Dixon is awesome! Take him if you can! Very clear and makes sure students understand material. Tells you exactly what to study so it's easy to make an A! 2 open book/note quizzes, midterm, final. Will give you partial credit for showing work or putting something down that makes sense. Homework and participation points too!
The book is your Bible and you are on your own. Gives partial credit. Tests are super hard and most of the class time is spent on discussing irrelevant topics. You will have to teach yourself with the book.
You need the book for this class. Most of the class period he talks about stuff that is irrelevant to the subject. He will give you partial credit for just writing the formula down on an exam so that's nice. Usually responds to emails quickly. If you are looking for an easy A this is not the class for you.
Dixon was a phenomenal professor, when explaining concepts he was thorough and brought real life examples to the table. If i could take him for every finance course I would.
Professor Dixon was a phenomenal teacher. He was very thorough in explaining concepts and truly cared if the student succeeded. On top of this he brought real life examples to the table making the content more enjoyable.
One of the best teachers at DePaul! He will go out of his way to help you understand the material. You have to learn to understand the material, and lectures help connect all of the information together for you. He brings in outside examples that help clarify the information, and the best way to learn is through application. Take him if you can!
Dixon is a great professor. The best thing about him is that he applies real work examples to classes which makes it really interesting. He is also a great resource to have for any "real world" questions you might have. Go Dixon!
You have to read each chapter of the book yourself and do the homework problems assigned before he even teaches them. Quizzes, midterm, and final are hard. They are nothing like the homework. He doesn't allow much time for the quizzes and tests. Expects you to teach yourself.
The previous poster is not accurate, you can't possibly know about midterm and final before taking them in September. The course is challenging but if you do the homework you will be fine on the quizzes which are open book and the tests you get a cheat sheet which makes it really easy. The course is EZ as it gets though didn't really receive an A.
Professor Dixon is a pretty cool teacher. A lot of real world experience since he works for Wells Fargo. However, his teaching style is pretty tough. You are assigned homework to do on your own and then he teaches the material in the next class. The quizzes were fairly easy however the midterm and final were quite challenging.
I liked Professor Dixon, if you sit in the front, pay attention, and do your work you will get a good grade. Although I spent a lot of time with the tutor and learning concepts, the quizzes and tests weren't as bad as I thought. I would definitely take Dixon again if I had the chance.
Professor Dixon was an awesome teacher. Show up, pay attention, and do the homework and you will get an A. Great real life examples and explains the topics well. He's also a really cool guy and gives tons of partial credit. Definitely take him for FIN 310.
Professor Dixon was so helpful. The quizzes are hard but there is no surprises or tricks. He lays everything out for you to be successful. You just need to put extra time outside of class to get a good grade. He is available via email and such for questions but it's easier to ask during class. It's a pleasure to show up to class.. and mandatory.
Dixon is a great professor and an awesome guy. He was great at relating what we were learning in class to what was going on in the world. Dixon is the man, he's good at teaching and a fair grader. Make an effort to participate and you will have a great time in his class Attendance is 20% of your grade so show up.
This class was definitely one to study for. I recommend doing all the homework and participating as much as possible. As long as you keep yourself up to date with the homework and study before the tests you'll be fine. Professor Dixon is a great professor and I would easily take him again. His lectures are interesting and he explains all materials.
I would highly recommend taking Professor Dixon. He is a great professor and he made Finance fun. It was a tough class, but Professor Dixon was always available to help. As long as you do the readings and homework, you will be successful.
Professor Dixon is a badass. Participation is 20%, and hw goes into participation. I personally liked this, because it made hw a completion grade, and all you have to do is ask a few question and answer two hw problems on the board throughout the quarter. He's an awesome guy too, and explains concepts well. Quizzes and tests must be studied for.
This class is definitely not one of the easiest classes you will take at DePaul. The class itself requires a lot of reading and time commitment but professor Dixon is great about helping and office hours and he gives tons of partial credit. Definitely glad I took this course with him!
Take this class and this professor. He's good on curving and an understandable grader. he actually goes over the homework so you get a step by step analysis on how to do it. Also the overall class is fun
Prof. Dixon is a great professor. His lectures consist primarily of going over practice problems which ensures that students learn how to do the material. Very specific as to what will be on midterm and final (study sessions!). You NEED the book and online program to get an A. Stay up to date with assigned material and you'll do fine. Amazing Prof.
Finance isn't the most exciting subject, but Professor Dixon does a great job at keeping lectures fun and exciting. This class definitely isn't an "easy A" by any means but if you do the homework and participate you should be fine. Open note/open book quizzes. You also get a cheat sheet for the midterm and final. Looks like Gilbert Huph.
Dixon was a great teacher! It is a Monday night class and you will usually stay the whole time, but the class flies by. He is very engaging and is great at teaching. He applies real world scenarios to the course material and I would definitely recommend taking him for Finance 310.
Expect to teach yourself everything. Homework is on material that he teaches the day the assignment is due. Tests and quizzes are difficult, but he is a fairly lenient grader. You definitely have to work for your grade - not a blow off class by any means. Class was monotonous, but he's not so sore on the eyes so that made it a little more bearable.
Dixon is a great professor. wasn't the easiest class but if you do the homework and go to the study sessions for the midterm and the final you will do great. plus a cheat sheet that you can use which is helpful. You need the code and the book for this class to do homework/quzzies
Want to get a good grade in finance while learning the most? Take this man! As a non-finance major hard this is a hard subject. But... he made it so much easier to understand. Do the HW, PARTICIPATE!-- can't stress this enough! He is actually a really cool guy, he loves to talk about current events and can provide some great insight. You rock prof!
If you're a finance major TAKE HIM. He makes you do the homework before class but if you actually try to learn it you'll be shocked at how much it helps you understand. Prepare yourself for the quizzes and even if you understand 25% of what the material is he will help you with partial credit. Pay attention and participate and you'll do just fine!
Great professor very helpful and nice. He does amazing reviews before the midterm and final which are out of class on the weekends. Homework was kinda hard but manageable. Study for the quizes!!
Great Professor, would definitely take again. Problems for homework are worked on in class the week after. Thoroughly goes over the quiz, midterm, and final materials to make sure the students are prepared. Cares about his students and goes beyond to make sure they understand the material. TAKE HIM!!!
One of my favorite professors at DePaul. He responds his e-mails super quick, always gives you feedback on how to improve your participation grade, he genuinely cares about his students. As an Accounting major, I never thought I would enjoy a Finance class that much. Highly recommend!
I highly recommend Dixon. Not only does he go over the homework every week, but he holds study sessions (with free coffee and food) before both the mid-term and final exams. He's a really nice person, and is always willing to go over whatever you don't understand. You need the textbook for the homework, but you don't need the WSJ or MyFinLab.
It's my first time to post rate here. At the first time, i was complaining about studing by myself to do homework. But after i got used to it, i realized how efficient it is and subjects were getting easier.
Great professor! Clearly goes homework the next class period. Nothing unexpected from him and lays out everything before hand. Definetly would take him again!
Dixon is awesome. Super organized, thorough, knowledgeable and a genuinely good person. If you're taking this class with hopes of gaining a thorough understanding of the subject matter than Dixon is the one for you. If your parents are paying your tuition and you just want to slide by and leave early it won't be a good fit. Chili pepper all day...
Really great professor, makes not only the subject matter easy to understand but applies and explains concepts within the real world. Funny guy, great personality, extremely knowledgeable, and a fair teacher. You'll have to study a decent amount for the midterm and final but you honestly learn a lot of helpful information. TAKE!
Professor Dixon is one of the best professors I've had at DePaul. He made me fall in love with finance and made a difficult class very enjoyable. He has a great personality, and truly wants his students to learn and succeed. Highly recommend!!
Professor Dixon is one of the best professors I've had at DePaul. He is incredibly knowledgeable and has the patience to teach a difficult subject very well. Highly recommend!!!!
As a finance major, TAKE! He knows how to incorporate real world matter into the curriculum. Homework and chapter readings done before class. Midterm and final with review sessions at his Wells Fargo office before exam. I will be taking his FIN333 in the spring because he is a professor you want to take again and again. Genuine teacher overall!
He is a really nice and ok professor. His homework and tests are totally different. It's a bit difficult to study. Participation is worth 20%, but you have to really work for it. It important to study and work in groups. If you aren't an Acc major or have previous FIN experience then the class is hard. It is a hit or miss for a person.
Great class for non-finance majors. He thoroughly explains the content and his expectations of you in class. Also really funny.
Professor Dixon is one of the best professors I've ever had at DePaul! Dixon had a great read on his students and just really wanted us to succeed. He takes time out of his own schedule to hold 3 hour review sessions before the midterm and the final. He makes lectures interesting and encourages participation! He's great, you won't be disappointed!
Professor Dixon is a great person, his lectures are really interesting. Review sessions for the midterm and final, which were really helpful. One of the best classes!
Awesome guy. Im horrible at finance and I still got a good grade in the class. He really knows how to explain the material well. Review sessions help so much, go to them if you can. The participation is a little iffy but other than that great. Would take again.
I heard he was a great instructor for FIN 300 & 310 but apparently, that is NOT the case for FIN 333. He makes us do the most, assuming we have no other classes but his for the quarter. I did not learn one thing and finals are around the corner. We do so much homework before we even go over the chapter. STAY AWAY IF YOU DONT WANT TO FEEL MISERABLE!
If you know how to learn on your own and like putting in hours to read chapters and do pointless homework Dixon is your man ;)
I took Dixon's class this spring. He is a great professor and very good looking. He does require mandatory attendance and a lot of participation. He makes you work for your grade but overall he sort of hands it to you. Although I do believe he had a LOT of favoritism in the class. Overall he is a good professor. Recommend him for sure. Great Term.
Dixon was one of the best professors Ive had at DePauls business school, hands down. His class isnt an easy A or exceedingly difficult but in his class if you work moderately hard (do homework, go to class, study) youll learn more than any other classes where youve had to work twice as hard. I cant stress enough the quality of this professor.
Heard he was great for 310 and decided to take 333. Teaching style is hard to learn for this difficult class unless you know absolutely everything previously. Requires homework to be done before class and then review rather than learning it then doing it solo. Group project was hard with little direction. Walked out of the class not retaining much.
Professor Dixon is the greatest professor Ive had at DePaul! He is always willing to meet with you outside of class to help you if you dont understand a concept! The people writing the reviews below were the ones on their computers not listening the whole class. He gives you examples/homework that the exams are based on! Easy A!! TAKE HIM!!
Taken professor many times. Read and do homework before class for completion credit, then goes over questions in class. Participate! Group project is a lot of work, but he goes through everything. Not hard to get an A. Show up to class. Participate and asked questions.
Has an excellent track record in the real world & that reflects well in his lectures. Loves to turn the class into a discussion rather than just regurgitating info from a ppt. Taken him several times by now & I'm always enthusiastic to recommend him because this is a professor who cares & won't let you walk away if he isn't confident you understand
Lectures consist of class discussions based on current or historical finance-related events. Homework is heavy but worth it since it counts as participation & better prepares you for exams. Was more than willing to meet with students if they had any questions. The project is ambiguous, so ask questions. Professor Dixon is well respected on campus!
Professor Dixon is probably one of the best finance professors at DePaul. Extremely knowledge and wants you to exceed in the real world. Super understanding and helpful in all ways! Not sure why he has bad reviews for this class. Participate in class and you'll be fine. Exams are open book and open notes! Take!
This was 2nd time taking Dixon and would again! This class was difficult and not an easy A or blow off class by any means, but great class for any finance major to take especially with him. Very interactive and engaging. Speak up and he'll love it. Subject can be tough but he knows his stuff. Not a class you can't BS put in the time - Dixon rocks!
actually 300 -Professor Dixon is awesome. He gives 3 quizzes and 1 was take home, plus he drops the lowest score. He's an awesome guy and will do anything to help you. Make sure you participate cause you're graded but he makes it really easy. He curves all of your quizzes as well as your midterm and final. I took a 3hr but it was really enjoyable.
Good professor
Learned a lot about finance from Dixon. Funny professor that teaches invaluable, but simple financial modeling. The analysis of financial statements is a vital skill that is under-taught at DePaul unless you take an Adventis course. Overall, solid professor that I would take again
He's an amazing professor that really wants you to participate and learn! He's a very lenient grader and as long as you're doing the hw and taking notes, you should be good! Numbers can be scary and intimidating, but he does a great job of helping you understand what those numbers mean. Put in a little effort and you'll definitely get an A!
Took Dixon with the finance honors cohort. Participation matters a lot, have to participate in every class to get full credit for it and it's about 20% of your grade. Lots of homework but it isn't busy work. It's actually helpful. Really personable guy and I enjoyed his class.
Dixon is very caring and patience. Finance is a hard subject for me and he made it so much easier to understand. He also host review sessions for final and midterm with what's on those tests so you know what to study. He curves a lot of the tests as well! 3 quizzes - lowest will be dropped and midterm and final.
Our class was very unresponsive. Most people just watched Netflix and didnt participate even though it is part of your grade. He still made a sincere effort every class, held review sessions and was super patient even though you could tell it was slowly getting to him. Do hw, show up and try. He is nicer than he seems. Curves quizzes and exams.
Financial statement analysis is a very involved subject which is probably why there's so much work for this class. It's an ok class, but get ready to spend most of your quarter on homework and projects for this class alone.
Prof. Dixon is one of the best dudes Ive met at DePaul. Really nice guy and definitely a very caring teacher. I sucked at his class but he was extremely understanding and helpful whenever I needed it. 3 quizzes (lowest dropped), midterm/final, and then participation. Do a HW problem or 2 on the board. Its that easy. Overall really good guy.
He is such a great finance professor. Every class he goes over the homework step by step and does example problems. Any questions anyone had he would stop and go over it. He does a midterm and final review that are so beneficial!! Just pay attention in class and take notes, you can use a cheat sheet for the midterm and final. Amazing class.
Professor Dixon is the best professor I have taken at DePaul. His class is not an easy A but if you put the effort in you will learn a tremendous amount and he will do anything he can to make sure you succeed both in his class and out. Open-textbook midterm and a final group presentation that you work on weekly and go through as a class together.
If you want a professor that challenges you and makes the learning process fun, Professor Dixon is the guy. He makes things extremely clear and his understanding of the material allows him to easily explain the material and answer questions. Pay attention to the material, take the time to actually do the homework, study a bit and you will do fine.
Great professor. Very knowledgable and is able to answer any questions if you are unsure about different kinds of finance or careers. Very fair and reasonable.
Professor Dixon is by far one of the best professors I have taken! He puts everything out on the table the first class so that you know exactly what is expected of you. We had a fun class where we were not shy to participate. Expected two problems on the board, but you do them ahead of time so it is easy. Do the work, study, and you'll get an A!
Professor DIxon is one of the best profs Ive had. He is easy to understand, cares about his students, and wants everyone to succeed. He is always happy to answer questions and go over concepts if his students arent picking them up. He is also generous with test scores as he gives partial credit if you get a problem wrong but start it out right.
Prof Dixon was honestly one of my favorite professors at DePaul. He was more than happy to help outside of class and very patient when explaining concepts. Participation matters but he makes it easy and is very upfront about what he expects. Gives good advice and is knowledgeable about the industry.
Professor Dixon is super knowledgeable about all aspects of the course. You have a lot of work. Watching videos, coming to class, doing homework, and then a quiz. Similarly, the midterm is very tricky. However, if you take notes and pay attention, it is very manageable and enjoyable. Would recommend him!
Had better, had worse.
One of the smartest teachers I've had throughout my college experience. Really makes you learn the content and you actually get to apply it in his course. Overall, highly recommend this teacher and course if you're looking to get a leg up in finance.
Dave Dixon is the epitome of the American education system. Hes a decent teacher and fair grader, but his obsessive focus on grades and getting As is mind-numbing. You can tell he was a soulless banker. Class is pointless. Any relevant material we covered, I learned in previous classes. Profs like him make me wonder why I pay $40k/yr for DePaul.
This class is not super difficult if you have financial modeling / financial analysis practice such as taking the FIN 324 class. He really focuses on the relationship between the story and the numbers and talks about current events often. The quizzes at the beginning of the course are tricky and you need to move quickly on the tests to finish.
I knew Dixon is a bit of a tough grader. All my peers said the case studies, midterm and final would actually be difficult. But what I wasn't expecting absolutely 0 feedback on how to improve. He's difficult to talk to over email and believes all answers will be answered within groups. No feedback on anything. If possible, I'd avoid.
Dixon is one of the best professors at DePaul. He has invaluable knowledge if you're actually willing to learn. Any negative reviews are clearly just students who either didn't do well in the class or are spiteful for some reason. He really wants students to do well and understand the material.
Hard class but Professor Dixon does care about his students. He wants you to do well in the class but the material in the course can be challenging. Overall, wasn't too bad.
Dixon is a good human. He was in IB, knows his stuff and gets you ready to really understand how to read a financial statement. My only which was for him to offer live feedback instead of having to rely on our groups (if your group isn't good, you don't know what to fix). He's tough but I believe he wants us to do good.
He really does care about his students but this class is NOT a blow-off or easy A. I wouldn't say teaching is his forte but he is very knowledgeable in finance. Grading is comprised of participation, cases, midterm & final. Homework is graded on completion & effort. Engage during class & you will be fine. Take Dixon if you want a leg up in finance.
He is mean and does not teach. You will have hours of group work with little to no notice given for it by him.
Great guy, good professor! Take him if you can. He has a lot of knowledge and wants students to succeed.
DePaul University, Driehaus School, upcoming participants of FIN 333, Professor Dixon isn't the best professor; however, just be aware that the first half of this class is rigorous so be on your A-game to really understand everything. Second half of the class, you're basically applying your knowledge to group case studies so make sure to contribute
He is good but there are a few things that would just annoy you a lot. He keeps his students half informed, which is very frustrating and stressful. He is a tough grader and is very critical, although it is understandable why he is critical, as he wants everyone in class to learn and that's perfectly fine, but at what cost? Try to skip if possible.
When it comes to grading assignments, he nitpicks and loves to leave condescending remarks. He doesn't really prepare you for the midterm. Many of the questions on the final are similar to the ones on the midterm, so study the midterm thoroughly and you should be fine for the final. Just-okay professor overall.
Professor Dixon really cares about his students and does everything he can to ensure they succeed in his class. He makes sure to explain each assignment thoroughly and is always available to clarify any confusions. This course definitely gave me a better grasp on numerous financial concepts and I feel much more confident about starting my career.
Great professor! I had him winter quarter 2023 and received an A. Very cool guy and would recommend him. Ignore the bad comments, show up and do the work and you'll succeed. Helped prepare me for 324.
Participation matters. Professor Dixon recognizes and rewards effort.
Professor Dixon was very engaging and incredibly knowledgeable. His class was challenging at first, but the information being taught was relevant and useful. He was a great professor that recognized student's abilities, and also one who motivated his class to perform at their best. Take him if you have a chance!
I have a ton I can write for this professor, just work assignments, tons of work, very difficult, hard to communicate with and very rude. He cares about his class but has crazy high expectations, if you have other life responsibilities you better put them aside when you take his class. Midterm is insanely hard, I would not take him again.
He means well, but not for the faint of heart. Can be a very hard class
Given the extent of what was being taught it's understandably a hard class. However he made it even more difficult by changing how we would take the exams during the trimester.
David is a great professor , first five weeks of the course are very tough. Make sure you stay on track and keep up with the material. Second half of the course is a breeze compared to the first part. Midterm and final are very similar, group projects are pretty straightforward.
Overall, great professor. Loves to do group work and incorporates a lot of current events in each course. Has a great way of teaching material.
Overall Great Professor, first thing in class always talks about current events and ties it the world of finance. Likes Group work but the class is difficult probably one of the hardest classes I took.
Professor Dixon is a great teacher and truly makes class enjoyable. He really wants you to learn the material and figure it out by yourself/in groups. This class does have a large workload and you will need to put in a lot of effort; however, Professor Dixon takes in account your effort and is not a hard grader. Participation is key!!!
He wants you to participate but will make you feel bad for getting an answer wrong (15% of grade). He doesn't really follow slides, kinda does whatever he wants in lectures. However, he is very rude and difficult to communicate with. I am not sure why he has high ratings. He takes his elective course way too seriously. I would take ANYONE else.
Prof. Dixon is the best professor I've had. He's down-to-earth and genuinely wants his students to succeed. He brings a great attitude to class which, I believe, is reflected within the atmosphere of the class. As long as you attend class, you will earn an A. He reads these reviews and tries to improve himself, which shows just how much he cares!
This class was split into understanding each financial statement and then doing 3 case studies. I personally watched only the videos and did not read the textbook. I would recommend watching them before class that way the lectures are refresher. If you do that and turn in the homework, you will pass. One of the most useful classes you will take!
Creates great learning atmosphere, and teaches in manner that truly fosters understanding of the subject.
This class is straightforward if you pay attention and participate. Watch the videos/ read the textbook before class and you will be in great shape for the weekly quizzes as well as midterm + final. Contribute and ask questions for your participation grade. The class is super useful at the end with the case studies
Prof. Dixon is once of the nicest and most genuine professors I have taken a class with at DePaul so far! Class was pretty easygoing, one weekly homework assignment and midterm & final exams with group cases. Spent class talking about that weeks chapter and then showed examples that tied in with the content. Fun class and really great professor!
Professor Dixon was the best. Compared to other technical finance courses that I took in undergrad like FIN 324, this was the most straight forward. Professor Dixon is here to make your life easier compared to the professor I had for that class. He encourages questions and is here to your professor, not a boss
I really enjoyed FIN 333! The course offers a practical application of finance and accounting, making it straightforward and engaging. It encourages a deeper understanding of the components within financial statements, making you think about the "why" and not just the "what." Though the first case model for Midwest Shocks, is aesthetically ugly.
Professor David Dixon's FIN 333 class is a game-changer. After struggling through Professor Essenburg's FIN 324, Dixon's clear explanations, engaging lectures, and supportive attitude were a breath of fresh air. It felt like night and day—Dixon truly cares about his students and their success, making the learning experience enjoyable and rewarding.
Professor Dixon changed the way I approach financial statements. Out of all the finance courses I've taken at DePaul, I learned the most from Dixon's. First half of the class is working through the textbook ( reading really helps on quizzes, midterm, and final). Second half is working in groups. If you have questions he is very willing to help.
Professor David Dixon's FIN 333 class is straightforward and supportive. After the challenges of Professor Essenburg's FIN 324, Dixon's clear explanations and engaging lectures are refreshing. He genuinely cares about student success, fostering a positive learning environment
Horrible. A lot of people in my class had a lot of issues with this guy. The worst professor and class experience I have had at DePaul. Do NOT take this guy, I would rather take a 7 am class.
Would not take again, had issues with various students, does not teach the material but expects you to know it and just the most difficult grader, takes his job way too seriously but not in the way that makes him a better professor. Will target you if you get bad grades instead of trying to see if he can help
Professor Dixon is fun, chill, and makes class engaging by starting with current events. The material is practical and useful, especially if you're exploring finance. He has a cool career story that adds depth to his teaching. Midterm and final are tough, but with the study guides (and since they're open-note), you'll be fine.
Great Professor, midterm/final, 2 group projects, hw, and class participation. He is definitely intimidating initially but he wants you to learn and retain something. Definitely worth taking, its a class were you have to put in work to see results. He also makes exams relatively easy since you are allowed to have notes with you. Would take again.
Tough grader and very fast paced. I would say be prepared to pay a lot of attention, do not miss any submission date, and study study study. He is very helpful to students if you are struggling he will give you feedback but just be prepared to WORK
Professor Dixon is a great professor who prepares you for a career after DePaul. Classes begin with financial news discussions to encourage participation. The course includes weekly homework, group case studies, open-note exams, and biweekly quizzes. He's honest, supportive, and offers chances to improve your grade.
Solid class overall. I think this class should get harder because with ai its easier to pick up and understand financial statements. It would be nice to understand more complex industries like insurance or something. Group work I felt was unnecessary, but exams were easy. Make good cheat sheets!
My favorite professor I've had at DePaul. The two exams are very similar; don't let bombing the first one worry you. He takes you through two group projects that really help you grasp the material and ace the final exam. He is brilliant and loves talking about current events in finance. Stay on top of hw due dates, cuz you talk about it in class
Professor Dixon gives clear grading criteria and suggestions to be successful at the beginning of the course. As long as you follow that and put some effort in, you can do well in the course. Be prepared to put in a few hours weekly for homework. Second half consists of group assignments. Great professor overall, not sure how anyone could fail.
