Prof Crombecque is extremely helpful. His lectures are clear and straightforward. If you work in hard you will surly see results. He holds plenty of office hours so there's no excuse for not getting help. The material gets complicated but he makes is understandable for those who are not math happy. I recommend this professor to anyone.
Easy A. Never went to class. Cool guy though, not your typical nerdy math guy. Would highly recommend him.
He's hands down the best math professor I've had at 'SC so far. He makes sure he can help whenever there are questions and makes difficult concepts seem easy. Take his class!
he's awesome. Makes ard concepts easy. teaches well. recomended.
Even though attendance is not mandatory, he's a super hot french professor so I mean why not go to class. He's very easy to understand, presents the material well, and answers questions nicely. He has an insane amount of office hours each week that are usually pretty helpful.
Best math teacher ever! Concise and clear lectures. Fair tests. Tons of office hours.
LOVE HIM! so helpful
Awesome Professor. He is the best teacher for calculus. Attendance to the lectures are optional if you have already taken calculus before. He often has quizzes in discussion though. His tests are very similar to the problems for homework. Be ready for the mid-drift (you'll understand when you take the class).
Professor Crombecque is a very nice man and a decent professor, but there are a few fatal flaws with this math course. He assigns around 25-30 problems of homework a week that are graded very harshly and therefore he loses the fun side math of. I do understand the material well and like the course, but would use a different teacher if done again.
He's the best math professor in usc. Take him.
Like him! He is the best prof in math department and at USC I've ever had. He cares a lot about students and math. I would take him for all my math classes. He has a lot of homework, but they are very helpful for the midterms. He is very nice person. Take him if you really want to understand the class and also to get a good grade!
Prof Crombecque is one of the best professors I've had - his explanations of concepts are excellent, and while he gives a lot of homework, they really prepare you for midterms/final. His classes are actually a lot of fun, he's a really chill guy, and he's an extremely attractive young French guy, but his accent is pretty easy to understand.
Best math teacher I have had at USC. His lectures are funny and informative. He cares about his students. Is SUPER helpful at office hours. Has a lot of office hours. Tests can be challenging but are definitely fair. Overall he is a great teacher.
Great professor. He explains concepts very well and also holds office hours most days of the week. The exams are similar to the homework that is assigned. I felt he prepared us well for the final exam and even held a study session for us to review concepts we found difficult. My favorite professor at USC.
Best Math Professor I've had thus far at USC. Take him, please, if you truly care about learning the proper way and if you also want a teacher who shows his appreciation for math every single lecture.
His HW assignments are really WAY too long. I'm talking 4 hours + sometimes every week. This really screws with your other classes and time management. He just asssigns as many problems as he can every damn week. Really frustrating. He's a good teacher with fair tests though and prepares you well.
HES AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE textbook: need for homework. just get the pdf. quiz every week.
Very clear professor, went over the materials very in depth. I personally really liked him, and thought he was a good, nice teacher. Easy quiz every week, hw due every Friday, and two test + final. Also plenty of space to earn extra credit. Expecting to get an A in the class.
Decent professor, but watch out for the 3-4 hours of weekly homework. Also has a pretty grating habit of using the phrase 'That alright?' every five minutes. Grading is less than optimal, given that it's just solutions on paper. Also, you're on your own outside class.
Great teacher but lots of work. If you do the hw and go to class, you should do well on the weekly quizzes and exams. Hw is one (roughly 5 hour-long) assignment per week. Keeps his lectures interesting and can really teach a lot in 50 min. Highly recommend and would definitely take any class with him again. Nice French accent too.
Lots of homework, but it's doable and it prepares you more than the other profs for the final
He is the BEST math professor I've ever taken, so much so that I've had him for two semesters (I had him for MATH 126, too). He has an adorable French accent, but it's not heavy. He explains things very clearly & has SO many office hours, you have no excuse not to go. He truly cares about students & math, & patiently explains problems. TAKE HIM!
Hi David, Just stopping by to leave you some good ratings. Hope you win Faculty Student Mentor Award for all your efforts and dedication to teaching. There should be an award section on this. So you can show off, Ha! For those students shopping around, STOP! You found him. Now schedule ASAP! Spots run out quick, FYI.
He takes so much time to explain each concept that it's almost annoying. If you pay attention, there's no way you'll do badly on his exam. Only negative: the homework graders are insanely harsh, but weekly quizzes are straight forward, not a hard class.
Can't go wrong with Crombecque. 4+ hr of homework/week, but it prepares you very well for the tests so it's worth it. Not that hard to get a good grade if you want to.
If you haven't noticed, a ton of the math teachers at USC are pretty bad. Crombecque is probably one of the best ones for many reasons: He explains things very thoroughly and is patient with his students. That being said, he assigns crazy amounts of homework and only grades a couple of the problems. Tests are reasonable if you do example problems.
One of the best math professors in the entire department. He clearly enjoys the subject and does a great job at explaining things thoroughly (sometimes even too slowly) so that everyone understands. Go to SI for more help though because it really does help you get an A. If you put in the effort to study and really understand, it is very possible.
homework is arguably the hardest part of the course, but just check your answers with slader before you turn it in and you shouldn't have a problem. he teaches concepts very well and the lectures are a good balance between theory and examples. would highly recommend for calculus 3. his french accent and outfits are the best
Prof. Crombecque is an amazing professor. He gives great lectures and explains difficult concepts really well. He really wants his students to succeed in his class and beyond. If you take him, just expect to spend 3+ hours on homework every week.
I learned a lot in this class, but the curve is brutal. If you are a Viterbi major, take this your last semester here so you don't destroy your GPA. Crombecque was great, but I did not think he would be such a harsh grader. Berkeley's Linear Algebra class was curved more generously.
Tough Grader. TONS of homework.
Avoid
Great lectures. Able to make up very fitting problems on the spot, which shows his deep understanding. Amazing and clear drawings that help with visualization, which is very important when it's 3D calculus. Uses body language to make students understand better. Accessible outside of class. Open to questions, and very funny at times.
This course is advertised as an easy math class with very little actual math but beware that there is a lot of math and literal hours of homework. Office hours are crowded and lectures are often unclear.
Honestly I don't think he was that great of a professor. Yeah he explained things fairly well, but he assigned way too much homework that was only a small fraction of your grade. I did all the homework assignments, and still did poorly on his exams. His lectures were good but he moves very fast and its sometimes hard to keep up
Calc 3 is fairly tough material, but he makes it make sense! I found attending lecture very helpful, though I know people who did fine just reading the textbook and staying home. Tests aren't too hard but they're LONG and you have go quick or you'll run out of time. Weekly homework and quizzes (short, in discussion).
Crombecque is very good at explaining concepts in class, relating them to past concepts. Very accessible - more than twice the normal office hours of other professors. He does assign a lot of homework, but it is all relevant and the same problem types show up on exams. Weekly hw and quiz, 2 midterms and a final.
Crombecque is a great teacher, but a person hard to communicate with. AND be prepared with TONS of HW. I barely slept on Thursday nights this semester. I wish he was nicer as a person so I would be more encouraged to ask him questions when I am confused.
Fun guy, great sense of style and has his own sassiness that keeps you awake. TONS of homework though, literally twice as much as there needed to be. I bombed the first midterm and still scraped by, but it was really rough.
Great learning experience! Loved David. Best Professor at SC.
Outstanding. Best math teacher Ive ever had. So much homework, if you are like 95% of people thursday nights will suck the semester you are in his class. It is so worth it though. Tests require mastery of the material and pretty decent speed (nothing too crazy though). Hes a little hard to approach one-on-one but dont take it personally.
Crombecque is a very good teacher, however approaching him one on one in office can be intimidating at first, but don't be discouraged. Also, the last chapter is packed into 2 weeks, and is roughly 60% of the final, so don't slack of towards the end or you will spend a lot of time trying to understand key concepts in chapter 13.
Take if you wanna do math HW all week nonstop, or get ready to not sleep on Thursday nights...
Professor Crombecque is an extremely kind professor, and actually cares for his students. He is always available to meet as well. The best part about him though is his ability to teach important concepts. Professor Crombecque goes beyond formulas, and teaches how things come about in Calc 3.
Crombecque is a great lecturer but he has nothing else you might look for in a professor: helpful office hours, reasonable workload, approachability. He's always at least 30min late to office hours, incredibly condescending, AND he often provides copious amounts of work and teaches the needed material two days before the deadline.
Lots of homework and no curve even on final.
The most important thing is that Prof. Crombecque really cares about math, and wants you to care too. Be ready for 6 hrs of hw a week
1st C+ in math ever because he doesnt curve even if the average on the final is an F. That is the letter grade the professor deserves (an F).
Great teacher, but hw load is insane and he barely curves, if at all
He is very funny. The way he explains some abstract concepts are quite inspirational. But he really needs more planning. He is always 5-10 minutes late for the morning lectures. Examples are improvised which then lead to messy computation. This semester, the last and most important chapter was barely mentioned because he ran out of time.
Lots of homework, but it pays off if you do it. Professor Crombecque is extremely caring and accessible. His knowledge of the topic and methods of teaching are great. (Plus he'll make class funny). Very hard, but you'll learn. Highly recommend only if it's a required course for your major.
Objectively speaking, he explains the materials pretty clearly. His tests are fair and he is accessible outside of class. He even gave me advice on my course selection. His homework is quite easy (mostly computations). HOWEVER, he often gives crazy problems that are no brainers, but you need to calculate for hours just to get a stupid answer.
He is definitely the best instructor I had so far in this school, especially for maths and sciences. He teaches the subject very well and makes sure everybody understands it. Gives weekly, heavy homework, but it is not so bad. Overall, do not take anybody else if this guy is giving the class.
Funny guy and teaches well, just a little too fast sometimes. Has flexible office hours, gives us a week to do each homework packet.
Dosent curve, TOO MUCH homework
I actually dropped his class because I was so confused. I went to his office hours and was very condescending.
I know I failed, but I genuinely had no complaints about his class. The weekly homework assignments WILL take about 6 hours, so don't think you can put them off. My one complaint is that he would often give test reviews and not provide answers until the night before the test, but honestly, if you just DO the homework you should at least PASS.
Very good Linear Algebra class with Prof. Crombecque, there was an insistence on going over proofs which is important for developing mathematical maturity, something not otherwise covered at USC during the calculus sequence. Tests are limited on time so be prepared. Homework is also graded on correctness so don't slack off.
Professor Crombecque is one of THE MOST thoughtful and caring professors at USC. His classes are difficult, but if you do the work (I didn't, oops) you should pass easily. He is very direct with his expectations and is always available to help you. Also, the coolest accent on campus.
His lectures are solid, I won't lie. However, the in-class examples are not good prep. The only way you will do well in this class is to work for it a lot, on your own. Prof. Crombecque does hold lots of office hours, however, I hate going to them. This prof. is by far the rudest, most condescending teacher I've ever dealt. Avoid if possible.
Great Prof! The contents are taught clearly, and he is always accessible outside of class. Believe me, pay efforts and you will get A.
This was the hardest class I've taken at USC, granted it was the linear alg class recommended for engineers. I dropped before the final because I had a D. I spent all my time studying for the class but 50 mins for a long-answer 9 question test is super hard. Not for me and wouldn't recommend it due to how competitive the students who take it are.
Professor Crombecque was amazing in MATH225. The homework is a lot and the tests have quite a few questions for 50 minutes, but as long as you prepare well and do the problems he provides, it should not be too difficult. Very sarcastic attitude with a French accent as a plus.
This was way easier for me than 226. I was averaging 30 points above the curve on each test without studying or prior experience. Crombecque gives you all the tools you need to succeed, and if you take the time to truly understand everything (he doesn't spoonfeed), you'll do well above average.
Crombecque is a good lecturer when he wants to be, but that isn't most of the time. My biggest complaint is when you try to go to him outside of class with questions and concerns, he is condescending and unhelpful. He makes you feel dumb, and is just rude. I wouldn't take him again. He gives study guides for exams, but won't upload soln's til late.
During the lectures he talks and writes nonstop so there is no time for questions. Additionally, his French accent makes things hard to understand. Lastly, he does not go over that many examples in class, so the TA primarily does that, but there is no communication between the TA and the professor, so often the TA does not know what we did in class
Crombecque is the worst professor I've ever had at USC. He's condescending when people ask questions, gives excessive amounts of homework, and makes tests unreasonably long. His exams test how fast you can do computations rather than your understanding of the material, and he was not very accommodating when our semester was moved online.
Hes great at explaining things, and office hours are very helpful. Covid hit in the middle of the class and he was accommodating for all of his students. Lots of hw, he doesnt grade all of it, and he doesnt tell you which questions are graded and which arent so dont get hung up on one problem. I wouldve done so much worse if I hadnt had him
Crombecque was a terrible professor. I would not take him again. He is rude to students and does not teach the material very well. His exams are unreasonably long, and the homework feels like busy work. He might better than all the other linear profs, but that doesn't mean he's any good.
He is a great guy. Lots of office hours available and he really cares about student. He is NOT condescending at all. Accent is cool. However his tests can be really long (but not very difficult). Go to the lectures and work hard and you will be fine.
Terrible accent/ too much homework/ too much questions in test/mean/bad grades on test totally depends on self-study
The course itself is really interesting and prepares you well for 425a. You go through mathematical logic and things like proof by contradiction/induction. I thought Dr. Crombecque was a solid professor, but fair warning: this dude straight up told everyone that he wants the average grade for the whole course to be a C+/B- (e.g. 2.5 GPA avg). Sus
It's not even that hard, but as someone already mentioned on here, he grades insanely harshly. Like nothing I've ever seen before. It's pretty criminal if you ask me. If you want to learn the material (which you should) I'd go buy Hammock's Book of Proof and go through it on your own. You'll learn the material without killing your GPA, a win-win.
The class wasn't hard. The material wasn't hard. The professor made linear algebra hard for no reason. His tests are unreasonably long, his grading is just absurd (if you make small calculation mistakes here and there, your grade will suffer a lot). He is often late to his own class, and he extends the lecture to 10 min after. Really frustrating.
Crombeque almost killed my love for math. His tests are completely unreasonable. The problems aren't difficult, the issue is with an absurd amount of problems. This ended up making it impossible to do well in the course unless you've been in a high ranking math team. Also never talks about grading scale, so it's impossible to judge where you are.
WORST PROFESSOR. His test were incredibly long so u cant ever finish. If you make one minor algebra mistake youre completely screwed. Hes also a very rude person. He answers questions with a lot of attitude and is very sarcastic. Also he wont tell us anything about the grading scale so we have no idea what grade we will get. Do not take him.
499 was my favorite class this semester! Professor Crombecque is great at lecturing and is super funny. It's a small class, so you get to know your classmates--I felt comfortable sharing how I did proofs, even when I got them wrong. I feel ready for 425A after this. Tests are long and you'll definitely feel short on time.
I've tried all MATH225 professors during the first week, Crombecque is truly the best lecturer among them. However, he gives REALLY LONG exams and grades them pretty toughly. You have to understand the material VERY WELL to get a decent grade. It's challenging and it takes a huge amount of time before exams but not impossible to do well.
This class was one of the most difficult math classes I have ever taken. I studied very hard and would still always run out of time on his exams. On top of that, there was no grace period to upload your exam file so you had to leave time for that. Lectures were confusing and not legible. The only thing that saved me in this class was my TA.
I wouldn't recommend taking him for MATH225. Not because he is a bad professor, his lectures are actually pretty good. It's just that his exams are sooooo long. Around 5 questions in an hour, each questions with 3-5 subparts. He purposefully does that for Zoom so ppl don't cheat, he's probably better in person.
Prof. Crombecque is just a solid choice for linear algebra. His lectures are good and crystal clear. But tests are somewhat hard and long. My friends told me it's probably easier to get a good grade with other profs. But you really learn from Crombecque and he just provides great intuitions. He is a little bit rude though. TA is your friend!
He often belittles students who either don't get the right answer or don't meet his standards. He goes through the material and focuses more on the proofs for theorems, but his attitude is hard to deal with. On the bright side, the tests are like the homework, but there's a time crunch for it. I'd avoid taking him if you have the option
Professor Crombecque does a decent job explaining concepts and he goes at a decent pace in class. Homework is managable, and tests aren't conceptually difficult but are a time crunch. What really irks me about him is his condescending nature whenever a student dares to ask a question. It makes him very inapproachable.
Crombecque is a very memorable lecturer in terms of his accent and attitude. I find his jokes hilarious. Stay awake during lectures, do every homework and practice problem, and you should be fine! Exams are long but not difficult, mostly calculations and manipulations. Crombecque emphasizes doing questions efficiently
This class is Intro to Proofs/Logic and I think its going to be renamed next semester. he is a great teacher and his lectures are honestly the best Ive ever had in usc math department. The material is straightforward and he teaches every part of it whether it be basic or advanced. However, warning: he takes FOREVER to grade. & very long exams
funny, but likes teasing students. some people take it the wrong way, but you can tell that he means well. i never actually studied besides doing the required homework problems and still got an A. one of the easier math classes, would recommend.
Crombecque is a gem 5/5 Pros: -Cares about students (very rare in Math department) -Super available at office hours (has them 4 times a week) -Engaging, entertaining lecturer. Kept me focused and curious -Manageable workload/assignments Cons: -Will roast you if your question is dumb (lmao) -Tests are a time crunch--avoid if you don't work fast
What a disaster. Tests are just about how well you can speedrun a problem set. Holds tons of office hours, which he uses as opportunities to berate students 1-on-1. Feels the need to frequently remind us that he has a Ph.D. and has better things to do than answer students' questions. Final exam is 35% of grade. Test avgs as low as 67, no curve.
M126 w/ Crombecque was certainly hard, but the professor's lectures definitely help to explain hard concepts better than the textbook. Longer assignments are given weekly with a bunch of small, pretty-easy quizzes to boost your grade a bit. Though the lectures are great, exams are still a large time crunch. Also don't ask dumb questions.
A decent choice for a MATH-126 course. Grade depends mostly on midterms and finals (20%, 15%, and 35%) but there are no "trick questions" and it's clear what you need to do + HWs and grades cushion you (he drops couple worst quizzes/hw). Doesn't really show a lot of leniency if it seems like you didn't try. Lots of HW--try to form a study group!
Made the class online in an in-person semester. No grading scale throughout the class. No curve at the end. Hard 93 for an A. Test account for 70% of the grade. Lots of HW. Decent lecturer. Ill say the tough grade is not entirely his fault though, it is the nature of this class. However some other professors are definitely easier.
Still dont know the grading criteria, very unapproachable, very long exams. Avoid.
Doesnt teach well or knows how to create an atmosphere of a classroom. Dont participate he will destroy your souland self esteem.
Gives super long exams and will shame you for not knowing certain things. I know he is probably joking when he does this, but it still stings. I would rather relive my life's most embarrassing moments in sequential order than take another class with him.
Math 290 was the class, which was previously 499, over summer 2022. The most essential lower division math course to take at USC for 410,425ab,440,471 which are all much more approachable now. The abstraction / proof reading/writing for those classes is taught well. Do the readings and this is a class you can/should know everything making an easy A
You should take his class if you are really into Math. His lectures outweigh all his drawbacks. He uses his own notes and proofs to explain difficult concepts clearly. After his class, I'm really interested in Math now! He is also very accessible outside the class during office hours. However, if you want a good grade be prepared for his exams.
The lectures were too theoretical, did not prepare you for the exams. The exams were way too long for the time given and the homeworks also do not prepare you well.
Talking about lecture this Professor might be endurable but grade wise please avoid. The final exam is hard and nothing like the review questions given to us. Usually an A student but I probably have to retake this class since I bombed the final. I would recommend choosing other professor for 225.
Exams are more a test of how fast you can race through the problems rather than how well you know the actual material. Homework and exams are usually not graded in a timely manner. Although Crombecque makes himself available outside of class, he is very condescending towards students, which makes him unapproachable. Avoid him if possible!
Do not take his class if you are an average or bad test taker because he assigns WAY too many questions for the 45-minute time slot we get. When asked about how to do better on exams, he generally just says "Just be faster". Nonetheless, great lecturer, and although I have to retake 225, taking his lectures prepared me knowledge-wise, not GPA-wise
Lectures are insanely good, but exams are pretty difficult if you are not particularly talented in math. If you have questions, ask them in his office hours DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS IN CLASS, UNLESS YOU'RE THAT ONE GUY THAT ALREADY KNOWS EVERYTHING, because I asked a question and got totally humiliated. Doesn't matter tho, man teaches like a LEGEND.
His lectures focus on theoretical aspects of how to derive a formula but he never shows us how to apply it. His exams are all about applying the formula and are extremely long and difficult. He always uploads practice exam answers a day before the exam but that's too late to help us prepare. I always studied for the exams and did not do well. AVOID
Midterm1 and 2 were fair so he gave you an illusion that this is a fair class. Final was ridiculously hard and no curve. Everyone I knew got a score around 30-40. I regret of choosing him to be my professor genuinely
Professor Crcombecque is a very good lecturer at explaining complex topics. He is very funny/mean sometimes and sometimes condescending if students ask dumb questions. Compared to other Calc 3 profs, his class is very slowly paced initially and speeds up quickly. Tests are fair but move very quickly. Pretty generous curve at the end.
Really grew on me over the course of the semester. His lectures got a lot better and were necessary to learn the Linear Algebra content, and I think he cared about teaching in an understandable and consistent way. There is weekly homework that is doable, frequent easy online quizzes. He could be mean/condescending, but if you can get through that.
While he can come off as a bit rude or sarcastic when someone answers a question incorrectly in class, I genuinely believe that Professor Crombecque is a fantastic lecturer who truly wants his students to understand the material. His homework and exams can be a bit difficult, but usually, they are quite fair and grading is somewhat lenient.
Once you get over his slight sassiness and accent, quite decent in his presentation of the material (most important theorems were proved in class and on the lecture notes). Weekly mini-quizzes and homework were well-implemented to incentivize staying current with the material.
Take for M225. TAs go over the odd HW problems in discussion. Gives a ton of good practice problems before each exam. Lectures are more about theory, but are helpful. Don't be intimidated - he's just French but not mean. Once you learn what he cares about for grading (after midterm 1 basically), the class isn't too bad (coming from a math major).
He was very condescending. He did not explain concepts well or nicely. No communication between him and the TA. Even if he didn't intend to be this way, he was no help.
Great Professor! The lectures were really interesting, and he is very humorous. The TAs were not the best, and sometimes you could encounter miscommunication between them and the professor. Pay attention to the lectures because sometimes some test questions will be shown only in the lecture (not included in HW). Overall, great experience.
Good but tough. He's sassy but keeps the lecture interesting. He doesn't take attendance but be sure to keep up with the (maany) homework and quizzes. Take him if you like math/already know the content, don't get offended by french humour and don't mind a heavy workload. Also, don't ask if he curves the final grade, you will never know.
One of the better math professors at USC. Sassy like others have said, but try to view it as funny rather than condescending. Lectures were good, homework and tests were always fair. Helpful in office hours as well. Overall a good teacher and person!
He's funny and a good lecturer. He banters with his students a lot, which I think a lot of the other reviewers don't get. He's super accessible for office hours which was the best part, you could literally go and do homework in his office hours and he'd help you out with anything. his tests are exactly like the practice tests, like the exact same.
Professor Crombecque's classes can be challenging, but engaging if you put in the work. The lectures cover theory well, and the practice problems are helpful. I found unstuckstudy and the TAs' discussion sessions invaluable for test prep. Overall, a rewarding class if you're up for the challenge.
His tests are longggg beware. His lectures are fine and well explained -- he is just a very abrasive person to the point where it comes off mean sometimes. He makes it intimidating to ask questions even if you know what's going on. Wouldn't recommend for anyone other than people who have already done lin alg.
