Take this guy if you get the chance I loved his class he made it fun and was even cool enough to come have drinks after our final in celebration of the end of school.
Pick this teacher if your going with english comp II, his knowledge base that he shares is almost unfair at the low price of admission. Very VERY intelligent, but at the same time VERY down to earth and in tune with students needs. The class is easy if you payattention to his insightsand instruction
what a guy. kept me interested. Well spoken, kind, very intelligent, insightful and helpful. You will learn a lot about life in this class.
I agree that he knows what he is talking about, and is very concise and clear about what he is looking for from his students. I would definately take this professor again.
It has been an absolute delight for me to go to class; I feel like I'm actually gaining some knowledge here. Oh, I know I'm not supposed to have dirty thoughts about a professor but... Yeah, good class!
He is such a ****, and a bad teacher!
coe's a savage but it's a good class. take notes, go to class, turn your papers in on time and you'll do fine. last few weeks can be a bit stressful because of c-test, b and a papers all in the last 3 weeks or so. i learned more in this class than all of high school combined.
Coe is a very intelligent man; you would think that a good thing but b/c he is smart he assumes that his students are on the same level with him in analyzing Literature. I learned at lot from him, but English is not my best subject so the class can be difficult at times. I would take him again if I had the chance.
He's amazing. His classes are always extremely interesting and well thought out. He gives help when needed and is my fav teacher so far.

He apparently assigns more papers than the other teachers. I've heard other people have already taken their c test but we're just turning in our, supposedly, last paper.
I took Dr. Coe for 1301 and 1302, and this was an exceptional professor. There are about 5 essays in 1302, plus the C test, B paper, and A paper. Very clear, and for homework we had to read a short story for every single class to discuss. If you're bad at writing he's great at getting you on track. I really recommend this professor!
ok whoever out there that gave him a chilli totally lied. i thought he was going to be hot, but hes older =/
He's awesome! I totally miss his class... Be ready to work your butt off... that's all.
Pretty tough grader. I thought I was a great writer up until this class, then I got even better. He is pretty good, sometimes a bit harsh, but I think if you are serious about being a good writer his class is a good one to take.
Everyone who rated him well is a sucker and doesnt have a mind of your own. he forces his opinions on people, insults the class frequently, and is an pompous, arrogant jerk. I am a very good writer and maintained a good average and I still dropped because one can only be insulted so much. If you are a hs kid looking for a daddy figure, enjoy......
If English is your second language it is going to be hard to take his lit-re class. he grades extremly harsh, demands a lot, will never agree with your opinion. to get a B you have to work so hard that can't have time to study other classes. but you won't fall asleep because his lectures are very intersting. he let you have extra credit, and revise
I've gained more from Coe, than any other ACC profs. His class is challenging but you really learn alot. I thought I couldn't make it but i did. He really helps you think out side the box.
Be prepared to write several papers and attend class. During the first weeks he'll give out alot of handouts and will quiz on them.Following his guidelines in your papers is a MUST. He does have a strong opinion- so don't take his class if you're easily insulted. One-on-one he seems less harsh.Beginning at the CTest, his grading criteria gets easier
Very intimidating, strong opinoned, tough on grading, if your just trying to get core corriculm out of the way, i suggest another proffesor. Class is very intersting, he makes you think about stuff youve never paid attention to, but if your major isnt english, i dont suggest him.
Prof Coe. Is an excellent Prof. After being out of school 20 years I had a difficult time in both his 1301+1302 classes. He helped me out more than an average prof would because he is not average. He taught me how to become a better writer even though I am not majoring in Eng. I will admit it was tough for me but I squeaked out C's on both classess.
Dr. Coe is great. I went to class 3/4 of the time. I took it with my friend last semester.Dr. Coe took my papers in late, and accepted my "c" test. He helped me everytime I went to his office and went through the short stories with me to help me understand them. He is very sarcastic, and funny at the same time. Advise anyone to take compII with COE
Coe is an awesome professor, I wouldn't recommend him to someone who wants an easy A. He's a great professor to take if you want to improve your writing skills.
arrogant and challenging. If you are offended easily, stupid or a cheater don't take this class. Sometimes amusing but again, very arrogant.
demands only the best. he raises the bar when it comes to writing. you want to excell.
He was great!
Very difficult professor, but he will teach you a lot. I loved this class, but he can be irritating at times. He thinks he knows everything, and if you don't agree with his take on things he gets bent out of shape. If you put in the work you can get an A. Just don't think you can get an A by showing up. Every week we had a huge reading assignm
If you are a fresh out of high school, I would not take him as your first English class. I wouldnt take Coe again for any class but not because it was difficult, because he was extremly rude and feels as if nobody can amount to him. Im sorry but I learn better with professors I can have an actual conversation with.
He is amazing. Love him to death.Take him Take him . Take him.
What can I say, he is all that is man, he is all that is teacher, he is god, he is Coe.
He is a nice man, but his class is extremely difficult. He is a tough grader and very hard to please. Very difficult to make an A. If you want an A take someone else.
Best professor I've ever had. He has so much to offer to those who listen.
If you're serious about literature, you won't find a better professor. He may be tough, but he knows how to teach and offers so much!
took him for comp 1. He's pretty cool you learn some stuff but hasn't helped my writing. Other classes have success but no one in my class has. Pretty tough to make an A.
Great professor with high standards of excellence, and a low threshold for immaturity. Don't take this class if you don't want to read and analyze literature...it's kind of the point. Testing is difficult and he wants LOTS of detailed recall. He expects that you can write at the college Sophomore level. Not watered down education for slackers.
He gave great lectures and gave the opportunity to be creative in the writing process which is a big plus in my book. His quizzes were extremely hard but in the end after almost everybody did poorly on the majority of the quizzes he dropped them all together. Over all I had a great time in his class, he did make English Comp fun.
He is a great teacher but he doesn't mess around. His class was very hard for as I don't handle paper writing well. If writing sucks for you find another prof. If writing is your thing, you'll love him. I learned a lot from him in the end!
He is a pretty ridiculous teacher. The only way for you to ever ask questions is either during class or after. He does not answer emails. No matter how many you send. He is tough, and pretty arrogant.
Has to be the first ACC professor that ever really made me respect him. Yes, he's strict. He has very strong opinions and sometimes he comes off as a little arrogant, but he is a man that knows exactly what he's doing. If you just want to go through painlessly, don't choose him. If you want actual substance in your class, go Coe.
Coe is a good professor but he is very challenging. Do not take this class unless you are ready to work hard.
I was worried about this class based on reviews here, but I am VERY happy my schedule would not allow a change (made an A and enjoyed it). Yes, you have to read. Yes, you have to write. Yes, you have to do both effectively and at a level expected from a college student. Coe wants you to demonstrate actual thought, not turn in book reports.
Heard many complaints about Dr. Coe during my semester in his class. He is a tough teacher and he does have an attitude but he is the best prof I have had so far. Very opinionated and highly sarcastic. His lectures are full of dry humor that I found pretty entertaining. I enjoyed this class my final grade was an A.
More importantly, he knew that GPAs don't typically transfer from a Community College. So, if you get chance to take his class and you?re smart, then I hope this rating will be carried on by future ?C? and above students. I give Professor Coe a [sic] A+.
I took Professor Coe back in 2006. Honestly, he was the first good professor I had. I failed his class the first time and got a "C" the second. He is the first professor I was able to build a somewhat personal student-teacher type relationship with. He pushed me and I'm not just talking about attempting to 'master' English.... Professor Coe is willing to explain things and forces you to think. He is very arrogant, very demanding, very strict. He will not respond to emails ever or post grades on blackboard. Not very many items counts for a grade, and we have already started on the second paper, not knowing how we did or how he grades from the first.
I liked the guy personally, but his classd was very hard. He expects you to already be an expert in all form of english, but that is why I was taking his clas, I'm no expert. Papers take up the bulk of the grade for the semester. Be prepared for a lot of reading and analyzing!
Coe is pretty tough. He is a very intelligent person and has a lot to teach you. The class ended up being fun and rewarding toward the end. Just tough it out - you will learn a lot from his class and what you experience.
Dr. Coe is an amazing teacher. He is not easy, but last time I checked we were all in college, right? He cares about his students and is willing to help if you have the guts to approach him in his office. E-mail is useless, but then again somethings just can't be taught in 2 - 3 sentences. Go see him and learn something!
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken and I usually make A's in my English classes. He is very arrogant and is harsh when it comes to grading. He also doesn't back up why you received the grade you got all of the time and makes it seem like he didn't even read your work. He expects you to be a "master of English". Very hard class!

I had him over the summer for Lit II and he was NOT what I expected. You can tell he loves his job, but he expects you to be an English major. He does not explain exactly what he wants for his papers so the majority of the class made C's on both papers AND tests(tests ALL short answers) I enjoyed his insight and lectures, though :)
Wonderful teacher, extremely smart. Would definitely recommend him if you're up for a challenge.
Honestly, I disliked him while I was in his class. It wasn't until afterwards I realized how much I learned in his class. He's fun to listen to and always has a witty remark. Some other comments claimed he doesn't back up his grade; he will, but you have to ask him. In retrospect he, by a long shot, is the best professor I've had thus far.
Very cool teacher. You can tell he loved his job. However, he seemed to expect you to love literature as much as he does. Class discussions are awesome if you get involved.
Currently in his class. Coe expects you to know literature! He doesn't believe in multiple choice, so quizzes are going to be fill in the blank(HARD). So he reviews your 1000 word papers telling you what to fix, and then you correct it and turn it in where he then marks your paper wrong on other parts.paper grades so far: C C/D and B-
Lectures were interesting, but he doesn't seem to know what he wants for his work. One time, I went to his office and asked for clarification on what he wanted me to revise. I wrote it down and revised as ordered. Learning Lab approved, turned in and failed. He wanted something comp. diff. He also makes up words that Learn-lab won't know...
Even though this class is pretty difficult, Coe gives you the tools you need in order to do great in his class. Without a doubt the best teacher I've had.
Very good professor. Anytime you get a prof that really loves what he does, and you're ready to learn, you will soar. Dr. Coe gives you every opportunity to make an A. The rough draft corrections are invaluable. They will add a full letter grade to your paper so turn them in. I would absolutely take him again.
Dr. Coe loves his job! I enjoyed his class a great deal, bit English isn't my cup of tea so therefore the class was hard for me. After his class I feel like I've learned a lot from him and about time management with all the essays.
Coe is a good teacher. He's VERY strict! Like's everything done HIS way. But as long as you do what he says, and stay on his good side, you'll do just fine. It was hard to get an A, but the class isn't terribly difficult as long as you DO THE WORK! I learned alot from him and he's very much like a university teacher. Which is a GOOD thing!
Coe is VERY strict on his reading schedule. Make sure you read the story(ies) more than twice. Yes, it is alot of work, but it's what you need to do in order to make a good grade! He gives you pop quizzes if he feels like the class hasn't read the story. Which are short answer. So be prepared. He teaches the material very well and gives you a bible
I have never had my self-expression stifled as much as I did in Dr. Coe's class. It was unclear from day one the expectations for the class. We were not allowed revisions for our papers, and expected to be as enamored with english as he was. I really went the extra mile in his course and had a 4.0 with 30 CH prior to this section. Now 3.75 with a C.
The majority of these reviews are pretty spot on. Does not answer e-mails. Hard grader. In my experience, you will not get assistance unless you show up at his office, which makes it very difficult to track/remember the advice you were given. But he is passionate about English, so if you enjoy writing and a challenge, this is the teacher for you.
Lectures are good.Gives you everything you need. Hard Grader. Not a very nice guy (cusses a lot in class). He have high expectations-expects students to write a well-college paper.Reading schedule is strict. Stay on his good side or he'll pick on you the rest of class.does not trust people. He don't like excuse.
Knows his stuff, very good at what he does. But not best for a beginning intro class. Very hard and a bit too critical. Best for advanced classes. Still over all knowledgeable and perfect for the advanced classes =)
Dr. Coe's English Comp.II is very hard. This is not a blow off class! He is, however, very helpful and gives you a 2 chapter manual (that he wrote) on how to analyze the short stories. His quizzes are easy if you put in the hours to study and actually read. He is a tough grader but if you try your best and give effort, he gives partial credit.
He is a difficult professor but if you are expecting to not learn in college, then you shouldn't be in school. Otherwise, he is extremely knowledgeable and can help you refine your skills in deductive and analytical reading immensely.
Prof Coe can across very harsh but once you get to know him he is just passionate about teaching. Ask him for help and you will do wonderful. Utilize his office hours, he is much more supportive when he sees a student is putting forth effort.
WONDERFUL Teacher. You will work hard, but if you ask for help he will help you. Be sure to utilize office hours.
Dr. Coe is the best English teacher I've ever had. I had him for Comp I and now again for Comp II, I will take any class he gives...he's worth all the extra hours & strict rules! But it is my strong suggestion that you don't take him if you're looking for a blow-off class!
Dr. Coe is a brilliant mind. In his class you will learn tons about analyzing short stories. His office hours are a must, but if you use them he takes that into consideration when grading. I revised each paper once before turning in and again after he grades. Made a B. Highly recomend if English is a big part of your major
Fails to show to office hours and will not email you if he is not going to be attending that day. I went to 2 office hours per paper and still received "D" papers. I put in the effort but he failed as as professor if I'm getting a D. You leave his office still confused. Will call your cell if you drop to argue with your decision. Ridiculous.
Not a class for the feint of heart. He lays out what he wants, and you have to do it. Flexible paper subjects, but he will grade honestly and without coddling you. Has offered revision opportunities, but no EC. Be prepared to go in to class and office hours for help, as it will bolster your grade. Best for natural writers, not those who struggle.
Amazing prof. Any grade obtained in this class will be earned. He doesn't use e-mail, but he is great about being available during his office hours. Only downside... when canceling a class, he does so via a note on the door. And when you drive 45 minutes each way for the class, that can be kind of a pain.
Not an easy class/prof. He takes attendance seriously, random quizzes/worksheets so make sure to read. Expects you to go over and beyond. 2 papers, couple tests and quizzes, a lot of reading (it's a lit class). Doesn't post grades up. He's a funny guy though, ends class early a lot. Do not get caught with your phone.
Such a terrible teacher. It is mandatory to see him before every paper you turn in, and whenever I talked to him he looked it over and said just fix these few things and it will be good. When I got my papers back they were C's and D's, and I'm a good writer. He will also deduct if he doesn't agree with you on certain topics. Avoid if possible.
He is the worst! get points deducted if he does not agree with what you are writing. he does not clarify on what he expects you are just supposed to assume what needs to be done. He is EXTREAMLY unorganized. I do not recommend him I am a great writer have gotten A's in all my previous English classes, but this guy is just flat out horrible
Just a Horrible professor. I personally do not recommend him. The whole class this semester has struggled and its down to just few students and it is pointless to try to talk to him because he is absolutely no help. I know college is not easy but this professor makes thing impossible specially because he constantly changes the schedule.
Only a handful of people have gotten above a C on all of the papers written does not really tell you how to fix your problems, just tells you to fix them. Quizzes are very difficult as well a small percentage of people actually passed them. Very difficult teacher in general. FIND AN ALTERNATE PROFESSOR.
TERRIBLE professor. Very unprofessional. I tried to stick it out in his class, but ultimately had to drop it. Find another professor. He has little man syndrome.
People find a different teacher. He is worthless. He will go into class treating it like his counseling session. He is very unorganized, changes things constantly. He is the kind of professor that thinks everything revolves around himself and his class, which you will not learn anything in.To get and A is impossible! AND you don't learn anything
I wouldn't recommended a fresh out of high school student take Dr. Coe's class, UNLESS you have extremely thick skin. He comes across as rude and demeaning. However,if you go to his office hours he can be very helpful and pleasant. I think he just likes students that go the extra mile, and has no time for anyone else.
Here's the thing, he claims to be sarcastic, but it's not sarcasm, it's a textbook case of someone being passive-aggressive. For the love of God do NOT disagree with him, he will find plenty of reasons why you are wrong. He may be very intelligent but he is also mad at the world for still being at a community college. FORGET about getting an A or B
Horrible teacher. Would not recommend. I am a straight A student, and this class completely threw off my GPA. He does NOT give out A's or B's. No matter how hard you try. He definitely was not grading as it was an English comp 1 class. Avoid if possible.
Condescending, unorganized and unhelpful. Hes cancelled class at the last minute multiple times, and refuses to give out anything above a C or B. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone.
He was an awesome professor. Yes be willing to work very hard on your assignments. With him there are not perfect papers, & be prepared to make corrections on your paper. MAKE SURE YOU ATTEND CLASS and use his office hours given. He is a nice and intelligent professor that wants to help you as long as you want to help yourself.
Awesome professor that wants to help you as long as you want to help yourself. Be prepared to work and attend class. Use the office hours to get great tips on how he wants assignments to be done.
Do not take his class! I am an English major and hated it! I never got anything above a C in his class and last semester in lit a received an A on every single paper from another teacher. I read the reviews on this site and still thought it would be okay, boy was I wrong. The worst part about it is he doesn't give you any feedback whatsoever!!
Very passionate about literature and writing, so much so that it is almost a distraction as he goes on tangents. However, Coe was very fair, helpful and understanding. While his grading can be rather subjective, if you do exactly as he says, take his advice on everything and are not an idiot, you should have no problem getting an A.
I thought Dr. Coe was a great professor. Some people have said that it is impossible to get an A but that isn't true. Just don't expect to get an A for a paper that isn't an A paper.
I love this professor! He changed my life!!!!!
English is not my native language, but Professor Coe helped me tremendously to succeed in his class. He required a healthy balance between following structure, guidelines and freedom of ideas. My writing greatly improved under his guidance. Wonderful teacher !
Dr. Coe is so awesome. My writing skill was significantly improved when I took this class. Working hard and dropping by his office frequently will make the class easier.
SO AWFUL. Made my semester miserable. Did not communicate or respond to emails. Was very rude when asked for clarification. Worst teacher I've ever had. Do not take his class.
Please do not take this professor. I had him for an online class and it was a horrible experience. He is terrible at responding to emails and when he does, they are less than helpful. The work load is completely doable! But it's hard to do if you have any questions at all.
Had an awesome GPA and never made anything less than an A in a english class before this class! Coe doesn't respond to emails and when he does it's two weeks later with a rude remark. He grades on his opinion as well.
Horrible instructor. I would never take him again for anything.
He got sick and was unable to be in contact with his class for 2 weeks. He starting postponing and then cancelling assignments. Our first exam was to be a mix of mc, fill in blank and short answer. Showed up for exam and it was 100 short answers. And it covered 4 stories that were not on the syllabus for this exam. Everyone failed.
I took professor Coe's British Literature: Anglo Saxon through 18th Ceuntry class online, and just barely passed. He did not stick to his syllabus rules, and any mistakes he blamed on his students instead of taking ownership and can be very rude. He also DOES NOT communicate like on time or even at all. I don't recommend taking his classes.
He's the prof you want to take if you're transferring or if you have a genuine interest in English literature. He is always in his office helping students so go to him for help and he will really really help you get your essay score up. Such a great prof LOOK FOR SHORT STORIES ONLINE. DON'T BUY TEXTBOOK
This professor has a god-complex, don't bother asking for reviews for the test. In fact, don't ask any questions ever. Expecting an AB? Don't. If you're lucky and I mean really lucky you'll scrape a C. Every English teacher at ACC has horrible things to say about him. To be honest, he grades on a Master level, save yourself, skip him
His way or no way
This guy ultimately taught me how to become a better writer. If you take his class, you will write, write, and write some more. Papers are due every week, and you will be expected to read and analyze short stories or novels. He's a fantastic teacher and will go in depth with you about what he's looking for in a paper. Comes off tough, but cares.
Prof. Coe's class was one of my first taken at ACC. It was challenging, entertaining, and a class I enjoyed attending. The material was exciting so I would have liked more assignments. I loved listening to him lecture. He is hilarious. If you take him, you will have his reading and writing guidelines to look forward to. Inspirational.
Took him for online Brit Lit and it was the worst mistake I've made. I would email him long thought out emails that NEEDED responses and to this day he hasn't replied. For awhile I thought maybe he wasn't responding since he died, but looked in the obituaries and no "David Coe." Overall he's a pain and made a class with enjoyable content miserable.
I took Coe's online Brit Lit class and it was the hardest class I've ever taken. I am a straight A student and barely passed this class with a C. He makes you read ALOT and he is a tough grader when it comes to essays. He is not very helpful when you email him with questions. I would not take this class if grades matter to you.
I took English 2322 online and it was overall a good course. If you do the work and put some time into it you will pass. Minimal effort got me a C. He is a tough grader on the long paper, but again, if you try you can pass. He answers emails in a timely manner and explains things very well when you ask questions. Straight-forward course.
If you're looking for a cop-out class, this isn't it. While Professor Coe is tough as nails, he opens up a whole new way to look at literature. He really makes you think and he is very insightful. His teaching style is not for everyone. When I took his tests, they were not multiple choice or matching like many of us grew up with.
The tests and essays are really difficult and his grading can be kind of harsh. You are expected to read A LOT of stories in the book and be prepared to take a quiz over them next class. You should try to remember every detail. You are definitely going to need to go to him for help on the essays. He's a funny and kind guy though!
Dr. Coe is incredible. I had an unexpected emergency in the middle of the semester, and he worked with me to make sure I got everything in. He provides great feedback and insight in to your essays so you can improve them for revisions. Seems tough at first, but he's a really great prof.
It's a lot of work but you actually learn in this class instead of just getting a grade. Not recommended for the lazy or people just looking for an easy A/B.
He is a tough grader, but that's only because he practically gives writes the essay for you when he lectures, so take notes. He also allows you to rewrite for up to ten more points. All but one of the short stories were public domain, so you might not need the book, but selection may change and some of the online versions have errors/missing text.
I was kind of irritated by his godawful textbook excerpts that he gave us. He was writing his own textbook, and honestly, it was a pompous wall of text that I wouldn't ever make anybody read. I dropped the class after a few weeks due to an emotional crisis, but I can say that I was better off for it.
Hardest English class I've ever taken. Lots of reading and analyzing. Very harsh grader but Dr. Coe is helpful during office hours.
Very tough if you try to do it on your own. Visit his office and put in the necessary 4-5 hours a week studying, writing, drafting, and rewriting and you'll walk away with an A, no problem. He really does care and wants to help students succeed, but he can't do much for the students who are just looking for an easy English credit.
Took this in a half semester in the summer. I'd say about half the class ended up dropping the class. I found it pretty difficult, but if you go to office hours, Prof Coe will help you out a ton. Quizzes over every short story read for homework could be nitpicky at times. Overall, if you are willing to put in the work he is willing to help.
ENGLISH MAJORS ONLY He grades tough, but that's because he tells you everything you need to know during the lecture, including the essays. TAKE NOTES (or record). Also covers the history around the literature, which is fascinating. Read the assignments or you will fail. Don't take if you struggle with writing, you have to be skilled to pass.
Dr. Coe's ENG1 class was my first (summer) college class I've taken and I absolutely loved it. He is an amazing professor and he is really approachable when you need to get help with a paper. He makes sure that he helps all students and really does care about each one of us succeeding in his class. If you work hard on your and listen, you pass!
He is a tough professor, however, it's due to his love of literature! Yes he is picky and will make you work for the grade you want but if you go see him to discuss every paper while you are writing he will push you to do your best. He made me feel much more confident in writing (which i always hated.) He is a super kind guy and very funny.
Make sure you don't fail a quiz too soon or get the "subjective" questions wrong because he'll inmediately assume the worst of you and treat you as such for the rest of the semester. Has a superior, god complex and ego the size of Canada. Dont bother emailing for help or worksheets. He won't answer. Meanest, and worst teacher of my college career.
THIS TEACHER IS INSANELY DIFFICULT!!! Prof. Coe is the sort of professor you find in the dungeon of Harvard. Ridiculous grading and constant reading at home. This class will be on your mind through the entire semester. Stress meltdowns and panic attacks are very common. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
He expects VERY high level writing and comprehension skills, but if you ask him for help and feedback on papers BEFORE you turn them in, it helps an unbelievable amount. I thought I was going to fail but I ended up receiving a B in the class which is fine with me. He is a really cool dude that wants to see you be passionate about literature.
My favorite professor I've ever had. Took his class twice (diff areas of study)! Coe wants you to think deeply about what you read and form original opinions. If you actually TRY it will be a very fulfilling class. Don't take this class if you are a crap student because he will be a crap professor back. Apply yourself and do the readings!!
Rarely explains essay guidelines. He thinks he's super funny and has a bit of a god complex. Didn't notify any of us when he cancelled class.
Dr. Coe is an awesome teacher. He's a tough grader but only because he wants to see you improve. He gives really good feedback and is very clear on what he expects. As long as you pay attention and make an effort, you'll succeed!! Would definitely take this professor again!!!!
Professor Coe is an awesome teacher and a super tough grader. He is a bit a witty at times and comical in his lectures. He truly wants to create better writers. A++
Hardest class I have ever taken but I learned a lot.
the best
Gold star for worst professor. I took his class in the Fall. Material is really easy if you read a lot, otherwise, start reading and reviewing. Read, review, and read again. Don't take him, he's possibly the worst speakers and graders. His lectures are not on point. He's shaky and unclear. He's not motivating and not one of the best. I'd give a 0.
College is not a place to go if you just want to get by in life. There are many professors that let you slip through the cracks, and make college a smooth ride. If you plan on moving up in this world, you have to take this class. Dr. Coe will be a professor to remember. Plus, you get your moneys worth. He made me laugh, and cry. GREAT CLASS.
Thought English2 was going to be a breeze since I got by barely doing anything in Engl 1. NOT THE CASE! Quizzes almost every day over nightly readings. And papers are graded pretty harshly! He makes it clear what he expects with a guideline paper, and anything less won't receive a good grade. Use his office hours and proof read everything twice!!
This guy has no idea what he is doing! He teaches a community college class like it is a graduate school class. Would not advise taking him if you want hours of headaches trying to figure out his grading policies.
He is unavailable during office hours and unwilling to assist students with questions.
He's not bad. Go to class. Read the material. Do some research and ask questions if he's available. This is not an easy class if you do not read the assigned readings. I took him in the Fall and he challenges you to think outside the box. I struggled with his papers until my final one! While he can be a pain, it's actually for our own benefit!
He is the TOUGHEST paper grader I've ever had. He does however give lots of resources to help write your papers, but expects you to read his mind and deliver content he expects. Very scary class if you have a high GPA you'd like to keep. Daily readings and quizzes. He is nice if you are nice and put forth effort. A's require blood, sweat, and tears
He is a very tough grader. He doesn't just want you to spit out the obvious answer but he wants you to really dig deep into the literary work and come up with your own conclusions. Go see him in his office hours and bounce around your ideas with him. He is actually very nice and wants you to succeed. He will make you a better writer, guaranteed.
Prof. Coe was one of the best professors I've ever had. I took him for not only Comp 2, but Brit Lit as well the very next semester. He doesn't give out an easy A, he really makes you work for it, but you will become a better writer by the time you leave his class. If you're willing to put in the work for his class, I definitely recommend him.
All we did was write essays in this course. He hardly has any lectures and grades like we are at a university. You're required basically to teach yourself in the course for the quiz and test materials. I wasn't at all prepared for the final exam. He's a great person just a hard professor. He isn't afraid to speak his mind so just be prepared.
If you are looking for an easy english class he is not the one. Random quizzes and watched a movie and never discussed again. You will have a vocab test and gives you the review a week before to memorize 500 words. Although he lets you turn in a rough draft and gives you feedback, then a final and you get back to do corrections, Very hard grader
He relied heavily on essays, yet never taught us how to write a "college essay" as he put it. All he did was tell us it was wrong and gave vague answers when we asked him to explain.
He is an amazing professor. He will help you become a better writer and that will help anyone out in their future courses. His lectures are awesome! I wish I recorded them. If you want to improve your writing he is the one to take!
I took a total of 3 classes from Dr. Coe. I took them a few years ago, but I have to say that he gave the best college experience I have ever had. This man taught me how to analyze and write a proper literary critique. I highly suggest him if you are looking to major in English. He is a tough grader, but he is more than willing to help you.
Dr. Coe will prepare you for the rest of your college career if you pay attention to what he is teaching. He'll make you a good writer. He's tough but he's funny. He's also caring and willing to help you if you're struggling. I wish I could take all his classes.
Coe is a rediculously tough grader. I spend hours a night on my essays and have yet to get over a 75 on one. He spends weeks talking about the wrong way to write an essay, but literally never mentions how to correctly write an essay. If you want consistent Cs for work that takes you hours a night then Coe is your guy.
Awful.. just awful. Failed me even though I passed the final lol and made Cs on essays
Loses concentration during lecture, does not entertain any other view point other than his own narrow one, does not provide proper tools for success such as direct instruction. Tech wary! No note-taking on tablets or laptops! Self indulgent lectures that are aimless. When analyzing stories, makes assumptions that are reflective of his own old ideas
I feel this professor is very rude and arrogant . His assignments are hard to understand. I didn't get his teaching technique or his lecturing. He was very condescending in the way he talked to the class. I would not recommend him to any student.
THIS MAN IS THE WORST PROFESSOR OF ALL TIME. IF YOU DON'T SHARE HIS POLITICAL VIEWS ON AN ESSAY THAT HE MAKES YOU WRITE THAT HE REQUIRES BE POLITICAL, YOU ARE GUARANTEED TO FAIL NO QUESTIONS ASKED. SWITCH OUT IMMEDIATELY OR WAIT ANOTHER SEMESTER IF THERE ARE NO OTHER TEACHERS TO SWITCH OUT OF!!!
Professor Coe is an amazing teacher with tons of experience in life. Hes by no means an easy grade and wants to raise the bar and show his students what they are really capable of. If you pay attention and consider his feedback you will not have a problem in his class. Hes a great guy and is very helpful and understanding.
Professor Coe is a very tough grader, but he is willing to help you as long as you try. He will spend time with you outside of class to help with any problem you're having and will help you improve. You just gotta try. also, i am pretty sure cussing is encouraged in his classes.
THIS PROFESSOR WAS SOOOOOO AWFUL!! He is a very tough grader and VERY opinionated. He is willing to help after class if you need it but don't try to have your own opinion because it doesn't matter to him. He seems like a caring professor but then he turns around and acts like he is your only class. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS IT'S NOT WORTH THE STRUGGLE!
After two years in college, being on both the Dean's list and the Chancellor's list, I'm disappointed to report that I received a "B" from Coe. My other "B" was in Chemistry. Do yourself a favor and choose another instructor. I took ENG 1301 at the university and received a high "A". I'm always up for a challenge, but this was ridiculous.
Dr. Coe's class was an essay heavy class, and for the average student he is a tough grader. But if you meet with him, he gives you excellent feedback & wants you to succeed. Everything he tells you is for a reason & he gives you plenty of time to keep up with workload. Lectures were never boring, and it was obvious that he's passionate about them.
This is an easy class to pass as long as you complete the work, he tells you from the start you will end with either an A or B. That being said he does not post grades and gives very little feedback on papers. HEAVY reading and lots of pop quizzes. His opinion to topics is the only one that matters which makes it difficult to express in writing.
Although this class was the hardest class I have ever taken, I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you expect to get by doing the bare minimum... you are WRONG. I always wrote papers last minute in 1301 and got As easily with other profs. Coe is totally different and destroyed my papers in the beginning. But I learned SO much and I'm grateful for that.
his criticisms on essays don't make sense. the way he critiques is vague and contradicts his other critiques. basically this dude is super strict at grading and does not offer his help. he takes forever to email back and when he does it is vague and unhelpful. I usually get A's, I got a B in the class.
Coe is definitely available outside of class time to meet with students who are interested in help in any subject. Teaches with a hands on approach so if you take the time to show interest, he will give you all the help you need to get an A.
DO NOT TAKE. Currently in his class right now, one of the worst I've ever been in. I'm trying to cut him some slack because COVID has affected everyone, but he hasn't replied to ANYONE'S emails in almost a WEEK, and the feedback he gives on our essays reeks of condescension. Sorry, but his opinion is the only one that matters
This is the most amazing professor I have ever had. He has an absolute passion for Teaching And draws you in.
Engaging professor with a passion for the subject. The lectures are worth attending to grasp the material. Utilize unstuck AI and the assigned textbook for effective study prep.
