Dave's awesome!! The class is a lot of work, but you'll learn a lot!
Dave is one of the only teachers in the entire business school whou genuinely cares about his students.
Moody
He is a very moody guy. Lectures are pretty boring. Tests are pretty tough, and no extra credit is offered in this course. Therefore, if you do bad on the tests and the paper, you are in trouble.
Great Guy! Fun Lectures!
The material isn't the least bit interesting and I have the class at 8:00 in the morning, but I don't mind going because Dave is always entertaining. In my third year here, he has been my favorite professor
Dave is great! Hilarious too, makes those 8am lectures a lot better. He is also very understanding and cares about students--he was very helpful when I lost my environmental scan paper (my computer ate it) and gave me an extension which I never expected.
Dave wanders around giving sage advice minus the wisdom. He's nice and he cares, but his lectures tend to be more about cuteness than content.
Funny guy, cares about class attendence. Gives extra credit and bonus test questions in class. Lots of fun.
Bad tests.
good guy
the best prof I've had at the U of I
all marketing majors should take this course. he knows what he's talking about. if you put in the effort so does he. if you don't care about class why would he. he's a great teacher and adds has experience in th field. best teacher i've had at the univeristy in four years, by far
Dave repeats his stories over and over again. His class is too easy to be interesting. Although he personally is a good guy, his class gets boring.
Dave is a great teacher, but his tests are very unclear and give several possible correct answers. Fun class, but very hit or miss
Really cares about his students, still remembers me even 5 years later. Tests can be tough though, but if you go and pay attention, and study (includes reading the book) you'll do fine. He's a great guy.
Lectures are absolutlely PAINFUL. This class was at 8am and I mean it is absolutely PAINFUL to try to stay awake. The subject matter is SO BORING. Entire class is nothing but BS. Basically a bunch of common sense over-complicated to make marketing into some Psuedo-science. Dave is ok though.
very engaging professor who truly cares and wants his students to learn something - would recommend him to anyone!
Easy B, and you can get an A if you do well on the tests and one essay assignment. Come to lectures because they are fun, you will learn from them, and because there are 6 pop quizzes throughout the semester. Discussion sections are a joke, you only come for the attendance points.
Great teacher, easy to talk with, learn a lot if you just pay attention.

Fun guy, makes you laugh but his stories do get repetitive. Naperville, Patagonia and Zach Voss the Red Bull man & former student will be drilled into your head. I got a B in the class & never missed a lecture. His tests were worded poorly, but the class is more interesting than most. A for effort.
Dave is a jerk. Flat out. He is not respectful of others views, and his primary ideologies are narrow. Moreover, he imposes those beliefs on everyone in the class and expects them to inherit his narrow-minded quirks and connundrums. His class is helpful, but I can understand why he is no longer working in the real world.
He is funny and keeps the class entertaining, Im part of his fan club. But His tests are too hard, he words things as so to trick you.In lecture you dont realize he's moved on, often you dont know what he is talking about. Don't bother asking him any questions-he wont answer them. The project this semester was time consuming and absolutely dreadful
Very enthusiastic- full of crap sometimes- but interesting stories- you willnot be bored!
I would take his class again

Great teacher, very pasionate. Must come to his lectures, he hates empty auditorium.
read the book, enough said. lectures are a waste of time. all his examples and diagrams come from the book. if you go, don't write anything down. read the book. i repeat, read the book.
If you read the book, you can get an easy B. Dave's stories can be fun, but overall lecture is pointless. The way he plays favorites get old quickly, particularly if you aren't one of them. As long as you march to the beat of his drum, you'll be fine; have your own opinion you're in trouble. He has no appreciation for view other than his own.
Dave is the best professor I have ever had at the University. He made me laugh every class, and even recognized me outside of class, and now he knows my name. He is a great guy!
No attendance policy in lecture, but will give out pop quizzes during the semester w/o telling you about them in the syllabus. GO TO CLASS. This guy is nuts about information you only get in lecture. Nice guy, entertaining, good lectures. Strict grading. Was less than .1% from B- and wouldn't bump it; concurrent with statement in syllabus.
AWFUL!! No lecture notes.. horrible lectures.. didn't really care about students.. has his own agenda.. called economists "glorified astrologers" .. no respect. Take this class SCB or SCA.. avoid at all costs!
Was very funny and interesting teacher. Really cared about student participation. Was a very helpful teacher outside of classroom and outside group projects weren't to time-consuming. Tests were a little tough, but not to bad.
Like a fine wine, Dave keeps getting better. I took his marketing class in 1999. Still one of my favorite profs from undergrad/law school. Be careful, in order to get a letter of reccomendation out of him for law school, he jokes that he requires you to produce the obituaries of 100 dead lawyers! Wicked sense of humor and a great teacher.
Great guy -- and still good friend, even remembers student's names from years' past.
Two midterms, final, several in lecture quizzes, required marketing experiments that take about an hour, 4 group projects. Test are pretty fair and are pretty easy if you go to lecture and read the short chapters in the book.
His class is too boring. He repeats his stories over and over again. He has no idea what the marketing is. He has no points.
Worst "professor" at the University; he lacks a Ph.D. and any knowledge of the subject he teaches. The dumb students appreciate him, and the few intelligent ones will be vexed by his repetitive "jokes". His lectures include mindless business clichés and require rote memorization from the textbook publisher's powerpoint slides.
An OK professor. Concepts were easy to pick-up and tests were pretty easy too. I often felt lectures were a little A.D.D. and random. He covered the material, but often let stories and theatrics take precedent over the material; didn't always have significant relevance to the topics being presented.
Good Guy, Good Class.
He's ok, funny. God forbid anyone have a different opinion than him though.
Thought he was a great teacher, one of the better ones I had at Iowa.
Collins is a very interesting professor. He can be kind of random sometimes, but his examples in class help you clearly understand the points in the textbook.
He is a funny guy. I personally thought his test were very tricky and it would have been worth it for me to take the class with a different instructor. There are other prof. who make marketing much easier test wise. I could be wrong but, I think a Thomas teaches it and overall is much better.
rude, self-conceited, arrogant..anyone whos taken a class with him would most likely say the same.
I agree. He is rude, VERY arrogant, definitely lets his opinions known. If you don't get offended easily, he can be pretty funny.
Going to lecture is crucial- he uses very specific examples in class on tests, also be sure to read the chapters in the book that correspond to what he talks about in lecture. If you go and see him during office hours, he is very helpful and willing to answer questions.
One of the BEST business professors! He is entertaining and funny. There are usually random quizzes in class to take attendance, and the exams require that you go to class as well.
Easy to understand in lecture, but his tests are really hard to understand. He doesn't write his questions well, and then tries to make up for it by giving 'bonus' points for each test. I thought the discussion assignments were completely pointless, and learned nothing from them.
He made lecture very funny and interesting. It is a annoying because reading the book helps, but there is only 1 or 2 questions on each test that is directly from the book, everything else is directly from lecture. But if your not a good notetaker, you will all the lecture stuff, because he has maybe 2 or 3 powerpoint slides per class.
Dave is a great guy. Halarious. I was the guy who never took notes and just payed attention to him. He really appreciated that. He taught his lectures directly to me frequently when not roaming the room and telling stories. Also loves to scare students. Don't show up late!
Must attend lecture. VERY specific examples given during class and are used on the exams. Pay attention in class and you'll do well on the exam. If you can share the book with someone, I would - the readings are important, but lectures are even more for the tests. He does try to intimidate some people just to push their buttons. Scary at first, but
Lectures weren't boring. Material was pretty dry, but he made it fun.
Intro to marketing fall '09. If you wanna do well in this class you've gotta go to class. Nothing pisses Dave off more than people who don't attend. He'll make up terms that aren't in the textbook just to give in lecture for the students who do attend. Make sure to write down everything he says.
Dave is a great professor. He treats most students with respect if and when students do the same. Classes are long and he makes them interesting. Only professor that honestly cares about the success of every student here in the College of Business. Highly recommended and highly likable so long as you don't fall asleep. Be warned!
I learned a lot from Dave, just make sure you pay attention and class, because he tests you on little details.
Best professor I've had thus far at Iowa. Engages students. Took him during the summer, 3 week class, 3.5 hours a day of class and still had everyones attention throughout the class period. Fair tests. Take his class 100%
Great lectures that are kept interesting even through the dull stuff. He is intimidating but his lectures are fun. Easy exams if you attend class (book is there for people who don't). Great teacher.
Great teacher!
As a person, he is extremely arrogant and very intimidating to approach. As a teacher, Dave is knowledgeable and experienced in the marketing industry, which makes the class very engaging. However, the structure of his lectures are very disorganized. His tests are poorly written and very tricky, so make sure you write EVERYTHING he says down.
Dave is an awesome teacher! I just finished up my first marketing class and loved it. Attending class is a must as he will use real life stories in his test or exapmples stated in class. Dave cares for every student individualy, as does his TAs. I'm looking forward to ProPrep Marketing with him next semester, he's a riot!
Entertaining lectures which is important because you will need to attend and take notes to do well because he does not post slides to study off of and uses a lot of "As stated in class" questions on tests. Occasionally will call on students in lecture and take cell phones if he catches you texting. Useless fact: he mentions Patagonia ALL THE TIME
Great professor! He makes class very interesting and easy to sit through! I would recommend going to class because exam questions come from what he talks about in class.
He can teaches based on fear and will often call on you randomly for answers. If you get them wrong he tries to embarrass you as much as possible. As for his knowledge he is extremely knowledable about the subject matter.
Dave is an excellent marketing teacher! Sure he's old and may stutter sometimes in class but he is extremely knowledgeable about the subject he's teaching. The tests are difficult if you do not attend class. He may seem arrogant but he has a kind heart. That being said: Go to class, LISTEN to his examples, and visit him during office hours!
only class at iowa i got a B in...many people love him, but my experience was not the same.
Dave is an awesome teacher who knows how to keep his students entertained. Some people find him arrogant but I was relieved to have a class that kept me awake the entire time. He is tough but you remember everything you learn from him for years to come.
Hilarious to read the reviews below! He is still using the same lame Patagonia example, busting cell phones, embarassing people, "as stated in class" test questions, huge SWOT paper. I took MKT100 in 2004. Suggestion: always go to lecture on time with the slides. This is a weedout class for Tippie, but with some very real application after school.
Unforgettable professor. Really learn a lot of pratical stuff in his class.
Dave Collins is the best teacher I have ever had. You have to attend class although it is not mandatory. He is very entertaining and genuinely cares about his students. Best professor at the University.
Dave is a really interesting teacher...I can tell he loves what he does. Very opinionated, so if you get offended easily...take w/ different professor. Gives every day examples that help you relate the material to real life scenarios. Attendance isn't mandatory, but gives pop-quizzes (often when he sees that not a lot of people showed up).
Dave is a fantastic professor. This class is clearly his favorite topic and he shows favor to any students who take it. The class is discussion based so you can't be thin-skinned but it has been my favorite class to date.
Dave is by far the most inspiring teacher I have ever had. His classes aren't always the easiest but I've learned more in 1 class with him than all other classes combined. He engages students to think for themselves, not simply take on his point of view.
Dave is the man! I absolutely love this guy! I took his pro prep course and enjoyed listening to most of their stories. Seriously Dave comes off as a hard person but he us seriously the most genuine and caring professor in the TCOB. If you have a chance, then please take one of his courses. You will not regret it!
The only reason I got a C in this class is because I am stupid and my group project team was pretty bad. Dave is awesome though and his lectures are very entertaining. Go to lecture because he gives out answers to tests during them. Also, he loves the environment and is a hippie which is ok. Even though I'm conservative, I agreed with him a lot.
Dave is absolutely the best professor I've ever had in college. He's so knowledgable and talkative. be prepared for every class, so that you can interact with him more during class and learn more stuff. He's so helpful and willing to help his students out and provide great ideas and guidance for their career goals or concerns!
Dave's lectures were very interesting. He is one of those teachers that loves to keep kids on their toes, but you will learn a lot from him if you take the time to listen. I am a person that would always has a laptop for notes in class and just to do any other thing. Dave's class was the first one that I willingly closed it to listen to a professor
Awful teacher and very rude to several women students and even made one cry. He is stuck up and makes up terms that are in the course or textbook. Stay away if possible despite his decent reviews
Dave is my favorite teacher at the University. He doesn't care to be politically correct; he cares to honest, open, and straightforward with every person he deals with. It's too bad this is his last full semester.
He was a great role model and helped with real world experiences too.
Boring class all we did was watch youtube videos and watch him play video games. Didn't learn much from this class.
