I love history, Dr. Coles and Dr. Welch make it fun!
Funniest class you'll ever have. Anyone with food in class will get his attention and he'll start telling Mountain Dew and other food related stories. Definatly makes you laugh and enjoy the class.
Great Teacher, he is hilarious and makes the class interesting!
Hilarious, great guy and pretty good looking, I wish I wasn't graduating so I could have him for another class
big ol teddy bear-loves his FL football & tells great stories
Awesome sense of humor and will drop anything to help you out in a heartbeat... my favorite prof so far!
I've had at least 5 classes with Dr. Coles, and he is hands down the coolest teacher ever!! His rantings are hilarious and you'll learn a lot.
Dr. Coles is very helpful and his classes are extremely enjoyable. He makes history fun. I hope I have many more classes with him.
Dr. Coles is an awesome teacher, with a great sense of humor and personality. He really makes class enjoyable!
He is a great professor, very interesting.
Dr. Coles is really funny! I look forward to his classes everyday!!
He's a funny guy. I love going to History class.
Always avalible outside of class. Great jokester and easily knocked off topic by his own randomness.
Dr. Coles is awesome and if you do not want to go to class to listen to him swear or whatever else he talks about then you should just drop out of school.
Great class. Very entertaining. I actually like taking history with him.
He is the Best! We love you Dr. Coles!
Best class teacher at longwood, and he's hot
He is the best teacher at Longwood. He looks Teddy Roosevlet and he can be my teddy bear any night!
Excellent teacher! I love your classes Dr. Coles
great
Always has a smile on his face! And loves to go off subject!
Dr. Coles Rocks
Dr. Coles made me like coming to history class. Everything he does, says, teaches is interesting! I graduated last year but will never forget him! The most down to earth professor you will EVER have! Take this class even if you don't have to!
His snide comments are often not helpful. He's okay unless he comes into class in a foul mood. Then he is sarcastic and rude.
Dr. coles is hands down one of the best professors at Longwood. He is exciting, fun, and makes his classes interesting. He is a great advisor who will help you with anything. His love for military history is unsurpassed. He is Civil War Santa!
Ask him about the Mountain Dew!!!
Great professor, I can't wait to take one of his classes again!
Dr. Coles is great! His classes aren't too easy or too hard...and every once in a while he keeps things interesting by straying off topic ;) I think he's probably the best history professor at Longwood.
If you ever get a chance you have to take one of his classes, the man is awesome...just don't mess with his food ;)
If I had taken a class with Dr Coles earlier than senior year, I would've switched to a history major. Made a 9am class exciting to go to, funny and sarcastic-i wish I could've taken more classes with Dr. Coles
Dr. Coles has to be the best history teacher ever, both in and out of Longwood.
Dr. Coles is an AMAZING professor. . .easy to get a long with and actually is one of the few that care about you as a student rather than a number. . .
Dr. Coles is awesome! If your electricity goes out and you call his office to leave a message, he'll still be there...even if it is 9:30 p.m. So give him a call!! p.s. you will still have to take your test...so don't count on getting out of it!!
He's the****. Yes, he does try to fail you with his hard and thinking required tests, but his class atmosphere makes up for it.
Coolest professor ever, especially if you like history. Great lecturer, easy to take notes from & tells hilarious random stories which makes class more fun to go to. TAKE COLES!
This class is really great. I love Dr. Coles and his teaching styles and his toys and his stories. I'm waiting for him to bring his tank into class. Make sure you ask him about the Mountian Dew.
only been in his class for a lil over a week and already i'm in love! his teaching style is fun & informative. too bad he's married he's definately ****... professor i'd love to ****. HOT HOT HOT in a Dennis the Menace kind of way. I know u ladies hear me
I had Dr. Coles three times while I was at Longwood.I minored in history just so I could take his class when my regular histories credits were over.I loved everything about him and he taught me things that I'm using today and for that I will alwayslovehim
Man that one submission that speaks negatively is really just wrong. . .The person who wrote that is an a . . hole. . .Dr. Coles is the BEST PROFESSOR EVER. . .DON'T HATE :)I would STRONGLY recommend classes from him!
(Dr. Coles, the chili pepper is for you) Dr. Coles is a great prof! I enjoyed both the classes I had with him and I look forward to seeing more of him. He is very personable and makes class both fun and informative.
I love this man! He is so considerate and laid back all the things I like in a teacher. The tests are a little hard, but you get used to them and his papers, you must be very specific, but he if you have any questions at all he's always open for you! Take this class! You'll want to major in history.
His tests were hard but he made the class worthwhile. Definitly take some classes from him.
is very down to earth amd has an awsome teaching style
Dr. Coles has been my favorite professor at Longwood since I was a freshman a LONG time ago.He makes his classes fun.I'm graduating in about a week and a half, but I will miss the big man. Now, whoever happened to call him hot in a Dennis the Menace kinda way...whoa girl...haha...nuthin but luv Doc.
I LOOOVE this man. He was an excellent teacher, he cracked me up. I like his style of teaching. It's different, but fun. Take the right notes and ace his tests. Some people don't understand his humor, but he is definitely NOT a backstabber and NOT selfish!!!
I have taken almost all his upper level classes and I did my internship under this man. He is great. Tests are hard but once you know what he looks for they are easy, but you have to study. Will do anything to help someone out, as long as your not one of those repeat offenders. Its fun to go in his office and play with the toys he has in there.
This man will help you as much as he can. All you have to do is take the time to ask for it. Follow the study guides and you'll be fine. I liked him so much the first time I took him a second. It helps when you're having a rough day to go to his class.
Dr. Coles is a great teacher for the GenEd history courses, but he gets more and more fun the more classes you have with him...one of the few professors that I actually miss!!! :o)
makes class fun and livens up things with his sense of humor on the subject. makes jokes on kids in class but they take it good
The greatest professor on campus
I am an alumni from Longwood and Dr. Coles is by far the best professor I have ever had. Not only does he know his material inside and out, but he takes genuine interest in his students. I wouldn't be where I am today without him.
Dr. Coles is an AMAZING professor. He actively engages his students and he does take a geniune interest in his students. Dr. Coles is the only professor who point blank told me "You have a basic Longwood Problem- OVER INVOLVEMENT SYNDROME. . .and he was right! I didn't realize that after one class with him my sophmore year, that he would still remember me as a student. I can't believe he knew EVERY aspect of my life at Longwood. If you have a chance to take his Civil War class in the summer.
I love him. By far the best history teacher ever. hes fun, has fun toys, and he cares about the students. His tests are tough but follow the studyguides and study ahead of time. Worth taking a class with this great man and teacher!
Dr. Coles has to be the best professor in the History deptarment at Longwood. I teach history now and I remember how Dr. Coles conducted his classes and I try to emulate his teaching style. He was my advisor and I could always count on him to be there to help me out when I needed advice. He greatly influenced my life and I thank him for that.
He was very well organized and his lectures were never hard to understand. He helps you pay attention and is very dynamic. He's definitely a great professor!
he takes a little while to get used to. I didn't like him at first, but he really grew on me. He's a cool guy, and he's willing to help. I would take his class again!
Hahaha - Dr. Coles is hilarious! ...But don't tick him off - that won't end well for you. :D
Having taken previously taken him for HIST222 and not liked his teaching that much, I was apprehensive. However, this class was very fun, perhaps due to the smaller size (about 15). We went on 2 archives field trips which were very fun. Now when I see him around he speaks to me like an old friend. Would recommend!!
By far the best teacher i've ever had. He is my adviser and has been my teacher twice already. He is hilarious and extremely easy to talk to. Whenever i'm in ruffner i always stop by his office to say hello. His class is pretty hard but it is definitely worth it.
He is possibly the funniest teacher I have ever had. His tests are not that difficult just take notes and read the text and you will do well, his essays are a little rough though. His style of teaching keeps the students awake during class, and he has a story for just about everything. He is always available to extra help too!
Great proff, hates the word "however" don't use it, other than that cynical and grouchy. Frigging hilarious.Loves to be called "Dr. K"
Dr. Coles is the absolute HOTTEST professor to have EVER lived. His intense good looks, suave voice, and utter brilliance and mastery of the subject made class a delight! Learning is a lot easier when the professor is so easy on the eyes! He certainly makes all the girls swoon... so dreamy!!
Took this course online. DO NOT TAKE IT. I'm sure he's a fabulous professor in person, but it does NOT translate over the Internet. He was useless when asked questions, the tests were too hard and covered material not in the text book or power points, and he graded arbitrarily. So frustrating and I don't feel like I learning anything.
LOVEEEEE HIM! He is my advisor and makes class fun and inviting for everyone. He sets up study groups and has clear expatiations of the class that anyone can meet.
This guy is the best you can ask for in the department of History. He makes you work your tail off but it's worth it. If you care about the work you'll pass, but he hates sloppiness! Read, do the work, and don't be afraid to ask for help. He's easy to reach.
This class was terrible. I thought it would be an easy Gen Ed to get out of the way during the summer but I was wrong. Tests are hard, most of the time the highest grade was a B+. If you are trying to get an A do not take this class. Hard grader on Writing assignments and discussion boards.
This was an awesome course and I thoroughly enjoyed taking it. I must say the professor is a bit hard but as long as you put forth a little effort, study, and devout time to studying which one should do in all cases, an A can be assured. Nothing is just handed to you on a silver platter, you have to work for it.
Anyone who claims this professor is terrible is insane. He is by far one of the best Historians I have ever come across and the man knows his stuff. The Vietnam class I took was exceptional. Nothing comes easy to those who are not willing to work for it.
So I went through this to see if thereof other people who had struggled taking Dr. Cole's course .. apparently not so I found it necessary that I share my experience. I took this online : DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.I am sure this maybe a good class to take in person and he is very helpful, but on canvas I asked questions & he doesn't help. HARD GRADER
Dr. Coles is a great history professor. He explains everything to the point. He primarily uses powerpoints, or lecture to teach but he is very effective! Read the book, it will help you! I love this guy he made my experience at Longwood even better! Just note that his tests are hard, but study and you will do great!
This is not an easy A, but if you take good notes, pay attention, and keep up on the readings, you've got a solid shot. If he tells you to write something down, do it -- 9 out of 10 chance it'll come up on a test. Do not slack on getting the books he assigns, because you'll need them. Despite not being a pushover, he's still funny and caring.
The topic's heavy (the Holocaust), so he tries to break things up with off-topic conversations and jokes during break. Do the readings and participate, and even if he disagrees with your opinions, he'll still look out for you. Not much gets by this guy, so don't try to pull a fast one. The trips to DC and Richmond are cool. Be on time!
I love him as a teacher. He makes it interesting, but his test are hard.
Uses profanity very often. He is not professional. No Power Point or slides other than maps. Speaks quickly and does not give people time to write. Broad, very difficult tests. Grades very hard.
Dr. Coles is a well respected teacher, and for good reason. He cares about his students and would go out of his way to help them. That being said, his class is difficult and his style of lecture makes him hard to follow. His tests are quite hard, and the papers you'll write will be graded like it's an English course.
Can be a lot of reading, but don't try to just skim things, because he does read the answers you post to the forum. He doesn't fall off the radar during summer classes like some professors do. The syllabus is very clear, and the material is put up ahead of time.
One of the best teachers I have ever had, he makes even the most boring parts of history interesting. He has a very dry sense of humor, which makes everyone laugh even early in the morning. He grades fairly, and has lots of extra credit opportunities.
Dr. Coles is one of the best professors here at Longwood. If you try hard, you'll do well. He grades papers like an English professor- don't BS them.
Do. Not. Take him. For online class. It was ridiculously hard, and the tests made NO sense and were on material that I had never even seen (and I did all of the reading). Save yourself the headache and take him in person.
He's the best teacher of my career
Okay, I've taken many Cole classes. From my experience, I've learned a bit: don't BS the essays! He can tell if you've tried or not, and he grades those really hard. GO TO HIS STUDY SESSION! His exams are HARD, but, if you go to his study session you will PASS! Play along with his jokes. Overall, he is a really understanding professor. (: !
Coles is amazing. If you try, and you really put in effort he would truly do anything to help you out. It takes a minute to get used to how he teaches and his assessment, but once you get it you get it. He's been amazing and helpful my whole time here, probably the must useful network I have, he pretty much built for me.
Dr. Coles is easily my favorite professor! He cares for all his students and is available at any time if you need help. He also holds study sessions before tests that are super helpful, be ready to write papers though.
Long boring monotone lectures. He does take 10 minutes in the beginning of class to talk to us about personal stuff or any questions we have. Very easy to talk to and he is very understanding. Makes a lot of jokes. Make sure you go to class or you wont pass. Not hard work at all.
This class was taken online. Maybe 30% of the test information was given on the powerpoint. The rest he expected you to read from the textbook (900 pages for 2 week intersession, mind you). It was an excessive amount of work for a 100-level class. Would highly recommend to take through a community college instead.
Tests are more difficult that they should be for a 100-level class. Class average was usually around 50% on tests. You got lucky if the curve helped you. Would not recommend.
Too much work for an online gen ed class. May be ok in person, but definately not online
He's a great teacher and I like how he lectures the class. He does it in a fun way.
He will call you out if you sleep in class, goof off, etc. He cares, but is tough and focused on doing his job. He is very informed in history, though!
You NEED to take notes and be careful with your reading. The tests are very detail oriented. Very kind and always offers candy in his office. Lots of projects and writing but still a good class. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE.
Good review must be written by females - Dry humor and flirtatious - Lecture heavy (wrote 10 words max on board) - Must also be an english prof, his way or the highway - Exam 1 avg. 66.7 - Essay 1 avg. 70.3 - Essay 2 avg. 61 - Is a tenure teacher and a waste of tax payer money
I took this class online for the summer and he didnt teach a single thing. We had to read so many chapters for one week. His tests were honorlocked and 50 questions for 45 minutes. The test were made so once you answered you cant go back. He did give a heavy curve. The only grades were 3 tests, discussion posts, and an 8 page paper. Sucked
Dr. Coles is excellent and will go above and beyond to help his students. Do your assignments and dedicate yourself to the class, you get out of the course what you put into it. I definitely recommend you take Dr. Coles if you are a history major because you will learn the material. He definitely makes the class interesting as well.
I have heard good things about Dr. Coles in person classes, but as far as teaching an online course it's been nothing but a nightmare. He is harsh on grading and loves to assign long reading and writing activities. I personally love history but after this experience I will think twice about ever taking one of his classes
DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT! take his class. This prof made me cry in front of the entire class. He is way to strict on his paper and class just to be a introductory history class. Mans acts like the class is for a PhD. There are so many other professor options to take for this class and I recommend to do that.
Dr.Coles class is lectured based and no power points, but has taught me how to take good notes. Everything he says if you write it down it will be useful on the test. He holds study sessions which have had me get an A on every test. He always gives extra credit which if you study is sometimes easier than the test. Test is multiple choice/writing.
You can tell he cares a lot, but his grading can be harsh.
Very informative teacher. The best way to describe the class is you get what you put into it. If you show up, interact, and pay attention to the class, you will do well. He can be harsh with grading papers (3 of them), but he does offer many chances to work with him beforehand, as well as offering before-test study sessions that are helpful.
Dr. Coles was awful to me. I would have his repeat things in class because of a mental handicap I have, and he would point it out and pretty much make fun of it. Also he wouldn't help with any technical issues I had regarding submissions. Overall I would never take his class again. I do not reccomend him to anyone.
I absolutely loved this class, and I liked having Dr. Coles as a professor. We were only graded on like seven assignments. Be ready to take a whole bunch of notes as well. Basically everything single thing he says in class will be on the exam. Be extremely detailed on the tests. I would take this class again, but it was hard.
Very lecture heavy and do not expect to get out of class early. Very detailed lectures. Pay attention, take notes and do the readings and you will be successful. Very willing to help outside of class especially when trying to find primary and secondary sources fro the IRP and GIRP.
Never received higher than an 88 no matter how much time I spent on his class. Did not provide a rubric for the assignments and was extremely vague with his commentary. Not much changed after reaching out to him. Not worth the money. Would not recommend
Love Dr. Coles. cares deeply about his students and is passionate about the subject he teaches
Lost half a grade for, missing class. Doesn't respond to emails. Vague commentary with little actual helpful information. The class I missed was an error on my part, but I asked what I could do to make it up and was met with condescending words and then radio silence. Lowered my attendance grade and refused to tell me why. Would not recommend.
