knows his stuff
Perfect mix of humor and brilliance!
One of the best professors in North Carolina
UGH. He is the worst. Thinks he is God.
Interesting
LOVED HIM HE IS FABULOUS!!!!
made me consider being a history major (currently art major). if i could, would take another class with him.
He's ok...
Dr. Dorondo is the best teacher. Hard? YES. But such a great lecturer that little studying is required. HINT: Flashcards
Incredible professor! Loved every minute of his lectures; they were interesting and fun. Told little known facts about big history makers/events. Want to take him again! Every teacher should teach like him!
Tests were hard, due to the very high vocabulary.... not to mention the large amounts of reading.... (3 books required as supplimental)
Horrible only have 4 tests and those are the ONLY grades in that class
Hardest class i had ever taken here i had to drop it he is soo hard
too hard hes awful
He is one of the better profs. on the history staff. Overall Good experience. Sometimes his lectures can get a bit dry.
Wonderful teacher! Difficult, but very interesting!
Finest professor in the state of North Carolina and I've been around. Lectures are beautiful. You can't help but pay attention to this man.
Dr. Dorondo is an awesome teacher....he is a bit hard when it comes to his tests but I never studied and passed all 4 of them in both his classes. He speaks so eloquently hes hard not to pay attention to... and if he notices u not paying attention...he will be sure to let you know!
An incredible lecture based instructor and a fine human being. His classes are well structured and disciplined. With work his expectations are easily met. Not a man for those seeking a slackoff class, but if looking for a rewarding educational experience he is your man.
I had Dorondo 13 years ago and can still quote back information I use all the time that he taught me. He was wonderful, tough, structured, and worth every penny I paid for his class. If you want to learn, he is your man. Plus he digs Sting and that has to count for something.
Superior
a very nice, respectful man. he's a bit of a hard teacher, but you will learn so much from him. he's never boring, but a very eloquent speaker. i still remember everything i learned from this man, he is a wonderful teacher.
his tests are hard, but his class was my most favorite. i learned so so much, and i really looked forward to going to the class each day. he is the most interesting man at wcu

He is the best teach. ive had here so far!
Dr. Dorondo is a fantastic lecturer with good story-telling sense. I was an English major and his class kept me interested every single time. I have great respect for such a fantastic prof...even if he loves baseball.

Extremly hard, but extremly bright.. really knows his subject
Good professor, but utterly ruthless with grading. Prepare to do a lot of extra work. Interesting class, but he's really hard.
Awesome teacher. He is very interseting and entertaining. He is a little strict but not intimiating. I enjoy going to his class.
Amazing teacher! I took this class just for the hell of it and ended up liking it so much I want to take more history classes and I want to take a class with him again. Strange sense of humor, but if you can get it, he's funny as hell! Really, really intelligent man, and he'll never make you feel stupid for asking a question
He's hilarious. Every class is like an hour of story-time instead of a lecture.
I use to love history but then I took his class and no matter how hard i worked or what I did he made me feel stupid.
Excellent Teacher!!!! Dr. Dorondo took a time period that I have never enjoyed (19th Century) and made it absolutely stimulating and interesting. He also brings old world manners and charm to his teaching, which is most refreshing in a day and time when most students are calling their professors by their first names. Dr. Dorondo is professional.
I took this as an upper-level perspective over the summer and learned so much in such a short time. Take good notes and you will pass the tests, although dont expect an A. He gave me my first B ever, and I worked my @ss off for it, but that was the most satisfying grade I have ever received. To be a B in his eyes is an honor; he is brilliant.
A wonderful, fantastic teacher. I love how eloquently he speaks, and how politely he acts towards his students. He'll never make you feel stupid for asking a question. And to whoever made the comment about Hitler, yeah, he walks around with a baseball bat, but if you don't like it there's the door.
Awesome. A first rate mind at a 3d rate school.
Awesome! One of the smartest people I have ever met. Extremely courteous and very helpful. Everyone in my class loved Dr. Dorondo. Go see his office and look at all of the books that he owns.
The Greatest professor in the dept. Thats enough said.
Dr. Dorondo is extremely knowledgable in this subject. He has a weird sense of humor but never failed to make me laugh. Intimidating at first, but he is very nice and cares about what he is teaching. Hard class. If you take *good* notes and listen during lectures, you'll be fine. Only grades are tests. Study!
He is absolutely amazing. He comes to class and lectures with no notes- everything is from his memory. You will NOT meet a man more knowledgeable in his subject. Hates TV, and'll go off on rants about it. Know your vocabulary as he's a stickler for proper English. Take good notes, do the reading, and listen to him. Great professor.
Dr. Dorondo is the best teacher at western that i've encountered so far. his classes actually stimulate your mind and he gives his lectures from pure memory. He is very polite and courteous to his students also which seems rare and Dr. Dorondo is one of the most intelligent individuals i've met. Very much recommend his class(es).
The best professor on this campus that I have encountered by a long shot. Whoever says this class is hard is lazy; he expects of you what other professors should.
Definitely my favorite professor in four years at Western. Awesomely dry, old-fashioned sense of humor, very witty and also very knowledgeable. If you study you will get an A. And watch out for the mini baseball bat.
Good professor, strict but good.
Amazing teacher. Quite strict. Some non-history people might find him tough, but if you enjoy history you will love his lectures. They never get boring. Also has a dry sense of humor. I found him quite funny at times.
I found this class to be very tough, but I was very impressed with Dr. Dorondo. He's very knowledgeable and is happy to share what he knows. Take good notes in class, the exams almost exclusively from class discussions. He also gives pop quizzes, so make sure you attend. You'll have to work for a good grade, but it's rewarding if you do.
I loved him, he was pretty tough though. However, he is so knowledgeable and interested in what he's talking about it made me want to be there and listen. Only grades are essay tests which as long as you take notes in class and are willing to study a little extra harder for tests (since thers no homework) you should do great.
Dr. Dorondo captivates his audience and keeps it for the entire class period. I thoroughly enjoyed going to his class. I would gladly take and recommend him again and again! Bravo Dr. Dorondo.
Great Professor, Extremely Knowledgeable.
I have since transferred to another university, one that is much more academically focused than WCU. I don't think students at WCU realize what a great opportunity it is to be able to learn from Dr. D. A truly brilliant man, and a wonderful person. If you go to his office hours he will go out of his way to help you with anything. Highly recommended
one should take any course with dr. david dorondo. He is an extremely wierd dude who is an awesome instructor. He makes digressions constantly and makes you laugh all class. He has a sweet mustache and anyone who is a man should envy it. He is also extremely attractive, sexy even. One should learn a lot and not make fun of a sick man..
So professional. So excited about what he is teaching. So funny. He's like a drill sargent you just can't get enough of. Charming - as if he is from a different era. TAKE his classes. If you "get" him - you'll love it. Kudos Dr. Dorondo. Truly, a gentleman and a scholar.
One of the best Profs I've ever had, the 'stache is awesome as well
I loved his class. He is really interesting and likes to get off topic with horses. He has interesting facts and stories relating to lessons. Only hard thing is test are one question essay or one paragraph each to identify terms. HAVE FUN !
Wonderful professor. A gem.
Excellent professor and well versed in what he teaches.
Great teacher amazing guy even though his class is hard he is great at what he does one of best at wcu
Awesome teacher! Well versed and lots of fun. Just pay attention and read. Best History class ever. Highly recommend anyone to take any of his classes.
Great teacher. Very harsh grading though. If you love english and history, you'll do well. I'm more or less leaving because even though im learning a lot, i can not sacrifice my gpa for the class. Pluss there is another humanities that i just found that id rather take. Requires an unrealistic amount of reading but its not really necessary for exams
Excellent Professor, I've taken several of his courses. He provides rigorous courses as college classes should be. He doesn't give you anything, he makes you earn it. He forces you to learn which is a necessity in order to be successful in college and in life. I truly wish more professors were like him.
Dr. Dorondo is hilarious! I love him and his class. His tests are kind of difficult but as long as you pay attention and take notes it makes it 1000% times easier. Loved it.
He is a fantastic professor. His tests are hard. He expects the highest quality of work that you can produce. He is always willing to help any students that have questions with the material. You will be surprised at the vast about of knowledge that you will learn in just a semester. I would recommend him to any student.
Great lecturer. Hardest class I have ever taken. His expectations are not clear and he takes forever to get back any graded assignments. I refuse to take him again.
Dr. Dorondo is excellent at teaching. His class however, is almost impossible to pass. I made a C because I took every extra credit opportunity. I tried hard and studied yet still barely passed. His tests are on the spot essays. I enjoy him as a person and I learned a lot but the class was stressful.
Funny but hard
Great lecturer, unique sense of humor, made me laugh every day. A class I looked forward to. People speak as to how tough he is, but really he's just expecting you to be an actual student. Come in, pay attention, participate, think outside the box, and do the readings and you'll have no problem getting an A.
Dr. Dorondo is an awesome professor, and intelligence and knowledge simply exude from him. On top of being a great lecturer, he is hilarious. I will say that he is a very tough grader, and the only grades you will receive are from the exams. If you take his class, just make sure to do the readings, and take lots of notes.
He is by far my favorite professor. I would take him just to hear his voice.
Best orator I've had, have had four of classes for this reason. Tough grader, but fair. If you pay attention in class and take notes you'll do fine. Typically 3 exams and one long (10-12 page) paper due each class.
Dr. Dorondo is absolutely hilarious and I could listen to him talk all day. He makes complex material so easy to understand, he's wonderful! Attendance is mandatory and you'll definitely spend lots of time studying for the exams, but I have learned tons. He's a wonderful professor and I would highly recommend for anyone willing to put in the work.
Dr. Dorondo is fabulous!!!! His lectures are interesting and he is super funny. The class is hard but worth it for those who go to college to learn and not just play. I can't wait to take his upper level classes!!!!!! "TV will turn you into a moron!"
Dr. Dorondo is lecture-heavy and you have to attend class to pass. Writing notes and reading along in the textbook is essential because he only grades exams and he is a tough grader. But, he is an amazing lecturer and he's quite hilarious. Like... Ron Swanson but German
He is a great professor and his lectures are amazing but only gives out 3 exams and if you dont write down everything he says YOU WILL FAIL. He only took 3 grades and he is a very tough grader. On his exams I had the correct content but he graded me on my grammer and ended up giving me a D- for the assignment even though my content was right.
Dr. Dorondo is a great professor!! In this class, you will learn everything pertaining to your course and more. TAKE NOTE OF EVERYTHING HE SAYS (except maybe his off topic digressions). Then, when his exams are coming up and he gives you a study guide, make sure you know everything on there. There are only 4 grades/exams, so study, and use WALC.
Its hard to describe Dr. Dorondo. He's how I imagine all teachers used to be. He's very old-school and stresses being "polite, not kind." However, he's a nice guy and cares for all of his students. Just don't mess around. He's also pretty funny. He's like Ron Swanson if you know who that is. Side-note, this was a USI class but we didn't about WCU.
Dr. Dorondo was honestly one of best teachers I have ever met, he is a very nice and pleasant guy, helpful and straight-forward, guy, he gives you the truth and helps you seek the Truth and not the truth, there is a difference ask him about, I would like all professors to be like Dorondo, he is a role model and very great teacher.
He is by far the best history teacher Ive ever had.
Dr. Dorondo is a very witty and old school. Every class is a lecture, and he doesn't assign homework. If you take this class prepare to take notes. There are 3 tests in the semester and those are the only grades you get. If you can't write an extremely detailed essay on topics covered in class or do well on tests you wont pass.
Great professor, even if you don't enjoy a history class he is still humorous, and always uniform. His quick remarks can last with you all day or be the bright spot in your day. If you love history then your in for a treat, He is very professional yet seems approachable. A respected professor of true class, lastly don't misspell cavalry
Dr. Dorando is an amazing professor. Old-school and very lecture heavy. To pass this class you will have to attend class, take notes, read the textbook, and study. Dorondo is reliable. Tests are essay questions, but if you know the material, you'll pass. Want to learn European history? This is the class that is guaranteed to teach you.
A simple course where you have 3 tests throughout the semester and that is your final grade. You must take detailed notes in order to pass. A good person for telling entertaining stories but not someone you want as your professor. He is strangely picky about vocabulary and grammar and also doesn't respond to emails.
Dr. Dorondo is one of my favorite professors at WCU. He's very old fashioned and lectures heavy, but he makes sure his lectures are entertaining and enjoyable. He's also great about answering questions in class, but not so much by email. Overall, he's a very enjoyable professor and I will be taking one of his classes again this upcoming semester.
good professor
Dr. Dorondo is by far my favorite professor I've had. He expects high-quality work, so this is NOT an easy class, but his lectures are amazing. He is passionate about what he teaches, and he makes class times fly by so quickly. He is incredibly knowledgeable and really fun to learn from. Good note-taking in ALL lectures is absolutely vital.
Prof. Dorondo is such a sweetheart, however, DO NOT TAKE his class if you cannot write good essays on topics that you only get during test time in an hour. He also doesn't assign any supplemental work other than reading books that you have to buy. NOT TO MENTION!!! It's pretty obvious that he wrote at least half of the reviews on this page lol...
For me, this is an instance where you love the professor as a person but not as a professor. Dr. Dorondos class is all lecture and if you dont write down every single thing that he says, you wont pass. He also assigns two books that youre required to buy and read. The exams will be very hard if you dont fully understand and apply all materials
He is a very nice man, but his lectures are extremely heavy and you have to make sure to get everything written down for tests. His tests are essay formats and you have an hour to complete them with the proper paper format he requested. There was only grades for tests so if you don't do good on tests you're screwed. Very reading heavy.
His lectures are boring and he will put you to sleep. He gives you very few assignments which are an automatic easy 100 because there is no right or wrong answer.
His lectures are boring and you have to take a ton of notes if you want to pass. His exams are only 1 question and it's an essay so be prepared for that. This is not an easy class but he is a nice person and a very intelligent man. He grades these exams very hard and there are only 3 exams and a map quiz the whole semester so don't do bad.
Dr. Dorondo is very sweet and he keeps his class interesting. He is enthusiastic about what he teaches, but his class is very lecture heavy and note-taking is key. He only takes 4 grades a semester-4 essays that must be done in class time. Do not take this class if writing is not your strong suit. He is always willing to answer questions though.
I absolutely love Dr. Dorondo. He is respectful, extremely educated in his field, and makes classes interesting. His grades are tests which are in the form of essays. HOWEVER, he gives you multiple questions to choose from and a study guide of words to know. A lot of his info is spoken so go to class. He does not take off for grammar or spelling.
Dr. Dorondo was a true delight. Attend his lectures because they are important, but also because he was really funny. Taught us about current events as well as historical ones. Read supplemental texts and enjoyed them. Exams are stressful but not bad if you take half-decent notes. Go in prepared to listen to lectures and to appreciate them.
Dr. Dorondo has a lot of relevant knowledge to share so classes are pretty solidly lecture. He's funny and genuinely cares about the information he's giving you. You do need to do the reading if you really want to understand the material you're being tested on (and if you want a good grade). 4 essay exams and a map quiz on Europe. Take good notes!
I think Dorondo is a very good professor. He’s on the tougher side, but if you listen in class you should be fine. He has a good sense of humor and is extremely intelligent.
Be ready for long lectures, I recommend you take pictures of his PowerPoint slides as he is lecturing, you can't really take notes because he speaks too fast. Dr. Dorondo will also sometimes go off on tangents, in response to student questions. He also does pick favorites, the best way to become one is to ask intelligible questions.
Dr. Dorondo is a very sweet man and his classes are enjoyable. He can go on tangents but they usually help in one way or another. He doesn't use canvas so if you miss class you won't get the notes. This class is difficult as his only assignments are 4 essay exams with one hour to complete. He does allow extra credit but it's also essays.
Dorondo is a great guy don't get me wrong, but if you are someone who learns with slides, and not someone just talking this class is not for you. May I add as well that you have 3 tests, and SOME extra credit- and that's it. .... Just beware. This is a "learn outside the classroom" class
I really thought he was going to be awful. He does not use Canvas and has an "old school" lecture-only approach. There are really only 3 grades, which are exams. I really appreciated him as a professor. His lectures were not completely boring, but you can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches. He is extremely intelligent and a good guy.
Dr. Dorondo class is an experience. Lectures are very interesting. 3 Blue book essay tests, a map quiz and a paper. The max grade is most A students end up with is an A- the way he grades. There is lots of reading and maps are important, but he is currently one of the best teachers in the department.
Doesn't use canvas, so if you miss class you can't get the notes. Has 3 essay exams that make up your entire grade, and is peculiar about spelling and grammar. Great speaker, I would love to hear him lecture without the stress of writing down absolutely everything. Gives study guides, they're pretty useless. Nice professor but really tough class.
Dr. Dorondo is an incredible person, but his class is just lectures. You are responsible for taking your own notes, reading the textbook outside of class, and to keep a good understanding of topics gone over in class. The only grades you'll receive are three exams: pre-midterm, midterm, and a cumulative final. No quizzes, homework, or other tests.
Dr. Dorondo is a very challenging professor and you are required throughout the semester to read a textbook. He will assign the whole thing throughout the semester! Only 3 exams make up your entire grade. Be ready to study and put in alot of work for this class. I liked his personality. Doesnt use Canvas, so check emails! Very old-school approach.
Dr. Dorondo is a great lecturer and clearly cares and is very knowledgeable about his topics. However, the class is graded on three timed essay exams and no more. He also does not use canvas. I would not recommend this class to non-history or english majors, as you will likely struggle. I enjoyed the class and would take him again as a professor.
Dr Dorondo always has very funny things to say. As long as you show up for class and read the textbook you will be fine for this class. There are 3 tests and they are all written in blue books. He also offers extra credit opportunities. He is a generous man and is willing to answer any question thrown at him. I will definitely keep in touch!
Dr. Dorondo gives a very engaging lecture and is extremely knowledgeable. The coursework for 222 is just 3 blue book essays, so avoid if that's not your strong suit. He also does not use Canvas and is only accessible irl and over email, but he's happy to talk and still very engaging outside of class. 100% would take again.
One of my favorite quotes from this man was "Now I'm not a psychiatrist..... but" regarding the president of Russia. Instead of taking notes I just took quotes from him. This man speaks gold. Once someone asked him if he had a beard on behind his mask and he said "that's a personal question" and sent the guy out. Amazing.
Dr. Dorondo sets his students up for failure due to the fact that he only gives out three grades the entire semester and only uses one way of teaching; lectures with a power-point behind him. I struggled the entire time I was in this class and towards the end of the semester I had given up and accepted my fate. Would not recommend.
Dr. Dorondo's lectures are engaging, but the class requires a lot of independent work. 3 blue book essays make up the entire grade, so be prepared to study hard. Unstuck AI can help with essay prep. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
Great professor, I just didn't enjoy how his class was set up. There were basically 3 grades total and he was a harsh grader for a new freshman. However, with tutoring it's easy to get through his class and he is a funny guy! Love Dr. Dorondo as a person and I do not regret taking a class of his.
