he definitely values education rather than research or grades. This class takes some work, but it's not necessarily difficult. The exams are easy to prepare for, as he gives you a list of everything that could be on them. I would for sure recommend this class with Dr. Canon!

Professor Canon is the best poli sci professor I've ever had! He is passionate about what he teaches and his lectures are very informative. He offers study guides that definitely prepare you for the exams and if you do them, study, and read all of the readings you will get an A.

Dr. Canon is the nicest guy. You can tell he absolutely loves what he does. His lectures are clear and he adds in good stories from time to time. He encourages questions and is very responsive. I am sad he is retiring, he is the sweetest little old man.

Professor Canon is the best professor I''ve ever had. He is so passionate about what he teaches and truly goes above & beyond to engage with students. His classes are fairly difficult but are so worth it because you learn a lot & Canon works to ensure students have the opportunity to succeed. I am incredibly sad to hear Professor Canon is retiring.
