Boring, lectures have no content, tests are not from the book or from his lectures (dunno where he gets the questions from), does not give test reviews.
African American History - rather interesting course, test involve multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer and essay (somewhat difficult). Overall, he is a very good professor.
He is firm with his assignments, he looks for the smallest mistakes within your work, and he is a man of many colors. Overall he is okay.
Hard, but a great teacher. You will learn a lot.
He gives hard test to those who do not listen. or take notes.. He need not review.. for he gives you all the answers! I liked him so much I did an indepedent study.. ps.. he is a man of color who challenges the youth of today to step to the plate.. and r
Been awhile since I had him, but if you read the books he gives you and pay attention in class, you'll do fine. He is kinda longwinded, but what prof at Ecu isn't?
he cares alot about what he is teaching but he doesnt know how to teach it! found the test hard because i dint know what was going to be on it. he often gets off subject! made me very nervous to be in his class!

He's a nice guy, but he is hard to understand. He can relate everything that is said in class to some kind of slavery issue.
Awesome class. Take notes and do the extra credit and you will get a good grade. Anyone that says the tests are too hard, obviously didn't do the study guide he gives you well in advance.
The absolute worst teacher at ECU I took black history to learn something about my ancestors yet I left the class wishing that thought had never entered my mind. His test are the worse and the only people who do good on them were those who cheated.
He is the worst teacher. Not everything in history has to do with slavery but he seems to think so. If your sick of hearing about slavery then do NOT take any class that he teaches
Dr. Dennard is a good professor. He makes class interesting by supplementing lecture with his most excellent collection of old Blues music. I recommend.
He is so nice but so boring! Everything relates to slavery...you're lucky if you get a study guide and even then you won't know some of the stuff on the tests, they're really hard. He does give some extra credit but its not worth much. Drop his class!
Bad teacher..very boring, you don't learn a thing..you could def. get by by not going to class and reading the material yourself BUT he takes attendence and after 3 absences you get points off your final average..DEF DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
OLD SOUTH class readings were fun; he is ok, although i can see how people say that he is boring.
His lectures were probably the worst I have endured in college. When he's not talking about slavery he gets off on tangents about the Patriot Act. He actually thought Al Sharpton was going to win the presidency.
Not too bad of a teacher, but he is hard to understand. I never cheated, but just about everyone else did and without any complications. I did not find out about all of his tests floating around until too late. Not very helpful outside of class or in.
All I can say is...DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! I figured that out too late.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is very hard to understand and he gets off subject constantly. He does not give good study guides for class and he does not give good lectures. Drop this class if you are scheduled for him I beg you for the sake of your grades. I found out the hard way.
He is very unclear about what you have to know on exams. He gives study sheets, but they aren't very helpful at all, don't take him if you can help it. He rambles in his lectures but you have to listen because he puts questions on the exam from his lectures.
If you read the book and listen to lectures, you'll pass the class no problem. Most of the people in my class run their mouth the whole lecture, which is probably why they are failing. However, this is NOT an easy-A class. You're going to have to actually do some work - you can get an A if you try.

Well I didn't run my mouth in class and i still failed. Probably b/c i missed a lot of class. Believe me you can't miss a lot of his class and pass. I was lost when iwas there and even more lost when I wasn't. He tends to ramble but that was the fun part of his teaching. i wouldn't take him again.
I haven't had this class, however I do know one thing, I have had 2 African American Instructors since I have been at this school. The one was new and was great. However, the other one was horrible. I have heard about Dr. Dennard and would not take him to safe my soul. What is it with the AA instructors here?
this guy sucks. i studied my butt off and managed to get a c. his study guides are useless ... and everything that comes out of his mouth is about slaves and black people, mind you we are in AMERICAN HISTORY ... he rambles a lot about nothing important ... and his attitude is horrible. don't take him!
You need some cheese with that wine? grow up. if you choose to listen in class and study you'll do fine. If you don't you'll do bad, just like any other class. Dennard's class is very informative. Multiple references to slavery meant in order for students to understand importance of issue in american hist.

This is ABSOLUTELY THE WORST PROFESSOR AT ECU!!!!!!!!! DROP HIS CLASS! I am NOT kidding... he rambles and is unclear... he gives trick questions on tests/quizzes, and then laughs when the whole class gets it wrong! HE WILL NOT CURVE! The first test there was one A, 2 C's...everyone else failed... and he wouldn't curve the grades! STAY AWAY!!!!
Very hard class!! It is all up to you to learn the material.. he doesn't help with questions in class and he rambles about slaves a lot. If you do read and study hard on your own you will be fine.. I got an A.. but you really have to work
This teacher rambles on about nothing... (puts u to sleep) he does stress certain things, but then they arent on the tests. he is very vague and unclear. i passed somehow, but don't take him!
He was not at all helpful, the paper he made us write was terrible you had to know his views in order to get a good grade. Tests were bad, he doesn't tell you what to study just the chapters(like four or five of them at a time) Horrible teacher. DROP HIM!!!
He was very unhelpful when asking him about test. He loves to ramble and talk about slavery, but tests are nothing like what he lectures. If I were u I would DROP HIM as soon as possible no easy A here or B or C!!!
He is extremely unhelpful and doesn't test on what he teaches. You have to read the books for his class to have any idea what is on the test. It's hard to get an A or B in that class. I study extremely hard for his test and can't make any higer than a D.
This professor sucks. I went in this class expecting to get an A or B but I probably will end up around a B or C. He is very unclear and does not test on material discussed in class. Unhonestly the only reason I went to class was because of his attendance policy. He is a hard grader on tests, even on extra credit work, only giving a few points.
Very nice man. Poor professor. Lectures are tangents/ramblings. Remained dependent upon student input. Readingslengthy/numerous (8 hist books...ea requiring bk rev). Essay tests match readings. Research paper difficult. Poor feedback and expectations unclear. Hard to please professor (never satisfied w/ your balance btwn info and interpretation).

I usually don't like history but at least if the teacher makes it remotely interesting you'll be able to understand and remember some things b/c the facts of history can be very interesting and amazing. awful, terrible... not clear, not helpful... tests are RIDICULOUS.... memorize the book, because the most random questions are on the tests. He's the worst, and if you care about your GPA at all, don't take his class!

one of the worst teachers i have ever had. you cant understand him in class... he rambles to no end, and he never goes over anything in the book. If your expecting an easy class, dont take him. You basically have to memorize every sentance in the book to even think about getting an A on the test.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Has very unclear expectations, and could care less about your opinion. His tests are very hard, though I passed. Spent most of course talking about slavery, the role of women, with little focus on anything else. If not for history in H.S. I would have failed his class. Never take him under any circumstances!

horrible. lectures do not pertain to exams. 3 exams (including final) and 1 essay, that is not given back until the day of the final. Tested material is straight from the text...goodluck memorizing 5 chapters for 1 exam
Dr. Dennard is a nice person but this class was Hard. I have to say if you don't know the book and history is not your subject don's take him.
Takes attendance every single day. I missed ZERO classes, yet it didn't help me one bit. I was borderline between a B and an A, yet I still got the B, so the perfect attendance was meaningless. Constantly rambles. Plays favorites. Unprofessional. Also doesn't know what the heck he's talking about. Lincoln was a ****, huh? Good God.
He's a ****. Don't expect to get anything out of the class (or even be adressed in the class!) if you are anything but a black christian male.
He is a okay teacher, he speaks low. Make sure that you do not fall behind on the reading because if you do it is a killer to try and catch up. I do not recomend him. If you like to teach yourself, love to read a lot and only get graded on your test and exam grades them go on a head and take one of his classes.

He is a good teacher who wants you to learn history not just score well on his tests for a grade.
In all honesty, I can tell Dr. Dennard is passionate about his subject and work but the class is not organized well. I made out with a mediocre grade after a lot of effort. Most of this feedback is true.Don't think like me that you can study really hard and do fine anyway! Switch unless you are supre interested and don't care about the grade!
I wouldnt recommend him as a teacher. He is no help. His test arent on what he teaches or what we have to read. He just sucks. On a scale of 1-10 his teaching capability is -5.
I LOVE DR. DENNARD! He is not hard at all! You came to college to WORK not get everything handed to you. He says whats on the exams, u just have to pay attention. He engaged our class and whenever we had a question he would stop and answer. Hes always willing to help, you have to help yourself! GREAT TEACHER WOULD DEF TAKE AGAIN!!!
THIS MAN IS FREAKING AWESOME!!!! He is always open during office hours and even after the course he is willing to help. He does field trips as well. I will def take him again!! He is passionate and loves questions. U just have to put in the effort TO LEARN!!!
This is the worst professor I have ever had. If you are not black do not take this class. He does not teach African American History which I would love to learn. He talks about stereotypes he has noticed over the years. DO NOT TAKE THIS. Waste of time, luckily I only had to suffer 5 weeks for a summer course.
The man enjoys his history, however only african american history and southern history. He struggles to stay on topic and most of the time he will either be repeating himself or going off topic on social issues. My class was american history until 1877 and we skipped the revolutionary war because he decided slavery was more important.
He is a very kind man and means well, but hardly stays on topic. His tests are the hardest I've ever taken and barely on what he teaches. He knows his information but his lectures are long and have no steadiness. I would not recommend him unless you are self motivated to teach yourself.
Worst professor I have ever had. The class was supposed to be American history 1800-1860 and he talked about everything but the period. Spent most of his time talking about politics and other topics (incorrectly ex. saying Hoover was elected 3x as was then allowed by the Constitution....)

If you do not like to read or study, then his classes aren't for you. His tests are easy if you read the text provided and listen in class. The hardest part of his tests are test essay questions, but everything else is to the point. Procrastination will lead to bad grades and complaining on this site. College isn't supposed to be easy.
He is very sweet but doesn't really teach during class. He talks about random things like Kardashians and social issues instead of teaching. Even if history is your strong area, you will not like him as a teacher!
Dr. Dennard is very nice, but he gets off topic ALL THE TIME. His powerpoint lectures rarely have anything to do with the required reading. I'm a History major, and I would NOT recommend taking his class.
Terrible Professor do not take him His tests are brutal which I would not mind if he actually taught and maybe gave us hints on what would be on it. 6 chapters and no mention of what to study is unfair. David dennard cannot teach, so if you don't mind teaching yourself history, this class is meant for you. I personally think that if I'm paying a university to instruct me on a subject, I should get some level of assistance from the professor. I ended up tuning out Dennard's ramblings about nothing, and just reading the book during class.
Very nice man, and he means well, but he never stays on topic.The test are an overall easy makeup but Dennard doesn't let you know what you should be studying so you'll never be prepared. you kind of have to listen then read the book front to back each time there's a test and study every little thing because you never know what's on the test.
He does not know what he is talking about in the class. There is no blackboard for this class and he does not check his email. If you want to pass you must read the whole book and study on your own. He will not answer any questions or tell you what material will be on the tests.
Dr. Dennard is easily the worst professor I have ever had at ECU. Dennard has a tendency to go off topic VERY often. He talks about racism constantly and does not teach. The tests are impossible even the book can only help so much. I pay tuition to learn about history not to hear a man complain about racism and occasionally talk about history.
I would not suggest taking this class unless you already have a good knowledge of American history. He rarely lectures (he tends to ramble), and does not do a good job giving basic historical information. His tests are difficult and are frequently not on material covered in class, just on material from the book. I didn't learn anything from him.
For the love of god, do not take any class taught by this man, especially if you are trying to maintain a good gpa or a gpa in jeopardy. He will ruin it like it's his only source of happiness. There are 3 exams, i have yet to see anyone make above a 77 on one. I only passed because he's such a slow grader that he missed the term deadline by 2 weeks
ECU - how is this man still teaching? What a waste of my money. I read the book from front to back and still did terrible on tests. Only one person out of about 25 got an A and everyone else received 50's and 60's. Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT take this course unless you have no other option.
I've been in this class for about 3 weeks and I've learned nothing all he does is talk for the entire class. He doesn't know how to use blackboard and expects you to read like 100 pages and know everything for the tests on your own.

HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! He doesn't actually teach you anythinghe just kind of rambles on about whatever the heck he wants. In his mind he probably makes sense but to the whole class he sounds crazy. There areonly 4 grades, 3 test and 1 essay. On test it's like he wants you to read his mind on what he wants on there but most fail.
i didn't think he was horrible- but what frustrates me is that he doesn't know how to use blackboard, for one, and that he also is bad about getting things back to you (sometimes my fault, sometimes not). during class he also just ends up rambling a bit. i like to say i agree with his opinions, but i don't want to hear them at 9:30 am.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS MAN. I read the reviews, and I was like "psh, whatever. how bad can it be?" This man must expect us to read his mind because I do not know how else we're expected to pass. The exams are ridiculously hard and he gives no clues as to what will be on them. He rambles during lecture, and hardly stays on topic. AVOID HIM.

This man does not teach, he does not give lectures, all he does is ramble on from one subject to the other with no correlation. You have to read the textbook and his tests are hard everyone usually fails the first one. on top of this he is a harsh grader, its hard to get a good grade but not impossible, I have a B in the class but it is tough
Awful professor. His lectures are pointless and you learn nothing. Only gives tests and one paper the entire semester. He grades the papers as hard as he can and does not give good feedback. The teacher assistant does all the work for him. You cant even contact the man about your grade, you have to talk with the TA about your grade.
he talks so quietly hell put you too sleep and he heavily focuses on slavery adn not much on other aspects of american history. Hell get off topic, he cant use technology so you cant expect your grades to go in blackboard. His tA grades everything. His tests are matching, fill in the blank and essay form and he make you do a long paper.
If you take this class Don't skip and Take every extra credit opportuinity. First test I got lower than a 40. You will learn a lot. Read all of your books. Your notes will help you. Hate fill in the blank questions. Be specific in your papers. Don't summarize content summarize structure and relatability to other books read.

I did not understand any of the contents he taught. Bad than the worsts. Should be retired or fired from the job.
He is a nice enough guy but his lectures just involve him rambling and barely using actual PowerPoints. Your grade is made up of 3 tests and a paper all weighted 25%. His tests have 10-20 true or false, 10ish fill in the blank, 10 multiple choice, and then defining vocal and 2 essays. The extra credit helps but READ THE BOOK.
This is the absolute worst professor at ECU. I am a history major and I have a 3.8 gpa and I barely passed this class. He requires attendance but he refuses to teach in class. His lectures make no sense and are jumbled. The exams are ACTUALLY impossible no matter how hard you study. If you value your sanity or your gpa DO NOT take this class
First semester here I enjoyed his class. Plain & Simple he lectures, u listen so take good notes. Can get off topic & ramble at times. Get the book. READ THE CHAPTERS!!! ( Don't skim, actually read folks). Lot of wrong or unanswered ?? on tests because I didn't take time to fully read & examine pages. 3 test, 1 paper. Would take again
All the reviews said dont do it. I was a full time machinist workin towards a degree in Industrial Technology and took his class as an elective as I love American history. I am also a conservative capitalist. While I disagreed with him ideologically, I found him to be very informed and fair if you apply yourself. Show up, take notes, win. Easy A.
