Very hard class. You have to literally memorize his notes!! No curves!!!
his jokes are not funny and sometimes he comes off as not being very nice, but his class isnt bad if you go to class and do you're work. tests are fair and are straight from the notes- he makes notes for you
He acted very **** at times...that was a bit scary but he was ok professor, I did learn a lot from his class.
dr davies is really nice and he is very helpful. the class is definitely challenging but you will learn a lot and it's not difficult to do well, just learn the notes
I love Dr. Davies. Hes smart, conducive to students.. interested in students learning and interesting. I want to have his children!
GO TO CLASS, the material is not so much hard but there is just a lot of it, know your notes, Davies is funny and very smart, don't need the textbook so much, it is a good class and I recommend it highly
He's deffinately a good professor. Even though I'm not doing all that well (no curve), he's still good. READ & MEMORIZE all his notes, get your hands on some old exams, and you'll get a good grade. Failing to do the above (like me) and you'll regret it.
If you literally memorize EVERY WORD (I mean it)of your notes and go to class you will be fine. Also, get some old tests if possible. His final is made up entirely of questions from the midterms.
he made lots of references to drinking beer, that's all it takes to win me over. rock on davies
Good professor. Interesting class. If you get the old tests(new tests are identical) and look at the notes and you don't get at least a B+, you are a moron.
Pay attention in class and you will do fine. His final for Fall 2003 was made up from the other 3 tests! EZ!
Very goofy, tries to be funny, tests are somewhat easy but I got screwed over b/c i did not have the "right" past questions to study from. Otherwise, memorise the notes, read the text carefully and u should be fine
This guy really tries to turn microbiology into stand up comedy. He provides the notes for you on BlackBrd but doesn't explain well in class (kinda goofy). However, the subject is intersting and he enjoys it a lot. Good class and ok teacher after all.
Microbio lecture tests are not that bad as long as you go to class and have the old tests. Microbio labs on the other had are basically impossible. Make sure to keep an impeccable notebook and you will need to know EVERYTHING for the practicals.....this is not an exaggeration!

Awesome class. Go to lecture and memorize all the notes and you'll do fine. Entertaining in lectures too, makes what could be a dull subject a lot more interesting.
Great Class! Professor is very interesting and passionate about the subject. To do well, bring the notes from Blackboard to class and take your class notes on those. Memerize EVERYTHING in the notes for your exam and use the book for reference at times. Don't need old exams, ques change slightly, will make you choose wrong answer on your exam.
Helpful, easy to approach- which is important. He teases students so don't think hes picking on you. If you have his old tests the class becomes much easier (even if he says not). If you don't there are trick questions on the test that require very careful review of the notes to understand. oh, and he doesnt answer his email so go to office hours.
You need to get the old exams in order to do well, don't read the textbook, just notes. Very corny but very helpful. He loves to kid around. Go to class
I do not recommend this class. To do well, you do not need to learn and understand, but merely memorize and regurgitate facts (often trivia - such as mass of an e. coli cell). At the end of the course, you will forget all the trivia, and see that you haven't learned much. A poorly designed course. Oh, and old exams are a MUST.
I really didn't mind going to lecture, he's pretty funny to listen to and I feel like I did learn a lot. HOWEVER...my grade wont reflect this at all. His tests are pointless and don't really test on concepts just a lot of useless facts. I didn't have old tests and that is obvious because the people that did have old tests did great in the class.
Last post pretty much hit the nail on the head for this class. Dont take this class unless you have past exams and/or are willing to memorize all his lecture notes word for word.
worst teacher ever. everything in the class is based on having old tests or completely knowing his notes. text book was useless. don't complain to him because he doesn't give a****. easy A as long as you have old tests. if you don't your pretty much screwed.
This class was my worst experience at Bing. Classtime consisted of Davies reading notes out loud. The tests focused on factual trivia from the notes. Tests repeat old questions and those that have old tests do well. Otherwise it's almost impossible to do well. Even if you study hard, you can't predict what trivia he'll ask. Don't take Davies' class
To do well in this class, you have to memorize his notes word for word. Repeated questions from old exams help. This is not learning, but a waste of time. He does not emphasize understanding of the subject, but acting like a trained monkey. Avoid his classes if you can.
this class has given me nothing but anguish. i learned a lot, but my grade did not show it, because of the terrible test format. he doesn't realize how unfair his class is, and it's no use talking to him about it.
if you're really interested in microbio, sit in, and don't take it for a grade. this class will bring your average down. tests are ridiculous, and your grade doesn't reflect your effort.
AVOID
perfect example of a tenured professor that doesnt give a s*** about his studnets
i hated his intro to micro class. very unfair.
At the beginning of the semester he took time out to tell us that his rating on this site didn't determine if he was a good professor or not, but it's true. He's a jerk. No matter how hard you study (even is you somehow manage to remember ever detail from his outlines) you are still not prepared. Having old tests does help but you need 2-3 sets.
what an awful class! material is fragmented and exams are poorly designed. professor is uncaring. he says he loves us but he lies.
Another under-rated professor. I really doubt the comments on this website are by a bunch of "i dont go to class, and I get an F" kids. Seriously, Dr.Davies' lectures are fun, and easy to understand. Tests are not very easy, but master the notes, and you will do fine. He doesnt keep all his office hours, but can be found in his lab.
Extremely arrogant type of prof that just likes to hear himsef talk. You'll do well if you have old exams. Prof would complain about how it wasn't fair that students had old exams YET he continuned to ask questions from old exams. Avoid class if you can
I came away from this class having learned very little. Davies is a poor teacher and lectures are detail-oriented rather than concept-oriented. Exams are a poor reflection of your grasp on the subject. I strongly discourage you from taking this class.
I am in medical school now, but something made me remember davies today and I thought it would be nice to warn you guys. His class is BAD. don't take it. don't do it. not even if you must take another bio class to graduate. find a way around it. he made me miserable. his class is poorly and unfairly structured. gl
Very funny guy. Old tests are a must. Makes microbiology very interesting. The class material is dense and difficult but Dr. Davies is really good about clarifying things. Take this class if you are interested in the subject...not just for an elective!
Dr. Davies knows a great deal about Microbiology. However, I often had difficulty following his lectures. The exams covered large amounts of material and were very difficult to study for based off of his lecture notes. Exam emphasis is often fact based rather than concept based. If you have old exams, they will help out tremendously.
Get those previous tests! They will save your life. The textbook is a waste of time despite what he says. Study the notes hardbody, go to every single lecture and you are guaranteed an A. Great professor but to get hold of him his tough. His office is in the ITC dept which is far from campus. Great for research as well
Dr. Davies is a really nice guy. His lectures are a little over everyone's head but if you have the old tests and you ACTUALLY STUDY THEM AND THE NOTES you can do really well. take this class if you are used to bio classes its one of the easier ones
I am pretty sure that a lot of these people didn't go to class. If you pay attention in class and review the notes and powerpoints it isn't hard to do well. His exams are straightforward and directly from lectures. He emphasizes studying from the book, but you really don't need to. Oh, that you need old exams to do well is complete BS.
Shouldn't be that hard as long as you memorize what he writes in his notes. Specifics are not as important as the general concept and even though he says to read the textbook you can do well with just the lecture notes and power points. Old test will help he repeats A LOT of the same questions but you don't need them to do well.
Student who has three years of straight As in college so far and got a B in this class. Very disappointed in the teacher; frequently makes mistakes and goes off on story tangents that aren't useful. Repeats a lot from old tests, but asks questions in a very inconsistent way. Aggravating and I did not learn very much, but was required for the lab.
His lectures are boring. All he does is read the notes he posts online. I read the chapters in the book because i noticed he didn't go into great detail for some things. Come to lecture and write down what he says! Exams get harder each time! If you've taken bio classes, it's the same thing...just micro! He messes up a lot and tells stories.
Three exams determine your grade and he grades stringently. Each exam has a lot of material and material is very dense. Does not give any partial credit even if a question may have 5 parts in it. Doesn't have discussion and has a 2 hour lecture on Friday instead, which was quite painful to sit through as he just reads off lecture notes mostly.
Dr. Davies is smart, but inefficient; you won't learn much besides enhancing your memorization skill. Listen to me VERY carefully. Trust me now and thank me later. Procrastinate 3 days before an exam: you will most likely FAIL. Know the notes in & out. You will get a B+ at best. 3. KNOWING the stuff & gettin old exam is the only way to score A.
If you memorize old tests and his lecture notes you should do okay. The class is based solely on 3 test grades which makes it harder to get a good grade. His lectures are dry and it's not really necessary to attend them.
Davies has to be one of the greatest professors I've had here at Binghamton. His lectures are great and he really inspires you to go into the research aspect of biology that many pre-med students ignore (myself included). You will have to study for his test, but when you see a good grade on your test you'll know you earned it. 5/5
This is the worst professor I ever had at Binghamton, his test is so hard, only 3 test for total grade for class. Dont take hime if you have choice, he makes mistakes and is not clear at all.
He is a quirky guy and isn't the best at getting all topics across but if you use the book as well you can easily learn everything. He does throw in a couple really specific questions on exams, but this is college. He is one of the better professors I've had in bing. Also he LOVES microorganism and knows a lot of cool random facts.
This class is complete memorization, you cannot wait till one day before test to study, YOU WILL FAIL, study ahead and get old tests, they help a lot. He makes mistakes and sometimes you will have no idea what he did. There is no discussion, HE TALKS FOR 2 HOURS STRAIGHT NO BREAK, which i think is unfair. Office hours only once a week.
You need the old exams to take this course. He questions are worded in a weird manor and if you don't have to old exams you will be behind everyone else. He knows old exams are out there and only changes 2-3 questions per exam. Also he fell behind and just decided to fly through several chapters to catch up but expects us to know them well.
Very knowledgable but not the best at teaching. Lectures are boring and he just reads over the notes that are available on blackboard. Test material isn't complicated to understand but it's very specific and covers A LOT of material so you need to be studying along the way or plan ahead time to study.
3 tests for entire course grade, no drops. Fill in the blank and difficult multiple choice make the tests nearly impossible even with old tests. Need to spend several several hours a week in order to get a good grade because you have to understand all the info inside and out. And he makes mistakes in lectures so good luck.
The lectures for this course were not engaging, and Dr. Davies would frequently make mistakes in lecture. It was evident that he values his research over teaching, and it made this class really unpleasant. The grades are made up of only 3 exams with very specific questions. Skip it unless you need it to graduate.
Terrible. Tests are hard. Too much material. No forgiveness whatsoever. This is 20 times harder compared to pre-health microbio, which is completely unfair.
Dr Davies is truly a great, knowledgeable professor. He knows exactly what he's talking about which matters when it comes to this class. He is very specific on his exams, but you only really need old exams as he copies most questions year-to-year. His lectures can be dull, especially the 2 hour Friday lectures. Overall he's great, quirky, and funny
He truly loves microorganisms and wants to get us to love them as well. He's very knowledgeable and seemingly has a never-ending trove of cool facts. He has a very dry sense of humor that I was able to appreciate greatly. The class is only 3 non-cumulative exams so you have to know the material well!
I love Dr Davies!!! Hes SO passionate about microorganisms, and inserts tidbits about his research where relevant (and only where relevant). He has so many interesting facts about microbiology that he loves to share. Hes also HILARIOUS if you appreciate dry, lowkey humor. The class is only 3 exams but if you memorize youll do fine!
Dr. Davies is a great person to get to know. He is funny, caring, and passionate. Go to his office hours and he will clear any confusion up. Tests are not bad if you do the studying. Take the lab with him if you can, it's actually fun to go to and a very relaxed environment with him as the professor. All in all a great guy!
Dr. Davies is one of my favorite professors I've had at Binghamton! He's really passionate about microbiology and it shows. HOWEVER, his tests are ridiculous. 100+ pages of lecture notes per test to memorize, you have to know EVERY LITTLE DETAIL. Test questions are hard and very specific. GET OLD TESTS or be prepared to memorize everything.
Dr. Davies is pretty nice and a funny guy, but his lectures are extremely boring. Our class was given only 3 exams as our entire grade. They are very specific questions, so make sure you get a hold of old exams! He has barely changed them since he started teaching in 1999. If you have those, you won't even need to understand the material.
One of the most awesome and sweetest professor I've had in bing. Although his exams aren't easy, he is accessible outside of class and is super helpful if you go to his office hours. He is very passionate about microbiology but can side track a bit during lectures. If you study the notes and past exams, you will definitely do well in the class!
the nicest and most accommodating prof during the pandemic. gave an optional final exam bc students were concerned about their grades. a solid lecturer and did not call people out for missing class. was available outside of class and always answered questions during lecture. the tests actually reflected lecture material. no quizzes or hw.
Really passionate guy. He knows a lot about what he's teaching. I love hearing about tidbits of his research during class. The class can be boring at time because of how he speaks, but the material is very interesting. Your only grades come from 3 exams but he hasn't changed them in years so find a previous student and get them from them.
Please do not take this class. Graded off of 3 exams, nothing else. Exams are straight from the notes, but there's 50-70 pages per exam and he flies through material if he gets behind in lecture. He gave an "optional" final since people were worried about grades but if you fail it still counts. He clearly doesnt enjoy teaching & is condescending
3 exams determine your grade. Unless you memorize 300 ppts worth of information for each exam, you won't pass.
man has no heart and only cares about himself. He offers no form of weight to the grade other than the three almost impossible tests he offers. You would think he would curve, but no he loves seeing the downfall of his students. Most teachers like to see their students thrive and do well, but not this one. Class made me miserable and so depressed
I didn't like Davies when I took 314 and withdrew. However, the lab, even though it is time consuming, you get out early most of the time and it's a very easy, fun lab. I got to know Davies and ended up liking him a lot. The only hard things were the midterm and practical but the labs are very easy and no write ups. The only lab I've actually liked
Dr. Davies class is a moderate one because your grade is dependent on tests. Criticize me all you want, but I get A- and A in my science classes because of tests, quizzes, and assignments. With this class, I was averaging 80s on the exams, and an optional final comprehensive exam that is weighted equally as the other ones. 98 on the final, no help.
He was so bad. I wanted to give him a zero but thats not possible. Therefore Ill give him a 1/5.
Not sympathetic to his students should not be a teacher. Horrible just dont take him
Why isnt there a 0 option? He actually was the worst. My reason for being depressed all semester
I honestly do not know where all of these harsh comments are coming from. Dr. Davies is a great guy and is passionate about what he does. He is not "condescending" as a lot of you say, but it's just that he is very knowledgeable. Many people who give these bad reviews have soft skin. Overall, great professor.
I took this class last semester. The guy knows a lot and is very smart on the topic, but he cants convey the information to everyone. It's either you understand the guy or you're lost from the very beginning. There are only 3 tests and you have to memorize literally almost everything in order to take and to pass this class.
He is very caring for his students and is great at answering questions. Good professor to get to know if you need letters of recommendation. Very knowledgeable about micro but he often goes off topic during lectures and falls behind. His tests are very fair as long as you show up to class and study. Only problem is the grade is made up of 3 tests.
Not sure why he has all these negative reviews. Yea, Microbiology is obviously a hard upper level science class, but as long as you put in the effort to study and pay attention in class you should do fine. Professor is very easy-going and understanding to talk to. Knows a lot about the subject and cares about his students.
A lot of these reviews are aimed at the course itself, not Davies. He's super knowledgeable. Sometimes lectures can get boring, but its microbiology, what do you expect. Grade is based only on 3 tests, but if you study they're manageable. Be prepared to put in some study hours and you'll do well
I have no idea who is giving this man good ratings. He is a nice enough guy I guess but his class is horrible. The only grades are 3 exams, normally I am not that bothered by that but in this class it was bad cause he tests on the smallest details. He is bad at lecturing, he just reads his notes. Very often he will misspeak and say something wrong
All things considered, professor is friendly and has good humor, but class structure is a nightmare. Grade is solely determined by three/four exams. None get dropped. Almost certainly no curve. Took this at the same time as orgo and orgo felt like the easier class. Studied for days, attended all lectures, still expecting this to tank my GPA.
I tried my best to succeed in the class but Davies exams are extremely complex. For the exams you need to MEMORIZE ALL material through and through, if not do not expect a good grade. He is boring to the point of tears and frustration. I think he is terrible at keeping the class engaged. He ONLY grades based on tests (no drop), keep that in mind.
Grades based off 3-4 exams, most questions focus on obscure details, some short answer/free response. Students ask questions and he treats them like theyre dumb. He says things to his favorites like "this is a baby exam" "how was the spelling test?" By far the worst and rudest professor at Binghamton, his slides have barely changed from the 1990s.
Idk why he has bad reviews but he was honestly one of my favorite professors. He knows the material well. Just show up to lecture (he gives test hints) and to study just memorize lecture the notes for exams. If you don't like memorization do not take this class. I like how his test questions are straightforward and not trying to trick you like most
The class itself is difficult and is only based off 3 exams and an optional final (which will count if you decide to take it). Lecture content is heavy but he does provide lecture notes be ready to memorize and some of the questions are very nit picky. Dr. Davies is a nice person however he just reads off the slides and gives poor explanations.
Your entire grade is based on three exams being 33% each, the final is optional but if you take it it counts. He's a nice guy but he reads off slides for every lecture, you really don't need to go to class because he posts them. If you were to accidentally find old exams on studocu/ course hero he uses the exact same questions from literally 2007.
Where do I begin? Lab is mandatory twice a week, you have two quizzes every week, at the start of lab. Having to memorize lab experiments and take the midterm and the final practical is absurd. The amount of information you have to learn is extremely unnecessary and time-consuming. We are not microbiologists, we are students. Highly don't recommend
Stay Away.
You are only graded on 3 exams and an optional final. People who do well in this class either sit EVERY night for 2-3 hours memorizing the endless content for each exam or know someone who has taken the class and used their old tests (which are practically the same). Office hours are off campus in the middle of the day. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Honestly, kinda goated. Only 4 tests (3 + optional final) so you have to LOCK IN as hard as possible, but during lecture he'll tell you a lot about what's going to be on the exam. He also likes to ask little reminder questions during lecture and honestly those help with understanding a lot. Office hours were kind of a nightmare to get to though.
teaches as if everyone is microbio grad students. reads straight off slides but still makes a lot of mistakes. only graded on exams which are short answer questions based on super minute details from hundreds of ppt slides. rambles during lecture and forgets what he's talking about halfway through a sentence, making it impossible to take notes.
Love prof Davies. Lecture attendance is not mandatory and barely anyone goes, however, he will tell you verbatem what questions will be on the test, so you should go. Practice tests will be your best friend, they're identical to the exam, don't take this class if you can't get any.
worst professor i've ever had. graded on exams only. ridiculously specific questions that are up to his own interpretation. hundreds of lecture slides per exam. not accommodating whatsoever to rescheduling exams if needed. run. do not take. class genuinely made me depressed.
Doesn't know how to teach, he just reads off his own lecture slides and gets sidetracked every five seconds and goes on a tangent without finishing his previous thought. His lectures are impossible to study from, the only way to pass is by finding old exams to memorize questions from which unfortunately I didn't know until the end of the course.
