Great teacher with great attitude.
A nasty meglomaniac with a definite short person's attitude. Pass on this one unless you like being intimidated and threatened.
TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE OR HE WILL ANSWER IT!!
in general, he is a very laid-back professor, BUT you must never speak when he is speaking, or leave your cell phone on.So if you come to class, do your work, and at least look like your paying attention, you'll get an A
TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE! his class is extremely easy. i got an "A" on every assignment, but didn't learn much. anything i might have learned in his class i forgot within 3 months. but it's an easy A if that's what you want
Well basically I barely attended class and I dont even rember doing work except for a group project and I got an A. It was a very easy class, especially if you don't really care very much about the history of music. MAKE SURE YOUR CELL PHONE IS OFF!
Guitar was ok. I dropped out because I kept getting A's on the quizes, but I still didn't know how to play guitar. He's an easy teacher, but I don't know how much you'll learn.
Easy Quizes, but i came out not knowing how to play the guitar.
needs to be more help ful
Oh it was soooooo boring.
Ive taken him for lots of classes. Music Appreciation was a breeze, Aced it. Boring, but he made it lively and kinda funny cause hes a bit of a goof. His Guitar classes are very professional, so be aware and ready to learn.
easy class if you pay attention. can use notes on all tests. doesn't take attendence, but the in-class note really help so go to class. lots of extra credit available. very helpful teacher, wants students to pass, interesting to listen to. knows a lot about what he's teaching
Mr. Chapman really works at your level no matter how low in 164 and 165. There is so much room for improvement because you are only competing (for a grade) against yourself instead of anyone of higher skill. A master class type setting. Put in even a small amount of work, & the returns are big.
Mr.Chapman I'd say is one of my favorite teachers. I have learned many techniques for guitar from his classes, and have learned how to read music. I have also participated in the orchestra, guitar 163, and guitar 165, I will also be helping out with an upcoming concert. Cheers, suite del recuerdo.
Mr. Chapman is awesome and I absolutely loved his class. I wish I was taking guitar because he's funny and real and taught all of us a lot about the history of music all over the world. Sign up for Learning Communities..they're really a great opportunity.
I started off just learning guitar for fun, but now I am thinking about it on a more serious level. If u want 2 learn how 2 play guitar AND how 2 read music, take MUS163!You will be happy with the results, but remember: What u put into the class is what u will get out of it! Plus he is so adorable!!!
Best classical player I have studied under. Extremely dedicated to students (esp guitar orchestra). David is a gifted player and a patient teacher, anyone seriously interested in aquiring serious classical technique should take his classes...
Professor Chapman only warmed up after the final. It was difficult communicating with him during the semester. Even though I earned an A in his class, I was hoping it would have been more enjoyable. Since music is not my major, there was already a new language to learn and he frustrated me when he stood there only to hear himself speek.
I heard he was assholish in music appr, but i had him for beg guitar and had a blast. funny guy, although it takes a minute to get use to his personality.. if you show any potential he'll try and get you to change your major to guitar!

Friggin spaz dude! i dropped that class cuz he teaches it like its the only one u got!
Mr.Champan is a bad ass teacher. If u really want to learn guitar he will help u out tremondously. Great teacher for those looking to become "Guitar Majors"

I think I might go take his guitar class now!
Nice teaher but his lessons are a little hard for someone who has never picked up a guitar before, i am having trouble keeping up cause I learn better when im shown not just handed a piece of paper and told learn it.
Awesome guy, one of the best players ever. maybe loves pink floyd to much though...
The best music teacher in the world. Very helpful and clear. I did not even buy a book and got over 100% in his class. Highly recomend him!!!!!!!!
Probably the best guitar player I have ever seen, but I don't think that he can really teach worth a d*mn. He doesn't spend enough time teaching how to actually read music, he pretty much gives you the songs on paper and wants you to be able to play them within a week. also him and his damn "thumb" thing, take his class you'll find out what i mean
EASIEST A I"VE EVER GOTTEN!!! I did nothing and passed with an A. I never went to class or did the assignments, just took the tests(which are stupidly easy)
I've heard a lot of bad things about him but I thought that his class was really easy. You gat extra points from homework and you get to use you notes on all of the tests including the final.

He is a very cool teacher. Kicked people out of class a couple of times. They were talking while he was lecturing and he gave them a choice to leave. He lets you use notes on the test and final. Easy class if you pay attention and do all your work. I suggest taking his course/s. He is very helpful and understanding.
He allows use of notebooks, no text required. Simple rules show up, take notes, and don't talk during his lectures. He will ask you to leave. It's rude and distracting. Can come off as abrasive, he wants people to care about thier education. All in all I would take a class from him again. Not as bad as I was told.
nice teacher but all talk and no teach...just jib jabbing about himself 24/7 he helps you when you need help but then gets carried away with his life story without teaching us a damn thing...we could have got alot done but he talked too much.
He was a very fun and interesting teacher. He played a lot of music clips from around the world, which kept class going. He gave extra credit opportunities if you really wanted to get a good grade. Good to take for all libs majors.
This professor is one of the best out there. He care about the student and does not accept distraction. He will ask students to leave if they talk with is cool because they make it hard to hear him during lecture. Dont listen to others that say he is not good, they’re probably mad because they got kicked out or got a bad grade.
Very Good And teachines you about music
I'm in his course now and so far I think he is hard to understand with his accent. He talks way to fast and tries to be funny by talking about his life. Since he doesnt require a textbook, u have to be there to listen and take down copious notes. With his accent, it is hard to keep up. Overall, I'm not learning anything in the class.
this is a great class. he's funny, interesting, nice, and he didn't make us buy any textbooks. take notes and you'll get a good grade on the tests.
Although Mr. Chapman has good intentions for his students and even allows take home tests, his lectures and material he covers is very shady to say the least.. Half the stuff we take notes on in class isn't even on the test and you can barely understand him when he talks. [HINT] Don't take this class unless you are a music major period!
People who are hating on Chapman just don't get it. He was one of the easiest teachers ever. I had the highest grade in the class and I'm not even a music major. Just take the notes and don't talk too much in class. His accent isn't a problem at all. If you have a good sense of humor he is pretty HILARIOUS. Good guy, might just take him again.
The class was ridiculously easy. I took music appreciation with him and ended up with an A. What was also the shiet was that he called up all A students to the front of class during finals and said we could leave. So do well and get rewarded.
Easiest class in the world!! No book required and all tests were take home.. as long as you attend the class and take notes you will have an A
AMAZING TEACHER!! YOU REALLY HAVE TO TRY HARD TO FAIL OR GET A BAD GRADE IN THIS CLASS. TESTS ARE TAKE HOME, HE OFFERS AN EXTRA CREDIT TEST, AND YOU ONLY HAVE TO WRITE A 2 PAGE DOUBLE SPACED PAPER. NO BOOK NO HOMEWORK. AND YOU GET TO USE YOUR NOTES ON ALL THE TESTS!! REALLY FRIENDLY, RANDOM AND KINDA SEXY TOO .
what ever you do don't take this class it's stupid and boring i went to every session and took all the notes and finished all assignmets/tests and i received a D this is ridiculous!!!
This class was extremely easy and fun at the same time. The lectures were always accompanied by genuine music from each era, and we did some fun activities in class that helped me understand the topics at hand more. As long as you GO TO CLASS and DON'T CHEAT OR DO ANYTHING TO LOSE YOUR PRIVELAGES, you will get an A in this class!
Really fun class, played all strings, would work with the student it was really easy to pass. It was a little difficult at first with the medieval chanting but later the questions got easier when we went to the baroque era and later. Did anyone notice the people complaining about him couldn't even enter the right section number or spell correctly?
Awesome teacher. Extremely funny and charismatic. The class itself was easy so long as you can PAY ATTENTION. Remember to not only take the notes he has up but listen as well. He'll quiz you on what he says just as much as the notes he gives. No textbook needed. Easy tests. If you have an A by the time of the final you are EXEMPT! Awesome A+.
I found Chapman's class to feel very challenging at times. His unclear lectures and tests make you feel vulnerable, but his final grade is very forgiving and almost charritable. When push comes to shove, I can't help but acknowledge that the guy is a very easy teacher, you just have to deal with his lectures and the end result will pay off...
Loved he's class.. He is full of knowledge and speaks like 7 languages. The class is highly interesting and easy if u pay attention. I took this class previously with Stoud and Failed, it was to boring. I retook it with Chapman and got an A. You can't FAIL. HE ALSO OFFERS X CREDIT @ THE END OF THE SEMESTER.
I wouldn't recommend taking his class online. He takes weeks to reply to emails, and posts lectures and tests late. He isn't helpful. No textbook is used so it's all his lecture. I was looking forward to this class, now I'm hating it. I just wish he wouldn't slack off. Maybe he shouldn't be teaching an online class.
Awesome awesome teacher. Makes learning fun. If you attend class every day and pay attention during the lectures the class is an easy A.
Online Class is easy but his computer broke halfway through the semester and he didn't even tell anyone for over a month. While it is hard to get ahold of him, he is very nice about resetting tests so you can get the grade you want. A nice guy, but should be more involved, even if it is online...
I have never been so lost in a class in all my life. lectures were so confusing! i know the professor meant well but he just made things so unclear that i never felt comfortable going into a test or quiz. it was definitely not what i expected out of a music appreciation class :/
Show up to class everyday, take notes, and then do the quizzes and exams. Simple. Once report, plus various extra credit opportunities. tells you whats going to be on the test/quizzes. If you have an A in the class like I did, you are exempt from the final. Good class. And you can use your notes on EVERYTHING.
Took his music appreciation class online...big mistake! The entire class is so confused. This was supposed to be an easy a. Don't take it online. Take it on campus and from someone else. He is a nice guy but he expects students to know all the terminology and everything else about music. This class was not what I expected
Super nice guy, but do not take this class online! Confusing terminology, unorganized, the music links never work so you don't learn the information before the quiz is due. Take this class on campus with a different prof!
He seems like a nive nough guy but I took/currently taking his Music class online and it is so confusing! You cannot access a lot of the tests or quizzes and when you do they have been poed 2 days before due. He is extremly unorganized and hard to get ahold of. I'm trying to get the class ropped because I am worried it will affect my GPA!
I think he's an awesome teacher and notes are the most valuable thing that you have from this class b/c they are what you are going to refer to when you study. He incorporates different aspects to his teachings and is very nice and makes learning fun.Plus even though he's like older,I think he's pretty darn attractive.I think it's the accent...
he wants you to recognize, by ear, things like meter and form?!! More than anything what made me mad was how he missed class on more than one occasion without sending out so much as an email and that he throws quizzes and tests out at random and you have to write 4 giant concert reviews. he's unprofessional and disrespectful. do not take him.
David Chapman is an amazing guitarist and friend. I was transformed as a musician after taking and graduating his 2 year guitar program. Amazing teacher that goes above and beyond to see his students succeed! Highly recommend if you love guitar and want to grow as a musician. I am not the same guitarist. Great character as well. Thank David!!!
Horrible teacher. Confusing fast pace half our class had dropped it. Avoid at all costs !
this class is so hard! He is very fast paced and doesn't explain every well. Don't get me wrong he is a great person and tries to teach what he loves, but the class is just impossible. I wish I had dropped it. I recommend taking another class. Also this class requires 4 essays and all the other classes only require 1. Anyways best of luck.
Professor Chapman is very passionate in what he teaches, but I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. Although I got an A, it wasn't easy. If you do take him, pay attention & take notes on EVERYTHING he says. He has much pride in his doctorate degree in music, and comes across as rude. I wouldn't recommend him.
Dr. Chapman loves what he does and I really admire his dedication to that; he is also very nice. With that being said though, I am a Biology major and simply took this course for GE. There is too much work and the work is very difficult especially if you have zero interest in music like me. I do not recommend unless you're a music major.
First of all, he gives WAY TOO MUCH WORK and expects students to know too much. He assigns hour long videos to watch weekly and he even expected us to watch 3 hours worth of videos for one assignment. He's nice and all, but I'm not even a music major; it's simply ridiculous. Do not take unless you're a music major.
This was an online class and for not being a music major, it was kind of hard. This class entails a lot of work but it is doable! You will learn a lot though which is good if you actually want to become a better person all around. Teacher is fantastic in helping which meant a lot!
Dr. Chapman gave alot of work which could be difficult for non-musicians like me, however, he is always willing to assist when/where needed. One of the best professors I've had so far!
Dr. Chapman is an excellent instructor who teaches an excellent class. If you are looking for an easy A with no work, as it seems many on here are, this is not the class for you. If you are looking to learn a huge amount about music from a talented and extremely helpful professor this class is for you. But it can be alot of work so be prepared.
This teacher obviously can not handle his classes and his online classes. He is very unorganized and does not respond back to you fast enough. He always leaves out modules when theyre due which makes assignments late. there is alot of work and not enough time in the week to do them all and i have alot of free time during the week. Horrible teacher
Chapman is very passionate about his work and seems to have the answer to anything in the realm of music. He is wishy-washy when it comes to class structure and prompting assignments, but if you do the work and seem to try your hardest then getting an A should be no problem. Really fun class, and a really awesome teacher.
Completely disorganized. Disregard the the syllabus because he will, completely. All you have to do is show up and listen to him go on and on about himself. If you're lucky he won't force you to listen to his guitar solos. This class (intro into world music) has made me reconsider the quality of a degree from MJC.
VERY confusing, unorganized, and unclear. I am not a music major & he teaches this class as if everyone knows music like he does. Shows videos & expects us to identify beats, etc by sound! He also goes straight into music terminology that only those knowledgeable on the subject will know. His syllabus didn't help, he rarely followed it himself! :
He's hard to understand, and sometimes the material was read in german, italian, and spanish. Little bits of extra credit but not much. He starts in the deep end of material that makes everything taught later on confusing. The powerpoint slides are hard to understand and not useful for tests.
Don't get me wrong, he is a VERY nice professor, and always gives feedback. He assigns LOTS of essays, and discussions. The workload can vary a LOT week-to-week (online); which is kind of irritating. This class is a LOT of work; you will spend much more time in this class than all your other classes combined. -Sort of an absent-minded professor.
This class is forever burned into my memory as the hardest class I have ever taken! He lectures in different languages, none of which I speak. He gave tons of homework, even on finals week! He expects you to know meter by ear. I was so lost I broke down crying to him. Lectures and hand writing so unclear. He is a nice person, but I don't reccomend
I took his guitar 2 class, and it was suppose to be for people that just know the basics and just finished guitar 1. However, after taking a few days of his class I dropped out, he makes you get in front of the class and play a song on the first day of class. He tells you that he will be tough on the first day of class. He favors music majors.
DISCLAIMER: I took his summer class. I thought it was an easy if one is adept at taking notes and asking good questions. One year later, I still apply ideas I learned in that class.
Usually unorganized during lectures. He uses Prezi, but doesn't make clear points on it. Don't take the class if you aren't a music major because it will be hard to keep up. Course materials aren't always on Canvas when you need them. He doesn't respond effectively to emails. Tests online w/ multiple attempts. He's a nice guy, just needs guidance.
Dr. Chapman is a phenomenal musician. I came into his class thinking i was a great guitarist, then HE showed me what is possible.
Dr. Chapman is a hidden gem at MJC. He is truly passionate about music, and cares about his students. The first few weeks of music 101 will be tough because you will be learning new terminology but stick through it the course all makes sense once you pass get over that hump. You will take a lot from taking this course.
He's honestly a nice guy, but he's kind of all over the place. And if you're not a music major; get ready to Google everything he says. The only reason why i wouldn't take his class again is the concert reports. I DO NOT have the TIME nor the MONEY to go to 4 different concerts in the middle of the semester.
I have As and Bs in all my other classes, and currently have a B in this class but I'm dropping it. His teaching style is just not good and doesn't allow me to understand,I've had to ask him to slow down and reteach stuff at least twice a class. If you aren't a music major or don't know anything about music, good luck with this class.
Ive never been so bored.
super boring class.
This professor is very passionate about music and you can see the love he has for teaching it. With that being said he's a great professor however I have no interest in this subject I only took it for one of my generals so it was very boring and difficult to memorize the information. I had to study hard for tests. Wish he taught a different subject
While he was an interesting person to get to know, I found that he deviated from the topics in the book. Our class transitioned from Travis Silvers to him, so it was understandable, but he also didn't make what he wanted completed for the class very clear, but this class was easy enough that It didn't matter too much. He also offers extra credit.
assignments are due almost everyday, the readings are long and time consuming as well as the videos. he wants a lot done in very little time
There is an extensive amount of coursework. He is very brilliant and has his Doctorate in Music Theory but he expects entry level music class to comprehend ideas intended for music majors. Not an easy A.
He's an amazing Guitar instructor and person. Because of this, took his music appreciation class. My mistake was taking the class online. It's a lot of work! Some assigned videos to watch are hour long. Perhaps taking the class at the campus would have been better. I did learn a lot and enjoy music. Be prepared to take notes on those videos!
