Great teacher I had him for the honors lab. Even though the lab is very anal, he made it enjoyalbe even at 8am. He is someone you can go to for help not only for the class but for future guidance for careers and such.
He's an outstanding professor. Very energetic and clear. He had "Top 10" lists in the middle of every lecture to make classes fun. Highly recommended.
AWESOME! i had him for lab, and not one of my experiments went right the 1st time.. but he always, always helped me out and did the labs with me. it was nothing i was doing, i guess i just have bad chem karma, but he understood and did not downgrade me
Dobbs is a great guy. He is always so concerned if you are actually getting the material. He gives homework weekly and your grade is based mostly on the tests and final. Very easy going. Always willing to help.
Very nice guy. A little decieving on test (harder than examples in notes or practice tests) but a great grader. Lots of partial credit on graded tests. Good class to take, never feared going to class!
He teaches the material well in class, but the tests are WAY harder and have a lot of twists and turns in them. He says he's willing to help, but doesn't act like it when you actually want it.
If you have had a good chemistry background.. take him. He is very helpful and explains everything in depth.. I had a bad chem background so I fell behind a lot.. good grader though and really nice guy.
He is very deceiving. No matter how much you study, you won't get the grade you deserve. Nice guy though- but he seems a little fake-nice.
This is probably the most fun you can have with a professor in class. This is also the most painful test experience you can have. You think you know the material and his tests look like something entirely different. The tests are insanely hard and if you aren't a chemistry wiz dont take him.
I had Dobbs for lab. He's a great lab teacher.
He is a really nice guy and makes the class interesting. However, his tests are impossible. No matter how well I think I know the matter, his tests always seem to blow me out of the water. But, I like his top ten lists and he is always open to help you! This is not a breeze class tho, by far.
Dobbs is an outstanding prof. He challenges you but doesn't leave you alone to struggle. He loves chemistry and makes it fun for everyone.
He's a pretty good teacher, but his tests are REALLY hard. It helps to do the problems out of the book because they'll help you on the test
I had Dobs for two semesters and I liked him progressively less as time went on. He is nice, yes, but no matter how hard you try, his tests are decieveing and very, very hard. It made it hard to like the class.
He is extremely funny and helpful. If you pay attention in class and do the problems, the tests will be no problem. I am not great in chemistry and I did much better in his class than in an easier one. Plus, you will UNDERSTAND the material so much more than any other section. Take his class!
Dobs is a great guy and absolutely hilarious...however, his tests are extremely difficult. The test questions are a lot trickier than the examples he does in class so be prepared. Just do the homework and stay on top of the problems he assigns.
Dr. Dobs is the bomb! This was, by far, my favorite class of the semester; I am majoring in chem after taking it. I honestly do not believe his tests were as hard as everyone makes them out to be. If you don't let yourself fall behind, you will be fine. TAKE HIM!

Funny; makes chemistry as "fun" as chemistry can be; gives out practice exams from previous year; quizes on usually once a week; grade based on 4 tests plus weekly quizes
I almost gave up on chemistry untill I switched profs to Dobs. He's a great guy and did the best he could to make chemistry fun. He was always willing to help me outside of class and made sure we understood everything before moving on. His tests were hard because he wanted to prepare us by giving us hard questions. Top 10 lists were great.
Dobbs is my absolute favorite professor. He's very helpful, and he's really entertaining. He makes it easy to pay attention in class because he breaks the class up with a usually completely unrelated top 10 list of funny stuff. If you don't take him, you're missing out. I doesn't hurt that he's also cute, in a geeky chem guy way!
He is the coolest guy in the world who makes the hardest tests
When I got to Creighton, I was not excited about Chemistry at all. Dobbs makes the class really fun and entertaining, but you have to be willing to put in a lot of work outside of class. Your grade really depends on how much time you are willing to dedicate to Chemisty. Only draw back is that he makes assumptions that you remember things from HS
Teaches you how to do the labs the right way. Wish he taught Quantitative Analysis Lab. Has great insight and encouragement.
Very good teacher. He is enthusiastic about the material, which makes it enjoyable. He explains things in a thoughtful and organized way and is extremely helpful outside of class. He even has review sessions before tests. His top 10 lists are funny and make class a treat to go to. Take him if you want a good chemistry experience.
I did not take Dobbs first semester and I am still kicking myself for it. He is the best teacher I have ever had in any subject. His lectures are clear and concise. He is great to talk to during office hourse and is more than willing to help. Review sessions before the test and final. I can't say enough about him. You will not regret taking him
Dobbs is a really cool guy. He makes lectures really clear and entertaining, like on the first or second day of class when we calculated the mass of a half-keg of light beer. The tests can be kind of hard, but if you go in for help at the tutor sessions and do the hw its easy. Sometimes you can use the hw on the quizzes too.
His class was very interesting, kept students involved and their attention towards what was going on. Very energetic and uses unique examples that pertain to everyday life for help in class. The tests can be hard, but if you do the assignments and seek help they are relatively easy. Definitely a great choice
Dobs rocks.! He was very helpful when it came to registration questions in the Ratio Studiorum class. I have heard he is a hard teacher when it comes to lab but you learn a lot. Overall, take him if you get a chance!
Dobbs rocks! If I'd had another teacher, I wouldn't have survived this course. He didn't mind the fact that I was in his office nearly everyday with questions. He was always willing to geive extra help. His lectures were fantastic. Beware of sitting in the front row, though. Sometimes he likes to blow things up.
In class examples are super easy, but exams are super hard and nothing like you see in class. Very fast! If you can invest most of your time into this class then you should probably finish with a B or B+.
Dobs is great. If you pay attention to his lectures, you will do fine in his class. When I had to miss class for a research conference, he not only helped me catch up, but helped me with my presentation. I never actually read the book because his lectures were very clear. He is also fun, likes to tell really corny jokes.
Dobbs is great!! He will help you with your questions. Tests are very tough. Don’t miss lecture and do all the homework problems otherwise you might end up with a D or F. If you are looking for an easy chem. Instructor then he is not for you….
Don't get me wrong Dobbs is a great guy, but I really would suggest taking Anderson or Mattson over him. I couldn't get into those so I took Dobbs and I ended up having to stuggle through it every single day. His tests are insane and I never felt prepared and only managed to get a B because I did well on the final which he doesn't write!
A wonderful chemistry instuctor who cares for his students and always makes class interesting with his structured lecture outlines and funny stories. One of the best teachers I have ever had hands down! Chemistry requires dedication no matter whom you take, so you might as well take someone who cares, teaches, and inspires.
Dobs is the man! Best guy on campus!! He will make it worth it to come to class!
the material was difficult--he made it as easy as he could without babying us along too much.
He's very involved in class, making chemistry interesting. Plus he gives breaks during class where he does something totally off subject.
Dobs is one of the best professors I'm taking this year. He is extremely helpful and approachable outside of class. Although class isn't manditory, I never try to avoid it because it is so much fun. Dobs make an exciting subject even more exciting. His lectures and demonstration shows that he really likes the subject he's teaching.Eight thumbs up
Best chem professor ever. Tries to explain everything as clear as possible, willing to answer any questions (in/out of class), and always spilts 50 minute lectures in half with a funny top 10 list or something.
Dobs is an absolutly great guy. He makes sure that you understand the material and is more than willing to offer his help inside or outside of class. My only criticism is that his tests require you to know everything that is covered. He usually puts the hardest questions he can think of on them, and it can be frustrating.
Dobbs is hands down the best chem prof at Creighton! Use him as a resource if you are having trouble on the material!!! I can't stress that enough. Don't underestimate the class though if you've taken chemistry before. His tests can be tricky, but just do the homework and study frequently and you will do well. Absolutely insane! :D
amazing.
Dobbs is a great professor. He makes chemistry as clear as it is going to get. His tests are difficult, but if you study it is not too hard to get an A. He assigns book problems, but they are not mandatory. To help break up the class he always does a top ten list too! I would definitely take him again!
Nice enthusiastic guy. Great teacher. Incredibly difficult tests.
Classes are fun & he is very willing to help in- and outside of class. Material is demanding and the course moves fast. Keep up with homework, ask questions, & take advantage of office hours, this class is relatively easy.
Slightly overrated, but still an interesting class. Sometimes gets annyoyd during office hours, and tests include info not covered in class. OK teacher overall
Great teacher. Leads a class with many example problems and cool demos. The homework was optional & good practice. 10 Quizzes throughout the semester & keeps highest 8. 4 Tests that can be difficult if you don't understand the concepts very well. He is extremely helpful in & out of class so go see him! The ACS final was easy compared to his tests.
Awesome chem teacher! What he taught actually made sense. Tests were incredibly difficult though. Also he had a great sense of humor and tried to make coming to class worth it through top 10 lists and demos. Even though the homework isn't required, DO IT ANYWAY! Most likely some of test questions are identical. I would retake any class he teaches!
amazing! take him & you'll actually learn something.. and hilarious! makes class bearable.
Great guy with great personality. The class is full of taking notes (which are very helpful) however the tests are not easy. Likes to trick you with his question selection, but if you pay attention and study every week, you should do great! Great guy, okay professor.
Such an amazing teacher!! Seriously cares about students and gets to know them. Knows what he is doing. Tests can have some curve balls on them, but it just shows how well you understand what is going on in the class. One of the best teachers I have every had in my life - hope to take him again.
Amazing teacher!!! you can tell he really cares and encourages students to ask questions every day. a really nice and and is hilarious. he manages to make chemistry class bearable. great teacher.
An amazing professor, very enthusiastic, clear, and funny. As long as you put a little effort into the class, you will definitely learn a lot. Weekly quizzes, four tests and a final, which is nationally standardized. Study and you'll do fine.
Sucks. Condescending. Pretends to be a nice guy.
Really can't understand why anyone would want to take a course from this guy. Unreasonable tests and course expectations
Lectures fast with distracting voice; not easy to follow. Save yourself a semester's headache.
Makes your brain hurt. Assigns lots of problems and then expects you to do them all and more. If Dante were alive, he'd be writing about this tenth circle of hell.
He's definitely not the easiest Chemistry professor, yeah you might get a C or a B+ but you will walk out with a lot of knowledge, at least I did. For most, you will have to put in a lot of time and effort, and he's always there to help and really does care about your grade in his class. However if your looking for an easy A do not take him, but if
Don't listen to what some of these other comments say. Dobs is a great teacher! His class is hard, but you will learn all you need for the test if you pay attention and do the homework. He's very enthusiastic about teaching, and his enthusiasm definitely helped to keep me from dozing off. Definitely take Dobs!
I don't know what the other comments are talking about, Dobs is the best! I always dreaded waking up early to go to class, but Dobs enthusiasm and excitement for the subject helped me get through the morning! He has printed notes for you, so it makes it even easier to follow along in class. Dobs is great chemistry teacher if you want to learn alot!
One of the best professors in the department. Makes note-taking easy and is extremely enthusiastic and humorous throughout class period. Tests are usually straightforward, but he will make sure you know ALL the concepts. A fantastic professor that helped me score in the 99th percentile of the ACS.
Labs followed along well with lecture. The lab notebook makes them confusing, but Dobs clarifies them before every experiment. Grading can be picky, but he gives weekly quizzes which are easy points. The midterm practical was horrible (not his fault; another faculty member wrote it), but the department made up for it with an easy final.
He is the best, just do the homework and you will be fine.
Dobbs is a fantastic teacher. I actually enjoyed going to class every MWF. He's a really nice guy and loves to help people. His tests are a little difficult, but if you actually study what he tells you and do the problems, you can pass this class easy.
Dobbs is the God of Chemistry! He is extremely nice and a really good teacher. His lectures are clear and concise, but his tests can be a challenge, but do the homework and you will be fine.
If you want to learn chemistry, take Dobbs. If you want to slack, do not. There's nothing to dislike about him as a prof: great notes; clear explanations; willingness to help; funny; and easy on the eyes. Given the subject matter I went in thinking I'd find this a very dry class but in fact as the very opposite.
He is am amazing teacher. It is easy to see that he cares about his students and that he truly enjoys what he is doing. He does demonstrations at least once a week that fit in to the course material. His tests are really hard, so don't take him if you plan to slack.
Dobs has to be one of the most fun professors at Creighton. He really cares about his students and he does a great job teaching. Makes class fun to attend and easy to follow
I liked this class but it was hard. He has high expectations so you have to understand the material. His demos are entertaining and helpful. I thought the test problems were a little harder than the homework. He is really helpful during office hours. He honestly cares about how you are doing and appreciates it if you show him you are working hard.
Dobs is possibly the craziest guy this side of the Mississippi. His tests are hard, wit is cunning, face slightly asymmetrical, and his humor is based around ethanol and fluorescent compounds.
Dobbs is the best Chemistry teacher that have ever had. He makes the material easy to follow so you have the OPPORTUNITY to do well. You still have to put in the work. He has a lot of patience and is most definitely willing to help if needed. He gives good life advice and is a great person in general. I would recommend him over Michels any day.
Dobs is awesome. The best gen. chem prof. He is funny, nice, and he is a master at what he teaches. Uses class notes which are helpful. Do all hw and study consistently, not night before the test, and the class will be a breeze.
Dobs is such a great teacher! He explained everything so well. He prints off notes packets that you can just fill out as he teaches instead of taking actual notes. He does demos and brain breaks. Best teacher
This teacher is your best bet if you want a "cool" teacher who isn't bad at teaching. He is probably one of the best chemistry teachers in existence. He really wants you to pass the course. I am not good at chemistry. At all. This guy does recognize hard work and will do what he can, but you do have to work very, very hard in his class.
Dobs is the sort of guy who knows what he wants out of his students. He is always very willing to set up meeting times in order to help you benefit not just pass the class. As a person he''s funny and humble to the point of self-deprecation. He is a tough teacher but he knows effort when he sees it. He adjusted my grade to allow me to pass C-.
Dobs is funny and tries to relate to how the students are learning by how he did when he was in college. His class is my favorite this semester. He is super chill if you go in to ask him questions, too.
Best Gen Chem professor. Really looks out for students and presents things in a very easy way. Tests are exactly what you would expect. Never any curveballs. I look forward to taking more classes from Dobs
Dobs is a great teacher. I came into Creighton not knowing how much work I would really have to put in to my science classes so get ready to do 2-3 hours of problems a night to keep up in class. If you study and go over the previous years exams you should be okay on the exams (2nd is definitely the hardest). An incredible guy though he's awesome.
Dobberpuhl is an understanding and caring professor. He gets his students. If you have an 8:00 class, he'll change your times to 8:15 so you can get up later. It doesn't seem like a lot of time, but those 15 minutes count. And he ends class early and has a break in between. Take him. You will not regret it. Hands out notes and is easy to follow.
Although, it is an 8 am class you will not be bale to fall asleep because his sense of humor keeps you on your toes! He wants you to learn the material so go to office ours. He can be intimidating. But he is by far the best teacher in Chemistry.
He is an amazing professor. He knows the material really well and is passionate about the subject which makes the lectures interesting and helpful. Definitely attend the lectures and do the suggested book problems though. The lab activities are great as well. He is helpful & funny. I wish he taught more classes because I would take them all.
class was really hard, esp. with poor background in chemistry. But, he makes the class interesting and entertaining. If you're struggling, he is extremely easy to approach and so helpful. The bummer for me was that I did everything I could to dp well- I went to him for help, did the homework each night, read the text, and still ended up w a C+
It wasn't an easy class, especially if you've only had basic high school chemistry, but it's definitely doable if you put in the work. He gives plenty of homework problems, but they're not really homework as they're never actually due. They're more just practice problems. Also, he gives regular office hours and is always willing to help.
Gives great outlines and lecture is dedicated to notes, explanations and experiments. Tries to break class up into smaller pieces so that the information doesn't overwhelm everyone. Slightly insane in that he talks about the voices in his head and admits to huffing chemicals in his youth, but a great prof. DO THE HOMEWORK. Office hours help too.
Dobs has been my favorite professor so far. He relates well to students and knows how to explain things in a clear and concise manner. Took CHM 203 in the summer with him and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you do the homework, he adds 2 points to your next exam score. He also did a lot of interesting demos in class.
Dobbs is hands down the best professor to take for gen chem. He genuinely cares about his students and their success in his class. He lets you know exactly what is going to be on each test and sends you previous tests to study from. His lectures are amazing, and he is hilarious. Would definitely take this class again.
Professor Dobs was by far my favorite professor this semester. He made a hard subject like chemistry fun and entertaining. He is always willing to answer your questions and will always meet with you outside of class if needed. He has a great sense of humor with his in class breaks and him constantly making fun of himself. Take him if you can.
Dobbs is an amazing, fun professor. When he's not doing everything in his power to help you succeed, he's having fun and encouraging you to stay motivated. He does fun demos in class that show you the relevance of what you're learning. Make sure you do the homework! AND, he has note packets, so you can focus on lecture. I mean who doesn't love that
Dobs is hands down the best chemistry professor at Creighton. He knows his stuff and knows how to teach it to students in a way that is conceptual and memorable. There's a lot of homework, 3+ hours per night, but he uses homework questions on exams and gives 2% extra credit if you turn in all the homework. Outstanding professor overall.
He's one of the best chemistry teachers here. He's very good at clearly explaining things if you don't get it the first time. But, his exams are pretty difficult, I'm not gonna lie. You have to do all the homework problems (6-9 hours per chapter) if you want to do well on his exams. Also, go to his office hours. Trust me, it helps so much.
Had him for Chem Lab, if there is any way to build a schedule to get him as your lab instructor, DO IT. Great guy, hilarious and incredibly helpful.
Dobbs brings so much positivity into the classroom and this completely changes everyones outlook on the class. He truly cares about the students and how they do. He will always be there to help if you do not understand concepts whether it be for Chem lecture or lab. Highly recommend!!!
Dr. Dobbs is a great professor. His labs will keep you laughing and enjoying the subject material. His quizzes are sometimes difficult, but he does a good job of posting optional review questions online.
Dobbs is really something else. Super tough tests and lots of crappy humor. I would like nothing else than to have a men in black agent erase my entire memory of this class. Tough as hell and be prepared to study.
Dobs is the best professor I've ever had! There is no mandatory homework but he uses multiple of the homework problems on the weekly 10 point quizzes. The tests are heavy but no terrible. If you pay attention and do the book problems you will have no problem.
Dobs is one of the best professors I've ever had! His lectures are interesting, and usually lets you out 10 minutes early, and breaks during lecture! He loves the book, so doing homework problems will help you on quizzes and tests. Weekly quizzes on Friday that have homework problems on them. Tests can be challenging! Easy to go to office hours!
Gen chem is hard no matter who you take BUT dobbs clearly cares about his students! He made himself accessible outside of class and even on Sundays or Saturdays before the test! You have to do the homework because two or three of the questions on the test will be straight from the book problems!
Dr. Dobberpuhl is one of my favorite professors I have taken here at Creighton! I had him for a summer term so it was an accelerated course but he was so clear in the expectations and had such great lectures that I had no problem keeping up. If you get stuck, definitely go see him in office hours, he's always kind and willing to help!
Dobs has been my favorite prof at Creighton. He's funny, kind, and truly cares about his students. Gen chem can be pretty tough if you don't have a great high school chem background, but Dobs tries his best to help you through it. He's always willing to talk during office hours. The class is only based on 4 exam grades and a final.
Dobs genuinely cares about all of his students and takes the time to learn each persons name. Gen chem is going to be hard regardless of who you take it with, but Dobs does a great job at explaining the material. If you need extra help, he is always available and willing to help. He always makes class interesting and has a GREAT sense of humor!
Dobberpuhl is one of the best professors at Creighton. His class is easy to understand and as long as you put in the work you can definitely do well on his exams. He is also really funny and personable. Overall, amazing teacher.
To pass Dobberpuhl's class you really have to review all the chemistry things you learned previously because if you don't understand one portion of the material you're doomed for the rest of the material. If you do bad on like two of the exams, that messes up your whole grade. Much harder professors than the others. Don't take him unless smart...
Everyone giving him a 5 star and level 2 difficulty is LYING. They probably came from a private school and was rich enough to afford a chem tutor or something because this was the hardest class ever. I spent way too much time trying to teach myself the material because Dobs would just breeze through it. Get ready to cry and get depression with him.
Grade is based entirely on four exams. Lectures are awesome! Dobs is so funny/passionate, he somehow managed to make chem fun! Had cool demos, gave us breaks halfway through, and usually ended early. Very willing to help you, explains concepts slowly and clearly, and also gives you notes. Do practice problems and go to office hours if you need.
Dobs is the best chemistry professor I've ever had. I had a lackluster chemistry background in high school but managed to do well. I frequently visited him during office hours and he was consistently helpful. Class consisted of 4 unit exams and a final. Do the homework problems and ask for help, and you'll be fine.
Brutal professor that thinks he is way funnier than he actually is. Decent guy but the class was super tough, get ready for lots of extra effort.
Had Dobs for Quant Lab- knows a ton, can be confusing with explanations. Super approachable, always willing to help. Lab notebook grades are hard to get right without losing at least some points for formatting/sig figs/miscalcs, especially at the beginning of the semester. Experiments are graded on accuracy, but it isn't as scary as it sounds.
Dr. D. makes labs approachable perhaps because they are three hours on one topic. Yet when it comes to CHM 205, he races through the material, assigns lots of problems, and then expects you to understand everything completely on quizzes and exams. Very old-school, so don't bother unless you are willing to commit 2+ hours per day to homework.
Save yourself the time and headache. Old dude with dad jokes thinks he's funnier than he is; needs to find a Florida beach sooner rather than later. Almost decent in lab, brutal in lecture. Avoid at all costs, assuming you don't eat, sleep, and drink chemistry (and who would?!).
Dobbs is a tough but engaging prof. The class is work-heavy, but pay attention, do practice problems, and utilize resources like Unstuck AI - it really helps for prep. Tests are tricky but manageable with effort.
