Not very helpful in Business Calc. Grading is too harsh. Class isn't fun, nor is it easy to learn. Very thick accent doesn't help clarity. Speeds through everything, expecting those who aren't clear to get tutoring. Highly "un-recommended"
HORRIBLE!!!
Smart guy, but is completely clueless when it comes to teaching. Grades inconsistantly, and seemingly unaware that nobody in class has any idea what he's lecturing about.

Class was so hard but he knows that and passes you as long as you dont fail too badly
Very hard to understand, doesn't explain. Just reteaches examples from the book. Failed the midterm & final, but he passed me.
Enjoys making you miserable on the tests. He tests on stuff that wasn't even discussed in class!I did every single math homework math problem and still struggled, and so did the rest of my group.
He teaches straight from the book and doesn't explain clearly. He grades hard and does not give clear reasons for why he takes points away. Many people in the class struggled to understand material he was teaching.
teaches straight from the book, tests are fair and he curves the grades, keep up with the work and ask lots of questions (this kills time and less work for students) in the end chien will grade you fairly
True, teaches from the book, material is not hard to understand. Beware! small mistakes will cost you letter grades in the end.
You have to show up to class everyda for a group quiz one day and an individual quiz another. The exams are pretty easy if you practice the problems on the sample exam. He curves the grade in the end.
I think the computer program in MATH 015, ALEKS is better than this prof. with all respects. He doesn't explain clearly. He tries to do he's own thing instead of just explaining it from the book.
Did not really seem like he knew wat was going on. And always was sweating like he was scared of teaching the class. I did not think he was that good of a teacher because he thought the class was at a good spot with a 65% average. And now my uncle does not think I appreciate him paying my tuitiona nd i have to retake that class.
Had no clue how to teach, made MANY mistakes in examples. Overall very unhelpful in office hours. Take your class with another teacher.
I ended up taking this class twice with him (since he was the only prof offering it). Worst experience ever! I will never take another class with him. He takes off points on homework for not showing enough work. Then he takes off points for showing too much work! Took points off for test problem in which my answer was identical to the textbook!
If you get this professor, I suggest getting a different one. He goes through the material very fast, teaches straight from the book, doesn't really go over too many HW problems, the stuff on the tests, some of it we never went through in class.
Very confusing and hard to listen to. Can't really speak English, so he doesn't make his points well. Seemed eager to help in office hours, but his help was often just as confusing. Did pass me with a C, despite a low grade. Avoid this professor at all costs. His classes are not worth the stress. Takes off disproportionate point amounts. Stay Away!
Bad idea.
DO NOT REGISTER FOR HIS CLASS!!! He yelled at a student for sharpening his pencil during class. Volatile personality! Lacking in character, rude, and sweats excessively. I could barley understand him. Social inept! Lacks communication skills which are key in teaching. The worst instructor that I've ever had. Less than helpful during office hours.
Well, to begin, this is a tough class! Prof. Chein is a nice guy, but a very tough grader! If things are not exactly the way he asks them to be, he will mark you down, a lot! But, he is very very helpful if you go to him during office hours, and he does curve the grades, but to show you, a 58 was a C in our class.
Made me hate math and Cal State. Run in the other direction and don't look back! Unless you are a math genius, I don't recommend this professor.
Had a quiz every class. One day was an individual the other was with a group. Quizzes have a few problems from the homework. You have to get used to his accent... funny guy at times. Not as bad as I thought he would be.
This guy is so mean and rude, if you ask a question, he makes fun of you and makes you look stupid. his homework comes out of the book, goes over it in class and doesnt collect it. but he teaches a million different ways to solve a problem EXCEPT they way the book shows. I have never had a problem with math and this guy really grinds my gears! I go
He is the worst professor ever, i suggest you find another math class. You have quizzes every day so being absent isn't an option and he grades so rediculous. If you don't word exactly the way he wants he marks you off a ton. Hard only because he makes it hard not because the math is hard.
This class was really east. The professor has an acccent so its hard to understand him at times, but he wasn't a bad teacher. You have to go to class everyday because you have quizzes everyday, but the questions on the quizzes are from your homework, so make sure you do it. As long as you do your work, you will pass no problem.
IM TELLING YOU NOW!....DONT DO IT TO YOURSELF! IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER OPTION FOR A TEACHER, EVEN ONLINE..DO IT. I COULD HAVE TAUGHT MYSELF THIS CRAP BETTER!!!
Chien is by far the rudest teacher I have ever had. (Random: He once burpped the ENTIRE time we were taking a quiz) HE IS JUST MEAN AND WILL NOT CUT U ANY SLACK u have to go...it IS easy to cheat on quizzes but he really RUDE not worth it trust me i had him more than once! AAAArgh he makes u feel dumb & honestly jus dont take him TRUST ME
This teacher is HORRIBLE!!!!! worst accident ever, does not like helping students, teachers fast. DO NOT take him
You have to understand his 'math humor'
He is extremely hard to fallow and rude to students. Will not help you when you see him in office hours. Grading is insanely anal and he takes off points, dispite answers being correct, just because he dosn't like how you do a problem. 90% of class fails and he won't help students do better or pull up grade. The worst math teacher!
Most on here is true, very hard grader. His lectures are useless, mainly because it is the book plus human error. But sometimes he offers little pieces of insight that go a long way. He says he doesn't curve, but he "adjusts" at the end. This is his arbitrary curve based on your honest to god effort.
Terrible. Makes math something to be feared.
The worst teacher I've EVER had. NO joke. Don't just get this guy because you like what time his class is at. I have never failed a class before until this one. His lectures are miserably boring and he grades super hard. The first thing he said to us was the class average for my first exam is usually a 58%. DON'T GET HIM!!!
if you are good at math i would take it with him. he gives homework but doesnt care if you do it or not. sounds like most people on here hate him but in all honesty he isnt THAT bad, hes just serious. if you think you can pass relatively easily id take this class because he gives absolutely no busy work. the only thing thats graded is the tests.
He is a nice professor BUT can be rude when you ask a question because he makes you look stupid. He has a very thick accent which makes it difficult to pay attention to the class because you can't understand anything he says. His test are really hard(there's only 5& that's all your grade is based on) if you go to class & pay attention you'll pass the class with a C but more than half of the class failed that class.. Don't take him! But if you do, GOODLUCK!!!!
He is probably the worst teacher I've ever had. Makes countless mistakes and recites the book word-for-word. For $2000 I would have liked a little more. Oh well, I can take comfort in the fact that I make more $ then him and don't have to hide behind the walls of academia ;) AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS, SWITCH SCHOOLS IF NEEDED!!! SERIOUSLY!!!
This guy is really bad. He speaks very little english and gets confused a lot. He doesn't teach he just reads the book to you and thats it. Also his class is only based around 5 tests, no homework, extra credit, or lab. If your bad at tests don't take this class!
seriously this teacher isnt that bad just to the sample test for every test and go to the math lab if you have problems in it not hard at all. You dont even need the book if you do the sample test completely
AVOID AVOID AVOID!!! DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!! Really no joke the Material itself is not difficult but he makes sure to make it! He never really checks the homeworks and him trying to explain a problem is just completely pointless you can never understand what hes saying...change schools if necessary but do not take it!
BEWARE!!! WORST TEACHER EVER, GRADES HOMEWORK HARSHLY, NO STUDY GUIDES FOR TESTS, LIKES TO PUT ?'s ALL OVER YOUR TESTS AND HOMEWORKS. EXAMPLES ON BOARD COME STRAIT FROM THE BOOK, IF HE DOES NOT FINISH THE LECTURE HE TELLS YOU TO FIGURE IT OUT ON YOUR OWN. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, GO ELSE WHERE, SAVE YOURSELF A SEMESTER AND A BAD GRADE!!!!
This teacher was not helpful whatsoever. i retook the class after receiving a D, and after taking his class i got an F! The tests are so hard, they don't even relate to the material. His accent is so heavy it is super hard to understand him. I definetely do NOT recommend him.
RUN! You have been warned...
The class is solely based off of tests. Has an accent so hard to understand at times. Says, "So in other words" and that he's always right a lot. I don't recommend because it is easy material but he makes it more difficult than it is.
HATE THIS CLASS, i feel like im on a sinking ship and i cnt get off. I not a dumb person and the material isn't hard he just makes it so easy to fail his class, and makes the tests impossible you cn only miss like 4 ..its mutiple choice with no parial points so its easy to second guess your self and mess up. Only plus side homework is graded.
Although generally he is kind of nice, he is by far the worst professor I've ever had. The material isn't difficult, but he makes it more complicated than it is. I pretty much had to teach myself. Good luck getting all the examples he shows on the board too. Before you're even done writing them down, he erases them. Try to avoid this class.
He's helpful if you ask questions and if you actually did the homework/study guide problems you're asking him about. I admit that I really just didn't want to do the homework and I fell asleep during his classes a lot. But, I spent a LOT of time in the Math Lab getting help which in ways helped me passed the class.
If you don't want an F or a D in as a grade then don't take this class. PLEASE. I don't even know why he's still teaching. RUN please RUN. I got my first D of all time because of him.
Dr. Chien was a very hard grader on the homework. Test questions were fair, most came directly from the homework. Make sure to have clear and logically sound steps in the homework and test like you would in any math class. I can confidently say I understand L Algebra much better after taking this class. Also, go to office hours IT HELPS!
Chien has the good intention to teach, but due to his heavy accent and unnecessarily confusing explanations he made an attendance of 60+ students drop down to 10 people rapidly. The entire course is based off of 5 tests that make you second guess yourself with a brutal study guide that has over 100 ?s.Homework grades werent included. SAVE YOURSELF!
Very hard to understand his accent. Drop this class if you get him. He doesn't care for attendance and I barely used the books. He assigns homework but it's really pointless. The most helpful thing I found was to study the sample tests and go to the math lab for help. Memorize his sample tests for the actual test and you'll pass the class.
Funny guy. Non math majors would not appreciate his teaching style. Tough grader. Work hard and don't slack for nothing. Math115 is one of the toughest lower division math courses.
Horrible style of teaching. It is also really hard to understand his accent. If you take his course make sure that you rely on the book only and study the lecture before class. During class just ask questions. Don't hope a clear explanation. Also 5 minutes of youtube videos is worth hours of class.
Professor Chien cares about your success in the class if you are willing to show that you care about learning. Go to EVERY office hour if you need help explaining something, because one on one he is VERY helpful, and it also shows that you care. He does do grade bumps for those that put the effort in. If you don't go to class, well good luck...
Nice guy but impossible teacher. Subtracts points for everything even and for getting the right answer but not doing it his way. Lots of homework 20+ hours per week. Don't take a class with him.
Does not let students think outside the box when solving problems. If you do not do it word for word his way you are doing it wrong. Even if you get the correct answer. Avoid at all cost.
He is super hard! He reads right from the textbook and doesn't really know what he's doing. Thick Chinese accent so he's hard to understand. You have an individual quiz each Tuesday, and a group quiz each Thursday so you pretty much always need to go to class
Professor Chien is an old school professor. He expects you to be there every class ( quiz every class) and assigns homework every class. If you study and do your homework before class you'll be fine. The quizzes are literally problems out of the previous night's homework. Don't take him if you're lazy.
Professor Chien was an extremely difficult teacher. I spent many hours in the math lab because he would only teach the examples that the text gave but when it came to the homework problems, I was at a loss because he didn't elaborate on much. It is possible to pass but you MUST put in effort and he likes to see that you care.
The lectures are hard to follow and he can be unclear. The tests are nothing like the hw or study guides if he does give you one
really difficult professor. if you don't do your work on the quizzes exactly as he likes, he marks off points. Even if you have the right answer. Won't slow down the pace of the class for those who have questions. Doesn't teach the sections very well; just goes over the examples. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU CAN!
He moves very quickly through the sections, if you get confused raise your hand. Do all the hw and practice! You get quiz everyday, one individual test on Tuesdays and group quiz on Thursdays. Every point counts, if your not good at math take someone else who will move at slower pace. He mostly does examples from book and quiz ?s are from the hw.
One individual and group quiz is given each week and there are 4 exams. Quizzes are based off of homework questions. Just put go to every class, do the homework, put in effort, and you should be fine. I'm not the best at math so I spent A LOT of time at the math lab but it was worth it! He's very straightforward and helpful.
Extremely hard teacher, expect test averages to be between F-C range. Will not pass if you do not get help from outside/ see him in his office hours. Must do all homework. I would never take again, take Professor Zahedani best Calculus teacher on campus.
By the end of the class, you will know he is right.
Worst professor I've had at cal state! If you struggle math to begin with then DO NOT take this class. He just goes by the examples in the book and erases the board before you could even copy it down. If you read everyone else's comments they're practically saying the same thing so don't waste your time with his class if you can help it!
He's tough but a good teacher. Go to class, take notes, and do the homework and you will do fine. He wants you to learn and is happy to help. Its hard but you have to actively be a bad student to not pass. I encourage you to take his course.
Very hard. Save yourself and take the other dude
This was hands down the most difficult class I've taken at CSUSM. Chein explains things assuming you know everything if you don't ask questions he will leave you in the dust on the very first class. I am a straight A student with a 3.8 GPA and this is the first class that I have ever failed. I recommend you look for another professor if you can.
His lecturing style was pure chaos and hard for me to follow: He'd write up notes on one side and the next do an example on some random part of the board, and he'd consistently repeat this procedure. My advice: Take notes from the book instead, and go to him for office hours for supplementary help. (he's actually a really good one-on professor!)
One letter grade down if you screw up on any exams. NO EXTRA CREDIT IN THIS CLASS. If you skip the class you won't pass. QUIZZES every class; individual and group. Personally, I think he knows subject very well but not suited for teaching. His explanations for problems are hard to follow. Even if you just want to pass this class, TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
I would not recommend anyone to take this class, even if you know calculus. Worst professor I have taken in my 5 years of college at a uni.
I had him for math 242 (Statistics). Here is what class looks like. Come in get your quiz grade back, listen to a lecture which is very long. He explains things really fast. When he asks "any questions" everybody is silent like crickets. Do extra reading every night to catch up. Oh yeah quizzes every day and three midterms plus a final.
This professor sucks, lectures are useless, he makes the material more difficult than it has to be it's kind of absurd, he doesn't post written HW online, so u have to go to class. The grading scale is very test heavy so there's minimal room for error, it's pretty stressful. Written and online hw. Best bet is to study hw solutions for exam.
By far the worst professor I have had at this school. Students had a 40% test average on both midterms, which are the bulk of your grade. The final is brutal. The homework is not difficult but your grade is determined by the exams. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
This professor really sucks!! This is the worst professor I have had. His tests and final are ridiculous difficult. The entire class is lecture but all his lectures are useless. He makes the class to look difficult. Homework and exams are totally different. Almost a third/fourth of the class failed it. AVOID HIM!!!
DO NOT take this class. He knows the material but his lectures are all over the place. You end up having to teach yourself from the book.
The professor is a nice guy. Not an amazing teacher but the material was easy enough to understand. Annoying part was the quiz almost every class but he dropped lowest 5 and half are group quiz. He posts review for the exams before hand and the exams come almost straight from the review.
I like this guy, good sense of humor. There is a quiz every class, one individual and 2 group, so make sure you have a good group. His tests are all multiple choice 20 questions for the 3 midterms and 50 for the final. He does not grade homework, your grade is based on your individual score, group score and tests. You need a 60% to pass with a C.
Lecture is very quick and generalized that things are not explained in detail or understood the first time, so you need to read the book. Compared to other theoretical math professors, he doesn't give much homework. He doesn't concern about the student's learning and won't always answer questions that he already answered before.
Prof. Chien is a very picky grader. Make sure to answer questions in complete sentences. If you can avoid taking Introduction to Statistics with him, I would advise you to do so. It is suppose to be an easy A, but his grading does not allow it.
I actually really liked this professor, very clear lecturer. Anyone who didn't do well in this class is one of two things: not good at math, or never studied (which was me near the end of the semester). He made it very clear that the first third of the class was the easiest and the middle third was the hardest, and I agree. Homework not mandatory
He is a nice guy, and honestly funny. His class is extremely hard and he doesn't explain the problems he is doing. The test questions are straight from the homework. His grading is unreasonable and unfair. He does not curve test but he does curve your grade slightly. Beware of him because most students do not pass his classes.
His teaching skills are very poor. Lectures are from the book, but he teaches worse than the book. Memorizing the homework is the way to pass his tests. Must write complete sentences for the answer. It's not that he's hard, but his poor teaching ability makes him difficult to understand. In the end, I'm not taking another class with him.
I entered his class knowing very well the negative feedback that he has recieved, and that's the mindset you have to enter in too. His lectures are extremely boring and confusing at times; it's just better to learn of the book like I did. Also, be aware that for exams, he neither provides a study guide nor does he curve tests. Good luck!
Professor Chien actively works against the student's grades with his very lengthy and very time-constrained tests, and also doesn't curve. His lectures are often very confusing, and goes strictly by the book, but never explains any theorems or definitions further but expects us to understand. I hope I never have to take a class with him again.
I consider myself a fairly intelligent individual, and I usually ENJOY math courses, which I know is unusual... But this professor has been THE WORST I HAVE ENCOUNTERED (and I'm writing this as I graduate). He should not be allowed to teach Linear Algebra. He'll grade your tests like they're English papers, and stress you out WAYYYY too much. AVOID
I actually like this professor, I asked him to stay an extra 10 or so minutes a few times for office hours and he always waited for me to help explain things. His lectures are pretty easy to follow, at least in my opinion. Just really make sure to study for the tests, as 4 tests are worth 90% of your grade, and there isn't partial credit.
I started taking this course despite recommendations from friends to drop him. His lectures contribute nothing to the students understanding of the material. Exams used random questions and his response to low averages was to assign more homework instead of student feedback (ex: recorded lectures) which he deemed too hard for him to implement.
This professor is TERRIBLE. The exams are 90% of the grade he does not curve or give any bonus points or give a study guide. He is not good at teaching and his lectures make little to no sense. At the very last second he made the grade to get a C about 50%, but many people after the first exam, stopped paying attention as they had no way to pass.
Math 342 wasn't listed, but the class was unnecessarily hard. Tests were so heavily weighted that if you did poorly on one there was no chance of recovery. The main reason my classmates and I passed the class is because he lowered the passing grade to 50%. The lectures felt pointless as he read from the textbook. Avoid this professor if you can.
I love Prof Chien, he is such a funny person, but I don't agree with his lecture styles and I think that his teaching practices are archaic. I took his Math 441 class, and I am either going to fail or just pass. It sucks because I study so much but I cannot seem to pass any exams. He does curve the final class grade though.
Dude failed me. Not a man of his word. L professor with a super thick accent.
Show up to class and pass. He will answer questions in the middle of lecture. Other reviews on here are probably because his class is very exam-heavy to pass. Exams are easy if you show up to class and understand the material. He actually cares about the math and wants you to pass but you have to put in the effort to do so! Take Chien he is a 10.
I took Professor Chien for both Math 346 and 342. He is an excellent teacher and a very entertaining lecturer. He can be tough on the grading, but he is consistent with it. The test questions are straight from the homework. Show up to class and do the homework, and there should be no issues. He is a great guy and actually very funny.
WORST PROFESSOR I've ever taken. This class was my hardest class I've ever taken and his grading system was outrageous. He knocks down so may points for everything. AVOID him at all costs.
The professor's lectures can be hit-or-miss, but staying engaged and using helpful study tools like unstuck study really paid off. Textbook is a must, and you'll need to put in the work to pass the heavily weighted exams. Overall, a challenging but manageable class.
FOR CALC II Do not take professor Chien. Very hard to understand him and he talks all class long. Quizzes are taken at the end of every class, but he drops your worst 4 (but can't make them up). Uses web assign for weekly hw.
Dr. Chien yelled at a 16 year old student in a 400-level math class. He was upset that the student didn't understand the material. How does Dr. Chien have the audacity or courage to do that? It's so impressive that a 16 year old is there, but Dr. Chien doesn't even care. He doesn't show bias or favoritism for or against students, but this is wrong.
