I got an A+ in every toher class I took at UVic and B+ in his class....I think that speaks for itself
Insanely boring, complicated lectures, over detailed notes. Same thing with exam, asks minor details and nit picks. Definately nicer than his pre-heart attack days though.
Very patronizing in lecture...who actually talks like that? Teaches tiny details and tests them, fails to give students the general picture of what is happening. Tests are hard so study his notes very well. Makes you feel dumb if you ask questions by giving very complicated answers. Asks for feedback after tests but doesn't seem like he cares
Yes his MC tests are detailed. Yes you have to study. There are 400 people in this class. He can't just "give" 300 people an A with easy, answer so obvious tests. You'll get an A if you work hard for it. "Detailed" Notes and use of WebCT, better than what alot of profs do for you. He's kind and fun to listen to. But study hard; not an easy one.
Main issue with his teaching are the ridiculous guessing games he calls exams. His tests were absurdly hard and nauseatingly specific. Keep up your lab mark, it'll save you.
Creasey was so much better than what I'd heard. Excellent notes & he's a good lecturer. Hard tests? You bet- some of the most malicious M/C I've seen in 3 years. Only tests out of the notes which is nice, but could ask any little detail, so study EVERYTHING. A very demanding but certainly possible class. At least he's more interesting than Beauliea
I don't want to be slanderous or anything, but if there is such thing as reincarnation, I'm sure that in a past life, Creasey was head of the Gulag during the Great Terror. While personally he was very nice, he was absolutely vicious with tests, and his lectures are the oratorical equivelant of a couple of qualudes. Avoid at all costs.
Very bad teacher, very patronizing, actually takes joy in in students doing poorly on his tests. one test less than 10 students got the correct MC answer on two questions, he just laughed when going over the test, cause it was not his test that was bad!! Avoid him if you can ,unfortunatly you can't if you take Biology @ uvic
Just wrote midterm1. What are you ppl talking about?! Study the notes he gives you and you will do fine. His questions are fair although some do make you think harder than others... but than again, isn't that the point?!
He was teaching this course this semester until they changed him due to bad health. He is hard, you go to his lectures and don't get anything. You panic and feel awful. Once you get to study and spend a day per topic you will get it. I won't recommend him, but he is not impossible. But think before you talk to him..he says harsh things
Excellent teacher...great notes that were easy to understand...and he is very excited to teach and help students learn. He is extremely approachable and will help you for as long as you need..study and you will do really well!! One of the best in the biology department i've come across!
He was a better prof than I expected. His notes on the internet were usually clear, although he could go a bit slower in class. His test were okay if you studied, but still was not an easy pass. However he has little to no respect for students, and had the hardest part of the course taught by a sub prof becuase of an illness (hes always sick)

Horrible. Unapologetically mocks his students, tests are RIDICULOUS, clearly loves to fail kids. Basically everything you do not want in a prof. Guarantee he gets a kick from reading stuff like this on ratemyprof.com.
An awful teacher! Seem to be at the university simply to collect a paycheque and further his own career. Cares not about students or their understanding of the subject. Text is required and very rarely, if ever, referenced. In-class notes are written in unintelligible shorthand that is utterly useless when you are reviewing your notes.

Don't mind the other reviews; he's a good teacher. Text rarely used; you could prob'ly get away w/ just using one in library. Lots of material to memorize, lots of obscure stuff, but presented clearly. Clearly enjoys the subject and makes it interesting. Keep up, study hard for tests and you'll be fine.
A fast-paced course. About a chapter of the text book covered per class. Although the classes could be mundane at times, he was interesting enough that I never fell asleep in his 8:30 am class. If you want to do well in this course, READ THE TEXT BOOK! The midterm covered things that were not explicitly covered in class, but were in the text.
READ THE TEXT BOOK! I didn't and ... uhh I think I failed. Boring prof, irritating, and just...ugh, bad class!
one of the worst teachers i've ever had
illegible notes, extreme lack of respect for students, talking down to them, making fun of questions asked, posted online movies because he didn't cover all the material in class; terrible teacher. Course not very hard if you know how to study, but not worth the time with creasey as teacher. class made me want to change my major of biology.
Creasey was boring, but if you attended class and took notes you should do okay. I didn't use the textbook once, though, everything was in the notes.
Excellent professor. I have never fallen asleep in his class because he always makes you think in lecture instead of droning out information. His videos are very helpful for summarizing key points and seeing relationships between topics. Tests are rather difficult, but fair. Highly recommend despite bad press.
He is not a bad person, but not a great teacher. Tests questions are tricky, need to know small details. Print off notes helpful (RECORD SMALL DETAILS FROM CLASS!) .. will be on test.
Brutal.
arrogant, talks more about himself than material at hand. tests not what is required, but his own personal hypothesis' and thoughts. More worried about his research and paycheque than teaching and helping students
Brutal Brutal and Brutal!!! THIS COURSE SUCKS, ITS SO BORING AND DEFINITELY ONLY TAKE IT IF YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO! AND THE TEACHER....o god....Creasey is boring as hell and he doesnt make the material interesting. his notes are great but the midterm is an effing cow! be prepared to fail! the final....is...devastating! i love biology but i cried...
Good teacher - very interesting, and makes the class fun. Study a lot for tests and you will do well: there's a lot of memorization and processes to understand. Helpful outside of class if you can book an appointment. Don't expect class or tests to be easy.
What can I say that everyone else hasn't? He's not a bad guy but he's pretty boring and the midterm was pretty bad but in retrospect the final was a lot worse! Study HARD!!!
Not very receptive to questions and test on minor details such as Nobel prize winners (unrelated to the class). Awesome notes, but very hard tests.
The class was spilt into two parts..each with a different prof. Ill admit creasys part was way better. However, it still wasnt that great, definitly alot of work needed to be put in, and unless you absolutely love plants and fungi or have to take this course as a pre-req..dont take it.
This prof is the WORST I have ever had. He is arrogant, patronizing, self-absorbed, and an overall horrible teacher. His lectures are absolutely useless. I stopped going to them after the first month. He has got to be here because of his research, because it certainly isn't for his teaching. RETIRE! and save yourself from hell fire.
I found the questions on the midterm to be very tricky. Almost like he wanted you to get it wrong. It is a MUST to come to class (no matter how hard it is to stay awake) because he fills in the notes he posts with random testable stuff. He LOVES details so prepare for random out of left field questions. As a person he seems a bit into himself.

He is tough but fair. It is necessary to go to lecture and read the textbook to get a reasonably good mark in his course.
OK so lots of people say he's evil and can't teach but really how many university profs can? If you want to be successful you need to rise above the teaching and teach yourself. Creasey is decent, at least he was a million times better than Beaulieu. The exam at the end was straightforward as long as you do study.
Really great professor! His tests are hard but he is very available outside of class time to help you. Make sure you understand all the notes and you'll do well in the class.

I don't understand why people say bad things about him. He's actually not that bad. His notes are very clear and organized, which I liked. Although his mc Q's can be tricky (It's either you know the concept very clear or don't know about it at all), his tests are fair enough if you study his notes and read the text.
Bit of a boring lecturer. You can skip his class so long as you print off the class notes and read the textbook. His midterm was harder than expected though, his m/c choice questions are tricky! Seems like a fairly friendly guy. Satisfactory.
Wasn't a fan. I felt like I couldn't ask questions. Like I was already supposed to know what he was talking about. Am I not paying $450 a class to be TAUGHT? I'm in the class because I have no idea what you are talking about, but I'm interested to learn. Don't assume I'm brilliant, and know all of the answers before i take your class.
Creasey uses his own course pack notes that you print out. He very energetic and enthusiastic lecture that I really enjoyed. He was very clear in lecture and was easily available during office hours. The course was pretty hard for first year, but his lecture was really good.
I thought Creasey's print out notes were very helpful, but filling in the blanks was the only thing that kept me awake during class. The midterms were easy enough too, but if you skip a lot like I did, make sure to read the text and fill in the blanks in his notes.
One of the worst, I've know people that had him 5 years ago and say the same things, not only is it hard to stay awake but he thinks very highly of himself and treats students like they're all idiots. He'll say that everything on the exams are from his notes and that he wants you to succeed, but he's lying. Avoid if possible.
Interesting class that I do enjoy going to lectures !! Lab components are well planned!!.....but be reminded that exams & midterms are tough!!....if u take this course, be ready for remember lots of stuff~~
Not nearly as bad as his reputation.... I found his teaching style useful!
brutal

this professor is garbage
Has a really bad reputation, but is a good prof. Doesn't pull any surprises on midterms or exams; what he teaches is what you get. Text is kinda useless except to clarify points made in class. Also, profs don't get "investigated" for hard tests, and Creasey's are some of the fairest I've taken.
He's awesome. The guy wins teaching awards for a reason that's very clear once you take his class. The only thing I would get him to do is warn students on the first day that they absolutely need to know the details of everything and understand it completely if they want to well. He gives you all the tools to do well, you just have to use them!!!!!
I like him!
Not bad prof, can be a bit grumpy in class, especially if cell phones ring. Doesn't seem to like students to ask questions in class.
quite possibly the most unfair prof to ever teach. so much so that he was suspended by the university for failing too many students. Avoid his classes at ALL costs.
I'd reccommend him, even though hes pretty tough. He tries to make the material interesting, and as long as you know everything he puts in the coursepack, and what he comments on in class, you should be set.
Tests were fair and the lectures were filled with interest tidbits that helped you pay attention. He makes his own coursepacks which replace the textbook and makes studying easier. His tests were easier than 190a, there are no "two of the above" answers, the lab still sucks though.
Didn't seem happy to be teaching a first year course, one of my least favourite profs ever.
I had heard not very good things about Creasy's class prior to taking it but it seems as though he has smartened up. He was an alright professor.. could be rude to a few students at times but I found his Exam to be very fair. Not too hard not too easy. Everything on the test we had previously learned so there were no surprises.
Remember that south park episode where John Edward is declared the best (something or other) in the universe.. well John Edward.. you have some stiff competition. horrible proff, stay away.. stay far far away
I had him for 190A so I knew what to expect. To my surprise, he was a lot better in Bio 225. Maybe because he enjoyed teaching the course more, but I felt he had a concern for the fairness of his tests and his students.
His class was the worst. His test questions didn't make sense (like riddles) and when you want to talk to him outside of class time, he's a prick... Thought Profs are suppose to be nice and helpful when you need to see them for extra help. Shesh, I'm majoring in Bio..better not be running into him that often!
I did not enjoy the material he taught, and I found him to be a pretty bad teacher. Although he was pretty funny, he was definitely lacking a lot in the clarity. I wouldn't recommend him if you can possibly take anyone else, although I think he is the only one who teaches the first part of BIOL 190A :(
I really enjoyed having Creasy as a prof. I never really personally saw why everyone dislikes him... He seems like a nice guy and his tests are difficult yet fair. Overall, 225 was an awsome course
A good teacher you can see why he won awards for his teaching. His tests were tough but reasonably fair. Really a funny guy reminded me of the comedian THAT CANADIAN GUY
He is very condescending. It borders on bullying. Teaches the material well enough, and is clear. He takes it out on the students who CAME to class when he is mad about those who DONT show up.
Hilarious teacher, entertaining and very clear. However, a tad **** and condescending. It's lucky his lectures are good enough that you may never have to approach him.
Not a terrible prof, his reputation is much worse than the actual experience. Listen carefully, don't ask stupid questions and you won't feel bullied! He was good about clearly answering questions that haven't already been answered. Exams are detailed but if you go to class and understand the material then you'll be fine.
Creasey makes sure that everyone knows he's an expert in this field, and YOU aren't, and that he was the first prof to use overhead projecters, yadayada. Makes you feel stupid if you ask for help, but if you COME TO CLASS PREPARED, then you will be fine. Also THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A STUPID QUESTION, so don't let him bully you into thinking it
Sure his tests are ridiculously hard.. but so is the subject material. Great teacher in my opinion
Very hard to follow/ pay attention in class...
He makes an easy class imposable. Lectures are completely useless to learn anything, but they are the only place to get the information for the course. Most people fail his class because theres no way to get the information outside of his boringass lectures. Worst teacher i have EVER HAD!
Very hard to understand, speaks beyond the range of most students knowlege, uses terms before they are explained. Refuses to answer questions and says "look in the course pack notes" Tests are impossible and very detailed. Expect to memorize every single detail if you want a passing mark. Averages on midterms: fail-65%
He does know his material very well. He will hit you with some pretty difficult terms. He expects you to be at quite a high level of knowledge going into the class. Study up! He uses short hand for much of his notes and when it comes time to study the notes will be confusing. Take notes in class and study the textbook. Not impossible.
What can I say, Creasey is Creasey haha. I like his teaching style and the way he organizes his notes. It can be ridiculously detailed sometimes, so study for his tests. Don't expect to breeze through this course, it's meant to weed out people who aren't serious about biology. A good prof in my opinion.
Not great. He's very smart, and he makes sure you know that by using level-inappropriate terminology and detail. Can be very rude to students if you catch him on a bad day. An attitude adjustment could make him one of the best profs at UVic, as his teaching style and oration are excellent.
Creasey's a good teacher, strong speaker, nice dude, and FAIR. If you're lazy and you don't show up to class (first-years?) then yeah, it's gonna be hard. If you show up to class and study reasonably hard, you're going to do reasonably well. Simple simple, there are no surprises.
This was the worst class i have ever taken in my life. Creasey = Prick. notes he gives in class are ridiculous! The Lab is disorganized and lab manual is of no help even though they tell you its all in there. They don't do a good enough job of telling you how to do your write-ups and when you get them back your dumbfounded by it. AVOID At ALL COSTS
Creasey Creasey... What can i say about this guy? He likes biology, he likes to teach but does he know how to teach well? NOT!! The message is very poorly delivered. The labs are very boring. Marking may be unfair and harsh sometimes. I don't know what's going through prof's head today but just making us memorise details without understanding does
Definitely better as a second year prof than a first year prof. All he really wants is to be listened to without any interruption whatsoever. Classes are boring as heck with many people using the hour and a half to catch up on sleep. Tests are fair enough if you manage to memorize every word on every page that you are given.
Creasey is a good prof... you just have to give him a chance. Yes, there is a lot of information and he expects you to be very familiar with it, but it's definitely doable. If you skip classes expect to pay the price, but what do you expect?
intense. very clear. lots of material, really expects you to know your stuff. not particually interesting but a good teacher all the same. great notes.
Creasey...I'm sure he's a nice guy in real life but his teaching is amazingly terrible. When going through his notes(which are actually good) he circles every little thing on the paper, making it impossible to know the important stuff. He also uses pretentious language, using words that few understand and which don't convey the point any better.
no comment
gives great notes, and explains concepts very well. Although you are expected to know alot, as long as you put the time in and study his notes, there are no tricks. What you see is what you get.
I actually really like how he teaches the course, his notes are detailed but organized and once you figure out how to study for his tests (basically, don't leave out any details) you can do really well in his classes. Not the nicest guy to talk to. I'm in biochem right now with Romaniuk and I almost miss Creasey.
Why hasn't anybody gone to the department about him? This shouldn't be taken lying down. He is the only option for biology 225 for summer studies and I don't want to have to deal with him again. When's his sabbatical?
He's a good teacher and lecturer..make sure you go to every class. Make sure you learn how to study for his class...write cue cards and memorize everything. Also, I agree w/ the comment a couple below me...once you have Romaniuk...you'll wish for good ole Creasy back!
His lectures are awesome, you pretty much have to attend if you want to do well.
The amount of material in the notes was overwhelming at first, but they were extremely helpful. After taking biochem with Romaniuk I definitely miss Creasey's notes. His tests were kind of tough, but they were fair.
Want to make this clear: When you finish your semester and having absolutely no idea about the subject EVEN THOUGH you got a decent grade, then the teacher is not doing a good job. I don't feel that I have learned or remembered anything from this class! Waste of time to me but too bad that I need the credits. Right Mr. Creasey?
Dr. C is one of the worse profs I have had. He is a jerk to his students when they try to ask questions. His classes themselves are fine, boring but fine. Read the text for sure, he takes alot of questions from there. know his notes inside and out.
Horrible professor, tests are impossible. Lucky to pass.. just too bad you need a minimum C grade to go anywhere....
His test are ridiculous. He doesn't test on overall knowledge of the material. Instead, he asks absurce questions that were mentioned when passing through a topic.
He is clearly passionate about Biology, but his tests are absolutely ridiculous. This is an introductory course, but he throws in an unbelievable amount of verbose, particular facts, all of which are testable. The class average is around 60%- way too low for an intro class. I spent countless sleepless nights memorizing obscure facts.
this prof requires you to memorize a ridiculous amount of details, even if you studied literally hours and hours for his tests, you'll still end up guessing between 2 multiple choice. Which means if you're not too familiar with a participle chapter, you'll likely be clueless with his mc tests.
This class is brutal. He must like the sound of his own voice, because he will ramble on about extra information, which is testable. He expects every single detail to be memorized. Be prepared to memorize everything and understand nothing. I dropped this class after the midterm and will not be taking Bio 225 with him again!
By the way, I am very sure he took the picture above and posted it here. I know he is a curious guy and I bet he checks this site everyday and takes a grin. :-[
Although everyone else hated him according to this site, I actually liked him! I though his tests were fair, and I thought they were consistent. Every test I wrote I spent a similar ammount of time preparing, and got practically the same score on all 3 which was nice. He was always helpful in office hours... maybe i caught him on a good day?
Although Dr. Creasey first comes across as an abrasive and arrogant person, once you have proven that you take his course seriously, do the work and are not willing to put up with his b.s. he becomes extremely approachable and helpful. Aside from which his lectures are always clearly presented, professional and extremely helpful if you are prepared
Loved the class. Very interesting. Make sure you know the little details (he loves testing those). Very good lecture slides (didn't use textbooks just learned from the notes). He likes people when they come to his office and at least know partially what you are talking about (study beforehand).
Expects you to know the topic inside and out BEFORE you actually attend lecture. Making you think... WHY EVEN GO?!Uses ridiculously jargoned terms and language beyond what any first year would know. AWEFUL teacher. simple as that
Likes to add -ase on to every word, to sound smart i suppose
This guy is a brutal teacher. Unless you really, really like what he teaches, you will not learn a thing. All he does is put up notes, read the notes, circle the titles, and expect you to know everything in full detail.
Creasey is easily one of the best professors UVic science has to offer. I like everyone else struggled with his class in 190A but I now realize the reason I struggled and moaned was because I didn't put the work in. First year's stop complaining just do the work.
Don't become swayed by the poor reviews for Creasey on this site. This class has a lot of complex processes to understand, but Creasey teaches in probably the best way possible. His notes summarize the key ideas, which is much better than reading through pages and pages of the text. His midterm was very fair. If you study you will do well.
Creasey is a really hard prof. For an intro class and usually an elective, he makes it feel like you are supposed to be a third year bio student. He freaks if he sees people on their cell phones or will give you the stare down. If you have the choice between him and anyone else for 150A or B, take the other !
Before starting Creasey's class, I was told he was extremely hard and his midterms would drag you to hell. But fortunately this was not the case. Creasey is extremely helpful and his notes are great, though he does tend to go crazy with arrows sometimes. The only way you can fail his class is if you don't study. Review everyday and you'll do great!
I think he is a good prof. There is a lot of info he has to cover so it does feel like he is throwing a lot at you, but he goes over everything you have to know which I think is nice. Also, at the beginning of his notes he has a check list for all the concepts, and at the end he had previous exam questions for you to do
Creasey really knows his stuff, but unfortunately he expects you to know it as well as he does. The notes are very clear but the material is just plain HARD, there are so many words you've never seen before to memorize and youll have to spend hours and hours before each test. If you can avoid this class, do it, because the content is torture.
he is THE hottest man alive
His classes are kind of boring and most of it is straight out of the text book, but he covers everything and his notes are thorough. He is very organized and knows what he is talking about, but expects students to pick up things at lightning speed. Mid term was pretty easy.
Uses A LOT of abbreviations and jargon. Teaches way beyond the scope of the course. The only upside is if you take this course on a year where he's on academic probation then the exams are super easy. But if your unlucky hold on to your shorts Dorothy its gonna be a bumpy ride. Know everything. EVERYTHING!!!
Dr. Creasy definitely knows his stuff. The notes he prepares are the best out of any prof I've ever had. Everything that will be tested is in them. I didn't even buy a text book. Midterms/final not to bad but you have to know some hinky dinky details that most profs would just skip over. Overall, not to bad
Despite previous ratings, this prof was one of the best I've had. He was really prepared for his lectures and his notes were clear and detailed. Midterm questions were very similar to the practice questions at the end of the chapter so we knew what and how to study. He really loves what he does and you just have to respect that or get kicked out.
I HATED Creasey for Bio190A, I did very very poorly and in turn was dreading Bio225. Fortunately, it has gone much much better! I now realize that it was MY fault I did so poorly in 190A, I simply did not study enough/correctly. I still believe expectations are too high for a 190A but Bio 225 is do-able with more studying. Beware of the lab!
Honestly I would transfer schools just to not have to do Bio 190A at this school with him and Beaulieau. The final exam was 100% unreasonable, I studied for days and days and paid for a prep course, and they made the exam so obscure, only guessing was possible. Transfer schools if you are taking science. STAY AWAY!!!
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. the final was AAAABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE. stay away and beware. horrible prof, writes unbelievable tests, even if you study for days.
Charismatic man. Insanely difficult exams.
I read these reviews before going into this class and i was honestly terrified to take this class. I didn't think it was that hard though. I see people who have said that they studied for days before the final and didn't do well but i only studied for a day and i got through it fine. There were some fairly obscure facts but i would have to say it w
I think that Dr.Creasey is a good prof. He is abit hard to approach during office hours. But we got to understand he is a human being too, he have like thousands of students going to his office hours than he would have no time for himself. Dr.Creasey help me alot. He is a nice human being. I can understand his frastruction with students. If you wor
Had Creasey for 190A and thought it was really hard! Then I went into 190B and 225 and realized just how amazing Dr. Creasey is. His notes are really thurough! The tests are not hard if you put a little effort in... read the textbook pages before or within a few days of the lecture!! Got an A+ on both midterms with ~2 days of studying each!
Don't get me wrong, Creasey's exams are a bit on the difficult side, but his notes are AWESOME and if you study them you WILL DO WELL!! I didn't even crack my textbook and still got an A. So anyone complaining about how hard the tests are... welcome to university. Once you take a bio class with a really terrible prof, Creasey will seem like the man
His tests can be difficult since with him, anything said is free game. Study throughly and you'll do fine. Pay close attention to what he says as well!
Creasey is the best prof I've had. Students need to appreciate just how much effort he's put into making our notes FOR US. Treat them like gold!! Yes they are long but they explain EVERYTHING you need to know. He's also hilarious, I'll never forget how to remember "kinky" phospholipids (LOL), or 5'-3' DNA synthesis. I hope to have him next year!
Good notes. Uses two tablets. Useful for when something needs to be drawn.
Yes there are a lot of material, but his notes are very helpful. Very good prof, really knows his stuff.
I don't know why people hate on Creasey. He really knows his stuff, his notes are very good, and he is great if you need extra help outside of class.
I had a wonderful conversation with Dr.Creasey about what it means to be a Jahova witness today and I'm so glad we're going to be in heaven together. If you can take a class with him you should! and also you should ask him about his thoughts on heaven. he's so wise.
Went to see him during his office hours. He made me wait 40 min. without as much as a nod... I got an A, but had no idea of material, just memorized all the details. Multiple choice exams not testing on the material, but on whether you can figure out if two or three of the above are correct. Switched my major away from biology to avoid 225.
I don't get why everyone hates creasey for 190. I really enjoy his lectures and I think he is so excited about what he is teaching. Compared with Dr. Gregory's lectures its an amazing change! Tests are hard but if you study for then properly then you will do well. this is university, its gonna be slightly difficult sometimes.
I thoroughly enjoy Creasey's lectures. He's into what he's teaching, and that makes it easier for students to get into it, too. He really knows what he's talking about. He does take his time with his lectures, so some material isn't covered, but he doesn't test you on it. Rarely has issues with organization in his notes.
If you don't like to pay attention in class and you don't know how to study for a university level course, avoid Creasey. If you're a level-headed individual who understands that YOU are responsible for your grade, you'll enjoy his class. He knows his stuff and is excited to teach it. He's also pretty funny, so the material is memorable as well.
Writes the hardest exams. In a split course with 2 profs, expect your mark on Creasey's exam to be at least 20% lower.
Extremely hard tests. Don't Bother learning concepts or ideas, just memorize terms that he writes with his little red pen. You can forget it all after his test.
Circles and underlines EVERYTHING on his powerpoints making it hard to understand what's important and what isn't. Be prepared to do badly on his exam, but study the stupid details in the notes and maybe you'll do alright.
I would say avoid at all cost, however it is basicly impossible if you are a biology student. A few tips, although his lectures are tollerable, his exams are ridiculously hard, study everything, study well. Dont ever use your cell phone or talk loudly in class, he will publicly humiliate you.
Great Prof! Didn't like for 190, but fabulous for 225. The tests are not as difficult as those in 190, and his notes are all you need to use to do well.
Dave is so passionate about his field of study. If you are struggling with this course do not hesitate to go to him for help. His tests are hard, but they are pulled straight from the notes! The text helps a lot to elaborate on the material that's harder to grasp.
very clear, excellent use of computer presentations. Great for office hours and does want his students to do well. His tests...well they are a bit ridiculous. They seem to avoid the obvious terms and he seems to just tests you on the smaller details that are hidden away in his notes. I would definitely recommend spending more time on the notes
I had him for 190A and his notes are pretty good. very detailed so it is a lot to study. Am scared to take 225 in the fall with him, but seeing a review saying how him/her didnt like Dave for 190 but did for 225 makes me feel a bit better. His tests are very detail-oriented. not just basic concepts, like at all. so just study those huge note books
What a terrible teacher dropping out because of him
Not only is he unhelpful, he actually set quiz rules that could (and did for some of us)have prevented half his students from even writing it, resulting in Fs all around. Boring and anal. I will never take his class again. He should have been written up or fired for what he put us through.
I have to agree with the comment before, the quiz rules are very wierd. He sets about a 30 hour time frame or so to do the quiz, which could FOR SURE result in ppl not doing it, cuz i ran into someone who couldnt in the time frame. Other than that, he provides SOLID notes (very smart and helpful). But the tests arewordy and detail oriented (tough!)
Just had cry times about ppl talking. Straight up whiny baby
Dr. Creasey . . . teaching style is over the heads of students, doesn't teach to level of student, terrible diagrams and class structure, over expectation and too heavy of work load, has runined my liking of Biology and future study in the subject area.
His notes are thorough and he is very clear on what he expects you to know. The only problem is that "what he expects you to know" is "everything". Test questions are weirdly obscure. But he's much easier to listen to than some of the other Bio profs, who have a tendency to drone. Don't spend the whole class talking, though!
There are no words to describe the magnificence of David Creasey. He is the most quirky individual you will ever have as a professor - so dorky, so hilarious. He has low patience with disruptive students and hates questions. His midterms/exams have some very specific questions about very obscure facts, but are overall fair.
MARVELOUS teacher who clearly loves what he studies and even more, imparting that knowledge. DR. CREASEY, YOUR COURSE PACK NOTES MAKE MY LIFE! Can you teach my other professors how to teach? Tests are fair, just listen in class and study the facts.
Creasey is a fair professor. All the questions he asks can be found within the notes he hands out. You dont have to go to class to learn but make sure you copy the notes he adds as a lot of his questions are from there. Anyone who says he is too hard doesnt know how to learn as it is a relatively easy course being first year.
He is a very straightforward and to the point teacher. He tested on details, details, details. Broader concepts were often ignored, which I found to be unhelpful. As long as you read the textbook you should do fine on his tests.
Abominable. Spews out overly detailed and useless information. Fails to connect chapters to each other or look at the big picture. Doesn't care. Unavoidable.
He is better for 225 than 190A. Seems to respect us/care more about class and material. Course has 2 midterms (10% each) as opposed to 1 (better chance to do well). Also has online quizzes (10%). quizzes were a bit cheap at times in terms of timing, but helped my grade. Labs are fairly easy, just assignments are hard to understand (cont'd)
(cont'd) just ask TA for clarifications. Material more focused than 190A so knowing details is necessary so you expect his tests to be the way they are (still sometimes a lil cheap in how detailed). He even offered up an extra online quiz as a chance to "boost" ur mark (only counted 4 out of 5 quizzes). Overall, 190A=poor, but 225=pretty good.
Dislike. He's definitely my least favourite professor that I've ever had. He comes off as quite condescending towards students, and yet his lectures are like a grown man reading a children's book using big words. Bizarre. His exams test on small details that don't assess your overall knowledge of the course content, just the small details. Avoid.
Very detailed notes. Almost too detailed because there was so much to know.
I recommend going to Creasey's office hours, and drawing out the material. He is an extremely dedicated teacher, and his help brought me to love the course. This teacher offered endless assistance for students throughout the term because he truly wants you to succeed.
Great Professor, fantastic notes puts effort into finding interesting extra materials, for example videos, to show in class.
I really hate seeing all these people saying how hard Creasey is for 190, it really wasn't that bad! Sure there is a lot of stuff to know, but don't blame Creasey for that. I think 190 is meant to be a little hard to weed out people who aren't really interested. Creasey's testing style does a good job of preparing you for 2nd and 3rd year exams.
Useless. Gives you 30-50 pages of 'skeletal' notes per topic, but then underlines random things on the notes as he reads them. Tests you on very little details, and not on concepts. I didn't use the textbook once. He is very condescending and should not be teaching anymore. 3 bio courses with this man. NEVER AGAIN will I take a course with him!
Some things Creasey said or did was hilarious, which made him interesting to listen to. It's a lot easier to catch the extra stuff he says if you print out his notes beforehand. Writing everything out will cause you to miss most of the important stuff he doesn't write down.
I admittedly have 0 interest in Biology, now however I have even less. I can't count the number of times he has said "I'm just going to show you this now and explain it in a later lecture" <--- It's not helping anyone. My advice: avoid this guy, His tests are hard and on random specific details. The class averages are usually low too.(62%)
Well, 400 raters can't be wrong. My only honest advice to those thinking about possibly majoring in Biology or those who are just interested in the subject is to take 150A&B at Camosun and transfer them to UVic. Much much smaller classes and the courses have a lab componenet. If you end up taking them at UVic, well, good luck! You'll need it.
I took Bio 190A, 190B, and 225 with Dr. Creasey. It's true that he tests the small details, but he writes very clear exam questions and once you get used to his testing style, his classes become pretty easy. Easier than many higher-level bio courses.
Save yourself the trouble and take the equivalent course at Camosun, Rosemary Mason is so much better!
Most people are not used to his teaching style. In general lecture notes simplify the textbook material. In Dave's classes it's the other way around. You will use the book (and Wikipedia) to understand his lecture material. If you can get over this concept and if you can handle it, you are guaranteed an A. Not an easy A but an A nonetheless.
In my opinion he is often misunderstood by others. He is passionate about his subject and so he goes into a LOT of detail, but if you are truly passionate about biology more detail wouldn't bother you. Yes, expect to work hard for an A, but it's rewarding in the end. I'm not a biology major but I'd take one of his courses again.
Here is the thing: He gives difficult notes lectures and practice questions, but his final exam is SO EASY compared to all those things he teaches about..So as long as you are on track, you'll do fine in the exam. Many people are probably intimidated by his notes and lectures so they stopped trying, but keep till the end and you'll get an A ;)
Dr. Creasey is very knowledgeable and gives incredibly clear lectures. I had him for 190A, 190B and 225, and he has proven to be the best prof I've had at UVic. People complain about him being too picky with details... get real, its biology, and details are important.
Honestly, don't bother reading the textbook, it doesn't help in any way and I would know since I followed along by reading. If you want to succeed in this class- READ AND LIVE BY HIS NOTES. He is detail-oriented, his exams are difficult, and my God, you better love Biology or it will be hell.
I don't care what anybody says, Creasey is a great professor. I'm not good at biology but his notes were very helpful and clear. Study his notes, and you'll pass the course. His midterm was easy for me, but the exam was hard due to the prof change half way through. I can't wait to have him for 225!
Best lecture notes I've encountered. Extremely helpful outside of class, and a very nice guy. What's with all these bad ratings?! So undeserved.
Dr. Creasey outwardly admits he can't stand students. Only there so uvic can cover his research and makes it clear he doesn't care about much else. Look back at ratings, notice how consistently bad they are. Only reason he got "better" is because he was on probation for making his tests too hard. His ego is huge. Makes sport of ridiculing students
I don't understand the bad rap this guy always gets. This is my third year in a row with Dr. Creasy. Every year I've found him to be helpful and engaging. He seems to really love what he teaches. However, you do need to know your stuff for the exam and read the textbook, but for anyone taking a bio major he's a great prof.
For all those people that rated Creasey low, you are wrong. You were probably sitting up in the back row not listening to anything he said. I found him very insightful and he is extremely interested in biology. He also answers any question that you give him and if he doesn't know then he will find out. Creasey is awesome!!!!!!!!!
He seems like a nice enough guy, but seriously, if you have insomnia, Creasey has the cure.
I think i've spent more time asleep than awake in this class. Creasey speaks about as loud as a mouse in crosstown traffic, and he puts no emphasis on certain testable information.
Everyone take note! The Creasey has evolved! After his bout of probation, his last mideterm was a piece of cake! Yes he may still put you to sleep each class with his monotone voice, but if you can stay awake he covers everything you need to know and in his notes. Sure his notes may be overly thorough, but there is no more need to fear Creasey.
Probation!? Univ doesn't put profs on prob for teaching. And believe me Creasey is far from being a bad prof. Textbook use minimal. Don't buy it. Find a free copy online. 225 will put your study skills to a test. Never miss classes! Review his notes on a regular basis or you'll forget stuff. Course requires more time & effort than 150s and 190s.
He is smart but not a good teacher. He just reads his powerpoints and doesn't really explain things. He moves through material so quickly that it is impossible to keep up with. And the midterm was ridiculous.
Terrible teacher. If you can avoid him, do so at all costs. I am typically an A student, and no matter how much I studied, for hours, days, thinking I knew absolutely everything that could be on a test, the highest test mark I got was a B-. The TA's even said that they couldnt answer half the test. If you do have him, study, study, study
Dr. Creasey's midterm is exceptionally difficult. He tests all the small details. He's your only option though, so good luck! Study along the way.
Great at explaining things, wonderful in class lecturer, writes horrible, annoying tests which focus on extremely specific details.
I don't know what everyone's problem with the midterm was, I thought it was extremely reasonable. So what if he's detail oriented? Biology is about the details! I thought he was extremely clear in lecture and about what would be on the midterm. Can't wait to do more classes with him.
Creasey is a fine professor. Midterm was NOT that hard. If you study it, you're good to go. He can get a little boring in lecture but definitely explains things well and has detailed/helpful notes, I rarely used the text for his half of the class. I'd take another class with him.
Approachable, Good lecturer. However, the amount of information he expects you to know is way too much. He made the 2nd midterm cumulative with the first one and the final cumulative too. Study hard if you want a good mark. Exams are all multiple choice, but not easy at all.
His midterm is detailed - very detailed - but fair. If you showed up and studied well, you'll do okay. His lectures are a little slow, but very clear. I was uncomfortable asking him questions in class; he answers them, but he seems annoyed about it. He definitely knows his stuff, but I don't know if he really likes teaching.
Clearly knows his stuff but doesn't explain it clearly. Lectures are very dry and difficult to keep concentrated on. Exam wasn't too bad though, just read the textbook and do the study questions and you'll be fine.
Very smart guy and makes cell bio as intersting as possible but expects you to know a LOT of material!
I did not enjoy Creasey as a prof when I had him for 190A, so I was naturally dreading having him 225. I was pleasantly surprised! He was very interesting, engaging and I've seen a more passionate professor; his love of cell bio was contagious! Tests are challenging, but not unexpected, he has some of the best notes out there. Great prof!
Creasey in 225 was way better than 190! He truly made the course more interesting and went out of his way to make us interested. I didn't realize he was sick for 190 may have made him more moody. make sure to know the material in and out, creasey's multiple choice will get you.
I liked him. He was good at his lectures and his voice was relaxing to listen to. His notes ARE the course so get a good grasp on them and you will be fine. It is pretty much work and there are a lot of lecture notes, but the topics are rather straight forward. Pay attention in class.
I really disliked him in 190, but 225 was alright. He's not the most inspiring, engaging, or likeable prof ever, but his lectures and notes are fairly straightforward and the exams were tough but fair.
I don't know why Creasey has gotten such a bad rap in the past. Though he wasn't particularly engaging, he was clear in lectures and in outlining his expectations for students. As long as you study his notes very carefully and keep up in the reading, his tests are straightforward and doable.
Great prof, He takes all the guess work out of studying. Extremely detailed course notes that walk you through the material. Required text readings are outlined for you and only help you achieve a stronger grasp of the material. Provides a great class structure that allows you to utilize study time efficiently, Please teach more Upper level classes
People exaggerate how hard the midterms are, they are much easier than i expected. all you need to do if read his notes, he basically types anything you'll need to know, then do the study questions and you'll pass. I would go to class though b/c he likes to draw in many compounds and formulas that are on the exam. Don't listen to all the hate
A good teacher. Very clear in explaining his notes. Reasonable midterms and final. The lab portion was 40% and it sucks for people with horrible lab TA's!!
Funny and a great lecturer but expected too much out of students in an intro course. Asked us to memorize EVERYTHING. His exams contained a lot of irrelevant material. He should not be teaching intro courses, he takes too much stock in little details that won't matter unless someone is majoring in the sciences.
good lecturer. good, clear notes. as long as you attend class and study his notes, the midterm is perfectly doable. focuses on irrelevant detail though; for an intro course, he skipped a lot of general/basic material and dove into extremely specific concepts, which was confusing for a first-year class.he is also pretty intimidating.
Creasey was amazing! He was easy to understand and even after missing many classes, study his notes and you'll ace the exams.
Creasey is tough, a lot of stuff you have to remember. He's a good teacher though, and he doesn't ask you anything unreasonable on his tests. You just have to commit to learning in his class, and know the lecture notes really well.
People can hate all they want, but I love this man. I have had him for Biol 190A/B and 225, and my god is it ever easy to get a great mark in his class. All 3 classes I got A's. Just completely memorize his course pack notes, no need to even buy the textbook. Everyone needs to stop their complaining, this guy knows his stuff and is very passionate!
Excellent prof. Had him for the first half of this summer's BIOL 190A class. Crystal-clear explanations, gave a fair exam, and is an all-around great guy. Super helpful in office hours and his passion for the subject really has a way of rubbing off onto you. Definitely recommended. He's got my full respect as an instructor. Can't wait for BIOL 225!
He is not a very good prof. Don't bother buying the textbooks, print off his notes and copy onto them for class. Bad teacher, but this class is easy to cram for and forget!
He was a pretty good teacher and helps if you go in to talk about him. A lot of people didn't like him because the topic was boring and he goes through it pretty lecture style-esque. BUT he tries to make it more interesting and jokes around a bit. He really hates people who talk in class. Overall I liked him!
By far the most caring prof you'll encounter. Asked for some generic help and was sent away with a handful of mind-mapping materials such as pencils erasers and paper. Sometimes the lectures can seem over your head but if you make the effort to have some dialogue with him when you get stuck, you can't help but do well.
If you wanna do good in his class just know his notes and the little details. He likes to test on peoples names and some dates and sizes. He is a good prof in that all you have to do is study his notes. He has the best notes because all the info is there you don't have to go searching for info. He is helpful if you go and see him and ask questions
Either you love him or you really don't. I don't. I found when students asked questions he was rather condescending. Talks a bit to quiet and wasn't very thorough. Went off on tangents, slowed the class down a bit. All in all, not my fave prof in any way
Tests are very hard and he is very boring to listen to during lecture. He went through two whole chapters in two classes and expected us to know them for the midterm in that same week. I wish there was another first year bio prof because this one is not recommeneded
This prof is the most amazing prof I have ever had. In bio 190A he wasn't the most interesting, but in 225 he is incredible. I didn't have high hopes for cell bio but it turned out to be my favourite course. Dr. Creasey is super interesting and fills the classes with neat real life examples. I never look at the clock in his class.
By far the most amazing prof I have ever had at uvic. In 190A he wasn't the most interesting, but in 225 he is incredible. He fills the classes with real life example that make you want to come back. I never look at the clock in his class. its easy to do well in his class if you put in a bit of time. He is a credit to UVic.
Boring Lectures. Crazy hard and unfair midterms. Went in for help and made me feel stupid and asked why I didnt read the textbook. Not a very niceguy overall. His lectures were alright, but he expects you to know wayyy more than he teaches.
The notes that he provided through Moodle were very confusing. Very cluttered and not well organized. Spent a lot of time on small details that weren't even tested. Tests were hard and he relied heavily on students learning from the textbook. Study questions he provided were often irrelevant.
Pretty awful lectures, he was super boring and very monotone. I found it easy to drift off during class and I rarely was able to follow his notes. The midterm was ridiculously hard. He ruined biology for me.
This prof gave us all the notes prior to class, so that we could print them out and take more notes on them. This was great but there was WAY TOO MUCH INFORMATION!!! Also, about 45% of the class got lower than 60% on the midterm. He was boring (unfortunately) and asked SUPER specific questions on the mid term :(
Some of the notes were just a clutter of information and abbreviations were constantly used which were confusing and hard to remember but the "Dave-Diagrams" he came up with to help remember things were super helpful. It would have been better if there wasn't as much "self-study" items.
His course is definitely not the most interesting but he really is a good professor. He knows his stuff well and is very helpful if you go to see him. While his tests are tough, they are very fair and you will never see a question that was not in his notes.
He knows his stuff very well, and he tests like you do too. His notes are filled with abbreviations, over-annotated diagrams, and way too much information. You can get a good mark if you devote a lot of time into his course, but most are taking 4 other courses (plus labs), and this is not feasible. Prepare yourself for an EXTREMELY hard final.
He knows his stuff inside out, the guy is really smart..straightforward notes and tests are straight from the notes. The tests are very detailed though, you must have the proper time to study in order to get an A+
Learning how to study for his tests is a struggle, but it is really important to focus on the details. He puts way too much information in his notes, and almost exclusively asks smalls details on tests. The only way to do well in his class is to memorize absolutely everything, and don't underestimate the cumulative final.
Extremely nice guy. Through all his health issues, (once apologized to me for having to eat during office hours because he had just returned from chemo), he is very helpful. Yes, his tests are hard, but they are exactly based on his notes. If you study well, you can do well! Thanks Dr. Creasey!
Pretty good prof, but you have to expect to know a lot of information. The final was pretty hard
Creasey doesn't get the credit he deserves. I previously took 190, didn't study enough for his tests, and then blamed my frustrations on him. Now in 225 I understand how amazing his notes are and how good of a prof he is. TAKE THE TIME TO STUDY and you will learn a lot. He has gained my respect slowly but more than any other prof at UVic
He's a nice guy one on one, but isn't very sympathetic to those who don't prioritize his class. Exams are straight-forward as long as u pay close attention to his notes.
The class was very straightforward, and can be very helpful if you go to his office hours. Sometimes, the class gets a little boring, especially when Creasey goes off on a tangent.
Creasey is a great instructor. You can tell he loves what he's teaching. Don't be too intimidated by what people say about him, he gives very nice detailed notes and if you study them the tests are easy to get a good mark in. The Lab section is a little hard though.
Creasey is very smart and passionate about what he teaches, however this class was information overload. For someone who is a very good student I had a lot of trouble understanding his lectures and his tests are EXTREMELY detailed - make sure you know every. little.thing. or else theres almost no hope.
For a first year course creasy expects that you already know the information before he lectures you, he would be a very good proffessor for a topic that you have already learned as he likes to test on all the little details and skips over the basic concepts in class. Creasy isn't a bad teacher, but biology 190A isn't a course he teaches well.
Creasey needs time to warm up to. In 2nd year I've learnt that his course requires a lot of studying to succeed. But, if you memorize everything from his notes, his tests will be straight forward and you will have a wealth of knowledge with you. Its true though, his notes abbreviate too much and he does give a LOT of information, a bit too much.
Creasey is one of the worst professors I have ever had. During a visit to his office, he answered his phone at least 5 times, and abruptly called the meeting over before I had even seen my midterm. He talks down to you. His classes need TAs, there is too much information and hundreds of students. Avoid taking his classes if you can!
Creasey is seriously so nice, wishes all his students well, and knows his stuff inside and out. However, his classes are dry and his tests are painfully detailed. Study hard (ie memorize his notes)and you should be fine.
Creasey is a great prof in my opinion. He is very smart and his tests are tough but fair. I never found a test question that wasn't in his notes. Spend your time studying the material from day one and you will do fine. Delay to the end and you are screwed.
Creasy is a really nice guy but his lectures are dull. Towards the end of the semester I stopped attending his classes and just did detailed notes of my own and ended up improving my own grade that way. If you are good with Bio it shouldn't be too hard with him, if you aren't into Bio then good luck because you will want to cry from boredom.
so passionate and knowledgeable about his material. very nice and kind. can rush through, but will gladly stop to clarify if asked. class taken in summer and so quite dense and fast paced, but prof helped make 8:30 AM classes in the summer worth it. attendance is absolutely necessary. provides useful notes too.
I guarantee that 95% of these poor ratings are from students who didn't study enough, did poorly, and are blaming him for their failures. Creasey is an awesome prof. His notes are easy to understand, his explanations are very clear, and his tests are straight out of the notes so they're easy to study for. He is REALLY helpful in office hours, too.
Awesome prof and mentor if you are interested in biology/biochemistry. He will test directly from in his lecture notes (especially the questions he puts in them that are unanswered). If you show interest in his material when you visit him in his office he will provide excellent guidance. Yes he can be meticulous, but such is science.
Creasey is a great prof and a wonderful human being. Even with his many health problems, he sets plenty of time aside to help students. Tests are hard but based exactly on his notes, so it is very possible to do well. Knows his stuff!
Dr Creasey is a fantastic person who knows his stuff and communicates it well. Tests are quite tough but note packages are given out and he clearly emphasizes the especially important (ie. testable) material.
He will reintroduce certain subtopics throughout the course and cover other parts only once so you must study to do well. This course had lots of material so don't cram for tests He puts in lots of time to help his students during office hours. He is a serious person and passionate about cell biology, but he is not condescending.
He genuinely cares about conveying the course content to students so they can understand. One of my favourite bio profs.
he is a good lecturer but the examinations he writes are all about little bits of knowledge buried deep in his notes making it difficult to know what to study.
nothing he teaches shows up on your midterm its better to learn from the textbook than go to his class his notes make no sense
Dr Creasey is a wonderful person and a great prof. He really cares about getting the info across to his students. He is a busy person so make appointments with time to spare if you need to, but once you have an appointment with him he will do his best to help you out.
What a great prof! People will say his tests consist of random small facts (I used to say that) but if you just study his tests are fair and have good questions.
biology 190A isn't a course he teaches well.
Creasy clearly knows his subject very well and is enthusiastic about teaching it but writes impractical tests. His tests will focus on insignificant details rather than the main topics covered. It is more about memorization than learning, but he is a nice guy who knows his stuff.
From the previous comments, I should've known that his tests are super specific. However, I believe it's time I too give him the rating he deserves.
There is no interaction in his class at all. All he does is talk, and with a very low voice that could hardly be heard. Though I could not decipher his speech, I could understand his notes which are written in a clear and coherent manner. As long as the notes are studied and are well understood, any students should be able to do well in his tests.
Dr. Creasey is the best. He even scaled our tests up 4.4% each!
People who complain just don't study. Guy gives interesting lectures, and if you like the topic, you should like his lecture. He is sick alot, but still works hard to make sure his students are learning.
He just annoyed the hell out of me. Went off on tangents that didn't help.
I couldnt stand Creasy for Bio 190A and I blamed by poor grades on him, now hes one of my fave profs. You just really need to go to class and pay attention, its more memorization then learning but doing well in this class isnt hard if you go and listen and write down EVERYTHING! you cant get around him so learn to love him!
Not as detail oriented as everyone says. Midterm questions were straight forward and directly from his notes. MEMORIZE THEM. Notes are good, however not the best prof. I could barely hear him from the middle rows, and he focuses way too long on minor definitions and details that will never be mentioned again on tests.
He's fine as a professor, kind of boring and dry though. The midterms and final questions are purely memorization, which is a poor way to evaluate someones knowledge. Review your notes often and memorize as much as you can and you'll be okay.
As a 4th taking this 1st year course I can tell you this man uses unnecessary lingo to make things more difficult, especially in exams. Watch carefully and you may be able to trip him up in his own trap. Careful though - he does NOT like being corrected.
First off - yes, Creasey has a reputation as being difficult, and this reputation is well-deserved. His tests are detail oriented and challenging. But WOW. This guy KNOWS HIS STUFF. Motivates you to LEARN. Completely changed my perspective on Molec. Bi, best class. Best Prof. Going to try and get him nominated for a Teaching Excellence Award!!
He gave so many notes which made it really difficult to study.
Absolutely excellent prof. The only reason his ratings are low is because people right out of highschool take his course, dont study and fail.
Very detailed notes provided that leave no question as to what will be testable. Expect to be tested on even some small details, but test are weighted in favor of main topics. Don't bother asking him questions during lecture as he will belittle you regardless if your question is valid or not. Sounds like he is helpful during office hours though.
Very detailed notes but an average prof. Very helpful in office hours but dont bother asking questions during lectures. Exam questions arent all covered in the notes so be sure to use the text book.
His notes are amazing, sometimes even too detailed. Sometimes notes are slightly unclear (clarifies in lectures). His speech isn't the greatest though.
Easy on the eyes. And an interesting man.
Honestly, one of the best profs at Uvic; but he teaches 1st year so people don't realize that yet. He gives every thing you need to know on a silver platter; no need for the text or other sources. His exams are super easy if you just learn what he tells you to, and nothing is unpredictable.
I honestly don't know why Creasey has such a low rating. I'd say I'm a pretty typical student and I thought he was great! Super passionate and excited about the material which keeps things interesting. Yes, he tests on details, but he will never ask a question that isn't answered in his notes. His tests are extremely fair!
Creasey only taught 2/3 of the course due to medical reasons but I thought he was a good prof. He knew the material very well and did a great job of explaining the concepts. His midterms were very fair and he did not try to trick you. This is not a difficult class so if you go to lecture and go over the material you can expect a good grade.
The most helpful prof i've had. Only pay close attention to his notes not the text. Goes over his slides very thoroughly.. hard to do badly in this class. I would advise going to class and not reading the assigned reading unless you need more clarification
Dr. Creasey is amazing! He is passionate about the stuff he teaches and it definitely shows.
His notes are very clear and indicate exactly what you need to know. The class itself is quite tedious and the lecture material may be dry but if you put in the effort to memorize the material you will do well. As in most first year science courses it is all memorization.
Avoid if possible. Rambles about irrelevant mundane topics and doesn't teach half of what he tests you on.
Don't buy the book. Creasy goes through great length to make you think it's worth it, it's not, all you need is good in-class notes. He can have a pompous condescending attitude, but don't let that frustrate you. Pay attention in class and ask for clarification at office hours if needed. You will do just fine. Good luck !
After my cell biology credit failed to transfer, I ended up having to take it again. Thought I would sleep through it - not with Creasey! Creasey is probably the best instructor I have ever had. He is fundamentally passionate about both teaching and biology - if he comes off as strict, it is because he has very high standards. Would take again.
I had Creasey for 190A and 225. He was a lot better in 225 in my opinion. He's really passionate about the material and the tests are very fair if you attend lectures and take good notes. The textbook is next to useless since tests focus on his notes which I found very clear. I will definitely take another class with Creasey given the opportunity.
I don't know why Dr. Creasey has such a low rating, because he is an amazing professor. Yes, his tests are quite tough and are detail-oriented, but he tells you exactly what you need to be studying (and tough tests should be expected for a university biology course). The lectures were great and he is such a kind and helpful man.
Dr. Creasey is approachable, kind, and understanding. He respects the students and makes the material relevant. His notes clearly outline the concepts that he wants students to know and he gives lots of hints about the exams. Actively engage in class, study the notes, use the textbook if you want to know more, and you should get at least an A-.
Creasey is disorganized and will only cover half of the syllabus. His notes are very detailed and you must know the material to that level of detail to do well on the tests. I found his lectures extremely boring. Would not take another class with him. With that said, he is straightforward, has fair tests, and is obviously passionate about biology.
Creasey is a great prof, just make sure you are willing to put in the necessary effort. Exams, like many biology courses, require thorough knowledge of the material.
Creasey is one of the most caring profs you will ever get. His tests are SO detail oriented, but once you know what he wants on a test, you can get A+ no problem. Memorizeunderstand all the notes he gives you, and pay particular attention to the stuff he writes down. TEXTBOOK IS USELESS. DONT BUY IT.
I really enjoyed Professor Creasey's lectures! I found him endearing and super caring for his students. He has a really bad rep for going into too much detail and making tough exams, but once you get used to his style of testing, it's easy to predict what you should focus on. Make sure to write down all his detailed lecture notes!
Great prof.
If you actively try to understand his notes, you will get an A+. It can be helpful to study with somebody else so you can determine exactly what he means since some of his sentences and shorthand can be a bit confusing. You can tell he just wants everyone to know everything he knows about biology.
Really fair teacher, he lays out what is expected and really goes over the material. its hard to get an A without putting in some effort but I barely studied and got a B+. Really nice guy when you go to talk to him.
not a fan of this professor. he isn't friendly and does not accept questions in class. his tests are extremely detailed-oriented and not accessible for individuals not fluid in science. all of my science major friends are unhappy with him. would avoid.
My favourite professor of all time
he gives out study guides, if you do them, you will do well on the exams. Lots of office hours that you can go to, and he welcomes students not during these times as well. You also don't need to buy the textbook, save your money, he tests based off of his notes.
He's a really nice professor and is always available to offer help. However, his lectures can be kind of confusing and his diagrams don't make much sense most of the time. The only things that count towards your grade are the two midterms and the final. Pay close attention to all the little details, do the study questions provide & you'll be fine.
Creasey did a lot of work with his notes and study questions to help us succeed in this class. Although the diagrams he did in lecture were sometimes confusing with a lot of info to retain, he was a good prof
Intimidating as hell. Go to his office hours if you have any questions because Lord knows he never answer any one of my 15 emails...
Dr. Creasey was very disorganized. He provided a syllabus that lacked any structure pertaining to allotted class time per subject. The two midterms consisted one 1-2 topics each. In the last 3 weeks of class we covered 6 topics which made the course extremely easy for the first 23 and extremely heavy for the last 13. Great skeletal notes.
Great professor. You will never find a midterm or exam question for which the answer can't be found written explicitly in the lecture notes.
Honestly I really liked David as a teacher, very respectful, knew what he was talking about, always on point. I don't know why he's so low
I took this class as a pre requisite for my program. He is a good teacher. But, I think he should be teaching biochemistry instead of just biology. Gives unnecessary information- out of the course. His diagrams are confusing.
Dr. Creasey is hard to work with and spacey. He lost several final exams at the end of term., taking more than two months, with even the BIO department having a hard time reaching him, before he finally found the exams to get graded for students. Stressful to say the least. I would go out of my way to avoid taking a class with him if possible.
Is unclear in all aspects of the course, and rarely clarifies for any students who are having trouble. Would definitely not take his course, however biology 190 A and B are required for your biology undergrad. Overall a poor professor.
I would nominate Dr. Creasy for a Harry Hickman Teaching Award. This guy expects nothing less than excellence - and he will demand it of you. But, with time and effort, you and truly excel. I started off with a minimal interest in cell biology, and left with a passion for it.
A lot of people don't like Creasey, but be cautious about the lower rating on here because a lot of students also love him. I found his class challenging, but also very easy to study for. He gives excellent notes, and everything you need to know for the class is in them. Sometimes he's more specific than is ideal, but otherwise very fair.
Yes, he's tough. Yes, you must attend lecture. Yes, you will work hard for your grade. You will be thanking yourself when you've made it to med school and you can still recognize and characterize bullous pemphigoid from Dr. Creasey's lectures, and you know the cell inside and out. His lessons stick, and they prepare you for down the line.
David Creasy seems like a genuinely nice guy, and he's a great lecturer. His course structure leaves something to be desired (peer-graded essay questions and missing information/typos in exams are frequent frustrations), but you WILL learn quite a bit. Just don't expect to come out with a perfect grade.
Amazing professor.
David seems like a really nice guy but I did not like his teaching style. Way too note heavy and seemed to emphasize weird things.
