Charlet is a skinny hippee tree hugger with a major chip on his shoulder because he has a PhD in Ecology. Serious control freak issues.
Most people stopped coming to class because everything on the tests is in the book. Over half the class dropped because the tests were too hard and everyone was failing them. VERY CONFUSING TESTS. Very enthusiastic about the subject, too bad he didn't choose something more meaningful to get a Ph.D in. Don't take this class if you don't have to.
He is why people hate science class. It's a NON-MAJOR class but he thinks it's med school. If your on the Millennium and normamlly get good grades plan to have no life to study for this class. He's not professional because he doesn't care if you study hard and want to do well. Horrible class, if no one else is available wait until next semester!
This man is, as they say, gay as a $3 bill! He never wants to help and doesn't help the students. I can't believe I didn't drop out sooner, and his tests were hard. I took his class in fall 2001 and still can't believe he got that Ph.D! He is no good!
god this class sucks the time out of the clock, spits it out, then sets it on fire. We actually work to the LAST minute, and get maybe a page of notes out of it, because he wastes so much time on unimportant crap like word origins or hippie stories. And yeah he thinks enviornmental science is some sort of robot chimpanzee brain surgery, I recommend setting up a system w/ someone where you each go one day a week and exchange notes or something. Bo-ring: Bo = greek for, please shoot me now. Ring = waaaah
He added real life examples to my environmental class that made it that much more interesting and fun--even though he is kind of a touch professor.
Maybe I'm taking this class from a different Dave Charlet, but I like him. He's clear, helpful, fun and he spends time with you if you need him to. I'm not saying the other posts are lying, but if you actually cared about the class, maybe he would have helped you too. by the way, he's into raggae, not hippy music (do a little research guys).
This Professor is very kind, but I do not think he knows how to teach very well. His TESTS ARE REALLY HARD (even to the ones who actually tried in his class!!) I ended up dropping the class.
the hardest class i have ever taken. I'm not into science so i didn't enjoy the class at all. If your major is science and you love it take it then if you would want an easy class then dont take it..
Dr. Charlet is extremely knowledgeable and he does take the time to answer your questions, although most of the time it has to be done after class. His lectures are great and he does take your participation, questions, and you walking out personally. He is always prepared and does give his 110% every class; in return he expects the same from his st
A+ from me- I liked him.Dr.Charlet's love for the bio subject matter is evident in his lively presentations. I recall he once admonished a student who asked a question about something which he had just spent 5 minutes explaining. It was like she ignored his lecture-So pay attention! Bio 196 & micro aren't any easier but I learned to love this stuff.
Ugh...what a horrible class, I don't see how anyone can have liked having him for a teacher. He rambles on about unrelated things that aren't on the test. Maybe if he concentrated on the subject we'd get out early.
Horrible professor. Very hard. i ended up dropping his class because it was too hard. He actually tells you that if you don't study for his class 4hours a day that you won't pass, and its true. wouldn't recomend him if you actually want to have a lifecause with all that studying you won't!
I loved Dr. Charlet. Difficult? Yes. He tells you his class will be difficult on the first day. Listen to him! He expects you to be able to manipulate the information, not just memorize definitions. He is passionate about his subject and more than willing to help any student who asks. An A in his class is actually worth something.
I FAILED ALMOST ALL OF HIS EXAMS, AND ALOT OF PEOPLE IN THE CLASS WERE FAILING TOO. I HAD TO DROP THIS CLASS! THE CLASS WAS HARD, BUT WHAT MAKES IT THE WORSE IS THE NOTES AND READINGS ARE VERY EASY TO FOLLOW ITS THE EXAM THAT SUCKS!!!
very hard and not understanding... class has no value... worked my hard and did decent on exams and essay
All tests for Bio 189 are very difficult. Its the college's way of weeding out people. Charlet's classes were 99% useless. He rambles on about topics that are never on the test. To pass with a fair grade, expect to study the text book, the end of chapter quiz in the book, and the online tests. Watching the online videos help. You teach yourself.
Drops lowest of 4 tests & gives tests back to review for final which is 70% of the previous tests. 3 pop quizzes. Easy research paper. If you read when & what your supposed to read and come to class = no less than a B, but his tests are no cake walk so know your material
Class is difficult, but Prof. Charlet is knowledgable and more than willing to give any help you need. Avoid the class if you're looking for an easy science credit, but if you are serious about it, the class is very rewarding.
Dr. Charlett knows a lot about the subject and his is passionate about it, but NOT a great teacher. This is a very hard class, the tests are VERY difficult. Choose another professor if you can. He expects you to study at least 3 hours a week for his class only, and wants you to love it as much as he does, never mind that this is a NON-MAJOR class
this is in defense of Dr. Charlet. his 'off the subject matter' approach ties so nicley into what he is saying if you pay attention to his train of thought. he is not easy but to deny his teaching abilities because you did poorly on a test, which were all covered in the reading and the lectures, is a sad excuse for rating him poorly.
I really enjoyed going to his class and listening to his knowledge, but when it came time for the tests i failed them all. I read the text, used index cards, studied hard and still failed! HARD CLASS!!! if your looking for just a science credit, DONT TAKE IT! Only take it if you absolutely HAVE to!
Dr. Charlet is to date one of the best professors I have had. He is extremely passionate about his field, and knows more about plants than anyone I have ever met. I understand it is an introductory class so you will be tempted to **** around and not read what you are supposed to, but if you keep up on everything you will do fine.
Professor Charlet is a great teacher. He loves this subject and it shows. He never makes you feel small for not knowing the answers just study very hard and you will do fine. Don't just study the bold print or you will no pass.
4 quizzes; 4 exams 50 multiple choice; 1 final. His exams are extremely difficult. Lectures consist of changing the information in the book and excessive rambling. His reviews for exams are next to nothing. They were extremely difficult no matter how much you may study or attempt to prepare for them. Dr. Chalet is a nice guy in a weird kind of
i hate this teacher. he thinks his the king
The guy is a psycho. I had no understanding of the subject because it just seemed like he didn't teach exactly what was in the book. Didn't seem like a 101 class. Very difficult. Must live and breathe environmental science if you want to pass.
this is the worst professor ive ever had. what we took notes on in class and reviewed was never on the tests. his tests and quizzes were extremely hard and not on the material we studdied. if you want to fail i reccomend this class.
This class is extremely hard!! i would not recommond taking it. You can tell tel Mr. Charlet has a passion for his studies, but holy **** this class is so fard, almost everyone is failing!!!
This teacher is nice, but totally not fit for helping students with different learning styles. He doesn't answer questions and his tests are a total load of crap. 3/4 of his class withdrew and dropped the class, and the remaining are currently failing, if you don't believe me good luck!
WORST TEACH EVER!! he makes you think you can pass the class with the extra credit.. but he fails to tell you that the extra credit is from 2 chapters ahead on graphs!! SO RETARDED!! The only way to pass is if you find a person that actually stayed throw the whole year.. he uses the same tests! HORRIBLE TEACHER!!
I took this professor a couple of semesters ago and still have nightmares!! He is very passionate about what he teaches but doesnt teach it well. I get mostly A's and B's and have never dropped a class in my college career until I across this professor. I like science but he is HORRIBLE.
He is very interested in what he teaches and is more than happy to assist you if you need clarification. I've learned that if you email him, it makes much more sense. Also extra credit is almost always the day after a test so read ahead. As for the tests read before the lecture and after. Then read again on the stuff he talks about alot!!!
This is the only C grade I have received in any college class. Dr. Charlet makes this course far more demanding than it should be for a 100 level course. I would strongly suggest anyone taking this class use a different professor!
Do not take this class, even if it is the last class available. Do yourself a favor and just wait until next semester (I and many others warned YOU!). His test are multiple trick questions and his "extra credit quizes" are like 2 chapters in advanced (He fails to tell you). Horrible teacher! I still have nightmares to!
GO AHEAD! TAKE HIM!!! I DARE YOU!!! WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
he's hard... but if you struggle and fail every test, you'll still wind up with a c. he'll do everything to help you once you visit him during office hours and ask him for help
His class was difficult at first, but his passion on the subject was evident. Just as long as you take a little time to do the practice test in the book you could pass his test.
I learned more about the earth and its science in the 7th grade. His exams are ridiculous and when it comes to review, you might remember more just by gluing your face to your textbook.
His tests are hard. I would not recommend this class if you want to get an A! He lectures the entire time and you basically have to learn everything on your own if you want to do good.
This class is freaking hard...explains like 3 topics at the same time
The lectures do not always coincide with the info given in the book. You'd think he'd test/quiz based more off his lectures but they are 100% from the text. You must go to class because the quizzes are a surprise. Go to class and read your text but make sure you have already read it at least once because that's what's on your quiz!
He is an expert in biology, however he does not know how to teach it. Tests are extremely hard, lectures are pointless, he does not prepare you for what is going to be on the test. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, very bad experience. His idea of reviewing for the final is wait until a student asks a question, come on....Nice guy, but stay away
Dr. Charlet is no doubt passionate about science, but his teaching process is not as well received. There is no real structure to his lectures, just rambling about certain things that are kind of meaningful in the chapter. Tests are ridiculously precise and difficult.
He is very knowledgeable about biology but every lecture he does not stay on topic. He will being to talk about the topic at hand but will veer off into something irrelevant. I will not recommend this professor to any of my friends, nor should any of you choose him as your professor if it is a last resort.
First the good things, he is nice and passionate about his subject which makes a difference. However, for the bad things, he does not know how to teach it. He doesnt cover all the chapters and talks about ONE thing for 20 min. Some of it is irrevelant. Then his tests that are extremely difficult and he doesnt even go over what to study.
He's very intelligent and a nice guy, but not good at teaching. Assigns chapters to read, but his lectures are rambling making it difficult to take notes. There's no PowerPoint to help guide students along and there's no review prior to tests. He'd be better if he was more organized. Definitely don't recommend taking him.
Does not respond to emails. Test have nothing to do with notes. Unless you had a prior biology teacher who taught you well, do not take this class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Does not stay on topic. I entered the semester with a 3.2 GPA and with taking his class, I ended up dropping to a 2.7 GPA. He has ruined my chances of pursuing higher level classes. DO NOT TAKE HIM EVEN IF IT IS A LAST RESORT!!!
Absolutely horroble professor. Does not give notes, does not stay on topic, and expects students to be biology experts prior to each class meeting. By any means, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Worst college professor I have ever had. He makes the class near impossible, seems like he doesn't want us to succeed. Lectures are all over the place, he isn't consistent, doesn't use any notes, goes off topic all the time, leaves the class confused. He seems like he has a passion for biology but not the kind for teaching. DONT DO IT!
THE WORST TEACHER EVER! YOU WILL WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY FOR A LOWER GRADE! I read the other reviews, but did not listen. I had to take teacher for convenience. I can't stress enough:DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM THIS PROFESSOR! You can get an easy A with any other professor. NO reviews for tests, NO help from lectures, NO notes, NO help at all!!!
You had to ask questions about what you thought would be on the exam. He would cover information that students inquired about but, never covered anything that he knew would be on the test. Tests were hard despite studying and reading the book. Pop quizzes can't be made up. Often went on tangents not related to class. I got a D & studied hard.
My first on campus class. Haven't taken Bio since HS. Can ramble in lectures if not kept on track. Doesn't use overheadPPT notes. 7 "pop" quizes, lowest dropped, 4 Exams, 1 Final. I did all my notes while reading the chap. Reading is a must!! Ch need to be read before class. He can be very confusing but is passionate. NO PHONES! Lookin @ B or C
No assignments only tests. Tests are SUPER HARD. I think he could be a great teacher, but biology is a terrible subject and it'll never be easy.
4 Exams that's it. Tests are extremely specific. Expects you to know everything.
Dr. Charlet is a great professor with a significant understanding of the material he's teaching. He's fun to listen to, and though I feel some of his lectures are "oh, hum", he still gets his point across in a lighthearted way.
this professor is absolutely awful whatever you do, do not take him he has a 50% passing rate and does not care if you pass or fail. all he does is lecture. no notes no power points nothing. he goes off on tangents and what he talks about is not even on his exams. he is horrible and not there to help at all.
Reading some of the reviews on here, I thought people just weren't putting in the time and exaggerating. He rambles like many say he does, his tests are based on the book but are difficult. Studied for hours each day and still would only pull a D on exams. Had to drop the class. I would not recommend taking him unless you know everything biology.
Through out the entire class he will ramble on and jump from one subject to another. Most of the notes come from the book, not the class. TESTS are unclear and very tricky if you don't read the chapters assigned to the class.
Dr. Charlet is a published expert in the science of Biology. His lectures provided to me expert insight and inquiry into the subject matters at hand. At times, it was inspiring. He assumes that everyone is prepared for class and rightfully so. I did not get an A but I appreciated and enjoyed his lectures. I would take his class again if I could.
I was terrified when I had to take this professor. 2nd attempt at the class. I saw people drop the class the first few weeks.A lot of reading. Do well on the pop quiz and paper! (got a's b's) study with online tests. He likes the Kreb Cycle. Study It. They help. I got F's and D's on the tests and still passed with a "C" last exam easiest
I've never had such difficult tests before, and I've had a lot of them. Generally they take place over multiple chapters and are written in a way where 3 of the 4 choices when multiple choice would do. Often times questions aren't on the class notes. Also had a few instances where questions on an exam are asked on a chapter not yet assigned
Dr. Charlet is such a sweet and funny professor! I do agree his tests are a little tough and his lectures can be a little boring but overall he's such a wonderful guy. He's an expert in his field and explains things very well. He's always got a smile on his face and all you have to do is treat him right and he will do the same for you!
He does not like to give out visuals nor does believe in power points. It is all lecture. He never explains what exactly is on the test so you are left studying the entire text and looking at the test as if it were foreign. He is no help at all nor has the motivation to want to help students succeed.
DO NOT TAKE! Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. Really disrespectful and rude. Students are expected to KNOW the material and when asked questions he became upset and humiliated me in front of the class, on multiple occasions. Does not have good lectures. He will rant on about topics that are irrelevant. TERRIBLE PROFESSOR.
He is the WORST professor ever. His lectures are horrible and he gets off topic. He is VERY RUDE! He raised his voice in frustration at a student who went to him for help after class because she had a hard time understanding the material. I feel like he is very discouraging and doesn't care much about the success of his students. DO NOT take him!
First semester back in school full time so I have been very passionate about my education. He teaches the opposite of what he tests, from day one he addresses his students in lecture as science professionals and gets upset when we're unknowledgeable on the subject (that's why we're here). No hw assignments, no reviews. Rambles. "Book is wrong"
I would recommend this professor. He is very nice and has good lectures, but the lectures do not reflect the exams nor does he conduct reviews before the exams. It is expected for you to know all the material which is overwhelming for a 101 class. There aren't any homework assignments or any additional tools assist with success in this class.
This prof is the worst teacher i ever had in all my life.. take him and u won't pass. He is so insensitive, no extra credit, hardly covers enough material and his exams are totally different from his lectures.... my worst 2016 mistake was when i clicked "enrolled" on his class.. Before the middle of the semester, the class was half empty..
Does not explain things well. Gives a lot of information at once. I got on my last test a better percentage than half of the class and it was still a low D. Do not take this class, go to Nevada State or UNLV instead.
hes horrible
Professor Charlet is the toughest professor I 've ever had, but he's also the best I've ever had. Like any quality professor, you really have to work for it. If you're not interested in working hard, don't bother. I was so pleased to pass with a C, even though I am an A student, he instilled a work ethic in me that I will never forget.
Do not take this Teacher. He is very unorganized. He is not good at explaining anything. His class is extra boring and confusing. He asks you questions like you are a scientist yourself.
Dr. Charlet is actually a great professor. Reading the ratings from this site had me fearful going in but I received an A in this course while also taking an additional full time load of classes. Its definitely doable. Most test material comes from the book and the *optional* online component that comes with the book is VERY helpful.
He is terrible. It seems like if you don't write down everything he says and know everything in the textbook then you will not pass. However he does use the same tests every year
If you want to learn and are willing to study, you can get an A out of his class. He is not going to spoon-feed you the information (ie: no study guides). He wants you to think and to use your brain. His tests are hard but if you study the material, do the chapter questions and participate, you can get a good grade.
Most content in the tests comes from the textbook since a significant portion of what he says won't help you much. Often rambles or gets too specific about one thing to the point where he gets off track. Very knowledgeable in his field, but he's a bad instructor. Will make you feel stupid for asking questions. Avoid this professor.
Clearly over qualified to be teaching this course. Dr. Charlet is extremely knowledgeable and seems to truly enjoy teaching. You will get what u earn in this class.
He expects you to read and understand the chapter prior to discussion. His lectures are more socratic discussions where he asks questions and you all learn from thinking together towards the answer. He is not easy but definitely worthwhile. You'll actually get some stuff out of the class.
Your entire grade is based on 4 tests. Which everyone in my class failed all of them so everyone failed the course.
In this class, you have to work for your grade. Overall he is a nice person, once you get to know him. He expects you to EARN your grade. This isn't a easy class at all. His tests are very complex and complicated. Study hard, and always ask questions. It's difficult at times but you CAN pass. If your willing to put in the work, it can be done.
He is brilliant . A little hard to follow sometimes. He will challenge you . Make sure you read the chapters before you come to lecture. There is no homework just make sure your are studying the material . If you need help ask him , he will help you. If your looking to just pass this class dont take him but if you want to learn something take him
First off, the class is difficult, not the teacher. Yes you must work hard, but thats just the nature of this class. Dr. Charlet lets you keep your tests to review what you got wrong and why. He really wants you to understand and retain material instead of just learning it for a test. Take him if you really want to learn and are motivated to work.
Hard class, amazing professor made it worth it. You can tell that he cares and is knowledgeable in his field and wants you to succeed. If you read the chapter before lectures, the class is so much easier to understand. If you actually try, you won't fail. Take this class if you actually want to learn something instead of an easy A!
Hes nice but does get frustrated when things arent grasped. I would take him again but theres only exams for grades, that are really hard. You cant predict what will be on the exam making it hard to study. I even take non stop notes but it doesnt seem to help honestly. My best advice is read everything and try to remember everything.
Dr. Charlet is a very nice man who wants his students to succeed. But, if you don't test well and don't like to read the textbooks required, this class is not for you. It isn't an easy A if that is what you're looking for, either. You really have to work if you're going to pass this class, grades based solely on tests given.
Nice but doesn't teach well. Expects students to memorize every little thing in the textbook with chapter 50 pages or more. Majority of us are failing this class.
Horrible teacher. I learned nothing, we do no assignments except read 50 page chapters and expected to pass tests
Professor expects you to learn by listening to his lectures, that seem pointless to go to since you never learn anything on the test. Your only hope is reading the textbook and trying to remember every little thing. Professor was also not very nice at all, and has some serious anger issues. Only grades are from really hard tests. DONT TAKE CLASS!!
worst class ive taken. Four tests make up your entire grade so theres no chances to help yourself. the majority of what is discussed in the lecture is not on the test. He does not go over important material needed to do well on tests. you might as well be teaching yourself the subject.
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!! He expects you to learn from him just standing in the front talking. You get a few big tests and no other work, so those tests make or break your grade. The test questions are barely ever things he actually covered. If you go ask for help he's mean. He also jumps around the chapter and then contradicts what he said. No thanks
Dr. Charlet.. IS A TERRIBLE TEACHER!!!! All of the reviews are right, the grades are mostly just tests so its really easy to fail. I dropped this class because I could not take it any further!! His lectures have no relevance to the test whatsoever. Majority of the class is failing. You have been warned not to take this class.
I had him or both ENV 101 and BIO 189. WORST TEACHER THAT I HAVE EVER HAD!!!. If you a horrible test taker and cant learn from a book this not the class for you. Only goes over half of the chapter and moves on. He expects to know everything in the book and he side I quote Im a college drop out and I think its a bunch of bs.
I had him for both env101 and bio189. WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!.. if you are a horrible test taker or cant learn straight out Of a book. This not the class for you. He expects you To read 10000 pages for you to know very signal thing. He only goes over half the chapter and talks about nothing that has to do with the subject. LEARN NOTHIING!!
Not a good professor. If you're bad at tests, there is no way you'll pass, but because what is on his tests is nothing that he covers during lectures. Tests are extremely hard and he doesn't slow down. He gets very off topic and he teaching methods suck. Probably a great guy, but terrible professor.
Prof. Charlet was the worst professor. Whatever he talks about in class are not even on the exams. Watch out for random quizzes. Gets distracted really easy when people walk in and out of his classroom. He does talk about the chapter, but also goes off of what he is talking about. You are basically learning the material on your own.
Took this class for spring and the first day told us half of the class would fail... within the first two weeks half the class dropped and everyone stopped showing up. He is lecture heavy and a goof. I stayed hoping I could pass as im usually an A B student but nope. DO NOT TAKE HIM WHATSOEVER. grades are only based on tests and he drops ur low.
terrible teacher. i complained & the workers in the office told me that he has a 68% failing rate. He goes over half of each chapter. while every other class is on ch4, youll be on ch8 so the SI sessions & exam reviews wont help cuz youre not on the same chapters. started off w/ 24 students, ended w/ 12. told me he didnt care or want my respect
This was one of my first experiences in a college class ever, and let me just tell you, it was the hardest class I have ever taken in my career as a student. The lectures are barely like the tests and you are basically told to learn the information on your own. Tests are the only graded assignment, so if you arent a good test taker, skip out :)
I took this class online because of Covid, but I expected to do better since I would have more time to study. The tests are very hard, if you study everyday for hours you will still not be able to get a perfect score on your tests. There are 5 tests, and they all contain questions that need critical thinking skills. Hard class to pass.
Lectures rarely covered the material on the tests. He is very knowledgeable about biology, but very short-tempered if someone does not understand.
Extremely difficult exams, mainly composed of high level critical thinking questions so when you are studying, be sure to understand EACH CONCEPT for every sections and chapters. Be sure to understand the vocab words and the "what, when, how, where" of each words. Prof does not upload recorded lectures, just powerpoints so youtube will be ur bff
Had to take the course online due to covid-19 I did take that in consideration, he might be a good professor in live lectures. He doesn't give out homework or quizzes only exams . He put out powerpoints of basically what the textbook says . He does not put up anything and there is no study guides . Please don't pick him.
Four tests and one final exam, no assignments besides 5 labs that don't correlate with textbook material. If you do good on labs it will boost your grade. Posts 'lectures' which are slides reviewing the text. Will say something is on the test and it isn't. Nice guy but not a good class at all.
I purposely drive without a seatbelt hoping id die before I get to his class because thats how BAD it is. His lectures are very hard to keep up with and exams are the only thing he grades. He doesnt give out assignments, quizzes or study guides to help with the exams. Seems like a nice guy but his class is not worth spending money on.
literally don't take this teacher. I'm saving your life... DON'T DO IT.
Charlet's a smart dude, but his lectures don't translate to what he tests on. He does nothing to prepare you for his tests. 189 is the prereq for 223 and 224 and I still think 189 was the hardest because I had to learn everything on my own. YouTube really will be your best friend. You must be a self-starter and an independent learner to do well.
Taking this class taught me how to really buckle down and learn stuff on my own. He doesn't teach you. It's like he's so smart, the concept of relaying information to people who don't understand is beyond him. I think he was a horrible teacher, but I still credit his class for making me a stronger student and teaching me how to teach myself.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS GUYS CLASS. everything people are saying is true; his lectures are about everything other than the test stuff, the exams are extremely difficult and the "notes" he posts are just bare bones bolded one liners about subjects, followed by only 5 test exams where each question leaves you wondering "when did we learn this?"
Dr. Charlet is a decent person, but not a good professor at all. Please do not take him! There are 4 exams which are extremeley critical thinking. His lectures are pointless, he likes to use a socratic seminar to teach but he goes off topic and doesn't even cover all of the units on the exams. The only way to succeed was teach yourself everything.
PLEASE learn from my mistake and do not take his class. He is a horrible teacher, you have to teach yourself all of the information. ANY other professor is better than him. Your grade relies on 5 tests and he doesnt teach you half the info on the tests. Two months in and majority of the class stopped showing up for lectures. Terrible teacher.
This professor is very hands off and does not teach. We were asked to read the book & his lectures consisted of long 50+ pg. power pt..The professor only gave us large chapter tests every couple of weeks, so if you failed the test then that was it. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Do not take him, but if you have to here is what helped me. The first day he told us that 68% of kids fail his class. For the first test, the class average was a 50%. When preparing for his test, disregard his lectures, and only study the textbook, this is what helped me and the other 30% of kids pass the class. His lectures are supplementary.
This class is awful, almost all of the class is failing and he does not provide you with the tools you need to pass. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! This class is the sole reason I am losing my scholarship and is very hard.
he loves to ramble on about many different things that don't relate to the topic at all. HE LOVES TO TALK ABOUT CORN WHY?? please don't take it if you actually want a good grade. if you accidentally fall into this class this is what you should do: dont pay attention bc its not worth your time, nod and smile, and ONLY STUDY THE TEXTBOOK!!
This isn't my first bio class but this man is just the worst. There isn't a reason to take this class. He doesn't teach or give assignments. He fundamentally fails as a teacher, he just talks about what he wants our feels like. He is a super nice guy but that is about it.
Dr. Charlet is an amazing, kind person who is obviously a biology expert, but this class is not well organized. The grade depends on a few tests with little guidance on how to study or prepare. If you want a good grade, meet with the professor in person as much as you can to ask questions. Overall, an interesting, but frustrating class.
Do not take him. You have to teach yourself everything. He does not give out study guides so you could spend hours studying material that won't even be on the test. There's no homework to help learn the material and he doesn't give feedback. You also can't see what answers you missed on the exams. Good luck if you get stuck with this class.
Worst professor I have ever had in my academic career. BEWARE. I can't believe he still has a job. We started with 22 students and ended with 4 total 3 of which who did not pass including myself.
Very nice Professor. The lectures are mostly a discussion however this can be helpful since he pretty much only covers exam topics. The class is exam heavy so if youre not prepared to study or attend lecture do not take. No extra credit.
Honesty, he doesn't teach well, only talks for the entire class about unrelated things so don't bother showing up. No quizzes, no homework, no extra credit, no study guide, just pure exams. Don't know what answers you got wrong. PowerPoints are incomplete, the book was way too many pages to go through in less than a week.
The only thing determines out grade in this class is literally 4 tests and that's it and they are structured very terrible and Ina very confusing way. If u have not memorized the material u won't do well. This is not a class for those with text anxiety because ur grade will go down the drain.... Please take extreme caution if you choose this class.
I saw other reviews and had to shed some light on Prof. Charlet. It's true, he does only give out 4 exams and does not provide study guides. HOWEVER he is FAIR. He explicitly outline that this class will be tough, with 3 hours of study recommended per hour of lecture. If you want an A, you will get it. Perhaps not easily, but it's not impossible.
Excellent instructor with a sense of humor and true desire to educate. Grades are based on 4 tests and a term paper. You'll need to read and know the material. Great class if you're planning on going into the realm of botany. Not so much if you're looking for a simple undergrad science class.
This class is ridiculously challenging and unfair. I did all my readings, went to lectures, took notes, studied, and still scraped by with a C+. Many tears were shed over this class. Save yourself the stress, and search for another professor.
Currently in this class and it's bad. He uses powerpoints but they're so full of information that they precede the book itself, the book could have 20 pages per chapter of study material but his slides will easily extending into 40+ pages. Lockdown is used for exam so no amount of note taking is gonna help to retain 4 chapters every exam.
Taking him online in Spring 2024. Grade consists entirely of 4 Tests (80pt each) (lowest 1 of 4 dropped), and 1 Final (90pt) that is cumulative from past 4 exams). Material is lecture slides and textbook only. Test 1 covers chapters 1-3, T2 covers chap 4-6, T3 covers chap 8 &10-12, T4 covers 14-15 & 20. Final covers chapters from Test 1-4.
Idk what all these other reviews are yapping about. I took his first exam and it was the lightest work in my life. Class is 4 exams with 1 drop, and a final, and 25% is the lab grade. Exams use lockdown browser with webcam recording. Literally no other work, read the chapters and lectures and you'll pass. Hopefully the other exams are ez as well.
Just took his first exam this week and got a B. Looking back at it, pretty much all the questions came from the textbook. I wish I had studied more instead of cramming everything 1 day before. For those who want to get an A+, I highly recommend studying every day. Memorize the info in the textbook and lecture presentations. Know the vocabulary.
Class is simply studying the textbook and lecture slides. For those of you who want to get an A in the class, know all of the vocabulary in the chapters, i.e. the bold or italicized text, and understand each concept (typically the ones under the orange text.) Once you do that, the tests will become WAYYY easier. Study daily, and don't fall behind.
Let's just start this off my saying that the professor OPENLY admitted that 68% of people fail his class. There is 4 tests plus a final. No other assignments. No assistance from the teacher. The tests are nearly impossible to pass. All you can do is look through the 60+ slides he posts per chapter, and hope for the best. Just don't take his class.
One of the worst professors I've taken, grade is only based on 4 tests and final. He is in love with himself and tries to make it as difficult as possible. Lockdown browser/video recording, I guess he assumes you are going to memorize the entire textbook as there are no other assignments or resources to try to prepare. Anyone else has to be better
Professor Charlet's BIO101 is challenging but manageable with dedication. The 4 exams and cumulative final require consistent studying, but the material is fair. Unstuck Study AI and the free textbook are helpful supplements alongside lectures.
Not as bad as people say. JUST STUDY! Tests are multiple-choice vocab. His lectures do go off topic occasionally, be ready for weird comments, & a short temper. If anyone does complain about the tests/content, though, it is because they didn't study or try. It is extremely easy if you put effort in. Textbook heavy!! Good luck.
Sadly, the other reviews are very accurate in that he is highly temperamental and does properly prepare his classes for their exams. Charlet had numerous scream-arguments with students and didn't provide opportunities for us to test our knowledge before any of the 4 exams that determine the overall grade. Maybe better for BIO majors :/
You have 4 data points combined with the lab component (which has no connection the lectures at all). Anything and everything, no matter how random, mentioned in lectures or in the textbook is fair-game for exams, and read those exam questions carefully. Also, professor is border-line inappropriate with sexual comments in class.
