If you study then things will go alright, otherwise you might struggle
This guy is a complete jerk. I was ran over by a truck on the way to my Comm. test and he wouldn't allow me to make it up because he doesn't accept any excuses. If you get a good lab TA than it will help.
This class sucked, and his book is horrible and you can't sell it back and he has the worst attendance policy ever and the lecture is boring and pointless. And the quizzes were awful. Pray for a good lab TA to make it worthwhile.
Extremely boring class. The tests can either be insanely hard or easy depending on what "version" you get. My lab TA was awful which did not help anything. Demers also makes up a lot of facts to prove his "brilliant" points. And the bo
Not very helpful and promotes his book a lot
Boring egomaniac who refers to himself in third-person seeking desperate students who'll buy his pathetic, unedited, EXPENSIVE, politically-motivated books to fuel his "scholarly" career. NOT A CHANCE! If you have a life, run away screaming.
Boring lecture class, and my lab TA lost a lot of my papers. I wouldn't take this class, but unfortunately it's required for com majors.
WORST CLASS EVER! the only reason he still has a job is because of all the royalties he makes off of students required to buy his textbook. Boring and pointless lectures followed by terrible labs
There really is no way to study for his quizzes. The questions are completely random and I did not learn a thing in the class. If it wasn't for the extra credit for going to class I would have never gone. If you can...take it from someone else.
He is horrible! If you can buy a copy of his book from a friend, do it, you can't sell back a draft copy. The entire class is based on his liberal opinions, supported by his own editorials, in book version. Avoid him if you can!
avoid him!! waste of time and energy...TA's are also very useless. exams have nothing to do with what we have learned...someone go to Dean or something & fire him!:)
This class is a joke...he is closed minded, only giving lectures on his opinions. The books for the class, which are his work, are faulty and hard to sell back. Just read the material and study and you'll pass; I didn't go for 1 1/2 months and got a B+!
Dr. Demers needs to incorporate other theories (Besides mass media as a social control function) into his course and require a book that is not $90 and written by himself in draft form. Don't buy the media essays book if you can help it.

his class is a joke. it is completly worthless too take notes in his class, none of the notes show up on the exam. his TA's are worthless as well. all most all of them are foreigners, who can not clearly speak english. the class is a nightmare.
great teacher, easy.
Demers is a total idot who gives his lectures on what he thinks is right, his lectures are biased and worthless overall you can't avoid him if you are a com major so basically you just have to suck it up and pretend to care.
He was very biased and liked to **** about the spokane review, and for someone who had never read it before, things don't really make sense. His TAs could hardly speak english making "communication" a little hard. 2 words: SOCIAL CONTROL.
Definately wishing I hadn't taken this class. T/F exams? On opinions? Yeah, too bad he is so biased that reasonable people WILL bomb the exams. Avoid him like ebola. DO NOT TAKE THIS AS A GER COURSE!

This guy is an idiot. I know you have to take 101 but be prepared...He's completly biased and if you're conservative you'll hate him
he sucks
Easy class, but the information presented is boring and will put you to sleep. Also, a lot of information from this class has nothing to do with learning about mass media. Beware of the expensive, unedited, non-finalized textbook written by the teacher.
Avoid Com 101 with him at all costs, unless you want to hear him drone on about the Spokesman and buy an insanely expensive textbook written by him. However, his journalism 475 class is great. It's just one big discussion.

Absolutely confusing, biased, and completely not helpful.

easy course
Demers is a pretty cool guy. He is very biased toward liberalism, but his lectures are cake. Extra credit is given every time you attend class. All tests are open book, open note. He tries hard to be entertaining, and many times is. He's very liberal, but I like him and I'm a conservative.
I took multiple courses from him as an undergrad and thought he was fantastic. I really liked his teaching style and how well he knew his subject area (of course I was during the time he got into a heated argument with the city about open records laws).
Like everyone else, I hated how biased this course was. I wish the school could fire him, but fortunately for him he's got tenure. Nice guy, but he's totally using fresh college minds to try to convince us that the media controls us. Anyways, it's an easy A, but i didn't learn much.
He is so Boring. He also trails of a lot! just show up to class because you get EC for it. Not an interesting prof though.
Demers has gotten a bad rap from SOPH, JR, and SR who took his class before; however, as a freshman I have found Demers class to be too easy. He is extremly liberal, but contray to popular notion, does not subject his students to his opions. Tests are open book, which is nice too.
This Class is freaking easy, if you are a com major it boosts your GPA, going to the lectures you get Extra credit and the tests are open book open note. Not hard at all. Plus the lab ta's give extra credit throughout the semester. AWESOME time, easy A
very good. u know he's interested in helping the students and talked with him one on one. pretty interesting guy
He has a strong liberal bias but is SUCH an easy A. This is a good class for anyone who wants to pat their GPA.
Demers actually wasn't a bad teacher . . . yes, he gets really boring but he's highly interested in what he teaches and he really does care about students getting good grades and doing well in his class. The class is really easy--all open book--and very much geared towards Com major peoples.
He creates an environment open for discussion and debate. He wants his students to succeed and facilitates as much. He is more than willing to meet with you one on one. He is passionate about the subject and concerned about his students. Effort gets an A grade. Great teacher.
easy class. open book and open note quizzes. attending lecture gets you extra credit.
Very interesting lectures, a little dull at times but really gives you and inside look at media and opens your eyes to new things. Not very difficult to earn a great letter grade but you do learn a lot. enjoyed the class a lot

If you want to take a class on David Demers viewpoints then this is the class. He bases everything on his opinions rather than the facts. Horrible, horrible teacher!
I haven't been to class in three months and I get B's on all the tests. that should tell you all you need to know.
Easy class. Goes over everything you need in lecture...oh wait, I NEVER went. I went to this class maybe three times in the second half of the semester and still got an A in the class.
Extremely easy though slightly longwinded and boring.
awesome teacher. interesting lectures, although were a bit tiresome at times. easy homework assignments and open book quizzes. highly reccomended class if you are interested in a liberal viewpoint of the media, since he includes much of his own liberal opinions. overall great teacher.
The class is very easy. And until you get a bad prof who can't lecture, you won't truley appreciate how entertaining and clear he is in lectures. He does a good job at relaying ideas. Open book, T/F tests. Extra credit for attending. Anything less than an A- and you really should be shot.
He says he reads these so i hope he reads this one. This class is terrible. Most of the lecture is his opinion, then he goes ahead and writes quizes that you can't even do well on even though it's open book. Avoid at all costs.
Sooo extremely boring. He just blabs on and on..hard to stay focused and pay attention. Hate gong to this class but go to get the extra credit since the quizzes aren't very easy. He talks so much about himself and is annoying. To bad this class is req. for com majors cuz it sucks.
if you want to listen to some liberal man preach his neo-marxist thoughts take this class (oh all com majors have to). You also have to buy three books that he has written and they aren't repurchased because the book is always being updated. who gave this guy tenure??
extremely liberal and makes students buy the book he wrote. makes references to "conservative and religious people" but never "liberals." does break down and admit that "npr tends to be a little more liberal than most talk radio"
class isnt to hard but demers is exteremly liberal and bias
I loved this class. Demers was a great lecturer and the material was fun and useful. The tests are easy, all open book and open note. If you attend class, take his notes, and do your assigments, you will get an A. Very Very Easy and interesting!
Much better than COM 101, he is very approachable and does everything he can to help students. He actually comes off as more of a moderate in this class. He does tend to deviate from the lecture topics in class, and they are often on exams. Exams are open note and open book, but still difficult.
I found this class very useful. If you go to lectures everyday (you get extra credit) then you'll do fine in the class. The quizes are open book and are pretty easy. I liked Professor Demers, he knew what he was talking about. People who complain about this class are the ones who didn't even go...
I don't know what some of these people are saying! I found the lectures very interesting, professor Demers is NOT boring or biased! He represents the information clearly and allows the class to add ideas too. The format allowed me to focus on learning rather than memorizing/craming. Great class!!
Class was very easy, however, my biggest beef was with the textbooks. Not only were they ridiculously expensive (something he could adjust if he WANTED), but he revises it yearly, so you cannot sell it back and poor students for next semester have to shell out a ton of money for the "new" one.
He uses his class to share liberal propaganda instead of teaching.
Everyone touched it: his books are a huge problem, which is ironic since he preaches socialism during class time. Unless you agree with his statements, anyone will notice how bias he really is and how he uses the class as a medium to spread marxist ideas and try to start a rebellion against the Spokesman Review.
EASY A i dunno what else there is to say, open book everything, extra credit for showing up. this is a required class, he makes it easy
Rarely went to lecture, only went if i felt like getting up that early. Tests were open book so there is no excuse to do poorly. I did poorly on 1 test because i rushed it, if you have patience and find each individual answer you'll get an A, I also had an easy TA (Ming Wang) who probably made the class easier than it really was.
I found him interesting, probably because this was a statistical class. Com 101 mentioned below is a huge general class. Smaller classes are better. He had interesting assignments and the lectures were decent.
His books proceeds fund comm. scholarships! I took him the first sem. he taught the class, and he tried many ways to give tests for fairness and to increase the scores, knowing people test differently. He provided the other sides to his stances.
Yuck! so boring!!!
easy as they come. and remember, the answer to everything is 'social control'.

I'm not even sure he still teaches this class, but it was so interesting! I learned a ton about laws concerning the media and obscenity standards -- a truly innovative concept for a class. Plus, we watched "The People vs. Larry Flynt" for a grade

Very interesting class although liberally biased..., took an interest in my studies

So Boring!!! Makes you buy his unfinished book each semester.
Is this guy still pawning off that unfinished text every semester? He does it so you can't sell it back and he gets to keep the royalties. Com 101 was more like "intro to Demers' delusions of conspiracies in mass media" the guy needs to get over
He is an expert on his opinion and will test you on it regularly
Not a cool class

Yeah, I wasn't a fan. He definately valued his thoughts, opinions and his book.
he's boring
Funny as hell!
he is really big into his opinions! and really egocentric! he likes to talk about himself ALOT!! its pretty much ridiculous!!
Demers is hilarious. He talks about sex a lot in class.
He needs to teach more about comm and less about his own personal beliefs....he especially should stop testing on them!
Very boring. Everything is as same as what is in the book, b/c he wrote that too. Buy book or go to class, don't waste your time and money on both.
Really liked this class. Demers is interesting to listen to and easy to take notes to. Tests are open book and aren't bad either as long as you know exactly where in the book the bold words are.
I really liked this class. It was easy (open book and note tests) and demers was funny and pretty interesting.
Not a good teacher, very boring. But his class is super easy and you have to take him if you're a COM major. Just memorize all the bold terms in the book and you will ace the test.
Easy class, you don't have to go as long as you read the text and go to study sessions every week.
Could be a great class if the instructor was a bit more helpful and fair.
freakin' easiest class ever!
Demers teaches a fairly easy class, and the tests are simple if you learn his material. However, you should always be suspicious of instructers who teach from their own book, and Demers is no exception. It is advisable that you take some of his more radical and paranoid theories about the media with a grain of salt.
Weak on theory, weak on teaching, just weak...
This class was easy but I learned nothing. His teaching is boring and ineffective and he only teaches from his own books. Since taking his class, some of what he taught has even been refuted by other professors. Be very wary of anything you learn in this class.
Demers is a joke. COM 101 is a joke. The labs are a joke. Lectures are a joke. The textbook is a joke. The hands-down worst class I have ever taken. Single-handedly put me off becoming a Com major.
Odd dude, but he knows his stuff. He's clear and fair. Tests are open book, but you still need to prepare. Discussion sections are worthless, but you need to attend.
You would think if he's been this horrible for so long they would get rid of him. Most ridiculous class I've ever taken. Uses his own textbook which is extremely opinionated and probably made up, and his exams are open book but probably the hardest ones I've ever taken.
I've found my calling in life...become a professor, write my own books, and require that my 1000+ students buy a new edition each year. I'll make millions! And I owe it all to "Professor" Demers. Ohh and don't have TA's in a communication class who can't even speak English!
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. Boring lectures, useless *REQUIRED* AND UNSELLABLE book written and published by him and his very own publishing company. Easy tests if you can find things quickly in the book. Com school removed him (and his book) from teaching 101 because of too many complaints-he now an teaches upper level class.
Boring teacher, and very bias. BUt the class is easy and you can use open book on tests.
This class is painful...
His personal views are reflected way too much in his lectures. He frequently makes generalizations about groups he does not agree with. His teaching tactics include calling on people randomly off the roster. Never had a professor who bragged so much about himself, his teaching, and his books
Very helpful! I learned a lot in this class. Dr. Demers is one of the brightest guys I have ever met! I also liked his ties! I recommend taking one of his classes.
Not sure why someone said the books are unsellable... I sold all mine back. Demers is an easy A if you take the time to do a little reading, and you can pass with out doing anything other than going to class and using the book on open book tests. Great guy, good teacher, can be boring but an easy A so going to class is worth it.
Oh Demers. If only you KNEW. Paiiiiinful class to sit through. No one ever cared and would fall asleep all the time. Getting an A was the easiest thing ever for me. If you need a time to snooze between your IMPORTANT classes, take his class. He has no social awareness or even historical. Sorry, dude.
Demers is the only professors hand I shook on the first and last day of class during my WSU experience. He tied in real life to his lectures. To some people it may have seemed like he was dragging on tangent after tangent, but if you're able to piece his teaching style together, he is a smart fellow who likes to challenge you.
