i took him for exper design and quantative methods... the class is pretty hard, and the TA's kinda sucked,if you wanted to understand the labs you had to go to them for extra help..also the book sucks so you have to go to class. coreys nice though.
I had this professor for experimental design and quantitative methods. His lectures are sometimes hard to follow but he is very willing to meet with students and provide extra help. Also, the TA was excellent. I learned alot in Dr. Corey's classes.
Corey obviously knows what he's talking about, but doesn't really know how to portray it to those of us who haven't been doing it for years. Too bad you've gotta take it to be a Psyc major. TAs are mediocre, good luck.
I found Corey's lectures to be boring, but not very hard to follow. His tests come mostly from lectures & if there are questions that are going to come from the book he tells you exactly where to look. He has 4 tests & drops the lowest & the curve is huge! you can go from a C to an A. EC available
Too caught up in numbers.
It's been said above, but bears repeating. Hard class. Should be called "Applied Statistics for Psychology". Lectures really aren't that clear. TAs suck, as mentioned. Tests are rediculous, requiring huge curves. Text is near-usesless. Few tools for study outside notes and some small supplementals.
Have to go to class for the tests, the took is almost useless
I thought Dr. Corey was great. He really knows his stuff, but you HAVE to come to class and not zone out for a second or you'll miss vital information. He's really nice and doesn't mind repeating or explaining ideas until you understand. DON'T BUY THE BOOK!! Find someone who has it and copy all the tables from the Appendix. Good luck!!
I found the class to be really hard. Never miss even a single class for any reason whatsoever, or you won't have any idea what's going on. The curve was not that high for my class, so unreliable to pull up the test grade. Do good on labs, because tests are extremely tricky, picky, and difficult. Text never even reffered to-waste of money.
Corey was extremely unwilling to help and his tests were ridiculous. There was no reason for him to make a 200 level class that dfficult. If you get behind at all GOOD LUCK, because you are screwed. For a required course for the major it was way too difficult. Attend every class, DO WELL ON LABS. Pray to your deity for this one!
My guess is the people giving bad ratings are 1 of 3 things 1) people who never go to class (you'll be screwed if you don't) 2) not auditory learners (all the course material comes from his lectures) and 3) not math people. Go to class, don't buy the book, right down everything he says/ writes on the board. Honestly, I didn't think it was hard.
He is very intelligent and a good instructor, but in order to do well, you must go to class and take good notes. If you do this, and go to his office hours when you don't understand something, it will be very easy to do well in his class.
This class is NOT as bad as people make it out to be and Corey is actually a great professor. If you study hard, attend all the lectures and take good notes, then you should have no problem. Also, he lets you keep the exams after the test.. so it is helpful if you can get a hold of someone's old exams to help you prep for the tests.
This class is difficult, but you don't have a choice. Dr. Corey is extremely helpful and willing to answer all questions. Write down every word he says! Tests have words and you have to write out the definition word-for-word.
Don't bother buying the text, you won't open it once. You HAVE to go to class, because tests are totally based on lecture. It's easy material, he just isn't always clear about what you have to know. Make friends in class and form study groups. His exams are all open ended questions but the final was multiple choice. Requires a lot of memorizing.
Dr. corey teaches his class straight from his head and you dont need the book if you go to class. During lecture, he does a lot of reexplaining things and examples, but if you understand statistics, then this class should be no problem and, since attendance isnt required, a no show for you
HORRIBLE professor. sweet guy. steer clear. if you do take, hire a tutor and dont buy the book.
Terrible Class, doubt anyone would take it if it wasn't required. No textbook needed. Lectures are very boring, hard to follow. Lab was rushed, also unhelpful. Tests OUTRAGEOUSLY hard, curve is huge. Class average very low. Mixed with Grad-students. No fun. I'm sure the guys a genious, but hard to follow as a professor.
If you have a hard time with math do not take his class. Grades based on 3 tests, lab, & final. Tests are very hard. Lab work is long, but labs help tremendously.
Textbook is completely useless, except for tables in the back, which you do need for lab. Labs are the only thing that make sense in this class and are EXTREMELY useful if you have a good TA. Corey seems like a cool dude, but he is totally unorganized/scatterbrained. He will answer questions in class and re-explain things, but he's hard to follow.
I think Corey is actually a really good professor. You really have to go to class and actually pay attention because he doesn't follow the book sequentially and says everything you need to know. The book can be helpful when you study for test, though. His tests are hard, but they're based on a curve, so it's not difficult to do well.
The teacher is definitely disorganized when it comes to teaching. But he does repeat himself a lot. The class is hard at first, but gets much easier as it goes on, because it's basically the same stuff just with a few things added. Labs are really helpful, so pay attention and study labs for exams.
Definitely sit in the front row, take copious notes, and don't be afraid to ask questions. This class is difficult if you don't apply yourself. Take the time to pay attention and do well in lab because that goes a long way, and the TAs are very helpful.
He's a great teacher, he just has a boring class. But, he makes it seem like he actually wants to teach, a big difference from most of the other required class teachers. I really liked him. You just have to pay attention in class and take notes and you'll do fine
He is a really great teacher. He repeats himself a lot so if you didn't understand the first time, you will the second time. The subject isn't that interesting, but he makes it as interesting as possible with real life examples. Using the book is optional because you are tested on what he says in class so take good notes.
He's a nice guy and all, but the class is dreadfully boring. For an 8:00, it was not fun waking up to go to it. And you need to, since he only does hand written notes and his handwriting isn't that great. If you are a Psych major, then do know that you are getting more work than you'd expect. The TAs are nice, though, and the labs are easy.
Corey is so unprepared. He doesn't really go over the general topic and dives right into examples or details so it's really easy to get lost. His tests are over broad concepts which are not so easy to figure out based on his notes. He doesn't seem to realize he is very confusing to follow. TAs are going to be the best source of help and information
This class frustrates me so much. Corey is so disorganized and kind of just blabs on in lecture. Too bad this class is required for psyc majors and minors
Dr Corey manages to make an easy course extremely difficult. Very disorganized and forces us to watch his lab videos where he blabs on and on, just like in his dreadful 8am lectures. Tests are extremely difficult because they cover such broad concepts and he asks for specific info. Very scattershot. I got an A in B-stats but struggle in his course.
unorganized and unprofessional. tests are about memorization of abstract formulas and definitions, not actual learning. having to watch his lab videos were tedious and time consuming.
confusing teacher. not clear. rough way to start my mornings. TAs are much more helpful, ask them during lab for help, they are typically better at explaining things than Corey is.
Tests are very hard even though he does give a curve. Lab assignments are time consuming when all you do is watch a video him doing the lab while you plug in your own data set. This class could be so much better but Corey makes it too difficult.
Sooo boring and not very clear. Unfortunately, this class is required for psych majors and minors, and he's the only professor who teaches it (and it's almost always gonna be at 8am). Labs are long and annoying but do well on them because they'll save your grade. Tests aren't horrible and he puts old tests on blackboard which helps a lot.
Professor Corey rambles throughout his lectures, which are hardly worth going to. The material is pretty boring and he makes it even more boring. The labs take HOURS to do, so seriously start them a week ahead. A lot of his exams are similar to previous ones but he always throws in curve balls to mess you up. Not a fan, but only open to 3090.
I don't get why everyone is so afraid of this class or why anyone would have so many negative things to say about Dr. Corey. Sure, the material is super boring, but he does his best. Dr. Corey is an extremely fair professor and gives extra credit. Come to class (which I guess is terrible at 8 AM) and study your notes, you will get an A or B.
I have consistently gotten perfect lab scores yet struggle to do well on tests. His tests are weighted much more heavily than labs even though labs teach us practical skills and should be the focus of the course. Exams focus on abstract concepts that in no way test one's proficiency in computing statistics. This course is rote memorization.
Professor Corey isn't as bad as everyone says he is. He stresses the importance of learning the concepts, which does require memorization. If you go to class and take notes on everything he says, it is likely that you'll get an A. Also, make sure to ask questions as he does not make everything clear-cut. Practice tests do reflect the actual tests.
This class is absolutely atrocious. Always @ 8AM and while you don't HAVE to go, you will do much better if you do. Corey is boring, monotone, and is very specific with his definitions so that if you don't answer the test questions with his wording, you lose points. He can be helpful at office hours. 2 exams, one massive final, horrible experience.
Dave is a great guy and tries his best, but univariate is naturally a boring subject and can be really tough if you're not a math person.
I've heard this class would be difficult so I put a lot of effort in. Overall I can't complain - he is pretty straight forward and TAs are very helpful. Don't buy the textbook, you won't need it.
The worst thing about this class is that it's at 8 am, but that's it. You don't need to be a math person to do well (I'm not!)... it's incredibly manageable. Dr. Corey is just a plain guy but is incredibly straightforward in his material. Teaching yourself the concepts is annoying, but will guarantee yourself an A if you just try!
Corey is a nice enough guy and the univariate lectures aren't terrible (ALWAYS at 8am tho), but the part of this class that gets you are the labs. They're just brutal 1 or 2 hour long videos of Corey talking and doing calculations in spreadsheets, and you just watch and copy. It's a challenging way to learn, I always found myself dreading them.
He's your only choice, but he's not a bad one. Boring, redundant, but if you study and attend the awful 8am lecture, you'll do fine. Labs are repetitive but easy
It is not Professor Corey's fault that this class is crazy dull and boring and pretty much only at 8 am so you're sleepy, but all those things are true. He can be really funny but the material is dull. Sadly, if you're taking this class it's probably mandatory for you, so you don't have much of a choice.
Corey is a solid option for Univariate I, as he is the only option (usually). The only killer about this class is that it is ALWAYS at 8 am. However, Corey is pretty clear throughout lecture, and labs can be done in advance to avoid having to sit in a computer lab for two hours. Two tests and a final, all were pretty grueling so, study hard!
The fact that it's always at 8am seriously sucks but it's doable. David Corey is actually a really nice guy, it's just that the subject matter is a little dry. Attendance isn't mandatory but you'll do much better if you go. You can get a few extra credit points by doing grad student psych studies too. All in all not a nightmare.
Overall this was the best math class I took so far at Tulane. He cares about his students and actually tries during the lectures to make sure the students are understanding. He even makes these labs for you to watch when doing your homework. Would I take this class again? No. But he definitely made it better than it could've been.
Hes a nice guy and definitely made the class easier than it could have been by making guided labs. unfortunately, the labs dont count for much and theres no hw or participation grade, so you have to do well on EVERY exam (I did badly on the first, better on the second. my grade still went down. no reward for improvement). memorization heavy
His voice is so soothing, and at 8am, that's a problem. He is pretty clear about what he teaches, so it's not his fault the content is boring. He can definitely make it more interesting. Do your labs and redo them for full credit. You can do the labs outside of class, which is great.
I don't understand why the reviews on here aren't worse. This is the hardest class I've taken at Tulane so far. If you have the option to take it somewhere else do that. The labs take awhile but aren't difficult- don't count for much. Going to class all semester didn't really help me and the notes are online. Impossible tests.
This is the worst class I have ever taken in my entire life, I honestly would have switched my major if I knew how bad it is. Class is pointless and less than 15 people go. The labs are grueling and take hours, however it is easy to get 100 on them. They do not count for enough of the grade. If you bomb any of the tests you are screwed.
The class is sooo boring and the tests are super hard and make up a huge portion of your final grade. Definitely attend class because it's hard to learn on your own.
Professor Corey is very articulate & makes the concepts understandable if you go to class & pay attention. All the notes are uploaded & labs reinforce what you learn in lecture. This class is not hard & he is fair (curves), but you have to get up for the 8 AM & memorize what he tells you to memorize to do well. These other reviews are dramatic.
Professor Corey gets a bad rep, but I think that has to do more with the fact that this class is an 8AM rather than his teaching style. He is very clear and good at explaining concepts, and each class he reviews previous material before moving on. Takes plenty of time to answer all questions. Tests are hard but given a big curve. I liked him a lot!
Really surprised by all the negative feedback here, Dr. Corey is fantastic. Univariate, while dull, was an easy enough class as long as you attended and paid attention in class. Tests are VERY similar to the practice tests. Labs are long, but if you do well on them they will boost your grade.
hes nice and helpful in office hours but he writes as he lectures and moves stuff around on his iPad program which can be really frustrating for paper/pencil note taking. all his test questions are relatively straightforward though and the labs, though long and sometimes tedious, are super helpful
Different kind of stats. Be prepared to memorize definitions, conclusions etc. Posts all his notes, a semester long study guide, and a video walkthrough to follow for labs. Ask a friend for old tests. Final is almost all MC (easier or harder depending on person; i did not do well).
The class is only offered at 8 am which does not help. But his lectures are drier than sand. The information is very boring and he doesn't do anything to make it more engaging.
Take both Univariate I and II with Professor Corey. One of the best professors in Tulane. He is very knowledgable in statistics. And his lectures are very clear and organized. Also, he is very helpful and accessible outside class. Univariate II can let you know how to practically use statistical concepts.
Univariate is a hard class in general so no matter what professor you have you will have to work for it. However, Professor Corey makes the class easier. For the labs, he records videos explaining how to do each question, if you follow the instructions you will at least get a 90 on the labs. The quizzes and exams are hard, so study for that!
You are graded by Labs, Module quizzes, and discussion (1 per module). You have to watch the module before class to answer the discussion but then Dr. C goes over the exact same stuff during class. It's a fine class
The fact that Univariate is only offered at 8am is terrible. The class itself is hard and involves a lot of work, but it's not Dr. Corey's fault. He's a fantastic teacher and also a really cool guy in general. I think most people on here are rating the class and not the person.
Good professor and has the class set up really well. If you take good notes on the videos you will be fine since all quizzes are open-note. Labs are a pain but super easy if you just follow the videos. Do the SONA extra credit
Quite literally the most ridiculous class at Tulane. In case yall didn't know, it fully IS his fault for it being at 8am and online only. He has pre recorded videos you have to watch; he doesn't actually teach. The TAs do all the grading. Quizzes don't reflect the course material. But, he's the only option so this rating is a bit useless.
Tough grader with difficult, confusing quizzes and exams. He would not respond to my emails when asking questions or attempting to set up meetings. You are not able to see what you got wrong on quizzes and exams without going to office hours every single week.
the least organized and helpful class I have ever been in. It's a flipped classroom so we have to do all the work outside of class and his in-class answers to questions are literally so unhelpful and unnecessarily wordy. The quiz questions are weirdly confusing and you don't know what you missed.
This class is terrible! First of all, although there is no roll call in this course, there are quizzes in almost every class. If you don't go to his class, it means that you can't complete the quizzes. The quizzes account for a lot of scores, and the quizzes are very difficult.
David Corey is a good professor but the weekly quizzes are too inconsistent in difficulty. The weekly videos help but I was never confident taking the quizzes after taking notes. Having this class at 8 am is rough. Most people only went to class for the quizzes. He makes your grade unavailable on Canvas so have fun with that. Labs take a long time
I took Professor Corey's online Univariate Statistics I course this summer. He was organized and was willing to help us with any questions we had. He allowed for one on one time and always helped us with labs. Watch his videos and listen in lectures, and it will be fine. The class itself is a little harder, but he really helps. He is kind & funny.
Univariate sucks but Dr Corey really isn't that bad. I feel like those who say its hard just don't watch the lecture videos before class, which is something he literally emphasizes in the syllabus. Labs are long and annoying, but easy if you can stay focused. Quizzes are hard sometimes, but the labs make up for them and bring up your grade.
Prof. Corey uses a flipped classroom, which is time consuming, but if you are willing to put the work in, you can get a good grade in the class. A lot of the stuff is just participation or easy to get full credit on, but there are weekly in-class quizzes which sucks because it's an 8AM. Psych majors have to take this with him, but he's pretty nice
Worst class I've ever taken. 8AM mandatory quiz every week (that had nothing to do with the labs), discussion posts that are just busy work (but make no sense) and labs that take 4+ hours. The class is a major requirement but take it when you can make it your priority because it's truly awful. My lab TA was great and thats the only positive I had
There are no 2 ways about it--this is a frickin hard class. Many hours of work, many tears, many moments of doubt. Dedicated 5+ daily watching vids, taking notes+doing labs. V difficult 10 min quizzes almost daily. Long but easy labs. Ended w/ 93. -take in summer -take LOTS of notesonvids -go over quiz questions -DONOT get behind -Work hard on lab
TAKE THIS CLASS OVER THE SUMMER!! It goes at a quicker pace but it is so much easier to get all the work done now when you don't have other classes and obligations. Each of the 13 modules has a hard quiz and a discussion post that he grades harshly. Labs are time consuming but if you do them well they will help your grade.
im a double major in neuroscience and psychology and i mean this wholeheartedly when i say i would rather redo my entire neuroscience degree from scratch than sit and do one (1) more univariate statistics lab. not his fault but jesus christ
Dr. Corey is very funny and lectures well for what can be a dull subject. I will say I'm not the biggest fan of the flipped model. You are supposed to watch prerecorded videos and take notes before attending the Zoom meetings. The labs are TEDIOUS, make sure you know some excel shortcuts and get a mouse for your laptop to make navigation quicker.
Having skills in excel will make this much easier. Labs are taught through video instruction. Timed quizzes every class at 9 am must be on zoom with camera on and he gives you a password. Inconsistently difficult quizzes and labs. Less work at the end of the sem. TA can make or break. Did not learn anything about statistics, just how to use excel.
Univariate is really difficult class, but it's absolutely doable if you put it the effort. You can get a 100% on every lab bc he gives the answers even though they are a gigantic pain but DEF worth it for grade. Quizzes are hard, prepare well and take detailed notes. DO NOT GET BEHIND on videos it will be hell. Quiz questions will reappear
It is in person now, and not online, so buckle in! This is genuinely a terrible class. I would rather redo my entire degree than take this class again. In all honesty, I would switch majors. The good news is that the labs are long but not too hard. Bad news is that I would pray before each exam, and even if you do, I can't promise it will help.
Lectures are very boring and the posted videos are far more helpful for understanding the material. Quizzes are very hard, but the labs save you. The labs take like 3 hours a week, and they can be very frustrating, but it's easy to get an A on them. He gives a very generous curve and extra credit. He is very kind and accommodating as well.
Fall 2025 was the first time this course was in person. Dr. Corey is funny and cares about his students. If you watch the module videos, you do not really need to go to class, but it definitely helps the material make more sense. He is available for office hours. Tests are not bad if you go to class and study. Keep up with the module videos.
We had 3 midterms + final. Everyone who is getting bad grades never studies or goes to office hours. He's super nice and will tell you exactly what to study for so don't be scared to ask him questions! Also I haven't been to class in months but it doesn't matter because everything you need to know is in the videos. Take time to do the labs well
This class is more vocab than math, he posts all the lectures online in short videos, so just watch them before the test and you will do amazing. He also has an amazing curve and offers extra credit. He posts step-by-step tutorials for the labs, and as long as you submit before your lab time starts, you don't have to show up.
David Corey is an amazing professor - he is so kind and genuinely wants his students to do well. Univariate is an insanely hard class but if you put in significant effort you can do well. Make sure you watch all of his videos for the modules because that helped me more than the in class lectures.
As someone who was very nervous about this class, it really wasn't that bad. Professor Corey is a great person who is very accessible and helpful ESPECIALLY if you go to in person class. He is awesome at answering questions and clarifying. Lectures were helpful. Very test heavy. He provides study guides that are very helpful.
This class requires at least an hour or two of studying everyday. He posts video lectures of the content which are better than the in class lectures but overall the content is still pretty difficult. Takes forever to respond to emails. Exams consist of all open ended questions. Hardest class I've taken so far
David is sweet proffesor but omg, this class is HARD. The material is all memorization and exams consit of open-ended questions. Make sure you stay on top of the material and GO TO CLASS!!!!!
Second half of labs way easier than first half. Quizzes 2/3 just like the sample questions, Quiz 1 was NOT. Final was 120 questions (+ more Qs you needed to figure out to leave blank) took everyone 2-3 hours. Final was stupid brutal and he gave no guide. Plenty nice guy. Lectures posted online, get your beauty sleep and don't wake up at 8am 4 class
Prof Corey is a very nice guy- but this class is HARD!!! Quizzes are all open ended questions, and the final (13 PAGES WORTH OF QUESTIONS- NO STUDY GUIDE GIVEN). Please make this class a priority if you are taking it- and stay on top of the work!
