I really learned alot from Prof Dean. He makes history (yuk) enjoyable.
I hate history, but I loved this class. Way to go, Dr. Dean!
Dr. Dean is the best! He used the real housewives of Atlanta as an example. Great teacher!
History is not particularly my strong suit. However, Dr. Dean definitely made this course enjoyable.
I love Dr. Dean
Dr. Dean is one of my favorite professors! He cares about each of his students and loves to help. In his free time, he counsels students about their majors and possible career paths.
Best teacher ever. Great person very supportive.
Professor Dean is a great teacher, and is engaging because of his jokes. He can be a little insensitive when it comes to these jokes, but he understands the need for mental breaks and often takes time to show random youtube videos to cool down.
For an honors class, this class was so easy! He is such a solid dude, during Thanksgiving he offered his house and gave all of us his Facebook and phone number so we could talk to him if needed, basically he really cares about his students and job. The lectures are pretty long and kinda boring but he tries his best. He likes making it easy as well
Loved Dr. Dean!!! Hope i can have him again!!
I really enjoyed being in Dr. Dean's class. His lectures are interesting and he genuinely cares about his students
Dr. Dean is an amazing professor. Not only does he really care about his students, but his goal is to ensure that you pass his class. If you come to class and do the work, you can't fail.
Best teacher at GCU. By far my favorite. Everyone should take his class. He respects students and wants to discuss things with them. Does not want to just show up and teach.
He is very open that this is a low level course. He respects the students and attempts to make his class engaging and interesting. If you show up to class he will change most of the assignment to in class worksheets and it saves you a ton of time!
He was my favorite professor at GCU so far. He was brilliant, and the most chill person ever. He would always help if needed, and related really well with students. WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND.
Professor Dean was a super fun teacher! It wasn't always great to sit there and listen to history, but he is very funny and tries to make it enjoyable.
Loved his teaching!
Honestly one of the most wonderful human beings I've ever encountered! I learned so much from him as a teacher within the class! He is understanding and smart as hell. What a guy!
Dr. Dean is a really nice person and you can tell he cares about his students. The UNV106HN class itself is really pointless and boring, so it's hard to be engaged in his class. Would definitely recommend him because he is an easy grader and he tries to make this class better. He takes attendance, but if you skip a few classes it doesn't matter.
If you are not a History major, chances are you'll find this topic incredibly boring. Dr. Dean does a great job at making it as interesting as possible. Class time is 100% lecture, and he let us out early every time. Most of the papers due were replaced with in class assignments, so go to class especially around the paper's due dates. Super easy!!
Amazing professor! Take him! He knows what he is teaching and he knows this audience. He has faith in his students which is everything a student can ask for and he is not hard on grading the essays.
Most fun I have had in a history class hands down. Through his lectures, and not the textbook though I did read it, I was able to learn, comprehend, and remember the topics. I would honestly suggest to my friends that they should take his class for an elective.
Dr. Dean is a really good and respected professor. However, his lectures get really long and will put many students to sleep. His material in the lectures cover things that aren't relevant to the quiz, which just wastes our time. His slides are 40-60 slides long and he lectures slow, then rushes at the end. Good professor, but classes are annoying.
He is extremely picky about every little thing you write. He will mark you down for a literary "pet peeve" that he has never previously mentioned. He expects you to write a 20 page paper, if you go over 20 he'll mark you down if you go under he'll mark you down it has to be 19-21 pages.
I have had Dr. Dean twice so far and he is amazing! He does a fantastic job of presenting history and genuinely cares abut his students. He gives you every opportunity to get an A and even shortens essays and assignments to help make it easier. There is a lot of reading but it is not bad, and if you are struggling he is readily available to help.
Dr. Dean is one of the best teachers here at Grand Canyon. He challenges all of his students, but the assigmements aren't too stressful because he gives warning usually two weeks in advance. I definitely suggest taking one of his classes.
This semester I have Dr. Dean for both HIS-144 and HIS-255, and he is one of the most supportive professors and will work with you so you can succeed in his classes. However, there is a lot of reading in both classes and assignments are more difficult in HIS-255 , but I do recommend him, he is an awesome professors
Dr. Dean is an all around nice guy. His lectures are interesting and he wants to share his life with his students and cares about their lives too. He made this class very easy and bearable.
great professor! Long Lectures but makes them interesting and we always got out early! Attendance matters but the class is enjoyable
Dean is by far one of if not the best professor I've ever had. He's tough on you but is always there to help you succeed and truly cares about your learning experience and success. His class is tough but h makes it fun at the same time. I highly recommend him for all students regardless of your major.
Take this professor for UNV, he makes the assignments & papers way easier than they seem like they'd be & is clear about what he's looking for. The class itself is not that hard, but I've heard of other professors making it harder & giving more work. Only downside is Dean lectures a ton, but he wants all his students to get A's. His class is easy.
Dr. Dean was my favorite professor I had my freshman year. He was super understanding and considerate that we had a life outside of his class. He is really good about making sure that you completely understand the assignments. We also ALWAYS got out of class early which was super nice! I highly encourage you to take his class if you can!
Dr. Dean is one of the only full-time faculty members in the history department. With that being said grades for papers come slow. However, I recommend him to any history major. This was the first class I have ever taken with Dr. Dean, but I knew I was in the right place when he received a standing ovation at the start of our first class.
Dr. Dean gives some of the most interesting lectures I have ever listened to! He treats his students like adults and respects your time, almost always letting the class out early. He works with you to make sure you understand assignments and as long as you show up and give a little effort he is a pretty easy grader, you'll get an A.
He is the most caring, respectable, and honest professor on this campus!! I had him for UNV106HN and am taking him again for History next semester. Hes super easy and often removes assignments/tests if he feels you already understand the material, so participate as a class, trust me, it will benefit you!! Visit his office hours too, hes cool
This is an honors course so the curriculum is dense and fast moving but Dr Dean makes it enjoyable and light. Each lecture is heavily student involved because Dean values the students growth in character. He is very respected and welcoming as a professor and as a human.
One of the most caring professors you will take. He actually invited our entire class to his house for Thanksgiving if we couldn't go home. He treats you as his "kids". Going to class is pretty important, so if you have to miss, communicate with him and he will work with you. Probably not necessary to read everything assigned but be familar with it
Absolutely LOVED Dr. Dean! Not a fan of the class itself, but he really made it more interesting than it should have been. He 100% cares about each one of his students and would do anything to make sure we all got an A. Such a nice guy in general-- he even opened his house up to his students for Thanksgiving if they had no where to go. Take him!!!
This course wasn't my favorite, but Professor Dean is the best professor to take it from. He cares a lot about his students and even after I finished the class, he still says hi to me every time I see him around campus. There's a lot of assigned reading and a few papers, but Professor Dean explains things well and keeps the class interesting.
Dr. Dean is a cool professor and made a class that I would not be very interested in interesting. You normally get out 15 min early and he changes assignments and tries to make the class as easy as possible (for the people who show up). I would recommend going to class as he changes the assignments in class. He has sneaky funny jokes too.
His class is a 100% lecture class. No talking, group work, or cell phone use whatsoever. He changes every assignment and paper the week before its due but makes it so much easier. He will turn a 1500 word paper into a 45 minute in-class worksheet. However, he does go on short political rants and is very uninformed when it comes to those. Easy A.
Professor Dean was very knowledgable and enthusiastic about American history. Although his class is lecture heavy, note taking is not really necessary. He shortens or changes almost every assignment to make it easier. Class attendance is required. Cell phones policy is enforced. I really enjoyed taking this class. He is a great professor!
I loved him and his class so much. He was one of the best professors that I have had. He would make assignments way easier than they needed to be. He has given me such high standards for other professors now. He has a strict no phone rule but it isn't that hard because he is an entertaining lecturer. A super nice guy & would take class again!
Honestly every professor should model their class after him. Easily one of my favorite professors to date. Easy fun class where you still learn, but never feel stressed out.
From what I understand, he is THE professor to get for this class. His teaching style is so fun and wants the best for all students. Probably the easiest UNV106HN professor on campus :)
Dr. Dean cares about and understands his students. His lectures are extremely entertaining, and he makes it so you actually want to show up to class just to see what he has planned. I would definitely recommend him to anyone taking UNV
Dr. Dean is the best professor I had in my first semester at GCU. His degrees are in history, but the honors college recruited him to teacher Ripple in the Pond and for that I am grateful. If you have Dr. Dean count yourself as blessed because he is amazing.
Dr. Dean is an awesome professor. He cares about his students and looks for every one of them to succeed. I learned a lot about ethics and you discuss a lot of relevant and interesting topics.
Professor Dean was awesome! He took participation every day. There's a lot of reading you have to do for this class. I had to buy maybe 3 books for this class and we barely used it. He grades pretty easy as long as you follow the rubric and assignment description. He teaches off of PowerPoints which he posts on LoudCloud.
He is very kind and supportive of students. He makes this intro class very enjoyable and worthwhile to go to. He tries to make the material more interesting and easier to understand. There are a few essays necessary for this class, and he lays out what needs to be written. I would recommend this professor for this class!
Dr. Dean is quite possibly the single best teacher I've ever had. He's easy-going enough to speak to, but stern enough to command respect. He's knowledgeable about every class he teaches and is clearly very passionate. He takes time to explain and elaborate on points if needed, and always has ideas for your essays. His lectures are engaging and fun
Dr. Dean is very helpful and makes sure that you know he will be available for you in the future and in class. If you build a good connection with him, he is someone that would be really helpful in the future. He genuinely cares about students and the material he is teaching.
Dr. Dean is an awesome teacher for his class instead of paper we did worksheets which was an awesome thing to do. His lecture are long but he make it interesting.
Honestly one of the best professors I have ever had! He's funny and tries to make class enjoyable. He modified assignments to make it easier for busy students to complete. He always cracked jokes and told good stories. 10/10!!!
Dr. Dean was a great professor who sometimes went off the beaten path to make class enjoyable and interesting. He was an easy grader and would sometimes make long essays into an in class project.
Dr. Dean is absolutely amazing. he is very knowledgeable about his topics and genuinely cares about his students. he rarely assigns homework and it is never busy work. i highly recommend this man!
Dean was my absolute favorite professor. I wasn't even a history major, but I wanted to take his class because he has been the kindest and most endearing professor I've had. He is incredibly funny and encouraging during his lectures, and he keeps you engaged throughout. His enthusiasm for history is matched only by his enthusiasm for cars.
LOVE HIM! I would take him for any class again in a heartbeat! He emphasizes at the beginning that the class should be the most stress-free. For the most part, he is right, but the end of the course gets a little heavy on essays and projects. He's an EASY grader, so the heavy load isn't too much of a problem.
Dr. Dean is amazing! Hes super caring towards his students and invited them to join him at basketball games or Thanksgiving if they have nowhere to go. Lots of lectures but on a variety of topics! The end of the semester brings a lot of assignments but hes overall a really relaxed grader and tells you exactly what he wants. 10/10 would recommend.
I absolutely loved having Dr. Dean as my professor. He is very knowledgable, truly cares for his students, and effectively communicates the ideas/themes of the curriculum that we learned. His passion for history and life is very clear within his lectures. I never missed class bc you do get particpation points for going and because he is the best!
Professor Dean has been one of my favorite professors at GCU. History has never been a subject of interest for me but he makes it very interesting! His classes are mostly lectures, but they are good lectures. He does not believe in essays!! We do worksheets in class instead. You are graded on coming to class, we have a sign-in sheet. Easy grader!
Professor Dean was by far one of the most enjoyable professors I've had, especially with a class that is pretty boring. He always engaged with different students at the beginning of class and genuinely cared about them. He teaches for the complete amount of time and doesn't allow phones, but makes the content fun to learn and makes hw super easy!
Really helpful!
He requires his students to go over the word count for every question of every assignment, and if you do not do this, he will dock points. In addition, he did not give us any essays which was nice, but he instead gave us "worksheets" where we had to go over the word count that was required for the essays that we would have been assigned.
I'm so glad I had Dr. Dean for HIS-144! Even though lectures were long, he added a lot of additional commentary to them, and often even let us out early. He replaced major papers with in-class assignments and provided resources and helpful advice for us. Wanted everybody to pass! He's the man. Ask him about his car club
Professor Dean was great in the beginning! No essays and lecture would go for the whole class. In my class turning online due to corona virus, he didn't know what he was doing. I failed the class due to him not giving proper resources and lack of proper due dates. If you have him for in-person class it's great, online no.
He was great and made sure the class was easy to understand for his students. Lecture heavy but would add commentary throughout it all. Replaced major essays with in-class assignments that were much simpler and more interesting.
Mr. Dean is one of my favorite professors at GCU. He not only makes his class fun and exciting but also truly cares about each and every one of his students. Mr. Dean also simplifies the course material down to make it easier for everyone. He is not only a great professor but also just a great person. I highly recommend Professor Dean to everyone!!
Dr. Dean was a great professor. He has a deep understanding of history and he makes lectures interesting. He definitely cares about his students, he even offered for any of us to have Thanksgiving with him and his family if we were unable to go home. I would highly recommend taking him if you can.
Ive always heard great things about Dean and now, I can attest to those great things. In his class, hell lecture most of the time, but hes very fun to listen to. The book is VITAL to passing the class. Hes totally on your side and wants you to do well. Do the work and youll get an A...I wouldve if I didnt miss an assignment :/
Dr. Dean is a very caring teacher. He is very knowledgable in history. Though there is a lot of information, Dr. Dean explains it really well. He actually cares about his students and he is very kind. He is an easy grader and he explains the assignments well. There is no final exam and the assignments are easy. I would definitely recommend him!
Professor Dean is an amazing professor and the lectures for his class is interesting. But be aware of the HW... it is easy but very time consuming. For HW you'll have to write a minimum of 200-300 words for each answer and there are like 5-10 questions. But overall he cares for his students. If you do the HW and participate, you can easily pass.
I love Dr. Dean. He made history SO interesting and is very passionate about his topic. He is difficult to get a hold of outside of class but is very clear with answers when asked questions in class. Quizzes are open book, but I suggest filling out the study guide and you will easily get As and Bs every time. 9/10 recommend.
Dr. Dean was a good professor. His class was accessible for someone like me who does not really find a great amount of passion towards the subject. He gave us study guides for all the quizzes at the beginning of the semester. These were incredibly useful tools to use. I also think the assignments although sometimes a bit long, were easy enough.
He was so passionate about what he was teaching. The lectures were very long and thorough. He is so helpful and kind. I would highly recommend him.
Professor Dean is incredibly organized and passionate about what he teaches. Lectures are long yet thorough. You will have essentially one worksheet and one quiz due every two weeks. However, they are long and tedious. Additionally, professor Dean is very kind and is always willing to answer questions.
Dont get me started about this man. I absolutely loved his class always very engaging with storytelling tried to make history less boring. Only downside is doesnt allow electronics besides laptop for the lecture but overall very nice man and had great IAs
Dr. Dean was a great professor and gave great lectures. As long as you do the assignments and quizzes you can get an easy A in this class. All writing assignments should be 200-300 words. The textbook which is provided online and PowerPoint lectures are very helpful tools you can use. The quizzes are super easy as well.
Dr. Dean was an intelligent, inspiring, and thoughtful professor. He is very passionate about the subject of history and that's clear in his lectures. I'm very interested in history but I would think that his lectures would be just as interesting to anyone else. The way he presents keeps you curious, engaged, and surprised.
I am not a huge history fan, but he made the class quite enjoyable and interesting! His lectures go pretty long, but he always lets the class out at least 15 minutes early. There is an assignment and quiz every few weeks, but if you go to class you will know exactly what he wants for each assignment. There is no final as well for the class.
Professor Dean is the professor you want for this class. There is more work than in another UNV class, but he will teach you important concepts and open your mind to ideas that are not presented in other sections. There are a lot of long lectures, but they can often be inspiring. He will work with you to improve your grade if you are diligent
My mom had texted me about the passing of my aunt, and he called me out in front of the class saying why are you on your phone did somebody die? I told him somebody had passed away and he said well I'm still taking away all your participation points. "you should've taken it outside next time". Mind you I didn't get below a 98% on any tests/papers.
A great professor, understanding, and truly cares about the course. A really nice person with a big heart.
Dr. Dean is absolutely phenomenal. His lectures often felt more like story time than an actual lecture. Some assignments were done in class which was a great help. Very friendly and social. He wants his students to succeed and you can tell. He is able to answer almost any question asked, extremely knowledgeable in his field.
Honestly, take him if you can! This is an easy class to pass as long as you submit your assignments (papers ranging from 750-2000 words at a minimum at this point in time). Some homework is completed as in class assignments instead. Participation is recorded in each class by a physical sign-in sheet.
Dr. Dean is quite the character and an entertaining guy. He is really approachable and will tell you exactly how he grades. He does the curriculum his own way to be more useful to the students and the changes are really helpful. And his chosen lecture topics were actually super interesting. Do the readings, you'll learn a lot.
Dr Dean is great professor and person, would love to have him for my other history classes
Dr. Dean is a great professor. You will not be using technology in class which can get very aggravating sitting there listening to him lecture the whole class. All quizzes are online and taken when you want which is nice and there is no midterm or final. A super easy class just insanely boring and hard to sit there. He makes you sign in every class
Dr. Dean is one of my favorite professors I've had a GCU. He is really focused on making sure the students actually learn and can remember the material presented, while also trying to make things as easy as possible for everyone. Super helpful and caring to students who need advice; he gave me really useful advice on grad school. Hilarious too!
Dean is great and liked by most- he does lecture for a majority of class but I never found myself counting down the minutes. His homework is easy and completely covered in class, and he's very chill with late homework (not extremely late but a couple of days wiggle room). He's witty and knows his facts, and I enjoyed his class- and I hate history:)
Dr. Dean was very engaging and provided extremely informational lectures. While attendance is necessary and technology is not permitted, he modified the assignments so they could be completed with ease. He's very interested in what he teaches and has much knowledge of the Renaissance era due to his travels and education.
Dr. Dean is such a knowledgeable and enthusiastic professor. Even though we had a lot of lectures in the class, he kept them interesting and kept us involved. He does all of the homework assignments in class, so if you are there and participate you will get 100% on them. No tests for Renaissance and Reformation.
Taking this 400 level class with Dr. Dean was no challenge. His lectures are very detailed and he is extremely knowledgeable, particularly because he has experience in this time period. Dr. Dean grades for participation and does not allow technology, but I enjoyed the classes and the way he lectures. He takes awhile to grade assignments.
Very lengthy lectures but overall easy class and great dude.
Dean is amazing! He is so funny and he makes learning fun! His lectures could get lengthy at times but his knowledge on history is amazing. He made class fun! Highly recommend Dr. Dean. You can tell he loves his students!
Dr. Dean was so great! I have never met a professor who knows more about History than this man! He does tend to switch assignments up from what they are posted on halo as, so keep that in mind. I would reccomend showing up to class 100% of the time, because sometimes he gives credit for assifnments just for showing up to class. Definetly recommend!
Dr. Dean truly cares about his students and wants to see them succeed; not only throughout college but for the long haul. I wish I could have him as a professor for every class. He is very knowledgeable and has lengthy lectures, but nonetheless, they are engaging and fun. Participation matters; show up, stay engaged, and have an amazing semester!
Has very long lectures which lots of slides, but no notes required. This class did not do any tests or exams, only quizzes which were super easy. Homework was a little time consuming because of the word requirement, but not difficult. He was easy to understand and went over the material throughly making it easy to complete homework and quizzes.
Dr. Dean made HIS-144 very tolerable! You can tell he genuinely loves what he does and is happy to see his students every single time. Class is extremely lecture heavy and can be boring, but overall this course with Dean is a breeze.
Professor Dean is a great professor and person! So full of knowledge! Not much homework, or work in general.
Dr. Dean, works really hard to make this class easy. There is a lot of big word assignments, but he posts a lot of sources to help do them. He has a lot of knowledge about history. He has a super strict phone policy which is annoying but other than that he's a really good professor.
Dr. Dean was a great professor, though his lectures were long and sometimes hard to sit through. For all assignments you have 2 weeks to complete and same with 1 online quiz per 2 weeks that is taken on your own time. If you like to be on your phone all class or not show up, this isn't the professor for you. Attendance is a big part of your grade.
Dr. Dean is amazing. The lectures do feel long at times, but he is very knowledgeable and tries to make them interesting. Dr. Dean like to sprinkle in some humor to his lectures as well. You can tell that he loves his job, and he genuinely cares for his students. Would take highly highly recommend him. No exams, tests, or finals either.
I was unimpressed. The reviews made me optimistic and I was severely let down. David Deans phone policy is extreme, one time he catches you=participation lost for day. Two times=lost for entire unit, three times= loose participation for the year. I didn't appreciate his lecture heavy class, pretty boring lectures that last the entire class period.
Really enjoyed this teacher and their feedback given in essays.
Dr. Dean's lectures can feel long, but his passion for history shines through. Stay engaged, use unstuck AI for study prep, and you'll do great in this class.
