Excellent but little cocky.
awsome but cocky
excellent professor, very approchable
Made the material very easy to understand
turns classroom into a political statement promoting liberal economy theory
assignments and textbook are completely unrelated to exams
Good teaching, but hard exam
very clear teacher, but exams are brain ticking
Good prof., made concepts understandable. Fair exams.

Great lectures. I didn't skip a single one! Exams were underestimated.
midterm was really easy...final was mission impossible...
Very easy! Fee like going back to high school! Easy as Hell!!!
I never went to class so I got a C-.
Clear Notes!! don't skip!!
Super hard course
Not too bad, good lectures and notes
Great prof, econ103 is much easier than 105
sometimes unclear, impossible final -- avg 35/100 you do the math!
lectures straight out of the book. exams are tricky, pay attention to detail.
He always looks so incredibly choked when I see him around campus
unclear teaching and hard exam!!!

boring and geeky hard class
Great lecturer. Don't skip his classes!
study his notes hard and u'll be on u'r way for at least a B
Boring lectures, and hard exams
Again, study his notes and examples lots, read the text and you'll do fine
Study hard his lecture notes. Tricky exams so read the questions properly
not the sharpest knife in the drawer

not quite difficult exams,clear notes.
really good.. clear, consise... moderate exams
One of the better prof i have at SFU
No Comments
Best in SFU, moderate, and consistant prof. If you study, we should at least got a B+
One of the worst experiences at SFU was taking a class with David Cox. His lectures are dry and uninformative and his exams are far too difficult.
People shouldn't critize him.. Wait until you encounter Kennedy

always well-prepared, very useful notes!

Very good professor! Very easy if you study his notes. Recommend taking ANY class with him!

it's a hard course but he is a great prof ^^
A GPA booster if you're an athlete. If you're not, don't take it because it will hurt your GPA. Surprisingly unfriendly, not helpful, and unapproachable.

EASY!?!?! ARE YOU CRAZY!?!?! This course is fairly hard. Lots of memorizing concepts and asociations between 50+ variables and graphs.
Really difficult, he does a horrific job lecturing and the course difficulty does not help either.
Cox is okay~ Only read notes for the midterm and final is enough...
Doesn't get more cut and dry than this guy. If you want to get a laugh or two in your class, this is the wrong class. If you want to learn economics, you take this class.
Great lecturer but very unfriendly person. He actually looks scary upfront. But I must admit he's good at teaching.
This Cost and Benefits class was very very boring. Cox is a horrible lecturer. His quizes are hard, but his tests are soo predictable.
His note is clear, but too brief...so you should read the textbook...his exam and test are easy
very straight forward class. you have to study to get a good mark. the class can get boring at times and if you fall asleep it's ok because most of the material covered in lecture is in the textbook.
Extremely unhelpful during office hours. Better ask him in class.
I took his 105, 342, 245, 382, and 301. Overall, i think he is an excellent prof, his exam are quite easy, as long as u study his notes, don't really need to read the textbook.
Although he is a nice enough guy personally, he is a catastrophy as a teacher. He tries hard but isn't funny and he can't really make the course interesting.
This Cost Benefit Analysis course was a lot of fun. His lecture notes are brief and concise. His quizes make you think but are not impossible to do. His tests are very predictable and easy if you study the lecture notes. Great Prof.
a Very nice professor, he always gives his best try. I will alwaysfollow this professor during my academic-life.
good!
Easy Course, but you got to go to lecture and work at understanding, don't need to memorize if you understand the stuff. Use your brain cells.
I've never had another prof go into the depth he does, while still making it so easy to understand. He is an amazing prof.
not much math stuff involved so this makes 301 a really easy course!! also ...no need to read the text for exams...n the exams were not that hard!
I can't really comment on his helpfulness or clarity, because I haven't gone to lecture since week 1. Why? Because he lectures straight out of the texbook, which is surprisingly well-written.
The overall experience was fairly not too bad. The test was not as hard as I thought, and his lessons were pretty clear and easy to understand. Needs to get some personality, however, as there is no distinctive characteristic about this man.
His Final was Killer. I had him for two courses, every single time got murdered on the final.
Made the class somewhat interesting consdiering what he had to work with. Preseneted the ideas from the textbook in a very clear manner. Tests were difficult yet fair. One of the best profs I've had!
One of the better guys to take econ courses with. He lectures from the textbook and his midterm and final were both based on the text. No tricks and a good course to take with this guy ONLY.
not hard course. he is clear and helpful
Good Prof. informative note
prof cox is one of the best prof i've had.. his teaching is very clear and his assignments are helpful.. just study his notes and you can get a good mark
This guy is a legend! Unbelievable teaching skill! His notes are so clear. Just read them, U will get at least a B. I would definitely love to take classes under him again.
He is on e of the best prof.
He is an ok proffesor, he explains kind of clearly, He is organized, clear notes. Not very helpful. Not really easy. The Book he chose during our semester was really good though!
Who is David Cox? He is the best professor in the dept. of economics. But he never smiles after the lecture.
Senior lecturer in the Econ dept? He is the worst lecturer ever. Perhaps time to retire?
good professor i ve ever seen

Good prof. His lectures are clear and he explains things rather well.
The guy knows what is he doing and what we need from his courses. His lectures are clear and easy to understand.
he's an old man who is short on temper. However, his notes are helpful and clear.
BEST Econ prof. Best part is that his exams are never hard. Exam questions are basically the same as what he taught in lectures, unlike other econ profs like PK, Suki, Easton, Friesen, who tries to show off their knowledge by making exams hard. I'm average student and still got A+ in all his classes
Clear notes and explanations with fair tests.
He's a fair professor. The course itself is not that hard... or maybe if you know what you do in real life, it should be simply logic.
make sure his notes make sense, he makes mistakes on the lecture notes couple times a week.....and tricky exams!
Great prof, teaches straight from the textbook pretty much,I never went to many classes until the end of the semester..the textbook he uses is really easy to understand. His midterm is really easy if you study and his final is designed similarly, don't know how hard it will be as I have yet to write
Really good at explaining everything. Need to actually understand the course material to do well. This is probably the best prof who can teach you this course. Midterm and Final are okay as long as you've done the readings. They allow you to understand everything better.
Really clear prof who explains everything well. Midterm and final were straight forward, nothing weird. Definitely take the course with him, much better than anyone else in the Econ dept, which has pretty BADH profs.
An interesting class.
I like his teaching style...we need more prof like him, very straight forward and no tricky qs on exams. Dunno what happened on the final but it sure was harder than midterm...
very good prof
The course is not as easy as others said. Some time it is rather pointless to attend his lecture if everything he says matches the text 100%.
He is relatively easy on 342.
skipped so many classes, but still end up w/ a good grade ^^ (but remember to get all the lecture notes from your classmates)
his exams are tricky.. and he is quite lazy..
Extremely clear notes, so, attend the lectures. Understand the notes and you'll do well. Best Econ prof there is. Exams are ok.
His notes are handwritten so at least it will keep you awake in class. Notes are pretty clear; well summarize the chapter for you. But his midterm is hard!! He likes to base a big proportion of marks on the short answer question. The mark you get is what you get. He doesnt curve. Not as good as I thought tho.
Mr Cox is a white haired man that writes notes on the board for us to copy. His midterm was not easy...NOT EASY...well for me that is, since some others got impressive marks. I thought his midterm was too tricky since the MT 95% of short answers offer a yes or no format. If you get the first part wrong, say good bye to those marks...
i read over the comments about cox here before i enroll this course, everyone said his exam is very straight-forward.....but after taking his midterm....i realize those comments just bs....his exam is kind of tricky...not that straight forward at all
Boring class, avoid it at all cost. It's not hist fault tho, this content makes you want to sleep....well, for me at least. He always seems to be drinking some sort of carbonated beverage. He always seems to skip towards the projector right before he begins to write something. He is a nice person, but extremely boring. Mid term is very hard.
His class is interesting most of the time. I did not do to well on the mid term but it was marked fairly.
hard...!
His lectures are good and he has adequate notes, but boring at times due to the nature of the course. Exams are hard and can be very tricky. Homework assignments are okay and doable, just make sure you pay attention and take notes throughout the course.
Took 105, 301 & 342 with him simply because he is the BEST Econ prof. Take notes, there's a reason why he writes them! Extremely clear on everything. Exams are quite straight forward; if you have studied the notes and made an effort to understand them, you should have NO problem getting a good mark.
Fantastic prof. He explains the material so well during lecture that you will actually learn, understand AND retain it. Can't ask for more from any lecturer!
Best first year Econ prof ever. His exams are tricky, but what exams aren't? Compared to other Econ profs I've had, he's one of the clearest, and easiest to understand. It's nice to have the important points outlined out for you in his notes, when you review with the textbook. Also very helpful during his office hours! Helped me pass the course!
hmm...mr cox is kinda tough in terms of the midterm and final difficulty, but dunt be tooo worried about your marks until the end, because he was i believe nice enough to curve to let most ppl get away with passing. so if passing is all you need, dunt wrry and enjoy the class but if ur an ambious man wanting to get A+'s, ull hav to be pretty smart
Cox is one the best prof I've had. I find the midterm and exam were not hard; it's do-able if you actually UNDERSTAND the material and not memorize it. Don't expect him to spoon feed you in the course as we are in university now.
good prof. lecture goes by really fast because you do a lot of note taking but his notes are very clear and very neat. exams can be quite hard average is about 65% for midterm. hard to do good but not hard to do decent
Cox should be the standard of all Econ prof. Good, experienced prof. Very clear on notes, concepts, what will be on MTs. Fair MT. Helpful assignments, organized lectures, well-prepared EVERYTIME. Well manage of time, even knows students writing speed: he slows down to let students 'finish writing' the notes. Crazy excellent & EXPERIENCED prof! A+A+
Super super tough exam and midterm. (Smart ppl will think he is super easy.) He is pretty nice. But, I don't really enjoy his lecture. I don't know why there are lots of ppl like him. Assignments are doable. Take 105 with someone else if you are not a super smart student.
Final was very fair, like his assignments but of course quite a bit harder/longer. All concepts in the questions were covered in his lecture, nothing was a surprise. Final is cumulative, 8 short answer questions. Again overall very fair final. EXCELLENT PROF.
Great notes that summarize the material in a very concise manner. Gives practice midterms and finals. Concepts are tested broadly. Assignments are much more numerical than exam questions, so they aren't too useful. Focus on the main concepts and not so much the little details when studying. Overall, a great prof with some funny mannerisms.
Sucked, way too hard to understand, there was way too many graphs to memorize. he's a very bouncy man...
HARD !!!!!!!!! His midterms and finals are super hard. His notes are boring. Assignments are okie and doable. Try to take with another prof if u wanna get a good mark
Good prof for econ 105. Just pay attention and follow his notes. I never once read the book and still pulled an A by just reading the notes. He does bounce a lot and run around his overhead before writing things down... which is pretty wicked awesome.
An easy class.
if you think Cox is hard for Econ 105, then you will for sure FAIL taking 105 with Peter Kennedy.
He is one of the better professors in this school. The exams are straightforward and fair. It's a generally easy course if you actually put some effort into it.
good prof! understood the points. make sure you go to all the lectures and take notes. go to the tutorials, do the homework, they help you on the final and midterms. Midterm and final is straight forward from the lecture notes and the homework from tutorials. Recommend him for the econ classes
I do not think midterm & final are straight forward from the notes. Even he himself admitted that some questions were tricky. However, I am very impressed by his well-preparation before every class. He is one of the good profs. I gave him an A on his evaluation.
Fantastic prof. notes are clear.
easy class just study his notes and past exams; he seem well prepared but when i go to his officehour he doesnt answer any of my question(he say it wouldnt be fair to other students..) he doesnt even giv me more practice questions! and my TA suked too no one understood her in tutorial..
... I guess teaching is not that easy. his class made me so sleepy all the time..exam is not that fair either..take him at your own risk.
good side: he has very clear and organized notes, highlights all the major points from the text for you. bad side: boring, especially the 2 hr lectures....but overall, a very good prof
He is very organized, clear and easy to understand, but due to the course material, lectures can get quite dry and boring. His midterm/final were a little on the difficult side, but still quite fair if you put the effort into that course.
His lectures are amazing. very clear and concise. same goes for his notes. yelled at the class a few times during the semester. exams are very tricky. The final exam was out of 90 marks so be careful. doesn't like to help you any more than what he says in class. He will emphasize when asked questions, that he already mentioned it in class."
his notes are good, great examples. lectures are boring. he is a nice guy. class average is not that bad, 65% on the midterm. questions are somewhat tricky. Half MC, half written.
His notes are very clear; they made the textbook almost unnecessary (it's being changed next term though). Being on Monday in the fall term, the course had a lot of content left out and too little work to do. I probably would have gotten a better mark with a more regular workload. He didn't offer a practice final exam, so you're on your own there.
One of the best econ profs at SFU. He explains the material in simple terms and makes it easy to understand. He is very clear. Would highly recommend taking his class over Kennedy for sure!
he bunny jumps back and forth, and he is quite nice
he is clear and his overhead notes are well written. practice exams prepare you well for the actual exams. Assignments every week and half of them are group assignments. exams are fair and he does not bell curve the class.
He is super nice, his notes are sooo helpful and he is the best econ professor you can get at SFU! If you study and go to lectures than it is easy to get a good mark.
Super jumpy guy. Seems like he's high on caffeine a lot of the time. Assignment type questions usually end up on the MT and Final. Both the MT and Final are hard. Notes were decent but ended up reading the text most of the time.
This guy is terrible in teaching! midterm and final exams are hard and he is really mean when you ask him questions during his office hour! Avoid this guy!
midterm and final are pretty tough!(also with many quetions) He don't like people to challenge him.
This prof. is incapable of teaching! Tough tests and final.
This prof. is incapable of teaching. Tough midterms and final.
His midterm and final are tough!
Pretty nice prof. but tricky exams. Won't help alot when you ask for clarification.
BAD PROF. not recomment!
He is such a good professor! He makes this course almost simple and interesting. He will not answer questions about tests and assignments in his office hours to make it fair to all students. He is the best teacher for econ 105 and probably the best in the whole department!
everyone who thinks he can't teach needs to experience a prof with an accent, with no teaching experience. u guys are nuts. he is super nice and jumpy, draws PERFECT graphs, and makes things simple to understand.
good notes (straight from text), explains concepts very well and is SO helpful during office hours! really knows his stuff and writes clear and concise midterms/finals. recommended!!
Awesome and bouncy prof. Just be sure you pay attention in lecture.
his notes are very clear ..you don't even need to read the textbook, or you can choose to just read the textbook and not go to class kuz he just takes the notes right out of the textbook. He's very clear during lectures. Tests are straightforward. As long as you know the material, you'll do good. My TA is kate, she's VERY HELPTFUL & nice !
He's really good at teaching..If u go see him during office hours, he's so nice to clarify everything. My TA is also Kate very helpful and nice, generously gave out grades...explain materials carefully and clearly. Tests is not hard but easy, cuz it's from textbook and notes. Attending lec and tut will help you to do well on the exam! recommended.
I agree. He's super nice man and jumpy. I got a good mark on my midterm kuz it's so easy. I just prepared for it the night be4 the test and I got almost 83% on that. Well, I always attended the class and fell asleep sometimes but I got good mark because his neat notes! its super clear and tests and finals were amazingly easy
One of the best Prof i had in Sfu, his notes are amazing, all the exam Q's are from his notes. His exams are very fare but hard true test of your knowledge. I would recommend taking him for Econ 342 and 345.
His notes are very organized - go to class and copy them! The textbook is also very useful for better understanding of the material. Decent Midterm, Tough Final. Lots of information so know it well!
not very good at explaining content, he basically reiterates the text book and does not explain further. content covered is irrelevant to actual practices in international trade.
Like honestly he teaches really damn well I have to say but honestly his midterm was sucha "****" the class avg was 53% so that kinda explains everything and hes like OMG its like the lowest avg Ive seen in this class so far...well the thing is that when we did the sample midterm it was totally different from the actual exam...and he said that th
was better teaching 105 than this class. sometimes goes off on tangents and makes notes about them even though it's totally irrelevant. Did most of my learning out of the textbook. there was confusion about the final and which chapters were covered (not his fault) but kinda ****ed me up :( final was a little brutal but mt was very fair
His lectures are mostly taken straight from the textbook, usually with the exact same examples used. The avereage for my class's midterm was 53%, so study a lot. The exams are fair though, make sure to know how the graphs work inside and out, and avoid surfacy, definitional level studying and you should be fine.
Pretty much notes, but it's clear and easy to copy. The exam is not so hard, but it's a little tricky.Remind all the formulas before exam. Above all, he is a good professor.
dun bother buying the textbook, his lecture notes are sufficient for the midterm and final exam. doing his assignments will help u prepare for exams. he's a pretty approachable guy and helps students. (lots of ppl ask him Qs during break and he doesnt mind). he sure likes his coke zero tho. take neat notes tho! and use diff color pens for graphs
I wasn't expecting to get much out of macro since I really disliked micro, but this class was engaging and informative. Easy to copy notes, fair exam, and I liked his grading scheme. Always available to help, highly recommended.
sends out class notes in advance and overall is a very fair prof. As long as you study the notes you're all set. Easy A, go take his classes!
His materials are very good. He teaches the good stuff. However, his exams are pretty darn hard. Not an easy A. You have to study quite a bit on your own since the assignments are very minimal. 30% of people failed the first midterm.
good class ever
We need more David Cox in SFU! This prof's level of understanding in what he's teaching is amazing. He is able to communicate the materials in a way that none of the econ profs have been able to do. I just wish there's more time to learn from him.
a very good prof, u can get a high mark if u follow him and understand all the notes, exactly one of the best prof in sfu
easy class. his lecture notes are clear, and very helpful. Assignments were easy if you put some effort. Midterm was pretty easy and final was ok. if you read the text and lecture notes few times, you'll be fine. recommended!
He sends his notes prior class. no need to buy the textbook, study his notes can lead you to a good grade. Easy midterm and assignments.
great prof. very clear. knows his stuff, great notes. didn't like his personality tho. he was moody. impolite towards TAs and students. his mt was fair. final was unfairly cumulative. His practice final was deceiving. at least 60% of questions on the final were from before the mt. all in all good lecturer, awful personality. still recommend him tho
boring lec, makes people falling asleep. do not recommend
The class is incredibly boring, but it is pretty impossible to make Finance interesting so you can't put all the blame on Dave. He encourages questions from students and his exams are straight from his notes, so memorize them!
Not a big fan of econ and graphs, but if you study his notes well and do the practice questions for tutorial then you'll do fine. Lectures were a bit boring, but it's economics...usually not super interesting.
His lectures are so boring that it makes everyone fall asleep. Stopped attending lectures after the first few weeks. Just read the textbook and his lecture notes (which he sends out) and you'll be fine. There's always tutorial for extra help too. Not a bad prof, just extremely boring
Just read the textbook and the powerpoint slides that he sends out and you'll be fine.
The students does nothing but stare his presentations. It is really boring class. I cant concentrate on the lecture. I fall asleep.
Very boring, but if you can learn from the book like me the class is simple. Don't bother going to lecture as it is useless, I stopped attending after week 3. Good Luck!!
Not the most engaging professor(I stopped going to lecture after week 3) but he is so easy. I kept up with the readings to do the HW, then gave the book one good read before exams and ended up with an A in the course. Highly recommend!
I really enjoyed this class. I love instructors that provide clear and thorough lecture notes, so you can actually focus on their lecture during class, instead of madly scribbling down notes. He followed his notes precisely. He is a great teacher, very clear, no language problems. He is approachable and encourages questions during class.
great guy, and excellent class. this has got to be one of the best courses i have taken at SFU, and he does a great job teaching it. the stuff you learn is actually useful, especially if you are actually interested in business, mainly finance, and economics. Definitely recommend
Dave is a smart, good guy who is very willing to help you if you seek him out. I found his lectures a little dryboring, but they were never confusing. I found his exams to be very fair, and if you put in the work, you would get an A.
easy exams, just read the textbook and the notes he sends out and you're looking at an A in this course. very boring lectures stopped attending after the first month, but you will benefit from the low class averages and the bell curve at the end.
I'm confused, this class was way to difficult. Not an engaging prof. This class was like buy the book, and live by the book LOL. Lots of self-teaching and thinking about life. If you do take this course.. Bring a pillow to class.
Going to class is honestly a waste of time since he sends the notes home anyway. Stay home or just don't attend and read the book instead during this time. Keep up with homework and make your own notes and you should be fine! Very boring, no disrespect to Cox, but Cox out!
he's straight to the point during lecture and if you don't understand something, you can find it in the book. memorize your formulas! you'll need them for the midterm and the final to answer some questions... even if it doesn't say to write one, do it! those formulas cost me a bunch of marks
You honestly don't have to go to class if you just read his notes or read the textbook. Hes a nice guy and can be funny here and there. I liked him, even though I didn't go to class often. His exams are not that hard at all, but if you have to know everything. I found the final easier than MT which i got B's on both. Recommend Mr. Dave Cox!
Not a hard prof at all. Make sure you read the textbook, it is essential to doing well in this course. The multiple choice will be a breeze but be careful, the short answer is where most students lose marks. MAJOR WARNING: He DOESN'T curve his course. How you do is translated into the appropriate letter grade. So don't rely on the curve to do well.
Stopped attending lecture after a month... Just read the textbook, the notes he sends out and do the homework and you're looking at an A in this course. Easy midterms and finals!
Tests are pretty difficult. Although you have the option to have your midterm exempt, but that makes your final worth 90% of your grade. I never went to lecture because they were so boring, I just read the textbook and still ended with a C+ in the course.
He seems very knowledgable and interested in economics. For teaching economics, he made the course fairly bare able. The course in particular was very difficult, as there was not much practice for the final. Just a midterm and a final. Good prof, bad course.
Dave Cox is super knowledgeable, the problem is the course content is unbearably boring. Do your tutorial assignments and do your textbook reading. Average course, you get what you put into it. Class is unbearable and not really necessary if you do well with self studies.
He was a nice prof, but his lectures were boring because he simply just read out the slides he made. However, the overall course was okay, the exams were based heavily on the lecture slides. As long as you study and understand the lecture slides, you will do well in this course. The average was so low because most students didn't attend classes
Read the textbook, you'll pass for sure. Easy prof easy life. Don't have to go to lectures because he literally takes his notes off the textbook.
He is one of my favourite prof at SFU!
Stopped going to lecture after first 2 weeks. Read (and fully understand) the slides he sends out AND the textbook - you're looking at an easy A+ as the class is curved and the class avg is usually low.
Not essential to go to lectures, they're boring and long, as he sends out lecture notes and you can just read the textbook and notes as they're basically the same. As long as you can understand his notes you should be able to get an easy A.
I absolutely love Dave Cox! He is very clear and detailed on his notes and you need a book only for reference. It is really helpful reading his notes carefully for exams. Fair exams, mosly directly from lecture notes and no surprising material. He is nice too! Fair marker as well! I actually learn a lot at this course and will take his course again
Professor Cox provides students with amazing notes which makes it easy to do well on tests. I just studied his class notes and ended up with an A+ in the class. Lectures are boring but that's to be expected with an intro class.
I never pay attention during lectures cuz he just read his notes and the examples he demonstrates in class are exact words from the textbook. I only spend 3-4 days before the final exam to read all the chapters for this course, and ended up an A . EASY COURSE AS LONG AS U READ THE BOOK CAREFULLY
really boring
If you want to go to a lecture in which a professor just reads off hand written notes, take a class with him. Extremely boring! Has everything written out prior to the class and just rushes through it! DO NOT take a class with him if you are in to learning through lectures instead of the book!
Avoid his 345 class at all costs all he does is read his lecture slides in the most monotonous voice. Class is like a black hole that sucks the life out of you. You learn nothing from this class, no engagement. If you are looking to enjoy your econ class this is definitely not the prof to take it with. Be prepared to do a lot of self studying!
ECOn 345 class is very boring and most of the time the prof is just reading off the slides. Material is boring anyways but useful for finance fundamentals. Tests are not easy since it can be all over the place, I studied hard for Optimum Currency Area and it should definitely be tested but there was NOTHING on it in the final... (
Lectures were really heard to follow. Like the prof was clear but material just very dry. Going to class is not needed. Just read over his notes or the textbook then you will do fine :)
Professor Cox's exams were so easy, anyone who complains about the level of difficulty did not put in any effort because the exams were based solely on his notes.
Super easy class with Cox. No need for going to the lecture. As long as you read the textbook carefully and finish the assignments he assigns before the final exam, it will be an easy A! DON'T READ HIS NOTES! READ TEXTBOOK!
Very, very dry lectures. He does post all his notes which is nice. Most boring class of university thus far.
THE question on midterm you have never seem before, you do't even know what's the question asked. the exam will be harder in the next, if you wanna challenge yourself, you can try, he almost fail 20% every semester
I find lecture not helpful at all, you really need to put in a lot of time studying. Lectures were very heavy and compacted, if you lose focus, you'll probably miss something important. The prof seems hard to approach, he seems as if he doesn't care about his students but maybe because its such a large class.
Not a hard class if you can read a textbook and take your own notes. There is no need for attending lectures.
Going to lectures for this class is not necessary as his notes are a copy of the textbook. Exams were not too difficult. Averages are low but it is not hard to do well if you read the textbook, look over his notes, and do the assignment questions. He does not curve his course so don't rely on a low class average to get a good mark in this class.
Dave's notes are very thorough with everything you need to know. I actually gave up reading the textbook after the midterm because the textbook is extremely dry and instead just relied solely on the notes and listening to his lectures. He is clearly passionate about economics and taught the material well. He won't inspire or amuse but he's solid.
Lectures were very dry but useful for the midterm short answer questions so sit in the front to pay attention. There are homework assignments but they are fairly straight forward. Overall, the material itself is pretty easy to understand, but I would not recommend taking this course if it is not mandatory.
He's an alright prof. No need for lectures because his notes and examples in class are literally a copy of the textbook. You don't really need the textbook either other than for the questions and clarification. Assignments are short and easy. Tests are perfectly fair and easy if you do the study guide and study his notes.
Lectures were dry, basically read the notes that he posted online. Notes were often unclear and missed some points so it's a smart idea to read the textbook as well. Exams and homework were decent. My main issue with Dave was that he didn't scale or curve the class at the end and the class average was a C. Decent prof and class as far as ECON goes.
His lectures are long and boring. Rarely attend the lecture. Tips for getting a good grade: READ THE TEXTBOOK AND YOU WILL BE GOOD. I was below average for the midterm cuz I just read his notes. Spend 3 days before the final to go through the whole textbook and got an A for this course.
Easy course, but makes it hard. mid term is fair but final is not really relevant to the material covered in class. Lectures are heavy.
Skipped most of his lectures. Boring lectures. Just buy the textbook and use the study guide. Read it and do questions from the study guide. Got an A on the midterm and studied simply by reading the textbook and doing questions on the study guide. Final is decent as well. Teaches Econ how it should be taught. No complaints here
Notes are hand written and scanned into a 30 page pdf. file but are very thorough and clear so you can essentially teach yourself. Lectures and tutorials are quite dry and not very engaging - thus only 20-30% of the class actually attends lecture. Exams are MC and long answer, which are difficult but fair. Average mark on midterm 55-65%.
his exams are fair. If you study the textbook, you should do well. His classes are boring but he makes up for it by giving easy exams.
People who say his lectures are boring are people who have no interest in Economics. David is an awesome lecturer and gives great explanations of macroeconomic concepts. Read textbook and attend lectures.
Although I found his class boring, he teaches ECON 105 the way it should be taught. He is definitely an easier compared to the other profs. I found the final easier than the midterm. To do well in his class, you should be constantly reviewing the KEY concepts in his lecture notes, read the book and BUY THE STUDY GUIDE!!!!!!!!
His lecture is really boring. You don't need to listen any lectures. Just read your his notes, which is really similar as textbook. Just read notes and hand in assignment. And his exams are fair
You can tell that prof. cox is trying to not be boring. he inflects his voice and gives real-life examples. In spite of which, every time he speaks, I just want to go to sleep. The good thing is that he gives you notes so that you don't have to read the textbook. Stil, it's best not to take his classes. He's the most boring prof I've ever had
Prof Cox is definitely very knowledgeable about the subject. Though as a 400-seminar, wasn't much discussion. 1 final paper + in-class presentation. His exams make you think (not direct memorize-spew of info), and he adequately prepares you with his in-depth notes. Easily accessible for questions (responds e-mails pretty quick). Fair grader
As everyone says, his lectures are pretty boring. I bombed the midterm, stopped going to class and just studied everything on my own and finished with an A (final mark can replace midterm mark). His exams are fair, just study the lecture notes and the textbook and you will do well.
He is the worst prof i ever had in SFU. His way of teaching is boring and so hard to follow. Come to his lecture doesnt help at all because all he do is just reading the lecture slide. His exam marking are so difficult.
Very boring lectures content is okay. Easy to teachyourself material read slides and text. Could easily skip lectures.
Worst prof ever met, and his lecture is so boring. Basically what he do is just reading his hand written lecture notes. The best thing of class is the classroom, help me get sleep easily.
tok gis class and failed royally, good thing prof COX had some "extra credit" ;)
This class is hard if you dont read the unreadable notes (his handwriting is hard to understand; he doesnt type out his notes, he projects them instead). The exams are extremely difficult and tests you based on a lot of theories and graphs. The tutorials are not that useful. I wouldnt recommend taking his class unless necessary. BEWARE!
This prof provides notes that have unreadable handwritings, therefore it is hard to read off them. He doesn't type out his notes. The exams were hard and contains a lot of theories and graphs which were "outside-of-the-box" - it's not on the textbook. His lectures were boring and easily skippable as his voice will make you fall asleep. Avoid D COX!
He is a good prof. I think that he is a much better prof online rather than in person because his lectures move pretty slowly. Enjoyable to have on in the background at home but dry when in person. His lectures felt redundant and could have had more energy put into them.
Very knowledgeable prof. Lectures draw directly from textbook concepts and readings, with additional *spice* added by Professor Cox. Very easy tests -- if you are well prepared. To score highly, I suggest completing all assigned textbook readings before lecture to fully understand Professor Cox's analyses and explanations. Great guy!
I did find the lectures interesting but at times it was boring because the amount of content that was read straight from the PDF was majority and then explains the current state of the economy with real life examples. He forgives the midterm if the final is a higher score. The exams are easy if you understand the application of graphs and formulas.
Lectures were solid. He really knows his stuff. Students can learn a lot if they come to his lectures, though he prints his lecture notes and so many students do not show and miss out. My only complaint are his tests. Several short answer questions on both the mid-term & final, imo, do not properly gauge students' learning of the course material.
