interesting class - similar to an art history course - but you either love him or hate him - a bit rude and arrogant, but still a good professor - i liked him and this course and would take him again
Nothing exceptionally good or bad
Very interesting class. Avoid if you don't like art, but if into art this is your class. Very clear on what he wants. Not very flexible.
Hard grader and he isn't a consistant teacher Focuses on music more than history. While he can be funn, his class is often very boring!
Really likes subject matter and knows a lot about it. Doesn't seem to into his students, though.
I hated this class. The content of the class can be interesting because it is like taking an art history. However, the professor is really arrogant and is not very helpful. I would take the same class again but with a different professor.
he was horible. he seemed like a good guy on the surface but he is rude and flat out mean. the class has nothing to do with anything and he grades hard on his papers. this was by far the worst teacher i've ever had.
Dr. Dennis is a good guy. It is a hard class, and at first, unclear. Just watch out for the TA, she will kick you in the ****.
An art history class that meets once a week at the Art Institute and once a week at Water Tower Campus....the lectures were awesome...I've always liked art, but this course gave me a whole new appreciation. Grading is very fair and expectations are clear
Don't listen to the mean comments. You do have to like art and lit. to like this class. the teacher RULES! he is entertaining and passionate and thou the TA seems ****y she offers tons of help. The tests are hard at first but if you try you'll get A
Dennis can be a jerk to people sometimes but the class is somewhat interesting. If you're into the humanities and like reading lots of literature from different cultures, this class will interest you. Not your tradition 101 course with lots of dates.
One term paper (7 pg.), midterm and final (fill-in, essay). Huge focus on arts. Don't need to read until he gives you list for tests. Can be critical, but helpful on essays. Rewards improvement, gives extra credit. Strict on final grade, no exceptions
He was a total jerk. He had a 'holier than thou' attitude. Granted, he was the teacher so he should know a lot, but he shouldn't expect students, espeically in 101, to know everything he knows. Also, the tests are insane!
This class is very hard, but very intresting. He is gets very involved in his lectures. Also gives chances for extra credit. Would recomind this teacher
On the surface this seems like its a great class especially if you like art, material interesting, however, Professors lectures are not helpful and boring. Exams are almost impossible, appears to be an nice guy but actually a complete ****.
Could be a very interesting, challenging course, but the professort is very arrogent and a stickler on attendance. I missed ONE CLASS and he called me at home to see why I was not there. Not a good lecturer and lacks methodology.
3 tests look at pictures(fill in) and write a paper for each(w/notes) however this man made me want to either leave school or end up in jail for hurting him. he is a horrible man who seems nice but should really just crawl in a hole and die. worst teacher ever dont take him!!
Knows his stuff. You will learn alot from this class. Overall it is very recommendable. Have Fun!!!A is a possiblity
Art history is a facinating subject and needs to taught more often. this professor is tough, and expects a lot but you will learn a lot. expect lots of reading and do not take this class if you already have a full load.
Oh Dr. Dennis, I have such a love/hate relationship with you. You know your stuff, you class is fun and interesting, but your writing guidelines drove me insane. Following his writing guidelines to the letter makes writing a paper VERY difficult and time-consuming. He's full of himself but helpful.
A novel approach to teaching history. Memorizing the art of historical periods, good if you cant memorize dates.
This is not what i expected, all he teaches is about art. Which to some degree is fine but when talking about 20th century germany other things are important. Not a terrible class tho, watched movies, but a TON TON of reading, sometime over 100 pages per night!
Really great teacher. I took him for 2 classes!
Dr. Dennis is so informative. His class will be difficult if you don't study and there's a ton of memorization, but is one of the most knowledgeable professors I have ever taken. I loved this class, it was mostly art history and no one can tell a better story then Dr. Dennis.
Very interesting class. History presented through the arts (plays, painting, poems, writers, music). This approach worked very well for me. I enjoyed his style and the material. It was alot of reading, but worth it. I still carry some of his writing sugges
Very interesting
Avoid if you're not a history major. Class pretty interesting, but not worth the work. Pretty cocky & seems too proud to give ppl good grades. U print your own 500 pg textbook, 3 ID "quizzes" (rediculously difficult), 2 essay exams (can bring outline to use) 1 paper. he is not at all open to creativity. takes attendance obsessively. not worth it.
Must take if you enjoy art or history. Awesome professor. Show up 90% of the time and you till get an least a B+
Dr. Dennis gives some of the best lectures at Loyola. If you enjoy art, music, and literature, you'll be riveted. Some people think he's a difficult grader, but I actually thought he was pretty easy. Just follow his paper guidelines, and you'll be fine. Dennis also gives ID tests, but these are a breeze.
Take this class if you love history, literature, art, music, or any combination of those areas. His lectures were so interesting. I didn't always do all of the reading (which was kind of a lot) and I still got a 96% in the class. Follow his paper requirements, pay attention, and study for the easy id quizzes and enjoy the class!
Very interesting class if you like the arts. He's really passionate about what he teaches, which is nice. Except sometimes it's just creepy [he closes his eyes and moves his hands when music plays]. He's kind of pretentious, but the material is really great and useful for any college student. Gives EC, and his tests aren't impossible if you study.
I read all the comments for this professor, and I am in his class as I write this, and the ones about love/hate are extremely true. He is very interesting and nice on the outside, but deep down you wish you could hate him because his paper guidelines are so outrageous. Do not take if you don't love writing along insane guidelines!!!!
Definitely take the class if you have any interest in culture. Follow the essay guidelines and you'll do fine, deviate and you won't. He actually reads your papers, too, which is always nice.
Print out your own textbook. Interesting class and very knowledgable professor. Although, he has very hard grading guidelines. Essays are a killer. Not too bad if you can get a REAL European history text for reference. Tests are like a race to beat the clock...essays are graded strictly to his guidelines.
i recommend this class! its a very original approach to history. every lecture he has personal experience and stories to explain what he is saying. It is true, for the essays, they take time and research. much of the information i gathered for my papers were outside of class. class gives a direction and you have to infer and find historical info
I am a history major and found his lectures not too great. If you do not like looking at sculptures and paintings, do not take this class. Research papers are pretty long and his guidelines are insane. You avoid one part of his guidelines automatic B or even C. He offers extra credit which is a plus but lectures were not interesting to me at all.
I found some of the lecture material interesting, but some of the reading was just boring and unnecessary. The exams were a mixed bag. The matching/ID part was easy but the essay part was insanely difficult because he has such strict guidelines. You don't have to buy a textbook but you do have to print 300+ pages of reading from online.
I agree with what pretty much everyone has said. Awesome prof, awesome lectures, printing the readings was a little painful but way better than having to buy every book seperately. The only part that sucks is essays/tests, he has really strict guidelines but if you follow them you'll do well. LOVE his lectures, though!!
I loved going to class! Its very relaxing-you look at paintings and listen to music. He is very passionate about what he teaches.
You look at pictures, listen to some music(while dennis dances in the front of the room). It's an easy history credit. Essay aren't bad as long as you dont put it off to last minute. NO TEXT BOOK.
Dennis is awesome! He looks like Jim Carrey. If you don't like History (and if you do) then take this class. I needed a credit. Interesting (not mandatory) lectures and he's passionate. three ID quizzes which is just memorizing the art and writing the creator's name and then two essays which he gives strict guidelines for. Book online.
Dennis isn't a hard teacher, the class is a lot of looking at pictures and watching him dance to classical music. You don't have to go to class as it is not vital to getting a good grade.. there are 3 "ID quizzes" which is just memorizing paintings and songs, and the midterm/final are essays. No textbook use, instead you print out your own.
No point in going to class, unless you want to see him dance to classical music and cry listening to opera. 3 ID quizzes that are entirely memorization. Midterm and Final are online and he gives very strict guidelines. You need to do a lot of research on your own to pass the midterm and final.
This class is not hard at all. There are 2 take home exams and 3 ID quizzes, which he gives you study guides for. You have to go to class every once in a while but not every day
Dennis is the man - I enjoyed all the material in HIST 106, he's very entertaining and presents some cool info. If you don't want to work at all, you can also get by
This class is SUPER easy! The ID quizzes are based on memorizing music, pictures, and texts. The essays are time consuming, but he tells you exactly what he wants you to write and you can ask his TA to look it over before you hand it in.
Dr.Dennis seems to be super passionate about this class. Unfortunately he didn't tell us that this class would be an online one and it basically is. We have 4 hours of homework a week and only have to attend class once a week but it's irrelevant. Overall, this class would be great if he actually taught instead of making us watching video lectures
The entire class is basically online. Every week you watch two lectures on YouTube and write two paragraph on each. This literally takes so long its not even funny he also is a really tough grader on these. Class only once a week which is a discussion with mandatory attendance and it is so boring i cant even stay awake. bottom line: DON'T TAKE HIM
On one hand, no tests and all you have to do is watch two lectures every week on youtube and write 2 or 3 paragraphs about them. However the midterm paper is very long, (about 11 pages for me) and is quite challenging. If you're not a good test taker but a good writer I would take this class. Also, he looks like Jim Carrey.
He's a very simple teacher, goes over questions and brief material of online lectures he posts on youtube. Lectures can range from 25 minutes to 1.3 hours. Only 2 Papers, midterm and final, they are not so bad if you do them EARLY IN ADVANCE. That's important. Make sure to attend, he does take attendance every day. Importantly, NO QUIZZES!
Dr. Dennis is very passionate about the material he teaches. You watch lectures online, write a summary, and only come to class twice a week. During class you can basically do whatever, since there's no quizzes or tests. A lot of outside work, online lectures can be 20min-1.5 hours, but only two essays to be turned in during the course. No textbook
Dr. Dennis is an incredible lecturer. Even though it was an online course, I took an incredible amount out of this course. Tells history through literature, poetry, music, and art-- and it has changed my way of looking at and appreciating the Arts. Quizzes and Forum contributions are quite easy if you take great lecture notes.
Personally, I DETEST history. However, coming at it from an art history standpoint really made it fun for me. I actually went to the Art Institute as a result and was ecstatic to see that most of what we'd covered was there. HE IS VERY HARD TO FOLLOW when it comes to his lectures. Half of what he says doesn't have any bearing on the forum's you do.
For HIST102, this is a blended class so we only meet once a week usually and the finals are optional! He can be long winded but really nice and passionate about history. Its all individual homework. Its easy but takes a while. Get the homework done and don't skip class, and its an easy A.
This class was blended with work to be done both online and in the classroom. If you are at all interesting in German history courses, TAKE DR. DENNIS. He is incredibly insightful and really easy to listen to. He takes attendance every class and you have to take notes on his online lectures. I recommend him, you won't regret taking this class.
Would not recommend. So much writing for each unit and gives no feedback. Online course but every week he would go at least 30-50 minutes over allowed time. Get ready to write if you're taking his class!
Such an easy class! I would take Prof Dennis for any history class if I could! His material and online lectures are super interesting. You have to write a lot about each unit but it is so easy to get an A in the class. No textbook, no final, no midterm, except for EXTRA CREDIT! He is very sympathetic and understand towards his students as well.
AMAZING PROFESSOR. I highly recommend this class if you are looking for an easier class. Class is only once a week and they are just questions based on the online lectures you do. I recommend going to them because they are worth points. Online lectures are not bad at all, but invest a good chunk of your evening to them (usually two a week).
If you need an EASY tier 1 history class, this is your guy. The class was interesting because you learn history through art, music, literature. Watch two online videos a week and write summary responses/reflections. OPTIONAL midterm, final, EC to boost grade. Only meet once a week even! Just an amazing prof and amazing experience!
This was a good professor. I enjoyed taking him, and loved the format of the class. All grades from this class (except attendance) are from your response to two online video lectures each week. I tended to put this class off, had I put more effort in I would have ended with a better grade.
Professor Dennis is a great teacher. He gives clear expectations and explanations. He assigned two reviews for the midterm and one for the final. There was extra credit in the class. The class is mainly designed to take notes. There are quizzes, allowed. I would suggest getting acquainted with a pen and paper, the notes are allowed on the quiz.
Loved professor Dennis! It was a MWF class but we only met on Wednesdays and Fridays. Almost your entire grade (90%) is based on lecture responses, and the lectures are posted on youtube. Go to class as it will help boost your grade since he passes out sign in sheets. Midterm and final are take home and optional, they can can you from a B to an A.
I would not take him again because: 1. Most of the grade is based on forums. His criteria for grading these forums are strictly based on how good he felt you did. 2. There is too much homework: 2 forums due every week and I wrote like 3 pgs a forum in order to get a decent grade. 3. He can be condescending. He sent me an email on writing emails.
The way the course is set up, it is basically all online, makes things more difficult than it should be. Don't get me wrong the content is good and the passion he has for the history makes it interesting. BUT the lectures online are too long and the videos are poor quality his voice is hard to hear through the videos, I just can't with this class.
Pretty boring class and the class is structured poorly. There are around 29 online lectures ranging from 30-90 min each, and for each of these you need to write a summary response paper on what you watched. The grading on it is pretty tough. If you do well on it though, you're set. Midterm and final are extra credit, only met once a week not twice.
this class is set up terribly. we only meet once a week and have to listen to 2 hour lectures online and then respond to those and thats how we get our grade. at first i thought that sounded great, then i lived through it and it is truly awful. the online lectures can barely be heard and are the most boring thing you will ever experience. 1/10
Dr Dennis's class I would recommend to anyone. I found a passion for history by the end. The course is based on lectures you listen to on YouTube, and then one in-class meeting per week; graded mostly on forums. It was a good way to learn the material without having to force it and you definitely leave informed and excited about it. 10/10
This class requires a lot of outside work. Every week you have to write summaries on an hour long video (twice a week). These summaries can get up to 4-5 pages so it is like writing a 4-5 page summary 2 times every week. This class took a lot of effort to get an A and it was very time consuming. The lectures are not very interesting.
This whole class is primarity forum entries and the only way to even get a somewhat decent grade is to write about 1,000 words. You cover two chapters a WEEK and subit two forum entries a week and that's 90% of your grade. It's horrible and it doesn't even count as writing intensive but it should. If he wasn't such a tough grader it would be great.
This class has a video lecture format. Basically, you watch two 30 minute to two hour videos a week and write a paper summary on each of them. These summaries consist of 90% of your grade, with the other 10% being just going to class. Meets once a week. Pretty boring, but if it's a class format you think you would like, it's an easy A.
If you do not want to waste your money and time, do not take this clsss.
The class is work heavy, you have to write probably 2500 words per week outside of class if you want to get an A (responses and summaries of online lectures), but the lectures are VERY interesting and I can personally guarantee that you'll leave this class more sophisticated and intelligent than you entered.
The class is mostly online, but the online lectures surpass the scheduled class time of 50 mins (Lectures can be up to 1 hr 30mins sometimes). You have to submit 2 "forums" (papers) weekly and he grades them more harshly than I've ever been graded in my 4 yrs of higher academia and these forums comprise 90% of the course grade. DON'T do it.
The structure of this class is absolutely deplorable. The amount of work that is needed for this core class is absurd. What baffles me even more beyond the fact that this class is structured poorly and requires a load of work is that it does not make sense. He focuses heavily on art and music throughout history rather than historical events. DUMB!
Professor Dennis is a great teacher and a great person. He is very encouraging, and he is also understanding. The class itself and the material is very overwhelming and very rigorous. We have 2-3 essays (1,000 words+) every week due. He is a very tough grader, but if you put effort into the forum write-ups you will see it reflect in your grade.
If you want an easy A, this is not it. Your grade is 90% summaries of his online lectures (you do 2-3 per week, some are over an hour long), and it is HARD to get an A on one, as each is only out of 4 points. Nice guy and passionate, but it is hard work. I did learn lots of interesting stuff, but too much word. Midterm and final are EC, but so long
There are no required tests, 2 hrs (ish) of videos lectures a week with notes and comments, and class only meets in-person once a week. It's practically an online class. In my experience he was a very easy grader, but man did I find those lectures boring - and I'm a history major! While he seemed very passionate, lectures were so unorganized
I really enjoyed the class. I took it online and I it really pushed me to become the best college student I can be. I thought I could have a little slack but I was wrong. No slack, but I really learned a lot. I just hated constantly talking about art and music as if was an art or music appreciation class but he references them back very well.
Professor Dennis was great! He is extremely passionate about history (specifically art history). The format of his summer online class was asynchronous so it was easy to catch up and get things done early. I worked around 12 hours a week on his 6 week class (watching videos/then writing papers). Really great guy. Put in the effort! It's worth it.
Mr. Dennis clearly loves what he is teaching and seems like a cool guy. But, you have two lectures a week that vary in length. Sometimes they are 40 minutes and sometimes they are an hour and a half. Then, to get an A, you have to write at least 1000 words about each lecture. You do way more work than you would do in person.
I absolutely loved his history class. I took it online, and there were no exams, just two forum posts you have to write every week based on his pre recorded lectures. If you love art, take this class! I enjoyed listening to his lectures a lot. They are pretty long sometimes, and you do have to write quite a lot to get a good grade on the forums.
Took Jterm and was afraid it would be difficult with working full time. Ended up absolutely loving it! Each day you watch 2 lectures, summarize them, and write a comment about what you found interesting. If you show enthusiasm, easy A. Overall very interesting LOVE the teaching style and his feedback is uplifting and personal. Favorite class ever

Dennis is always open to have a good conversation about German culture. Most of the course consists of pre-recorded lectures and summaries of said content. Just watch them and do the work with reasonable effort and you'll get an A. Fair amount of work, but as long as you meet expectations, there's no reason not to do well.
Professor Dennis is awesome, def take him! The lectures are super interesting and I've come out of this class so much smarter than I was before. It's basically just forums and discussions, & midterms and finals are EC :) He's easy to talk to and he's very passionate about history. Wish I could take him again!
I have a really high opinion of Dr. Dennis--I fell behind on forums in the Spring 21 semester and he was incredibly patient and reached out to ask if everything was okay rather than just assigning zeroes. He clearly wants students to learn and provides extensive feedback on assignments with his personal thoughts. Cool guy, wish we were in person.
Dennis is understanding and passionate about what he teaches, but I am not a fan of the structure of the class. We watch two lectures a week and do two summaries, but they take me up to 3/4 hours for each one. Class discussion is once a week, points for attendance. If you have a busy schedule it's way too much work for a core class.
Of the two pre-recorded lecture based classes I've taken at LUC I've disliked both. Dennis is a very nice guy and will let you catch up, but with the way the class is structured if you fall behind it is a Herculean task to catch up. The class felt like it was on rails and didn't allow for any conservation he didn't dominate and move on from.
Easiest teacher you could take for Tier 1 J-term. 4point extra credit and 20 lectures each lecture worth 4 points. Only grade forums. Watch the videos write a summary and comment your thoughts on the video. Completely asynchronous and you get all videos a month before class starts. You could finish the course 1 month before due. Amazing class.
Professor Dennis is such a sweet guy. He's very lenient and understanding, but the class is asynchronous twice a week and an in person discussion per week. It seems like an easy class, but the homework is so much work. Lecture videos that are longer than class periods, plus summaries that have to be long and detailed. Take him if you aren't busy.
Dr. Dennis gave us an easy class! He posts all his lectures on panopto, and all you have to do is take notes and post them to discussion forums. He also gives many opportunities to earn extra credit, and the workload for this class is fairly light. I really did like that he made things run so smooth for all of us, especially in such a crazy year
All homework was lectures. Watching the lectures online and summarizing them. Except the summary had to be at least 1 page long to get a decent grade. Attendance was only 10% of our grade. In class he could go on over half of the class time on a tangent before we even get to what the subject of the class was. He is passionate about what he teaches.
Professor Dennis is not a bad professor at all, but the lecture videos we have to watch for homework+forum notes are extremely lengthy and time consuming. He loves to talk, he's very passionate about what he teaches, you can tell he loves it, but it could be a lot and a bit confusing as he does go on tangents. It's a very straightforward class.
Prof. Dennis is quite the storyteller. The class is divided into one day of in person class where he answers questions, and the other day is asynchronous. Your entire grade is composed of attending the in day classes, 10%, while the other 90% derives from your forum posts. He assigns 2 lectures per week and they are about an hour long each!
Take this class for an easy A, he assigns 2 lectures per week and all you have to do is write a discussion post. You get used to his grading and basically have to just write a very long summary for 100%. Attendance is only 10% and you only meet once a week so if you don't go it doesn't really matter. There are no tests or final, super laidback.
Dennis is a nice guy and very understanding but the class is unbearable. 2 lectures to watch online each week, sometimes the lectures are longer than the actual class, then submit a summary of each lecture. at first he grades pretty harshly but gets better as the semester continues. the class format was very difficult for me, as a person with ADHD
One of my favorite professors I've ever had. Online lectures, but they are so worth it because the material is valuable and Prof. Dennis is so passionate about it. If you pay attention, you will love it too. His appreciation for art and music is what makes it so interesting. He's also super understanding and caring for his students.
I think the structure of this class could work for a lot of people, but I am just not one of them. You watch two hour-ish long asynchronous lectures a week and write page-ish long summary discussion posts for each of them. It's not a massive amount of work, but it felt pointless because you just write down everything he says in the lectures.
Set a schedule for this class and stick to it. It helps manage the class and slowly it will become a routine. Would take this class again! The art and music was much more appealing to listen to and pay attention to. I would recommend this class to anyone. Prof Dennis is very nice and understanding. You do have to put in effort in the summaries thou
Absolutely love him. He allows you to catch up if you fall behind and reaches out to make sure everything is okay. However, I don't recommend falling behind as I am having to put so much time into catching up. Lectures are very interesting and I have definitely learned a lot in this class. Cares more about you learning than grades 10/10 recommend
The class itself is not hard, and the material is interesting, but you MUST stay on schedule, or it will be a nightmare to catch up. I don't recommend this class for my ADHD friends. If you're good at sticking to a schedule this class will be a breeze. Prof Dennis is very understanding if you fall behind. He's wonderful and enjoys what he teaches.
This is my favorite class from this semester! It's 2 (summary) essays per week, which can be time-consuming, but I found the content so interesting that it wasn't bad. Dr. Dennis is a very nice grader as long as you're thorough and hit the points that you're supposed to. He's also hilarious so going to class/watching lectures is entertaining.
Amazing for J-term!! His lectures, to me, are very interesting and I usually don't like history but his class actually got me more interested. Writing forums after watching the lectures really helped me engage with the material as well. Overall, great professor for history!
He needs help... Cannot conduct a lecture properly at all!!!! Always bouncing from one idea to the next, with zero connection/correlation, which isn't helpful when learning history. Also tries to integrate non-useful material at any available opportunity. Please take another professor if you love yourself.
His lectures are boring and that is mainly because he goes over the videos that we watched before class and since you have to take in-depth notes, he is repeating information. He is passionate about what he talks about and there are no exams, so as long as you don't procrastinate, you should be fine.
Dr. Dennis isn't necessarily a bad professor, but the class itself is just very boring and repetitive. We only meet in person once a week, and the weekly lecture summaries online can be very time-consuming and hard to focus on. I did find a lot of the material interesting, but honestly just not the best history class out there. Easy A though!
if you are planning on taking him during summer, best of wishes. This course is an easy A if you're willing to write 1000 words every day and listen to an hour-long lecture.
For an online summer class, this is more work than anticipated. Some lectures were almost two hours long and were pretty boring. Dr Dennis is passionate about history and what he is teaching, but be sure to take notes during the lecture. There is a reflection for homework after watching each lecture, but to get a good grade you have to write a lot.
I loved Professor Dennis' class! The 2x/week writeups (these are done instead of any exams & formal papers!) kept me engaged week to week. Watch his longer lectures on 1.25x speed and write bullets, then expand on those bullets in the writeups. He gives extra credit and detailed feedback; lovers of history will gain so much from this class :D
A majority of this class was based on doing online lectures at home. We would only meet on Thursdays and our lecture summaries were due on Tuesdays. His lectures were very informative and I honestly developed more of an appreciation for art because of them. Everyone who says they were boring probably just didn't make the effort to listen and learn.
Dr. Dennis is passionate about history, but his online lectures can be long and dry. The writing assignments help engage with the material, and unstuck study proved useful for study prep. Overall, an interesting but challenging class if you stay on top of the work.
Dennis is a knowledgeable lecturer passionate about the course. Monday/Wednesday are online lectures with write-ups requiring a detailed summary, comment, and question. Fridays are in-person classes where he reviews weekly questions. The weekly work is incredibly time-consuming, and the tradeoff of no exams or papers may not be worth it to all.
As long as you write a lot for your lecture summaries and show up to class, you'll have a good grade.
As long as you write DETAILED summaries and show up to class you'll be fine. His lectures are sooooo boring, but we only had to be in class once a week.
