Great prof, lecture sheets help a lot with strange terms, highly recommended!
Really cool guy! Fun class, really funny
VERY good lectures. I would take his class even if it wasn't useful for my degree. Makes the whole period in history seem fascinating and important. Take-home final. Really enjoyed the course, would recommend him to anyone.

Brilliant historian. No one else can come close to him in the history dept. (besides Konnert)...although views on Iris Chang and the**** of Nanjing is very iffy. Should not let a grad student lecture on such a sensitive topic.
Has the ability to make a dry and boring subject interesting. Great professor with an excellent teaching style.
He knows his history inside out. He makes history more interesting and his teaching style is different from any prof that I've had.
Much better than Sciban. Really knows his info. Very knowledgeable
such an interesting class! I agree, this style of teaching is wayyyy different than scibans. The exams are straight forward. Overall, great prof!!
Very good prof! Makes lectures very easy to understand and straight forward. I would very highly recommend him for any Asian studies class. The large pictures of communist leaders in his office is kinda freaky though.
excellent prof, very helpful and such an interesting course. Tests are very fair! Learnded alot and look forward to his other classes.
Took Summer session in '03, very easy and relaxed pace, easy marker, missed a few classes for work and still got A-, most of his classes are marked by 2 tests and a paper, real easy to breeze through if you have a bit of background in Chinese History
Scibans only claim to knowledge of Asian history/culture is that he has a Chinese wife. Wright on the other hand has that, and a vast array of knowledge and experience. Has a book on any question you ask him, will take the time to talk to u, and the only one at the uc that teaches the way he does
He knows his material, but I guess I just don't like the course cuz I always manage to drift off in that class. Nice guy but I really do not enjoy that class or the way he talks...his tone is too monotonous.
He's a good prof. Lectures can be a bit dry at times... however he really knows his Chinese history. The grading scale is high (96% for an A!) but he is an easy marker - just make sure you attend class, take notes and study for the exams and you will be fine.
Excellent prof. Makes things very easy and straight forward. Knows ALOT about asian history. Generally fair / easy grading. Damn good prof.
He's been thoroughly sinicized :)
One of the best history professors at the UofC. Seems like he really knows everything on East Asian History. Is incredibly organized and always prepared for class.
he was very knowlegeable about the topics, seems to really know and enjoy everything about east Asia, a very interesting class and a very good prof
Best prof at U of C!!!
This prof is **** AWESOME! The most knowledgeable and selfless man ever. He actually makes his lectures interesting and because of him i'm minoring in Asian History. He did it for me and he will for you. First couple of classes are ZZzz but after he grows on you. Then you find yourself wanting to marry him even though your a man and hes married.
a very good prof, such a easy marker and he makes sure that all the material on the midterm are covered. Study the review sheets that he gives you and you'll do well on the tests.
great course, great prof!
Easy marker, gives plenty of material for exam prep, and knows his stuff. Lectures consist of all talk so be prepared to take plenty of notes. For exams, do the review and skim the texts, and all will be well. Good prof, good class, interesting topics.
Excellent Prof, Knows his stuff, very easy to seek help from and best of all, such an easy course! Got an A by not even studying, just attended the lectures. Didn't even have any of the textbooks. You'd be dumb to fail this class given this advice!
Very interesting material, good prof. Be ready to tak a LOT of notes! On average I wrote about 3 pages double sided each class! But I was very pleased with the quality of instruction, and the exams were super easy if you studied and went to class.
I'm in love with Dr. Wright. Well, that may be stretching it, but in my three years of university, I don't believe I've had a better professor. His lectures are coherent and well-balanced, and the exams are fairly easy if you've attended class and done the readings. Dr. Wright is simply quite an exceptional human being who always makes time for h
Dr. Wright is a good Prof. He loves what he does and is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the subject matter. My one warning is that this is a very depressig course. Totally put me off studying East Asia. After hearing the history of China for the past 200 years I almost want to shoot myself. That said the course is quite interesting.
Not very organize and not very nice. He grins a lot and cancel classes without letting students know ahead of time. He knows his stuff, but too one sided in his opinions. Not helpful at all when you go see him at his office. What a jerk!
He seems to know his stuff, but we're only a month into the course and he didn't show up for class. Obviously, if he needs to attend a "departmental funeral", class will be cancelled--however, couldn't he take a couple of minutes and send us a quick email or mention it last class?? I guess our schedules don't really matter...
Very good prof. Marks tests very, very easily if you've studied and attended class. While I'd recommend against the 4-hour Saturday section, the weekday section is probably much easier to digest.
Even though I'm pretty interested in the history of China, I found this class pretty boring and had a hard time not napping through it. Has a tendency to repeat things over and over. Helpful and nice, but if you're looking for a class that will enthrall you, this probably isn't it.
Dr Wright is an amazing prof. I've taken probably 5 different courses with him by now, and I've enjoyed all of them except the first year one. His own interest level in the subject always shines through, it's hard to get bored with a subject that the prof's so passionate about! He does tend to need to cancel lectures often, though.
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful prof. He is very passionate about what he teaches and most likely after taking a course with him you will fall in love with Asian History. Very smart and always willing to help out. Favorite history prof ever.
So far he only missed one class and that we watched a movie, so I'm not sure what people are in a huff (granted they may have had a diff experience). Engaging and I find he is excellent at foundations.
Engaging lectures, he knows what he is talking about, not an easy marker but fair and he is funny. I think he is well organized in his lectures which makes for good note taking! One of my favourite profs!
Awesome prof!! He's interested in what he's teaching and makes it very interesting.
Taken 3 courses with him and found all easy especially if you attend lectures, however highly recommend laptop for organization and the sheer fact you will be writing upwards of 5 pages of notes per class. His lecture outlines are great and his midterm/final exam reviews are really comprehensive. If you show up to his classes you WILL do well
Best Prof I have ever had and was the reason I changed my major.
Wow, this professor almost made me want to switch majors! Haha, that aside, Prof Wright is really passionate about his teaching and delivers concisely. He'll break out into random Mandarin phrases that he can't explain immediately in English - very interesting, and additional knowledge available if you have a Chinese language background.
Great prof!!!! One of the best History profs at UofC
Dr. Wright is an amazing teacher! He is engaging, and you can tell he really loves what he is doing. Although his class was early in the morning, it wasn't too heavy. Basically story time. He makes this course very interesting.
Interesting class...until the second half of the course but that is just my personal opinion. Gives outline prior to midterm/final so just attend and study the lectures and you will do fine.
This Prof. if is the reason my major is history. So good, and stands out as the most memorable Prof. at U of C. His texts were easy to read and very helpful and his lectures were extremely interesting.
Great professor as he was very good at lecturing and that is important since he doesnt give out notes. It would be a good idea to bring a laptop as he talks fast. Gives outline so study those and you will do fine. However, his grading scale is a bit high (at least in my opinion) since you need to get at least a 90 for an A-.
Great prof, very involved in material (speaks fluent mandarin) engaging, interesting, a blessing to the history dept. essay is easy to pass, midterm was small mc on texts, memorizing the times of the dynasties, and an easy one page essay. vomit information for essay. final was similar though more short andswer and bigger essay. take this class!
Awesome lecturer. Possibly the most interesting class I ever sat in through university.
Awesome prof, loves what he teaches and is genuinely knowledgable about asia, living there, even speaking fluent mandrin. Has a bit of yellow fever, tends to overvalue asian contributions and disvalue western culture, but only because he loves the east so much. Highly recommended I loved this class, and he is one of the best profs a uofc.
Very good lecturer and extremely knowledgable, he even throws in mandarin here and there. Jokes a few times and overall a joy to listen too. Class is easy but he has high standard so if you make a small mistake on tests/essay you can say goodbye to an A.
he is the best. so knowledgeable, so clear in his lectures and so approachable. i had no interest in history going into this class but he absolutely changed my mind! incredible
I went into this class with absolutely no interest in History, and definitely left with even less of an interest. He lectures without any ppts of any sort for the entire 1hr 15mins. His tests appear to be very easy... until you get your grade back. If you make one tiny mistake, and don't mention every detail, you'll be lucky to get a B.
Best prof Ive ever had, and one of the most interesting people Ive ever met. His lectures are incredibly interesting, and he always tries to help the students any way he can. His marking scale is very high, so you have to work a little bit harder, but that just makes it much more rewarding when he finally hands you that A.
Really good lecturer, although he doesn't use slides or power points, so get used to taking notes from just his speaking. Likes to promote his books, but it's okay he's an amazing writer and orator. Very good history professor, keeps the interest in the class high.
Profoundly gifted lecturer and writer. Classes are a joy, his textbook is a great read. Definitely not an easy A, but highly recommend at least sitting in for some of his lectures.Passionate and hilarious - his pre-recorded lecture was the highlight of my semester.
Great professor. This was an excellent class to take and I'd recommend it to anyone. You must attend lectures and write decent notes to do well. Gives a study guide for the final.
Dr. Wright has interesting lectures. They are well organized and he knows the subject very well. I went to see him outside of class though and was shocked, he did not appear confident at all and was not helpful. Did not sound like the man in lecture at all.
BEST. PROF. EVER. I could give a rats ass about asian history, but I probably know more about it than any asian I know because of this man. He can take any material and spin it into an interesting lecture.I wish he taught other areas of history, but alas! Contrary to what others have said, I found he was an easy marker, with A's in all his classes,
I took this class a year ago in the Spring and it was nice. The class was small so we were able to have lots of discussion with the professor. Very gifted man and I'd suggest any one to take a class from him. Attending class and listening to lectures is vital to your grade.
Really great prof! He made the lectures very interesting, I always looked forward to going to his lectures. You can tell he genuinely loves what he teaches. Study your notes and the textbook and you will do well enough. However make sure any facts you include in your paper or exam are 100% correct because he marks pretty hard.
This is the second class I've taken with Dr. Wright and I plan to take more in the future. He is a fantastic professor that makes any lecture easy to listen to. He is a very easy marker and his tests are very straight forward, no tricks at all. His study guide is a major help for the midterms and final. One of the best history professors ever.
One of the more interesting classes I have taken. A very knowledgeable professor, I would definitely take another of his classes. Only downside was the amount of readings required, but great class nonetheless.
Dr. Wright is an amazing lecturer, his presentation of material is chrstyal clear, and you will receive the grade you deserve. The only downside is reading the 3 novels, and having 10 MC on each for the final; many questions were random and about small details rather than the "big picture" like he claimed. Still did very well in his class.
Loved him.
Very interested in the subject matter, engaging, interesting, good class.
Dr. Wright knows his stuff and makes lectures very interesting. Also, he really, really cares about his students. Book an appointment and go talk to him if you have any questions, you'll leave his office smiling. He recommends books, and tells you what he expects to see on your papers. He's awesome.
Really helpful and extremely interesting!
He gives brilliant lectures; you'll always learn something new from every lecture. However, the only thing I didn't like was his obscure scale for marking. An 80% is barely an B-. I guess it's because he attended Princeton so he feels justified in using that same scale here.
Great prof! Fair amount of readings, but his lectures were very interesting. Definitely recommended!
Favorite professor by far. Very funny. Very interesting. Very fair.
I took his Chinese History class this semester and it was awesome. Super interesting and by far, the most useful interesting text book I have had for a uni course. He provides details reviews for the exams which are extremely useful as well, because a lot of the test is based on them. He marks very fairly and knows what he is talking about. :D
Dr Wright is an expert on Asian history and has written numerous articles/books on the topic. His lectures were entertaining and fascinating. However if you require PP slides and visual stimulation they are lacking. Very helpful and approachable! If you are interested in Asian History in any capacity he is a must!
Nice guy, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the subject, easy to approach. Lectures sometimes go into very fine detail and can get tedious. Grade scaling is a bit high and some written questions on tests are specific which makes it hard to study for since they are many details.
Took two classes with David. I learned tons from him, and still remember some of it, I genuinely became interested in China. He's ethusastic , lectures like hes telling a story. Make sure you give the who, what, where and how on the short answer questions. Midterms are written. Fair marker. Textbooks are always interesting. Really nice guy.
Took 2 classes with this prof. I should have sat in the front& taken notes diligently from day 1. I ended up dropping classes. I found it hard to study for the mid term! I didn't know what to study or the expectations. He has a mono tone voice. I am fascinated by history of china & east asia. I did not enjoy his class but he was a cool guy!
I have taken 3 classes with Dr. Wright, and he is one of the best profs I had during my degree.
Great teacher, he wrote the text book and pretty much just says exactly what is in there during the lectures so there is no need to attend the lectures. the grading scale is too high but the final is easy
Really great prof. The midterm while being written was intimidating because he expects you to know quite a bit, but is a REALLY easy marker
One midtermpaperfinal. Easy marker but his grading scale is way too high. Got a high 80 overall but it only amounts to a B. Very clear lectures but doesn't post notesuse slides. Takes a long time to email back. Has study guides for exams. 3 novels to read for the final - easy reads, clear questions.
Dr. Wright may be an easy marker but his overly high grading scale heavily weighted multiple choice questions (which you have to do the readings for) is not really fair compensation. He's an excellent and very clear lecturer and an expert on Chinese history. He also makes you read three books for the final exam on top of light textbook readings.
Wright is an absolutely amazing lecturer, he seems to have an unlimited amount of knowledge about China. Lectures are interesting but can be really long and boring at times, but the exams are extremely easy, lecture notes are needed but read the textbook carefully and you should pass flawlessly. But Wright doesn't use D2L so marks are a mystery!
I didn't read the assigned readings and just wrote whatever I remembered from lectures and I passed the midterm with an A. Professor Wright is an extremely easy marker and a very intriguing lecturer. Highly recommended.
Professor Wright is an amazing lecturer and a fair marker. I genuinely looked forward to attending his lectures, he is clearly very passionate about what he does. He doesn't post notes online though, so I would definitely recommend going to class. Just one midterm, one paper, and the final.
Dr. Wright is an extrodinary prof, he's well-researched. This course is very interesting , attendance is important since he doesn't post notes online. The midterm and final was especially straightforward and easy. The paper is marked fairly easy as well. For an option this class was perfect. I'd highly recommend it.
Wonderful prof, very knowledgeable, very into sharing his knowledge, cares for the students, easily approachable, and hilarious as hell, also all his tangents somehow always wind up supporting his original point. He doesn't post lecture notes though so you really have to take notes in class. Bit of a hard marker though.
Great instructor. Passionate and knowledgeable. This was my third course I've taken by Dr. Wright and I'd take more in a heart beat.
I had Prof. Wright for HTST209 and took a 9am class just so I could learn from him again. He's enthusiastic, knowledgable, clear, and loves talking about Asia. I've gone to him during office hours for help with an essay topic and ended up spending over an hour talking about China. His paper was long and lots of reading to do, but worth it!
Great introduction course to China, really knows his stuff. He is an excellent lecturer but doesn't post anything online. He wrote the textbook, so it follows along well to the course and isn't very long or hard to read. The term essay is clearly laid out and explained. The midterm was easy, but hard to get done in 50 mins if you want an A.
His class is an easy A and while I didn't attend many lectures he is clearly passionate about China. He also goes off topic and over time a bit too. Make sure you have his textbook because everything he talks about in lecture is there; he doesn't post anything online.
I've taken 3 courses with Dr. Wright, and I love his lecture style. Lots of reading though, some is repetitive but you have to at the least skim about 6 books to get an A (most available online). He's very knowledgable and his classes are worth the time it takes to study. He's a fair marker and has 2 midterms, a paper, and a final.
Really passionate and knowledgeable about the lecture material. Very engaging lectures. Had an overview for each lecture (topic, terms, etc), but did not post notes. Lots of reading required, didn't ask for really specific details, but needed know at least what each source is arguing for and why. Exams were fair. I really enjoyed the class.
One of, if not the best professor i've had. As a history major, its nice to have someone like Dr. Wright teaching you. He tells you exactly what he wants, and gives you everything you need to succeed. Im taking as many of his classes as possible for the rest of my time at U of C.
He's a good lecturer, although it's sometimes hard to get down enough info considering he goes quickly and doesn't post slides. He assigned books to read outside of class, I didn't read them entirely and did fine on the q's asked. He made us pay $10 for a course outline through which was kind of annoying.
Great Prof! His lectures are amazing and highly informative. If you have an interest in history, you surely won't fall asleep in his lectures. He is very friendly and eager to help students after class and during office hours. Midterms are straight-forward.
Dr. Wright was one of my first History profs and continues to be my favorite. He is very passionate about his work and cares honestly for his students' success, so if you attend classes and find a genuine interest to base your paper on, he will go to great lengths to help. Wish I could take the class again!
Professor Wright is an incredibly smart man who is overall a great professor. My one complaint is about the midterm, which ignored at least 50% of the lecture material. I found it to be unfair and difficult. However, the lectures are very enjoyable and engaging, and I appreciate the professor's knowledge and experience. Imperfect, but recommended.
Nice teacher, really tries to help you with your papers and studying for midterms. I only had a couple issues with him; 1. He goes wayyyy to fast in his lectures, making you miss at least half the information 2. He sometimes switches to chinese halfway through a lecture so you become completely lost 3. His midterm is hard and highly weighted
I love this guy. He knows his stuff about this subject and he teaches it with passion and enthusiasm. He also moves through the material in a very logical way that's easy to follow. The only negative is that he expects you to buy and read four or five different books. Still a great instructor. I would definitely recommend this course.
Dr. Wright is passionate about China. Lectures were interesting at times but a downside is the fact that he expects you to read like 4 books. You can skim through the classics but you are going to have to read the textbook for the final. Also, formatting for the term paper isn't clearly defined (i.e. you have to number pages etc)
This seminar is the equivalent of two courses. Going through 13 books in 12 weeks and a writing a test on the readings every week with 3 tests on the last day is not easy at all. However, if you're up for it, this is class will change how you think about China. Best class I have ever taken, but the hardest thing I have ever worked for in my BA.
It was an absolute pleasure to be in Dr. Wright's class. His lectures are engaging and he teaches relatively dry content in such an interesting way. He assigns four books but only one of them is a heavy read. This course really changes the way you think of China, and in life in general. I 100% recommend Dr. Wright.
Dr. Wright is decent. He seems to be a little pro-CCP but nothing too crazy. VERY DIFFICULT in the seminar class, he makes you read a book every week and then tests you on it at the start of the next class. As long as you are okay with some hard work, Dr. Wright should be a fine choice for professor.
Probably the best prof in the history department. Super engaging lectures and discussions. This was a 500 level course and he made sure we understood that: we had to read a min of 1 book a week as part of the course material. It was difficult, but if you work hard you will be rewarded. Amazing class about Chinese military history
I feel like he would be good in an in person class but online he was the worst. 15 page paper with the only guidance coming 6 days before the due date, zero outline posted. Simply does not know how to work online tools like d2l. Did not respond to any of my many emails even the important ones. To be honest, this felt like a scam
He's a really good lecturer, it's like he's telling a story. But his main flaw is his disorganization. He rarely responds to emails or students questions in chat on zoom. He only gave the midterm and essay marks.. so no feedback on where u went wrong. We were graded only by a midterm, essay and final... so its really risky if you cant get feedback.
The organization of the class was terrible. Every class we read a book, took a quiz on it, had between 2-4 student presentations, and still had to have class discussion. There were too many shifts in topic per class to make this viable. He never answers emails, and never gives you your marks. However, I did learn a lot so there you go.
His lecturing is great and he is also an easy marker. But hes slow at marking and hard to reach. Especially when this course is online. Theres also a lot of readings: a textbook and three books. But grading on these readings are fairly easy if you actually read them. Overall, solid choice.
He is obviously quite passionate about history but is not great at going through the slides or making them full screen and readable.
Here's what you need to know about professor Wright: He is very passionate about history, he does not like using visuals in lectures (eg. PowerPoints), he assigned three books for this course, and if you need to get into contact with him, good luck. Overall, he's a good professor, I just wish he had put visuals on his screen during lectures.
His lectures are interesting, he's passionate about what he teaches and comes off very humble/human. Super hard to reach, TA would be your best bet. Show up to lectures! He does not always post ppts/material.
Dr. Wright does not interact with the class. If you expect anything participatory, he is probably not for you. The small number of projects in the class carry a lot of weight, and Dr. Wright does not return grades quickly, but the work itself isn't that hard. Find a subject you're interested in and write a good final paper. You'll be fine.
Professor Wright isn't the best with technology but he's super passionate about what he teaches and his tests are straight-forward. He was an absolute pleasure and I'll definitely take a course from him again if I can. As long as you watch the lectures, you're all good to go test wise.
Although he is a bit unorganized and slow at marking, it's always a privilege to take any of Dr. Wright's classes. He is knowledgable, an engaging lecturer, and a fair marker
While the subject was interesting, we had to read an entire book every week to keep up. Each class would be a test on the reading, group discussion then a student presentation so the classes are busy. We never received assignment/test grades until the end of the semester so it was impossible to know where you stood.
Dr. Wright's course was very intreguing especialy to someone like me who knew nothing about the subject and is just taking an option course. He puts his heart into his lectures making them a pleasure to listen to and I enjoyed all of them. The quizzes are fair and the challenge of this course I would say is the term paper but I'm rubbish at writing
Dr. Wright is an absolutely engaging speaker and each lecture is jam-packed with interesting information. It is clear that he's very passionate about what he teaches, is very knowledgeable, and his anecdotes are conducive to what his students learn. He sometimes strays from the topic, but when he does, it's still fascinating.
Professor Wright is an amazing professor. Although he does not post notes on PowerPoints, he provides a clear outline of key terms in every lecture using a pdf. He is an inspirational, caring, and helpful prof when it comes to his passion for history and he never hesitates to guide his students though problems regarding careers and course content.
Dr. Wright was very knowledgable about the subject and has clearly been doing this for many years. He's old-fashioned, so his lectures were almost exclusively oral and he was inaccessible outside of class. However, he was approachable, an easy grader and very clear about what to study. Absolutely attend class though because he has no slides to post
Absolute girl boss moment.
Would not recommend as an easy A, the class is very difficult. Curtis is an amazing lecturer, and the course is super interesting. You will have to take notes as he posts nothing online / isn't D2L savvy. Would not take again if I had the choice but only because the course was tough, if you must take a history course this is an amazing option.
Was a nice prof, but never answered emails and was very difficult to reach outside of class. Checking our grades was extremely difficult, since he never uploaded them on d2l, and only put some grades up after class was over.
Dr. Wright is amazing! 10/10 would take one of his classes again. He is so interesting to listen to. He is a bit hard to get a hold of outside of class. Marks fairly. Fair amount of work. Learned lots.
Dr. Wright is an amazing lecturer and is highly respected by his students. I admire his passion for history, and he teaches with a purpose. If you're the type of person to skip class, maybe don't choose this course...But if you have an appreciation for learning about history, this is a great class. You will be inspired by him.
Professor Wright is an engaging lecturer, though a bit old-school. Attend class and take notes - he doesn't post slides. The workload is fair, and he grades reasonably. I found unstuckstudy helpful for exam prep along with the textbook. Solid course if you're interested in history.
There are 4 textbooks to be read and even after reading them you get very less marks. He never replies to emails. No notes posted on D2L. Even the grades are not published you just get ur midterm back but for term paper & final you never know what you got, it is just the final grade that you'll be able to see in your UOfC account. NOT A GPA BOOSTER
This professor is quite incompetent. His lectures contain numerous errors, some of which could easily be corrected just by checking Wikipedia.
Dr. Wright is an amazing professor who is extremely passionate and fun to listen to. Definitely attend class and you will do great since he often gives hints and topics on the exam during the lecture. Gives helpful and clear advice during office hours, especially for essay ideas.
He is super knowledgeable and passionate about the topic. I recommend doing the readings before class, lectures have no slides just him talking but I find it to be clear while still interesting. If you do the readings prior its pretty easy to follow since you have a general knowledge and the lectures just enhance that. Midterm, final and term paper
If you are Chinese just choose this class, he's knowledgable and nice. Stuff in this course are hard tbh cause the history range it included are wide. It's still hard to get A tbh even for a native Chinese hhhhhh, so I would say don't take it unless you know very well about China's history.
