As far as Chem 105 goes, he is probably the easiest professor, it's not an easy subject. There is very little petty memorization of tables etc. it's all provided on the tests. He usually can't finish lectures because there's so much info. But, go to recitation and study sessions and you should do fine. A good TA is very helpful!
Let's face it, Chemistry is HARD! Even with this fact I'm able to enjoy Chemistry because of Dearden. He cares about his students and tries to be fair. A lot of your grade depends on the tests which kind of stinks, but everyone does so bad that he usually grades it on some sort of a curve so don't freak out if you get a bad grade on a test.
Chemistry is hard. His tests are also hard, but he curves them major so you end up getting a good grade on them anyways. He likes to blow up balloons full of explosive gases in class. A way nice guy too.
Not too hard of a prof. just a hard class
This was a very hard class. Each test was harder than the one before it. However the grading curve was more than fair. A good TA really helps and a lot of resources are available if you need help. Professor Dearden was a good professor, the lectures were mostly good and his demonstrations were fun, lots of explosions.
Dearden is really helpfull as far as the students are concerned. He's not one of those professors who say, basically, sink or swim. He tries to give you a chance to exceed in a really hard subject. His tests are killer, but if everyone sucks he'll drop the C+ cutoff point. try to get a good TA.
Dearden is an excellent professor. He knows the subject well and really cares about his students' education. He is willing to help outside of class and grades very nicely. The tests are hard (but that is true for all chem 105 tests).
Deardon is an excellent teacher; he sets lectures up on blackboard. If you want to do well, go over the lecture for the day before class, if possible, a week in advance. He is always there to help...be sure to get a good TA, and if you can, go to different recitations; each seem to teach differently. If possible, take 101 with it. (know vocab)
His tests were crazy hard. If you think about each question then it really isn't to bad. He blows stuff up every lecture. You have to have a good TA or you'll be in trouble. Just learn the material extremley well.
Nice man, he brings in church stuff a lot. He is not the easiest man to follow and you better read the book or don't bother going to class. The department makes the tests and he does't have anything to do with them. Lab is where you will get your answers. There is a quiz every day of class so you can't skip. This isn't easy and you better take notes
This class was full of good information but I ended up going just for the attendance point. I enjoyed the lectures, but got more out of taking notes from the text. The tests were very specific.
He is a really cool teacher. He loves to blow stuff up. The main thing is to review the lecture slides a lot-before and after class.
boring class, but that's not his fault. tests are hard, but that's not his fault either. lectures are pretty interesting (and that's coming from someone who loathes this subject). definitely the best professor to take this class from.
he was a wondeful teacher and made sitting through lectures, and learning about physical science really interesting! He explained things very well, and his power points gave us all the important information for the tests. Go to class to take the quizzes, and study hard for the tests. Know how to apply the different concepts to situations rather then memorizing them. Overall, i really enjoyed his teaching style, and the fact that he liked to blow things up.
Dr. Dearden is entertaining and fun. He really likes to blow stuff up!
Dr. Dearden was clear and pleasant. He is willing to give you help and answer questions. He also included gospel topics.
He took over after Prof. Jones was given leave and I am very grateful. I really enjoyed his class. He likes to blow stuff up. Tries to answer as many questions as possible. I went to the TAs after the lab the first few times and that helped a lot with understanding details. Not too bad of a class. I learned a lot about how the earth works.
PLEASE take PS100 from Dr. Dearden. He is the only choice, really.
He is a hard teacher. Sometimes his slides are a little confusing. you do have to study a lot for the test. But overall his nice.
He has good lectures. He blows everything up and likes to joke around. He's my favorite science teacher I've ever had.
He is a great guy, but makes it tough, but all chemistry classes are tough. You have to study hard for the tests, and some questions aren't the best, but overall I learned a lot from him.
Dr. Dearden overall is a good guy. He has sense of humor which is nice. But he just didn't do too well at teaching chemistry. He tries, there is no doubt about that, but he is very fuzzy and does not teach that well. He does make lectures interesting, however, by blowing stuff up whenever possible. If you are ok learning stuff on your own take him.
Dr. Dearden is an excellent professor. Chem 105 is a hard class no matter who you take it from but dearden gives you the best shot at an A. He was always helpful with questions and wanted you to succeed. Take 105 from Dearden.
He is a very nice guy, but I wasn't a fan of his lectures. His lecture slides were always confusing, and usually put slides up there that we didn't even need to know.(In that case, as if anyone cares). You learn the most in recitation, and on your online homework by yourself. His tests are killer. Very hard class, but he's a nice guy, approachable
Way tough but worth it. I learned a bunch. Explosions are his forte but he's willing to answer questions too. His tests are tricky but at least his weekly micro-exams (which you can retake as many times as you want) prepare you if you put effort into them. A few things could have been explained better but I enjoyed chem 105 from dearden.
i tried to ask him a question in his office once and i kind of felt blown off. but, that might be because he was having a VERY busy day and frankly didn't have the time to answer my question. he made a hilarious joke once about how his daughter is a sophomore at BYU and doesn't want to date because she thinks that all RM's want to get married.
He's a pretty good professor. Nice Guy. Funny. Good Explosions. He teaches well, but Chem 105 is a beast, you need to put in the time on your own. If you work hard you'll do okay. Or you might fail. Keep in mind its possible to study and still get an F. Micro Exams are a great tool if you use them.
This is a hard class that requires a lot of time outside of class if you want to do well. I didn't do much at all outside of class and was able to pass, but not with a great grade. He's a good teacher and is really nice. He also blows stuff up most days.
This class has taught me tons but it was not with out lots of work, (as a college class should be.) The times I went to his office he was very helpful and did not treat me like an idiot. the lectures are interesting and how many other classes get to blow stuff up? Make sure you read everything and review and you'll do fine.
Good teacher, willing to hepl, get a good TA!!! Don't give up after the third Macro exam, the whole class probably did bad. There is a really good curve. Make sure to go to RL's and DR's and do the BR's most of your grade depends on it.
It's a hard class. It's a good idea to study up and/or get a foundation for the course. Dr.Dearden is a very nice, very helpful teacher. He'll meet with you and do anything he can to help you prepare for his extremely difficult exams. I thought I'd fail, but I stuck through and got a C-. Effort pays off, even if you don't have much experience.
The reason that this class was so hard is because there was an unbelievable work load. A lot of the work didn't really help, but was just time consuming. It was as if he thought this was the only class anybody had. Take it from somebody else.
Dr. Dearden was a very good teacher and made everything very clear to me. I don't understand why so many people had a hard time in his class - he provides you with all the information and instruction you need to do well. I would definitely take another class with Dr. Dearden.
not that bad of a class. i enjoyed it a lot. make sure you understand what he's talking about in lecture, because everythign builds on itself. i went to his office once, and i think he was having a bad day.. he didn't really help me very much.
love him
He's funny and spiritual, and his lectures are always clear to me. I love his class and his style of teaching. He's a genuinely nice guy, and its my favorite class of the day. I'd love more of his classes
He isn't the most exciting speaker, but he does like to blow things up, which is definitely a plus. He is very helpful and easy to understand. It's pretty easy to fall asleep during a lecture that doesn't involve explosions, but if you read the text, you can easily catch up with the material. Excellent class, very interesting subject matter.
I do not feel that the class is very organized. Most of the time when I go to my recitation lab, we are given material that has not been covered yet. We jumped around instead of going in some type of order. Science courses require lots of work but having a class thats organized helps. I wish I took it from someone else.
Dr. Dearden is very good and cares about his students a lot. The class can be quite challenging, especially if you fall behind. However, he is perfect for those going further in chemistry - he will prepare you more than any other professor. I highly recommend-just be prepared to spend 1-2 hours doing something for this class nearly every day.
Dr. Dearden is the man! He teaches so well that you understand everything you need to. His tests are a bit hard but if you study well, do all the assignments, micro exams and practice sheets, you'll get a solid A! And he curves the final, plus gives you chance to drop one of your lowest scores in mid terms! TAKE IT! you'll love it!
Dr. Dearden is a way good guy and really cares about his students, but I think he makes the course a little more difficult than it needs to be. There is way too much busy work that interferes with your time to actually rehearse the concepts you may not understand. Tests are hard, but what chem test isn't? Just too much hw and way too time consuming
Dearden was awesome! Always willing to help anyone with questions, and I thought his tests were fairly easy. Lots of Hydrogen/Butane balloon explosions which is always fun. Chem 105 was amazing he is a way cool and hilarious guy take it from him if you can!!!
Dr. Dearden is a great guy and does everything he can to make one of BYU's hardest (and most failed) classes enjoyable. Tests are challenging but his lectures are very helpful and he is always willing to answer questions. I would recommend him for CHEM105
Dr. Dearden is an AMAZING teacher! He cares for his students' success and is quick to reply to emails. This class is a lot of work, but if you do all that you're asked to (i.e. assigned readings before lecture, homework, etc) then you will walk out with a solid A. He makes the most-failed class at BYU enjoyable! My best advice: DO NOT FALL BEHIND!
Good teacher, but intense class. Tons of homework, but if you do it, its worth the effort.
Dr. Dearden is a very invested teacher. I really enjoyed his class, even though it was pretty tough. If you are very diligent and hard working, you can do fine. He gives you many opportunities to redeem yourself, and a 3X5 card is allowed on all tests. Take from Dearden.
Great teacher I just don't get Chemistry! Really tries to help students out.
Very challenging course, but I liked it. Dr. Dearden is an awesome guy, and really cares about his students. He wants you to succeed. Very time consuming course, so buckle up. Provides lots of opportunites for practice, and learning, so USE THEM. awesome guy.
The jokes about his daughter are the best...
Dearden is great! He is such a nice guy and he makes his lectures interesting. Chem 105 is a lot of work, that is a given but Dearden really wants everybody to succeed. He is great!!
Dr Dearden is by far the best chem 105 teacher! Dr Shirts subbed for our lecture one time and I had no stinking clue what the man was talking about. Don't get me wrong Shirts is a genius he just is really really hard to follow. Chem 105 is a really hard class if you don't stay on top of it so you may end up not liking any teacher. Dr Dearden understands it's tough and does a good job of being clear and keeping attention. Also very fair with grades
Dr. Dearden is clear and knows his stuff. Very fair when it comes to grades. If you get behind, good luck catching up. I'm retaking Chem 105 because I allowed myself to get behind halfway through the semester. You really will do your best in the class if you follow his syllabus to a tee. Material isnt too hard, just incredibly time consuming.
If you go to class, do the assignments and got to recitation its not that bad. He's easy to listen to in lecture and likes to blow stuff up... so that's a plus. Has lots of opportunities for mercy.
Professor Dearden is an excellent teacher. The class requires a lot of time and is not for the faint of heart. I took it just for fun, because all the Pre-Med wine about it. I did just fine. Do not expect the grad to be given to you on a silver platter. This a meritocracy. If you want the grade then work for it.
Dearden has a real knack for taking difficult chemical concepts and explaining them on a simple level. I've TA'd many chemistry classes and he is one of the best at clearly explaining concepts. His class is fair but requires effort. The test will roast you if you don't study. He also does an excellent job of showing students WHY the subject matters.
Dr. Dearden is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is incredibly genuine and truly cares about his student's grades. He is a fair grader. The only reason his test were so difficult was because all of the sections of chem111 had the same tests. They are killer! Be prepared to work but definitely take it from Dearden
This was his first time teaching 111, but he did a good job. Tests are the same for all 111 classes, and they are brutal. Homework is due every friday and there is a lot so dont procrastinate, its hard. Dearden is awesome he made an effort to know everyone's name and he blows things up all the time (it makes the whole class worth it) haha
wow. hardest class ever. dr. dearden is the BEST!!! really. his first time teaching 111 and he did a great job. so nice and i felt like he really cared. i signed up for 105 and 111 and decided to take 111 cuz he was so nice and helpful. if i were to take it again i'd get sevy. then probably dearden. and he's only getting better the more he teaches.
Very passionate about chemistry. Wants you to learn concepts and not just how to regurgitate the necessary information. Difficult class. Raises average GPA of class to meet chem department standards so this "curve" of sorts helps everyone. Can be slightly boring in lecture, but he makes up for it when he blows things up (usually twice a week)
Love Dr. Dearden! He is so sweet and funny and loves to blow things up! Demos are the best part of class and for the most part he does at least one everyday. The material is difficult and he sometimes doesn't explain things very well and takes a long time to answer just one question during review days, but overall he is a great professor!
For the hardest class at BYU, Dr Dearden definitely makes your life easier. He's really great, kind of geeky/nerdy, and totally wonderful. This is my second time in Chem 105, and he's making it a lot clearer. He really makes an effort to make everyone understand the material, even the harder stuff.
If you like stuff watching stuff blow up, you will probably like Dearden. If you get bored after the first time he blows something up like me, you will probably not like him. In-lecture was nearly pointless. If Dearden is the best Chem 105 prof. I don't want to know how the others are.
I took Chem105 during my first semester at BYU. It was my hardest class, but it ended up being my favorite. Dr. Dearden is great and gives students every possible chance to succeed if they try. He is a phenomenal teacher. Lectures are always interesting and he is very well prepared. He doesn't talk super fast and it is very easy to understand him.
I'm one of those people who will never understand chemistry. The class was lots of work, extremely difficult, and frustrating. And when I changed my major halfway through the semester I learned that I couldn't taken 101 instead, so it ended up being completely worthless. He does blow stuff up a lot.
Great teacher, in the truest sense of the word. He is super nerdy and knows everything about chemistry, I could rarely ask a question that really stumped him. Very approachable more in to the semester, affable. Tough class, he's pretty hard line, but it motivates people instead of feeding them useless stuff they'll just forget later. Great teacher!
Great professor. He really knows what he is talking about and if you go ask him for help, he's more than happy to assist you. His lectures are pretty clear, and he makes an effort to make sure most people in the class understand before he moves on. Chem 111 is a hard class. You have to work but Dr. Dearden in an excellant professor.
Brilliant Class. Dr. Dearden knows what he is talking about, and truly cares for his students. He is enthusiastic and humble, very entertaining, and instills a love for the subject. The class is hard, so unless you're up for a challenge, take 105. But, if you want to know and understand chemistry, take Dr. Dearden. Very gospel-centered too!
Reading the book is essential to do the homework and understand the material. He ties in the gospel which was really cool. Sweet and smart guy, really takes his students success to heart. Be prepared to teach yourself out of book a lot, go to TA lab for help and put in a lot hours outside of class. Interesting class though!
Chem 111 is a BEAST! Regardless of the professor, this class requires about 14 hours a week outside of class to do labs and homework. Dearden is a caring man who is approachable, and covers the material fairly well. The TA will become your savior. Tests are brutal. tough, tough, tough, tough
Dr. Dearden is a great lecturer, but Chem 111H is incredibly difficult. The tests are challenging, but Dr. Dearden does what he can to help. He is humble, sweet and loves his students. EXPECT EXPLOSIONS! He blows something up at least twice a week
As chemistry professors go Dr. Dreaden is very good. The material we cover is difficult and the tests are hard, but I never got tired of gong to class. He has a funny sense of humor which kept things lively. He really likes to blow stuff up.
This class is fast paced but VERY do-able. Especially with Dearden! If you get a good TA and go in to talk to Dearden you will do fine in this class. DEFINITELY take it from him before any other professor.
Professor Dearden does a good job, he is a really nice guy and willing to talk with you. The assignments are very fair, it is the exams that drop your grade so much but they are department-wide you'll have the same exams no matter who your professor is. From what I heard he's probably your best bet. Your recitation TA makes a huge different, do your best to get a good TA.
Dearden is your best bet. He explains concepts well, but does expect you to come to class prepared. Test averages usually in the mid 60s. I was pleased with the ending curve. Honestly though, the TAs are vital, more so than the professor. If you go to the TA lab and get clarification on anything you don't understand then the class isn't that bad.
After the many horror stories that I heard about this class, I was pleasantly surprised. Dearden is caring and humble and explains concepts well. The TAs for Chem 105 are awesome as well. Be sure to attend recitation and take it seriously. Take advantage of the resources available to you, and this class is very doable.
Last semester I took Chem 101 and came out of the class with a B. If your not at all familiar with chem thats my recomendation before jumping into 105. Especially if youre shooting for an A in the class. I ended up with an A-. The class is very similar to chem 101 but at a much faster pace so if you dont understand the basics you may fall behind.
This class was probably my most challenging one, yet it was also my favorite. Dr. Dearden was funny, captivating, smart, likeable, and spiritual -- I strongly recommend him. This class takes a lot of time and effort, but if you're dedicated you can do well. Exams are somewhat difficult, but you can gain a third of the points lost if you do reworks.
Dr. Dearden is a great teacher! Chem 111 is a really difficult class, but if you put in the time and do the work it will be great. The TA's are extremely helpful and you will need to use them especially for the labs and homework.
This was definitely a hard class, but Dearden is a pretty good teacher. I would definitely take it from him - the homework assignments are reasonable and TA's are helpful. Make sure to read the assigned reading. It definitely helps with in class quizzes and the exams, which are impossibly hard. There's a nice curve once the course is completed!
Dearden is one of the best professor I have ever had. I had him winter semester. His is the most helpful teacher ive ever seen. He would let me come into his office almost at anytime. He was super respectful and never made me feel dumb for asking questions. This class is tough but if you do everything youre suppose to do you will be fine!
This class is super tough but Dearden lets you know up front the grading policy and what to expect. He teaches on our level and doesn't ramble or go off on tangents like Asplund. Really nice and does awesome explosions and demonstrations in class. Definitely recommend! He really helped me understand the hard material. Extra credit and a curve.
I am very glad that I took this class from Dr. Dearden. It is a hard class regardless of what professor you had, but Dr. Dearden made it easier by being so helpful. He responds to e-mails quickly and addresses student concerns (such as moving a test back) while still being fair to the other sections. He has a strong testimony of Christ.
He is confusing sometimes and goes off on tangents. He assigned homework without going over how to do it. He is so much fun but this class is hard just in general!! Tests are not what you learn in class. I would just take regular physical science because its easier.
Expects you to put time and effort in, but is always there to help if you are doing your part.
This class is an honors class for a reason (it's a lot of work). However, I loved it and would take it again. Dr. Dearden is very passionate and respectful. I feel like I learned so much more than I would in a regular physics class!
Univ 292 has two sections-- the one I took is affectionately known as the "Aliens class." It's engaging, informative, and incredibly cool. Decent amount of reading required, and college-level work needed on exams. TAs and Professors always willing to help.
He's a great teacher and all around great guy. He really is patient with every student and has clear, organized powerpoints. You'll need to learn some things on your own, and visit the TA lab probably more than you want to, but anything he taught in class I felt like I could do easily. Still a hard class and 5hrs/wk of various types of homework.
You will do a lot of reading in this class, but they are very interesting SciFi readings. I honestly didn't put a whole lot of effort into this class, but I enjoyed it a lot. If you are doing the honors program and have to take UNIV 292, take it from him. Hopefully he does the aliens theme again.
I took the Univ292 honors class. Absolutely stunning lectures. I cannot more highly recommend taking that class from this prof. I know it won't be the same every semester, but if he ever does anything related to space and aliens again, jump on it! It was an amazingly well-designed course.
This class was super disorganized. He would talk about all this random science stuff in class, but not actually explain it, just briefly go over it in the slides. Then he'd assign homework with all these crazy science problems that we had never even talked about before! The tests were hard, again because he did not explain any of the science stuff.
Homework is great, it reflects the exams however it is not graded. He will ask if you did it or not and you will get credit for it that way. Be sure to take notes and focus on what he says and you'll be fine. He's the best.
Kind, caring, loves to teach, the only downside were the tests-almost every 3 weeks plus a final. The bright side is that the questions came almost directly out of the textbook. Homework is based on the honor system, and there are easy in-class iClicker quizzes. Easy A. GREAT G.E. teacher.
Awesome prof, and the class wasn't too bad. Use the TAs and other resources, go to the reviews, etc. Turn your homework in on time and it's pretty easy. Tests are a little on the hard side, so make sure you read the question really thoroughly.
Obviously Chem 111 isn't easy but Dearden loves to blow stuff up and make class fun. Also very organized and head of department so he makes the tests... SO being in his class is good
I am currently in Dr. Dearden's class. I think he is a very merciful and caring man. He also knows what is important to talk about in his lectures, which makes it all the more important to come to class ;)
Because the course is heavily regulated by the department, it does not matter so much who you take it from. The homework, tests, and grading is the same across all sections. That being said, I really enjoyed the lectures. Dr. Dearden knows what he is talking about. Just be sure to read beforehand and bring your questions to the lecture.
The class was very difficult, but Dr. Dearden kept his lectures engaging and easy to follow. He really likes explosions, so that was fun. The tests are hard since there was no multiple choice, but we were allowed to do reworks for a quarter of the points back. Do all your homework, use the TA labs and review sessions, and you'll be fine.
It's a hard class. He challenges you, but I never once felt helpless or stupid. It's all a matter of how much work you're willing to put in. He wants to see you succeed, and his office hours are worth gold. There will be many explosions/ demonstrations in class. They're awesome. Go to lectures.
Dr. Dearden is a living legend. I am forever thankful for the growth I experienced in Chem 111. He will make you work and if you accept his challenge with determination you will get the result you want.
This was a research credit that I did with Dr. Dearden. I appreciated how accessible he was during the day and how quickly he responded to my e-mails. I almost always saw him teaching students from his chemistry classes during office hours. A great guy.
Dr. Dearden is amazing. I felt like he cared so much about his students' success. I loved coming to class every day; Dr. Dearden is a phenomenal lecturer and he is great at answering questions. He is a spiritual giant; I often felt my chemistry class was more spiritually enriching than my religion class. One of BYU's finest. Highly recommend!!
Dr. Dearden is amazing! He does his best to make this class the best experience possible. With that said however, know that this class is quite tough. It is meant to be a weeder class for the chemistry department majors. It is very test heavy and the homework isn't easy. But Dr. Dearden makes it doable if you follow his lead.
Dr. Dearden is very capable and intelligent, but I had an extremely difficult time following his lectures. He goes on tangents a lot and does not seem to be able to "dumb down" the material or explain it adequately. If you are naturally good at chem, I suppose he'd be fine, but I would recommend taking another professor who is better at explaining
I loved Dr. Dearden's lectures. He's super open to questions and more than happy to talk with students during office hours. It was a hard class so definitely use the TAs too. The material was confusing sometimes, but half the time Dr. Dearden had a demo ready to blow something up in lecture, so we got lots of experience feeling the enthalpy.
Dr. Dearden is an awesome professor, always ready with a demo to make the class more intriguing. He teaches a hard class, but is great at building on the material to help you understand. Its not an easy class, but definitely the best to take it from. He gives random spiritual thoughts too, which I loved.
Dearden was a great professor and very kind. He really loves chemistry and blowing stuff up. In order to do well GO TO TA HOURS FOR HELP ON THE HOMEWORK. The homework can be difficult (and often a little different from lecture content) and reflect the tests really well so if you do well on the homework, youll likely do well on the tests.
Dearden loves doing some type of explosion so go in person! The main thing youll want to pay attention to during lectures are the practice problems. When doing readings outside of class, try to understand the concepts around equations on the equation sheet. The TAs are your best friend for this class when it comes to completing hw assignments.
He's a little rough around the edges, but truly and honestly a great professor with lots of teaching experience (and enjoys doing explosions in class). I felt prepared for the exams and the frequent but short exams helped a lot. Encourages questions all the time, students just have to be comfortable cutting him off because he doesn't pause much.
The class was very demo heavy, which was fun, but required me to teach myself everything. Professor messes up a lot in his lectures which is confusing. Assumes you know more than you do. Thinks you can make assumptions on things he hasnt explained. CONSIDER A DIFFERENT PROFESOR FOR THIS CLASS.
Dr. Dearden is a very nice person but that can only get you so far. He is very lecture heavy however if you don't attend lecture he posts the slides. The tests are VERY difficult and cover many things that were never discussed in lecture so be prepared. The homework is impossible without TA's, they will be your best friend throughout this class.
Dr. Dearden is an absolutely brilliant scientist and a great teacher. The class itself is not easy, but Dr. Dearden does great work in preparing students for tests and homework. He displayed an obvious appreciation for questions and curiosity, and he was always willing to help us in any way he could.
Each week we had written and online homework. Both were difficult and typically required TA help. If you have not taken AP chem or another college level chemistry class, I would really not recommend starting here. I had only taken high school chemistry and it was hard to keep up with the kids who had already taken a lot of chemistry classes before.
Chem 111 is a really hard class. Dr. Dearden is clearly passionate about what he teaches and loves doing demonstrations. He cares a lot about his students and about the gospel. I had only one semester of chemistry before this class, and I struggled a lot. Do the readings and talk to the TAs!
Probably my favorite professor in the entire department. Incredibly nice and willing to take as much time as needed to help you learn something outside of class.
This class made me really want to learn more about science to the point it made me change my major. He loves his students and wants them to learn. Sometimes it's hard to get concepts, but if you go to the TA lab the TAs will help with everything you need to know. The reviews I will admit don't help much, and the tests can be very hard.
Make sure to attend class because he does in class quizzes for attendance but he tells you the answers. I am terrible at chemistry and physics but this class made me feel smart. He lets you bring one sheet of notes to each test and the TAs are amazing. Definitely take tis class to fulfill the GE requirement.
This is the class that made me switch out of chemical engineering. The lectures were not only boring, but totally unhelpful. Expect to teach yourself all of the material.
Dr. Dearden is a caring and competent chemistry professor. His lectures weren't the most engaging or clear (I would recommend Dr. Sevy) but I attended his class all semester and was able to be successful nonetheless.
I took Chem 111 from him and he was such a good teacher. You definitely have to show up because if you try to study the slides, it doesn't make sense.
Dr. Dearden is a kind person. This class will take up all of your time and sanity. Effort is not enough to get a good grade, you need to attend hours of TA help just to complete the homework. The tests are difficult and worth almost everything. This class is unnecessarily hard, and not a reflection of chemical engineering. Take CHEM 105 instead.
